“With the resurgence of tours increasing daily, we knew it was time to expand our rack case offerings,” explained Rob McCoy, vice president of product management. “Pro audio professionals rely on a quality product at a great price. Our partners started to ask for larger sizes, so the 20U was inevitable.”
 
The G-Tour Series offers road-ready cases for a variety of instruments and pro-audio equipment, including mixers, DJ controllers, keyboards, guitars and effects, tour furniture, general utility, and much more.

tvONE’s ONErack universal powered mounting system was recently installed at America’s United Launch Alliance sites, which provide rocket launch services for NASA spacecraft.

One of the most recent high-profile take-offs was NASA’s Perseverance mission to Mars on United Launch Alliance’s Atlas V rocket. This event attracted international attention, especially as the Perseverance rover landed safely on the Red Planet in February this year to hunt for microbial life.

At Perseverance’s launch in July 2020, United Launch Alliance’s two sites at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida and California's Vandenberg Space Force Base had more than 30 of tvONE’s ONErack units installed and in play. Indeed, all of ULA’s recent launches for NASA have used ONErack as part of its intricate, demanding and future-looking technology systems and will continue to do so.

“At the launch site, ULA has a large number of cameras—about 60—to monitor every angle before, during and after the rocket blasts off,” said Mark Armon, tvONE’s global product manager. “This results in a lot of data and power consumption—as each feed is a circuit—which is when ONErack comes into play in the ULA control rooms. ONErack is unique in the marketplace as it enables users to mount randomly sized, externally powered devices from any manufacturer into slide-in modules that can be installed quickly and cleanly and serviced easily. This means that if anything goes wrong with one device, that chassis can be removed in isolation and fixed.

“All mounted devices can also be efficiently cooled by ONErack directly, which is very useful when you’re employing a large amount of technology for something like a rocket launch.”

Because ONErack allows third-party devices to be simply installed within its chassis, ULA is free to combine a host of technology inside it, powered and cooled as required.

“ONErack tremendously helps us organize our rack full of IP camera components,” says Mark Tillman of the United Launch Alliance. “These components were originally installed at each camera location out in the hot and humid environment. Using a different design concept, the tvONE chassis allowed us to move all the equipment into air-conditioned communications rooms. With the sliding trays, we also have easy access to each of our cameras’ components. If I used rack shelves, it would not only take up more space, but we would not have been able to have the components as densely packaged. We are using this model for many of our systems, and I’m about to order a few more tvONE chassis.”

The ULA team opted for the 6RU version of ONErack, which can hold up to 16 modules with up to two voltage selectors each. When using the ONErack power supply, each voltage selector can provide selectable power at 5V, 7.5V, 9V, 12V, 13.5V, 18V, and 24V up to 35 watts.

Racks and mounts are a small but critical part of any pro AV installation.

“Choosing the right rack or cabinet size for a project is important,” said Mike McCormick, senior regional sales manager at AtlasIED. “Not only is it time-consuming to try to fit equipment in a rack that is undersized for a job, but cable pathways may become overcrowded and overheating could occur. Integrators should choose racks that are large enough to provide appropriate ventilation for the type and amount of gear, as well as adequate room for organized cable structure.”

In addition to saving time, choosing the appropriate mount or rack can save money. “Ease of specification, ordering, and installation are important factors when choosing a high-quality mount because time is money for installers,” said Tony Caruso, product manager, Chief. “The right online tools, resources, and easy-to-find product information are essential whether specifying a wall mount, monitor arm mount, cart, or video wall installation.”

“It’s essential to think about long-term serviceability when selecting a mount, too—ensuring that the display, behind-display storage and small AV components can be quickly accessed for maintenance or upgrades,” Caruso added.

Peerless-AV director of business development Megan Zeller advises integrators to factor the mount into the equation from the beginning. “Even the most thought-out installations come with an array of last-minute complications,” she said. “Having a reliable mount—from a reliable manufacturer—is so crucial for integrators to ensure they avoid any installation or future issues that will create an increase in cost. Installers should use qualified wall mounts that allow for an easy and quick installation process and can handle any last-minute on-site challenges, like uneven wall structures. [This] will end up saving them, as well as the customer, time and money.”

Ensuring integration firms are working with a reliable manufacturer is of the utmost importance, according to Rob Brunett, SnapAV’s product manager for infrastructure products. “When determining which rack or mount to buy, look for manufacturers who confidently stand behind their products with lifetime warranties and generous return policies,” he advised.

Racks and Mounts That Improve Installation Efficiency • Whether it’s by modularity, surge protection, digital tools, or custom configurations, integrators’ preferred methods of service for these critical building blocks of every installation continue to expand to modern needs. Here’s a rundown of some of the latest offerings.

The What: B-Tech AV Mounts is issuing its new and improved BT8312 slim-line, soft open video wall mount with full serviceability. Drawing on nearly 10 years of experience designing video wall mounts, B-Tech’s new BT8312 combines the best parts of the original mount (launched in 2017) and another key product from its lineup, the BT8310, released in 2012.

The What Else: The BT8312’s slimline design and “pop-out” function is ideally suited for close to the wall and recessed applications, where full service access is required for installation and maintenance. Enhancing the pop-out function is a patent pending soft open feature. Following a light push, this feature ensures a controlled and unassisted outward movement of the mount, which protects display bezels during servicing by staying in perfect alignment throughout the opening and closing process.

Another key feature of the BT8312 is the precision alignment. The BT8312 is designed with eight points of micro-adjustment for accurate screen alignment including adjustability at each corner. B-Tech has incorporated and upgraded the same system used with the BT8310, namely lateral micro-adjustment for even greater precision. These adjustments are fully tool-less and can be adjusted comfortably by hand using the ergonomically designed knobs.

The Bottom Line: In contrast to mounting solutions requiring a separate product for mounting in landscape or portrait configuration, the BT8312 can mount displays in either orientation. Other core B-Tech features that integrators and installers have come to expect to speed up the installation process include keyhole mounting and re-usable display specific wall plate spacer kits that allow for easy building out of video wall configurations.

