Vanco International's owner Brad Corbin has passed away. Corbin studied engineering at Georgia Tech; he joined Vanco as president in 1999 and acquired the company in 2007, spearheading its transition from a regional distributor to a trusted global provider of professional audiovisual equipment. He was 78.

Corbin helped guide the company through decades of growth and industry change. Under his leadership, Vanco was one of the first companies to introduce HDMI cables into the U.S. market. He laid the foundation for the introduction of Evolution, Vanco’s curated line of professional AV distribution products, and PulseAudio, the company’s audio accessories line. In 2017, Corbin led Vanco’s acquisition of Beale Street, expanding Vanco’s offerings to include internationally recognized premium audio products. Thanks to Corbin’s stewardship, Vanco transformed into an AV distribution and audio solutions manufacturer serving customers around the world.

In 2018, Corbin passed day-to-day leadership of Vanco to his son, Mark. He remained actively involved in the company as CEO until his passing.

“My father’s commitment to the audiovisual industry was lifelong. He built the culture of service, innovation, and ambition that drives Vanco today,” said Mark Corbin, president of Vanco International. “He was a model leader at Vanco and an even better father and grandfather. I will always be grateful for the legacy he built.”

Corbin loved fishing and golfing near his home on Amelia Island, FL, as well as spending time with his family. He reveled in being a grandfather and will be remembered for his sense of humor, larger-than-life personality, and expansive heart. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Susan Corbin; his son Matthew Corbin and daughter-in-law Elizabeth Corbin; and son Mark Corbin, daughter-in-law Lindsey Corbin, and grandchildren Chloe, Ava, and Hayden Corbin.

Vanco International has debuted a new line of Dante Audio Adapters, designed to help integrators connect common audio sources and legacy gear into Dante-enabled systems quickly and cost-effectively. These adapters allow integrators to instantly add Dante connectivity to any audio source or sink, dramatically expanding system design options. They also support mid-cycle system upgrades and enable applications to transition to Audio over IP without forcing a full system overhaul.

AVT Question: Please share insights into the company's roadmap and what 2026 holds for its AV/IT customers.

Vanco International unveiled its new EVO-IP Go. Built on the EVO-IP platform, this a AV over IP solution was designed for fast deployment and user-friendly management. A plug-and-play device, it will run on a dedicated network using managed or unmanaged switches. EVO-IP Go transmitter and receiver boxes discover each other automatically, with no control box, VLAN, or complicated configuration required. When used with Power-over-Ethernet (POE)-enabled switches, EVO-IP Go’s POE capabilities further simplify installation.

[Commercial AV Momentum]

“In fast-paced environments like a sports bar or a brewery, margins are tight, and complexity is the enemy,” said Brandon White, director of product development, Vanco. “EVO-IP Go is a simple, reliable, and affordable HDMI distribution solution customers can deploy with confidence.”

EVO-IP Go delivers high-resolution HDMI up to 4K@30Hz, with analog audio breakout and a signal transmission range of up to 394 feet (120m). EVO-IP Go also supports square-configuration videowalls with up to 5X5 displays. In terms of control, the solution supports RS-232 passthrough and CEC control for display on/off. The EVO-IP Go app, available on iOS and Android, allows users to toggle display power and seamlessly switch sources using a mobile, tablet, or desktop device.

Vanco International has released of the PA6X120 and PA6X240 6-Channel Mixing Amplifiers. Designed to simplify commercial audio installs, these compact, rack-mountable units deliver flexible power, zone control, and multiple source input options, all-in-one box.

[Why Music Matters... for Hot Dogs?]

The PA6X120 offers 120W of total power, while the PA6X240 doubles that with 240W. Both models support 70V/100V distributed audio systems as well as 4-16-ohm configurations, making them ideal for restaurants, retail, offices, and other multi-zone applications.

With support for up to six independent zones, integrators can easily route and manage different audio content throughout spaces. Each unit includes front-panel dial controls for all key functions—including mic and line levels, delay, echo, limit, and bass and treble—enabling quick adjustments without the need for external programming. This user-friendly design makes these amplifiers uniquely suited for fast-paced and high turnover environments such as hospitality applications.

Multiple input options, including two mic inputs, three RCA inputs, Bluetooth, USB, SD card, and FM radio, ensure compatibility with a wide range of source equipment. Rack ears and hardware are included for seamless integration into AV racks or cabinets.

“The PA6X120 and PA6X240 were designed with one goal in mind: make commercial audio distribution more simple, more flexible, and more installer-friendly,” said Brandon White, director of product development at Vanco. “We packed in every essential feature—multi-zone control, a wide range of inputs, and support for both 70V and 8-ohm systems—while keeping the footprint and cost low. SCN: How long have you been with this company, and what are your responsibilities?

Mark Corbin: I’ve been with Vanco for the past 14 years, though as a family business, it’s been part of my entire life. I joined as VP of distribution markets in 2011, overseeing sales strategy, product placement and development, and distributor training programs. These days, as president, I’m responsible for overall strategy, including growing our business and core brands, adding new product categories and markets, and ensuring operational discipline. I still keep a hand in sales as well, managing key accounts in the distribution markets division.

SCN: What brands fall under the Vanco International banner?

MC: We like to say, “You can spec a whole project with Vanco.” That’s possible because we’ve brought together several flagship brands under one roof, which lets us offer both technical excellence and impressive breadth. There’s the core Vanco brand, of course, which includes cables, mounts, adapters and accessories. Evolution is our AV distribution brand, with AVoIP solutions, selector switches, HDMI splitters and extenders, IR kits, and accessories. Beale Street is our premium audio line, home to the Sonic Vortex speakers. Since acquiring the brand in 2017, we’ve expanded it to a full audio solution stack, with amps, pre-amps, outdoor speakers, and accessories. Finally, PulseAudio is an amplifier and audio accessories line packed with purpose-built audio distribution solutions. We’re also the preferred partner for Procell Batteries and the exclusive partner for Monster Power and Surge Centers distributing to the Pro AV, electrical, and security markets.

SCN: While they are not directly linked, has all the tariff talk sparked interest in Vanco’s range of TAA-compliant products beyond government customers?

MC: There are certainly some overlapping drivers. The ongoing tariff saga has foregrounded regulatory uncertainty, and no one wants the rug pulled out from under them. Specifying TAA-compliant products is a hedge: If you’re sourcing gear exclusively from friendly nations, you’re less likely to be impacted by a new policy banning or sanctioning products from a disfavored source. Increasingly, though, TAA compliance is just baseline policy. End customers and integrators alike benefit from maintaining unified procurement standards rather than juggling different rules for different projects. If some of your projects need to be TAA compliant, it’s easier for all of them to be.

SCN: How is AI impacting Vanco’s current product lines and product development?

