Everyone loves a new dvLED display or the latest classroom technology that enhances the learning experience. But what about the support systems for these shiny toys and the latest innovations? After all, a dvLED display isn’t much without something holding it in place.

Carts and mounts may not be glamorous, but they are imperative in large-scale rollouts or assembling systems in the boardroom. We caught up with some industry experts to discuss the latest innovations and features, as well as tips for your next installation.

Racking Up Innovation

Most manufacturers agree that innovation stems from understanding the needs of both the integrator and end user. "We recognize the challenges of fitting more system devices behind large displays and the need for those devices to be easily accessible if a problem arises," said Beth Peterson, director, product management, Chief, a Legrand | AV brand. "Innovation can be as simple as integrated cable management or eliminating time-consuming steps, such as site surveys."

Take the Chief Velocity outdoor triple pedestal system, for example. This modular outdoor digital signage pedestal mount, which supports Samsung and LG 55-inch outdoor displays, was designed for drive-thru menu boards and wayfinding signage. Its modular design allows for single, double, or triple displays and easily accommodates future expansion. It was crafted for easy installation and its open back allows easy access for maintenance.

One of the common trends in any Pro AV technology is ease of use, and that holds true with recent innovations in racks and mounts as well. According to Joe Wentworth, senior product manager, Peerless-AV, these AV accessories are becoming sleeker, slimmer, and more modular to ensure an aesthetically pleasing finish and a safer, more efficient installation. "Features such as integrated cable management and power outlets, configurable X/Y/Z alignment, tool-less hanging, and easily adjustable builds are gaining popularity, opening the possibilities for more complicated configurations and future adaptability," he added.

Another innovation gaining momentum is the use of Unistrut-based mounting systems. "This is especially true for video walls and menu boards," explained William Bear, VP of sales and marketing, Crimson AV. "Integrators and general contractors already know and use Unistrut, so being able to drop in mounting hardware that’s designed to work with those components is a big win. It shortens install time, reduces the learning curve, and creates a more scalable, repeatable solution—something that’s especially valuable in multi-location rollouts."

Let the Good Times Roll

Not all displays are permanent installations and often need to be ready to roll from room to room. When evaluating AV carts—whether for corporate, education, healthcare, or rental applications—Bear said safety, mobility, and flexibility are key considerations. This includes looking into UL weight rating and tip testing to ensure the cart can safely support the specified load, plus height adjustability, integrated cable management, a wide wheelbase for added stability, and smooth rolling, locking casters to simplify mobility.

Crimson AV has designed the M90XL heavy-duty mobile cart as a solution to meet these requirements. Crafted for displays ranging from 50-98 inches, the M90XL is an all-in-one mobile cart, built for durability, performance, and aesthetics. Other features to look for include built-in organization tools like power outlets and cable management, as well as a slim build and wide-set wheels.

"At Chief, we prioritize the quality and safety of our products, ensuring they meet UL tip standards and are built to last," Peterson added. "We've all seen the school district buy closeout-priced carts from Amazon, only to have to replace them the next year because the casters have buckled and they aren’t holding up to heavy use. Considering storage is essential, such as whether it offers a shelf or storage bin for items that need to stay with the system when it moves from one classroom to another."

For example, the Peerless-AV SmartMount flat panel carts combine durable support with adaptable setup. These carts are designed with all the requirements of a mobile display setup in mind, making them suitable for diverse professional and educational environments, which earned them HETMA approval. The tubular design ensures a minimalistic and portable setup by concealing all cables internally. Plus, the rear ABS molded cover maintains a clutter-free appearance and offers convenient storage for cables, media players, or mini PCs.

Wall Mounts: Best Practices

Getting a wall mount placed correctly and securely the first time is imperative to avoid delays and additional costs, especially in large-scale rollouts. Unfortunately, that is not always the case, as there are mistakes aplenty in mount installation. According to Wentworth, common mistakes he has seen are overloading the mount, insufficient anchoring, limited rear access for serviceability, and poor cable organization. All these pose safety hazards and damages to displays and aesthetics.

Peterson said a common mistake has been not planning for the inevitable servicing a room system will require. "Our Chief pullout extension accessory can attach to several of our standard wall mounts," she added. "It allows one technician to troubleshoot instead of needing two to remove a large display from a wall to access behind it."