Premier Mounts has revealed a distinct new look that will align the brand with the identity of parent company Gamber-Johnson.

The makeover follows the announcement of the new acquisition by Gamber-Johnson, a supplier of rugged mounting systems for fleet and public safety vehicles, forklifts, semi-trucks, and other mobility applications. The Premier Mounts rebrand will echo Gamber-Johnson’s current blue color to reflect the company’s dedication to producing products that are rugged, reliable, and responsive.

“We at Gamber-Johnson are eager to evolve together with Premier to raise the bar and continue to create the high-quality products that our clients have come to expect,” said Brian Wagner, president, and CEO of Gamber-Johnson.

The What: Lowell’s DMR-19 is an adjustable mount for flat-panel displays and LCD monitors up to 23.9 inches.

The What Else: The DMR-19 is designed to be ideal for use with two- or four-post racks in control rooms or AV settings. While Lowell had previously developed display mounts to accommodate custom requests, the new mount will be offered as a standard model in its Rackware line of rack accessories.  

The DMR-19 (19 in. x 5 in. x 4U) features a sturdy steel center plate that can be mounted flush or recessed (up to about 4 inches) on the steel mounting ears. Vertical adjustment slots are sized to fit a 75mm or 100mm VESA mounting hole pattern, while multiple access points allow for easy access to a variety of input/output locations.

The Bottom Line: The DMR-19, which features a smooth black powder epoxy finish, is scheduled to begin shipping in May 2021.  

The What: Premier Mounts has added to its Convergent line of products with a dvLeD mount for the LG LSAA and LSAB Series.

The What Else: Convergent is Premier Mounts’ line of narrow pixel pitch direct view LED mounts engineered for x-y-z plane alignment and unlimited modular scalability. 

“The new LG offerings for Convergent will complement our current line of products, always with the goal of making both integrators’ and customers’ lives easier,” said Elijah Mounts, Premier Mounts digital marketing coordinator. “We’ve made the installation of LEDs safer, faster, and more cost-efficient than any other mount on the market."

The Bottom Line: Premier Mounts says the lightweight design of the LG-LSA makes it easy to transport and hold up when securing to the wall, allowing installers to make crucial on-site adjustments during the installation process. The LG-LSA Usually ships in 48 hours or less from the company's headquarters in Corona, CA.

The What: tvONE has announced the forthcoming arrival of the ONErack Spider, a universal multi-voltage DC power solution and the latest addition to the company’s ONErack universal rack mounting system.

The What Else: The ONErack Spider optimizes any installation by eliminating unreliable DC wall warts and other power clutter from the rack design, according to tvONE. At the same time, it also ensures the provision of reliable power for a choice of up to seven different voltage options: 5V, 7.5V, 9V, 12V, 13.5V, 18V, and 24V.

The Bottom Line: Available in a 1RU half-rack version (7-module capacity) or rear strip version (23-module capacity), the ONErack spider can be installed at the back or side of the rack to provide the ultimate installation flexibility.

We’re still in the wild west days of dvLED, with major manufacturers competing for market share in the field of digital signage. Though adoption of the technology dipped in 2020 due to tightened budgets in response to the pandemic, expectations are favorable for an increase in 2021. 

As a newer, expensive technology, integrators may hesitate to jump in. Each display manufacturer, after all, uses different mounting patterns, and delicate panels need to be precisely aligned without forcing them and causing damage.

But for those wanting to get ahead of the trend, dvLED can be a powerful new part of their services. When asked to rate their satisfaction level with a finished dvLED wall, respondents gave it a 9 out of 10. We’re all in the business of satisfied customers, so it just makes sense.

The What: B-Tech AV Mounts has released a mount for the Mersive Solstice Pod. Users wishing to mount the pod will now be able to use the BT7886 from B-Tech—an official mounting partner to Mersive—to secure the device in any configuration that suits their application.

The What Else: Designed by B-Tech’s in-house product design team, the BT7886 Mersive Solstice Pod Mounting Cradle allows the pod to be mounted in a variety of different configurations according to the user’s needs—directly to a wall or underside of a desk, to a compatible B-Tech accessory collar for pole mounting, or to the back of a screen when used in conjunction with an existing screen mount.

The Bottom Line: With features that include an open design to help keep the mounted pod cool when in use, security screws, and an integrated slot for a Kensington lock (lock not included) to help prevent unauthorized removal of the device, B-Tech says the BT7886 is a convenient, practical, and easy to install solution.

Gamber-Johnson—supplier of rugged mounting systems for fleet vehicles, public safety vehicles, forklifts, semi-trucks, and other mobility applications—has finalized an agreement to acquire Premier Mounts.

“We are looking forward to joining forces with Premier Mounts,” said Brian Wagner, president, and CEO of Gamber-Johnson. “Gamber is a market leader in mounting technology in mobile environments where Premier is a leader in mounting displays in static environments. The combination of these two market leaders will genuinely create results greater than the sum of its parts.” 

Premier Mounts was founded 45 years ago by current CEO Len Dozier who is stepping down with the acquisition. 

“Len is highly respected in this industry, and we will miss his experience and knowledge on a day-to-day basis,” said Curtis Rose, director of marketing at Premier Mounts. “But he is leaving a lasting legacy of professionalism, product design, and leading by example through his capacity to continually give back to the community. We are so grateful for that."

Premier Mounts will become a Gamber-Johnson brand with its main office functions remaining in Southern California. Manufacturing, warehousing, and corporate oversight will occur at Gamber-Johnson’s newly renovated manufacturing space in Wisconsin.

The What: Premier Mounts has launched two new mounting solutions that support the largest LCD commercial display sizes. The LFC line from Premier Mounts is designed to take large-sized interactive and 4k displays from room to room, while the LMVLF is an adaptation to one of the company's legacy products, the scissor press-and-release mount known as the LMV.

In every business there is an essential need for getting large displays added to fit their strategies and meet their objectives. No matter what vertical you may be in, the need to accurately display information for your staff or clients is an essential part of the digital experience that people crave. With smartphones being such a part of our lifestyle, having displays gives people the gratification of getting information through digital media. 

