Throughout the history of professional video production, transformative technologies have democratized their use and disrupted the status quo of expensive, proprietary solutions. Twenty years ago, the TriCaster was such a product, and it remains that way today under the ownership of Vizrt.

Introduced by NewTek at the NAB 2005 convention, the TriCaster—so named for its ability to input and output live and pre-recorded video, record it, and stream it over the internet—was initially a kludgey-looking silver box loaded with software that was working so hard it began to overheat after the first day of demonstrations and had to be restarted every hour or so for the remainder of the show.

However, its value was significant and clear to everyone who saw it, as the year ushered in a rapid increase in the evolution of technologies that needed content to make them useful, such as broadband, social media, and the internet on mobile phones.

To meet this growing revolution in desktop video, the initial TriCaster model integrated live video switching, broadcast graphics, virtual sets, and other production features into a portable and compact device. It was essentially a "TV studio in a computer," as some marketing materials at the time claimed.

From its humble beginnings as production switcher for SD video that used a keyboard and mouse instead of a traditional switcher panel, today's version of the same integrated production system is more advanced, less expensive than the sum of its features, and just as capable of handling high-quality content as any other solution. In fact, it's used to produce some of the most high-profile online content, such as part of FOX Sports’ coverage of this year’s NFL Super Bowl telecast.

Indeed, the nascent TriCaster has come a long way.

“It's amazing how the TriCaster has gone from people looking down their nose at it as not suitable for professional production to doing part of the Super Bowl this year,” said Chris McLendon, senior product manager for Vizrt’s TriCaster, 3Play, and Viz Connect products. “Even top-end broadcasters are having to stretch their budgets and get the most bang out of their buck. One of the ways to do that is to multitask products and have a single system do a lot of different things. That’s the concept that TriCaster was founded on.”

An Amiga Disruptor

TriCaster was originally developed by NewTek, a company founded in 1985 in Topeka, KS, by Tim Jenison and Paul Montgomery. The company eventually moved San Antonio, TX, in 1997, and was sold to Vizrt in 2019. NewTek’s history started with video capture hardware and editing software for the Commodore Amiga platform.

“I joined Vizrt in 2022, and from what I’ve been told, there was a lot of rebel outlaw mentality in the beginning of NewTek,” said McLendon. “They had a small group of really smart people, and they got together and went to trade shows, and they looked at how people were doing things and literally said, ‘Let's shake it up and do something completely different.’”

“NewTek was a major force in ushering in the historic digital television transition,” said Brian McKernan, former editor of Videography magazine, which covered the fledgling company extensively. “Innovative products such as the popular TriCaster were a natural extension of that.”

One of those innovative products was the famous Video Toaster.

“NewTek’s founders were personal computer enthusiasts as teenagers who built their company based on that perspective,” McKernan explained. “They instinctively recognized the value of what the 'off-the-shelf' and very affordable Commodore Amiga personal computer offered to the television production industry because of its special display system. Combining the Amiga’s unique 'Blitter' and 'Copper' chips, NewTek developed the broadcast-quality Video Toaster, which provided video producers at all levels with a video switcher, DVE, character generator, paint, and the Lightwave 3-D animation system. It was an immediate hit with everyone from Wayne’s World to Disney Studios.”

Continuous Upgrade Path

TriCaster systems utilize a customized version of Windows as their operating system, specifically a Long-Term Servicing Branch (LTSB) or Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) variant. This means they are not standard Windows operating systems and focus primarily on security and stability. It's a specialized version designed for TriCaster’s specific hardware and live video production.

Over the ensuing years, the TriCaster was incrementally improved with new features and better signal support for professional workflows. At NAB 2006, NewTek announced TriCaster PRO, which introduced professional video, audio connections, and virtual sets (using proprietary NewTek LiveSet technology) to the TriCaster line. Next came TriCaster STUDIO, the first TriCaster to support six cameras, and then TriCaster BROADCAST, the first model to deliver SDI video and audio support.

In early 2009, NewTek introduced 3PLAY, a portable multi-channel HD/SD slow-motion replay system. TriCaster TCXD300, the first HD TriCaster, came in 2009, and in 2010, NewTek introduced TriCaster TCXD850, a 22-channel HD model in a rackmount form factor.

At the IBC 2025 show in Amsterdam, NewTek introduced its IP networking protocol, Network Device Interface (NDI). The predecessor to NDI was called AirSend, which was primarily used as an IP video tool for TriCaster users. The system included the world’s first natively integrated NDI video switcher.

Among the many influential features added to the TriCaster is Live Call Connect, which allows users to integrate remote callers from videoconferencing applications like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Discord, and Slack into productions. This feature, introduced as part of the TriCaster 2 Elite systems, proved to be highly beneficial when remote working became the norm during the pandemic. “Vizrt/NewTek was one of the first people to say, 'If you've got a Skype caller, you should be able to pull that directly into a broadcast,'” said McLendon.

