The CCLi system is available in 80 and 120-degree horizontal dispersion models (CCLi8 and CCLi12). Bose Professional has unveiled its DesignMax Luna DML88P pendant loudspeaker system. Luna was designed to deliver high-fidelity audio for open-ceiling environments such as retail stores, restaurants, breweries, fitness studios, and similar design-conscious spaces.

QSC, a leader in professional audio, video, and control solutions, has announced a strategic decision to divest its DCS (Digital Cinema Speaker) product line to Moving iMage Technologies (MiT). This decision underscores QSC's long-standing commitment to expanding its Q-SYS networked device portfolio, a foundational component of its Full Stack AV Platform.

About the Transaction

As of October 31, 2025, MiT has assumed full responsibility for the manufacturing, distribution, and servicing of all DCS products. The deal includes the entire Digital Cinema Series (DCS) loudspeaker product line, including all products sold under it. This specifically covers the Screen Channel ("SC"), Subwoofer ("SB"), Surround ("SR"), and Screen Channel ("RSC") product lines.

Moving iMage Technologies (MiT), a publicly traded company and a prominent provider of technology, products, and services to the Motion Picture Exhibition industry, is headquartered in Fountain Valley, California. MiT was founded in 2003 and has a history of collaboration with QSC, having acquired QSC's USL Accessibility product line in 2022. “It feels nice to be passing this legacy onto a company with whom we have a strong history, and we trust will continue to do great things with this line,” Heyn said.

“As a longstanding focus to grow Q-SYS, the DCS loudspeaker product line has become a non-core part of our long-term growth strategy,” Heyn added. “However, the DCS product line’s strong legacy and customer base made it a natural fit for a focused cinema provider like MiT.” This transaction allows MiT to take the lead in supporting and growing the DCS product line, ensuring continuity of service for existing customers, while QSC simplifies operations and focuses on its core businesses.

A Laser Focus on Full-Stack AV

While divesting the DCS loudspeaker line, QSC assures its customers that the Q-SYS Full Stack AV Platform is primed for the cinema market. “Cineplexes operators are always looking to create seamless, connected experiences across their multiple space types— lobbies & concessions, hospitality zones, rental meeting spaces, arcades & immersive attractions, and more.

Heyn explained the Q-SYS customer value and key differentiator through the lens of Place, Space, and Applications. “Traditional AV providers tend to operate only at the Application level—offering point solutions that were not designed to connect those Applications across an entire Space, much less bridge the data-driven insights necessary to deliver a truly holistic experience for a given Place like a cineplex.”

The Q-SYS Full Stack AV Platform, however, was designed to unify Spaces and scale across diverse Places—whether high-performance workplaces, higher education environments, or entertainment destinations.

QSC will support this platform-focused vision, in part, through its robust portfolio of loudspeakers, including NL Series networked loudspeakers, high-performance installation loudspeakers like PL Series, commercial loudspeakers like AcousticDesign Series, and active loudspeaker solutions, including QSC K Class, L Class, and C Class.

Audio has often been the overlooked partner to video. With the myriad of microphone and speaker solutions available at various price points, technologies, sizes, and distribution capabilities, this is changing. Even with crystal-clear video, the past five years have underscored how critical distinct, reliable audio is for effective communication. Whether in a classroom, meeting space, or hybrid environment, poor audio—dropouts, echo, or unclear speech—can quickly derail engagement and productivity. But great audio doesn’t happen by accident; it requires upfront planning and coordination between AV professionals, IT departments, and architectural teams.

Effective audio planning starts with understanding how a room will be used. A two-person huddle space has vastly different needs compared to a 50-seat lecture hall, and this context informs decisions around integrating soundbars, ceiling array mics, or voice lift systems. The industry is moving in a very clear direction when it comes to audio-over-IP.

Commercial audio is a discipline in itself. Customers expect audio signals to be available on the network, where they can be routed and processed between audio-over-IP endpoints and controlled and configured remotely. We took that trend as an opportunity to not only develop video products with audio support, but also create an entire portfolio of comprehensive, flexible, and scalable network audio products that make deploying and managing large-scale audio systems as simple as possible.

The move to network audio from the old cabling of the past is a huge benefit, especially for commercial deployments. Network-based audio systems allow for the best scalability and the most flexibility in routing, processing, and distribution. Audio-over-IP solutions deliver sound at near-zero latency. Places where people gather for classes, meetings, and other events now require audio systems that have a considerable amount of flexibility. Extron solutions are a key part of spaces that are designed or retrofitted for flexibility in terms of audio connectivity and divisibility.

