Tomorrow’s Webinar on “The Digital Signage CMS” should be interesting. Whether you’re a systems integrator, design consultant, or digital signage end-user, the question of what digital signage content management software you should choose for a particular job can be confusing. We’ve addressed this issue many times in the past– including the difference between the two main digital signage content management software camps: those who provide a customer-installed solution that runs mainly on “premise-based” servers, or those that provide a “hosted” software as a service (SaaS) that the end user does not “buy” but accesses remotely through a web browser.

But our NEC-Sponsored Webinar tomorrow, Wednesday (register: http://www.media.qualitytech.com/client/new_bay/2010_0922_DS/238076/launch.htm ) is not an academic look at the topic, or a SaaS vs. Premised-based analysis. Rather, it will feature two players who bring a hands-on view of challenges and solutions: Dave Haynes of the Preset Group, and Mike Zmuda of NEC. In fact, the Webinar tomorrow will look at some of the hardware issues surrounding “Software” as well– including technologies such as SMIL and SVG, and a now fast-changing environment where, according to Dave Haynes, “Media Centers and IP-TV capabilities are being built into little boxes (like Apple’s) and right into TVs (Sony and Google TV) and running apps and widgets and gadgets that could easily turn TVs and commercial monitors into what look like pretty typical digital signage network displays.” Dave also asks “Can you use Flash or not in digital signage apps without licensing? Big gray area and has been for years…”

We need to look closely at these new developments, and remember that many new “solutions” will not stand the test of time. As usually happens in the AV world, the providers, like NEC, that have proven themselves in the channel will prevail. Mike Zmuda of NEC will give NEC’s answer to the challenges in the Webinar tomorrow.

Join Digital Signage Magazine and NEC Wednesday, September 22nd at 2:00 PM EDT (Eastern time) for this FREE webinar, which will examine the steadily evolving digital signage content management software world.