That system was one of its best-selling TriCaster products ever. It has since been replaced with the new TriCaster Vizion system, which offers advanced graphics, AI-powered tools, and configurable SDI/IP I/O. The AI tools are built on the Nvidia framework, particularly those leveraging GPUs. “They were ahead of the curve in terms of remote collaboration, and it’s another example of the company being innovative,” McLendon said. “Vizrt has an entire roadmap for adding AI-powered tools in the future. This includes some gaze correction that can automatically trim shots where the talent has moved out of frame.”

Software Legacy

Looking at its underlying architecture, the TriCaster was, in effect, an appliance built on a Windows platform for the first 15 years or so. However, over the past few years, the company has focused on more software-only features. To that end, Vizrt now offers TriCaster Mini S, a software-only solution that customers can use with their own hardware. Another option is TriCaster Vectar, a cloud-based 4K production system.

“That's one of the reasons why we can do some of the things that we can do that others can't—because it was always built on software," McLendon explained. "The hardware was just a vehicle to get to where customers want to go. The challenge was that the hardware was not good. Well, now we've gotten to a point in time where the hardware, even consumer hardware, is amazing in the things it can do. So, as hardware processing gets better and faster, it will only improve TriCaster’s performance."

Today, the Vizrt TriCaster product line includes models for practically any application, from on-premise production to cloud and software-based solutions. So, where does the TriCaster stand in the pantheon of paradigm-shifting technologies for video production? McLendon argues it revolutionized the idea of doing full productions in one integrated system.

"I think the fact that you now see so many multitasking products is a testament to the founders seeing an opportunity to make video production easy and affordable," he offered. "That's the legacy, because the TriCaster concept was so simple. It is one system that has multiple capabilities, enabling customers to avoid having to buy and learn five different systems. What was once a disruptor is now the most cost-effective and efficient way to produce and distribute professional audio and video content.”

The hub’s Multiview function provides selection among various modes, and the user can define those settings, such as the ability to see all four input sources prior to making a selection. To ensure intuitive operation, the hub provides KVM switching among two computers at 10 Gbps. KVM auto-switching is based on TMDS/5V detection and KVM supports hot-key control at the USB2.0 port. The ALF-MU4K Hub provides 4 USB ports with the ability to handle up to USB 3.2 and there is also a single USB 2.0 KVM port.

Additional connectivity on the ALF-MU4K Hub includes USB C as well as HDMI inputs with Host USB ports for Unified Connectivity. It should also be noted that Ethernet is enabled for all USB C and B Host ports.

Additional functions of the new ALF-MU4K Hub include versatile control via the TCP/IP (GUI), RS232, or GPIO with a 3rd party control system. The hub supports auto switching for the inputs and EDID (Extended Display Identification Data). HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) management is handled via DIP switches. TCP/IP is to allow the firmware upgrade to be done over the network and to be discoverable via a third-party management system.

We've had the Roland V-60HD as our university’s TV studio video switcher for many years, so I was excited to try the new V-80HD direct streaming video switcher, which Roland announced in June. With a slightly larger footprint (almost 16 inches wide, 10 inches deep, and about 4 inches high), this compact switcher does everything we have come to expect from Roland and much more.

Your Pick of Sources

A switcher is only as good as its I/O. The eight video inputs on the V-80HD offer a mix of HDMI, 3G-SDI, and SRT—so you can use studio cameras, ENGs, even PTZs—while its outputs add USB 3.0 and LAN to the mix. It also supports up to 28 channels of audio and has built-in streaming (SRT, RTMP, and RTMPS protocols). If you're crunched for time, audio and video actions can be pre-programed. And with Mac or Windows based systems, the software allows remote operation.

[Product Review: Keep on Tracking]

The V-80HD supports a wide variety of formats and frame rates, including 4K60. If you’re mixing HD with 4K sources, two of the HDMI inputs will downscale to HD, and frame rate converters within the SDI inputs will simplify your productions by having your sources match.

Output sources are plentiful—HDMI, LAN, SDI, and USB-C. The USB output can send video and sound to a phone, computer, or UVC platform. Use the LAN output for RTMP. If your production requires effects, you can utilize the downstream keyer (DSK), as well as two picture-in-picture windows and split screen. Got a Windows-based system? Graphics and titles can be generated using free templates with the companion Graphics Presenter software and shared with the switcher via an HDMI cable.

The top of the Roland V-80HD features four audio input level pots, two auxes, and a main with peak and left and right level LEDs. Directly below are eight assignable pads, downstream keyer (DSK) with level, gain, source, preview, and program. And below that are picture-in-picture and key control, with both keys offering horizontal and vertical positioning knobs, plus source, preview, and program. The next bank is selectable between Aux 1, Aux 2, memory, and macro. The Program Bank offers eight inputs and preview bank with A-center and B-center adjustments for the spilt screen.

