At a time where remote crews are getting smaller and more responsibility is put on fewer people, there is no better time for technology to work in your favor. Magewell's Director Mini is a self-contained “mini” TV station. The all-in-one unit includes a switcher, CG with built-in scoreboard, DVR, monitor, and broadcasting system (streaming). But can a unit that's so small actually deliver big results?

I/O and Remote Assistance

Director Mini is roughly the size of a very chunky cell phone, so it fits in the palm of your hand, even if you have tiny hands. You probably don't want to hold the thing for the entirety of your shoot, so you can attach a tripod using an industry standard 1/4-20 thread. The unit can be powered using AC or optional NP-F batteries.

When I was working in live television, you were only as good as your video sources when creating a show. The output is important, but having numerous feeds is critical to have the most informative final product. Director Mini accepts numerous input sources through two USB AV and two HDMI inputs, plus up to three live IP streaming sources (RTMP, SRT, and NDI) as well as stored media.

Using the 5.44-inch OLED touchscreen horizontally for traditional video or vertically for cell phone images, you can cut or transition between live or stored video and audio. Speaking of phones, Magewell's free Director Utility app allows your phone to be a mobile camera as well as a remote “assistant” for system configuration, switching, audio control, and more.

In our university’s TV studio, we need to run long HDMI or fiber optic cables from the cameras to our control room-based video switcher. By using the Director Mini with a Magewell Ultra Encode Plus encoder, the HDMI sources can be encoded for network-based NDI HX3 transport. Other complementary Magewell solutions, such as Pro Convert decoders, enable multiple locations to utilize the Director Mini feeds.

Director Mini outputs up to 1080p/60fps at a 30 Mbps bit rate, but it can accept sources up to 4K and downconvert them automatically. It can stream to social media platforms like Facebook and YouTube Live or other locations via Ethernet or Wi-Fi. Need to store your show? Insert an SD card or just use the unit's internal 64 GB storage.

Facing the unit, the left side has two HDMI inputs with a USB 3.0 in between. The right side includes its own USB 3.0 port, plus the 3.5mm microphone/line input, 3.5mm headphone output, and power button. Positioned around the centrally located mounting screw on the bottom are the Ethernet port, SD card slot, USB-C out, and 12-volt AC input. Both optional batteries attach on the back and are separated by the cooling fan.

Multi-Camera Possibilities

My review Director Mini arrived with an AC power adapter with four wall receptacles for worldwide use, plus two mini stands, sunhood with two thumbscrews, and quick start guide. Third-party accessories such as a screen cover and desktop stand are also available.

At our university, video production equipment is used by all the students, which can drastically shorten the lifespan of said equipment. Although I only had the Director Mini for a few weeks, I believe it is built well and will hold up to multiple operators.

[Drink Up, Listen Up]

After connecting the unit to my home’s Wi-Fi, I downloaded the Director Utility app from the App Store. Within a few moments, I could control the Director Mini from my iPhone. Director Mini can be controlled by its own touchscreen, the app, or a web interface. On the touchscreen, touching the icon in the upper left corner brings up: Create a show, Show list, Album, Settings, Feedback, and Help. On the bottom left is a dotted rectangle with a plus in the center. That opens Create a New Scene with 10 options for sources.

When I returned to campus, I hooked up two Blackmagic 6K Pocket Cameras via the two HDMI inputs. Once powered on and the graphics display finished its starting routine, it was ready for its first assignment. Selecting each input showed the image on the touchscreen. However, when I tried to use my iPhone as a third camera input, our university’s firewall stopped it. Thankfully, Director Mini can also serve as a Wi-Fi access point, so phones can connect directly to the device. The test shoots I did from my office looked great, and I was able to label the cameras using the built-in CG system.

If I had the Director Mini for a longer period, I would have sent a remote crew out to one of our sporting events. The last sporting event we covered had tethered cameras with their HDMIs going into an amp and then to our switcher. Dealing with cables, AC feeds, etc. made the logistics a nightmare. Had I only known about the Director Mini then—capturing an away game with student shooters using their phones, everything could have streamed live from the event, and we could have saved the production directly to the unit.

Anywhere a remote production is required, you now have the necessary tool to tie everything together. Director Mini had more functionality than the $20,000 switcher in our control room. Setup time is drastically reduced; the numerous possible sources connect quickly, and the operation is very intuitive. Numerous inputs, full-sized switcher functionality, internal and external DVR capability, and export options abound. I'm not sure you can get this much control in anything costing twice as much or double the size.

