The What: Middle Atlantic Products, a brand of Legrand | AV, has begun shipping its new Forward installation solutions. Forward is designed around an innovative new rackrail and Middle Atlantic’s patented universal hole pattern that allow the family’s blank and vent panels, cable management, lighting, and other rack solutions to be quickly installed without tools.

The What Else: The Forward family includes Forward Lighting toollessly mounts in the rack to illuminate the entire workspace, assuring that integrators can work with the best visibility even in the darkest closets. Forward Cable Management and Power Bracket Solutions keep cable runs tidy with horizontal and vertical options, while the power bracket simplifies any button power strip installation—eliminating the need for tools.Forward Blank and Vent Panels simply click into the new rackrail to achieve optimal rack design in minutes and without needing hardware.

Forward Small Device Mounting Clamps quickly mount and secure small non-rack mount devices vertically or horizontally using absolutely no hardware. Forward UPS base comes preinstalled, saving integrators’ backs from lifting and placing the heavy and large unit into the rack. Further simplifying the design process, Middle Atlantic is also offering a BGR enclosure that comes preconfigured with Forward installation solutions and can be ordered using one simple part number. This preconfigured option gives integrators the assurance of the industry's most trusted AV rack, packed with the benefits of Forward.

“When we asked installers where they spend a majority of their time and where they experience the biggest challenges, they told us it was inside the rack,” said Paul Dolynchuk, director of product management at Legrand | AV - Middle Atlantic Products. “Using that feedback, we created Forward. The highly anticipated family of options cleverly solves the most time-consuming rack-building tasks—from working in pitch-black spaces, mounting panels, and anchoring unwieldy cabling spaghetti, to dealing with power blips—without ever picking up a drill. Now integrators can release their inner speed demons, building an AV rack system more quickly and efficiently than they ever thought possible.”

The Bottom Line: The Forward accessory and options line addresses the entire system lifecycle and builds upon products that integrators have depended on for decades. With Forward, integrators can install everyday rack builds five times faster and with the reliability to ensure a satisfying and positive AV experience, according to the company.

The unit comes standard with a USB extension for the front panel and the mounting kit is compatible with DIN 41494/IEC 60297 19-inch 4U racks (483 x 177 x 91 mm).

The product has a graphical user interface that can be scaled, randomly positioned ,and combined in almost every way for optimized use of available screen space. Even multiple instruments of the same type, assigned to different input channels and configurations, can be displayed simultaneously. Plus, a context-sensitive, on-screen help feature supports the user, allowing for setup changes with ease.

The latest firmware version of the TM9, which is also used with the TM7, expands the basic software to a four-channel display; 4x Mono or 2x Stereo/2x Mono. Additionally, 1x Stereo can be measured without the need of an activated multichannel license. Output routing can be individually adjusted for each preset and all presets can be exported or imported at the same time.

The Bottom Line: The reconfigured unit brings all the audio monitoring features of the standalone RTW TM9 in a new design that is more easily accessible to users in studio settings.

Equipped with RTW’s nine-inch touch screens and an easy-to-use GUI, the TM9 TouchMonitor is the latest in the company’s rack-mount solutions, which includes the TM3, TM7 and RTW legacy products.

When Ocean Prime restaurant in Phoenix, AZ upgraded its sound system this past summer, it chose solutions powered by Ashly Audio.

Ocean Prime upgraded the audio quality for its diners by adding two Ashly PEMA 8250.70 eight-channel network amplifiers with built-in Protea Matrix Digital Processors, along with 12 Ashly neWR-5 network wall-mounted controllers to the restaurant’s sound system.

“Once we had the system upgraded the general manager came in and was absolutely blown away by how much better it sounded,” said Lee Collett, president of Bicco Systems, which provided integration of the system for the Ocean Prime project. “That’s the reaction you want when you’re upgrading someone’s sound. You want them to be that excited. And sometimes it’s as easy as putting in the right equipment.”

The upgrade to the Ashly PEMA-based amplification and digital processing brings improved fidelity and reliability to the system, which previously had struggled to impress with its live pianist and house music. Further, the upgrade to Ashly allowed for a fully networked system, meaning the main dining room, bar, patio, lobby, and three private dining areas are now all receiving their own specific attention to detail.

The private dining areas, for example, come equipped with televisions for meetings and can have their own audio even as a live performance is taking place in the main bar area. Once the meeting concludes, the private room can simply switch to the audio from the performance if they wish.

This choice of audio is powered both by the seamless network integration and the Ashly neWR-5 Decora programmable controller, which give staff complete control over the different zones in a way that is both intuitive and comprehensive.

“With the upgrade to Ashly we now have a system that fits our space,” said Tony McMahon, general manager of Ocean Prime. “Not just in terms of size and scale, but for use. When you’re providing a fine dining experience with an impressive menu and genuine hospitality, you want to make sure every detail is perfect. The sound is now in line with the high quality we and our guests expect.”

AVIXA has released its newest standard—Rack Building for Audiovisual Systems (F502.01:2018)—which details the requirements for integrating AV systems into racks by providing a process for consistent assembly, mounting, and cable management.

"An improperly assembled AV rack leads to negative consequences for the system's performance, and the end users are the ones that suffer," said Ann Brigida, CTS, AVIXA's senior director of standards. "This standard provides well-vetted guidance from experts around the globe that will improve the quality and consistency of AV system racks. We've included several illustrations and diagrams within the published standard to make it easier for people to implement into their projects. As with all standards, it is designed to ultimately elevate the end user's experience."

This standard covers the fundamental elements of building a reliable AV equipment rack including: assembly of AV equipment racks, associated options, and accessories in single and multi-rack installations; mounting and affixing of rack-mount and non-rack-mount AV equipment; cable management, including planning, lacing, location, and separation of signal and power cables for cable management entering and within racks; and final cleaning, labeling, and finishing of the AV rack build.

Planning for the use of this standard should begin during the project design phase and be implemented in conjunction with a fully-developed project documentation package. This standard does not cover design elements; therefore, the AV system design should be documented prior to beginning the rack building.

"This rack building standard was one of the top-requested standards by the AVIXA community," said Timothy Troast, vice president of product management, Middle Atlantic Products. "Developing this standard began at ISE 2016 with a group of AV experts from around the world. Since then, through numerous events, surveys, and phone calls, we've built a standard that is collective of the AV community's experience. The feedback from industry participants was so positive that an AV rack design standard is already well underway."

Troast was the group moderator; other members include John Bailey, CTS-D, CTS-I, Whitlock; Jason Brameld, Torpedo Factory Group; Jay Franetovich, CTS, Middle Atlantic Products; Nick Pidgeon, CTS, Visualization Limited; Jason Rouzaire, CTS-D, CTS-I, Ideal Systems Asia Pacific; and David Samura, International Criminal Courts.

AVIXA's forthcoming standard AV Rack Design will outline the requirements for AV planning, design, accommodation, and equipment layout. The standard will be published in 2019.

To learn more and purchase the Rack Building for Audiovisual Systems standard, visit www.avixa.org/AVrackbuilding.
The What: Bittree has launched the DSFB124NL series of patch panel enclosures.

The What Else: The first product in the series, the DSFB124NL-ST, is now shipping and accommodates high-density, simplex ST-to-ST connections. A second version, the DSFB124NL-LC will follow later in 2018 to accommodate duplex LC-to-LC connections. Both products will accommodate single and multi-mode fiber applications, while its compact 1RU form factor enables high-density 24-position patching – an important benefit in facilities with limited rack space.

