The three PDUs comprising the high-amperage 820 Series retain many of the same popular features as WattBox’s original 15-amp 800 Series, including OvrC remote monitoring and resolution; self-healing auto reboot; and control, scheduling, and metering of individual outlets. These capabilities facilitate a smooth transition for systems integrators handling commercial and dedicated theater projects, which often have high power requirements. The 820 Series is designed to meet the demands of these high-power environments while delivering the reliability and functionality WattBox users have come to expect.</p><p>The first two models available in the 820 Series are the WB-820-IPVM-12 and WB-820CH1U-IPVM-8, featuring 12 and 8 individually controlled and metered outlets respectively. Additionally, the WB-820-IPVM-12 and WB-820CH1U-IPVM-8 feature built-in surge protection and power conditioning, which minimizes service calls and safeguards the connected components from damaging voltage irregularities.</p><p>All three power distribution units in the 820 Series are designed with strategically placed outlets and in various orientations to maximize outlet use and installation flexibility. They can be paired with an optional WattBox Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) for back-up power during electrical outages and are compatible with leading control platforms including Control4, Crestron, Elan, RTI and URC. A next-generation Telnet API lets systems integrators program unique features into the system to deploy and monitor multiple WattBox products across thousands of projects.                                 <p>As <a href="https://www.avnetwork.com/news/lg-aceso-converge-to-boost-capabilities-and-patient-experience-on-hospital-tvs" target="_blank">LG Business Solutions</a> prepares to unveil its electric vehicle charger business in the United States in 2024,  the LG 11kW Level 2 AC EV charger model EVW011SK-SN has been certified to UL 2594, the UL Standard for Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment, and to the EVSE Program Requirements for ENERGY STAR, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s energy and performance standard.</p><p>“As electric vehicles contribute to the nation’s clean energy future, using an energy-efficient, ENERGY STAR-certified electric car charger adds to the environmental benefits and cost savings,” said U.S Environmental Protection Agency ENERGY STAR products director Ann Bailey. “If all EV chargers sold in the U.S. met ENERGY STAR requirements, the savings in energy costs would grow to more than $17 million, and 280 million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions would be avoided.”</p><p><a href="https://www.avnetwork.com/news/lg-electronics-set-to-unveil-owner-operated-ac-and-dc-chargers" target="_blank"><em><strong>[LG Electronics Set to Unveil Owner-Operated AC and DC Chargers]</strong></em></a></p><p>The UL certification process tests various aspects of electronic devices to confirm that a product complies with the specified requirements of these safety standards. The UL 2594 listing is specific to AC-powered electric vehicle charging devices and follows a process that includes environmental cycling at extreme temperatures, tests for ground fault protection and circuitry, and other intensive stress tests to verify real-world performance.</p><p>“Achieving UL 2594 certification underscores LG’s commitment to meeting required regulations,” said Milan Dotlich, vice president and general manager of UL Solutions’ Energy and Industrial Automation group. “As electric vehicle demand continues to surge, we are proud to collaborate with those helping fuel EV adoption and working toward a safer, more sustainable world.”</p><p>Certification to Version 1.2 ENERGY STAR Program Requirements for Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment means the LG EV charger saves energy when in standby mode (roughly 85 percent of the time that they are plugged in), reducing energy waste and charging costs, according to the EPA. ENERGY STAR EV chargers use industry network communication standards, meaning they are designed to work with a wide variety of other devices, such as Wi-Fi routers and electric utility energy management systems.</p><p>When it is launched in the United States next year, the 240V AC charger will offer owners variable power output from 3.8kW up to 11.5kW using an SAE J1772-type connector. Owners will be able to quickly and easily set up charging services through their choice of network providers, language settings, speaker volume, maximum current and load management. Audio guides will be available in English, Spanish and French.</p><p><a href="https://www.avnetwork.com/news/sphere-las-vegas-immersive" target="_blank"><em><strong>[Everything We Know about the Vegas Sphere, So Far—A Running Blog]</strong></em></a></p><p>For users, the unit will feature a convenient LED panel that displays charging power, elapsed time, energy delivered, estimated costs and written instructions for proper use.</p><p>LG’s EVW011SK-SN charger is one of the initial models in LG’s charger lineup, some of which offer owners the ability to generate secondary revenue streams through integrated screens with advertising capabilities. The 11kW Level 2 charger is also being evaluated for compliance with California’s revenue metering standards that help assure accurate billing and measurement of power delivery.</p>