Bear recommends a five-step process to streamline installation. Each step carefully prepares to avoid the mistakes made, including requesting bulk shipping for large projects, standardizing mounting and height templates, checking for stud spacing, pre-assembling whenever possible, and using leveling features and micro-adjustments.

It's important not to overlook the pre-installation process. As Wentworth noted, gathering accurate measurements and weight calculations can avoid those alignment errors and ensure the mount can safely support the display.

Placement is a key decision. "It’s important to consider easy access for serviceability or future replacements," Wentworth said. "Features like open‑back wall plates and internal wire channels allow for easy cable routing and future maintenance without having to remove the entire system."

To ensure everything is properly installed, mounts are designed with features critical in avoiding these installation pitfalls. "Ensuring compatibility is a top priority in the buying process," Peterson said. "We provide the Mountfinder tool, which features hundreds of thousands of models researched over the past 25 years, along with their specifications matched to our range of mounts. Eliminating guesswork in compatibility allows us to continually support our AV integration partners."

Wentworth added that built-in adaptability tools, as well as simple installation tools, aid in making future adjustments more efficient. These include quick-connect and release clamps, micro-tilt adjustability, and alignment tools. Additionally, he added, tools like built-in cable management and universal display size and weight support also allow for easier management for safe, long-term use.

"I often hear from customers that the secret to a stress-free mount installation is to stick with the mount you know well," Peterson said. "When designing our mounts, we focus on quick installation. The key is selecting mounts with post-installation leveling and micro adjustments. These features enable a ‘close enough’ alignment initially, followed by quick fine-tuning at the end."

Racks and mounts are a small but critical part of any pro AV installation.

“Choosing the right rack or cabinet size for a project is important,” said Mike McCormick, senior regional sales manager at AtlasIED. “Not only is it time-consuming to try to fit equipment in a rack that is undersized for a job, but cable pathways may become overcrowded and overheating could occur. Integrators should choose racks that are large enough to provide appropriate ventilation for the type and amount of gear, as well as adequate room for organized cable structure.”

In addition to saving time, choosing the appropriate mount or rack can save money. “Ease of specification, ordering, and installation are important factors when choosing a high-quality mount because time is money for installers,” said Tony Caruso, product manager, Chief. “The right online tools, resources, and easy-to-find product information are essential whether specifying a wall mount, monitor arm mount, cart, or video wall installation.”

The What: B-Tech AV Mounts is issuing its new and improved BT8312 slim-line, soft open video wall mount with full serviceability. Drawing on nearly 10 years of experience designing video wall mounts, B-Tech’s new BT8312 combines the best parts of the original mount (launched in 2017) and another key product from its lineup, the BT8310, released in 2012.

The Bottom Line: Premier Mounts says the lightweight design of the LG-LSA makes it easy to transport and hold up when securing to the wall, allowing installers to make crucial on-site adjustments during the installation process. The LG-LSA Usually ships in 48 hours or less from the company's headquarters in Corona, CA.

The What: tvONE has announced the forthcoming arrival of the ONErack Spider, a universal multi-voltage DC power solution and the latest addition to the company’s ONErack universal rack mounting system.

The What Else: The ONErack Spider optimizes any installation by eliminating unreliable DC wall warts and other power clutter from the rack design, according to tvONE. At the same time, it also ensures the provision of reliable power for a choice of up to seven different voltage options: 5V, 7.5V, 9V, 12V, 13.5V, 18V, and 24V.

The What: B-Tech AV Mounts has released a mount for the Mersive Solstice Pod. Users wishing to mount the pod will now be able to use the BT7886 from B-Tech—an official mounting partner to Mersive—to secure the device in any configuration that suits their application.

The What Else: Designed by B-Tech’s in-house product design team, the BT7886 Mersive Solstice Pod Mounting Cradle allows the pod to be mounted in a variety of different configurations according to the user’s needs—directly to a wall or underside of a desk, to a compatible B-Tech accessory collar for pole mounting, or to the back of a screen when used in conjunction with an existing screen mount.

The What: Chief is launching the Koncīs Series of feature-rich monitor arms with  what the company calls "budget-friendly price points."

The What: Koncīs Dynamic Monitor Arms provide a flexible workspace solution designed to meet the needs of commercial or home offices. The series is offered in single and dual monitor arm configurations with silver and black finishes to match a variety of environments. 

Designed for sleek aesthetics and functionality, Koncīs monitor arms feature premium gas springs for smooth dynamic height adjustment. Monitors can be easily tilted with the company's patented Centris Extreme Tilt with +65° to -10° of fingertip tilt adjustment. Koncīs arms also feature 180° arm rotation stop, which protects walls and furniture panels from over-rotation. 

