Advanced Systems Group Appoints Andy Wiswell as Production Technology Ambassador

Advanced Systems Group (ASG) named broadcast industry veteran Andy Wiswell as the company’s production technology ambassador. Known in the media and entertainment industry for his 40-plus year career with Sony Broadcast, Wiswell brings an invaluable combination of knowledge and connections to ASG.

Wiswell supports ASG’s expanding client base with high-profile entertainment, corporate, education, broadcast, and post facilities throughout the U.S. Given his extensive background at Sony, he’s well versed in hardware and software video production technology. His knowledge and connections beyond Sony are expansive. Wiswell will assist ASG in a wide range of tasks, including supporting personnel with sophisticated configurations. 

K-array USA Strengthens Touring and Production Division with Industry Veteran David Rees

K-array USA welcomed David Rees as business development manager for production and touring. In his new role, Rees is responsible for expanding K-array’s visibility within the touring and live event production industry. His focus will be on showcasing K-array's unique, efficient, and innovative audio solutions to vendors and artists, leveraging the company's cutting-edge technology in powerful touring systems and software applications.

Rees brings over 20 years of experience in the live event production industry to K-array USA, having held a dynamic range of previous roles in the live event sector from small clubs to large stadiums at some of the most respected organizations in the industry. Previously, he served as national director of facilities and venue operations for SaveLive, director of production for Hollywood Park (YouTube Theater/SoFi Stadium), and national director of production for Live Nation. In addition to his management experience, Rees is a seasoned live sound engineer with over 20 years of experience mixing for a variety of artists and events.

Korbyt Expands Senior Leadership Team

Korbyt expanded its leadership team with four VP and C-level appointments to usher in the company’s next phase of growth. Expanding the senior leadership team marks Korbyt’s most notable organizational development since the company received a strategic investment from Clearhaven Partners in July 2023.

As CFO of Korbyt, Stuart Mitchell calls on his deep experience working with technology and software companies to drive profitable growth and be a trusted partner to the wider leadership group. Mitchell is uniquely suited to his new role as CFO as an accredited member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland, with deep C-level experience at several successful B2B software companies.

Newly appointed VP of marketing Christel Billault leads the strategic direction and execution of Korbyt’s marketing initiatives. With more than two decades of experience in B2B SaaS marketing, Billault brings a wealth of expertise to establish Korbyt’s leadership and drive growth through innovative and integrated marketing strategies. As VP of engineering, Adam Griffis leads the engineering team responsible for developing and expanding the Korbyt Anywhere platform. He comes to Korbyt by way of CommentSold, where he served as VP of engineering. In his new role as VP of product management, Travis Kemp leads the strategic vision and execution of Korbyt’s product portfolio. With a deep passion for developing innovative solutions, Kemp is dedicated to driving the next generation of Korbyt’s offerings, ensuring they meet the evolving needs of customers and the market. 

Planar Bolsters New England Sales Team

Planar welcomed Bill Copley as a regional account manager for the company's New England sales team. With more than 20 years in the AV industry, Copley brings a wealth of integrator and manufacturer sales experience with display technologies and control systems. His breadth of understanding equips him with insights and skills that will directly aid him in working with dealers to grow Planar's footprint in the region. Copley will cover Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Upstate New York. 

Powersoft Bolsters Global Team with Five New Hires

Powersoft has expanded its global team with the appointment of two new business development managers and three new solution engineers. With over 20 years of industry experience, Jonathan Wu, newly appointed business development manager for China, possesses a deep understanding of the pro-audio market. He is charged with enhancing the user experience and product knowledge for Chinese clients, as well as continue to raise Powersoft’s brand awareness in China. In his new role, Wu will be focusing on nurturing relationships with potential clients, partners, and stakeholders.