On the top of the right side of the switcher is the integrated 4.3-inch LCD monitor with buttons to let you choose multiview, two input views, and program. You'll also find controls for menu adjustments, output fade, and more. You can select between mix and wipe for the fader bar, plus there are cut and auto transition buttons. Below the front panel is where you'll find the headphone input and volume, plus USB host input and an SDXC card input for storing information.

[Integrated Production Switchers: Doing More with Less]

The back of the V-80HD houses the 24-volt DC input, power button, left and right XLR audio outputs, left and right RCA for a third and fourth channel, USB-C (computer or cell phone) and LAN (direct) streaming outputs, three HDMI outputs, four HDMI input scalers (two are 4K scalers with thru ports). Rounding out the ports are RS-232 and tally/GPIO outputs, two CTL/EXP ports, four SDI inputs, and two SDI outputs.

Ready for Action

The Roland V-80HD is so user friendly even the most non-technical person can easily hook it up and have it running in little time. Having an older version of a Roland switcher made our hookup even easier. We have three Hitachi 1080p cameras connected via SDI and a UHD 4K PTZ camera attached via a downscaling HDMI.

Each of our four usable inputs are attached to a 20-inch LED monitor, and the preview and program have their own 55-inch LED monitors. The V-80HD can display all monitor information on one screen, but I chose to keep it the way our control room had operated in the past.

The V-80HD does far more than our V-60HD ever did. After attaching all the SDI and HDMI cables, I powered up the system. The pretty light show lasted a few moments before it settled into its ready mode.

One of our senior TV/Film majors instinctively set up a preset where several of the live camera images animated to their positions. I asked him how he knew how to set up this mildly complicated maneuver. He replied, “My summer job was live streaming using a switcher.” It wasn’t a Roland, but with almost no trial an error, he had it set up.

After seeing his ease with the Roland V-80HD and feeling as if I should have taken a refresher course in Switchers 101, I took the reins and set up a DSK. I must admit it felt great showing my student how to do something he had no clue how to do.

As I had mentioned, switchers have come a long way in their ease of setup and operation. The Roland V-80HD moves to the head of the class; it is just extremely easy to learn and operate. The V-80HD also does so much that it opens the door for more creativity in a studio environment. I really liked the built-in monitor. Having the program image—or all your sources—right in front of you on the switcher is easier than looking all the multitude of monitors throughout the studio.

Initially, I thought a bigger switcher wouldn’t be any improvement. I was wrong. The Roland V-80HD is a powerful yet reasonably priced switcher for a TV studio. It has plenty of features and inputs without the steep learning curve of other, more expensive choices. The best quote from a student: “You can teach a course on how this switcher will make live productions less complicated and how this switcher will make our TV shows more exciting.”

Extron has released its flagship model in the DTP3 CrossPoint Series, the DTP3 CrossPoint 884. The DTP3 configurable-size presentation matrix switcher has four reversible DTP3 ports to enable matrix configurations from 8x12 to 12x8. Atlona released a new version of the AT-OME-MS42, part of the Omega Series matrix switchers that helps customers simplify the connectivity infrastructure inside learning and meeting spaces. The new AT-OME-MS42-HDBT 4x2 matrix switcher introduces an HDBaseT input alongside local USB-C and two HDMI connections, building in a remote input option that removes the need for a separate HDMI signal extension solution. The switcher’s integrated USB extension addresses the challenge of connecting between USB devices at remote locations, accommodating up to four host PCs through USB 2.0 type B and USB-C ports, and remotely over HDBaseT. Among the dozens of new product launches and upgrades announced at 2024 NAB Show, Ross Video unveiled Carbonite Code, a software-based production switcher that was built specifically for NDI workflows. The product announcement comes just a few months after Ross announced a strategic partnership with NDI.

Expected this summer, Carbonite Code supports 30 NDI inputs and six outputs, with three M/Es, four chromakeys, and a 48-channel audio mixer. It also includes three multiviewers, each displaying up to 16 sources, and works with Ross TouchDrive control panels.

Standards and protocol support further includes Dolby Vision, HDR10, fully licensed HDCP 2.2 compatibility, deep color support up to UHD/4K 30Hz 4:4:4/12 bits or 60Hz 4:4:4/8 bit and a full buffer system that manages TMDS re-clocking / signal re-generation, HDCP authentication to source and display, and EDID Control handshake. EDID management utilizes an internal handshake library in addition to native EDID data copied from the output/display. 

Biamp introduced EasyConnect MPX 100, which effortlessly adds BYOM calls to UC rooms. The MPX 100 is an easy-to-use media switcher designed for conference rooms equipped with a dedicated UC room system, such as a Microsoft Teams Room or Zoom Room, but from which a user occasionally needs to use an alternate UC platform. The MPX 100 media switcher connects two hosts to the room peripherals and automatically switches between them. The MPX 100 installs between the UC Room host and the conference room peripherals. When a user needs to use an alternate UC platform, they can simply connect a laptop or other personal device to the second MPX 100 input and it will automatically switch away from the primary UC host system and connect the user device to the in-room AV peripherals. Then, the user can launch the alternate UC meeting from their mobile device and hold the meeting as normal. As soon as the user disconnects, the MPX 100 returns the room peripherals to the dedicated UC room host.