The Bottom Line: Chief says Koncīs monitor arms are easy to install and ship pre-assembled with clamp and grommet mounting methods. The 2 to 15 lb. weight capacity range of Koncīs is compatible with most monitors up to 32 inches. Built for durability and safety, Koncīs mounts are tested to meet or exceed ANSI/BIFMA X5.5 Desk and Table Product standards. 

The What: QSC is shipping the AD-S5T, a 5.25-inch two-way loudspeaker system designed for a wide variety of foreground and background sound reinforcement applications.

The What Else: By utilizing native Q-SYS network amplifiers, including CX-Q Series, or standalone QSC DSP processing amplifiers, integrators can take advantage of Intrinsic Correction, a proprietary voicing algorithm for QSC loudspeakers, which helps to further reduce the setup time and tuning process.

To ease installation, the AD-S5T includes the X-Mount system, which enables the loudspeaker to be aimed and installed at a variety of precise, repeatable angles without slipping over time. The Bottom Line: The AcousticDesign Series includes a wide variety of sizes and enclosure types (surface-mount, pendant-mount, ceiling-mount, columnar, and SUB/SAT) and provides consistent sonic characteristics across the entire line, allowing the ability to mix and match enclosures in a single installation.

The What: Premier Mounts has launched two new mounting solutions that support the largest LCD commercial display sizes. The LFC line from Premier Mounts is designed to take large-sized interactive and 4k displays from room to room, while the LMVLF is an adaptation to one of the company's legacy products, the scissor press-and-release mount known as the LMV. 

The What Else: The LFC Heavy Duty Mobile Cart is designed to hold display over 80-inches in size, and has a 300 lb. weight capacity. Manual height adjustment allows for the display to be set at intended viewing height while a mobile nesting base allows for easy storage.

AVIXA has released a new standard, Rack Design for Audiovisual (AV) Systems (F502.02:2020), which outlines the requirements for audiovisual rack planning, design, accommodation, and equipment layout. This standard joins the Rack Building for Audiovisual Systems standard to provide formalized guidelines for efficient design, build, and integration of racks in AV systems.

This new standard covers the fundamental processes and decisions necessary for designing equipment into a reliable AV equipment rack, from rack selection, thermal management, power system design, to earthing (grounding) and bonding requirements. It also covers the design input information that should be available to achieve an agreed-upon outcome prior to designing the rack, including system design documentation, rack location/environment, entry/connection method for site cabling, and more.

According to the standard task group's co-moderators, Jay Franetovich, CTS, product manager, Legrand, and Nick Pidgeon, CTS, director, Visualization Ltd., serviceability is one of many key benefits of the Rack Design Standard.

"This standard ensures the system you're designing is well built. It considers all aspects of the design—including cable management, thermal management, and power—to ensure a reliable system," said Franetovich. "Additionally, our customer base expects standardization, particularly when there are people from other industries doing multiple aspects of a job. Often, the person who builds the rack is not the same person who services it. A rack designed and built to both AVIXA's Rack Design and Rack Building Standards provides assurance, consistency, and familiarity to the person servicing the rack."

"For me, it comes down to the efficiency of the build and the future serviceability," added Pidgeon. "Thermal management and serviceability go hand in hand. If the thermal management is poorly addressed, then the system's longevity will be compromised. And if there is overcapacity—too much equipment within the rack—it'll be hard to get to the equipment to service it."

The What: Lowell Manufacturing Company has introduced a line of rackmount shelves with an intricate hole and slot pattern in the base that accommodates a variety of device mounting patterns—enabling small devices to be mounted securely, while contributing to enhanced ventilation. 

The What Else: The 16 gauge steel shelves with black finish also have side slots for cable management. Measuring 19 in. x 10 in. x 1U or 2U, USM Series shelves have a load capacity of 25 lbs. and are available individually or in multi-pack cartons.

The Bottom Line: The USM Series shelves are ideally suited to standalone sequencers, remote power control modules, switching gear, and similar devices. 

Premier Mounts has expanded its West Coast warehouse and operations in Corona, CA.

The current 50,000 square foot facility, which was designed with future expansion in mind, will see increased growth within the Logistics and Fabrications teams. The logistics team had previously used just 2,000 square feet and is now using 20,000 square feet.