MC: As tempting as it may be to jump on the AI bandwagon, these aren't the only solutions the market needs right now. We're focused on developing core physical, transport, and data layer solutions that deliver reliable, affordable, full-featured solutions. That said, the AI revolution is driving digitalization and increased uptake of network-based delivery, because AI cannot optimize what it cannot see. There have been some ripple effects for us: enabling more standardized network-based management of all Vanco devices, incorporating Dante AVoIP support into all our new audio products, and launching the fully updated EVO-IP 2.0 AV over IP distribution platform to support this changing ecosystem.

SCN: How important has AVoIP become to the hospitality vertical?

MC: As streaming has simplified residential AV systems, it has introduced new complexity and demands for venues like sports bars and restaurants. It's now central to hospitality AV. Digital signage, room control, guest entertainment, and locale-wide video distribution require products like EVO-IP 2.0 with auto-discovery, video wall signage, and VLAN-free setup in spaces like these which require flexibility and the ability to scale. These projects also face very high staff turnover, so they benefit from extreme simplicity. EVO-IP has a very user-friendly, web-based GUI that employees can operate from an Android or Apple table. Third-party control is completely optional. That simplicity is a huge benefit in this fast-paced vertical.

SCN: Which business area is growing more for Vanco, residential or commercial?

MC: While residential remains a strong and steady part of Vanco’s business, commercial is where we’re seeing the fastest growth. This momentum is being driven by increased demand in hospitality, education, corporate, and light commercial spaces, especially for scalable AV over IP systems. As more integrators serve hybrid environments and mid-market projects with tighter budgets and higher expectations, Vanco’s focus on modular, easy-to-deploy solutions has struck a chord.

SCN: Some experts say HDMI’s days are numbered, while others expect it to coexist with USB-C for some time. As a cable manufacturer, what do your experts (and sales) tell you?

MC: I think the rumors of the death of HDMI are greatly exaggerated. USB-C is deceptively complicated and extremely length-constrained. Certified USB-C cables that can handle UHD video as well as data are worth their weight in gold. That’s not to say HDMI is simple, but it’s the devil the industry knows. There’s going to be a reasonably long transition period as more affordable and reliable USB-C extension and distribution products come to market and undergo field testing.

SCN: What’s one product area that potential customers are surprised you offer?

MC: Customers who rely on Vanco to supply certified HDMI cables for every single project are often shocked to discover we have 70V architectural speakers, two and four-channel 1000W amplifiers, and audio matrix pre-amps for a complete commercial audio solution. Then again, those who rely on our EVO-IP platform to deliver video wall content often have no idea we also have the tilting mounts they need to install the screens. We like pleasantly surprising our customers—and when we do it enough times, they eventually learn that, whatever they need, they should check with us first.

SCN: What’s next for the Pro AV industry?

MC: I’ve got three major trends at the top of my mind. First, AV over IP ubiquity across commercial, hospitality, and upper-tier residential installs (it’s been a long time coming). Paired with that, I’m seeing increased demand for remote management, especially as integrators balance growth with fewer truck rolls and tighter margins. And finally, as integrators take on a higher volume of mid-market jobs, I’m tracking demand for standardized, scalable kits and bundles (UCC, DSP, networked video) to simplify quoting and deployment.

AVT Question: Please share how technologies are helping to reshape the workplace and create user-friendly environments.

When it comes to workplace applications in 2025, AV integrators and technology managers have a fine needle to thread. Economic growth is still behind pre-pandemic levels, and it’s slowing down globally. Technology managers will be under a lot of pressure to spend wisely, with every purchase passing beneath a magnifying glass—but at the same time, they will need to make upgrades. The first month of 2025 saw a rash of high-profile return-to-office mandates, spanning industries from tech to the federal government. However, office occupancy rates are still significantly below pre-pandemic levels. In 2025, workplaces will be packing more people into less space, and they will need a solid technology foundation to be successful.

From a practical standpoint, this means making the modern office as useful and flexible as possible. I anticipate we’ll see a spike in space conversions, adding huddle spaces and BYOD capabilities to every nook and cranny of the workplace floor plan. Technology managers would be well-advised to develop standard kit lists for rapid room upgrades. We’ve worked hard to simplify this process for our customers by offering an extensive range of affordable products: everything from UCC video bars and AVoIP distribution solutions to wall plates and batteries. You can practically spec a whole room from our catalog, even if you need to meet TAA requirements for a federally funded site.

Doing more with less is going to be a theme for enterprise technology managers in 2025. Still, that should never mean sacrificing quality, reliability, or interoperability.

[ISE 2025: The Must-Attend Event for the Pro AV Industry]

Vanco's Next Generation of Networked Video

EVO-IP 2.0 will make its world debut at Vanco's booth 5N100. The next generation of the EVO-IP HDMI-over-IP system is a comprehensive solution that allows for easy and seamless setup for large-scale HDMI implementations. With features including fiber output options, independent routing for audio and control, KVM support, eARC/ARC audio distribution, and Dante Ready capabilities, EVO-IP 2.0 is more powerful than its predecessor.

VO-IP 2.0 has three components: the EVOIPCTL2 EVO-IP 2.0 Control Box, EVOIPTX2 Transmitter, and EVOIPRX2 Receiver. EVO-IP 2.0 devices can be powered via PoE or with the included power supply for maximum flexibility in installation. A single EVO-IP 2.0 Control Box can manage large scale deployments exceeding 1000 endpoints. It automatically detects connected sources and sinks, and AV pros can set up and manage all devices with the user-friendly GUI. The EVO-IP 2.0 GUI features a drop-down interface option in addition to the original tile-based interface, enabling single-pane-of-glass management for larger video networks.

EVO-IP 2.0 offers independently routable audio, video and control signals for limitless configuration flexibility. The solution transmits 4:4:4 4K video @60Hz with support for HDR and HDCP 2.2 and downscaling to 720p. This next-generation solution also delivers USB and KVM signals over the network, with two USB 2.0 ports on each transmitter and receiver unit. EVO-IP 2.0 features CEC pass-through, and supports IP, IR, and RS-232 control signals. 

In addition to HDMI point-to-point, splitter, switch, and matrix functionality, EVO-IP 2.0 features built-in support for videowall and digital signage applications. This solution supports videowall configurations with up to 25 displays, while the OSD mode enables users to upload and display logos, text, or photos as either an overlay or digital signage content.

Centro Makes Debut at ISE 2025

Centro will debut as an exhibitor at ISE 2025 Expo in the Innovation Park area. This builds on its demonstrations at the Crestron booth at last year’s show and at InfoComm 2024 trade show. Centro’s presence at ISE 2025 Expo also highlights its integration partnerships with Crestron and 2N.

