Why Sony's New BRAVIA Pro BZ-P Series Displays are the Intelligent Choice for Higher Education
For AV/IT managers at colleges and universities, deciding on which display technology to choose impacts more than what's on the screen. Learn about the new BZ-P Series.
For AV/IT managers at colleges and universities, deciding on which display technology to choose impacts more than just what's on the screen. The decision affects budget, sustainability goals, deployment timelines, the overall student and faculty experience, and can influence enrollment.
We recently sat down with Joe Drury, business manager of BRAVIA Professional Displays at Sony Electronics, to learn about the new BZ-P Series.
"Colleges and universities are empowering students to understand how to interact with their environment, much as they would in huddle spaces and meeting rooms in the business environment they'll graduate into," Drury said. Displays belong in just about every space, not only in classrooms and lecture halls, but also in hallways, dining facilities, libraries, and for wayfinding. "Today, the ability to change messaging is critical, and networked digital signage is the best way to update that content dynamically," he added.
With the pressure on student enrollment at every college and university, Drury pointed out, "Don't forget about capturing the attention of parents and students during recruitment tours. Seeing beautiful, bright displays in classrooms and throughout the campus leaves a lasting impression." You want to ensure the correct college colors are emblazoned on the displays in the lobby and every space during the tour.
Engineered for Demanding Higher Ed Environments
The BZ-P series is a pro-agnostic lineup. "The operating system is unique, its user interface is unique, the chassis is unique," Drury said.
Sony recently announced sixteen completely redesigned models of its BRAVIA Professional Displays in the BZ-P Series, comprising the BZ40P Flagship models, BZ35P Enhanced options, and BZ30P Core offerings. Ranging in size from 43 inches to 85 inches and featuring a Deep Black Non-Glare technology, the 4K HDR portfolio is suited for a range of uses in corporate, higher education, retail, and transportation spaces.
The Sony BRAVIA BZ-P Series is engineered to meet the robust and demanding requirements of higher education environments, making it a perfect choice for classrooms, lecture halls, huddle spaces, and campus-wide digital signage.
The core of this lies in a superior Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and unmatched reliability. "The true cost of a display is not its initial price but its lifetime expense," Drury said. "Sony's focus on reliability directly translates to a lower TCO over a five-year lifespan." An advanced replacement warranty underscores this. "Sony replaces units instead of repairing them, drastically minimizing downtime, which is critical on 24/7 campuses," Drury added. "While the warranty is important, at the end of the day, what they really want is reliability." This reliability means fewer service calls and less time spent coordinating technicians. Quality assurance is built in, as every Pro BRAVIA display undergoes a rigorous 30-second-per-unit test at the factory to validate a multitude of picture-quality variables, ensuring a high confidence level before shipping.
Beyond reliability, the BZ-P Series excels in significant sustainability and energy savings, helping institutions meet their environmental and cost-reduction goals. The displays achieve an industry-leading power consumption reduction of up to 31% compared to the previous BZ-L Series, resulting in substantial energy cost savings. Sony also enhances its use of SORPLAS (Sustainable Oriented Recycled Plastic), a proprietary recycled plastic technology, ensuring that all components are responsibly and ethically sourced. These displays are certified by Energy Star, EPEAT (Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool), and CECP (China Energy Conservation Program), validating their energy efficiency claims.
Enhanced Performance, Easy Setup, and Deployment
"The new BZ-P Series displays incorporate our next-gen XR processor, the most robust chip in the Pro BRAVIA lineup, which uses an AI engine to optimize color and contrast for superior picture quality," Drury said. "The BZ-P Series displays are perfect in classrooms or any environment with bright lighting," he added. All series now feature a Deep Black Non-Glare solution to combat reflections in bright spaces, with the BZ40P Series maintaining a 47% anti-glare treatment with low reflection capabilities and the BZ35P and BZ30P Series introducing a new 25% anti-glare standard.
Efficiency is also key to enhanced performance and installation. The depth of 43-inch through 65-inch models in the BZ-P Series has been reduced from 2.8 inches to just 1.8 inches by moving to an edge-lit design. "This slimmer profile is a significant factor in meeting ADA compliance and other physical restrictions in various campus locations," Drury added. The BZ30P, BZ35P, and BZ40P models share the same unified chassis design, allowing AV/IT managers to mix and match display series based on specific room requirements and budget constraints while maintaining a clean, consistent look across campus. Installation is made easier with a centered VESA pattern, and the addition of in-chassis handles on the larger 75- and 85-inch models. For more challenging locations, the BZ40P and BZ35P series also include an IP5X anti-dust rating for robustness.
"The user interface has been completely redesigned, accelerating the provisioning process, cutting the initial setup time from 19 clicks to just 5 clicks," Drury explained. "You can imagine the impact of that on our provisioning tools, whether it is DPT (Device Provisioning Tool), our free provisioning tool, or the provisioning tool in the Device Management Platform, which is an at-cost service."
The Bigger Picture
AV/IT managers are being challenged to look at the total cost of ownership. "We are growing significantly in higher ed," said Drury. "We're seeing a lot of growth because customers are now being challenged to understand what the total cost of ownership is. For the longest time, it was, 'this is the cheapest option.' And then they started realizing year three, four, and five, this option's not cheap anymore, and it's actually costing me a lot of time and a lot of money. So, we're seeing a lot of adoption on Pro BRAVIA as a result of this. These BZ-P Series were specifically engineered to address these customers, and they've been very clear on what their requirements are, and I believe that these units address those."
By choosing the Sony BRAVIA Pro Displays for Corporate, Education & Retail - Sony Pro, AV/IT managers are investing in a pro-agnostic, reliable, and sustainable display lineup that is purpose-built to meet the exacting standards and long-term needs of modern higher education.
