Brilliant Visuals without the Bulk

At its core, the EB-XQ2030B’s 3-chip 3LCD technology produces rich, full-color output, while high native contrast delivers the deep black levels essential for immersive, large-scale experiences. Its 4K Crystal Motion technology² produces intricate detail with exceptional clarity, enabling immersive and interactive experiences across complex surfaces and demanding environments.

Expanding Limits with New H-Series Lens Family

Alongside the EB-XQ2030B, Epson is expanding its professional lens lineup with the introduction of the new H-Series lenses – a unified family designed to meet the full spectrum of modern installation demands. The new portfolio delivers comprehensive throw ratio coverage from 0.35 to 11:1, combining four all-new lenses and six updated models. Two new ultra-short throw options expand creative possibilities: one featuring an L-shaped lens designed for 90-degree projection onto off-axis surfaces, and a straight UST option with a 0.39 throw ratio, ideal for rear projection and tight spaces. A newly added zoom capability in the ultra short throw range provides even greater flexibility, while long throw options support image delivery across expansive venues. Combined, the range allows floors, ceilings and unconventional surfaces to become dynamic display canvases, with consistent brightness and color across multi-projector setups.

While Las Vegas turned up temperatures for InfoComm 2026, the show made its own heat. There was serious energy on the show floor, with plenty of exhibitors, presentations, and experiences to keep attendees engaged. The completed renovations to the Las Vegas Convention Center helped traffic flow between the Work (Central Hall) and Play (North Hall) areas, with free session spaces and other attractions positioned between the two.

[What's the Buzz? How InfoComm Has Changed in Five Years]

First, let's talk about those show numbers. I said it on the show floor and I'll stand by my assessment: Attendance was fine. Not record-breaking, not a disaster. Fine. Normal. Within acceptable parameters.

The official numbers back me up. According to AVIXA, there were 28,132 verified attendees (35,707 total registrants). International attendance accounted for 20% of attendees, with representation from 94 countries. There were also 807 exhibitors.

How does that compare to last year's effort in Orlando, FL? InfoComm 2025 attracted 817 exhibitors, which was down from 833 in 2024. So, yes, there's a small downward trend, but 807 still gave attendees plenty to experience.

Orlando attendance was 30,998, and InfoComm 2024 in Las Vegas was 30,271, which reported 23% international attendance. That little nugget of data is important. Based on these numbers, a quick bit of math shows me the show lost about 1,300 international attendees from the last time we all gathered in Las Vegas, which represents roughly 60% of the attendee loss.

What kept them away? Was it outrageous travel costs? International unrest? The growing popularity of ISE in Barcelona? Methinks it's all of the above.

Speaking of numbers, Michael Sullivan-Trainor, AVIXA’s senior industry analyst, reported during the show that growth in the Pro AV industry has slowed from 5.4% to 3.9%, but it's still ahead of GDP in most countries. Even more encouraging: Pro AV buyers are increasing budget growth expectation this year. Here are a couple of other things I noticed on the show floor.

Don't sleep on virtual production.

If you haven't heard, there's a buzzword gaining momentum in Pro AV: broadcast AV. (You can get some insights from our recent ebook, AV for Broadcast.) During a presentation for media covering the show, Sullivan-Trainor said the growing broadcast AV market is changing the way the industry is looking at delivering AV. In fact, broadcast production rooms that deliver high production values are being adopted across other verticals, including corporate, government, healthcare, education, and more.

According to Trainor, the core principles of broadcast AV include workflows that offer repeatable execution, not just ad hoc operations, with enterprise-first designs that are focused on business teams and are aligned with IT requirements. And virtual production is a "very important" part of the growing broadcast AV market segment. He mentioned one company that embraced virtual production and was producing content 30% faster as well as 40% more content. That kind of ROI is hard to ignore.

Sony gets it. The company has developed a comprehensive virtual production ecosystem, and partnered with Vū Tampa Bay to demonstrate a setup designed for corporate users during the show. The solution featured Sony's CAPRI modular dvLED display, which can be upgraded to a VERONA display with a lower pixel pitch and deeper blacks. Both are purpose-built Sony Crystal LEDs for virtual production. The demo also had a BRC-AM7 PTZ camera with AI integration for tracking and facial recognition.

Jaime Raffone, senior sales manager, virtual production, Sony, said the demand for virtual production at the corporate level is "growing exponentially," because it offers a "very easy point of entry." Many financial and Fortune 500 companies have already adopted virtual production workflows and are now building out their facilities for more complex productions. "Content is still king," Raffone offered, adding that virtual production provides an "easier, more immersive way to build their brand."

A virtual production set was also part of the Smart Workplace, which was powered by FORTÉ and showcased modern office technologies. It was one of three new immersive experiences at the show; there was also the Pitch, powered by Diversified, which provided a look at the modern fan experience, while the Retail Experience demonstrated how Pro AV technologies are influencing consumer engagement in physical retail environments.

Stop trying to bury the projector business.

Yes, the projector business is not en fuego. Robert Ambrose, CEO and co-founder of Caretta Research, took a quick look at the numbers for me. The market is not showing a positive trend; in fact, it's on the decline at a roughly 5% drop annually. But it ain't dead yet.

According to Petro Shimonishi, director of new business development and business transformation for Panasonic Projector & Display Americas, the market oscillates between flat and declining, depending on the year. Except this year—because sales are up. She's seeing customers "boomerang" from dvLED solutions due to the cost and complexities of maintenance issues.

Panasonic is also investing in a new projector technology. VIVID PRIME is a RGB laser light source technology that's designed to eliminate the "rainbow effect" without introducing new imaging issues. The new PT-HTQ20 4K projector is the company's first to feature VIVID PRIME, and is designed to appeal to museums, themed entertainment, and immersive experiences. Shimonishi said the company is also seeing new interest from golf simulation systems that rely on projectors. Obviously, you can't launch a golf ball at a dvLED display—or at least not more than once.

Joel St-Denis, director of project management at Christie, admitted concerts and live events have been "taken over" by LED. However, he said, "There's still growth in certain areas." Fixed installations are a bright spot, particularly with projectors in the 8,000-12,000 lumen market space. St-Denis said these models, including Christie's new Korus Series, are bright enough to punch through ambient light while providing competitive price points.

And then there's projection mapping. Scalable Display Technologies had a patriotic demonstration of projection mapping on a scaled version of Mount Rushmore at its booth. From monuments to historic structures, projection mapping brings existing spaces to life. "I think it's reinvigorating production," said James Pietsch, director of global accounts, Scalable Display Technologies.

ViewSonic launched its LSD Series of laser projectors in May and had three models on display at InfoComm. Jeff Muto, business line director, ViewSonic, said the lumens-per-dollar ratio has improved with the company's third-generation laser technology, so ViewSonic can deliver a more viable product for schools and small businesses. (And yes, they have a dedicated Golf Mode, too. I sense another trend.)

Muto also admitted the professional projector market is "slowing," but with relatively few projector manufacturers in the industry, there's no reason to abandon the technology. And slowing doesn't mean stopped; globally, this is still a multi-billion dollar industry. So, plenty of sales, new technological developments, new products, and new potential markets and applications. Sure doesn't sound like a dead market segment to me.

Visix launched its EPS 37 e-paper desk sign and professional design services for e-paper displays. The EPS 37 replaces the EPS 27, featuring a larger 3.9x2.3x0.6-inch display that provides better visibility and accommodates more detailed booking information and design elements.