Unlike previous-generation Bittree enclosures, the new DSFB124NL series includes steel gliding rails for easier access to connections, instead of the friction-based trays of the past. The gliding trays offer a huge benefit for smooth movement and steady-locking positions simplifying access between ports as technicians move, add, or make changes to the fiber-optic network. The enclosure comes with grommets, cable strain reliefs, and bend radius guides, and along with knock-out positions available on all four sides, technicians can easily accommodate any demanding installation.

The Bottom Line: The feed-through, slide-out enclosure solution is ideal for customers managing interconnections and cross-connections within IT closets and data centers, as well as in TV and radio facilities, recording studios, sports and live event venues, and various commercial AV architectures.

The (2U or 4U) lower bay features adjustable rails to mount equipment vertically, providing up to 30 inches of usable space. Reversible 11-gauge steel rails are tapped 10-32 for use with the included rack screws, and punched for use with alternate hardware (12-24, 10-32 or 6mm screws with cage nuts, optional).
Racks and mounts are the literal backbone of the industry. They hold up all of the more glamorous AV equipment, and we often forget to acknowledge how easy (or difficult) a mount can make an install. Here’s a collection of the latest and greatest mounting innovations the industry has to offer.

Chief CMS348

Chief CMS348

Chief’s new solution reduces image movement from common building vibrations caused by HVAC, foot traffic, road traffic, and doors. Wallmates can support up to a 300-pound display and features knock outs for junction boxes and conduit.

Question: How does choosing the right rack or mount save installers time and money?

“By choosing the right mount from the start—one that offers adjustability and easy-hang hardware—integrators are able to spend less time making calculations and adjustments, reducing overall installation time and costs.”

—Nick Belcore, Executive Vice President, Peerless-AV

"Choosing the right rack must be based on the type of equipment being mounted and where the rack is going to reside. System designs need to ensure all devices large and small can be properly secured in the rack while accounting for proper thermal, cable, and power management."

—Jay Franetovich, Application Engineer/Product Manager, Middle Atlantic Products

“Ease of installation and servicing are key considerations—having the ability to preset the tilt on a mount prior to installation as well as post-installation leveling/height adjustment are timesaving features that help to speed up the installation process. Mounts with an open wall plate design allow for the routing of cables and electrical through the wall to the mount.”

—Hal Truax, Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Crimson AV

“An installer-friendly mount should go from box to wall without any extra assembly, and be easy to service in all applications—whether wall, ceiling, or floor—because with integration, time is money.”

—Curtis Rose, Marketing Manager, Premier Mounts

“Ultimately, time is money when it comes to installation services. Leveraging a rack or mount specifically designed in response to installation challenges will not only help ensure a timely installation, it also helps overcome unforeseen issues that are out of the installer’s control.”

—Nathan Bohl, Sr. Director Product and Brand, Chief

Just Add Power (J+P), a specialist in Ultra HD over IP, announced that it will debut the new 725POE 2GΩ/3G+ SDI Power over Ethernet (PoE) transmitter alongside the new rackmount 3G Ultra HD over IP PoE transmitter and award-winning 3G+4+ Tiling Transmitter at InfoComm 2018, June 6-8 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, in booth N464. The company will also host Luxul, the leading innovator of IP networking solutions for AV integrators, and demonstrate the ultra-low video latency achievement of its 3G Ultra HD over IP Series.

"Our ultimate goal is to allow everything to play anywhere with record-low latency, even as formats evolve and as installation requirements vary from job to job and room to room," said Taft Stricklin, sales team manager at Just Add Power. "To make that possible, we've expanded our award-winning, third-generation line with a new HD-SDI transmitter, a four-input rackmount transmitter, and the industry's first 4K tiling transmitter. These are all building blocks that integrators can mix and match to create a seamless, cost-effective, and custom video distribution system that delivers reliable, high-quality video with 16-ms latency from source to screen — all over an IP infrastructure."

J+P's 725POE 2GΩ/3G+ SDI PoE transmitter

The J+P 725POE 2GΩ/3G+ SDI PoE transmitter adds SD-/HD-/3G-SDI format support to the 3G HD over IP system. The new transmitter eliminates the need and cost for an SDI-HDMI converter and allows enterprise and worship customers to scale SDI sources even to 4K displays. It features stereo output with audio delay, local HDMI loop-out, null-modem-integrated RS-232, and HDMI pass-through.

Also being displayed at the show will be the new 4K UHD rackmount transmitter, the VBS-HDIP-747. It provides the same features and benefits as the budget-friendly, compact VBS-HDMI-707 PoE TX. Both models distribute 4K video with HDR support to seamlessly meet ultra-HD requirements. They also feature HDCP 2.2, optional 4K to 1080p scaling at the display location, two-way RS-232 and IP control, and support for all audio formats up to and including Dolby Atmos and DTS:X.

The J+P 3G Ultra HD over IP transmitters family of transmitters also includes the VBS-HDMI-717HIFI PoE TX, VBS-HDMI-718AVP PoE TX, and rackmount VBS-HDMI-749AVP TX. The 718AVP and 749AVP distribute UHD and 4K video to every zone over a single Cat-5e cable along with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio, and transform the signals to stereo audio for two-channel zones. This complete lineup of devices enables integrators to mix and match J+P devices to fit their hardware and budget requirements on 4K HDMI projects.

Finally, attendees will also see J+P's 4K network video tiler, the 3G+4+ Tiling Transmitter. It's the industry's first transmitter capable of displaying four 4K signal sources on a single screen instantly. Added to the J+P Ultra HD over IP matrix switching system, it enables users to simultaneously watch four 4K video sources in multiple formats, including single-screen, video wall, or tiled video. It is an incredibly flexible device that can be applied to any size commercial installation requiring multiview functionality, providing video support for resolutions up to full 4K HDR compatibility. Once tiled, the video feed can be distributed to an unlimited number of screens, making it the ideal solution for commercial spaces and any size video wall configuration.

As part of the newly formed Commercial AV Brands of Legrand, Middle Atlantic Products will introduce the company's broad AV portfolio in booth C3683 at InfoComm 2018. Middle Atlantic will unveil its new high-power-capacity units of its DC Power lineup, the height-adjustable L7 Series Lectern, and the FlexView Series IFP display carts.

"This is the first time that Legrand will be presenting all of its category-leading brands in one place," said Mark Tracy, vice president of marketing at Middle Atlantic Products. "This gives us the perfect opportunity to demonstrate how Middle Atlantic comes together with other solutions available within the Legrand AV Division to solve the integration and technology challenges facing integrators today, making their jobs easier while truly transforming the spaces where their customers work and live. From 100-plus hours of training to our new power, mounting, and furniture offerings at the show, we are pleased to offer solutions and education to help our customers deliver amazing AV experiences."

At the Legrand booth, Middle Atlantic will debut the next innovation within its universal DC Power Distribution family. Available for North American and European installations, the new 200W and 300W models provide high current capacity to up to 24 devices—maximizing the same voltage in a single unit, 5V, 12V, or 24V, or splitting between 12/24V. They deliver the same features as the 45W DC compact and 125W DC 1RU systems, eliminating power cabling clutter caused by the growing number of small devices within installations. The solutions' multilevel protection on both AC input and DC outputs and built-in individual redundancy ensure maximum uptime.

The company will also unveil the new L7 Series adjustable-height lectern, which is in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to meet the needs of any user in any learning space. With its versatile adjustment options, this lectern is designed to visually transforms presentation spaces while delivering the ergonomic flexibility essential to users with varying height requirements.