                                <p>With its 2024 introduction of its first line of AC and DC powered EV charging stations, <a href="https://www.avnetwork.com/news/lg-aceso-converge-to-boost-capabilities-and-patient-experience-on-hospital-tvs" target="_blank">LG</a> Electronics is set to bring new solutions to the growing electric vehicle charger market.  According to LG Business Solutions USA’s senior vice president Nicolas Min, the line will include Level 2 and Level 3 EV chargers, opening new opportunities to support the electrification of America with independently owned and operated charging stations.</p><p>“LG is committed to delivering systems and solutions to help U.S. commercial customers develop the infrastructure to charge electric vehicles, which is critical to the success of the industry and the nation’s clean energy goals,” Min said. “Our product roadmap supports various use cases to provide a flexible, adaptable family of EV chargers to keep America moving as electric vehicles continue to grow in popularity and capabilities.”</p><p><a href="https://www.avnetwork.com/news/dooh-digital-signage-power-ev-charger-advertising-network" target="_blank"><em><strong>[DOOH, Digital Signage Power EV Charger Advertising Network]</strong></em></a></p><p>The new solutions will help individual businesses take part in the market without relying on third-party owner operators. By giving hotels, restaurants, venues, transit hubs, municipal buildings, and other locations the opportunity to own and operate their own EV charging stations, LG will empower them to set their own rates and ensure enough capacity to meet local demands. </p><p>LG’s initial product line for the U.S. market will include Level 2 AC Chargers with a load management solution and variable current settings enabling 11kW of output power through a standard SAE J1772 connector. The Level 2 AC Charger will be designed for simple wall mounting with an optional stand that enables placement anywhere. Also planned for next year is LG’s first Level 3 DC Charger, a stand-type model with a connected Power Bank that provides fast charging up to 175kW through CCS1 and NACS connectors<em>1</em>. The Level 3 model will feature a large outdoor LCD touch-screen display that can serve multiple functions for various owners and use cases.</p><p><a href="https://www.avnetwork.com/news/sphere-las-vegas-immersive" target="_blank"><em><strong>[Everything We Know about the Vegas Sphere, So Far—A Running Blog]</strong></em></a></p><p>Research released earlier this year by Goldman Sachs and IHS Global Insight predicts that EV sales in the United States will jump from 9 percent of total vehicle sales in 2023 to 20 percent in 2025, “and reaching a stunning 50 percent of total new vehicle sales by 2030,” Min said.  “The need here cannot be overstated, and everyone has a role to play from drivers and energy producers to local governments and businesses of every size. By providing more options, LG will increase competition and innovation in the market to the benefit of drivers, businesses and society at large.”</p><p>The new LG chargers coming next year will feature LG software to enable integration with other LG infrastructure elements including digital display networks. Some models may offer additional revenue opportunities through included digital displays that can present third-party advertisements.</p>

                                <p>Any good AV integrator takes pride in building robust, reliable systems. With the right training and experience, it’s likely that they’re able to solve any problem that comes their way. But while AV pros may have the chops to design, integrate, and troubleshoot complex systems, one element remains beyond their control: the quality of the power at their client sites.</p><p><a href="https://www.avnetwork.com/news/executive-qanda-keep-it-clean" target="_blank"><em><strong>[Executive Q&A: Keep It Clean]</strong></em></a></p><p>Considering the monetary value of the systems AV integrators install—and the fact that electronics function best when power is consistent—this is no small issue. Recently, SCN sat down with several power management manufacturers to discuss their latest solutions that not only address this challenge, but also make it easier for AV integrators to continue to provide the reliability their clients are seeking.