The new HVS-190 supports high-bandwidth NDI and NDI|HX input and output and marks the continued expansion of the popular HVS switcher series. The HVS-190 features frame synchronization and processing amplification on all inputs and is available in two models. Both HVS-190 models include keyer, chroma keyer, multi viewer, still/clip store, macro, and event memory functions as standard. A simple, browser-based control and setup is also supported for both. The HVS-190 switchers are easily expandable, with additional multi view outputs, increased storage with an added SSD, and optional auxiliary and tally unit(s).  

NDI connectivity is provided via an optional card, the HVS-NIF. Each card provides four inputs/two outputs. Add up to three cards with the HVS-190S and two with the HVS-190I. With the HVS-190 switchers, users can add output from PTZ cameras, webcams, smartphone camera apps, computer content, and other sources and route video/audio from a single switcher to multiple devices. It also provides two-way communication with multiple video, audio, control, or tally systems using only Ethernet cables. SDI playout and IP streaming occur simultaneously, enabling mixed or coordinated broadcasts of both sources.

NDI connectivity enables packaged solutions to be assembled and operated easily. A typical configuration might be the FOR-A HVS-490 or HVS-190 production switcher, teamed with the MFR-3100EX all-in-one-production center, Odyssey Insight Server and ClassX graphics—all of which have NDI options for seamless operation. Introduced at IBC 2022 in September, FOR-A’s software-based live production platform, SOAR-A, boasts an expandable IP-based architecture and supports the conversion and delivery of SD, HD, 4K and NDI to ST 2110 signals. It is compatible with WebRTC and utilizes RIST (Reliable Internet Streaming Transport).

The compact design is perfect for portable live production, with the rear of the switcher including the connections for 3G-SDI inputs, 3G-SDI aux outputs, balanced audio and Ethernet for control. The top 4 M/E model even includes RS-422 for serial control and MADI digital audio connections.

With a control panel built into the front panel, customers can simply walk up and operate the ATEM Constellation at any time. Plus, the front panel control buttons are the same premium type used on full-sized panels, so they are extremely reliable. Customers can even control keyers, media and fade to black from the front panel. The front panel LCD and menu buttons also allow almost every single operational feature of the switcher to be accessed.

The ATEM Constellation HD family features models that have up to 40 independent 3G-SDI inputs, with each input featuring its own dedicated up and cross converter. That means it's possible to convert any 1080p input source to the video standard of the switcher. That means customers could have each switcher SDI input running a different television standard and all the inputs will just work.

The ATEM Constellation HD family has a massive number of fully independent 3G-SDI outputs. Even the small 1 M/E model has 6 x 3G-SDI outputs. Then the 2 M/E model has 12 x 3G-SDI outputs, and the 4 M/E model has a massive 24 x 3G-SDI outputs. These SDI outputs are very powerful because customers can independently route any SDI input or any internal source to each SDI output. Or use the SDI outputs for ISO recorders, where each deck will get a resynchronized switcher input with matching timecode. All SDI outputs contain program audio, RP-188 timecode, SDI camera control, tally, and talkback.

The built-in multiview lets customers monitor multiple sources on a single monitor. The 1 M/E model includes one multiview, the 2 M/E model has two independent multiviews and the 4 M/E model has four independent multiviews. All external SDI inputs, plus all internal video sources can be routed to any view. All multiviews are fully customizable and can be independently set to 4, 7, 10, 13 or 16 simultaneous views. Customers can add the tally border plus source label and VU meters as an overlay on each view. Plus, a red and green border will show tally on each view, so customers know what sources are on air.

ATEM Constellation HD includes a wide range of broadcast quality native transitions such as mix, dip, wipe, and more. All transitions can be customized in the system control menus with adjustments for border color, border width, position, direction, and a lot more. The ATEM Constellation switcher includes a powerful digital video effects processor for DVE transitions, which can be used to squeeze the current picture off screen revealing a new video under it. The DVE can even be used to create graphic wipe transitions.

To keep crews working as a single creative team, ATEM Constellation features built in talkback. Talkback supports a 5 pin XLR headset connector, plus a rear mounted RJ12 connector for interfacing with industry standard talkback systems such as ClearCom or RTS. Customers get full talkback control including program and engineering loops, sidetone control for hearing the headset mic into the headphones and program mix. ATEM Constellation HD also supports SDI talkback that uses SDI channels 15 and 16 for 2-way communication with Blackmagic Design cameras. Customers can even use channels 13 and 14 for engineering talkback.