Conveying the best content requires having a large canvas available to you. The larger canvas brings higher and clearer resolutions to showcase content to its highest quality. While 8k content is rare to find and difficult to produce, 4k is the best realistic option for anyone to create. Thus, comes the need for ultra-large 4k displays to be utilized properly in commercial settings. 

Certifications for Mounts

When installing large-format displays, it is critical to choose the right mounting solution that can handle all of the weight and dimensions of a display. 

Large displays can be used as digital signage points in public places or as a digital work board at the front of a conference room. For public spaces such as venues, shopping malls, and university campuses, it is important to find out whether your mounting solution is ADA compliant or whether it can be recessed to meet the 4-inch depth requirement to avoid accidents and hazards. TAA compliancy for large-format mounts is also important when looking to be installed in government facilities.

When dealing with heavy displays, the government wants to ensure that the mount was manufactured in a country that prioritizes safety for the intended users in critical information technology positions. OSHPD grants a certification that is rising in popularity for states that endure instances of seismic activity. For a mounting solution this means that the hardware will withstand earthquakes meaning displays and hardware will stay fixed as the building around it shakes, rattles, and rolls. 

The last and final certification that someone should look for is for the mounting solution to be UL listed. Being UL listed means that the mount meets high safety rating standards and can be seen as a stamp of approval on a quality solution. While these certifications are all critical in determining a mounting solution, thinking about the installation and environment is another key part in determining which solution you should use. 

Mounting Large-Format Displays on the Wall

The installation of large displays can be a cumbersome task. Outside of the extremely heavy weights, the overall size and bulk of the displays calls for heaving lifting. This means there often has to be an installation team of two to three individuals who need to handle the display safely. When mounting to a wall surface or a cart, utilize a mount that can be fastened and linearly adjusted on the wall before applying VESA brackets and then the display itself.

With installation brings service of power and data being ran to the monitors. Traditionally displays that need servicing have to be fully removed from the wall and then reattached upon completion. To avoid having to send a three-person crew just to service the display, look for mounting solutions that either articulate away from the wall surface or have forward extension built into them. This will allow for a single person to safely pull the weighted display away from the wall and have full access to the cabling of power and data. Utilizing pneumatics can ease the tension of weight when pulling away from the wall and the use of an integrated in-wall gearbox can make things much easier over the life of the display’s usage. 

Mobile Mounts for Large-Format Displays

Large format displays can also be maximized by moving them from room to room. Traditional carts and stands will need to incorporate newer solutions that have the necessary weight capacities along with center massed anchors that minimize tipping hazards when displays sit 20- to 60-inches off the ground. Along with the safe positioning, maneuverability must be considered when placing large-format displays on mobile carts. Only certain sized cart bases will fit through doorways and is a consideration that needs to be through of when utilizing displays in corporate, education, and live event applications in the future. 

As displays change their footprint, so will the mounting solutions that accompany them. Solutions are available out in the market today, but manufacturers will continue to innovate and design solutions that will be used as displays continue to expand over the next five to ten years.

During the 2020 PSNI Global Evolve Marketing Summit, we sat down with the organization's Preferred Vendor Partners to hear about their latest offerings for integrators.

Interview with Penny Sitler, Marketing Director, Draper.

AVN: Tell us about your latest product.

PENNY SITLER: We are focusing on two big product launches this summer. The first,
The Foundation, was designed with installers top-of-mind.

Video wall installation can easily be derailed. Walls that aren’t flat, floors that are uneven, and tight installation deadlines are just a few of the headaches installers face. We designed the all-new Foundation Mount System to takes those issues out of the equation.

AVN: How can integrators partner with you on case studies?

PS: Draper is eager to partner with integrators on case studies. We have developed a new section on our website just for case studies and project profiles, and we want to include your projects! We can create a profile as long as there are good photos, and we have permission to publish them.

AVN: What is the number one thing integrators can do to market their business?

PS: Remember: A good integrator has a lot of knowledge. It is beneficial to find ways to share your knowledge and become known to current and future customers as an expert. PSNI members have a lot of sophisticated technical knowledge to share. Being a display quality and screen surface expert can help you separate yourself from other integrators.

AVN: How is your company dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic?

PS: Draper was designated an essential business and has continued fulfilling orders throughout the pandemic. We have worked with our dealers on solutions to shipping issues and project postponements. We have kept in close contact with our local health authorities to make sure we are doing the right thing to keep our employees safe. We’ve also been continually monitoring our supply chain and making adjustments when needed. Draper has still never had an employee layoff in our entire company history.

Working with local integration firm Owen Security Solutions, Tellus Science Museum in Cartersville, GA invested in a wide range of digital displays from LG Business Solutions USA and a dedicated video wall mounting system designed and manufactured by Peerless-AV. The digital signage installation includes a 15-foot-wide by 8.5-foot-tall, 2.5mm pixel pitch direct view LED video wall featured at the very center of the museum. 

According to museum officials, the tech makeover has enabled greater flexibility to manage and schedule content while creating an environment that’s more attractive to its school-age audience whose educational experiences and upbringings have included frequent use of digital technologies.

“This technology upgrade, centered on LG display solutions and streamlined content management, has delivered a variety of benefits for our internal operations and has modernized the guest experience,” said Jason Woodside, Tellus Science Museum audiovisual manager. “Having previously relied on consumer-grade TVs purchased at big box stores, working with Owen Security Solutions to install commercial-grade LG displays was a major step up in terms of the options available and the capabilities offered. For instance, the content management and scheduling capabilities of the WebOS platform integrated in our new LG displays has greatly simplified our content updating process and enabled on-the-fly changes, as well as scheduling content weeks ahead of time.”

With the old AV infrastructure, updating a single display required Woodside to load new content onto a USB thumb drive, then physically go to the display and update just that one unit. Using the WebOS platform, he can now instantly update content on any LG display from his office PC, or remotely, saving time and frustration on a daily basis. 

For museum guests, many of whom are K-12 students, the goal of the tech upgrades was to add a “wow factor” and better align with their expectations and interests as tech-savvy learners.