Jinfu Chen, business development manager for the Southeast Asian market, will focus on Indonesia, Thailand, The Philippines, and Vietnam ensuring growth objectives by creating direct relationships with key integrators and consultants and utilizing regular meetings and training sessions within the distribution network. Chen has an extensive background in the industry, having previously worked with Yamaha Commercial Audio and Audio-Technica, as well as a freelance sound engineer.

As a new solution engineer for the Chinese market, Michael Wu's plan is to collaborate with Powersoft’s partner EZPro Intl order to promote the application of innovative products in the Chinese market and explore their potential within specific market segments. This includes training, promotion, and technical support. 

In the U.K., new solution engineer Tom Bland—who has been around the pro-AV world since he was born and started his first role in the  education and application support team at d&b audiotechnik GB after graduating university—will be helping the sales team by offering training, demos, and technical help, as well as being directly available to Powersoft’s users and specifiers to help them better understand Powersoft’s offerings and providing them with support on how to get the right tool for the job.

Joe Byrne, whose industry experience includes more than 30 years in AV integration, live production, and manufacturing, joins the Powersoft U.S. team as solution engineer. Byrne will focus on assessing the immediate needs of Powersoft’s U.S. team, including day-to-day activities, product training, customer education and overall technical support systems.

QuickLink Expands Its U.S. Presence

QuickLink appointed two high-level personnel specifically for the United States and Canadian markets, including Andrew Takacs, who has been hired as head of sales, and Donny Oropeza as pre-sales engineer and customer success engineer. In addition, QuickLink recently opened its new U.S. office in San Antonio, TX, furthering its strategic expansion and continuous commitment to offering exemplary sales, service, and support to its customers, throughout the United States and Canada.

Takacs brings over 20 years of sales and business development experience to QuickLink. In this new role, he will drive sales in the U.S. and Canada, broadening QuickLink’s reach throughout those regions. In his previous roles at NewTek and Vizrt, Takacs led the development and execution of business strategies for top revenue-producing resellers in the broadcast and post-production industries. His expertise in relationship and long sales cycle management, as well as new business growth, will be invaluable as he leads the QuickLink sales team in North America.

Oropeza works in tandem with Takacs to support the sales channel, provide necessary technical expertise, and actively work to close business. Bringing 25 years of experience from Vizrt/NewTek, Oropeza’s career has seen him rise from corporate ranks. His deep understanding of technical support, sales engineering, and territory management will be beneficial to QuickLink’s U.S./Canadian initiatives.

Severtson Screens has appointed Lincolnton, N.C.-based Phoenix Marketing Group to represent the company’s home theater, commercial, and Pro AV lines in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Southeast regions. Phoenix Marketing Group is a  Luxury Technology Manufacturer’s Representative, covering 20 states along the east coast with a team of uniquely handpicked individuals. PMG focused on lighting design, indoor and outdoor shading, smart automation, audio and video solutions, outdoor living spaces and acoustical treatments for residential, commercial, and industrial segments. 

Vision2 Marketing to Rep FOR-A in U.S. Market

As part of a more expansive push into the U.S. market, FOR-A partnered with Vision2 Marketing, a manufacturers’ rep for pro audio, video, lighting, and control. Vision2 will handle all lines of FOR-A video software and hardware from its growing line up of IP-based solutions to its popular video switchers, routing switchers, frame synchronizers, color correctors, signal processors, and video servers. V2 will support FOR-A in the southeastern, southern, and western U.S. states.

Palmer Digital Group Moves into Larger Office Space

Palmer Digital Group has moved into a new 2,500-square-foot office space to accommodate the company’s rapid business growth over its first five years. The new space was redesigned from the ground up as an extension of the existing facility, with PDG’s previous office space vacated and returned to Palmer Digital Group’s parent company, Industrial Enclosure Corporation (IEC), for other business functions related to its electronics enclosure manufacturing operation.