“By increasing our logistics capacity, we have the opportunity to reduce shipping lead-times, and improve our reaction time to ‘late-day’ critical orders,” said Brent Henderson, director of supply chain for Premier Mounts. “This also ensures critical projects during the COVID-19 crisis can still ship even if our warehouses in Las Vegas or Buffalo are affected in the future due to the virus."

Premier Mounts also has added a new Amada 1253NT Press Brake to its manufacturing line to meet the incoming demand from dealers, distributors, and installers. According to the company, having another press brake allows for engineering and manufacturing to increase output of products while cutting down on critical lead times to better meet project deadlines.

The What: Legrand | AV has introduced new On-Q enhanced plastic structured wiring media enclosures for wired and wireless low-voltage systems. Now made in the USA, the plastic enclosures feature a new reversible hinged door with tool-less installation, a free integrated trim ring, added structural rigidity, and other design enhancements that help residential installers save valuable time and money while providing a clean, centralized location for a facility’s wired and wireless services.

The What Else: The On-Q enclosures come in three sizes—20, 30, and 42 inches—and can be purchased as a kit, separately, or in five-packs. Optional accessories include a universal mounting plate, fiber management spools, cable management clips, rubber grommets for knockouts, and keyed locks.

Besides an included trim ring for concealing imperfections in drywall, the new On-Q enclosures have a new hinge design that allows the door to snap easily and quickly into and out of the trim ring for faster installation without tools. Moreover, the hinge is reversible, so the door can swing left or right within a 180-degree range to maximize installation space. The door also includes new locking capabilities, with the option to install a lock and key to keep components safe before and after commissioning. The hinged door and trim add 1.2 inches of extra enclosure depth for compatibility with a greater number of third-party devices, such as service providers’ modems, Wi-Fi routers, and uninterruptible power supplies.

Previous enclosure models came with just the door; the trim ring was an optional accessory. Our new full-enclosure models now come with an integrated trim ring and hinged door at the same price as before. It’s the equivalent of On-Q providing a trim ring with every door for free.”

The Bottom Line: The enclosures are made from UL-rated ABS plastic, so installers can secure wireless devices such as wireless routers, access points, or service provider equipment in the cabinet without degrading network performance. The various-sized top and bottom knockouts allow for simple on-site installation and management of cables running to the enclosure. They include screwdriver holes for easy removal.

The What: Chief has expanded its TiLED LED Video Wall Mounting System to include the Samsung IFH Series, Absen Acclaim Series (including Acclaim Plus and Acclaim Pro), Unilumin UpanelS,  Barco XT Series, LG LAS Fine-pitch, and Leyard TVF Series.

The What Else: Chief’s latest design for digital signage solutions, the TiLED Series, is a modular, LED mounting system to support creative video wall configurations. The system can include any of three mounts that support LED displays and connect together to form a seamless video wall. Engineers created the TiLED system to be easy to specify, easy to order, and easy to install.

The Bottom Line: Chief’s TiLED Series maintains a low profile to enhance the sleek aesthetics of LED displays. The total depth, including display, ranges from 3.48-4.85-inches, depending on the amount of plumb adjustment needed.

The What: QSC is expanding its AcousticDesign Series of column surface-mount loudspeakers, adding the four-driver AD-S402T. The 7.5-pound loudspeaker, which offers an effective frequency range of 110 Hz to 20 kHz, consists of four weather-treaded 2.5-inch transducers and is capable of 70V/100V or 8 ohm bypass loads. The S402T is optimized for delivering high quality sound performance within challenging acoustic environments.

The What Else: With a unique pan/tilt mounting system, the column surface-mount loudspeakers offer multiple positioning locations, allowing the loudspeaker to remain close to the wall while delivering up to -20° downward tilt. The mounting system’s ease of use reduces the amount of live load time and allows for a more time-efficient installation.

Each of the three AD Series column loudspeakers in this line (including the existing 8-driver and 16-driver models) feature Progressive Taper Topology (PTT), which provides a virtual curve for more precise directivity control, allowing integrators to achieve better audio performance for their customer.

The Bottom Line: The AcousticDesign Series loudspeakers offer a wide variety of sizes and enclosure types including SUB/SAT, surface-mount, pendant-mount, and ceiling-mount. All models in this broad portfolio provide consistent, balanced sonic characteristics, and share the same superior aesthetics enabling users to mix and match from wide variety of enclosure types.
