RMG Acquires Symon

Ad-based network operators such as RMG Networks– heavy, to this point, in the transportation sector especially– see the digital signage industry as a true DOOH play, not vice versa. In other words, they are interested in the creation of digital place-based networks, not in the proliferation of screens per se. They see the growth of the market in (ad-based) Networks with known audiences and metrics, not random screens or digital signage systems running internal (non ad-based) content. RMG's Air Media network reaches about thirty-five million travelers monthly, while its mail media network has sixty million viewers (those two networks together comprise RMG Media Networks)

Digital Signage Content Management Software providers on the other hand, love screens of any kind– the more the merrier. They’re in the business of helping clients put content onto screens– for any purpose. Symon was in that latter camp mainly– until last Friday, when RMG acquired Symon.

RMG Enterprise Solutions is the new name for Symon, and it will be led by Charles Ansley, who was Symon CEO. And RMG has announced that it will move its corporate headquarters to the Dallas area. So this will be a very important acquisition to watch. As I’ve preached from my pulpit for years– the digital signage market will always put retail digital signage, and DOOH and Place-Based Networks, at the top of the totem pole. This is indeed a new media, and the fastest-growing new media. But there is also so much market growth for digital signage that is not tied to ad-funded networks that you’d ignore that AV and IT side upside at your peril.

It will be interesting to have a major new player, straddling both sides of the fence, operating out of Texas.

RMG Networks Completes Acquisition of Symon Communications

With this step, RMG Networks expands its digital signage media offering to include complete end-to-end solutions providing hardware, software, professional services and monetization management for both advertising and non-advertising digital signage customers.

This transaction follows the recently completed business combination of Reach Media Group Holdings, Inc. and SCG Financial Acquisition Corp.

The combination of RMG Networks and Symon creates a leading digital signage media company that offers intelligent visual technology solutions to enterprise customers and leadership in digital place-based media to advertisers. RMG Networks now has over 7,500 customers, including approximately 70% of the Fortune 100, a majority of the Fortune 500, and over 1 million installed screens.

The digital signage market is expected to experience strong near-term growth. PQ Media projects media revenue for the U.S. digital-out-of-home market to increase at a compound rate of 12.5% through 2016. Intel's Embedded and Communications Group has published that it expects the number of digital signage media players installed worldwide to increase from 3 million today to approximately 10 million by 2015.

Following the closing of the acquisition, RMG Networks will relocate its global headquarters to the Dallas metro area. Key members of the Symon management team will remain with RMG Networks, including Symon's Chief Financial Officer William Cole, who is expected to be named the CFO of RMG Networks and former Symon Chief Executive Officer Charles Ansley, who is expected to be named President of RMG Enterprise Solutions.