Configurable presets enable easy streaming to YouTube Live (via RTMP or HLS), Facebook Live, Twitch, the Wowza Video platform (via RTMP or SRT) or custom targets. Ultra Encode Plus models can stream to up to six different target destinations simultaneously, including the ability to stream concurrently in multiple protocols. Inputs can also be recorded as files the device's internal storage, an external USB-connected drive, or networked storage.

Ultra Encode Plus's compact, camera-mountable metal chassis measures 4.2 inches square (106.6mm by 106.2mm) with a height of one inch (25mm). Integrated tally lights indicate program or preview usage of NDI HX outputs in live production environments. The devices offer loop-through connections as well as line-level analog audio input and output, and can be powered via PoE (Power over Ethernet) or the included power adapter. The encoders feature both built-in Wi-Fi network connectivity and an RJ-45 Gigabit Ethernet port.

Like all Ultra Encode models, Ultra Encode Plus devices can be configured, monitored, and controlled through an intuitive, browser-based web interface. Centralized remote management and control of multiple units is available through the Control Hub software. “COVID-19 accelerated the move toward at-home production models that require a minimum of equipment and crew in the field, with most technicians in the studio focused on production,” said Jesse Foster, vice president of products and Western U.S. sales. “That requires moving content over private and public internet links with maximum efficiency, and usually requires convergence with fiber and copper. The NIA9205 codec extends the production point, the studio, and the control room, over the internet via highly secure connections using DTLS encryption. This makes the codec valuable for time sensitive IP-based contribution applications that involve critical news, sports and studio links.” 

Studios and remote production teams can also use the NIA9205 to reliably receive and decode content originating from third-party devices, ensuring that studios can accept content from field-based production partners even when other encoders are used.

During InfoComm 2021, when I met with Nic Milani, vice president of product at Epiphan Video, he challenged me to think differently about video and what it could mean to the AV industry. During our chat, he painted the picture of a future where creating broadcast-quality content using video conferencing tools would become the norm for corporate, higher education, and other markets. 

Fast-forward to today. Microsoft is using Epiphan Connect, a cloud-based Teams integration, to broadcast their Global All-Hands events to their workforce. Thinking back on my conversation with Nic, I wondered what changes have happened to bring both companies together at this exciting event.

With corporations heavily invested in collaboration tools like Microsoft Teams and Zoom, the question that’s top of mind for many business leaders has shifted from, “How do I keep all my employees connected remotely?” to “How do I unlock the full potential of this powerful communication tool?”

Epiphan Connect Integrates with Microsoft Teams

Microsoft sought out AV technology pioneer Epiphan Video to help them answer this question. For over 18 years, Epiphan has been defining a new path forward for video technology, powering the creation of video content in spaces all around us—from classrooms to meeting spaces and even aboard the International Space Station. 

Today, Epiphan has created Epiphan Connect, bridging the gap between video conferencing and live events. It’s a deep integration that unlocks the Microsoft Teams platform, extracting video and audio feeds from Teams meetings and pushing them to live broadcasting tools. 

“The beauty of Epiphan Connect is that it integrates with Microsoft Teams, a tool everyone is familiar with and is very much plug-and-play,” said Brody Langley, senior partner development manager at Microsoft. “An executive presenting at a meeting can just step on stage and present their content. There’s no requirement for a technical aptitude in creating a high-fidelity production because all of that is outsourced to Epiphan Connect.”

Even for a tech leader like Microsoft, virtual and hybrid events can be challenging, causing stress for both organizers and participants. For the video producer, they want to focus on the creative quality of the content, and for remote participants, they don’t want to worry about technology when joining an event.

Langley added, “A great way to make engaging content is to elevate the production value of the content you are presenting. With the native capabilities of chat communication within Teams and the high-fidelity content we were able to create with Epiphan Connect, we delivered a dynamic, inclusive experience for all participants.”

A successful hybrid global event could have been achieved with more complex broadcasting technology and traditional production methods involving a crew, scripting, rehearsing, and weeks of post-production. But with Epiphan Connect, Microsoft has been able to eliminate much of this inefficiency and cost. 

“Our goal is to remove friction and make it easy on people,” said Nic Milani. “Historically, the broadcast industry has been very expensive with lots of specialized training. Epiphan is creating tools that anybody can use. We can create 100 percent of the quality with 10 percent of the effort.”

Langley points out, audience standards for live content have increased over the past few years. “We consume streaming content from platforms like YouTube and Netflix on a daily basis,” he said. “But when we go into work, that quality is sorely missing.” 