“The LED video wall has become a center of attention, not only because it is mounted in the Great Hall where our four gallery rooms branch off, but also because it’s such a stunning piece of technology that many visitors haven’t seen before,” Woodside added. “Along with 16 flat panel displays from LG, the LED video wall allows us to connect with students through an exciting digital canvas we can use to present any kind of content. Now we can do things like show up-to-the-minute earthquake information as it happens on a huge, engaging screen.”

The installation location proved to be challenging, because the selected wall area for the large LED was slanted at an obtuse angle. Despite this hurdle, Peerless-AV’s SEAMLESS custom flat video wall mount was successfully installed in just a day. The mount was designed with a plethora of features to ensure quick, safe installation, and serviceability. The mount also included decorative covers, which were installed to the sides of the mounted displays for a clean, aesthetically pleasing installation and final look.  

“When designing this custom LED video wall mounting structure, our engineering team took extra care, knowing the large system would be forward-facing and needed to be securely mounted,” said Peerless-AV technical sales engineer Rob Meiner. “Being onsite for the short, one-day installation to oversee the assembly of the large LED mounting frame, installation to the wall, and the hanging of the LED displays was truly a seamless experience for all involved. We’re proud to be part of this digital signage upgrade at the museum alongside LG.”

The Tellus Science Museum currently uses the LED video wall to promote upcoming events, marketing content and custom welcome and thank you messages for visiting groups and benefactors, and it has plans to develop original content in the near future. 

LG commercial displays also provide digital signage at the reception desk and cafe, with four digital displays in each location. At reception, two displays mirror the content from the LED video wall, while the remaining two share membership info and admission prices, respectively. In the café are three LG digital menu boards and one screen that mirrors the LED video wall content. These displays were installed with LCD mounting solutions from Peerless-AV. 

In addition to hosting as many as 20 school groups each day, a number of spaces in the museum are available for private events, including a series of banquet rooms that can be combined thanks to collapsible walls. The largest of these rooms, banquet room B, features two 110-inch LG video walls, each composed of four LG 55-inch narrow-bezel displays and Peerless-AV SmartMount Supreme Video Wall Mounts (DS-VW775-QR). 

“The museum had been considering tech upgrades for a few years, and we were able to show them some of the latest display technologies for this project,” said Kevin Turner, director of technology at Owen Security Solutions. “From the banquet room video walls that can display user content for events, to the displays found at the reception desk and the cafe, the museum now has much greater control over its messaging and can utilize the displays for a variety of purposes, including showing a live spillover feed for presentations or lunch and learn sessions that fill the museum’s auditorium.”

The upgrades achieved every set goal and have become a highlight for visitors, showing how museums of all kinds and sizes can adopt new technologies to drive attendance and increase relevance for the next generation of visitors.

AVIXA has released a new standard, Rack Design for Audiovisual (AV) Systems (F502.02:2020), which outlines the requirements for audiovisual rack planning, design, accommodation, and equipment layout. This standard joins the Rack Building for Audiovisual Systems standard to provide formalized guidelines for efficient design, build, and integration of racks in AV systems.

This new standard covers the fundamental processes and decisions necessary for designing equipment into a reliable AV equipment rack, from rack selection, thermal management, power system design, to earthing (grounding) and bonding requirements. It also covers the design input information that should be available to achieve an agreed-upon outcome prior to designing the rack, including system design documentation, rack location/environment, entry/connection method for site cabling, and more.

According to the standard task group's co-moderators, Jay Franetovich, CTS, product manager, Legrand, and Nick Pidgeon, CTS, director, Visualization Ltd., serviceability is one of many key benefits of the Rack Design Standard.

[Innovations in Racks and Mounts Provide Quicker and Easier Installations]

"This standard ensures the system you're designing is well built. It considers all aspects of the design—including cable management, thermal management, and power—to ensure a reliable system," said Franetovich. "Additionally, our customer base expects standardization, particularly when there are people from other industries doing multiple aspects of a job. Often, the person who builds the rack is not the same person who services it. A rack designed and built to both AVIXA's Rack Design and Rack Building Standards provides assurance, consistency, and familiarity to the person servicing the rack."

"For me, it comes down to the efficiency of the build and the future serviceability," added Pidgeon. "Thermal management and serviceability go hand in hand. If the thermal management is poorly addressed, then the system's longevity will be compromised. And if there is overcapacity—too much equipment within the rack—it'll be hard to get to the equipment to service it."

In our Coping with COVID-19 series, AVNetwork is interviewing manufacturers to discover how they’re handling the COVID-19 crisis and how the pandemic has impacted their businesses.

Nick Belcore, executive vice president at Peerless-AV, discusses the company’s response to COVID-19.

AVN: Have you pivoted your business strategy in response to COVID-19? If so, how?

NICK BELCORE: We have not pivoted our business strategy; however, we have added additional dimensions. The primary value proposition for Peerless-AV remains largely unchanged and we are utilizing this time to invest deeply in product development to address the needs of our customers and channels as well as to address the evolving needs created by COVID-19.

AVN: How have your day-to-day operations changed during this time?

NB: Not substantially differently from everyone else who is doing business today. Employees that can work remotely are doing so and those that must be present at the facility are there with a litany of safeguards to protect them. Thermal scans and temperature check points along with masks, social distancing, and sanitizers will be the norm for the foreseeable future. We continue to monitor the guidance and we evolve our policies to ensure we are doing everything possible to protect our team. 

AVN: Has COVID-19 had an impact on your supply chain? If so, how are you handling any  delays?

NB: We are a hybrid manufacturer—however, none of our manufacturing operations are in mainland China. We have not only had no disruptions in our supply chain, but we have also been able to gain a significant new customer base because of our continuity of product.  

AVN: Have you implemented any virtual training/education resources for integrators?

NB: The Peerless-AV training department, I would argue, is the best in the industry.  We have been conducting weekly webinars, most for continuing education units, and they have been robustly attended.  We will continue to do so until or unless interest begins to wane, but as of now, there are no signs of that happening.

AVN: What has been your largest leadership success during this time?