Centro enables complex environments, such as MDUs, hotels, or campuses, to offer their users a more connected and consistent experience. Service providers, building management teams, and concierges also benefit from a single source of truth and an easy-to-navigate log of all communications, requests, or appointments, which improves efficiency and gives systems integrators a powerful tool for building connected environments.

QR code integration connects users to Centro’s web app and enables functionalities like room service, resource booking, and concierge communication, depending on the environment. Guests will have the opportunity to interact with Centro’s technology on their own devices, showcasing the intuitive interface developed to suit any brand. Additionally, live demonstrations of the service manager dashboards and configuration options will highlight their adaptability, seamless integrations, and ability to empower effective communication, service quality, and provide actionable data insights that can be obtained through Centro’s connectivity platform.

Cobalt to Make ISE Debut

Cobalt Digital will bring a cross-section of products that address the wide range of Pro AV applications, are IPMX compliant and feature the latest technology including support for ST 2110. Cobalt will be demonstrating its IP-based multiviewer, multi-format routers/controllers, a series of ST 2110 mini converters, and audio monitors in Booth 4K700, but will also be supporting the AIMS Alliance with product demos in Booth 5F600.

Cobalt’s ARIA audio products are a new addition to the platform. Various models from the ARIA line will be highlighted at ISE including the COBALT ARIA AUD-MON audio monitor, and the very popular COBALT ARIA OG-AUD4-DANTE, a quad-channel unit with up to 12G DANTE/AES/MADI/Embed and De-Embed functions with Frame Sync capabilities. The card features two gigabit Ethernet ports, a 64x64 configuration, and a full audio router mixer. 

Cobalt’s UltraBlue IP-MV multiviewers are available as both a turnkey solution with four HDMI heads, or as a software package that runs on customer-supplied dedicated hardware.  Features include support for receiving audio/video content over IP across a variety of protocols and formats with very flexible audio routing, bringing a multitude of options to suit every application.

The flexible, simple to use and easily integrated WAVE routers fit into any variety of applications with support for signals up to 12G-SDI. The recently released COBALT WAVE RTR 32x32 crosspoint solution fits into a 4U frame, same as the COBALT WAVE RTR-64x64. Both feature full-size BNC connectors, have a single 10/100/1000 Ethernet port for IP-based control, and offer RP-168 switching support. 

Merging Technologies Debuts Ovation 11 in Barcelona

Merging Technologies is excited to preview Ovation 11 in Barcelona. The latest evolution of Ovation boasts a bold redesign, enhanced usability, and features that improve intuitive audio playback and show synchronization.

EM Acoustics Debuts Reference Series

EM Acoustics will showcase the entirety of its Reference Series for the first time. Designed for high-quality performance and flexibility, the Reference Series offers low-profile, full-range, point-source loudspeakers with frequency and phase response. EM Acoustics will launch the R4 at ISE 2025, a speaker developed to meet urgent marketplace demand. This release marks the completion of the Reference series.

 Joining the R5, R6, R8, R10 and R12, the R4 combines elegant design with high performance, delivering maximized headroom and musicality. “The Reference Series demonstrates the ability of EM Acoustics to design and engineer class-leading equipment,” said Greg Clarke, brand manager. “It is highly unusual, in fact almost unheard of, for a manufacturer to have a such a deeply cohesive point source range. The unity of voicing across the series has allowed designers to create comprehensive single-manufacturer ecosystems that meet even the most demanding project requirements.”

Audio-Technica’s ATND1061

Audio-Technica’s ATND1061 Beamforming Ceiling Array Microphone has received major upgrades with its latest firmware update, including Video System Control Architecture (VISCA)-over-IP and Voice Lift technology. VISCA offers synchronized control of multiple video peripherals, improving interoperability and meeting equality. Using VISCA over IP, you can position the camera to match with the audio captured by the ATND1061. This creates a more natural experience in hybrid calls. The ATND1061 now includes Voice Lift, a technology that improves the communication environment in a space where voices don’t carry (i.e. larger rooms). Voice Lift makes a presenter’s words more intelligible.

BrightSign’s XT5 Digital Signage Players

BrightSign’s XT5 Digital Signage Players elevate and future proof digital signage activations to create captivating experiences for years to come. The XT245 delivers robust 3D motion graphics in 4K and vibrant HDR video, from Full HD to breathtaking 8K, all while being powered over Ethernet for highly efficient deployments. Crestron’s AirMedia enables secure wireless collaboration in the modern digital workspace. Easy to deploy and manage, the solution can be used in conference rooms, huddle rooms, lounges, lobbies, or almost any space to establish a productive meeting environment. When integrated with the Appspace digital signage application or other web-based signage providers, AirMedia can display digital signage content when no presentation is being made or when the room is not occupied. This turns every screen into a content hub to display corporate branding, company news, or list the events slated for that day.

Datapath’s VSNMini 300 Video Wall Controller

[Startling Numbers on Hybrid Suggest More Work to Be Done]

“Integrators need the capacity to deliver rich stereo audio under any circumstances,” says Brandon White, Director of New Product Development for Vanco. “With PAEXWIR, you can make your stereo speakers the sculptural centerpiece of an open-plan living room, discretely position active subwoofers in a listening space, or connect speakers in an architecturally significant space without exposing unsightly wires.”

What you thought you knew about in-ceiling speakers yesterday is not what you know about in-ceiling speakers today. The hybrid world—whether it is solutions (like videobars) or features (like AI)—continues to evolve as we push toward a more equitable space for both the in-person and remote experience. The same is true for restaurants or retail environments that require uniform audio delivery throughout, whether it is for background music or emergency notifications.

Hearing what needs to be heard is important to everyone’s experience, but we don’t necessarily want to see obtrusive devices delivering said audio. So, what are we looking for with the latest in-ceiling microphone technology?

“There are a multitude of uses for ceiling speakers in the professional market,” explained Nalle Magnusson, product manager at Shure. “Among the most popular uses are meeting rooms, public spaces, and any flexible spaces that require an evenly distributed audio system that is out of sight, but still delivers a good listening experience. The system often provides speech amplification for the meeting room, either from a far-end codec or an in-room microphone system. For other spaces, the ceiling speaker system provides music, evacuation messaging, or similar.”

[Where Are We with Hybrid?]

To Use, Or Not to Use

Why consider in-ceiling speakers in the first place? “One of their primary advantages is their ability to maintain a clean aesthetic, particularly when visible in-room speakers are not preferred,” said Alexander Zaliauskas, director of product management, speakers, Snap One. “Architects specify ceiling speakers to blend into environments seamlessly, sometimes integrating them with LED lighting fixtures for a cohesive design.”

“In commercial applications, in-ceiling speakers are most often used to achieve uniform sound coverage,” added Tom Oliver, Vanco’s sales director for commercial AV.  “That’s a goal for a wide range of applications, including videoconference rooms, public address, emergency notifications, voice reinforcement, and program audio.”