[E-Paper Makes Its Case as Digital Signage Option]

The new four-color sign joins Visix's existing four-color lineup (the EPS 42 desk sign and EPS 74 room sign), all of which now support custom graphic designs. Like all Visix e-paper solutions, these signs deliver exceptional value with wireless operation, 5-plus year battery life, and a 10-year expected service life. Now they're enhanced with four-color graphics that bring brand identity and visual polish to every workspace.

"For years, e-paper has been the smart choice for workspace management because of its low cost, wireless installation, and sustainability," said Trey Hicks, COO and CSO for Visix. The four-color signs (EPS 37, EPS 42, and EPS 74) utilize red, yellow, black, and white to create vibrant branded displays, while the EPS 125 supports sophisticated red, black and grayscale imagery. Organizations can now incorporate photos, graphics, company logos, QR codes, and branded backgrounds into their ePaper displays. They maintain all the sustainability and cost benefits of e-paper while achieving the visual impact previously only available with power-hungry LCD screens.

Let's establish this right away: The ViewSonic LX60HD is a consumer projector. It is not the permanent projector for your boardroom or auditorium. That said, it is a "smart" projector with some features (and a very reasonable $339.99 list price) that make it an attractive option for small multi-use areas, and it's portable enough to recruit for company events or backyard movies.

The LX60HD weighs less than 10 pounds and is smaller than the box from my most recent pair of sneakers. It ships with a power cable, remote control (with batteries), and a quick start guide. There is no lens cap or carrying case, though the recessed lens offers some protection against the errant bump during transport. You'll have to supply any source connecting cables.

This is a fixed lens unit, so there's no built-in zoom and you won't be swapping out a short-throw lens. The LX60HD also has a sealed optical engine, so as long as you don't abuse the thing, you can expect about 20,000 hours of projected content. That equates to 40 hours a week for almost a decade.

The LX60HD has an RGB LED light source, not laser like many of today's projectors, and a single-chip LCD projection system. As far as projected images go, it offers 630 ANSI lumens and can project a screen size of up to 140 inches. With a 1.2 throw ratio, you can fill a 70-inch screen from about 6 feet away or a 100-inch screen from a little less than 9 feet away. That'll work for a presentation or a watch party.

An adjustable foot allows for a slightly higher projection angle, while a tripod hole lets you mount the projector temporarily or permanently. There's also a Kensington lock slot, which can discourage theft for more permanent installs.

Built-In Entertainment

When you first turn on the projector, you'll have to do some basic startup tasks, such as choosing your language and country. After that, you can set up Google TV to provide access to a variety of streaming services. Setup time will be determined by how many streaming services you add and, of course, the speed of your internet connection.

You're not limited to streaming—the LX60HD has an HDMI input, so you can connect your laptop or game system, and a 3.5mm AV port for connecting video cameras or other components. Two USB ports allow you to connect external storage or peripherals like a keyboard and/or mouse.

The LX60HD features impressive auto focus and auto keystone. You can adjust it manually, but I was very satisfied with the results from the projector. There are a handful of color modes and a manual mode to adjust the image to your preferences. The remote's D-pad makes menu navigation fairly intuitive. File management is a bit more ponderous, but you can fill about 4 GB of local storage with pictures, movies, and other media.

Integrated speakers mean you won't have to use external speakers. The two 5W speakers are just OK, but there are two settings, movie or music, to provide some minor audio adjustment. Movie mode provided better spoken word intelligibility in my tests. There's also a 3.5mm jack and Bluetooth, so I was able to connect my JBL Flip 4 portable speaker both ways and get much better audio results.

The Brightness Battle

As regular readers know, I often expose products I'm evaluating to challenging (read: ridiculous) environments to see how they perform. For the LX60HD, I decided to see how well it could project content on a big white wall. In my garage. Right next to a 4-foot window in the middle of the afternoon.

Surprisingly, the projector delivered reasonably well with reasonably bright content. Projecting from about 9 feet away, PowerPoint slides were washed out but readable. Video results varied wildly: Bright scenes from the first episode of Reacher were OK, but dark scenes from Back to the Future Part III were basically unwatchable.

In a more realistic dim room (light enough to see, too dark to read), I streamed Pulp Fiction and it looked good when projected from 6 feet away. The LX60HD also performed well with some of the darker scenes from Timecop at the same distance. (Have I mentioned how much I like the built-in Google TV?) As you'd expect from a low-brightness projector, the LX60HD output looks significantly better as the room gets darker. When I shut off the lights, the images looked really good.

What you think about the LX60HD is directly tied to your expectations. The speakers will not blow you away and the brightness is not very bright. Also, ViewSonic confirmed the fan noise is 40dB, which is certainly not loud, but it is noticeable.

Those are some pretty potent cons—so, what's the professional appeal? If brightness isn't your top concern, the LX60HD might just carve out a niche in your office. If you're using it in a room with limited light, such as a break room or a small multi-purpose space, you should be pleasantly surprised with the results, particularly the Full HD resolution (many inexpensive professional models offer more brightness but less resolution). Also, the integrated Google TV and built-in storage make it easy to access plenty of content without relying on external devices and cables. The LX60HD delivers versatility and pretty pictures at a reasonable price.

Initially co-developed between Texas Instruments and Digital Projection, Digital Light Processing (DLP) technology has been around for more than 25 years. What started as a revolutionary technology designed to bring digital video to commercial movie theaters has evolved into one of the most widely adopted technologies across multiple applications. Today, DLP is a dominant force in corporate, educational, and home theater markets, delivering high-quality visuals with precision and brightness.

[Unheavenly Acoustics]

When DLP projectors were first introduced, they were based on a three-chip design. Each of the three chips was dedicated to one of the primary colors: red, green, and blue. These chips worked in conjunction, converging their outputs to produce a full-color image that was projected onto a screen using a high-powered lens system. This three-chip configuration was a game-changer in digital projection technology, delivering a new level of image quality and color accuracy.

Not long after the introduction of three-chip DLP projectors, single-chip DLP projectors emerged as a viable alternative. This advancement was possible due to the fast switching speed of DLP micromirrors. Instead of using separate chips for each color, single-chip DLP projectors sequentially displayed red, green, and blue images using a single digital micromirror device (DMD). This innovation made projectors significantly smaller, lighter, and more cost-effective while maintaining high levels of brightness and efficiency.

Unique Approach

One key factor that sets DLP apart from other projection technologies is its truly "digital" nature. Unlike Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) and Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCOS) projectors, which rely on analog voltage modulation to control each pixel, DLP technology operates using binary digital light processing. Each micromirror on a DMD chip has only two positions, on or off, a binary approach that provides several advantages.

• Uniform image reproduction. Because each micromirror functions in an identical manner, DLP ensures consistent brightness and uniform color reproduction across the entire image. In contrast, LCD and LCOS projectors, which depend on varying voltage levels to control pixels, may suffer from slight voltage inconsistencies that cause non-uniformity or blotchy images.

• Higher native contrast ratio. The ability of DLP mirrors to tilt at extreme angles results in deeper blacks and higher contrast ratios, making it an excellent choice for home theater enthusiasts and professional applications requiring superior image quality.

• Faster response time. The rapid switching speed of DLP micromirrors minimizes motion blur, making it particularly well suited for fast-paced video content such as sports, gaming, and action-packed movies.