NB:  Our executive leadership team has been in front of this since the very beginning of the emergence of the virus. Because we are a global company, we were dealing with the spread of the virus in Asia and Western Europe long before it was a substantial concern in the United States. As such, we stopped international travel of our employees’ weeks before it was recommended by any governing body and similarly we grounded our sales teams globally weeks before shelter in place recommendations began to appear.  

We believe these measures kept our Peerless-AV family and, in turn, their families safe.  Similarly, we sold through significant inventory positions for liquidity while ensuring sufficient resupply to meet the needs of our customer base. We have been more fluid and adaptive then at any other time in the company’s 78 year history.

AVN: How do you think business will change post-COVID-19?

NB: The immediate answer is evident. People will be afraid and it will be up to our industry to empower people with data. The medical community continues to do an amazing job of meeting this threat, and it will be incumbent on the digital signage portion of our industry to pull through the recommendations of the medical community. 

Utilizing signage to broadcast entry criteria to a building will become standard. Thermal kiosks that dispense a variety of disease prevention products will proliferate and will assist us all in taking the steps that we must to keep us safer. Analytics and networking of devices to communicate information real time from location to location will help us to assess if there is increased risk in a specific geography, and will allow us to apply best practices to mitigate risk as much as possible.

AVN: Anything else you'd like to add?

NB: I am heartened by what I have seen of the human spirit during this catastrophe. I have seen more overtures of kindness directed at people who are putting themselves in harm’s way by going to work because they are deemed essential. 

The medical first responders and well as public safety personnel are appropriately out front, however standing right beside them now are the people that make society run. Grocery store clerks, bus drivers, train conductors, those silent people that do their jobs because they must have allowed our infrastructure to remain in place so that we have any type of economy at all to return to, however battered. 

It is my sincere hope that long after this virus is gone, the respect that we are displaying for one another will remain.

Premier Mounts has expanded its West Coast warehouse and operations in Corona, CA.

The current 50,000 square foot facility, which was designed with future expansion in mind, will see increased growth within the Logistics and Fabrications teams. The logistics team had previously used just 2,000 square feet and is now using 20,000 square feet.

“By increasing our logistics capacity, we have the opportunity to reduce shipping lead-times, and improve our reaction time to ‘late-day’ critical orders,” said Brent Henderson, director of supply chain for Premier Mounts. “This also ensures critical projects during the COVID-19 crisis can still ship even if our warehouses in Las Vegas or Buffalo are affected in the future due to the virus."

Premier Mounts also has added a new Amada 1253NT Press Brake to its manufacturing line to meet the incoming demand from dealers, distributors, and installers. According to the company, having another press brake allows for engineering and manufacturing to increase output of products while cutting down on critical lead times to better meet project deadlines.

SCN: What is your position, and what does it entail? What are your responsibilities?

TIFFANY DOZIER: As the executive vice president of sales at Premier Mounts, I manage all sales divisions for both stock and custom. This includes direct management of all sales and sales support team members and managing our channel strategy. I also work closely with our marketing team on brand messaging, new product launches, website, and public relations. In addition, I work directly with our engineering team on our new product roadmap strategy, revisions to existing products, and custom project designs.

SCN: How long have you been in this position?

TD: I have been with Premier Mounts for 23 years in various sales management and executive positions, but I have been in my current position for just over a year.

SCN: How has your background prepared you for your role?

TD: Prior to joining Premier Mounts, my background was in operations for a nationwide retailer. I had direct responsibility over budgets, profit and loss, hiring, training, and ensuring our monthly sales goals were achieved.

With each position I’ve held at Premier Mounts, I’ve been directly involved in the day-to-day management of our channel strategy. This includes establishing our global network of integrators, distributors, and OEM partners. Creating and launching sales programs and marketing initiatives that align with our partners’ business needs and vision is key to our success as a company.

SCN: What are your short- and long-term goals?

TD: We’re currently implementing a new strategy for our sales team where each person is assigned to specific accounts based on their market/vertical focus. This new method of doing business will provide the best service to our customers and will continue to help strengthen the relationships we have with our partners. This ties into our long-term strategy, which is focused on ensuring customer and partner satisfaction.

SCN: What is the greatest challenge you face?

TD: The biggest challenge we face continues to be the commoditization of the mount category. I have personally seen hundreds of situations where a mount purchase was driven by the cheapest option rather than the right solution for that particular project.

There are so many factors that we look at when we are recommending mounting solutions—attachment methods, fine-tune adjustment capabilities, access for future maintenance, and aesthetics are just a few things that come to mind.

As a company, we get involved in projects very early on to advise all stakeholders about things that most have never thought of. We are truly an extension of our resellers’ engineering, sales, and product management teams. We manage projects from beginning to end. This involvement is vitally important as direct view LED continues to grow at a fast pace. 

SCN: Where do you see the digital signage market heading?

TD: Direct view LED will continue to grow as a major category in the digital signage world. Using these products, the industry is able to create fully immersive digital experiences in places such as sports books, hotels, sports arenas, and retail stores. The use of dvLED allows for unlimited possibilities. We love working with our partners to come up with creative solutions to everyday problems.

SCN: Are there new initiatives we are likely to see from Premier Mounts?

The What: Chief is now shipping its Tempo Series Flat Panel Floor Support System. The AVSFSS allows quick flat panel installation by using the floor to support the weight instead of the wall. This eliminates the need for wall inspection and remediation, which saves time and money, particularly across enterprise rollouts, according to Chief.

The What Else: The two uprights that support the mount can be moved to adjust to outlets or other obstructions on site, while keeping the flat panel placement precisely where the system designer wants it. Cables can be run down through the uprights or behind the middle cover. Markings on the uprights make height adjustment easy.

The lower section houses an included component storage panel and leaves room for an additional panel or rack storage. The lower cover can be customized to match surrounding finishes for superior aesthetics. .

“The solution was first conceived for a customer who wanted to install 1,000 conference rooms in 90 days. That goal was impossible when considering the amount of time it would take to schedule wall inspections and remediate any deficiencies before a mount can be installed,” said Tony Caruso, product manager, Chief.