The newly expanded offering of the company's FlexView Series line of display carts will also be on display at InfoComm 2018. The new FlexView Series IFP display carts incorporate device mounting and built-in power distribution. The new professional display carts are engineered to support IFPs and larger displays ranging from 60 to 102 inches with a large VESA mounting capacity that accommodates even the 84-inch Microsoft Hub; it has a weight capacity of up to 300 pounds. The new display cart lineup is available in a wide array of colors and finishes

In addition, Middle Atlantic will showcase its award-winning Proximity Series Sliding Mounting Plate. The recipient of the National Systems Contractors Association's Excellence in Product Innovation Awards Grand Prize, the Proximity Sliding Mounting Plate is a sliding mounting solution that mounts directly on the wall behind the display. The solution conceals mounted equipment while allowing for easy servicing without touching the display.

The What: ATEN Technology has announced the first in its new series of Ultra-Short Depth Dual Rail Widescreen LCD Consoles. Designed to exceed the requirements for space utility optimization, superior video quality, adaptive deployment, and operational versatility, the CL3800 is ideal for applications such as mobile live streaming in the broadcasting sector or control rooms with limited space.

The What Else: Supporting three popular video input interfaces—HDMI, DVI, and VGA—the console features an 18.5-inch LED-backlit widescreen LCD monitor with an integrated keyboard and touchpad. The short depth design fits 19-inch equipment cabinets, and is suitable for shallow racks down to 45cm depth. The CL3800 also provides a space-optimizing solution for specialized control environments, such as outside broadcast vans (OB vans), compact control rooms, and instances where space is at a premium.

“Designed with data center and server room customers in mind, our new line of ultra-short depth dual rail widescreen LCD consoles addresses space constraints in the rack environment," said Aaron Johnson, product manager at ATEN. "The equipment supports popular video input interfaces to ensure maximum flexibility, while the integrated, all-in-one LCD console makes it easy for the customer to quickly switch between systems in the rack when used in conjunction with a KVM.”

The Bottom Line: The CL3800 Ultra-Short Depth LCD Console Series is available for $1,900 MSRP through ATEN’s channel of distribution and reseller partners; to streamline the rack mounting process, an Easy Installation Rack Mounting Kit is also available for $114-145 MSRP (sold separately).

At William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey, instructors are embracing the newly installed active learning classrooms (ALC) in the school’s new building, University Hall. These classrooms are designed to foster interactive, flexible, student-centered learning experiences. Unlike a traditional lecture hall, there is no front of the classroom where instructors stand to lecture on course material. Instead, instructors move freely around the room—coaching and interacting with the students who are grouped in clusters of tables where they have access to technology that allow them to easily present their work to their peers.

This new teaching platform enables instructors to help their students demonstrate a process, analyze concepts, and apply the learning material to real-world situations, encouraging more dialogue than a traditional classroom. A crucial part of making these kinds of classrooms successful is granting instructors quick and easy access to the technology they need to control and send content on the fly to the displays at each of the student tables. Selecting the right piece of furniture that was not only approved by the architect but was built for AV wasn’t easy, but the school says that Middle Atlantic’s C5 Credenza alleviated the headaches that often come when working on a new build.

Working with the architect

“In the past, we have relied on the architect to specify everything in the room, but they have a very specific look in mind. It can be challenging trying to find a solution that balances their vision with our AV system needs,” said Bill O’Donnell, CTS, EAVA, DMC-D, AV/Network Design Engineer for Instruction and Research Technology at William Paterson University. “For our ALCs, the architect wanted custom-made millwork cabinets. We were installing about $20,000 worth of equipment into these cabinets, so it was critical that whatever we put into these rooms would ensure the system’s reliability and really allow the faculty and students to reap the full potential of this new learning platform. We had concerns that the custom cabinets wouldn’t guarantee the best system integrity, so we opted to search for a purpose-built solution that could meet our needs and hopefully match the aesthetic the architect had in mind.”

The available options were mostly limited to desks, a solution Deputy CIO Sandy Miller specifically wanted to avoid because it would have made the room look and operate too much like a traditional lecture room. Instead, Miller requested a more inconspicuous piece of furniture that would centralize all the technology while providing instructors with a user-friendly operation base. Middle Atlantic’s C5 Series Credenza provided the perfect balance of look, functionality, and flexibility.

Designing the rack

Once O’Donnell had selected the size and style of frame he needed, Middle Atlantic built, assembled, and shipped the frame immediately — an exclusive Middle Atlantic feature that the company calls Frame to Furniture™ and really saves time on the job. With the frame ready, it was down to selecting on the wood skins, which simply snap onto the frame once they were ready.

“The Frame to Furniture feature allowed the architect to choose the style, color, finish, door style, vent finish, and handles,” said O’Donnell. “With both contemporary and modern styles and more 30 color and finish options, the architect was able to really customize and select the details that met their aesthetic priorities while the integrator kept working — it was seamless. We were all impressed with the final product and I was happy that our equipment wasn’t going to cook thanks to the quiet internal fans — the C5 provided a reliable infrastructure built for our AV.”

“If we had gone with the traditional millwork that the architect was looking at, we would have needed two or more people to move that piece into place,” said O’Donnell. “And if it didn’t meet the rack sizes, we would have had to cut the bottom out in order to get all the equipment to fit. I’ve seen that happen and it’s really compromises the integrity of the furniture and of the system. It’s like moving a house of cards. But we didn’t have to worry about any of that with the C5 and Frame to Furniture concept sped up the installation even more.”

In addition to easing the design process with Frame to Furniture, Middle Atlantic also provides configuration tools that are available on its website. The tools enabled O’Donnell to confidently design a two-bay frame using the program’s built-in intelligent pre-selected options that provided him with the appropriate components to mount a PC, document camera, and VCR/DVD combo as well as a laptop connection within the rack. It also allowed him to build in plenty of room for any future rack additions. All the inputs and outputs for the room feed to an 8x8 switcher also housed within the credenza and a driving component for the rack frame. With a depth of about 19 inches, O’Donnell discovered that, as he loaded up the rack within the system, he need to size up to the 24-inch credenza model.

“The program alerted me to the fact that I only had one inch of space between the back of the switcher and the back of the panel when I originally selected the 20-inch model. I hadn’t even factored that in. With the program’s help, I was able to see that the extended depth model made more sense. Had it not alerted me, it really would have slowed down the installation and put us behind schedule because we would have had to cut the back out in order for the switcher to fit,” said O’Donnell. “The extended depth model allows us enough room for all the cables and connectors to plug in nicely without them butting up against the panel or forcing them into a hard right angles and causing cable damage and system failures.”

Easing the bid process

With the website’s configuration tools, O’Donnell was also able to set up the rack elevations and add them to the school’s bid specification when the installation when out to public bid. The elevations allowed integrator TBS Network Intelligence, which won the final bid, to be on the same page throughout the project and prevented some headaches down the road.

“It really helps integrators thoughtfully layout the systems inside the rack, giving them a guide to refer back to throughout the process. I have experienced an installation where a rackmount power strip was put right underneath the big 8x8 switcher, which is a huge hassle when you’re squeezing your hand in there to plug and unplug devices. Middle Atlantic saves integrators trouble and saves us trouble.”

A new look for a new kind of classroom

With its polished look, the C5 Series Credenza blends so well into the aesthetic of the classroom that instructors and visitors are surprised to learn it’s housing all the rack equipment.

“In the past, we built a Middle Atlantic frame into a desk, but the C5 credenza is a much more seamless solution,” said O’Donnell. “And with all the active cooling built into to it, we rarely have to worry about the equipment. Nine times out of ten, the calls we get for the ACLs are operator error.”

The brand-new ALCs have had such positive reviews from the faculty that the school is currently looking into converting one of the classrooms at its satellite campus. Because of this great experience with Middle Atlantic, O’Donnell wants to install the C5 Credenza in the new ACL but he also has his eyes on Middle Atlantic’s new Hub collaboration table for the students. The Hub, which wasn’t available when O’Donnell specified the tables for the main campus, is specifically designed for ACLs and ships fully assembled with cable management, power, and mounting systems already integrated — shaving off critical time and errors on the job.