The built-in media pool stores broadcast quality RGBA graphics and animations that can be played back instantly by the 2 or 4 media players. The built-in media pool holds graphics for use with the media players and the 1 M/E model can hold 20 stills and 200 frame animations, the 2 M/E model can hold 40 stills and 400 frame animations, and the 4 M/E model can hold 60 stills and 600 frame animations.

For news or virtual set work, ATEM Constellation HD is perfect as it features many of ATEM advanced keyers for high-quality chroma or luminance keying. The chroma keyer is incredibly powerful and features a color picker to sample background colors for automatic generation of the key parameters. Customers get precise controls for edge and flare, and there is even a foreground color corrector so customers can match the "look" of the foreground layer to the background layer making seamless compositions possible. The keyer can also be used for pattern and DVE keying. Customers get 4 ATEM Advanced Keyers on the 1 M/E model, 8 ATEM Advanced Keyers on the 2 M/E model and 16 ATEM Advanced Keyers on the 4 M/E model.

With four upstream chroma keyers per M/E row, customers get the perfect solution for building virtual sets. With so many ATEM advanced chroma keyers, customers can use a keyer per camera to create a seamless composition of the camera over the custom background. Even the 1 M/E model has enough keyers to generate a 4-camera virtual set. Customers can use external image processors for virtual sets, or customers can even build a fixed camera virtual set by loading pre rendered still image backgrounds from the media players and media pool. Users can also setup macros to change cameras and load the correct background into the media players. With so much flexibility, customers can experiment to try out different studio setups.

In addition to the DVEs in the M/E rows, the 2 M/E and 4 M/E models include powerful SuperSource multi-layer processors with four extra DVE layers plus a background layer, that all appear to ATEM Constellation HD as an additional input source. Any switcher video input can be used for each SuperSource DVE, then it's all layered together over a media pool custom background. SuperSource is just like having an extra multi-layer VFX switcher built in. SuperSource is perfect for doing picture in picture displays for interviews because customers can set up the effect while keeping the main DVEs free for other tasks. The ATEM 4 M/E Constellation even has two completely independent SuperSource processors.

The SDI inputs will also handle embedded audio and mix audio from all video inputs. The program outputs include talkback, tally and camera control information. That means customers can connect any of the switcher SDI outputs back to the camera for program return, camera control, and talkback.

With a built-in Fairlight audio mixer, the ATEM Constellation makes it possible to do extremely complex live sound mixing. The internal mixer has up to 156 input channels, for the biggest audio mixer in a live production switcher. Audio is de-embedded from all the SDI video inputs and passed to the audio mixer. Then the 4 M/E model has extra audio mixer input channels for the MADI audio inputs. Each input channel features the highest quality six-band parametric EQ and compressor, limiter, expander, and noise gate as well as full panning. Customers get extra channels for the analog input, talkback microphone and media players. All this audio power can be controlled via the ATEM Software Control or a Mackie compatible panel.

The ATEM Software Control Panel gives customers total control over their switcher and is included free. The ATEM Software Control Panel features a beautifully designed interface with a visual switcher and parameter palettes for making quick adjustments. The ATEM Software Control also lets customers access camera control, audio mixing, media, macro programming and even control of HyperDeck disk recorders. Customers can even save the full state of the switcher as XML files, plus all media is backed up from the media pool.

The KD-X4x1WUTx is not merely a switcher. Hall Technologies is launching the HSM-44-UHD 4 x 4 matrix video switcher, ideal for use with multimedia presentation, digital signage and conference room applications. The newly released HSM-44-UHD adds an easy-to-operate-and-install economical solution to Hall's existing line of matrix video switchers.

The HSM-44-UHD also supports HDCP 2.2 and 1.4, 3D, deep-color and PCM, Dolby, DTS and HD audio standards. Users can save and recall multiple matrix routing configuration presets from the easy-to-use front LCD panel display. EDID is automatically calculated based on each of the connected sinks.

The demand for simplifying the deployment, configuration, and operation of routing and switching solutions has manufacturers developing solutions that, on an increasing basis, are designed to automate the process. Companies are also answering the call for more flexibility, and the desire to be able to achieve more with less gear.

In combination with making routers and switchers easier to configure, manufacturers are addressing how users’ needs have evolved as a result of the pandemic. “A lot of the products that we’re going to be introducing and showing this year are focused on the new world and the new way of doing things; for handling things locally, as well as for the people who have to work remotely,” said Paul Harris, CEO and CTO at Aurora Multimedia Corp. “A lot of the products we’ve developed this year solve [these] problems. And they make it easier by bringing everything to one device that can help you get to where you need to be.”

Here are a number of developments we’ve seen in this product category over the last few months.

Hall Technologies

Hall Technologies’ new EMCEE200 4K Multiview Presentation Switcher will process up to four 4K60 video sources simultaneously. Featuring a dedicated confidence monitor as well as presentation HDMI outputs, the EMCEE200’s modular expansion slot design gives users the flexibility to add expansion cards when required, depending on the application. Additional features include Picture-in-Picture (PIP) and Picture-over-Picture (POP) capabilities, a built-in dual mic mixer, and a variety of audio embedding and de-embedding options.