A 200 ft.-plus Unilumin Direct View LED video wall was recently installed at the Tropicana Sportsbook in Atlantic City, NJ. 

"We're building one of the largest sportsbook in Atlantic City—not largest by size, but largest by amount of LED," said Eric Winnicki, senior project manager, McCann Systems, whose company handled the AV integration.

The What: Legrand has extended its line of On-Q in-wall power products with the introduction of new On-Q Flat Screen TV Pro Power and Cable Management Kits. 

The What Else: Each in-wall kit includes a power input module with a drywall bracket and 6-foot power cord. Offered in white to blend in with décor, the module's decorator power inlet strap provides the flexibility of ganging other connections. Each kit's power output module includes a 6-foot UL-rated power cable. A tamper-resistant outlet with a recessed design accommodates almost any type of power plug, including right angles and wall warts, while a bush strap opening allows for the connection of AV cables.

The What: Draper has released the Icon Ace Freestand which is designed to provide a stable and reliable video wall mount when no wall is available. 

The What Else:  To ease installation, many components of the product ship pre-assembled; its modular design provides fine X/Y/Z axis adjustment for each display. 

The Icon Ace Freestand works with 46- or 55-inch displays with a 800 x 400mm VESA mounting pattern. It is available in 2x2, 3x3, and 4x4 horizontal array configurations. Each display mount can be secured, with screws (included) or with padlocks (not included) to public safety and reduces the risk of theft.

SCN: What is your position, and what does it entail? What are your responsibilities?

MANNY LINHARES: I serve as the director of IoT strategy for Legrand North and Central America. In this role, I oversee all elements of the company’s efforts to design and develop connected products for power, light, and data applications in commercial and residential applications. In commercial AV, our brands include Chief, Da-Lite, Middle Atlantic Products, Projecta, and Vaddio.

SCN: How long have you been in this position?

ML: I started in the IoT strategy director position in January of 2017. Previously I led Legrand’s strategy for our Data Communications Division, focused on the data center and building network markets.

SCN: How has your background prepared you for your role?

ML: I’ve also previously held positions with Eaton Corp. and Schneider Electric, managing research and development, applications engineering, project management, and many sustainability initiatives.

SCN: What are your short- and long-term goals?

ML: In the short term, we want to partner with manufacturers who share our vision of purposeful design and delivering a valuable user experience. Everyone is familiar with the estimates that our industry will reach somewhere around 50 billion connected devices by 2020. AV integrators will benefit from this growth explosion by leveraging the technology for their customers—but only if manufacturers can work together to help leverage these devices as systems through easy interoperability.

Long term, we want to support integrators as the business model continues to shift. We recognize that integrators need to be ready to build services and find ways to support their customers throughout the entire building, not just in a conference room or other dedicated space. With the proliferation of connected systems, there are many new and exciting opportunities for integrators to manage more of the ecosystem of the building.

SCN: What is the greatest challenge you face?

ML: It really comes down to interoperability. If we are going to realize the full potential of IoT for AV and a variety of other markets, these systems and devices need to work together seamlessly. Interoperability is essential to creating the kinds of experiences we hope to deliver as manufacturers—ultimately ensuring the satisfaction of our customers.

SCN: Where do you see the AV/IoT market heading?

ML: AV integrators have been dealing with the fundamentals of IoT for some time. Deploying products that sit on a network or that communicate with sensors is something this community is well versed in. Where integrators need to do more is in accelerating how IoT systems and devices can expand the scope of their services.

Working with both the residential and commercial sides of our business, it’s clear that the developments in IoT for the home are driving how technology evolves in commercial applications. Customers are already demanding that the same level of usability and functionality they have at home be available in the office. For us in the AV industry, that presents a big opportunity to own the expansion of networked systems.

SCN: Are there new initiatives we are likely to see from Legrand AV?

ML: We just announced an expansion of our IoT partner program. Since Legrand launched its global IoT program, Eliot, we have forged over 50 global partnerships with leading companies in the consumer electronics, hospitality, and automotive markets.

Our goal for this year is to grow and strengthen these partnerships to take our integrations to even deeper levels, and work to develop new ways of managing all the available data for the ease and benefit of the user.

SCN: How can systems contractors better position themselves to profit from products and/or services you offer?

ML: For success in working with Legrand—or with any AV manufacturer—we believe integrators need to see the AV system as the output to other areas. Every installation today has the potential of becoming a large, multifaceted, “smart” project. Often the AV system becomes the eyes and ears of the entire integration, being the interface and touch point for many operations. The integrators who deeply understand this and the client’s specific needs will generate opportunities to address requirements through integrated IoT technologies and devices.

As mentioned, AV integrators are finding that commercial customer expectations are being influenced by the technologies they experience in their personal lives. Because of this, customers now expect this same level of functionality in their work environment—the line between home and work has blurred significantly. It’s up to us as manufacturers to work closely with integrators to evolve and meet these challenges, and together we will deliver solutions and experiences that wow the end user and greatly exceed their expectations.

Often, we consider the economizing that has sharpened our work as a breathless, exhausting, and sometimes dangerous result of our industrial and profit-based society. But one area where that fine-tuning has been of incredible benefit to the AV industry is in installation efficiency—it is much quicker to install racks and mounts today than even a few years ago.

“Speed of installation is critical, and working with solutions that save both time and money is a huge win,” said Tony Caruso, product manager at Chief.

Paul Dolynchuk, director of product management, infrastructure, Middle Atlantic Products, said that speed is key—it’s the first of three things that integrators look for when choosing racks. “They want to build racks faster and get them out the door so they can move on to the next project,” he said. “Another focus is accessibility for servicing in the field. Since the location of the rack can make it tricky to get to the equipment once it’s installed, integrators want a rack that makes the gear more easily accessible when servicing is required.”

The final consideration for integrators looking at racks is a familiar goal that’s sometimes challenging to achieve: “Future-proofing,” Dolynchuk said. “Integrators want racks with built-in flexibility so that as systems evolve or need to be moved, it’s easy to make changes.”