From a signal flow point of view, flexible designs often start with beam-forming microphone arrays such as those available from Extron partners. These microphone arrays easily handle a person speaking in any part of a room, and even actively track them as they move around. As powerful as that is by itself, it’s in the DSP audio processor where the real magic happens.

An Extron DSP audio processor is able to route any input signal to any output, with the capability of utilizing networked audio connectivity. That routing is managed by a matrix mixer that includes essential signal processing such as compression for evening out audio levels, filters for adjusting the tonal characteristics of the audio, and acoustic echo cancellation (AEC) for eliminating the echo that can otherwise come from the far end of a VoIP call.

When large spaces get divided into smaller rooms, or participants’ locations vary from day to day, Extron DSP audio processors support preset recall that quickly and accurately reconfigures the audio routing for each configuration. Preset recall and real-time changes, such as volume, are driven by intuitive Extron touch panel or button control systems.

A variety of Extron speakers get divided into zones, driven by Extron network audio power amplifiers, to cover different areas within the overall space. The audio assigned to each zone is separately managed by the DSP audio processor for optimal sound in any chosen room configuration.

In today’s corporate and educational environments, design aesthetics often take center stage. Sleek modern furniture, bold color palettes, and open layouts dominate the conversation. Amid visual planning and transformation, one critical element is frequently neglected: acoustics.

Modern meeting rooms, classrooms, and hybrid collaboration spaces are increasingly designed with hard surfaces, exposed ceilings, concrete flooring, minimalist décor, and one or more glass walls. While visually appealing, these materials reflect sound, creating echo, reverberation, and poor speech intelligibility. The result? In-room participants struggle to hear clearly, and remote attendees are left with distorted audio, undermining the very purpose of these spaces: namely, to foster effective communication.

The rise of hybrid working and learning models has only amplified the need to prioritize acoustic design. A space that looks cutting-edge but doesn’t deliver a great listening experience fails to support productivity or engagement. Poor acoustics can lead to fatigue, miscommunication, and disengagement, especially in environments where clarity is crucial.

Fortunately, solutions exist. Carpeted floors, dropped ceilings, acoustic panels, ceiling baffles, sound-absorbing furniture, and strategic room layout can dramatically improve the sound quality without compromising on aesthetics. Advances in acoustic materials now allow for integration into design elements—things like decorative wall treatments that double as sound absorbers and sculptural ceiling clouds that enhance both form and function.

Designing for optimal acoustics should be as fundamental as choosing lighting or furniture. It’s time for architects, designers, and facility managers to give top priority to sound as the key user experience they’re creating. And it’s not just new spaces being designed from scratch that need to be considered; rectifying existing acoustically deficient spaces should be made a priority. After all, a space that sounds as good as it looks is not just beautiful—it’s functional.

Extron introduced its first PoE speaker, the NF 4C LP. This 4-inch ceiling speaker system features scalable power, DSP, and Dante connectivity. Capable of driving up to three external passive speakers from its integrated four channel amplifier, the NF 4C LP is a single‑cable solution for individual zones within larger distributed ceiling speaker systems. Using Extron’s DSP Configurator Pro software, the integrated DSP can be set up independently for each amplifier channel with essential processing per zone. Dante Domain Manager and AES67 support ensure wide compatibility with enterprise configurations and other network audio devices.

The 4-inch (102 mm) full-range driver features a wide and smooth frequency range of 110 Hz to 20 kHz and is engineered with a practical 135-degree conical dispersion. In voice lift applications, the NF 4C LP provides excellent coverage and voice clarity. Available in packages of two, three, or four speakers, the NF 4C LP meets the requirements of complex, decentralized systems with a self-contained PoE powered speaker solution.

In the early 1980s, Kim Wilde warned us that a new wave was coming. Of course, she was singing about the nightlife and emerging music trends that were tempting the kids in America. In 2025, there really is a new Wave. It's a speakerphone from Insta360 with a unique style and AI features that will no doubt tempt the Pro AV space.

Unlike traditional speakerphones, which tend to resemble hockey pucks, the Wave stands upright. Think cylindrical tower speaker with a circumference of a mini soda can. A bright, thin LED indicator light offers color-coded status updates, including green for power and red for mute.

Above the USB-C port on the back of the base is the power button. Press that button and the Wave doesn't just turn on—it announces itself to world. The speaker rises up from its base with its own intro music to expose a compact, circular touchscreen interface. Don't worry, you can shut off the chime in the settings, but the speakerphone will rise or fall with each power toggle.