Palmer Digital Group (PDG) worked with outside architects and contractors to design and prepare the new workspace, which includes four offices, five cubical spaces, one large meeting room and a cafeteria. The space was previously a storage space for an outside company, and PDG brought in various teams to raise walls, add flooring and run electrical among other needs to support business operations. PDG has retained the existing workshop and warehouse space where its digital menu boards, kiosks and other indoor/outdoor structures are designed and built, adding a new laser machine and robot welder to accelerate the manufacturing process.

The new space will remain the headquarters to all business functions including sales, finance and manufacturing, with plenty of room to accommodate new employees as jobs are created. That includes new engineering and high-level customer service positions that PDG are actively seeking to fill.

Chief to Introduce Tempo Flat Panel In-Wall Mount System

Chief, a brand of Legrand | AV, will introduce the Tempo Flat Panel In-Wall Mount System at Booth C8600. This all-in-one system includes in-wall storage and flat panel mounts that can be purchased and installed to accommodate the stages of construction, from rough-in to AV commissioning.

With the new Tempo Flat Panel In-Wall Mount System, contractors can install in-wall boxes with stud tabs kit (FPIWMKIT1) during the rough-in construction phase. The wall mount kit (FPIWMKIT2) can be ordered separately and delivered after wall finishing is complete to add flanges, display mount, and small-device storage plates. An infinite number of horizontal mounting patterns are compatible with the system to accommodate extra-large and some ultrawide displays because in-wall back boxes can be set as far apart as needed to align the flat panel with the mount.

The system also offers an industry-exclusive feature: three types of knockouts per box. This provides greater flexibility for vertical and horizontal cabling between storage boxes, giving total control over power and data design. Storage boxes are designed to fit perfectly between studs. The San Diego Natural History Museum (often referred to as The Nat) will be celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2024. The Nat, located in Balboa Park, wanted to celebrate with an upgrade, looking for a motorized retractable projection screen that had to meet a multitude of demands for its Atrium, a main entry hall that is used as a gathering space for daytime visitors as well as after-hours events. Based on the parameters needed, Severtson Screens stepped in and provided exactly what was necessary.

“The museum had very specific requirements based on where the screen was to be positioned, how large it needed to be, and its strength based on its size,” explained Aaron White, Home Theater and Pro AV sales lead at Severtson Corp. “We broke down all of the facets and recommended our Cable Drop Electric Screen (CDT Series), and they were thrilled with the result.”

In the end, Severtson provided an Electric Cable Drop Screen with a viewing area 272.04x161.42 inches with a Cinema White all-white front.

Severtson’s Cable Drop Series is a collection of motorized electric screens that drop down on a thin steel cable. This system enables the screen to be lowered from very high ceilings in large venues and eliminates the need for a large black drop area. The Severtson Tab Tension system also ensures that the screen’s viewing area will be flat. The industrial look of the Cable Drop Series makes it the perfect choice for museums, performance halls, churches, and other small and large venues.

“We needed a screen that could drop down approximately ten feet to the appropriate viewing height while still remaining flat,” explained Michael Field, director of Experience Design at the San Diego Natural History Museum. “We also wanted as much of the mural that was painted behind the screen to be visible, which was going to be a challenge. Severtson’s Cable Drop Tab Tension Electric screen fit the bill perfectly. It was just what we desired, and its performance is outstanding. We couldn’t be more pleased with the outcome.

When the historic Totah Theater in Farmington, NM, underwent a complete renovation, local Pro AV integration firm CES+ turned to a 28x15.2-foot Severtson Giant Electric projection screen to improve the guest experience.

As part of the renovation, CES+ also installed a laser projection Barco Series 4 DOLBY IMS-3000 server with a CP950 sound processor and a 16-channel DMA16302 amplifier, and a JBL 7.1 passive audio system including speakers, surrounds, and subwoofers. The auditorium is also fully equipped with Dolby hearing-impaired devices while CES+ is also providing equipment and installation services for the theater.