Caruso stresses a similar planning strategy. Chief’s approach focuses on speed—both for installation and for access after installation is complete. “When choosing a mount, the initial installation should be a consideration, but ease of post-installation access for displays and components requiring maintenance or refreshes should also be a big consideration. Choosing the correct mount will not only solve installation issues—particularly in large enterprise rollouts—but will also provide both time and cost savings, as the time saved on each installation is paramount to the larger scope and budget.”

Chief’s new Flat Panel Floor Support System was designed with these needs in mind, providing quick flat panel installation using the floor to support the weight instead of the wall. “This eliminates the need for wall inspections and remediation, which saves time and money, particularly across enterprise rollouts,” Caruso said. However, as Chad Gebhardt, senior product manager, direct view LED and LCD video wall solutions, at Peerless-AV noted, even installations that are scrupulously planned can end up hitting a speed bump. “As it is standard for project deadlines to be tight and critical, installations inevitably take longer than expected due to a tedious planning/approval process and a long lead time for the LED,” he said. “With a compressed lead time and rising labor costs, ease of installation becomes crucial for integrators. Installers also rely heavily on solutions that can overcome on-site challenges such as uneven structural walls.”

The SmartMount Flat Wall Mount for Direct View LED Displays solution from Peerless-AV helps installers be prepared for such hiccups. Offering slim, space-saving designs that can be adapted to support various display sizes and brands, the mount features integrated cable management, easy-hang hardware, and a lightweight aluminum frame. The Customer Knows Best

Many manufacturers work extensively to understand their customers’ needs and learn how their products might serve those needs better. As Middle Atlantic’s Dolynchuk points out, the first conversation is only the starting point in a successful relationship. 

“The next step is to validate our design concept with the customers to make sure we’re solving the problem the right way,” he said. “We’re not going to sign off on a product until the customer agrees it’s the best solution.”

Peerless-AV’s Gebhardt agrees. “Installer feedback is extremely important to our team at Peerless-AV, as our solutions make it possible for these projects to come to fruition,” he said, pointing to work the manufacturer has done to shorten lead time on products. Feedback also led to the creation of a depth-adjustable wall mounting bracket system and an installation training video for its dedicated solutions. Installers can also take advantage of the SEAMLESS by Peerless-AV LED video wall integration program. “Through this program, we offer custom project managers and consultation, full installation services, and expert engineering and design such as CAD drawings and concept drawings.”

At Premier Mounts, assistant communications manager Brandon Breznick said user feedback is particularly important for informing future mounting solution designs. “As displays become more technologically advanced and possess qualities outside of just high-resolution video, mounts must adapt to provide users with the best user interface possible,” he said. “Feedback is also important for us because we are now getting to hear testimonials about real-life applications that help refine our products to be the best they can possibly be.”

That ongoing relationship is key, and can only help integrators in the long run. You know your end users best, you know what they need and what you’re not finding to solve their problems, so if you can speak directly with the manufacturer, those needs have a better chance of being addressed.

One product that benefitted from manufacturer fine-tuning is Middle Atlantic’s BGR Series, which now comes standard with a rackrail. A fresh take on the traditional L-shaped rackrail, the new rackrail design features square holes and slots that provide two planes of vertical and horizontal mounting possibilities for the new Forward family of tool-less installation solutions. These include easy-to-install lighting, cable management, panels, and brackets, and a preinstalled UPS base that optimizes available rack space and adheres to AVIXA’s rack-building standard, helping to create an easier, more efficient, and reliable installation.

Ensuring that customers know what products are available, and which are the right fit for a particular project, is part of that communication and relationship-building that so many manufacturers highlight. As Premier Mounts’ Breznick points out, helping an installer find the mount that fits a project application exactly will save both time and money. “Smaller installers may be unaware of the different types of mounts to use for a project,” he said. “When an installer or project manager is unsure of what solution to use, it’s a good idea to call their manufacturer of choice and speak with someone who has in-depth knowledge of their product line. When working together, hand-in-hand, we can always identify the most budget-friendly and easiest-to-use option for a project.”

Premier Mounts’ Convergent LED Mount Series addresses many concerns the manufacturer has heard from customers: its price was reduced; it’s stocked in sufficient quantities so units can ship in about 48 hours; purchase does not require a deposit; and the company offers price per cabinet so installers can easily calculate and understand the cost of the mount. Solutions are available for all major LED display manufacturers, so installers should be able to figure out the best option for their project when they speak with a Premier Mounts rep.

Clearly, careful project planning is key to a smooth install, and a big part of that is communication and knowledge sharing. Time is money: manufacturers note that when installers invest some time in planning, the effort will return dividends. “Making the right rack choices from the outset can help installers accelerate time to revenue, minimize headaches down the road, and ensure the longevity of the systems within the rack,” Middle Atlantic’s Dolynchuk said, “all of which leads to happier end users, which is good for business.”  

FSR has revealed plans to demonstrate additions to its core infrastructure product lines at InfoComm 2019 in booth 3942. The company will show a revamped version of its PWB-100 flat panel display box, a new SmartFit 10-Inch Poke-Thru floor box, and covers for its FL series of floor boxes.

The Revamped PWB-100

The revamped PWB-100 is an installation accessory for any flat panel display. It installs in the wall behind the display allowing the screen to sit flush against the wall. This unit provides a neat and secure environment for audio, video, control, and power connections and can be used with retro installations.

The PWB is delivered with a triple play mounting bracket, one decora device, one low-voltage device, one provided Gem box, and is compatible with FSR’s four and six IPS inserts. The unit is available in white or black and is suitable for painting or other finishing, giving it the flexibility to match any décor. It has a cable exit slot for the display connections and the excess cable can be hidden inside of the box making the entire installation as clean as possible. The cover screws onto the front of the box once all connections are in place.

SmartFit 10-Inch Poke-Thru

FSR’s new 10-Inch Poke-Thru floor box provides capacity, aesthetics, and installation ease. These sturdy core hole products combine flexibility via recessed mounting bracketry to accommodate a wide assortment of power, data, and audio-video connection options. Covers are available in three architectural finishes: brushed aluminum, black and brushed brass, providing an attractive appearance with durability and technology that exceeds UL scrub water testing requirements. The entire cover door swings open 180 degrees and the two smaller cable access doors fold down for cable egress while the cover door is secure. The floor box has eight gang openings: four in the middle, two on top, and two on bottom, and a complete line of sub-plates for device mounting is available to populate the interior, middle, and end areas of the housing. It can handle 0.5- to 2.5-inch conduit connections up to a maximum of eight.