There’s also the issue of experiential inequality. Langley continued, “People should be able to expect the same standard of quality if they are participating remotely or in person. With Epiphan Connect and Microsoft Teams, organizations have a tool that makes this seamless and easy.”

This is only the beginning of the very bright future of collaboration platforms being used for video production. We’ve come a long way since an organization's AV and IT departments were separate entities. Tools like Epiphan Connect for Microsoft Teams can bridge the gap between AV and IT, allowing them to work together harmoniously, using existing infrastructure and adding the creative layer of video to the mix. 

It seems the days of needing a tech wiz on staff to successfully produce and broadcast townhall meetings or training videos might be over. “We have a powerful communication platform in Teams that companies have heavily invested in, and people are comfortable with using,” said Langley. “Epiphan brings expertise in broadcasting. Together we will continue to unlock new capabilities and create new tools that minimize barriers to entry for great content.”

N2600 Encoders and Decoders are available in wallplate form-factors in both US and UK/EU styles. Wallplate Encoders include both an HDMI input and a USB-C input that supports both video and USB 2.0.

In addition to the high-quality, low-latency 4K60 4:4:4 MWC stream, stand-alone box and card models with the ‘S’ designation add support for a high-compatibility, low-bandwidth 1080p H.264 stream. These encoder models can simultaneously encode both MWC and H.264 streams and these decoders can decode streams of either type.

intoPIX released new HFR capabilities in its large range of available JPEG XS capable encoders and decoders, called TicoXS.

The new capabilities allow to use a lightweight TicoXS IP-core for high-speed encoding (and decoding). Depending on the selected IP-core, 4K can go up to 480fps, HD up to 1920fps—both in monochrome or in 422 color sampling and with a single encoder. The IP-cores are also not limited to usual broadcast formats for the encoding: They can be used for any other aspect ratios, including 9:16 for example.

JPEG XS for Slow-Mo: An Easier Path

With slow-motion workflows and replay systems, often the high-speed stream is separated into multiple streams which are sent in parallel (as phases). For example, an HDTV 180fps stream is sent as 3 x 3G-SDI (HDTV 60fps) streams to the replay server. At the system level and using JPEG XS compression, it is easy to improve the high-speed workflow by simply sending a compressed video essence that has the same bandwidth as an uncompressed stream of 60fps but that is capturing 600fps with just a compression ratio of 10:1. It not only simplifies the IP bandwidth, it also simplifies the synchronization between these phases, timestamps, the storage and the replay server architecture.

For the 2022 season, The Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli, America’s Road Racing Series, introduced a new television package to air all races in prime time on CBS Sports Network. Trans Am relied on LiveU compact LU300S HEVC/5G field units to improve the live broadcast and increase exposure to a wider audience with high-quality and resilient video transport to the in-car camera systems.

The enhancement to the live coverage has contributed to a significant increase in viewership and sponsor revenue.

“The viewer wants to be in the car with you and see what you are seeing. It gives you an opportunity to put your sponsor’s name out there in front so everyone who sees it knows who helped you get around the track,” noted Kenneth Thwaits, team principal and lead driver, Showtime Motor Sports.

Almost all video technology has shrunk in size, become more streamlined, and offers greater capabilities. The HyperDeck Shuttle HD from Blackmagic Design is no different. Weighing less than a pound and measuring less than 5.5 inches front to back, this recorder/player provides quick access to stored or recorded footage. If your inputs and outputs are HDMI, this is a great deck for you.

When connected to a computer or an input on one of the Blackmagic Design ATEM Mini line of live production switchers, you can select stored videos to be played on demand as well as record the camera or switcher’s output to an SD card or USB-C drive. Any type of DNx, ProRes, or H.264 video file you have stored on your media may be retrieved and sent to a switcher, displayed on an HDMI monitor with HDMI, or streamed over a network using the Ethernet connection.

One end of the HyperDeck Shuttle HD is dominated by a large shuttle dial, which can be used to browse through stored 1920x1080 HD files. On the top left are the recessed Menu and Set buttons. Selecting Menu brings up the Record heading with input, codec, and trigger record. The input has HDMI as your only choice, while codec offers various versions of H.264, ProRes, and DNxHD. Pressing the Set button locks in your choice.

If you want to use the HyperDeck Shuttle HD as a prompter, you can access it in the second menu topic, Monitor. Here you can select the percentage size of the font, line spacing, side margin, and whether to flip the image vertically or horizontally. This feature alone is worth the price, because any RFT file can be viewed on the prompter, so you don't need to purchase additional software.