“Distributed audio systems are probably the biggest segment for these devices—in any space where you want music or any kind of ambient sound everywhere,” added Joel Mulpeter, director of product marketing for Creston. 

But in-ceiling speakers are not an ideal solution for every project. According to Paul Harris, Aurora Multimedia’s CEO and CTO, there’s not much use for ceiling speakers in smaller rooms where the display speakers or a soundbar can be utilized. And Magnusson said that in certain situations, it can be difficult to achieve the necessary gain before feedback due to the lack of dispersion control inherent in a ceiling speaker system. “In these cases, a point-source/directional speaker or line array system may be necessary thanks to their much more precise audio dispersion,” he said.

[Evaluating the Office Space Identity Crisis]

When it comes to conferencing and massive spaces, in-ceiling speakers are best for larger meeting rooms and paging speakers. But there are still some challenges. “The construction and aesthetic of some spaces isn’t conducive to in-ceiling speakers. If the ceilings are extremely high, or the space has an industrial design with exposed rafters, you may want to opt for in-wall, wall-mounted, or pendant speakers instead,” Oliver added. “You also have to consider bleed-through to adjacent spaces—though with the right speaker or backbox design, you can overcome that issue.”

Design Considerations

Once the decision is made to go with in-ceiling speakers, plotting the design is imperative to achieve optimal audio and clarity—or as Mulpeter said, it takes “planning, planning, and more planning.”

Magnusson offered a number of questions to consider: “Is the room suitable for an in-ceiling system? Is there space above the ceiling to easily install and pull cables? Should it run on 70V, LoZ, or be networked? Can the speakers be placed to minimize reflections from the walls? How will the room be used? In-room microphone system amplification? Far-end amplification? Music? Only by fully understanding these requirements can you design a suitable system."

[Hybrid: The Next Generation]

“Intelligibility, uniformity, and user experience are the most important factors,” opined Oliver. “The AVIXA Audio Coverage Uniformity Standard offers a great foundation for in-ceiling loudspeaker system design.”

And don’t forget the customer. “Qualifying the customer and asking the right questions are crucial steps in identifying the best solution for your customer,” said Zaliauskas. “Factors such as budget, performance expectations, room layout, aesthetic considerations, and intended usage all play pivotal roles in determining the most suitable in-ceiling products among the myriad of options available.”

Can you consider in-ceiling speakers for outdoor locations, such as restaurant patios? “If the client prefers them, why not?” Mulpeter said. “We’re seeing more outdoor spaces that function as 'rooms' unto themselves, and if a space has a permanent ceiling, there’s no reason why a weather-resistant device can’t go into that ceiling. We designed many of our audio products to handle marine deployments as a baseline for durability, reliability, and weather resistance—if the gear can handle the rigors of the open ocean, it can handle a patio."

“Some in-ceiling speakers can be mounted in a pendant enclosure for outdoor and other applications,” Oliver added. “Of course, you must be certain the enclosure is appropriately rated for outdoor use in your local environment. Most regions in North American need IP65-rated gear to resist typical weather and particle exposure.”

On the Network?

How about networking an in-ceiling speaker system? Simply put, it depends.

Oliver said the ROI of networked speakers is directly related to the size and complexity of the project. “If you’re creating a sound system for a large stadium, networked audio can dramatically simplify distribution,” Oliver said. “For a sports bar or conference room, probably not.”

“In commercial installations, particularly large-scale ones, networked speakers have experienced rapid adoption,” said Zaliauskas. “This is primarily due to the scalability and advanced audio routing capabilities offered by audio-over-IP systems. These networked solutions streamline audio distribution and management, making them well-suited for complex commercial environments where flexibility and control are paramount.”

[A Better Way to Connect]

"Networked audio allows the addition of an incredible range of sources, from streaming to pro audio connections to physical media," Mulpeter added. "The ability to scale up and send flawless audio at longer distances without sacrificing quality is another huge factor.”

For paging or fire safety systems, networked audio can be very useful to monitor individual speakers and "the amplification can be segmented and powered from the switch," Harris said. "It also allows for zone/speaker specific notification—and if the speaker has a microphone feature, it can even become a two-way intercom. For a conference room, it’s not as necessary—but with the right solution, it can simplify installation, as the audio would be distributed by Dante/AES67 and eliminate the need for an amplifier mounted somewhere in the room.”

The Sub Routine

As more corporate venues and meeting spaces look toward a complete, comprehensive sound system, some installations feature a subwoofer with the in-ceiling speakers. While more of a luxury than necessity, most of our experts agreed there is a place for one in the right environment.

“The 'whys' of an in-ceiling sub are often related to pure practicality—the client’s office is a glass box, for example,” Mulpeter explained. “Or perhaps they’re retrofitting an old building in London or Boston with thick masonry walls. In any case, sound mitigation will probably be a big consideration. Those low frequencies can travel long distances, and the folks in the office above yours don’t want to hear the Death Star exploding.”

“It's essential to recognize that no single speaker can fully reproduce the entire audio spectrum with optimal effectiveness," noted Zaliauskas. “Ceiling speakers, for instance, have a limited cone area, impacting the extent of bass reproduction they can achieve. While digital signal processing [DSP] and other tools can enhance perceived bass through psychoacoustic techniques, there are scenarios where supplementing with a subwoofer becomes necessary to meet customer expectations in terms of performance."

But not all experts are fans of ceiling-based subwoofers. While Harris said a subwoofer can add liveliness to music or movies, one isn't necessary for unified communications, as speech doesn't require the very low frequencies of a subwoofer. "Personally, a subwoofer in a ceiling is a poor choice, as the low frequencies are more likely to make things rattle in the ceiling and the vibrations are more likely to travel to other rooms,” he added.

Vanco to Debut USB-C Extender with Full USB 3.2 Support

Vanco International is launching the EVEXUSB32 HDBaseT USB 3.2 Extender. This USB-C host has an extension range of 328 feet (100m). The EVEXUSB32 leverages HDBaseT-USB3 chipsets to extend full USB 3.2 Gen 1x1 over a single Cat6/6A cable. It is backwards-compatible with all prior USB standards and includes both USB-A and USB-C ports for new and legacy device support.

[Trends, Technologies, and What to Expect in Vegas]

The EVEXUSB32 consists of two devices: the host and the receiver. Leveraging PoH, only one unit—the host or receiver—needs to be connected to external power. The host unit features a single USB-C port, while the receiver has three USB-A ports and one USB-C port. This configuration allows the simultaneous connection of up to four peripherals. The receive unit also offers ample power delivery: the USB-C port and one USB-A port deliver up to 1.5A each, while the remaining two USB-A ports offer 1A each. 

The EVEXUSB32 delivers up to 5 Gbps data throughout for USB data and control. In addition to USB signal extension, EVEXUSB32 features passthroughs for RS-232 controls and FSYNC (frame synchronization) for multi-camera videoconferencing or production setups.