FL Painted Floor Box Covers

FSR’s new FL Painted covers offer a cost-effective solution while still providing versatility. The units feature a silver painted cover with no flange.

The What: Chief has expanded its award-winning TiLED LED Video Wall Mounting System to include the Samsung IFH Series, the Absen Acclaim Series, and the Unilumin UpanelS Series. The mounts will be on display at DSE 2019 in Booth 1312.

The What Else: The TiLED Series is a modular LED mounting system to support creative video wall configurations. The system can include any of three mounts that support LED displays and connect together to form a seamless video wall.

Integrated plumb adjustment of up to 1 inch (25 mm) helps to compensate for imperfections in the wall, keeping everything flat. Offset mounting slots allow for easy installation and protect LEDs from the damaging friction that can occur when display edges rub together. A secure adjustment screw gently nudges displays together and keeps them in place.

B-Tech AV Mounts has added to its recent senior management team with a series of key internal promotions to board level.

Nick Spencer, who has led B-Tech’s marketing team for the past ten years, has been promoted to Director of Marketing and Communications with immediate effect, with former International Sales managers Jon Alway and Paul Haggarty also receiving Director level promotions for their respective regions. Paul will now take up the role of Director of Operations (Iberia and LATAM) whilst Jon is B-Tech’s new Director of Operations (EMEA). 

The appointments reinforce B-Tech’s growing global presence and continued expansion. With the additional promotions of Paul Haggarty and Jon Alway, B-Tech continues to align its international ambitions with a more robust and reactive management structure.

Matt Bennett continued: “These new roles reflect the restructuring that the Group has been undertaking. Jon’s new role has been created to tie in with our new operation, B-Tech International (Europe) b.v., which is our new European head office for the B-Tech Group. Jon will be responsible for the management of our European and MEA operations which will all be run out of our centre in Brussels, Belgium.

“In order to minimize any potential disruption with supply chains given the current political climate, we are migrating our remaining international operations from BTUK to Europe. This will include the distribution to our European and Middle East sister companies (Barcelona, Berlin and Dubai) as well as working alongside Tom Meylink, our Director of Sales for Europe, in managing the sales operations to our international client base — making it the lynchpin of our European operations.”

As an additional part of this restructuring, Paul Haggarty will be focusing on the rapidly expanding operations from B-Tech Iberia as Director of Operations for Iberia and LATAM. B-Tech Iberia had tremendous growth in 2018 and this is looking to continue as we expand into the LATAM markets as well as furthering our efforts in Spain and Portugal. 

Matt Bennett added: “Paul has already appointed Enrique Rebollar to be based out of Madrid to help in the sales management for Spain and is in the process of expanding our office and showroom facilities to meet current and forecast demands. With ISE coming to Barcelona in 2021, we are pleased to be able to show off our position and standing in the local markets.”

To complete B-Tech’s European team, in Germany, Christopher Barz has taken on the role of Operations Manager for B-Tech Deutschland. Back in the UK, Tom Kelland begins his new role as Stock Controller. Tommy has a wealth of experience with B-Tech and will be integral as B-Tech continues to improve operational systems.

B-Tech AV Mounts has announced the promotion of Mark Walker to Director of Operations (UK). 

Walker has been with B-Tech since 2007, and during that time has worked with most facets of the business, as well as establishing himself as one of the most well-known and popular faces in the AV world. Having started out in internal tech sales, Walker went on to progressive roles as area sales manager, key account manager and senior business development manager.

Known as the media face of B-Tech, Walker has also been instrumental in the development of the highly successful System X range around the globe, along with the online configurator that has changed the way integrators specify their mounting solutions. His new role will see him take charge of all B-Tech’s UK operations as the company realigns itself with its continued global growth.

Matt Bennett, Managing Director of the B-Tech International Group, said: “I am absolutely delighted to announce Mark as our Director of Operations for the UK.  Mark is a fantastic all-rounder and has demonstrated great aptitude in all aspects of company operations. The What Else: The interactive online LED Configurator will allow prospective clients and customers to generate an immediate image of what a new LED panel project may look like by inputting information such as the brand, display, model, wall dimensions, array size, structure, etc. The wall display will appear with the height references of both male and female. This process allows for prospects to get a first glimpse of their potential project all with the click of a button.

The What: RTW will showcase its 19-inch 4U rack-mount (MA4U) version of its TM9 TouchMonitor at AES 2018 (Booth 504G – Avid Pavilion).

The What Else: The TM9 panel-mount version is 235 x 135 x 45 mm (appx 9.25 x 5.35 x 1.8 inches) without the power supply and is ideal for mounting into front panels. The unit comes standard with a USB extension for the front panel and the mounting kit is compatible with DIN 41494/IEC 60297 19-inch 4U racks (483 x 177 x 91 mm).

The product has a graphical user interface that can be scaled, randomly positioned ,and combined in almost every way for optimized use of available screen space. Even multiple instruments of the same type, assigned to different input channels and configurations, can be displayed simultaneously. Plus, a context-sensitive, on-screen help feature supports the user, allowing for setup changes with ease.

The latest firmware version of the TM9, which is also used with the TM7, expands the basic software to a four-channel display; 4x Mono or 2x Stereo/2x Mono. Additionally, 1x Stereo can be measured without the need of an activated multichannel license. Output routing can be individually adjusted for each preset and all presets can be exported or imported at the same time.

The Bottom Line: The reconfigured unit brings all the audio monitoring features of the standalone RTW TM9 in a new design that is more easily accessible to users in studio settings.

Equipped with RTW’s nine-inch touch screens and an easy-to-use GUI, the TM9 TouchMonitor is the latest in the company’s rack-mount solutions, which includes the TM3, TM7 and RTW legacy products.