Ken Eagle, vice president of technology at Hall Technologies, argues that perhaps the most interesting feature of the EMCEE200 is that it offers USB 3.0 4K capture, which allows users to livestream without additional hardware.

“It has the ability to capture and livestream video right from all of your sources in the room, whether that’s your computer, local cameras, or a media player, and take that feed directly out of the presentation switch and route it directly to Zoom, or YouTube, or Facebook—take your pick,” Eagle said. “And this is all done out of one seamless box.”

Eagle also points to Hall’s Versa 4K, a 4K video and USB over IP solution for large projects. “It’s a very powerful AV over IP solution that delivers very high-quality video and audio [quickly] around the network,” he said. “It enables campus-wide deployments, large-screen video applications like video walls, and digital signage rollouts.”

Kramer

Kramer’s ASPEN-32UFX is a 32-port SDI matrix switcher with interchangeable inputs and outputs. Its open architecture offers users more flexibility to adapt the unit to their specific and often evolving needs, said Chris Kopin, executive vice president of technology at the company.

“You decide which connector is an input or an output—we’re not fixed to any particular size,” Kopin said. Depending on the project, the ASPEN-32UFX could be configured to feature one input and 31 outputs; 31 inputs and one output; two 8x8 matrix switchers in one box; 16 2x1 switchers, and so on. “It’s a completely open architecture, which I think is extremely creative.”

Kramer also offers the VS-34FD, an 8K-ready 34-port multiformat digital matrix switcher with interchangeable inputs and outputs. “Again, you can build it according to whatever fits your application,” Kopin said. “And the backbone of it is 8K-compatible, so as we’re building more cards for it, we know we have the infrastructure [for 8K] as 8K becomes more popular.”

[ What's the Status of the AV over IP Transition? ]

Aurora Multimedia

Earlier this year, Aurora Multimedia, manufacturer of the IPX Series of 10G AV over IP solutions, announced the IPX-TC3A Series of encrypted 4K60 10 Gbps AV over IP transceiver box and wall plates. Based on the SDVoE platform, these solutions feature redundant fiber and selectable copper fiber in a single unit. The series incorporates Aurora’s IPBaseT technology, which supports seamless switching, USB 2.0, Dante/AES67 8-channel, 1 Gbps Ethernet, and control.

Aurora also offers the HT Pro Series of 4K60 4:4:4 HDBaseT transceiver wall plate and box solutions, capable of transmitting uncompressed 4K60 4:4:4 18 Gbps HDMI 2.0/HDCP 2.2 video over a single cable. There is a Dante option for two or eight channels, and an ARC (Audio Return Channel), which enables the units to be fed to Dante or to the local line output.

Extron

Joe da Silva, director of product marketing at Extron, noted that the manufacturer’s portfolio of fixed format, hybrid, and all-in-one presentation switchers has been updated.

For example, Extron’s DXP 4K PLUS Series of HDMI matrix switchers, with audio de-embedding, now supports resolutions up to 4K60 4:4:4. This line features models in sizes that range from 4x2 to 16x16.

da Silva also highlighted the company’s XTP switchers: “XTP Systems offer a hybrid matrix switching approach that features local connectivity and extended transmission capability using a single Cat-x or fiber optic cable to paired transmitters and receivers,” he said. With models ranging from 4x4 up to 64x64, XTP’s modular frames feature a 50 Gbps backplane, and new input and output boards allow for uncompressed 8K HDMI switching and distribution.

Extron’s DTP Systems category has been updated as well, with the IN1800 Series and DTP2 CrossPoint models now supporting 4K60 4:4:4 switching and signal extension. “Our all-in-one presentation switchers and matrix switchers combine several Extron industry-leading technologies to deliver switching, extension, [and] control, plus audio amplification and DSP processing in a single-box solution,” da Silva noted. Models that feature control functionality have also been upgraded to include Extron’s latest quad-core control processors.

Crestron

Released in 2019, Crestron’s DMV NVX AV over IP switcher is designed for applications that require the delivery of content feeds to a matrix of different displays. The platform has undergone several updates over the last couple of years, including the introduction of the DM-NVX-E760 encoder, which offers AVoIP bridging that allows for integration with HDBaseT solutions, as well as models supporting AES67, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and PoE+.

“The DMV NVX is for installs that require some inputs to many outputs, or many inputs to some outputs,” explained Alex Peras, director of product management, UC, and corporate development partnerships at Crestron. He added that the company is also updating its transmitters and receivers to support the latest audio/video formats, as well as the latest security standards. “We’re also bringing in USB routing, because now it’s audio, video, and USB, as well as control, to make sure that we can make the entire ecosystem work together.”