AtlasIED will highlight the new CLA series of amplifiers at Booth C8634. The CLA Series incorporates patent-pending Power Share technology, allowing for controllable power levels to be accurately applied to different zones regardless of the load impedance.

An analog multi-select knob on the amplifier allows for simplistic power share modifications; each pair of channels can share the power load in four pre-determined increments, and power-sharing is configurable between each pair of channels, regardless of the load on individual channels. 

The multi-impedance amplifiers are designed for versatility in both commercial distributed systems and sound reinforcement low impedance applications. By giving employees informal space and resources to gather, share screens, and bring remote peers into the conversation, the enterprise can promote ideation and break down silos. In the hybrid work era, the point of the office is to bring people together. The design of the space must reflect that.

Tenmat enclosures are simple to install or retrofit. They are constructed from lightweight, flexible intumescent material that can be folded and inserted into a ceiling opening. These enclosures are placed on top of the speaker and do not require screws or sealant. Once expanded, they can prevent the spread of flames and transmission of heat for up to an hour.

AVT Question: Please share insight into the current state of networked AV and control; what you see as barriers to entry; and what advice can you offer on how AV/IT managers can overcome limited resources or a lack of buy-in.

I’d really love to see the industry get past the idea that AVoIP is expensive. There’s a persistent belief that AVoIP solutions aren’t cost-effective unless you’re operating at a really large scale.

That’s just not true anymore. Once a system is big enough to require an 8x16 matrix, you can deploy an AVoIP solution for an equal or lesser cost, and that’s just the initial outlay. When it comes to maintenance and expansion, AVoIP has a big advantage over traditional AV. You can expand the system easily and keep it cost-effective by just adding more switches, and you don’t have to worry nearly as much about distance limitations; the content can go wherever the network does. There are also hidden savings in terms of labor. With remote monitoring and troubleshooting capabilities, you don’t have to roll trucks every time there’s a problem, and a single skilled technician can manage a sprawling system.

I’m a big believer in buying boxes for today and putting in infrastructure for tomorrow. Maybe you’re not ready for 10-Gig switches now, but you should pull cable like you are. Even legacy gear can benefit from a robust, structured cable plant, using devices that convert and extend the AV signal over CAT cable or fiber. Getting that infrastructure in place is the first step towards a fully networked system, and you benefit immediately.

They say seeing is believing. But what happens when you don’t want to be seen?

In today’s evolving world of hybrid classrooms, meeting rooms, and even houses of worship, having the right technology is important, especially when needing to be heard. However, the right speaker can be invasive, with wires and bulky devices taking away from the aesthetics of the venue. In-ceiling speakers sound like an easy choice—but they aren’t a one-size-fits-all solution.

“The choice of in-ceiling speakers boils down to weighing coverage versus imaging and soundstage,” said Randy Blanchard, director of audio for Vanco. “They’re not appropriate for environments with extremely high ceilings—an eight-story hotel lobby, for instance. There are also times where you’re going for a strong directional, like live sound reinforcement, where you really want a point-source system.”

So, when are in-ceiling speakers right for your project?

Uniform Audio Coverage

One of the advantages of in-ceiling speakers is they are architecturally pleasing. There is nothing jutting out from the walls or taking up valuable real estate on the floor. Being able to blend in with the with the interior design and not disrupt sightlines is a big deal.

“In commercial applications, including program audio for hospitality and retail, public address, and emergency notification systems, in-ceiling speakers offer superior coverage uniformity—a well-designed system will deliver the same sound pressure and frequency response at every listener position, so no one misses any important messages,” said Blanchard.

“It’s often difficult to project sound from a stage or wall-mounted speakers to the far side of a room," added Rick Kamlet, senior global product manager for installation loudspeakers, JBL Professional. "The result can be sound that’s too loud for the close listeners while being too soft for the farther-away listeners. Ceiling speakers can provide consistent sound levels for all listeners.”

“An in-ceiling speaker is another tool in the box for the sound designer, and careful consideration and design principles should still be applied to maximize intelligibility and coverage,” explained Graham Hendry, vice president of loudspeaker strategy at AtlasIED. “A good example of choosing in-ceiling speakers over surface-mount solutions would be in wide rooms with low ceilings. A distributed in-ceiling system will maintain the relative distance from the listener to the speaker and provide even distribution of SPL [sound pressure level] in a space.”

Installation Considerations

As with any audio upgrade, in-ceiling speaker installations offer some challenges. Kamlet said selecting the right speakers and an effective layout are affected by many factors. His list of installation considerations includes how reverberant the room is, as well as the height of the ceiling and the ceiling structure. Will paging be done through the system, and will there be "zoning" requirements? If so, the system will need to be designed for intelligibility. And, of course, what's the budget?

“Typically, integrators face challenges with the amount of space above a ceiling and coordinating speaker locations with other trades,” added Joe da Silva, vice president of marketing at Extron. “To make the design process easier, Extron offers several online calculators for speaker placement, power requirements, and more. Rooms with restricted space above the ceiling often benefit from low-profile speaker options."

“It’s also important to remember that soundwaves are physical vibrations that affect their environment,” Blanchard said. “Speaker operation can knock loose dust and debris, which can then fall into an unprotected driver and cause buzz or other distortions. Vibration from the speaker can also cause cracks in the drywall near the mounting. A well-tuned enclosure is the best solution for most of these issues, that will both protect the speaker elements and direct more sound energy through the front of the speaker, limiting negative effects from vibration or bleedthrough.”

While there are many choices, it sure seems like round speakers are the way to go. “Round speakers are so popular for one reason, and it’s less to do with the aesthetics and everything to do with installation,” said Hendry. “Simply put, it’s easier and takes less time to cut a round hole than a square one in a ceiling. Of course, square grills can be optional."

Installation can be time efficient, which is highly valuable in turnaround times, especially when it comes to form factor. "Lay-in ceiling tile speakers eliminate the need for the installer to cut ceiling tiles, which can be time-intensive and can cause a mess,” said Kamlet. “In addition, because the ceiling tile form factor is wide, the speaker can be made fairly shallow, allowing it to fit in locations where deeper loudspeakers may not fit, or where there may be obstructions in the ceiling."

Sound Check

With these types of speakers not being mounted, do they still provide solid sound? Hendry said the stigma of an in-ceiling loudspeaker being an inferior solution should be long gone. 

“An in-ceiling speaker can be full bandwidth, high sensitivity, with excellent constant directivity characteristics," Hendry added. "In-ceiling speakers may be used in installations along with conventional surface mount loudspeakers installed in various other parts of the same project, so it’s important to have consistency throughout. Most of the audience under an in-ceiling loudspeaker will not be on axis with the loudspeaker, so off-axis performance should be a massive consideration—and one that is often overlooked.”