Opened in 1949 and used as a movie theatre until 1982, the Totah Theater thereafter was used as a performance theater. In 2006, the Totah Theater was converted into a multiuse performance hall. In 2020, San Juan County acquired, and in partnership with the City of Farmington renovated the facility to create a “Center of Film” for the region. The facility will now be used for film screenings and live entertainment events and will serve as the base of operations for Totah Studios, a joint venture between the San Juan County and the City of Farmington, who took control of the building last year. As deemed of historical significance to the city, the structure is also being preserved, even as the AV technologies are being updated.

“The Totah Theater holds many fond memories for the community of nights at the movies with family and is a wonderful centerpiece to the newly revitalized downtown district, ‘The Heart of Farmington’,” said Warren Unsicker, director of economic development for the City of Farmington.

From residential installations to the U.S.S. Stargazer set on Star Trek: Picard, projection screens have a variety of use cases. Whether it is a live event, immersive attraction, or home theater, having the right screen can enhance the experience for the viewer.

Projectors bring to life the vivid colors and imagery of content creators, but all can be lost without the screen that best suits the content. With considerations like the surface of the screen, projector size, or ambient light capabilities, it is imperative to make the “right” choice the first time.

Touching the Surface

Simply put, projection environments can vary widely. Aaron White, home theater and Pro AV sales lead at Severtson Screens, offered up a few questions that must be answered when considering the right screen for each installation.

“There are a lot of factors to consider,” he said. “Are there speakers behind the screen, so that you need an acoustically transparent material?  What type of projector are you using: UST or standard front projection? Is there a lot of ambient light in the room or is it completely blacked out?”

Wendy Cox, director of product management at Da-Lite, a brand of Legrand|AV, said addressing these concerns is critical for any installation. “You are selecting a resolution technology from the projector and content,” she added. “So, if you don’t select the screen surface that matches the resolution and technology needs, you’re really missing out on optimizing the investment. It’s also a major part of the end user’s experience, because if you don’t pair the right screen surface and projector for the environment, it may result in a less-than-optimal image.”

"It can make or break the image quality, which anyone who has walked into a sports bar or house of worship with a projection screen may have experienced,” noted Ryan Gustafson, CEO of Screen Innovations (SI). “Ambient light rejecting [ALR] technologies, such as Screen Innovations’ Black Diamond and Slate screen optics, were developed to provide a viable option for environments plagued with ambient light.”

Light Management

As Gustafson explained, there are plenty of variables to consider when selecting a screen. Throw distance, viewing area, and projector mounting are all part of the equation. However, one key consideration that seems to be at the forefront is how well it rejects ambient light.

“Black Diamond is Screen Innovations’ most popular ambient light rejecting screen material, followed by Slate,” he added. “SI’s Unity screen material renders the highest color accuracy when used in dark environments. All of these options, with the exception of Black Diamond, are available with acoustic transparency.”

“Ambient light, natural or artificial, can come from any source in a room,” said Cox. ”In two-piece projection, the only light you want hitting the screen is from the projector. Screen surfaces featuring ambient light rejection properties can separate light in the environment from projected light. Ambient light that falls on a standard projection screen will compete with light from the projector and wash out image contrast, color saturation, and dynamic range, affecting the viewing experience.”

“Most screen surfaces don't reject ambient light as much as they do to compensate for it,” added White. “Many materials add back contrast that ambient light has lost.  Other screen materials provide for better reflection of the primary light source [i.e., projector] rather than indirect light sources coming from other angles. A true ALR material generally has some type of layering or reflectors that redirect the unwanted light sources away from the screen while directing the projectors image back to the audience.”

Keeping those screens flat is also of utter importance. As White said, one of the benefits of a fixed-frame installation is it remains static and is not susceptible to creases.

For the smallest creases, bumps, or folds, you’d be surprised at some of the easiest tricks of the trade. “Using a blow dryer on the crease is an industry trick that solves a lot of shipping or installation mishaps,” Gustafson said.   