It's about 9.75 inches when fully elongated (you have three height choices). The top of the unit was also designed as a perch for the company's Link 2 4K webcam, which has a magnetic base, but that means you need at least another 2.5 inches of clearance, so be careful with that desk hutch.

The Wave comes with a sturdy USB-C cable, USB-A to USB-C adapter, wireless dongle, quick start guide and other documentation, and a padded carry bag that offers some protection during transport. An integrated suction cup keeps the Wave in place, but a table mount is also available separately.

Audio Options

I tend to keep my speakerphone plugged into my computer or dock, but the Wave offers wireless connectivity via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or the included dongle, which can be stored conveniently (and magnetically) on top of the unit. Audio is saved as MP3 files by default. You have the option to record lossless WAV files, but that will result in larger files. Either way, the Wave has 32 GB of built-in storage, so you won't be worried about storage anytime soon.

There are eight microphones strategically placed on the unit, four around the body of the cylinder and four on top. You also have the option of two audio modes, one that captures all sound (you choose the pickup pattern) and another with noise reduction that's designed for meetings. I opted for noise reduction—and then had a videoconference in the middle of a thunderstorm. The South Florida rain was hammering the skylights and the thunder clapped loudly, but the person on the other side of the Google Meet never heard a thing.

The touchscreen interface makes it easy to mute your mic, adjust the playback volume, or start and stop recordings. You can also see the time, displayed in military time presumably for less confusing file names, and the date. A small on-screen arrow provides you with access to files, audio modes, and other settings.

As far as speakerphones go, it's solid. The audio is crisp and clear. I was told I sounded good, even when I was 8 feet away from the unit, and there were no problems with vocal pops. It's also a good speaker for playing music, though it could use some help with the low end. Perhaps an EQ is in Insta360's firmware upgrade pipeline.

When the unit arrives, you'll need to remove a couple of protective stickers and then connect it to your computer. Getting connected takes a little effort. There's a File Transfer option under the USB Mode in the settings menu. That'll help you access the software for download on your PC or laptop.

Once it's installed and you've created an account, it's time to access InSight, Insta360's cloud-based AI agent. It's where your audio files are automatically uploaded. From here, you can listen to your recordings, summarize them, get transcriptions in multiple languages, and customize your experience.

I recorded that previously mentioned conversation, plus I recorded a short excerpt from an audiobook presentation of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The transcriptions weren't perfect—AI will be stumbling over names and less common words for the foreseeable future—but they were solid and did provide mostly accurate speaker identifications.

Summarizing the Summaries

Now, let's talk about those AI summaries. I had access to the Pro plan for this review. There are more than a dozen summary templates that simulate various types of meetings, from interviews to brainstorming sessions, and present the content based on those parameters as easily digestible paragraphs and bullet points. You can even create a custom template for more specialized results.

Generating a summary will take a few seconds, and that time increases as your files/meetings get larger, but InSight produces a transcript at the same time. You don't get one without the other. You can also update the summary using a different template, but that will take more time.

The summary functionality is a bit of an acquired taste. Like other AI-based content generators, it tends to lean toward verbosity. Yes, results will vary based on the template you choose, but you can train it to deliver the results you want.

For example, I had a 24-second clip that included three sentences of me pondering out loud if this experiment was going to work, followed by two sentences from the Wave's instruction book. Using the "Keynote Presentation" template, the generated summary was more than 400 words and included a general summary, key themes summary, three bulleted lists, and a to-do list with one item. For reference, the transcript of my recorded file was 67 words.

To be fair, the AI was clearly trying to make lemonade out of very small lemons. Also, I simply told it to create the summary without making any changes to the prompt. In another test, I read the first two paragraphs of the Declaration of Independence. Using the same template, the summary for this two-minute monologue was significantly more useful. (FYI, the transcription was excellent, too.)

The lesson here is that you'll need to find the template that works best for you and tailor it to your purposes. Speaking of tailored, you can enhance your transcriptions with industry glossaries, improving accuracy with terminology from health, legal, technology, and other fields. You can even create a custom glossary.

The Level L35 joins the Level L38 as a new take on a full range loudspeaker. This three-way loudspeaker delivers musical and refined sonic quality while having great volume capability for its size. The L35 is meant to be mounted flush on a wall or ceiling, standing only 6 inches from the surface, utilizing its included hardware that is already recessed into the cabinet.