[NAB 2022: Blackmagic Design Announces New ATEM Constellation HD Switcher]

The Audio Menu allows two options in recorded audio channels, PCM or AAC. Storage, the final menu, gives you the option of Media 1 and 2 (the SD card or USB-C Drive), USB spill, and format media.

On the unit itself, an LED will illuminate next to “Disk” on the unit if the USB-C input is connected—or before “SD” if an SD card is inserted. Use the back skip or forward skip buttons to move quickly between clips; the clip button limits you to playback of a single clip. There are also record, play, and stop buttons, as well as jog and scroll buttons for reviewing clips with the dial. 

The left and right sides have vents, while the rear is equipped with a 12v DC port, Ethernet, USB-C for external disk, HDMI I/O, and an SD card slot. The system is ready to use out of the box. (I checked online for the latest software version, but mine was already up to date.) In fact, the only items in the box are the unit itself, various plugs to make your AC adapter compatible to the wall socket, and the external power supply.

The Fine Print

The HyperDeck Shuttle HD arrived in time to be used by my students during our university's Summer Video Institute. In the six-day course, each of the 14 students had to write, shoot, direct, and edit three videos to be shown to an invited audience on Saturday.

Students who shot on location in single camera style exported their completed projects to a SanDisk 1 TB drive in 1920x1080 ProRes. When the shoot was done, they could plug in the drive and get instant access to every shot from the USB-C drive, quickly shuttling through the day's project.

Students shooting live programming with our three Hitachi studio cameras recorded directly to the HyperDeck Shuttle HD on SD cards using our ATEM Mini Pro’s HDMI output. During the course, at least, the HyperDeck Shuttle HD became our DVR rather than our older, much more expensive DVR with removable drives.

[Beyond The Tech: Out of Balance]

We did run into a problem, however, because we failed to read the fine print. Only a few of the projects on the SanDisk drive were accessible. That's when I noticed in the manual that our drive was not listed as one of the HyperDeck Shuttle HD’s compatible drives. We also had issues with an SD card that was not listed.

Blackmagic Design maintains an updated list of recommended SD cards and USB-C drives on its support center webpage. We were able to access some files on our non-compatible SSD drive, but that's not a reliable way to work. Better to use a compatible drive and have no issues.

In addition to making sure your drive is on the compatible list (check that first), the recorded file is only readable if the menu is selecting the correct codec. If you recorded in ProRes and your HyperDeck Shuttle HD is set to H.264 or DNxHD, the HyperDeck Shuttle HD won’t see your file, which means no playback.

Easy Access

Once we acquired media that was on the list (both an SD card and an SSD drive), students were able to play their projects. The process was much faster than selecting individual clips on the computer and using a mouse to pick out specific shots to analyze.

The students producing live TV with the ATEM Mini Pro had the output recorded to the HyperDeck Shuttle HD (and compatible SD card). Setting the HyperDeck Shuttle HD’s Record menu to H.264 kept the files smaller but still easily accessible. Again, it’s important to note that the unit will only read the files of the selected codec. Luckily, with a class like ours, we set the parameters of the recorded projects.

The HyperDeck Shuttle HD couldn’t be easier to use. There is simply no learning curve. Our students loved the new technology and adapted to it almost instantly. This product must be the easiest item Blackmagic Design offers (and quite possibly the smallest). Limited only by the drive’s storage capacity, there is no faster way to access digital files.

As a teaching tool, the large shuttle dial on the HyperDeck Shuttle HD got to the shot faster than any computer mouse. The HyperDeck Shuttle HD is a great little “still store” for your files. You can access any files you want and cue them on demand—and it's much less expensive than recording to a separate DVR. As long as your files are recorded in the selected codec, you are good to go.

The single-channel Ultra Encode AIO can encode one live input source—either HDMI or SDI—or mix video from the HDMI and SDI inputs (picture-in-picture or side-by-side) into a combined output. Video can be encoded at bitrates up to 32Mbps, while up to eight channels of audio can be encoded in AAC format. Two concurrent encoding profiles with distinct combinations of resolution, frame rate, and bitrate can be specified, and up to eight user-configurable overlays—including text, images, and a clock—can be applied to each profile.

Configurable presets enable easy streaming to YouTube Live, Facebook Live, Twitch, or custom targets. Ultra Encode AIO can stream to up to six different target destinations simultaneously, including the ability to stream concurrently in multiple protocols. Inputs can also be recorded as files to an SD card, USB-connected storage device, or networked storage (NFS, CIFS or SMB).