Over the past 25 years, DLP technology has undergone continuous refinement. One of the early challenges of DLP projection was the visibility of a "dimple" in the center of each pixel, caused by the mechanical structure of the micromirrors. Through design improvements, these dimples were minimized and eventually eliminated, resulting in increased efficiency, greater brightness, and improved contrast ratios.

Another significant advancement has been in the pixel density of DLP chips. As demand for higher resolutions has increased, DLP technology has kept pace, evolving from SD to Full HD and now to 4K resolutions.

RGB Pure Laser: The New Revolution

Improvements in color wheel technology have further elevated DLP performance. Initially, color wheels consisted of only three segments: red, green, and blue. While effective, this setup caused a "rainbow effect,” characterized by a noticeable separation of colors and artifacts in the projected image. To mitigate this issue and enhance color reproduction, manufacturers incorporated additional colors such as cyan, magenta, and yellow to the color wheel. This also resulted in brighter imaging.

One of the most significant innovations in DLP projection was the ability to create 4K images using a 2K modulator. Initially, skeptics dismissed this as "faux-K" rather than true 4K. However, DLP’s ability to rapidly switch micromirrors—at speeds of 20 millionths of a second— allowed it to create four distinct pixels from a single micromirror. This was achieved through an optical shifting technique known as a "wobulator."

When tested against traditional 4K projectors, text patterns and fine details confirmed that DLP was fully capable of resolving all pixels of a 4K image. This innovation made 4K projection more accessible and cost-effective, further solidifying DLP’s position in the market.

As technology advances, the latest evolution in DLP projection is the introduction of RGB pure laser technology in combination with single-chip DLP projectors. Traditional lamp-based projectors require color wheels or phosphor-based light sources to generate colors. While effective, these methods introduced certain limitations, such as potential color separation artifacts and mechanical noise.

With RGB pure laser projection, individual red, green, and blue lasers are used as direct light sources. As a result, RGB lasers produce more vivid, true-to-life colors, achieving nearly 100% of the Rec. 2020 color gamut—the widest color space available in consumer displays. Lasers have a much longer lifespan compared to traditional projection lamps, reducing maintenance costs and enhancing durability.

Without a spinning color wheel or high-wattage lamp, RGB laser projectors generate less heat and operate more quietly, making them ideal for home theaters and professional environments. And because RGB lasers don't rely on color wheels, the risk of color separation artifacts is completely removed. That means no more rainbows.

Looking Forward

Over the past 25 years, DLP technology has undergone remarkable advancements, making it one of the most versatile and widely adopted projection technologies available today. Looking ahead, we can expect even greater innovation. For example, as consumer demand for ultra-high-resolution content grows, we may see even more refined implementations of 8K and beyond.

Potentially, DLP could be integrated with emerging display technologies like microLED to enhance brightness and contrast. AI-enhanced image processing, based on advanced machine learning algorithms, could be used to optimize real-time image enhancement, improving clarity, sharpness, and dynamic range. Beyond projection, DLP's rapid-switching micromirrors are being adopted for other applications, including 3D printing, Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) systems for autonomous vehicles, and advanced medical imaging.

[Short-Throw Projectors Offer Advantages in the Classroom]

With so much potential for growth, the future of DLP technology looks brighter than ever. Whether in projection systems or entirely new fields, its core principle of high-speed, high-precision light control continues to open new doors for innovation. As the demand for immersive and high-fidelity visual experiences grows, DLP is well-positioned to remain at the forefront of the industry for years to come.

But a classroom may be laid out one way, and an instructor may come in and want to change the layout,” Shimonishi said. “Our partnership with Artome integrates our award-winning VMZ Series projectors with Artome’s new PT-VMZ-AVCART, which includes a space for VMZ projectors—any model—to be mounted inside. The cart features built-in speakers, subwoofer, and controls—pre-programmed and pre-wired for Panasonic projectors.”

In a recent conversation with AV Technology’s Cindy Davis, Sharp senior vice president, and general manager Mark Quiroz shared his vision for Sharp in the coming year, insight on which verticals have the greatest potential for growth in the broader display market, and thoughts on how display manufacturers can best support both end users and integrators.

It’s widely accepted that the pandemic fundamentally altered how we interact with technology, but according to Quiroz, we have now reached an inflection point in our desire—and need—to return to in-person experiences. When it comes to displays, he explained, this shift is particularly apparent in the corporate and retail spaces.

“I'm particularly excited about the rebound of commercial real estate; it's been in a tough spot and display has suffered from that downturn,” he said. “But as folks are coming back to the office, it's going to be about getting the right technology so they can work more productively in a more hybrid type of environment.”

“And everybody thought that [online shopping] was going to be the end all be all, but I think folks are still looking for great experiences within the retail environment,” Quiroz continued. “That, then, raises the bar on what that experience needs to be, because it has to compete with a very efficient way of buying and trading goods. So, that's where the opportunity to deliver these incredible in-store, brick-and-mortar experiences becomes critical for retailers. How do you do that? Whatever you need to communicate—you deliver through visually striking displays.”

Yet despite this mounting need—all the cutting-edge display technology in the world is useless if it’s not made with the integrator and end user in mind. Fortunately, the experts at Sharp are in vanguard when it comes to thoughtfully designed and deployed displays.

“It's about understanding the needs of both communities; you want to make things very simple,” Quiroz said. “Focus on the solutions and tools to be able to manage, deploy, and operate display fleets. We need to make that easier, because it's a challenge going from hanging one single panel to deploying a custom project where it's basically a mini construction project. So, the ability to support those communities with access to engineers, R&D, and so forth on a real time basis—that's really important.”

And finally, what is Quiroz most excited for in 2025? In a word—dvLED.

“I came in at its inception, when it was really starting to take—six or seven years ago—and now the applications are starting to widen and we're at the knee of the curve where it's growing gangbusters,” Quiroz said. “I mean, there's a reason why you see consolidation and investment coming into the display space: They see that there's an opportunity, and that really excites me. So, I do think 2025 is going to be a key year for that.”

Kevin Christopherson, director of Product Marketing at Sharp Imaging and Information Company of America recently sat down for a conversation with AV Technology’s Cindy Davis. They discussed the joint venture with projection powerhouse NEC Display Solutions, the introduction of and potential applications for Sharp branded projectors, as well as what’s coming up for Sharp in 2025.

When Sharp entered a joint venture with NEC in 2020, both organizations were already at the forefront of their respective product categories. In Christopherson’s opinion, these two complementary companies coming together made perfect sense—each providing much-needed technological resources and expertise to the other.

“The great thing about it is all that heritage, all that technology, and, most importantly, all the people that have made those product lines stand above the rest over the years—those all came along with that joint venture,” he said. “From development to marketing, product development, and R&D—all those folks are still working on these products as we transition from the NEC brand to the Sharp brand.”

As a result of that partnership, Sharp recently unveiled several new (and now award-winning) projector models—the XP-P, XP-X, and XP-A Series—combining NEC’s 35 years of experience in the projection space and Sharp’s cutting-edge advancements in display solutions. 

“InfoComm 2024 was a pivotal point in our joint venture. That was the first time we were showing Sharp-branded projectors.” Christopherson continued, “These are completely sealed solutions—filter-free with no lamps. They're laser-based units, and the benefit to our users is that they are maintenance-free. We have an adjustable Zoom—a motorized zoom focus lens on the P Series. You move up to the X Series and you're going to get a gamut of six different lenses depending on what type of application you're putting it into.”