Measuring 5 inches high by 19.2 inches wide, by 7.5 inches deep, it features standard 10-32 threading, steel construction, load capacity of 150 pounds, and comes in a black finish. Its fold-out design reduces packaging and shipping.

The ERVR line also includes the ER-VR2U, which has the same features as the ER-VR4U but is 2U and has an overall depth of 4 inches; and the ER-VR1U, which is the same as the others but 1U with an overall depth of 2.25 inches.

“Based on the popularity of our floor and wall enclosures within the security market and the many requests we have received from security professionals for space-saving solutions for rack-mountable components, the ERVR series of vertical equipment racks was a logical progression to expand our product offering,” said Keith Fulmer, president of VMP. “For installation applications that lack the space for conventional floor or wall cabinets, such as in smaller security IT rooms and offices, this innovative compact solution provides plenty of versatility.”

The Bottom Line: Now Shipping and Available in 1U, 2U, and 4U configurations, the ERVR series is designed to provides a flexible, reliable, and affordable security solution for limited-space rack-mount installations requiring up to a 150-pound weight capacity.

The What: Middle Atlantic Products has expanded its SR Series of Pivoting Wall Racks with a new wider model to provide integrators with more space to manage high-density cable bundles.

The What Else: Originally developed to combine the advantages of a floor-standing enclosure and wall-mounted cabinet in one unit, the SR Series provides the improved rear access and space savings of a wall rack via a swing-out cabinet section that pivots on a weight-bearing floor base. The Wider SR Series takes into account that systems are evolving as equipment continues to increase in capability and decrease in size, offering integrators a different option for mounting systems closer to the point of use.

Within a seismic-certified enclosure, the new Wider SR Series Pivoting Wall Rack is available in 24 RU, 40 RU, and 46 RU options. Featuring the SR Series' pivoting floor base, this solution saves an average of 9 square feet per cabinet, which is well suited for compact spaces that have a smaller footprint and do not require clearance at the rear of the cabinet, saving aisle space. The rack also incorporates Middle Atlantic's built-in cable management and tool-free QuickMount system for center section mounting.

"Middle Atlantic offers the broadest range of wall racks—all optimized for low-voltage applications and all designed to facilitate efficient, reliable installations,” said Paul Dolynchuk, director of product management, Middle Atlantic. “This wider enclosure fills out our SR Series by answering requests from consultants and integrators for additional cable accommodations. Offering more options for cable-intensive installations, such as multidiscipline, high-capacity scenarios where AV, data, and security equipment need to be housed together, this new solution helps ensure more reliable systems and better end-user experiences without added complexity or cost."

Middle Atlantic Products’ Proximity Series Sliding Mounting Plate was recognized with an ISE 2018 Best of Show Award by SCN sister publication Installation Magazine. The Proximity Series Sliding Mounting Plate is designed to address the growing complexities in residential and commercial applications that stem from ongoing decentralization of systems often located at the display. The editors of Installation Magazine, which covers permanent audio, video, and lighting systems integration within the global market, judged the awards on the show floor.

"To be recognized within the global market for the Proximity Series Sliding Mounting Plate is a real honor for Middle Atlantic," said Timothy Troast, VP of product management, Middle Atlantic. "After identifying the challenges integrators are facing, we developed a solution that is perfect for mounting small devices behind the display, while providing ease of access with the sliding mechanism. The award serves as a confirmation of our mission to provide innovative solutions that enable integrators to deliver amazing AV experiences with every installation."

The Proximity Sliding Mounting Plate mounts directly on the wall behind the display, optimizing unused space to store and reliably support today's AV devices without adding bulky storage furniture in the room or the need for an equipment closet. The plate mounts directly to the extrusion of Middle Atlantic's Vision Display Mount Series multi-display wall and ceiling mounts, increasing both installation flexibility and ease of maintenance. The Sliding Mounting Plate tucks discreetly behind the display, concealing equipment out of view for a clean aesthetic.

After listening to customer feedback—especially from the creative industries—the software has been completely recreated for the MacOS platform taking advantage of Apple’s modern Mac 64-bit architecture and multi-core processing. The software is available as a free download for Datapath’s customers.

The What Else: Wall Designer is designed to take the stress out of configuring hardware for a project by automatically adding one of Datapath’s range of multi-display controllers, projects, and assigning each output to a monitor. By redrawing screen assignments to suit the project's needs, it speeds and eases installation builds. Connecting a number of wall controllers to a Mac and Wall Designer will allow users to assign the wall controller to monitor and program them. Full monitor EDID management is available for timing adjustments.

One of the benefits of the Wall Designer software is the information it provides for configuration. Information such as screen dimensions—in pixels and millimeters, bezel sizes, and refresh rates are all included. The ability to choose from a list of previously used monitors as well as adding other monitors and even bespoke RGB LED configurations has created software which makes display wall configuration and implementation easier.

Wall Designer also features a user-driven monitor database. The range of monitors in the application’s database has grown to cover an large and constantly growing number of unique devices, as users have added their own monitors and submitted these back to Datapath for inclusion.

"Datapath has developed Wall Designer for MacOS after listening to its customers and their requirement to run Wall Designer on the same computers they are creating their videos on,” said Mark Rogers, Datapath’s product manager for software. “This is a high percentage of Apple hardware, so we have developed the software to take advantage of the modern Mac’s architecture and processors, but retaining the look, feel, and features that the PC version has to offer. This will provide seamless usability across platforms for our creative users.”

The Bottom Line: Wall Designer is engineered to provide an easy and intuitive visual interface for the Fx4, Fx4-SDI, and Hx4 multi-screen display wall controllers offering an advanced video wall design and Implementation suite. It enables users to place projects across a virtual canvas. Adjusting the input resolution ensures the project matches the content, with Wall Designer automatically arranging the capture regions or adjusting each region to suit.

Before you call your college or university customer to pitch a technology that will improve student outcomes and change the way instructors teach, slow down. It’s important to understand that pedagogy is paramount, and technology only supports different teaching styles, not the other way around—ever.

The editors of AV Technology Magazine have been down this path for you. We’ve interviewed many university instructional technologists and AV/IT managers, and we’ve provided some background and terms below that will helpful to read before you make the call. It’s important to do some homework before approaching these customers.

Sage on the Stage

The practice of active learning has been around for nearly twenty years—long before current technology entered the picture. All of your higher education customers will be aware of active learning pedagogies. Since the mid-1990s, foundational research from North Carolina State University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and other institutions for higher education has been showing that active learning classrooms (ALCs) help increase student engagement and lead to positive outcomes.

See: 10 Key Elements of an Active Learning Classroom

These active learning pedagogies are rapidly replacing the traditional teaching styles that are sometimes referred to as “sage on the stage.” This can be accomplished simply by rearranging the classroom furniture from the lecture-style format and setting up a series of collaborative group tables.

In recent years, new technologies have been developed to help support and enhance the learning experience, connecting instructors and students and enabling them to engage at an even deeper level through sharing and collaborating on content across multiple classrooms. And very recently, active learning technology solutions that are easy to install, configure, and support, and that also provide training, have appeared.

Terms and Resource Cheat Sheet

Active Learning Classrooms (ALCs) are defined as “student-centered, interactive, integrated, flexible, active learning spaces” (University of Minnesota, 2009). These spaces can take many forms, but typical ALCs include:

Movable chairs and tables or tables configured into groupings (often referred to as pods)

Multiple projection/viewing systems

Multiple whiteboards/writing surfaces.

The furniture and technology are designed to enable students to work in small groups and to enable instructors to work more interactively with students during class activities.