This discreet loudspeaker can be positioned on a wall or ceiling standing only 6 inches tall in bars, restaurants, or retail environments and has a dispersion pattern, using its progressive horn design the directivity of sound is very controlled with a high capability to throw a farther distance. When mounted to a wall, a listener is on-axis almost directly under the loudspeaker near the wall with the high-frequency energy becoming more concentrated as the listener walks further away from the loudspeaker. The L35 has extended low frequency making this a true full-range loudspeaker.

The Monitor M35 is an extremely compact, high-performance, with high SPL with beautiful musical sonic clarity standing only 6 inches tall and less than 20 inches wide. Complementing the CCL System is the new CCL-SUB, a flyable subwoofer available in both mobile and install versions. The passive cardioid design features a front 15-inch and a rear 10-inch driver configuration. The CCL-SUB offers reduced port noise and extended usable bandwidth, particularly when deployed in mixed arrays with the CCL System.

Column-style portable loudspeaker systems are most often put into service due to their unobtrusive form factor. However, typical designs lack clarity and definition, particularly when pushed to high output levels, forcing the user into a form-over-function compromise. Solving this common dilemma, the KC12 utilizes a 3-way design featuring QSC’s patented LEAF waveguide (first introduced in L Class Active Line Array Loudspeakers) combined with a true 1-inch compression driver, two 4-inch midrange drivers and a high output 12-inch subwoofer, while still maintaining the desired, elegant appearance of a “column” system. The KC12 produces an outstanding full-range horizontal coverage of 145 degrees and 35 degrees of audience-directed vertical coverage with clean and natural sound at all output levels.

The system features three inputs: a Bluetooth input combined with a 3.5 mm TRS stereo input, as well as two combo XLR inputs (Mic/Line/Hi-Z and Mic/Line/+48 V), with independent, assignable Factory Presets for each XLR input, making it ideal for small events where two microphones are needed for different uses. The rear panel incorporates a multi-function digital display, offering control and selection of several loudspeaker functions, including Global Parametric EQ, Subwoofer level, Presets and Scenes, Bluetooth configuration, Delay (maximum of 200 ms) or Reverb. Bluetooth functionality also provides True Wireless Stereo (TWS), which ensures low latency pairing between the music source and both left and right loudspeakers simultaneously.

The feature set and performance characteristics of the KC12 are complemented by a new, advanced amplifier platform, first incorporated into the L Class LS118 subwoofer released this past October. “Among the platform’s key attributes are layers of real-time telemetry and protection to ensure uninterrupted performance day after day, which is a foundational QSC brand attribute,” Fuller added.

Bose Professional has introduced two new AMU multi-use loudspeaker models, the AMU108-120 and AMU208-120, as well as two new mounting accessory options. These new additions expand the flexibility of the AMU series, providing new wider coverage options while maintaining the high-output sound, vocal clarity, and musical depth that make it ideal for a diverse range of applications.

“We engineered the AMU Series to be scalable and meet the diverse needs of large distributed and small-to-mid-sized audio systems,” said Shawn Watts, director of product management, Bose Professional. “With multiple driver configurations, flexible mounting options, and colors, the AMU line provides virtually limitless installation and coverage possibilities for both indoor and outdoor use. The new AMU108-120 features a constant-directivity horn with a redesigned waveguide, delivering a wide and even 120×60-degree coverage. It is equipped with a Bose Professional LF8 8-inch woofer, producing 121 dB peak SPL and a frequency response of 80 Hz16 kHz. The larger AMU208-120 boasts the same 120° × 60° high-frequency coverage, combined with dual Bose Professional LF8 8-inch woofers. This configuration delivers an impressive 126 dB peak SPL and a frequency response of 70 Hz – 16 kHz.

AMU Series mounting accessories also provide expanded installation possibilities and include a new pole adapter and new suspension rail brackets, as well as stainless-steel U-brackets, surface-mount pan and tilt brackets, and single-point suspension brackets with multi-angle attachment points. All AMU Series loudspeakers come with a UV-resistant finish and an IP55 outdoor rating, with no custom orders or surcharges required for weatherization.

To further enhance the performance of AMU systems, users can incorporate the MB210-WR dual 10-inch weatherized subwoofer. Additionally, PowerShareX amplifiers also offer factory-optimized presets for peak-AMU performance and simplified installation.