Size Matters

Projection screens are used in many environments. A home theater, for example, will require drastically different dimensions than a commercial installation. “The general rule of thumb for 16:9 or 10:10 formats, in a commercial setting, is to figure the depth of room divided by two to achieve the ideal screen diagonal,” explained Cox.

“Screen size often has some personal preference and bias associated with it,” admitted White. “However, it can also be limited by the room size and projector specs; if the projector is placed a long distance from the screen, it may lose a lot of its light by not being bright enough or also be able to zoom to the desired size. Another major determining factor is seating distance. A rule of thumb is your seating distance should be about three times your screen's viewing height.”

Which is more advantageous for your installation, fixed or motorized screens? “Fixed screens are more stable, delivering a more accurate installation of dimension and aspect ratio than motorized screens,” Gustafson offered. “Motorized screens are more flexible and prone to expand and contract in a 120-degree truck or attic. Although motorized screens are natively flat, they can move with air movement throughout the room. Still, they are a great choice where preserving the architectural and decorative integrity of a room is important or when a room serves multiple purposes.”

Luckily, finding the right screen size is relatively easy. Most companies offer online tools to get started, such as Da-Lite’s Screen Surface Selection Calculator and Screen Designer Tool and SI's Screen Material Wizard.

While there are many considerations, there are also a number of projection screens available. Here are some current offerings from several manufacturers.

Da-Lite Tensioned Advantage with SightLine

Da-Lite’s new cable drop feature, SightLine, available with the Tensioned Advantage electric screen, gives the impression of a floating screen. Available in sizes up to 177-inch diagonal (16:9) or 182-inch diagonal (16:10), it is a ceiling recessed electric screen designed with ceiling trim in place. This conceals the rough opening and eliminates the need to complete additional trim work once the screen is installed. Its two-stage installation option allows the screen case to be installed during the rough-in construction stage and the screen surface assembly during the finishing stage. Sliding installation brackets allow mounting flexibility for easy attachment of the screen housing to the structure above the drop ceiling.

Draper TecVision Series

Draper offers 11 TecVision formulations to deal with any projection requirements, including five ALR formulations. Each TecVision surface is designed for uniform performance across the image and from screen to screen. Draper tests each formulation periodically to make sure it still performs within specs. This attention to detail allowed Draper to attain Imaging Science Foundation (ISF) certification for color accuracy for every TecVision formulation. Draper's optically seamless technology makes seams invisible on very large installations. TecVision surfaces are available with electric and rechargeable battery screens like the Acumen series, as well as fixed screens like the Profile+. 

Elite ProAV Presenter Pro Riser CineGrey 4D

This portable, electric floor-rising projection screen with Ceiling Light Rejecting technology is designed for ambient light room environments. Its tab-tension design maintains a flat and taut front projection surface to provide a ripple-free image suitable for standard long-throw projectors. It’s ALR characteristics allow the Presenter Pro to be used in rooms with ambient light in lecture halls, boardrooms, training facilities, and other environments where lighting cannot be controlled. Using “scissor-backed” cross risers, the CineGrey 4D material rises and lowers easily.

 EPV Twilight Series

The new Twilight Series comes in a variety of sizes in Electric, Manual, and Tension Twin models. All three models are dedicated to outdoor spaces for nighttime use. The screen material is supported by a tab-tension system to provide a flat and taut projection surface for use with ultra, short, and standard throw projectors. Its wide viewing angle accommodates small gatherings or large-venue events.

Screen Innovations Black Diamond

In 2008, Screen Innovations designed Black Diamond to solve the problem of washed-out projection screens in rooms with light. Black Diamond is capable of rejecting light on both the horizontal and vertical axis, so lighting from fixtures above and windows on the side is simultaneously rejected. The optics in Black Diamond result in an immersive dark room experience without the need for blacking out adjacent walls.

Severtson Screens Impression Series

Severtson’s Impression Series fixed frames with SAT-4K screen material are designed for specialized applications where a permanent projection screen is desired. Made in the United States, the SAT-4K replicates the cinema experience in home and commercial settings.