FLEXspace.org(the FLEXspace Flexible Learning Environments eXchange) is a vast searchable online repository of learning space designs, images, data, and best practices contributed by institutions. FLEXspace has a worldwide community of over 2,700 users from over 1,200 institutions in 40 countries.

Flipped Learning is a pedagogical approach in which direct instruction moves from the group learning space to the individual learning space, and the resulting group space is transformed into a dynamic, interactive learning environment where the educator guides students as they apply concepts and engage creatively in the subject matter.

Pedagogy (ped·a·go·gy) is defined as the art, science, or profession of teaching. It is the method and practice of teaching, especially as an academic subject or theoretical concept. This is an important term to know, as it’s often used in education when talking about different styles of teaching. The pedagogy is first and foremost in education, and technology only supports pedagogy. Don’t make the mistake of saying the technology will improve pedagogy!

TEAL (Technology Enabled Active Learning) is a pedagogical innovation established in a technology-enhanced multimedia studio that emphasizes constructivist-oriented teaching and learning developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

SCALE-UP (Student-Centered Active Learning Environment for Undergraduate Programs) is an initiative based at North Carolina State University. SCALE-UP has inspired active learning development at scores of universities.

STEM: Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

This is the first in a six part blog series wherein I will focus in on the bleeding edge of active learning in higher ed today.
Chief has begun shipping new storage solutions including the PAC527 Extra-Large In-Wall Storage Box, the CSPR Component Storage Panel, and the CSPH Under-Table Component Storage Panel.

The PAC527 Extra-Large In-Wall Storage Box is designed to simplify flat panel installation by providing an organized, recessed space for routing excess cables and AV components. A multi-level, multi-sectioned backplane with universal mounting slots makes it easier to arrange components and maximize the space available in all three dimensions. This helps installers be more flexible with difficult port locations on AV equipment. As with Chief’s other in-wall boxes, the PAC527 features breakaway edges that make it compatible with both standard 3.5- and 2.5-inch studs so installers can easily accommodate any stud depth on site. Knockouts for single-gang outlets and 1.25-, 1-, and 0.5-inch conduit are built in.

“The PAC527 provides space for more equipment and the back plane helps installers arrange or mount the components in advance before attaching wires on site,” said Gina Schneider, product manager.

Bundles are available with box, flange, and cover combinations. The PAC527 can be ordered with high-performance, isolated-ground four- or six-receptacle outlets featuring premium, non-sacrificial multistage filtration and surge protection to improve reliability and functionality of connected equipment.

The CSPH Under-Table Component Storage Panel provides storage while eliminating the mess of components and cables underneath conference room tables and desks. With more than 350 square inches (2258 square centimeters) of secure attachment area, it is well suited for consistent component placement over large rollouts. Once installed, the CSPH pivots 90 degrees to allow easier access in vertical position.

Another new organization option from Chief, the CSPR Component Storage Panel, provides more than 160 square inches (1032 square centimeters) of secure attachment area for AV equipment independent of display mounts. A handle provides easier access while securing equipment or installing behind the display. Technicians can remove the CSPR to service equipment without removing the display. This solution is useful for standardizing the deployment of AV component configuration across large projects.

John Jay College of Criminal Justice, located near Lincoln Center in Manhattan, has selected five FSR HuddleVU Collaboration Systems for its small-group study rooms located in the Lloyd Sealy Library of Haaren Hall. The systems allow multiple users to share and view their laptops, tablets, and smartphone screens on a main display, underscoring the school’s efforts to encourage student collaboration, group study, and shared projects.

Lloyd Sealy Library, which holds more than 500,000 books, periodicals, films, microfilms, and digital collections, offers students a wealth of resources for group study and shared projects, but was lacking in technology to facilitate group collaboration. Following an evaluation process of affordable options that would create the ideal environment for people to view and share ideas, the school made the decision to install FSR HuddleVU Collaboration systems.

“Everything was built-in so we didn’t have to reconfigure the current space, which was a concern,” said Geng H. Lin, library systems manager. “We decided to try two immediately.” FSR's HuddleVU systems include all the necessary video switching equipment, control hardware, display power control, and color-coded captive HDMI cables for quick installation and operation.

Once the FSR HuddleVU systems were installed in two rooms in the upper library, the College focused on stimulating interest via signage in the library, promotion on the library website, and a notification to students via internal electronic communications. The rooms were quickly in such high demand that the college added HuddleVUs in the library’s lower three rooms as well. Each installation was accomplished in one day and came in under budget.

According to the college, the rooms “just work” for the students. The HuddleVUs are intuitive and reliable, allowing students to operate with minimal instruction, and without asking for outside assistance. The school anticipates the continuation of increased collaboration among students when they have group projects, and looks forward to adding systems as space becomes available. According to Lin, “Students are extremely happy with the equipment — they are really enjoying it. It has been a great experience overall.”

Our goal as AV field techs should be first-call resolution. To make that happen and be pro-active, I try to follow some basic guidelines.

Brett Cohen

As soon as I get a ticket assigned, I call ahead to confirm contact info and address. I do this because tickets are often auto-populated by CRM software with outdated contact info or the HQ address, even if the ticket is for a remote site. Do everybody a favor, and let the help desk know about contact and address corrections.

I review the reported issue and if something doesn’t sound right, I ask the help desk for the actual e-mail from the customer or the reported issue in the customers own words.

DOCUMENTATION ESSENTIALS

Don’t wait till you are on-site to start downloading important documentation of your customer’s system. You may get blocked by their firewall. Grab Audio, Video, and Control diagrams, and your QRGs (Quick reference guides) while on your own company’s network.

Got a ticket for a complex site? Ask your CAD team for full-sized, and shove it in the rack when you are done for the next tech. Or, head to your local office supply super store and spend a few bucks on full-size print-outs. I’ve never had that expense questioned.

Room numbers and room names will change between design, install, commissioning, and client turnover. When you see those changes, report them to your team so they can be applied to the ticket systems and drawings.

DON’T LEAD THE WITNESS

When I arrive on-site, I ask to be shown the exact issue(s) they are experiencing. It’s good policy to squelch your pride, and ask them to show you how the system is supposed to work—for them. Personally, I can’t recall how every customer’s system works, and let’s face it, we work on hundreds of varying systems and touch panels. Often we can uncover a simple user error and be on our merry way.

Some key questions to ask are: When did you first notice the issues? Have there been any upgrades on the company’s network or operating systems? Any recent power outages, surges, or storms?

Has anybody been troubleshooting on their own? Sometimes after an innocent customer states “No, nobody’s touched it,” I’ll find an RS-232 3.5mm plugged into IR out jack, or a RJ-45 moved from a DM port to the LAN port. Hmmm.

BURN OUT, BURN OUT

Scenario: Last call of the day and you are exhausted and baffled. Here are some options that I use to clear my head and rethink my strategy. I call my wife and kids to tell them I’m not coming home anytime soon (so they won’t be calling every 10 minutes).

The monitor radiation, fluorescent lights, rack, and projector fan noise can often cloud my thinking, so I walk out of the room to clear my head. If I’m still stuck I prepare to call my help desk or another tech. Often, I say out loud what I am going say to my colleagues at the help desk about the symptoms and steps I have taken, and the fix or the cause comes to me before I have to make the call.

RIKKI DON’T LOSE THAT NUMBER

Create and keep a log of your company’s commonly used system passwords and default manufacturers passwords. Because I keep mine in a 99¢ analog iPad, of course I use code names to represent the devices and site names.

I also do the same for Wi-Fi SSIDs and passwords, bathroom, and room access codes.