Netgear

Netgear’s AV Line of M4250 IP switchers was designed to facilitate installation for AV-centric integrators. Featuring the company’s IGMP Plus technology, the M4250 aims to deliver out-of-the-box functionality, doing away with the complex configuration process often associated with multicast video applications. Built-in profile matching, for example, offers integrators a list of prebuilt profiles of popular AV over IP products, eliminating the need for manual inputting and configuration. The switchers also include Auto-LAG and Auto-Trunk features, which enable integrators to link multiple units together seamlessly.

Laurent Masia, director of product line management for managed switches in Netgear’s ProAV Engineering Services division, said that the M4250’s development was a result of feedback the company was receiving from AV integrators. “The value proposition is that integrators [can assign] the protocol they want—Dante to port one, Aurora Multimedia to port two, for example,” he said. “When that’s done, the switch-to-switch connectivity, the configuration of the V-LAN, the trunking, and the multicast, everything is fully automated so that there is no more configuration needed. It just works.”

The What: Extron is shipping its MGP 641, a multi-window processor for scaling and presenting up to four 4K/60 4:4:4 source signals on a single screen. In addition to four HDMI inputs that support data rates up to 18 Gbps, the HDCP 2.3-compliant processor includes an HDMI background input for presenting live, non-scaled content behind source windows. An HDMI output accommodates a local display, while the DTP2 output drives a remote display located up to 330 feet (100 meters) away with identical content. 

The What Else: The MGP 641 features customizable window layouts, video and logo keying, window transition effects, as well as source and output rotation. Embedded audio can be passed to the DTP2 or HDMI output or extracted to the analog outputs, simplifying integration. These features enable the MGP 641 processor to deliver professional presentations that are ideal for live events and high-end environments.

The Bottom Line: The MGP 641 is an ideal solution for presenting multiple HDMI sources on a single display. Its form factor and wide variety of presentation and transition effects make this scaler an excellent and efficient option for environments such as corporate board rooms and live venues. It is equally effective in mission-critical applications where display of live information is required, from situation rooms to control centers.

The What: Blustream is now shipping the new AMF41W 4K Advanced Wireless Presentation Switch, designed to simplify content sharing in meeting spaces.

The What Else: The AMF41W is an advanced 4K multi-format presentation switch featuring four HDMI and AirPlay and Miracast inputs to a single HDMI output that supports resolutions up to 4K UHD 60Hz 4:2:0/4K 30Hz 4:4:4. It features localized 2.4/5GHz Wi-Fi hotspot, seamless switching, multiview presentation, video scaling, and a web GUI for control and configuration. The AMF41W includes auto display control via RS-232, manual, or automated source selection, and control via front-panel, RS-232, and TCP/IP.

The What: QSC has introduced the Q-SYS NS Series Gen 2 enterprise-grade, Netgear-manufactured AV network switches. 

The What Else: These new network switches provide real-time transport of Q-LAN, AES67, and Dante audio streams in addition to Q-LAN video streaming and distribution, simultaneously within the same VLAN, without the need to manually configure or adapt QoS settings.

Each Q-SYS NS Series Gen 2 network switch features standard PoE on each of its ports (excluding the uplink and SFP ports) providing combined power, data, and control for Q-SYS devices. Furthermore, two NS Series Gen 2 models support PoE ++ for use with Q-SYS devices that carry greater power requirements. This eliminates the need for PoE injectors and external power supplies and greatly simplifies the wiring process.

The NS Series offers features that automatically manage multicast traffic on the network with integrated Netgear IGMP Plus to provide multicast data management between multiple NS Series switches. Additionally, an optional built-in DHCP server is pre-configured, enabling automated connectivity for independently administered AV systems.

The Bottom Line: The Q-SYS NS Series Gen 2 switches are preconfigured to meet the requirements of the Q-SYS audio, video, and control platform, providing an out-of-box solution for faster, more reliable deployment of standalone AV networks.

At first glance, the Kramer VP-440X appears no different from any standard switcher, but I didn’t need to work with it for long to realize its potential. Its compact size, versatility, features, and ease of use—all in a half-rack footprint and at a very reasonable cost—set this product apart.

The VP-440X’s size makes it easy to install in small racks, under tables, behind displays, and more. It’s unfortunate that the rack mount kit is not included. If all equipment like this included a rack mount kit, installers wouldn’t have to remember two part numbers and pay additional costs.

Its size does not limit the number of available ports. I had four digital HDMI inputs and one HDMI output capable of 4K 60 4:4:4. I am always skeptical of this statistic, but it proved to be true when I tested with Quantum Data. In addition to the digital inputs, it has one VGA input—for versatility, and for those who haven’t updated their laptop in a decade. There’s also a HDBaseT output. It’s not a matrixed output, and it mirrors the HDMI, but it worked for my situation.