Adamson unveiled its new addition to its Vergence Group: VGs. Adamson’s new VGs, the second product released as part of the Vergence Group, is a powered subwoofer built upon the foundation of the low-end impact and versatility of Adamson’s E-Series E119 subwoofer, combined with a custom-designed and in-house manufactured, single-channel 6kW Class-D Amplifier with on-board DSP.

Loaded with a single lightweight, long-excursion, 19-inch SD19 Kevlar Neodymium driver utilizing Adamson’s Advanced Cone Architecture and Symmetrical Drive Technology, the VGs is capable of reproducing frequencies from 29 Hz–100 Hz. With an on-board amplifier and still weighing only 160 pounds (72.5kg) while being able to deliver a peak output of 139dB, this subwoofer sits in a class of its own. 

The VGs includes analog audio connectivity as well as redundant and daisy-chainable Milan AVB plus comprehensive DSP assigned and modified seamlessly via Adamson’s ArrayIntelligence software. The Bose Professional EdgeMax EM90-LP and EM180-LP are now available, expanding the EdgeMax line of in-ceiling directional loudspeakers. The LP models bring EdgeMax sound and asymmetrical coverage to smaller rooms and more challenging spaces and work together with the original EdgeMax loudspeakers to deliver consistent performance across projects where specifications and installation conditions vary.

EdgeMax LP models have been specifically designed for smaller rooms with lower ceilings and challenging installation requirements. The new EdgeMax LP loudspeakers have a 4-inch backcan depth, 60% shallower than the original models, which makes EdgeMax LP ideal for rooms with above-ceiling limitations and tighter clearances. QSC is releasing a major update v2.1 for its SysNav (System Navigator) software. QSC SysNav is an iPadOS and Windows application intended to be used with QSC next-generation, intelligent, L Class compatible loudspeaker systems. The software allows the user to easily design, configure, control, monitor and apply signal processing to individual loudspeakers, full arrays or groupings of both, providing a rich, detailed and intuitive control and monitoring environment, from pre-deployment loudspeakers’ parameter setup to post-show review of equipment operation logs.

The v2.1 release brings a suite of highly anticipated new capabilities including:

QSC is now shipping its LS118 Active Subwoofer. The subwoofer delivers additional performance above and beyond the initially published preliminary specification, now boasting a 4000-watt power amplifier producing a clean and undistorted 138 dB of peak SPL.

Designed to streamline the installation process, the UL24 Series combines a mass notification speaker that connects to a fire panel and an emergency communication system (ECS) with a typical paging speaker that connects to an amplifier, call system, or school paging system. Via careful processing and computer-optimized tuned ports, Theory's ic6 delivers low-frequency bandwidth, punch, and resolution. Even when used in foreground music applications, no subwoofer is necessary. The ic6 also offers extremely wide dispersion to highest frequencies so the coverage area is massive, even when installed in low ceilings. 

Made from premium materials including a carbon fiber woofer, compression driver, and aluminum back can, the ic6 offers a maximum output of 112dB. The Audio Spotlight X-Series is a directional audio technology that creates sound in a very narrow beam. Sonance James VXQ Range 

These Sonance speakers feature the unique Quadratech tweeter with Cymatic diffuser technology. The VXQ range is IP67 rated, ensuring durability and reliability in various environments. Users can configure their VXQ speakers when ordering, with the ability to choose between a standard Micro Trim grille or a Trim-less grille in a selection of standard colors at no additional cost. Additionally, these speakers can be configured with an enclosure and/or a 70V transformer to meet specific application requirements.

Axis C12 Network Ceiling Speaker Series

The AXIS C12 Network Ceiling Speaker Series is scalable and flexible, making it an ideal option for background music, paging, and scheduling daily messages stored in the speaker. It blends seamlessly into the ceiling plane and includes two I/Os, programmable LEDs, microphone, DSP, and more. The PoE speakers are available in two configurations: AXIS C1210-E 6.5-inch coaxial and AXIS C1211-E 4-inch dynamic cone.

Each speaker is a complete system and includes built-in AXIS Audio Manager Edge configuration software to design systems with up to 200 speakers and 20 zones. (AXIS Audio Manager Pro is available for larger applications.) Using SIP, the speakers can easily integrate with a VoIP phone system. Users can perform remote health monitoring, weekly scheduling, and setting priorities via the cyber-secure web browser.

Meeting the rigorous standards of the Zoom collaboration platform, Nureva's HDL310 and HDL410 systems have been certified as pro audio devices for larger Zoom Rooms. The systems are certified by Zoom for a combination of audio performance and Zoom Room functionality. Neutrik Americas, part of Neutrik Group, introduce three new line-level DLINE audio interfaces: the NA-2I2O-DLINE, the NA-2I-DLINE, and the NA-2O-DLINE. All three interfaces are designed to connect legacy audio gear to the newer Dante protocol. 

