Matrox Video Announcement Is a Paradigm Shift for Pro AV Industry

Ron Berty, business development manager at Matrox Video, unveils a massive announcement of its new Maevex MGX lineup of encoders and decoders, which they believe creates a paradigm shift in AV over IP compression, alleviating major network and IT administration pressure.

AV Technology: Declaring a paradigm shift is a pretty bold statement. How do you back that up?

AVT: You’re building on Maevex. How so?

AVT: What are some of the biggest pain points the new Maevex MGX is addressing?

AVT: What were some of the trade-offs needed to achieve high quality?

AVT: You say that the eye cannot detect latency at this level. What about in mission-critical control rooms? Convince me!

AVT: This is a bandwidth story, and that translates into one of the biggest pain points for IT departments: Distributing signals on the network.

AVT: Let’s discuss applications and how each of the new products fits into those. Let’s address the control room first. How do the new KVM capabilities and near-zero latency performance fundamentally change how operators can work, particularly regarding the centralization of PCs in a rack room and sharing control with remote or overflow rooms?

AVT: Matrox hasn’t traditionally been in the unified communications and collaboration spaces. How will you address these spaces? There are a lot of pain points here. Color accuracy and near-zero latency are critical for the content being shared.

AVT: What about the user interface? Easy to use is critical in these spaces.

AVT: Flexibility and scalability are important. Interoperability is essential when buying new technologies. Please explain how MGX supports standard protocols like IPMX, RTSP, MPEG-TS, and SRT.

AVT: What role does Matrox IQ mode play?

AVT: This is a hardware and ultimately a software play. There are things coming down the road that we can’t foresee. How do these new products address that?

AVT: Let’s talk about competitive products and price. What is the primary competitive edge of Maevex MGX, and how does the pricing, especially for your dual-channel encoder and decoder solutions, position Matrox in the market?