The Kramer VP-440X is more than a switcher; it’s a scaler, too. Scalers are overlooked far too often in basic designs, and they’re an important tool in signal distribution, as we all know. This scaler is versatile and allows for upscaling, cross-scaling, downscaling, or native passing of the displays.

One of my favorite features of this unit is the audio. Many small HDMI switchers and scalers only work in the digital world, but this one allows audio embedding and de-embedding. There is a digital signal processor that will do equalization, mixing, source audio selection, and even microphone mixing. Applications I would use this for would most likely not require the microphone feature, but others may find that feature very useful. The ability to digitally process the audio and microphone is a handy tool.

The only fault I found with this product relates to the physical input; I’m not a fan of the microphone input being on the front. To be fair, there is not much room left on the VP-440X’s rear without expanding it to a full rack width. This device’s primary appeal is its size, and since the microphone is most likely not the most commonly used feature, putting it on the front makes sense.

The VP-440X has all the typical features you would expect, including HDCP, HDR, and EDID pass-through. Third-party control is no problem via RS-232, IP, or even contact closure. Control of the display is even possible via CEC, which can also be triggered via the control commands.

This device from Kramer offers much more than a standard switcher/scaler, and at a reasonable cost. It is rich with features, has versatile installation options, and is easy to use and set up. Smooth constant sync switching brings a more naturally acceptable switching to any application in the classroom, boardroom, church, or other facility type.

The What: Harman Professional Solutions is enhancing its secure 4K60 4:4:4 distance transport switching solution with the release of four new AMX by Harman DXLink 4K60 Fiber input/output (I/O) boards, transmitters and receivers.

The new fiber modules strengthen security and support for extended distances and are fully compatible with AMX Enova DGX 100 Series enclosures. This offers a simple upgrade of existing systems to the most secure, highest-quality technology without investing in an entirely new system architecture. These new modules accompany the twisted pair boards, endpoints and Enova DGX enclosures released previously.

The What Else: Government entities, universities, casinos and other security-focused installations will benefit by using the new DGX 4K60 fiber products. Previously, high-security operations had to settle for either reduced resolutions over a single fiber connection or full resolution over multiple fiber runs.

The new 4K60 fiber models extend the AMX DGX commitment to providing a simplified setup and configuration process. Launched this February, Blackmagic Design’s ATEM Mini Extreme is a television studio in a box. A new and larger version of the company’s ATEM Mini live production switcher, the ATEM Mini Extreme is designed to make it easy to create professional multi-camera productions for livestreaming to YouTube and innovative business presentations using Skype or Zoom. 

Setting it Up

The Mini Extreme supports HD 10-bit color signals and will allow for up to nine separate H.265 video streams to be recorded in real time with up to 70Mbps quality, giving the user the ability to capture all eight inputs and the program video. It will also record up to 10 stereo audio signals, and all the switching information is saved as a DaVinci Resolve file to help with editing later. The Multiview monitor can be configured with up to 16 panels including Program, Preview, Eight Inputs, SuperSource, Clean Feed, Media Player, Streaming Status, Recording Status, and Audio Meters.

It supports four upstream and two downstream keys and can do four chroma or luma keys. The media player can store images to be used during production and supports transparency to allow them to be used as overlays and branding. Connecting the mini extreme ISO to a computer will not only allow you to use the computer to save video from the unit, but will also give you a software control panel. Since this unit can be fully controlled remotely with a computer running ATEM television studio software, you can create an instant control room anywhere you can access the network it is connected to. Technically, the unit could be hidden in a closet or server rack and never be looked at again. That said, it looks impressive even when it is off, so most owners may want it to be visible, and the small size allows it to fit on most desks without issue. I found that at first glance it can seem intimidating, however it really is not. When you look at it in detail, it makes sense and operates with ease. I found the operation to be smooth and it worked with the great reliability Blackmagic Design is known for. It was easy to connect to both a computer and streaming service. I tested this with a basic computer along with Facebook, YouTube, Zoom, and Teams. It was easy to set up, operate, and the audio and video quality are great. It performed better than expected as its own unit and with all tested platforms.

Impressions

This unit would be great for anyone wanting to create a professional-looking live broadcast or as the center of a video editing system. Units like this open broadcast production to clients that consider other solutions prohibitively expensive. The quality, flexibility, and utility of the Mini Extreme ISO is difficult to match even in systems many times more expensive than it is. 

In the wake of COVID-19, many businesses have had to consider how to provide their services remotely. What formerly took an entire room, tens of thousands of dollars in equipment, and a team of people to create is now available in a single unit the size of your average computer keyboard. This device and its little brothers within the ATEM line provide high-quality production value at a fraction of the cost. The controls are so intuitive that anyone familiar with a video mixer or television production can sit down and start working with little to no instruction needed. Inexpensive and powerful equipment like the Mini Extreme ISO make converting a breeze while allowing the production to look as professional as a television station. This unit is great for converting churches and government buildings or starting your streaming/video production career.