And while LCD and dvLED displays are a flashy, eye-catching solution for some applications, the potential for projection is limited only by the imagination. From the boardroom to the classroom and even the cinema—Sharp projectors provide 4K image quality at virtually any scale, with innovative features that allow the end user to flex their creativity.

“Our products can achieve 3D mapping, so you can map a projected image onto whatever you're doing,” Christopherson said. “We have museums projecting onto dinosaurs and doing immersive shows with that type of technology. It’s very cool to see. You can edge blend the units—use multiple units together. There's a lot of flexibility across the lineup.”

Finally, while a busy 2025 will see the release of several exciting products from Sharp, according to Christopherson, the big story for the coming year is continued brand migration.

“Over the next nine months, all our products across the entire portfolio—and I'm not just speaking about projection, but LCD as well as direct view LED—will migrate over to the Sharp brand,” he said. “It’s kind of a journey as far as this joint venture goes; getting us all under the strong Sharp umbrella and moving together under one brand is important, and it gives clarity to the customer moving forward.”

Sharp has launched its brightest LCD-based projector to date: the XP-A201U-B. This projector creates a large color space and maximum color reproduction for an enhanced viewing experience. This model is the latest product in Sharp's X Series, following the launch of the XP-X141Q in September. It features 4K Ultra High-Definition resolution with high brightness, designed for areas like corporate conference rooms, higher education classrooms, museums, and more.

The X171Q laser projector displays 9.2 million visible pixels at 16,500 lumens, bringing presentations and content to life. [Short-Throw Projectors Offer Advantages in the Classroom]

With almost DC-P3 color space, it produces vivid reds, delivers enhanced color performance and projects images that are remarkably lifelike at 20KLm brightness and WUXGA resolution. “The small footprint defies the high brightness delivery at low energy consumption”, said Gerd Kaiser, senior product line manager large venue projectors at Sharp/NEC. “As with all our new product launches, this Sharp branded model is deeply rooted in NEC’s legacy of quality, sustainability and projection expertise. As such, with the wide color space, high brightness and resolution, and the sealed, filterless optical engine, the A201U is ideal for everyone who needs a new solution for museum projection, immersive projection mapping, corporate or university auditorium use.”

Projector manufacturers invite teachers to get closer to the action—or at least the lesson plan—with short-throw projectors. As the product category implies, short-throw projectors are positioned closer to the screen than a traditional or standard-throw projector. That means they’re a better choice in tight quarters, but that’s not the only advantage these projectors provide for educational facilities.

[The Integration Guide to Education 2024]

"The traditional reason for a short-throw projector was to support interactive whiteboards," recalled Bob Wudeck, senior director of business development, BenQ North America. "In 2024, the primary reason for short-throw projectors is to enable a larger screen in a smaller space. Emerging markets like simulation, floor projection, and immersive rooms require short-throw projectors to enable larger images without having to mount the projector so far back that it is impractical."

Billy Harrison, product manager, mainstream video projectors, Optoma, agreed that short-throw models are great for space-constrained environments. “The number one reason short-throw projectors have grown in popularity is due to the big image they project from a short distance,” he said.

Another selling point is that short-throw projectors do not require special installation considerations beyond those needed for standard-throw projectors. According to Yann Sablayrolles, product manager projector, Panasonic Connect North America, short-throw units are generally easier to install and maintain.

[Where Are We with Hybrid?]

"They can be mounted on ceilings, desktops, or carts—and can be placed closer to the display surface while still creating the same size image," he explained. "They offer greater installation flexibility with minimal cost increase and no sacrifice in performance or features. They are incredibly good space savers."

Educational Applications

Experts agree that short-throw projectors can be effective in classroom environments. From a practical standpoint, short-throw units can accommodate installations where there isn't enough distance to place a standard-throw projector or there are obstructions in the ceiling where the projector would typically be placed, according to Ryan Pitterle, senior project manager, projectors, Sharp. But there are other benefits as well.

“Generally speaking, when you’re in a smaller classroom where the professor and/or students will be moving around a lot within the classroom, short-throw projectors are the best option because they have specific features to reduce exhaust noise and unwanted distractions when students are seated close to the projector,” Sablayrolles said.

“Short-throw projectors require significantly less throw distance and are less prone to shadowing from participants in the room,” added Harrison. “When using standard-throw projectors, participants and viewers moving close to or in front of the projector can create a shadow, which is undesirable and distracting for others.”

“One key factor is installation volume, which refers to the total space needed to create an image of a certain size," explained Daniel Oey, senior IT product manager, LG Business Solutions. "Flat-panel displays and direct-view LEDs have a thin installation volume, as they are mounted directly to the display surface. However, standard-throw projectors will need a larger installation volume, as they need to be placed at a distance away from the display surface to create a larger image.

"While an older option, projectors are still a highly relevant member of a portfolio of display solutions. For larger images, projectors are often more cost-effective from an image size perspective," Oey continued. "Ultimately, short-throw projectors are a good choice for both classrooms and larger lecture halls, because they offer a good balance of smaller installation volume, image quality, brightness, and cost effectiveness."

Opinions on lecture hall use are more mixed. Mia Shen, senior business line manager, ViewSonic, said short-throw projectors "might not always be the best choice due to the limited throw distances and potential brightness limitations." Pitterle added that large lecture halls often require screens that are larger than the maximum size supported by most fixed lens short-throw projectors. But Wudeck said new 4K short-throw laser projectors are “especially well-suited to lecture halls, enabling 300-inch screens with Rec. 709 color accuracy that can replicate complicated organic colors in fine detail for science and art lecture halls.”

Lens Options

Are there limits with lens choices? That depends on the projector model you choose. “Some short-throw projectors come with fixed lenses, which provide advantages in projector size and cost, while other projectors have the ability to change lenses for more flexibility, but typically results in a bigger and more expensive projector,” Oey said.

"While there’s a cost associated with interchanging lenses," Sablayrolles acknowledged, "this is a good option for those looking to use their projector in a variety of settings and applications."

Generally, Shen said short-throw projectors have fewer lens options compared to traditional projectors. If your short-throw projector has a fixed lens, Shen said there is less flexibility in adjusting the throw distance, which could be a limitation in larger or irregularly shaped rooms. Pitterle advised installers to pay attention to the throw ratio, which is the throw distance divided by screen width.

Projectors usually fall into three categories based on their throw ratio. While estimates vary between manufacturers, Oey said standard-throw projectors generally have a throw ratio greater than 1.0, while the throw ratio for short-throws is around 0.75-1.0 and ultra-short-throws have a throw ratio less than 0.5.

Wudeck differentiated between the three most popular types of short-throw projectors. "Home theater ultra-short-throw projectors are placed close to a wall and have integrated speakers, while immersive projectors for museums and simulation rooms are designed for very large images and blended together," he said. "The traditional classroom models typically have a maximum image size of 130 inches and are designed for whiteboards."

Yes, ultra-short-throw is another subcategory, with projectors that can be placed even closer to the screen, often from only a few inches, while providing a full-sized image. “The difference between short-throw and ultra-short-throw is the lens throw ratio and lens design,” Harrison explained. “Short-throw projectors use a standard front-of-the-projector lens that can be easily identified by the round protruding lens."