I once picked up and turned in an iPhone that was left in a conference room I was servicing. Because the screen was locked, I could not determine to whom it belonged. That day I realized I was at risk of the same fate. So, I took my home screen photo, and using MS Paint, I added an alternate phone number to it. That’s one less thing I need to worry about.

MANUFACTURERS’ GOODIES: PORTALS YOU NEED TO BOOKMARK

Videowall color balance using Color Expert Software

Video tutorials and their videowall configurators

HTTP://CRESTRON.COM> PROPANEL > ONLINE HELP
Search the published answer IDs. You might find info that could cut your troubleshooting in half, and avoid on-hold time when calling for support.

Technical Support Database a.k.a. Cornerstone

CHECK ONE, TWO

Ceiling mics can be a little hard to isolate for verification. To test for functionality, I use a long shipping tube, bring it close to each mic, and with a very gentle tap I can hear it through the mic loud and clear, without any bleed through into the other mics.

This can be also used for speaker verification, but I usually just cup my ears. Try this during the next concert you attend. It’s a whole new experience.

CRESTRON: WHERE WOULD WE BE WITHOUT THEM?

Make use of your Info, View, and Route buttons on the front panel of your Crestron DM Switchers.

Press Info, then select input and output buttons to get signal details and device names.

Press View, then select either an Input or Output to see what is routed to it by watching the In & Out indicator lights.

Using your Route button when in a pinch to restore service when your touch panel is not functioning:

Press Route then desired Input followed by desired Output (or vice versa depending on your model). Don’t forget to take the route by hitting Enter. If you want to access more details via the Menu button, you can often enter your password using the Input selection button instead of the tedious rotary dial.

If you are a site facilitator, it’s good practice to double-check the labels on the Crestron switcher. Re-label them to something more meaningful to your application. Instead of HDMI 1, label it name of the source device. You can also edit the display names for the info buttons. Got some extra time? Make a two-column Excel spreadsheet that has A-end and a B-end for every cable and tape it inside your rack. That will save you the time, hand cramps, skin cuts and abrasions of going hand-over-hand to trace out cables if you have a failure.

IS INSIDE-OUT THE SAME AS OUTSIDE-IN?

Only if you got dressed in the dark. But if you are upgrading Crestron firmware, you’ll want to use the Inside out method. Start with the DM Switcher firmware, then the cards, then the transmitters and finally scalers/receivers. When you do the transmitters and receivers, make sure you are not doing them from the device itself or you will lose your connection in the process. Do these remotely from the frame. Always use Ethernet for these upgrades as wireless and USB will be too slow or leave you hanging.

RETURN TO SENDER

Crestron RMAs: Don’t wait on hold to submit an RMA. Submit them via E-mail, include Item model #, S/N, firmware. Include the associated components (run a DM report) Firmware that it communicates with. E.g., If it’s a TX-200 transmitter, include the details of the receiver or the receiver card and DM chassis info. Also, include the trouble shooting techniques you have tried and the results. You already know what Crestron is looking for, so just include it. If you provide all the right info, you may get your RMA confirmation E-mail without further questions.

SEQUENCE DOES MATTER

We all know that a reboot is a quick way to restore service, albeit we don’t really find the root cause that way. There are many opinions about what order to boot-up your rack. Polling for states and initialization can vary depending on hardware and coding. So, suffice it to say, if you don’t get your desired results with one re-boot sequence, try another.

MACGYVER STUFF

How do you color balance a video wall if you can’t get the camera to rest against a completely upright monitor? Stand there and hold it with one hand while you run your software with the other? Not unless you’re Mr. Fantastic or Plastic Man. Instead pick up some shock cord (bungee cord) make a large loop and stretch it from one corner of the monitor to the other. Now tuck your camera in it. If you size it correctly, the pressure will be gentle yet secure. I’ve had a lot of success using an X-Rite i1 Display Pro and Samsung’s Color Expert Software.

Selfie sticks are great for capturing S/Ns off of hanging monitors if you don’t have the remote.

Carabiner-o-adapters: I saw one of those Apple Store Ninja guys with one of these. He had every adapter he needed right on his hip. Use wire ties to fashion a hook point on any connector or adapter.

PICK A PORT…ANY PORT

Need to connect to a device, and you can’t figure out what its IP is? Run a scan with WireShark and look for IP addresses associated with familiar manufacturer ports:

AMX ports: 1319, 1320, 292, 2930, 3839
Biamp ports: 12000 - 12003, 61451
Crestron ports: 41794, 41795, 41796, 41797

Once you have a suspect IP, you can use the ping and pull method to identify the device. That is pull the device’s Ethernet cable off to see if the ping drops.

ping 10.0.0.217 -t (the -t gives you a non-stop ping, stop it with cntrl-c.)

If you have already pinged off your screen, add the time stamp “switch” by adding a -s and any number between 1 – 4 Ex. ping 10.0.0.217 -t -s 2

WithWireshark or other network scanning tools, use caution and make sure your AV gear is on its own network and if not, make sure you have express permission to scan. Otherwise you could find yourself escorted out the door by IT Security staff.

REALLY. IT’S NOT YOU, IT’S ME.

It’s awful to get dumped, but Crestron’s Dumpdmipconfig is a useful command for providing the port numbers of attached scalers/transmitters which then allows you to start a telnet session with that device. Use switcher ip:port of connected AV devices to issue reset or initialize commands, check IP table setup, issue ping commands, etc.

INVASION OF THE PORT SNATCHERS

You want to have eyes and ears on a room as you work, but what if the rack is in some far off telco/data closet? Find yourself an unused data port in your room and use the corresponding patch panel connection in the telco room to jump over to your AV rack network port. Now you are in. Just don’t forget to restore it.

As an alternative, I’ve seen many field engineers and programmers use wireless routers to accomplish remote access.

If you do use a wireless router to connect your laptop to the AV subnet via the rack switch, take Dale Becker/FE’s advice: Double check that your router has its DHCP server turned off or you run the risk of dishing out an inappropriate IP address onto that subnet and your AV gear. Also, remove any connections that go back to the client network because you might cause a port shutdown when the customers’ data switch senses your rogue router.

Important: Don’t forget to connect the client connect back before leaving.

APPLE SOURCE

Another goodie from Dale Becker, CTS, DMC-E-4k: “Apple products have HDCP enabled at all times, regardless of whether the content being viewed on them is HDCP protected or not,” he said. “Devices like video conferencing codecs and digital recorders will not pass HDCP content, therefore your programmer will need to disable HDCP support for a source/sink pair like AppleTV/Codec, but enable it if your source/sink pair is for presentation purposes, e.g, DVD player/Samsung monitor.”

YOU AIN’T SEEN NOTHIN’ YET

Have tired or weak eyes and need to make network or DM cables? Try the Platinum Tools EZ-RJ45 Crimp Tools for Shielded and standard RJ45 EZ connectors. The wires pop out the end so you can pull the jacket all the way into the strain relief tab and you can make sure you’ve got the color sequence right.

ORDER OF THE PHOENIX

Isolate your point of failure. I’ve been saved so many times with a $20 pair of folding headphones and a 3.5mm barrel connector to a Hosa Technology Phoenix adapter to check for line level audio. Use the same barrel to take the output of your phone’s headphone jack to inject audio into a DSP or input card. Bring up you levels slowly on these to be safe!

QUICK TEST CALLS

Check out http://thetestcall.blogspot.com for a list of phone numbers that you can call to test DTMF tones, latency times, and audio quality with frequency sweeps.

TEST EQUIPMENT

Got one of those Atlona HD800 signal generators, the ones without a readout? Obviously, you can’t determine which resolution your monitor won’t pass if you don’t know what you are sending to it. Procure a 1 x 2 HDMI splitter so you can use your AT-DIS7-PROHD portable monitor to decipher what you are sending to the monitor in question.