“A distributed in-ceiling speaker system provides even coverage across an entire area,” explained da Silva. "It’s very easy to leverage 70V/100V amplifiers to power dozens of speakers per channel, ensuring listeners are able to hear the audio wherever they might be within the facility. Wall-mounted options can sometimes be too loud near the speakers and not loud enough away from the speakers. In-ceiling speakers are also visually discreet, practically disappearing into a room.”

“They can sound incredible, but it takes a bit of extra engineering,” noted Blanchard. “In-ceiling speaker performance is highly variable—far more so than cabinet speakers.” 

In-ceiling speakers can be paired with other solutions, such as subwoofers, for example. "But you cannot defeat the laws of physics," Hendry cautioned. "A subwoofer, in essence, needs a specific amount of volume to create a specific amount of low frequency bandwidth. Generally, a ceiling subwoofer will be physically larger, and the challenge is disguising that amount of real estate in the ceiling."

"Subwoofers require a lot of airflow, they tend to create resonances in the wall or ceiling cavities that can be transmitted into adjacent spaces and negatively affect the performance of the speaker,” added Blanchard. “They also tend to lose a lot of sound energy out of the back because low frequencies require so much more energy to direct. They really need a backbox to be remotely consistent, but most backboxes also consistently limit their performance by restricting airflow.”

Pendant Speaker Possibilities

How valuable are pendant speakers in installations? While they are not quite in-ceiling speakers, they serve an important purpose in several use cases, like installations with high ceilings and open ceilings. It brings the speaker much closer to the listener, providing somewhat better coverage in that situation.

“Many spaces are built with open high ceilings for aesthetics, but still need even coverage. For these situations, pendant speakers offer an ideal solution,” da Silva explained. “Pendant speakers are also a great compliment to traditional in-ceiling speakers. Many spaces combine open ceilings with drop-tile ceilings, so Extron’s family of pendant speakers are voiced consistently with matching in-ceiling speakers to make for a smooth auditory transition as people move from one space to another within the facility.”

Understanding the many features and logistics of today's in-ceiling speaker is half the battle. Finding the right one is the other half. Here is a selection of in-ceiling speakers from an assortment of manufacturers to consider.

AtlasIED SHS-3T2-HD

JBL Professional Control 45C/T

The Control 45C/T is a premium in-ceiling professional loudspeaker designed for applications that can benefit from extremely wide bandwidth and very consistent coverage from a ceiling speaker with a small footprint. How many times have you thought, while working on a project, “There has got to be a better way?”

Perhaps you knew exactly what you needed to make the system work more efficiently, simplify its design, or improve the user experience—but that missing piece just didn’t exist. Given a few days in a shop, a bottomless rummage bin of OEM parts, and a limitless supply of time, you could build the widget yourself. However, few integrators have that luxury, and it’s not exactly a scalable approach.

Manufacturers, on the other hand, have dedicated R&D labs, OEM relationships, and the capacity to take an idea from brainstorming through to production. AV manufacturers are also surprisingly accessible and receptive to ideas: Many leading AV companies will not only create custom solutions for their customers, but often end up productizing the results. Sometimes, getting the non-existent product you need is as simple as asking for it. 

It's Not Easy Being Green

Designing systems for the modern enterprise means balancing many conflicting desires. The office should be connected and modern, but also responsible and eco-friendly. Especially in the wake of the hybrid workforce revolution, it’s not easy being green.

“One of our Fortune 500 customers has committed to reducing their greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2045,” said Tomer Mann, chief revenue officer for 22Miles. “Always-on room signage is not compatible with that vision, but to support the dynamics of the modern workplace, they still need a frictionless experience for booking meeting rooms and hot desks. They asked us to find an eco-friendly way to deliver our world-class space management solution.”

The request led to a new partnership between 22Miles and EcoPUK, makers of “sustainably smarter signage.” EcoPUK manufactures panels from sustainable materials, laser-engraved with a QR code and other custom branding or information, and equipped with an NFC tag.

It was the perfect marriage of software and hardware for the project: Users tap or scan an EcoPUK panel with their personal mobile device to access space booking software, which is powered by the 22Miles content management system (CMS). The 22Miles CMS has native integrations with Zoom, Teams, Office 365, G Suite, and Exchange. With a couple of taps, users can verify whether a space is available, view alternate spaces, book a meeting, add a videoconference link, and send invitations to colleagues. 22Miles is now the exclusive global distributor for the EcoPUK solution.

“Replacing traditional digital room signage with ecoPUK results in serious emissions savings,” said Mann. “The initiative works because the solution also offers a great employee experience.”

We’ve Already Got One

A livestreaming setup is never quite done. There’s always something to upgrade, new software to learn, or one more piece of gear needed to make everything run smoothly. The constant cycle of improvement can result in a hopelessly complex setup, leading some customers to declare, “Enough! Can’t we just use what we already have?”

That’s exactly how MIDI control came to PTZOptics cameras. “We got a request from a house of worship customer, asking if we could enable them to call camera presets using Pro Tools,” recalled Geoff Robinson, product manager for PTZOptics. “They were already using a DAW [digital audio workstation] to control most aspects of the service, and they didn’t want to add a whole separate controller just for the cameras.”

PTZOptics initially created a limited MIDI control application that recalled presets using specific MIDI notes, which it made available to all its customers for free. “Why not?” said Geoff. “We’d already built it, and it just made our gear more valuable.”

The experiment caught the attention of the MIDI Association, which reached out in early 2022 and asked if PTZOptics had any plans to expand its MIDI control capabilities. Six weeks later, PTZOptics rolled out fully configurable MIDI control for its entire line of PTZ cameras.

Users can control a PTZOptics camera using any MIDI device, from a DAW to a soundboard, from a synthesizer to a pedal. They can choose the MIDI notes they want to use and assign them to commands such as set and call camera preset; pan, tilt, and zoom; or speed up or slow down camera movements. Musicians, worship teams, DJs, and other artists no longer need to buy a PTZ controller for livestreaming or video production. If they have a MIDI device, they’ve already got one.

Out of the Park

Many AV pros volunteer to provide media support for church and community events. The equipment these venues can afford is often ill-suited to their purpose, and it can be difficult to make things measurably better while staying within budget.

That was the case when Brandon White, director of new product development at Vanco, volunteered to help improve the audio for the New York-based Saratoga Springs Little League. Saratoga Springs was looking for a big-league experience on a little-league budget: They wanted to not only call plays, but incorporate music, sound effects, and other audio. The audio source for these production flourishes was usually a volunteer’s personal phone.