"Ultra-short-throw projectors can create large images from very short distances, resulting in a small installation volume and almost eliminating the possibility of shadows," Oey said. "They achieve this by using powerful aspherical lenses. However, as a result they are typically more expensive. Also, because they are placed close to the display surface, the projected image is sensitive to projector mount alignment and display surface flatness, which can cause image distortion."

Considerations and Limitations

Short-throw projectors do not require a special kind of screen, so standard drop-downs or fixed-frame models are just fine. And for a traditional classroom, Wudeck said you can use any screen or whiteboard made in the last 20 years. "For environments with high ambient lighting, a short throw projector can be used with an ALR [ambient light rejection] screen," Harrison advised. "ALR screens reject ambient light back into the environment, allowing for bright and crisp images even in bright rooms."

Any technology has its limits, and there are some disadvantages associated with short-throw projectors, staring with less installation flexibility. As Shen explained, the limited throw distance means these models are generally not suitable for very large rooms or lecture halls where the projector needs to be placed far from the screen.

[Sustainability: A Pro AV Progress Report]

Harrison also emphasized the need to mount or place the projector close to the projection surface. “For example, a mainstream short-throw projector like the ZH450ST can generate a 100-inch image with a throw distance of 3.6 feet and an even larger 120-inch image from a longer throw distance of 4.3 feet,” he explained. “Short-throw projectors cannot be used from the middle or the rear of the room, as the projector image size will be too large and have poor focus.”

In applications where large screens are needed, a short-throw projector may not suffice. "Traditional fixed lens, short-throw projectors sometimes have limitations to the maximum screen size supported,” Pitterle said. Go bigger than that limited image size and your image can lose focus on the edges, Wudeck added.

There is also the issue of no (or very limited) zoom capabilities. As Harrison observed, most Pro AV short-throw projectors with fixed or interchangeable lenses are limited to 1.15x zoom. “This is the nature of short-throw lens projectors overall and not a limitation of any particular projector company,” he noted.

That lack of zoom means installation can also be challenging, due to the precision needed to square the image on the screen. As Wudeck noted, if your projector doesn't offer lens shift and/or zoom, your projector has to be mounted exactly right to properly fill the screen. "Most mounts will provide sufficient adjustment," Pitterle added, "but professional installation is still recommended."

Sablayrolles said a short-throw projector body can often be bigger and heavier than a traditional projector because of the size of the lens, and he also warned about potential sensitivity to screen imperfections. “It’s really important that you have a perfect screen or wall to project on,” he noted. “Since the projector is placed close to the screen, it is much easier to see imperfections/issues with a screen while using a short-throw projector.”

And, of course, there's cost. If you want that extra flexibility, expect to pay for the convenience. "Short-throw projectors are often more expensive than traditional projectors with similar specifications," Shen confirmed.

Check Your Distance

Ready to install your short-throw projector? According to Sharp's Ryan Pitterle, you can mount it to the ceiling using a standard ceiling mount or with a wall mount attached just above the screen. For a less permanent solution, you can place it close to the screen on a pedestal or table. Some manufacturers even offer custom mobile projector carts, such as the Epson ELPCS01, which is designed exclusively for its PowerLite 810E/815E 3LCD short-throw projectors.

If you need help to determine the best configuration of the room and projector placement, there are several online tools that can help. For example, Panasonic Connect offers a Throw Distance Calculator and Optoma has its own Projection Calculator. Both sites let you calculate projected image size, projection distance, and more based on specific models and lenses.

In a release dated July 31, 2024, Panasonic Connect announced that it has reached an agreement on a strategic capital partnership with ORIX Corporation in regard to the company’s projector business and related operations. The two companies plan to establish a new company to operate the business aiming for continued growth. This decision was made today at the board of directors meeting of Panasonic Holdings Corporation concerning the following details.

Overview

Together with ORIX, Panasonic Connect will establish a new company based on its Media Entertainment Business Division (MEBD), aiming for further growth of the business. Regarding the new company, ORIX will hold 80% of the shares, and Panasonic Connect will hold 20%. After the capital partnership, target products will continue to carry the Panasonic brand, and the new company will also use the Panasonic name for the time being.

Since the commercialization of its first cathode ray tube (CRT) projector in 1975, the company’s commercial projector and display business has launched a wide range of products utilizing proprietary device control technology*1. When Texas-based audiovisual company AVSANT was assessing needed classroom technology upgrades at the University of Houston-Clear Lake, one issue quickly became apparent: ambient light.

“Ambient projection is very important in classrooms. Especially if you have a biology class—specific pictures you want to show—that’s very important,” Yohannes Tesfaye, associate director of Academic Computing UH-Clear Lake said.

“This was a problem that instructors had mentioned—having to turn off the majority of the lights and not feeling like they’re being able to give that personable impression to the end users that are sitting in the room,” David Hoyle, vice president of Account Management for AVSANT said.

AVSANT and Draper recommended TecVision XH900X ALR, one of several ambient light rejection solutions the company offers. XH900X ALR is perfect for classrooms and other educational settings where off-axis viewing is important. Unlike many ALR surfaces, it achieves high contrast while still being able to support wide viewing angles.

Rejecting Ambient Light

“ALR is an amazing technology that’s come so far over the last few years and Draper has been a huge part of that in the industry as a whole,” Hoyle said. “By canceling out the lights overhead, it allows you to still have the same clear picture without having to spend an excessive amount of money on [the projector]—trying to go so bright that you get reflection back off of it and create hotspots.”

While ambient light was the main issue, it wasn’t the only one. As Tesfaye and the AVSANT team assessed various classrooms and spaces, an old problem you’ll often find in higher education facilities stood out: they hadn’t considered the importance of the projection screens.

“We noticed that they had some really old projector screens and different pieces,” Hoyle said. “A lot of times they’ll just replace the projector. When we really sat down with the executive team and the different IT teams, we said, ‘You’re not going to get what you’re expecting to get out of it unless we work with a screen manufacturer.’ And our recommendation was Draper.”

With 38 different classrooms plus other technology spaces serving different educational needs, the screen solution needed to be flexible. In some instances, the screen needed to be either suspended or ceiling mounted; in other areas it needed to be wall mounted. The solution: Acumen V surface-mounted screens from Draper. “So far, we haven’t had any problems,” Tesfaye said. “That’s the important thing for us, because the reliability for class is very important. Of course, technology will break, but we’re trying to see how we can minimize that [with] product reliability and efficiency. So, so far it’s very efficient for our classes, so it’s very good.”

Christie has introduce two new RGB pure laser projectors: the M 4K15 RGB and M 4K+15 RGB. Part of the M 4K RGB Series, the projectors deliver 15,750 lumens and are designed for the most demanding applications, including staging and live events, projection mapping spectacles, and theme park attractions.

“Our original M Series projectors, first introduced in 2007, were our most successful line of Pro AV projectors with over 16,000 units sold,” said Joel St-Denis, director of product management, Christie. “Our new models continue the tradition of innovation which has made the M Series so popular, combining ruggedness, reliability, and brightness into a compact chassis.”

Christie has simplified installation and operation by delivering full brightness at 120V or 220V, omnidirectional rigging capabilities, and TruLife+ electronics, which eliminates the hassle and cost of removable options cards. At 83.8 pounds (38.1 kg), the M 4K15 RGB and M 4K+15 RGB are the lightest 3DLP projectors in their class.