Gripe #1
VELCRO, IT’S WONDERFUL THING, BUT…
Installers, please stop putting Velcro over the manufacturer’s stickers;we can’t see S/N, P/N or MAC addresses. And when we try to peel the Velcro off, you know what happens….d-oh!

Gripe #2
2 RU KIDDING ME?
One of a field tech's worst nightmares: a 2 RU ceiling box. These things are populated in the shop with all the necessary gear and cabling to run a whole room. The last time I encountered one of these, the cabling was so tight across both shelves that there was not one component I could safely access to test or service. Hey, rack builders, remember that us field techs are working on a ladder against gravity, not at a workbench. Show some love and think of us when you assemble these. Make them serviceable.

Brett Cohen’s career has had its highs and lows, from satellite communication to transatlantic fiber operations, and almost everything in between, including being an inventor and a chauffeur.
The What: Video Mount Products (VMP) has launched the ERVR Series of vertical equipment racks. Available in 1U, 2U, and 4U configurations, the ERVR Series will be available September 1.

The What Else: The ER-VR4U accommodates rack equipment of any depth, allowing equipment to be mounted vertically on a wall, or horizontally under a desk. Measuring 5x19.2x7.5 (HxWxD), it has standard 10-32 threading and is constructed of steel with a load capacity of 150 pounds.

The ER-VR2U has the same features as the ER-VR4U in a 2U form factor, with an overall depth of 4 inches; the ER-VR1U has a 1U form factor and depth of 2.25 inches.

“Rack-mountable equipment, of any depth, can be installed vertically or horizontally to best accommodate your workplace,” said Keith Fulmer, president of VMP. “Available in 1U, 2U and 4U configurations, the versatile ERVR series gives you a flexible, reliable, and affordable solution for all of your limited space installations requiring up to a 150-pound weight capacity. Simple in design but rugged in construction, it’s tough enough for even your most challenging applications.”

The Bottom Line: The ERVR Series was designed in response to customer requests for compact solutions for rack-mountable components, and provides a versatile solution for applications that lack the space for conventional floor or wall cabinets.

The What: QSC has launched the TSC-47W-G2, a 4.7-inch, in-wall touchscreen dialer/controller. The new touch screen combines capacitive LCD touch technology with a 960x540 resolution display and Power over Ethernet (PoE) for simplified single cable installation.

The What Else: The TSC-47W-G2 can operate in both portrait or landscape mode providing integrators design flexibility when installing in a wall, lectern, or a similar flat surface. In addition, these units include accessories for mounting to U.S. and European standard wall and junction boxes.

“The new TSC-47W is the perfect control accessory for nearly any Q-SYS installation,” said Mike Brandes, product manager of Installed Systems, QSC. “It gives integrators a go-to device when they need a small-format screen that installs easily, and offers a fully customizable interface without the need for any programming experience.”

The Bottom Line: As with all Q-SYS touchscreens, users can create custom graphical user control interfaces (UCIs) for the TSC-47W-G2 directly within Q-SYS Designer Software. Drag-and-drop configuration allows integrators to provide end users a full range of controls, from complete systems control and monitoring to one-touch deployments of complex presets.

Middle Atlantic Products showcased its family of lecterns at InfoComm 2017. Designed to encapsulate the needs of the integrator from entry-level to sophisticated use cases, the company showcased the new L2 Series, updates to its legacy L5 solution, and a concept design that addresses the needs of a wide range of integrators and end users.

“In creating our L5 Series lectern, we discovered from our customers that they need a lectern family that could be scaled to fit any system requirements and budget,” said Megan Knedler, director of product management, furniture, for Middle Atlantic. “With the L2 Series, we’ve introduced an affordable pre-configured lectern that meets that needs for rooms that don’t require all the options and customization available in the upgraded L5 series. Together, these solutions demonstrate the series’ benefits in a campus-wide deployment in higher education environments. Attendees will also have a chance to see and discuss how we’re exploring the lectern needs of tomorrow within our Innovation Pavilion.”

The new L2 Series Lectern is a budget-friendly lectern that comes complete with a rack, power, thermal and cable management, and connectivity, delivering support and security for AV systems. Its contemporary, durable design is also optimized for mobility. Available in easy-to-order, pre-configured models with-or-without a flip-up shelf for additional surface space, the L2 Series Lectern is an all-in-one solution suitable for nearly any room or auditorium.

The L5 Lectern offering has been enhanced with new design and selection options, including storage drawers and shelves. Users can completely customize it using the company’s web-based design tool, which streamlines the ordering process to quickly and efficiently select the right products and accessories for any system. If a simpler solution is needed, customers can choose from a selection of pre-configured, fully designed lecterns that incorporate current design trends.

Also on display at Middle Atlantic’s booth was a concept lectern that aims to build upon the series’ flexibility.

The What: Yamaha has expanded its Commercial Installation Solutions (CIS) product line by adding the PGM1 paging station microphone, PGX1 paging station extension, MCP1 wall-mount controller, SWR2100P-5G and SWR2100P-10G L2 switches, and ProVisionaire Control custom control panel software. The new products were launched at InfoComm 2017.

The What Else: The PGM1 and MCP1 are IP network devices designed to simplify installation while providing increased flexibility for placement and distribution within large systems. The PGM1 is a Dante device, delivering high-quality, low-latency audio data over long distances. The PGX1, and MCP1 include buttons that can be assigned to desired functions via MTX/MRX Editor software applications, and the units can be powered via POE (Power over Ethernet) from the company’s new SWR2100P-5G and SWR2100P-10G L2 switches.

The new SWR line of Dante capable switches is designed for the installation market. Network and PoE power status of systems built around the SWR2100P-5G and SWR2100P-10G L2 switches can be remotely monitored from the dedicated Yamaha LAN Monitor software application. Yamaha LAN Monitor also allows remote PoE power on/off switching.

The ProVisionaire Control application allows comprehensive control of MTX/MRX Series Digital Signal Processors, CL, TF, and QL Series Digital Mixing Consoles, and many other Yamaha products from a Windows computer. Yamaha has also announced the iPad app, ProVisionaire Touch, that will control TF Series Digital Audio Consoles.

With an intuitive programming interface, Provisionaire Control is designed for easy, yet highly customized control of Yamaha sound system environments. Faders, meters, and buttons can be arranged on the computer display as required to create custom control panels for control and monitoring. Communication with audio devices can be handled wirelessly or via a hardwired connection for maximum stability and reliability. Three user access levels provide increased security in commercial installations.

“The Yamaha CIS Series has proven itself a tried and true audio solution among integrators around the world for commercial installations,” said Marc Lopez, director of marketing CA products, Yamaha Professional Audio. “From input to output and control devices, these new products will further enhance the comprehensive product range to provide our customers everything required to create architecturally attractive, high-quality sonic environments.”

The Bottom Line: A number of sound solutions for large-scale commercial installations, the new products feature a Dante Paging station and a network connected smart control panel. A new software control platform will enable users to develop touchscreen interfaces that will address the entire CIS product line and allow remote control of many of the company’s mixing consoles from a single, highly customized control page.

Primacoustic’s Element panels are a range of acoustic absorbers designed to give users more aesthetic options in their spaces.

Rather than being limited to the typical square and rectangular panels, the hexagonal shape and beveled edges allow the panels to be installed in unique patterns and clusters. Now primary reflections and flutter echo can be controlled with an acoustic treatment layout that is personalized to your space.