Announcers needed a way to connect both a microphone and an audio source—and independently control their volumes. A production suite would have been overcomplicated (and over budget) for this project. If only there was a way to let volunteers easily connect an audio source and mix it with the mic without a board or a booth. White sketched out an idea based on this need, brought it to work, and Vanco’s PulseAudio PA-EXMIX was born.

The PA-EXMIX is a combination mixer and microphone extender, comprised of a transmitter and receiver. The transmitter accepts up to two audio inputs—one XLR and one AUX—and has a simple manual dial that allows the user to adjust the balance between them. Both signals can be extended up to 300m over a single Cat 5e/6 cable.

“There are countless volunteers like me who want to add a little production value without spending tens of thousands of dollars or making the system too complicated for a non-technical person to operate,” said White. “It feels really great to create a simple, affordable solution to this kind of problem.”

PA-EXMIX Mixing Microphone and Analog Audio Extender

The PA-EXMIX extends analog audio signals up to 984 feet (300m). It is comprised of two units: a transmitter and receiver. The transmitter captures up to two audio inputs (XLR and AUX) and carries them over a single Cat5e/6 cable. The receiver converts the signal to balanced XLR and 3.5 mm stereo audio outputs. Both units are powered by a single power supply on the receiver end using Power over Cable (PoC).

The PA-EXMIX supports both dynamic and condenser mics. Users can easily mix between the XLR and stereo audio inputs using a built-in dial on the transmitter unit.

PA-TXMIX Digital/Analog Audio Transmitter

The PS-TXMIX is a digital/analog audio transmitter that can be used to expand a PA-EXMIX system. Integrators can create PA-EXMIX solutions with more than two audio sources by adding PT-TXMIX transmitters and cascading them over a single Cat5e/6 cable. Each of the nominated products were submitted by their respective manufacturers. Winners were chosen by industry professionals through a ballot accessed through avnetwork.com. The product entered must have first shipped between January 1, 2021, and April 8, 2022. Up to two winners were selected in each category.

At long-last, mask mandates are being lifted and the migration back to the office and classroom has begun. But the pandemic changed the course of many products that will be integrated this year and going forward.

IP Former

Barix’s IP Former hardware turns existing analog loudspeakers into feature-rich, networked, PoE-powered IP speakers. It provides an IP network interface, audio stream decoder, and amplifier front end for a two- to eight-ohm speaker. New AES67 support enables interoperability with Dante-compatible products and AES67-based audio-over-IP networks. Also new is direct integration with Barix’s IC Paging solution, enabling IP Former devices to be used as audio playout endpoints with zone and multi-master support in the company’s advanced, IP-based paging and intercom platform. Additional recent enhancements include synchronization of audio playout across multiple speakers in the same area over shared IP infrastructure.

OG-DANTE-12GAM

AJA’s OG-DANTE-12GAM is a 12G-SDI to Dante IP audio bridge. The high-density solution allows users to easily bridge 12G, 6G, and 3G SDI sources with embedded audio to and from the Dante IP audio ecosystem with 64 channels of simultaneous bridging per card. OG-DANTE-12GAM features industry-wide compatibility with openGear frames, allowing for up to 640 channels of SDI/Dante audio bridging within a single standard 2RU frame like AJA’s OG-X-FR housing 10 cards. 

Evolution EVEX4K70

Vanco’s Evolution EVEX4K70 4K HDR Extender delivers 4K HDMI signals at 60Hz, 4:4:4 sampling, HDR, and bi-directional PoE up to 230 feet (70 meters) over a single Cat6 cable with zero latency. With the COVID-19 pandemic bringing about a renaissance in residential audiovisual solutions, the term “resimercial” may be more important now than ever to commercial integration firms.

On Sept. 1–3, audiovisual professionals will gather in Indianapolis, IN, for the 2021 CEDIA Expo–the first major in-person AV trade show in over 18 months. While family and friends have been shut in, we have discovered that videoconferencing technology is not that difficult to master and is as, or more, rewarding than our streaming services. While admittedly we lose much in forsaking face-to-face interaction, there has nonetheless been a proliferation of creativity activity, from dining room table to corporate halls. I am grateful for what joins us together, and the many opportunities we have had to grow in compassionate understanding of one another this year.

In a year that has brought so much uncertainty and doubt, 2020 has given me plenty to be thankful for… In March, when the economy tanked, my employer, Spinitar, fought hand-over-fist to keep their employees employed, and succeeded. In July, my husband and I welcomed our second beautiful baby girl, Dani Jo, who was healthy and bright-eyed from the moment she was born. In October, with the help of fellow #AVTweeps, family and friends, Spinitar raised $55,000 in charitable donations for City of Hope, a leading cancer research hospital in Southern California. Overall, while 2020 left a negative impression in our history books, it wasn’t too bad to me. The What:  Vanco International has launched EVO-IP LITE, an HDMI over IP solution developed from the Evolution EVO-IP platform; it is designed for residential, light commercial, and even larger commercial installations with video resolutions up to 1080p. 

The What Else: The EVO-IP HDMI over IP system is a scalable option for AV device management in installations of any size. Installers can use EVO-IP to manage, automate, transmit, and receive audio/video signals, setup digital signage solutions such as video wall applications, and control hundreds of devices over a local network.

Because not all installations (or certain sections of larger installations) require 4K video resolutions, or digital signage solutions. EVO-IP LITE utilizes the same control box and GUI platform as the original EVO-IP, but with one SKU that can be used as either a transmitter or receiver, making it an ideal and cost-effective solution for installers looking for a simple system for matrix, switching, and splitting source(s) to display(s) up to 1080p@60Hz resolution. 

The Bottom Line: EVO-IP LITE also includes analog and digital audio breakouts at the source end, IR and RS232 pass-through, and full cloud control through the current EVO-IP apps and interfaces for scheduling events, remote monitoring, and iOS and Android app control. 

Whether it’s security camera feeds, videoconferences, or an all-hands meeting, real-time video is increasingly going over IP networks, both local (LAN) and wide area (WAN). Sending audio and video signals over IP (AV over IP) promises to save time and enhance scalability, but it also presents immediate challenges, such as ensuring quality of service (QoS). AV providers must ensure minimal latency so that packet loss or jitter does not distract from the overall video experience. 

Video is bandwidth-heavy, but the ratio of quality to bandwidth consumed and video flow control are improving. AV over IP encoder/decoder ports saw a 130 percent growth in sales last year, according to Futuresource Consulting, the UK-based analysis firm. In stadiums, government halls, worship facilities, and universities, where real-time video is desired but low latency is essential, integrators have more options from which to choose. 

A New Year, A New Program

Clint Hoffman, CEO of Kramer USA, sees growing interest in real-time video over IP systems—and AV over IP in general—and thinks 2019 will be a banner year of sorts. “We’re seeing AV over IP being used in many applications instead of traditional matrix routing and traditional proprietary signal highways like HDMI and HDBaseT.”

