Houston's First Soccer-Specific Stadium Gets Amped Up with L-Acoustics

Quick summary:

  • Ninety-six A15i speakers, and16 KS21i subwoofers were installed at Houston's 20,656-seat Shell Energy Stadium, replacing an outdated 2012 vocal-only PA with a high-energy, music-friendly setup.
  • Engineers solved complex coverage gaps around the stadium's north video screen without structural modifications..
  • The new system tightly directs clear, impactful audio into the stands while keeping noise off the field for game officials and out of the surrounding downtown neighborhood, earning immediate praise from fans.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup brought re-found soccer fandom to Houston, which served as one of the major host cities. Since 2012; however, the city's soccer culture extends far beyond international tournaments, operating weekly at Shell Energy Stadium. To enhance the game-day experience, LD Systems, a Clair Global brand, recently installed L-Acoustics A Series loudspeaker system.

The 20,656-seat venue, which is the first downtown soccer-specific stadium in Major League Soccer, hosts four distinct teams: Houston Dynamo FC, the National Women’s Soccer League's Houston Dash, Texas Southern University Tigers football, and the Houston Gamblers of the United Football League. Since majority owner Ted Segal committed over $30 million to venue overhauls starting in 2021, upgrading the stadium’s original 2012 audio system became a top priority. The club sought higher energy, superior intelligibility, and impact for fans without increasing off-site noise pollution in the surrounding East Downtown neighborhood or interfering with players and officials on the pitch.

Sustainability and physical constraints were central to the redesign. The venue actively works toward LEED-certified decarbonization goals, requiring any new system to limit electrical draw. LD Systems achieved this by utilizing existing cabling infrastructure and keeping structural modifications to a minimum, powered efficiently by just twelve L-Acoustics amplified controllers.

The physical layout of the stadium presented unique acoustical challenges. While the east and west bowls feature large overhangs for easy speaker suspension, the north and south ends lack overhead structures. The north end is further complicated by a massive video display measuring 34x73 feet, leaving limited mounting space near a noisy, angled supporters' section. Using L-Acoustics Soundvision modeling software, engineers mounted enclosures directly onto the scoreboard structure and directed additional corner arrays back toward the end zone, closing coverage gaps seamlessly.

In total, the installation features 96 A15i enclosures (84 Wide and 12 Focus models) paired with 16 flown KS21i subwoofers for full-range musical fidelity. Powered by 10 LA12X and two LA4X amplified controllers, the system delivers precise vertical directionality, keeping high-SPL audio focused on the stands while avoiding the playing field.

The new deployment replaced the old vocal-reinforcement setup with a dynamic, music-friendly sound system ideal for matchday DJs and live production. The immediate improvement in clarity and low-end impact transformed the overall game-day atmosphere, earning instant acclaim from stadium attendees and technical operators alike.

“We heard a ton of unsolicited comments about how much better the sound is from people that had no idea that there even was a new sound system in there," Matt Rhodes, sales engineer at LD Systems, shared. "Fans, who are not technical people, said to us, ‘Wow, it sounds so much better this season.’ To get that kind of feedback was really cool.”

By pairing advanced L-Acoustics technology with smart engineering choices, LD Systems provided Shell Energy Stadium with a high-impact, energy-efficient audio solution. The upgrade ensures the venue remains a premiere destination for live sports and entertainment while honoring its environmental commitments and downtown neighbors.