The 16-inch (406mm) Element panels are 1.5 inches (3.8cm) thick, and are constructed from six-pound high-density glass wool for optimal broadband absorption. As with all Primacoustic panels, Element panels have been tested to achieve stringent Class-A fire ratings, making them safe for use in installations worldwide. The Element panels are available in black, gray or beige Broadway acoustic fabric, or in Primacoustic’s proprietary Paintables white finish.

The Fusion Modular Series uses common components of Fusion multi-display mounts and a new online configurator to give customers the ability to build and order the parts necessary to meet their exact application requirements.

The What Else: The updated configurator supports menu board and video wall configurations, and allows for non-standard single row installs, such as multiple display sizes, mixed portrait/landscape, and gaps between displays. The mobile-friendly configurator is built directly in to milestone.com and integrated with Chief’s MountFinder database, and customers can see MSRP pricing and order directly from the website.

The Bottom Line: Customers will be able to buy the pieces of Fusion needed to create multi-display installations to order. The tool will provide the user with the correct length of extrusion as well as the number and type of interface brackets and wall plates. The tool provides a solution for ceiling-mounted menu boards and video walls as well as wall mounted menu boards.

Taps are selected by externally accessible rotary control knobs, while removable plates make wiring easier.

Two models include an optional volume control adjustment knob for the sound masking driver. This 50-ohm potentiometer shaft-adjust volume control allows fine-tuning of the masking noise level. The LT/SM assemblies feature a partitioned back box to provide 700 cubic inches of volume for each driver, and 1x2 or 2x2 fine-perforation grille for maximum acoustic transparency and sound transmission. The 1x2 assemblies include an integral T-bar to eliminate the need for a separate ceiling grid bar to hold the adjacent cut tile. All models feature tie-off points or restraint tabs for code compliance.

The Bottom Line: LT-style speaker systems are also available without the sound masking option, in a variety of driver-transformer-back box configurations. Speaker models can be compared side-by-side by visiting Lowell’s new website.

This helps installers be more flexible with difficult port locations on AV equipment. As with Chief’s other in-wall boxes, the PAC527 features breakaway edges that make it compatible with both standard 3.5- and 2.5-inch studs, so installers can accommodate any stud depth on site. Knockouts for single-gang outlets and 1.25-, 1-, and 0.5-inch conduit are included, and options are available to order with SurgeX non-sacrificial, multistage filtration and surge protection.

Another new organization option from Chief, the CSPR Component Storage Panel, will be making its debut at InfoComm. The CSPR provides more than 160 square inches of secure attachment area for AV equipment independent of display mounts. A handle provides easier access while securing equipment or installing behind flat panels. Technicians can remove the CSPR to service equipment without removing the display. This solution is well suited for standardizing the deployment of AV component configuration across large projects.

More than 700 panel mounts configured in various and large arrays are in use in and around MCO airport.

“We’ve veered away from using the word mount because like our tagline says, we’re #MoreThanAMount,” said Brandy Alvarado, marketing manager and business development for RPV. “Many of our clients’ projects are so complex and heavily engineered that we can’t just call what we do a ‘mount.’ We have a legacy of creating amazing visual experiences for our clients whether it is in retail, higher education, entertainment, command/control rooms, corporate boardrooms, or other digital signage applications.”

Also at the booth will be rp’s “Mount Hall of Fame,” and its Digital Zipper, a unique serpentine structure housing mounting solutions typically used for mounting LED, flat panels, projection cubes, and front/rear projection systems.

RPV does not typically show products, but rather “solutions,” due to the custom nature of their designs. This year, the company will demonstrate two customizable, off-the-shelf solutions: Wall Mate and LED Max Series. Wall Mate is a customizable flat panel solution that can be specified and plugged into a building early on to ease onsite coordination. This self-contained unit allows for panel decision to be determined at a later time, as it accommodates a variety of sizes, mounting options, and orientations.

The What: DPA Microphones (Booth 6169) will debut its d:vice MMA-A Digital Audio Interface and DSM6000 Microphone Base at InfoComm 2017. The MMA-A features flexibility and a small form factor that allows the user to pull out the d:vice quickly and efficiently in fluid situations. The intelligible sound and ease of installation provided by the new microphone base caters to the varying industry needs of architects, AV consultants, system integrators, and installing electricians.

DPA d:vice d:screet Miniature

The What Else: The d:vice MMA-A Digital Audio Interface is a two-channel microphone preamp and A/D converter offering mono, dual, and stereo capabilities. The d:vice comes with interchangeable lightning and USB cables for connectivity. Its MicroDot inputs allow the d:vice to be connected to all DPA miniature microphones, including the d:screet Miniature, d:fine Headset, d:vote Instrument, and the d:dicate Recording microphones with the optional MMP-G preamp.

Designed to be placed on a table or podium, or attached to a ceiling or wall, the DSM6000 Microphone Base is available in two colors—black and white—and comes with either a MicroDot connector, an XLR connector, or unterminated leads for connections to Phoenix blocks. The d:screet capsule is mounted on a sleek boom that, for the tabletop version, has a gooseneck at the top and the bottom. The ceiling version consists of one gooseneck. In both versions, the cable can exit to the side of or beneath the unit.

DSM6000 Microphone BaseDPA’s d:screet Podium Microphone features a miniature d:screet supercardioid capsule that combines controlled directionality with rejection of background noise through its linear frequency response. The capsule has a uniform off-axis response, so even when ceiling mounted, it will capture the sound of all speakers in range.

“When it comes to choosing audio equipment for conference or installation venues, a sleek and minimal design is often just as important as sound quality and versatility,” said Christopher Spahr, vice president of sales and marketing, DPA Microphones. “We are excited to introduce these new solutions to industry professionals at InfoComm this year. These soluions provide AV consultants and system integrators with equipment tailored to the size and shape of any venue without compromising on sound quality.”

The Bottom Line: DPA’s DSM6000 Microphone Base is currently shipping while the d:vice MMA-A Digital Audio Interface is scheduled to ship at the end of May.

Users can customize the L5 and streamline the ordering process through the website, addressing any system requirements with the products and accessories available for the series—including new storage, shelving, and cable management options. If a simpler solution is needed, customers can choose from a selection of preconfigured lecterns that incorporate current design trends.

L5 Series Lectern

“Our online design experience allows our customers to build intuitive, personalized systems that match the exact design and installation needs of today's demanding AV environments,” said Megan Knedler, director of product management, furniture for Middle Atlantic. “The selection and configuration process within our design solution builds upon that assurance, providing our customers with an improved, tailored ordering experience. We are also reaffirming our commitment to customers who need expedited quotes and ordering time with our new lineup of preconfigured models.”

Within the company’s online design experience, users are guided through the process step-by-step, selecting from size, styles, finishes, frame top and cutouts, flip-up shelves, and other component options for aesthetics and systems flexibility. The tool will automatically calculate pricing and generate a new, unique part number for the frame's wood kit to quickly determine exact costs.

The preconfigured L5 Series Lectern models are well suited for integrators looking for a standard design with no customization. Customers simply choose from limited design options, and the preconfigured lectern ships in two weeks.

Based on integrator feedback, Middle Atlantic has also added new features to the L5 Series Lecterns. Users can now opt for additional storage, selecting a document camera drawer that accommodates the most popular models, a storage drawer to fit personal devices, or no storage at all. Other features include an optional flip-up shelf for extra surface space and customized cutouts on the flat models to provide additional cable management for table boxes.

The ODMLA25 Articulating Outdoor Wall Mount has a 150 pounds (68kg) weight capacity and more than 20 inches (508mm) extension range for optimal viewing from many positions, Centris technology for plus-5 and minus-15 degrees of fingertip tilt, quick-connect interface for easy mounting, and padlock option.

The Bottom Line: Both mounts feature weatherproof design, including outdoor-rated finishing, galvanized plating and stainless steel hardware.