The new projectors are compatible with legacy M, J, and Crimson Series lenses and M Series rigging frames for additional cost savings.

With RGB pure laser illumination, the new projectors produce vibrant, bright, and true-to-life visuals that approach 98% of the Rec.2020 color gamut, while operating at a quiet 43 dBA to ensure that the focus remains on the screen.

The M 4K15 RGB offers a 2700:1 contrast ratio and 4K UHD (3840x2160) resolution, while the M 4K+15 RGB offers a contrast ratio of 2200:1 and 4K UHD+(3840x2400) resolution. For applications that require higher frame rates, optional Mirage and Mirage Pro upgrades deliver 4K at 120 Hz and HD resolution up to 480 Hz.

Reading, writing, and resolution? From K-12 to higher education, projectors continue to play an important role in classrooms. Experts from several Pro AV projector manufacturers provided SCN with advice concerning several important projector topics, including laser light sources, brightness, display technologies, and, yes, resolution.

Throughout much of the Pro AV space, it's a 4K world. But is 4K resolution a requirement in today's classrooms? Ryan Pitterle, senior product manager of projectors for Sharp NEC Display Solutions, expects significant growth in the 4K projector market over the next several years, but not necessarily in the education space.

"Most classrooms will not prioritize 4K resolution until more education content becomes available, bandwidth improves, and cost comes down,” he said. “At this point, it’s more important to choose a projector that is 4K ready, meaning it will accept a 4K signal and scale the image appropriately. This will help ensure that your projector is future proof—and as 4K content becomes more readily available, your projector will accommodate that content.”

[History on Display]

For example, Sharp NEC's NP-P627UL projector offers native WUXGA (1920x1200) resolution, but its video scaling supports 4K30 content as well as the 21:9 aspect ratio. Part of the P Series, its laser light source also provides 6,500 lumens.

“4K resolution can provide enhanced visual clarity and detail, making it particularly beneficial for subjects that involve intricate visuals, such as scientific diagrams, maps, or high-resolution images," offered Daniel Oey, senior product manager—projectors, LG Business Solutions USA. With 7,000 lumens and 4K resolution, the LG ProBeam BU70QGA delivers highly detailed images, making it ideal for large or brightly lit spaces like lecture halls. Other features include lens shift, 1.6x optical zoom, built-in wireless, and an integrated camera that aids in setup and positioning.

"As more educational materials, videos, and interactive media are being produced in 4K resolution, having compatible display technology allows educators to fully utilize these resources and provide students with a more immersive learning experience," Oey added. "This level of detail can help students grasp complex concepts more effectively, especially when displayed on larger screens or viewed from closer distances."

However, opting for 4K could open a proverbial can of very expensive worms. "A projector is only one part of the picture, pun intended,” cautioned Eric Adams, manager, visual systems sales engineering for Panasonic Connect. “Having 4K resolution in the projector is useless unless the source is also 4K. A 4K source is useless unless it can be delivered to the projector, so a 4K infrastructure is required.

"All these things cost money—and usually, the viewer in a classroom situation is sitting at a distance where any advantages of the higher resolution cannot be seen, anyway. So, budget is the major driver for classrooms today. The need for 4K will be determined by the school budget more than by the need for the resolution itself.”

Brightness Levels

Speaking of lumens, projector brightness is always part of the conversation. How do you determine the brightness you need? You'll need to consider several factors, starting with the ambient light in the room.

“Most classrooms and education settings require a projector with higher lumens that is equipped for lights-on viewing, so displays are minimally impacted whether the lights are on or off,” said Brian Soto, director of product management for Optoma Technology. “Another consideration is distance and how far away the students are from the projection surface. In larger education settings like lecture halls, where students can be seated further away from the display, a high-brightness projector can ensure that all students can see a consistently clear image, regardless of where they’re situated in the room.”

[Who's Ready for Hybrid?]

Pitterle emphasized aligning projector brightness with screen size—generally, larger screens need brighter projectors. Plus, one consideration that is often overlooked is whether there is another display in the room that the projected image needs to match.

"It's always best to choose to a projector that is as bright as you can afford," Pitterle advised. "There are numerous benefits to running a projector at 70% or 80% brightness, including longer life, constant brightness capability, lower noise, and lower power consumption."

Terrence Boyd, senior business manager, Sony Electronics, also mentioned screen gain, which is the reflective properties of the projection screen. “Screens with higher gain reflect more light toward the audience, allowing for better image brightness," he explained. "Lower gain screens may require brighter projectors to compensate for reduced light reflection."

Content type can also impact brightness requirements, Boyd said. For example, if you primarily display content with vibrant colors, a brighter projector may be needed to ensure accurate color representation. "Conversely, if you primarily display text or static images, a projector with lower brightness might suffice," he added.

Sony offers the VPL-PHZ61, a 6,400-lumen 3LCD projector with Bright View, a proprietary processing technology that brightens images without washing out the color. Plus, a built-in light sensor measures room brightness and automatically adjusts the Bright View mode and other settings around the presentation environment.

Laser Advantages

One of the major developments in projector technology in recent years is the use of laser light sources. "The advancements in laser projection technology have allowed us to pack a lot of horsepower in a very small chassis," noted Remi Del Mar, senior product manager, Epson America.

According to Joel St-Denis, director of product management at Christie, laser has now effectively replaced lamps as the preferred light source in Pro AV projectors. "Laser projection offers many benefits over lamps, including better color reproduction, higher efficiency, and instant on/off," he explained. "Laser-based illumination offers up to 20,000 hours of reliable, virtually maintenance-free operation for a low total cost of ownership. And no one misses changing lamps!"

Complete with laser illumination, Christie's DWU960ST-iS delivers 8,100 lumens and includes a motorized fixed short-throw zoom lens. Part of the Inspire Series of DLP projectors, it also features an IP5X dust-resistant optical engine and 24/7 operation.

“Laser light sources have revolutionized projection as we know it,” Pitterle declared. "It is well understood that laser technology eliminates the need for recurring maintenance in the form of lamp replacements. This saves time and money and lowers total cost of ownership. Another advantage of laser that is not as well known is that laser projectors generally offer more uniform brightness across the entire screen, which gives the perception of a brighter image compared to an equivalent lamp-based model.”

According to Adams, other laser advantages include cooler and quieter operation, “bulletproof” reliability, and the flexibility of 360-degree installation options. Plus, the lower cost of operation translates to a higher ROI.

The Great Debate

While laser light sources have become universally accepted by the projector industry, the great display technology debate of LCD vs. DLP rages on. Sharp NEC's lineup includes LCD and DLP models, and Pitterle said there are applications for both.

"In certain situations where color accuracy is a priority, we may suggest LCD,” he offered. “However, DLP can also be acceptable if the projector utilizes multiple laser colors to assist with color reproduction. In cases where customers plan on using the projectors more than 12 hours per day, we will almost always suggest DLP.”

LCD is Boyd's personal preference. “LCD projectors use liquid crystal panels to selectively block and transmit light. When a pixel is in the ‘off’ state, the liquid crystals block the light from passing through, creating a dark pixel. As a result, LCD projectors can achieve high levels of light blockage, allowing for deeper black levels and improved contrast ratios. This usually means better color accuracy, and increased sharpness for detailed images, especially for static or textual content.”