For IP production workflows and AV-over-IP signal distribution architectures, Ultra Encode AIO supports NDI|HX 3, the latest version of the high-efficiency, low-bandwidth option in the popular NDI IP media transport technology platform. NDI|HX 3 improves video quality while enabling very low latency. Ultra Encode AIO also supports the earlier NDI|HX 2 for broad compatibility.

Ultra Encode AIO can be configured, monitored, and controlled through its browser-based web interface—accessible through any computer or mobile device, with an optimized layout for smartphones—with centralized management of multiple units available through the Magewell Cloud software. In addition to manual control, scheduled streaming and recording are also available through the web UI, while the unit's touchscreen LCD screen provides status information and snapshot previews. HTTP-based APIs are also available for systems integrators and third-party developers to incorporate Ultra Encode AIO into their solutions.

Ultra Encode AIO devices measure 214.9mm (8.46 inches) by 128.2mm (5.05 inches) with a height of 44.55mm (1.75 inches). Pairs of units can be rack-mounted together with included mounting hardware. The device can be powered via PoE (Power over Ethernet) or the included power adapter. In addition to HDMI and SDI video input and loop-through connections with embedded audio support, Ultra Encode AIO also offers line-level analog audio input and output. For network connectivity, the encoder features built-in Wi-Fi and an RJ-45 Gigabit Ethernet port, as well as support for optional, third-party 3G/4G broadband modems.

Ultra Encode AIO is slated to start shipping in Q4. The existing Ultra Encode HDMI and Ultra Encode SDI models continue to be available for customers needing only a single input connectivity standard and who do not require the additional advanced capabilities of Ultra Encode AIO. Meanwhile, Magewell's Ultra Stream encoders remain the gold standard for non-professional or less experienced users with fairly straightforward live streaming and recording needs.

LiveU unveiled the LU810 and LU610S, its innovative rackmount REMI (remote production) encoders with support for 5G, 4K, and synchronized, multicamera contribution. Leveraging LiveU's Reliable Transport (LRT) protocol for IP bonding, and featuring new multicamera capabilities, the new vehicle and fixed location solutions offer the highest levels of resiliency over the public internet together with ultra-low latency and cost savings.

The one LiveU 5G product platform does it all—vehicles and fixed locations—providing the business flexibility to run any live production workflow. Available in two configurations, the multi-cam LU810 (with up to four fully synced feeds) and single camera LU610S encoders represent the latest additions to LiveU's 5G product suite, complementing its portable multi-cam LU800 and latest compact LU300S unit. In new TVU cloud deployment news, Spanish national public broadcaster Radiotelevisión Española (RTVE) relied on TVU’s cloud-based 4K and 5G solutions for live productions at the Almagro Classical Theater Festival held throughout the month of July in Almagro, Spain.

RTVE deployed the TVU One 5G mobile transmitter, TVU Producer production platform, and TVU Anywhere mobile app for an evening broadcast of Ficción Sonora (Sound Fiction) performed by colleagues from Radio Nacional de España at the Corral de Comedias, using an eight-input HD mix configuration, with one input in TVU Producer used to capture stereo audio. In addition, the team produced a 30-minute, magazine-style program in 4K, capturing the festival atmosphere in Almagro with interviews in different locations around town, including from the Corral.

For the afternoon, magazine-style show RTVE used TVU Producer configured in a 4K cloud workflow, with a PTZ camera in the town hall and three smartphones in locations around Almagro. The production team utilized the TVU Partyline real-time cloud collaboration solution as an IFB channel with crew in the technical area and for communication between the show presenter and contributing journalists.

TV Pro Gear (TVPG) will spotlight its new HD and UHD/4K Genesis II Flypaks at the 2022 NAB Show (Booth C4714). The What: VuWall is expanding its VuStream encoder and decoder family with the new VuStream 510 appliance. Fully SDVoE compatible, the VuStream 510 encodes and decodes in the same compact, all-in-one device, adding flexibility to system design and workflows. According to the company, it distributes 4K60 4:4:4 digital video and audio over standard IP network switches with no latency and supports DisplayPort and HDMI auto-switching.

The What Else: Easy to deploy, the VuStream 510 series enables the extension, switching and compositing of real-time signals using standard 10Gb network hardware. Compared to proprietary matrix switches, this technology provides a new and improved way of distributing signals, which is ideal for projects where high quality and low latency are paramount.