The NA-2I2O-DLINE offers two inputs and two outputs similar to the prior NA2-IO-DLINE. For environments where both inputs and outputs are not required, the NA-2O-DLINE interface offers two outputs only while the NA-2I-DLINE offers two inputs only. All three products share the same rugged form factor for use anywhere, and their thick rubber protection covers can be removed to mount the units to tabletops, trusses, or 19-inch equipment racks using NEUTRIK’s optional accessories.

NEUTRIK’s XLR chassis connectors provide analog inputs and outputs. Input XLRs feature NEUTRIK’s new asymmetric, ESD-safe push tab. The rugged etherCON connector, used for Dante connectivity, features a halo light ring for clear and attractive status signaling. The etherCON port accepts either standard RJ45 connectors or rugged etherCON cable connectors for secure, locking connections. Powering the devices is easy via Power over Ethernet (PoE) from either a network switch or a PoE injector.

Talk about sustainability in Pro AV. Now, there is research being done on how mushrooms can meet specific requirements for speaker construction.

Well, mushroom mycelium to be precise. The renewable resource has been essential in pharmacy for many years. Yet, mushroom mycelium has even more potential. As a biodegradable material, it can sustainably replace various materials, such as animal leather, packaging materials made from wood, cardboard, or Styrofoam, and insulation wool. 

A team of researchers at Fraunhofer IWU is now exploring another application for mushroom mycelium material: for components integrating complex functions in high-quality transmission line speakers, with the aim to enhance their sound even further. The ambitious goal is to process living mycelium in 3D printing and then deliberately influence its growth to achieve sound-reflecting and sound-absorbing properties in one process.

[Quality Is Under Control]

The research findings on the influenceability (or controllability) of mushroom mycelium is highly promising. Characteristics of the material can be adjusted to the respective application during mycelium cultivation by influencing environmental conditions. This way, foam-like structures can be used for sound absorption or damping unwanted vibrations, while solid and smooth properties are suitable for sound reflection. Mycelium is thus a good choice for both insulation material and housing.

So-called transmission line speakers rely on a sound outlet opening in the housing for good bass and reduced resonances (natural vibrations) of the speaker housing. This opening connects to a tube of up to three meters inside the housing. Such a tube must be folded multiple times in the speaker box to fit, resulting in a complex geometry. The high manufacturing costs alone have deterred many manufacturers from this design principle. The IWU team elegantly solves this problem by tool-less printing of functional components and speaker housings. Additionally, this approach reduces the number of adhesive and other joining connections. Overall, 3D manufacturing requires significantly fewer process steps than conventional production methods.

Further cost arguments speak for mushroom mycelium as a material. Recycling organic substrates as the basis of the material is as cost-effective as processing with low energy consumption. Mushroom mycelium occurs in large quantities in the soil. It is also extractable from organic materials such as straw, wood residues, sawdust, reed residues, or brewery by-products (spent grains).

Lastly, ecological arguments speak for this material. While machining manufacturing processes such as cutting, milling, or drilling generate a lot of waste, it is the opposite with 3D printing of mushroom mycelium: the printable material comes from organic residues; only what is needed is processed. The material is entirely non-toxic, comparable to edible mushrooms, and fully biodegradable.

The basis for the "MYCOUSTICS" project is previous fundamental research at the institute on the cultivation and processing of mycelium material. In addition, Fraunhofer IWU has comprehensive expertise in technical acoustics and additive manufacturing. The institute masters a wide range of methods for the analysis, simulation, and optimization of the entire chain of sound generation (excitation, transmission, sound radiation). It also leads the Fraunhofer competence field Additive Manufacturing with twenty Fraunhofer institutes nationwide. Another one of the IWU's research activities is functional integrated 3D printing for applications in various industries.

From June 11 to 13, 2024, Fraunhofer IWU in Dresden will host BioM, an international conference on Biomanufacturing and related fields. Sophia Elsner will present research results on the cultivation and printability of mushroom mycelium material at BioM.

Electro-Voice introduced its second generation of the ZLX Series of portable loudspeakers, the ZLX G2. The ZLX G2 lineup offers a range of features and functionality and includes 8 (new for the series), 12, and 15-inch two-way models in both powered and passive versions.