Instead of bringing in a fixed matrix, and then laying in dedicated signal highways that are AV-proprietary, both tech managers and integrators see the benefit of routing virtually, creating a virtual matrix using AV over IP.

“We certainly are seeing an uptick in stadiums—we have a tremendous application at a stadium in Sweden,” Hoffman added.

Kramer has 136 decoders as part of a sophisticated AV over IP system in a U.S. casino. Hoffman also sees real-time video on the rise in colleges and universities.

Mark D’Addio, senior vice president of sales and marketing at VITEC, also sees stadiums as an ideal fit for real-time video over IP, where low latency is expected and high quality is needed. “They [stadium operators] don’t want to have a lot of delay, especially at screens where you can see the action from a luxury suite.”

Flexibility

Michael Brandes, QSC’s product manager for Q-SYS video, agrees that IP-based video provides an enhanced level of flexibility. “I think the flexibility that network video provides—what we call right-sized matrices, where you’re not bound by symmetrical views—will catalyze growth in this space.”

The basics of AV over IP infrastructure

He explained that, with networked video, you can create a 5-input-by-200-output matrix more affordably than you could in the days of fixed point-to-point video. Also, the AVoIP paradigm is no longer considered bleeding edge. “Customers are at the point now where they’re using enough networked controls, systems, and networked audio systems—certainly in QSC’s case—where the aversion to networking has diminished,” he added.

Indeed, the industry has embraced convergence for a long time, but in reality, convergence is a continuum. “We’ve moved to digital video signals, but that’s not convergence,” Brandes said. “We’ve put TCP socket connections on projectors so that we can monitor them, but that’s not really convergence, either,” he argued.

But now we have manufacturers like QSC, who make products that work and meet AV needs, including new video products for the meeting room that will be unveiled this month.

What’s the status of the AV over IP transition?

Still 1080p, But 4K Over IP Is Coming Quickly

While many of today’s customers are still looking at 1080p HD over IP, just as many are building the infrastructure to support 4K over IP down the road. It is a future-proofing measure that makes sense.

“We already have 4K encoders and decoders,” said D’Addio. VITEC’s MGW Ace Decoder is a high-performance IP decoding appliance that supports the latest bandwidth-efficient HEVC/H.265 and H.264/AVC compression standards, and it will be upgradable to 4K. “HEVC and 4K go hand in hand for a lot of customers. It is true that when you move to 4K video, you’re increasing the bandwidth, so whatever you can do to minimize or to optimize the stream is great. With VITEC’s HEVC technology, which we’re scaling up to 4K, this is a big deal. You can have a really nice stream in 4K that may be only 15 or even 10 megabits per second.”

Government applications continues to drive real-time video over IP. From local government to the military to the U.S. House of Representatives, where VITEC has products, real-time streaming can serve video around a building, so people can watch video on a desktop using a browser, or they can view video on endpoint set-top boxes connected to TVs. Some users stream via government satellites.

Extending to Mobile

With AVoIP, managers can stream to mobile devices in addition to delivering feeds to installed screens on-site. Some systems with browser-based players offer multiviewer modes, in which users can explore different camera feeds during a live event or live sports game. Bonuses like this help to enhance the fan or visitor experience.

Additional Functionality

Brandon White, director of new product development at Vanco, explained that another benefit of IP-based video systems is increased functionality. “We’re incorporating other types of features within the product—not just static audio and video, but also video walls and on-screen display messages and images you can use for digital signage,” White said. For example, the Vanco EVO-IP system on-stream messages can overlay the video, a helpful feature within educational and commercial applications.

With new stadiums, next-generation AVoIP solutions make sense; end users will need to invest in the proper infrastructure and wiring to support high-level AV. But what about renovations? Real-time video over IP is tricky if the renovated facility doesn’t have the right infrastructure in place, if they don’t have the proper network cable, or if they still have RF cable around their stadium or venue. Graduating from RF to IP can be cumbersome and expensive. It can be good opportunity for a savvy integrator, though, to discuss the benefits of IP-based video, since latency is no longer a deal-breaker.

IT Skills Gap?

Another challenge that remains in this new era of AVoIP is the need for IT acumen within an AV integration firm. As Kramer’s Hoffman sees it: “You have to have people with IT skillsets and IT talent on your team.” To that end, Kramer, other vendors, and AVIXA offer AVoIP training courses and certifications.

Content security is incredibly important for all AV stakeholders, which is why VITEC “implements AES encryption, 256-bit,” said D’Addio. “And this is something, as far as protecting content, that end-users are managing. Businesses will often have relationships with Comcast or with the TV provider, for example. We have several different options for protecting content, and we support end-to-end services with AES encryption and decryption—any type of stream.”

The key, D’Addio added, is that that while fully featured, a system has to be secure and “very simple to use.”

The What: Vanco International has introduced four new products from the Beale Street Audio, PulseAudio, and Vanco brands. The new products offer residential and commercial AV distributors and dealers with the latest in HDMI wireless extender and receiver technology, as well as compact subwoofer amplifiers and Bluetooth transmitter/receivers.

The What Else: Small and compact, the Beale Street Audio A220 amplifier fits almost anywhere and can drive even the most demanding subwoofers. The A220 is Class D, 220 watts, and features a stereo/mono line level audio input that can receive full-band audio from any audio amplifier, receiver or preamp, or an LFE input from an appropriately featured device. With an efficient digital design that runs cool under almost any load, the A220 also features a stereo speaker level input and pass-through, adjustable subwoofer crossover frequency, and adjustable phase settings. The A220 is a simple and efficient way for installers to add amplified in-wall or in-ceiling subwoofers to multiroom audio amplifiers that do not have zone-specific level outputs.

Designed for audio components that do not already feature Bluetooth functionality, the Pulse Audio PABT410 Bluetooth 4.1 Transmitter and Receiver can be used to send or accept Bluetooth signals with A2DP, AVRCP, and apt-X compatibility. The PABT410 includes both analog and digital connections with 3.5mm and SPDIF connections for inputs and outputs and automatically searches available devices for connectivity. The PABT140’s integrated fast-charging battery is well suited for mobile use as it does not need to be connected to a power supply. The device supports voice prompts and Dual-Stream (TX) and Dual Connection (RX) modes to maintain multiple connections simultaneously. With the PABT410, installers can now bring Bluetooth functionality to any audio product.

The Vanco HDWIRKIT/RX kit extends HDMI signals wirelessly up to 131 feet/40 meters and includes both a transmitter and receiver for point-to-point application. Able to transmit up to 1080p HD video and audio, the HDWIRKIT/RX can split wireless HDMI signals to up to four displays and multiple kits can be installed in one application without interference. The HDWIRKIT/RX does not require line-of-sight transmission and can send and receive signal through most obstacles, making it a convenient solution for installations where running cable is an issue.