While it offers higher brightness capabilities, Boyd said DLP technology generates more heat and noise than LCD because of its spinning color wheel mechanism. There's also the "rainbow effect," where some people see bright flashes of color when quickly moving their eyes or observing high-contrast images. And while there has been significant improvement in some models, DLP projectors "may require more calibration and adjustments to achieve accurate color reproduction," he added.

In May, Optoma introduced the Optoma ZW350e. With its DuraCore laser light source, the compact WXGA (1280x800) DLP laser projector delivers up to 30,000 hours of virtually maintenance-free operation—and cuts power consumption by up to 45% compared to its lamp-based projectors. Soto argued DLP has some technical advantages over LCD.

“DLP reproduces more accurate colors and natural images with high contrast, providing a better distinction for image detail, especially when displaying 4K HDR content,” Soto said. “Since DLP technology is based on reflective mirrors, rather than an organic material [liquid crystal display], its image quality does not degrade over time. DLP also minimizes the ‘screen door’ effect when producing images, whereas LCD has space between the liquid crystal pixels, so users can more readily see that spacing.”

“LG uses DLP technology because it is a reliable and high-performance imaging technology,” added Oey. "The sealed system eliminates the need for dust filters and the associated hassle and cost of cleaning filters. DLP projectors have proven their ability to deliver outstanding image quality, whether it be a detailed spreadsheet or an award-winning movie."

Del Mar offered a different take. "There are clear advantages of using 3LCD projectors, such as color output and resolution performance. However, that is not the debate we are seeing in classrooms,” she explained. “Often, schools are forced to choose between projectors and flat panels. Where large images are required or desired, projectors have a clear advantage. You can also project on a whiteboard or wall, so teachers do not have to choose between a display and a whiteboard. With projectors, they can have both."

Feature Checklist

Brightness, display technology, and resolution are certainly cornerstones to any projector purchase decision, but there are plenty of other considerations as well. For example, many projectors offer a choice of lenses. Not sure what lens is right for your classroom? Christie offers a projector lens calculator on its website, which St‑Denis said will suggest a lens based on projector model, screen dimension, throw distance, and other factors.

“When selecting a projector and considering its features, it’s important to keep your space in mind,” St‑Denis advised. “The size of your audience and classroom size, the audience’s viewing distance to the screen, and the type of content you want to display will all impact the features that are best suited to your project. Based on these considerations, you can determine the ideal resolution, brightness, and lens type for your projector.”

While there is a price premium, short-throw projectors offer some advantages in the classroom, particularly for instructors who prefer to stand near the screen during lessons. “Due to the placement of the short-throw projector, shadows on the screen created by the instructor will be greatly reduced,” Pitterle said. “In certain classrooms, ceiling designs or ceiling obstructions make a short-throw projector on a mount attached to the wall a better installation solution.”

Epson recently introduced the PowerLite 810E extreme short-throw display, which can output an 80-inch image from 1 inch away from the wall. “In classrooms today, most students have Chromebooks or computers, so a large image is needed when sharing students’ devices and content for the class to see,” Del Mar said. “The extreme short-throw projector is an all-in-one solution that offers dual speakers, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and other types of integration tools to make installation easy, while providing teachers and students quality images without shadows for impactful teaching.” 

Ultra-short throw projectors can be mounted above or below the screen, but Adams said the biggest advantage is that the presenter can move around freely without creating shadows or "looking down the throat of a high-intensity light source." Panasonic's PT-CMZ50 ultra-short throw WUXGA 3LCD laser projector offers 5,200 lumens and easy installation options.

For projectors in general, Adams also emphasized the importance of mounting flexibility, high reliability, and simple operation. Other experts mentioned projector noise, picture adjustment, and connectivity.

“Consider the projector's noise level, particularly if it will be placed near students or in smaller classrooms," Boyd said. "Look for projectors with lower noise ratings to minimize distractions during lessons.” He also emphasized the importance of keystone correction, a feature that allows you to adjust the projected image to correct distortions caused by the projector's angle relative to the screen, which is particularly useful for ceiling-mounted projectors.

“Offering connectivity options to different devices such as laptops, tablets, or media players is important,” Soto said. “Projectors should also offer wireless presentation functionality for ease of use and more flexibility for the educator, as well as built-in speakers for projecting videos or other multimedia content."

Network connectivity can also be helpful beyond the lesson plan. "From an IT administrator perspective," Oey added, "the ability to monitor and manage a classroom projector remotely using the same platform as other displays that may be in operation around the school campus can help reduce maintenance and support costs."

Mount Wachusett Upgrades to Sony Projectors

Located in Gardner, MA, Mount Wachusett Community College is a two-year higher education institute offering more than 70 diverse degree programs. As the college’s technology expert, Arthur Collins, director of media services and chief engineer of the Media Arts and Technology (MRT) program, was instrumental in specifying, designing, selecting, and installing dozens of Sony’s laser projectors, including the VPL-PHZ60 3LCD model, for the school’s Leominster and Gardner campuses. The hardware was purchased from CCS Presentation Systems of New England.

“The first projector the college installed was a Sony,” he explained. “We selected Sony’s projectors once again because they’re offered at an appropriate price point–and at 6,000 lumens, they are right in the sweet spot. And while brightness is important, ultimately, when faculty are looking at images, color is a big deal to them. I like Sony’s projectors because their color rendition is spot on.”

Collins also praised the Sony’s ease of installation and intuitive use. “As we were rebuilding our Leominster campus, we were under pressure to meet a deadline,” he recalled, “and the Sony projectors did not disappoint us. We just hung them on the ceiling, plugged them in, changed the settings, and we were in business. Similarly, it’s a very simple projector in that you just hit the button and it works. We can’t let the technology get in the way of the classroom, meaning it just needs to work and be easy to use and comfortable from a faculty standpoint—and these projectors are.”

As an Extron programmer, Collins also favors the projectors’ support of Extron, and sets up an HDBaseT-compatible Extron scaler right into the projectors. “With this setup, we get video control and everything works quite well,” he said. “It also offers a cost savings since we don’t need an HDBaseT receiver. We just go right into the projector.”

The college also employs Sony’s professional BRAVIA 55-inch and 65-inch displays, which are used for digital signage in collaborative and communal spaces. “The Pro BRAVIA displays are priced correctly, with a helpful commercial warranty,” he said. “They look good and they’re reliable. They are easy to use—we just take our player, plug it in, and let that go.”

Last week’s InfoComm in Orlando, FL, was another solid outing. Plenty to digest, of course, but here were a few observations that jumped off the pages of my reporter’s notebook.

1) All signs point to a Pro AV recovery.

I’ve been saying this for about a year, but it’s time to put the whole “tradeshows are back” narrative to bed once and for all. This is the third InfoComm I’ve attended in 20 months. During that time, I’ve also been to two ISEs, two NABs, and even an Exertis Almo E4 for good measure. Tradeshows have been back for some time; that’s not news. 

What is news is how well the Pro AV industry’s premier U.S. trade show has recovered from its pandemic-induced tumble, not to mention how the industry as a whole is moving toward blue skies. 

[3 Things Everyone Was Talking about on the InfoComm 2023 Show Floor]

According to AVIXA, the association that produces InfoComm, total registration for this year’s show was 36,639, with 29,325 verified attendees from 115 countries. International attendance accounted for 20% of the crowd. There were also 700 exhibitors across the Orange County Convention Center. Plus, more than 2,000 individuals participated in the extensive educational offerings at the show. Compare that to 19,681 verified attendees and 522 exhibitors from InfoComm 2022 in Las Vegas and there’s one logical conclusion: growth. 