New for ZLX G2 and a feature in this product class, the FRFR setting offers a flat/neutral frequency response to produce accurate results when used with modeling processors and guitar cab simulators. Powered ZLX G2 loudspeakers also contain Electro-Voice-specific subwoofer presets that adjust for both gain and time alignment, resulting in full acoustic optimization. Additional high pass (HP) filters are available in the DSP for increased compatibility.

All ZLX G2 loudspeaker and mixer functions can be remote-controlled and monitored using the Electro-Voice QuickSmart Mobile app, available for iOS and Android. The app allows pairing and grouping of up to six Bluetooth-equipped Electro-Voice portable loudspeakers, in any combination. Users can wirelessly pair and link to two ZLX G2 loudspeakers in a stereo setup using Bluetooth true wireless stereo streaming. Local configuration can be completed in seconds using the single-knob encoder with LCD. The new, full-color LCD is larger and higher resolution, offering a crisp, clear view of system settings. 

Symmetrical 55-degree sides allow for a steeper projection angle when the loudspeaker is placed in monitor position, making it easier for users to hear themselves, while also facilitating access to the amplifier input/control panel on the opposite side. A built-in “kick-back” angle allows the 12 and 15-inch versions to project upwards at a 23-degree angle in a vertical orientation. The stance of the enclosure has been redesigned to aim straight forward when placed directly atop a subwoofer (i.e., without the use of a pole).

A choice of mounting accessories is available to permanently install ZLX G2 models: a “U” style wall bracket allows 12 and 15-inch models to be either vertically or horizontally mounted; a long-arm pole-mount style wall bracket for the 12 and 15-inch versions allows vertical mounting with tilt adjustment; a short-arm pole-mount-style wall bracket for the 8-inch version allows vertical mounting. After the big news that AtlasIED made an investment in German high-performance loudspeaker manufacturer, Aimline, the company has unveiled the first models of the AtlasIED Aimline Series Column Loudspeakers. Additionally, the company developed models that incorporate Power of Ethernet (PoE).

Both loudspeakers address many of the challenges in today's installations. Modern facilities are more often designed for the eye rather than the ear, incorporating highly reflective surfaces such as glass, marble, and stone that create significant acoustical challenges. The digitally steerable ALXD column series loudspeakers address these challenges, resulting in optimal venue coverage and the best possible direct-to-reverberant ratio. The ALXD comprises seven models that feature state-of-the-art beam steering and Dante audio as standard. There's a lot of technology behind the CS-800's performance. When people walk into the room, the CS-800 has an auto wake-up function that turns the system on and starts the meeting. Its 4K camera (with 8-megapixel CMOS sensor) offers a 5x zoom to capture the room’s occupants in a close-up or wide shot. With Yamaha’s Smart Framing technology, speaking people are recognized and framed without input from a camera operator.

Using Yamaha's new SoundCap Eye—AI that uses Face Focus Beamforming and other technologies for positioning information—the Yamaha CS-800 camera and microphone pick up the speaker’s location and tracks their movements, all while blocking out unwanted noises. For audio, SoundCap Eye finds the person speaking and reduces background noise with the "hexa-microphone." If there are moments of silence, the Human Voice Activity Detection (HVAD) technology temporarily silences the microphone until someone speaks (instead of raising the background ambience).

Making Adjustments

If you're using the CS-800 on a table, it's easy to attach the table stand with two screws. There's also an included wall mounting bracket, or you can purchase the monitor mounting bracket (sold separately). The included HDMI cable connects the CS-800 to a monitor, while the USB-A to USB-C cable (also included) connects the CS-800 to your computer. Power the video soundbar via the AC cable, then configure the remote to the Yamaha and link it to your computer via Bluetooth.

The CS-800's centrally located video camera pans and tilts with the speaker’s movements. A small LED indicator between the speakers illuminates either white, blue, green, or red, depending on the status. The rear features a factory reset button and an AC adapter input, along with the USB-C and HDMI ports.

Moving clockwise around the round remote control, starting to the right of the Yamaha logo, is the power button, zoom rocker switch, camera preset buttons, Smart Framing on/off button, speaker volume rocker switch, and microphone mute. The center directional pad provides access to device pairing and the settings menu.

Once the menu is accessed, you have several options. The menu opens on the Meeting area, with the CS-800’s 4K camera displaying what the video soundbar sees. You have dropdown options of Horizontal Angle and Max Distance, which help set the camera parameters. The Smart Framing icon offers a choice of Individual, Group, or Speaker tracking. The Camera Preset menu allow you to set specific framing for certain areas of the room. The Microphone menu allows you to adjust Face Focus, Beamforming, and Self Silence, while the Speaker menu has Self and Volume Balance options. Select the last option, Bluetooth, to pair the unit.

Setup of the Yamaha CS-800 is straightforward. In fact, the most difficult part of the setup was accessing the button battery compartment. Once opened and the batteries were installed, pairing was quicky achieved. The HDMI connected from the back of the CS-800 to our large 55-inch monitor, while a USB-C cable end attached to the back of the unit and the USB-A cable end connected to my computer. Having a MacBook Pro, I would have preferred two USB-C ends on the cable, but I used an adapter to convert the USB-A to a USB-C.

Right on Track

Once configured, I accessed the setting menu. Before trying the video soundbar for a meeting, I wanted to see how it worked with just me. A green square surrounded my face and tracked me as I moved. As the only person in our university’s TV studio control room, I selected "Individual" in Smart Framing. As expected, the green box tracked with me.

Even though I was alone, I selected "Group" and yellow boxes surrounded the faces of students on the wall posters behind me. This was impressive. The Yamaha CS-800 recognized faces on the posters and didn’t select the non-human items in the posters. If the posters moved, I’m sure the CS-800 would track them. Of course, if the posters did move, I would have other issues.

Still in testing mode, I moved left and right, got up and slowly paced the perimeter of the room. My slow left and right movements were easily tracked, but when I got up, although slowly, the camera lagged for a moment before catching up. If I moved too quickly, the screen image would “cut” to me in the new position.

Much like a director determining that the movement of the actor wasn’t important, I guess the CS-800's AI determined that seeing the person in their new location was more important than watching them get there. I suppose I can't be too critical of the CS-800; camera operators often lag in their movement if they don’t know where the speaker is moving next. It's still amazing that AI is determining what to do—and is correct most of the time.

My next test was to use the Yamaha CS-800 during a meeting in our medium-sized conference room, with 20 people in attendance and two joining remotely via Zoom. As I mentioned, the video soundbar is extremely portable and can be carried and setup in the new room. It was ready to go in less than two minutes.

In this real-world situation, the CS-800 was an amazing success. The speaker was easily tracked—and when other faculty or staff in the meeting spoke, the CS-800 had no trouble finding who was speaking. The two people on Zoom said they could see who was asking the questions better than the usual center-mounted TV monitor camera, and the sound was “amazingly good for a Zoom meeting.”

The Yamaha CS-800 is a perfect “hybrid” balance of AI, video, and audio technology in a video soundbar. Easily moved and quickly connected, it has a small footprint and is very versatile. Its AI technology makes the speaker the star of the show (or presentation), eliminates the need of a camera operator or sound technician, and delivers solid 4K video and pristine sound.

Assistive listening systems play an important role in creating immersive experiences for esports athletes and spectators. Assistive listening systems can support athletes and spectators with chronic or situational hearing loss by filtering out ambient noise and delivering audio from games and commentators directly to listeners’ ears via earbuds or headphones connected to receivers. Audio over Wi-Fi assistive listening systems let listeners use their personal smartphones as receivers, so there’s no equipment to check out or return. They simply download a free app on their smartphone, select a channel, and listen to clear, intelligible audio in their ears. If they wear Bluetooth-enabled hearing aids or cochlear devices, they can stream audio from their smartphone to these devices. 

Assistive listening systems help players and fans overcome the challenges of hearing loss, distance from the audio source, background noise, language, and acoustics that can make hearing difficult, detract from the gaming experience, and prevent participants from fully engaging in esports.

When selecting an assistive listening system for esports, consider who will be using the technology. Do they prefer to borrow equipment or BYOD? Select a system they are likely to use.

Also consider the unique challenges of the space. The esports arena in the Digital Creative Lab at the University of Southern California (USC), for example, is enclosed, and there is a collaborative space adjacent to the arena. To ensure everyone in the collaborative space can experience what is happening inside the enclosed arena, USC selected an audio-over-Wi-Fi assistive listening system. Spectators can follow the action by streaming the audio from the gaming and the instructor in the esports arena. Gamers and spectators with hearing loss can also use the streamed audio for assistive listening.

Like any sporting event, watching the action unfold on a big display makes the experience more immersive and engaging for spectators. At the same time, it provides athletes a way to demonstrate their skills to fans and peers. Nothing handles this application better than a dvLED video wall.