Speaking of growth, Pro AV is on track for a steady state of it over the next five years. Sean Wargo, vice president of market intelligence for AVIXA, expects the Pro AV industry to not only return to pre-pandemic levels, but experience a steady state of modest growth. 

According to estimates shared during AVIXA’s Market Insights Lunch, Pro AV will bring in $307 billion this year, and will add nearly $100 billion more in annual revenue by 2028. A U.S. recession is a 50/50 gamble, but AVIXA researchers feel that if a recession does happen, it would likely be mild and not completely derail Pro AV business. 

Research also indicated most Pro AV market segments will grow over the next five years. Conferencing and collaboration will remain the strongest market segment, with learning, digital signage, content production and streaming, and performance/entertainment rounding out the top five. Two product segments positioned for significant growth are standalone software (11.6%) and control collaboration in-room technology (8.5%). 

2) The projector market is not dead (or even dying).

I know, video walls are all the rage. And yes, they look amazing. I mean, did you see the LG MAGNIT 272-inch 8K MicroLED display? Literally stunning. With displays like this, who needs projectors anymore? 

Turns out, lots of markets still use projectors. And yet, the projector market is … shrinking? During the Market Insights Lunch, AVIXA reported the video projection product segment was expected to drop by 3%.

When I interviewed Wargo, he clarified the numbers. If you remove screens and accessories—including replacement bulbs, which are becoming less common as laser projectors dominate new sales—projector sales are actually growing. In fact, they are “thriving in a lot of sectors,” he said. 

So, things aren’t as dire as recent statistics initially indicate. That makes more sense. dvLED prices are coming down, but it’s still a much more expensive display option. Meanwhile, larger projectors just keep getting lighter and brighter, bolstered by advances in edge blending, while smaller projectors are delivering very good images and value.

Companies like Epson are doing their part to keep projector shoppers happy. Epson had several projectors on display in its booth, including the new PowerLite 810E, its first extreme short-throw fixed lens laser projector with 4K Enhancement technology. The 3LCD projector delivers 5,000 lumens as well as 16:9 and 21:9 aspect ratios, so higher education and corporate spaces can manage the “front row” layout for Microsoft Teams as well as other content. And earlier this year, Draper announced 21:9 screens in several sizes among its projector screen offerings, so you have plenty of projection options if you want to go ultrawide. 

Lies, damned lies, and statistics, as the old saying goes. Considering all the classrooms (particularly higher education), immersive exhibits, and live events, and despite growing competition from other display options, the prospects for projectors will continue to be healthy for quite some time.

3) Videobars are everywhere, even where you might not expect them.

All-in-one conferencing devices popped up all over the show floor. You expect them at certain booths—Hall Technologies, Boom Collaboration, EPOS, Jabra, MAXHUB—they’ve been at this for years. Even Crestron wasn’t a surprise, though its new Videobar 70 and its four(!) cameras could bring this product category to new and interesting places.

What did surprise me was discovering not one but two new videobars at Sennheiser. The TeamConnect Bar Solutions are part of the company’s TeamConnect product line, which already included speakerphones and ceiling microphones, two products that certainly fit within the company’s expertise. 

With four microphones and two speakers, the TeamConnect Bar S is for smaller spaces, while the TeamConnect Bar M, for mid-sized rooms, has six mics and four speakers (not that anyone was worried about the audio quality). The company partnered with Image Engineering, an image quality test equipment manufacturer, to make sure its 4K camera (which touts some AI functionality) could keep pace with the audio tools. 

I guess I shouldn’t have been that surprised. After all, this is not an unprecedented move. Yamaha UC, another company synonymous with professional audio, unveiled its CS-800 video sound bar late last year, and Bose Professional unveiled its first of two videobar options in 2020. 

But this trend tells me two things. First, in today’s environment, established companies are willing to bet on brand extensions that stray from their core competencies. Partnerships, once scorned in public but now heralded to all who will listen, as well as the economic uncertainty that the pandemic thrust upon the industry, have likely helped to pave the way for executive teams to embrace potential new revenue streams. 

Second, videobars are one of the hottest products in Pro AV. It makes sense—an all-in-one solution can be a quick fix for outdated conference rooms, huddle rooms, and classrooms. For the content creator, a premium desktop monitor is the starting point. These monitors should be calibrated for a variety of color spaces, including sRGB for standard broadcast and web distribution, Adobe RGB for commercial art and print, and DCI-P3 for digital cinema and video editing work. The resolution of the digital signage display and the monitor should match to ensure consistency in the content.

As an industry, we often become fixated on the visual when we discuss how to create high-impact displays. We focus on resolution, pixel pitch, and similar technical elements. I would argue that display placement is equally important. The impact of digital signage is more often than not tied directly to display locations. Inside a shopping mall, for example, we suggest installing displays that invite consistent dwell times, such as within a food court, on an escalator, or inside an elevator. There is little benefit in creating content of exceptional quality if your audiences don’t have an opportunity to consume it.

LEDs, at a premium price, are best suited for applications including critical viewing, control room, and premium corporate spaces. Next, think about how content will be delivered to the display, whether it’s through a computer or a media server. LG Business Solutions introduced three new high-definition projectors specifically designed to satisfy the needs of schools, corporate offices, government facilities, business travelers, field sales personnel and more. These new models deliver long operational lifespan and up to 7,000 lumens of brightness for use in sun-lit environments.

According to Tom Carroll, sales director at LG Business Solutions, the three new projectors deliver premium performance at various price points to give technology decision makers more options when selecting a projector.

The new LG ProBeam BU70QGA is the first 4K UHD projector to feature LG’s webOS Smart Signage 6.0 Platform, a powerful platform that simplifies networked content distribution and streaming and offers advanced picture settings such as edge blending, picture-in-picture, and picture-by-picture capabilities. The ProBeam BU70QGA’s edge blending technology allows the user to easily control the luminance of the area where the projected light overlaps and enables the seamless connection of overlapping light from two or more projectors through color correction. Working with an onboard high performance SoC (System-on-Chip), the projector can execute several tasks at once and provides smooth content playback, enhancing user convenience with intuitive UI and simple app development tools. In retail, it is critical to deliver timely and relevant content on dynamic displays. Today, the online and in-store shopping experiences must be cohesive; retailers should treat their brick-and-mortar stores like their website, and vice versa. This is where retailers can lean into outdoor LED displays and a variety of digital tools such as LED signage, self-service kiosks, and on-shelf displays—underpinned by a robust content management system (CMS). 

The first consideration I regularly share with customers is that a variety of digital tools such as LED signage, self-service kiosks, and interactive displays can be tremendously beneficial to retailers looking to provide a unique customer journey—but it is the CMS that takes these tools to the next level. 

Second, a CMS can make or break a business’ ability to fully benefit from its digital signage investments. An effective CMS allows users to develop, organize, target, schedule, and distribute content more quickly and easily. This information is a key component of creating an interactive journey.

Third, in addition to photos, slideshows, and playlists, a cloud-based CMS can pull in content from social media, providing powerful, in-the-moment testimonials as customers shop inside a brick-and-mortar store.

Fourth, automation and AI can help guide content management even further. For example, Panico Salon—a full-service salon and medical spa in Ridgewood, New Jersey—uses heat mapping to track foot traffic.