</p><h2 id="remote-control">Remote Control</h2><p>The need for remote monitoring and control of power management systems have driven these systems to the network, either in the form of intelligent systems that operate locally or those that can be accessed in the cloud.</p><p>Jeff Mackey, CTS-D, is senior sales engineer at SurgeX, an AV power protection and surge elimination solutions developer known for its Squid line of power management systems. The company recently released SurgeX Connect, a cloud-based power management and monitoring software solution. Mackey noted that this level of convenience has become a necessity for both AV integrators as well as their clients.</p><p>Mackey observes that oftentimes when a system fails, a simple reboot is the fix. Rolling a truck to reboot a client’s system is time-consuming and expensive for AV integrators, and the client remains offline while they wait for the technician to arrive.</p><p>“If it’s IP-enabled and we can reach it through the cloud-based service, we can do that in a matter of minutes,” Mackey said. “It’s a quicker uptime for the client, which is the primary thing, and we’re not wasting [a lot of] manhours to do that.”</p><h2 id="the-cloud-debate">The Cloud Debate</h2><p>TRENDnet, a networking and surveillance solutions developer, recently introduced the TPI-06, its first networked power distribution unit (PDU). When utilized with TRENDnet Hive, the six-outlet rack-mounted PDU can control, manage, and monitor devices remotely.</p><figure class="van-image-figure pull-right inline-layout" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' style="max-width:3000px;"><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:49.03%;"><img id="men5Mhs8nD47FDyKefaSt7" name="TPI-06.png" alt="TRENDnet TPI-06" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/men5Mhs8nD47FDyKefaSt7.png" mos="" align="right" fullscreen="" width="3000" height="1471" attribution="" endorsement="" class="pull-right"></p></div></div><figcaption itemprop="caption description" class="pull-right inline-layout"><span class="caption-text">TRENDnet’s new TPI-06 networked PDU can control, manage, and monitor devices remotely. </span><span class="credit" itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: TRENDnet)</span></figcaption></figure><p>Evan Davis, senior manager of solutions engineering at TRENDnet, noted that solutions like these enable AV integrators with a wide client base to streamline monitoring and management remotely. The cloud brings all of these clients into one interface—and once again, there is no need to roll a truck. “You can have PDUs located throughout multiple customers powering multiple types of equipment, and have custom alerts, different management capabilities, and different scheduling for all of these customers,” he added.</p><p>Cloud-based power management offers considerable convenience, acknowledged Peter Cook, vice president at <a href="https://www.avnetwork.com/news/juice-goose-unveils-its-latest-power-line-protection" target="_blank">Juice Goose</a>, a power management solutions manufacturer. It provides remote access to power management solutions as well as other devices.</p><p><a href="https://www.avnetwork.com/news/cloud-power-decisions-decisions" target="_blank"><em><strong>[Cloud Power: Decisions, Decisions]</strong></em></a></p><p>That said, Cook argues that one can suffer from cloud overload: An AV control system may be accessible via one cloud, while a power management system may require administrators to log into another. “Our philosophy, in terms of IP-based or web-based power control, is that we want to integrate with other people’s platforms, so we want to integrate with Crestron or Q-SYS,” he explained. “Or, if it’s a government facility or a large university, they’ve got their own established platform or cloud and we integrate with that—as opposed to creating our own platform, which then has to mesh with something else, and you’ve got different sets of buttons to do different things.”</p><p><br></p><h2 id="installation-considerations">Installation Considerations</h2><p>The NEXSYS power management platform by Middle Atlantic Products, a Legrand|AV brand, unites PDUs and UPSs with a common design. The platform is also compatible with Legrand’s RackLink remote monitoring and control technology, and the UPSs feature individual outlet control.</p><p>From a hardware perspective, NEXSYS UPSs were designed to facilitate installation, according to Nyron Kahrim, product manager at Legrand|AV. The units come pre-assembled and ready to rack mounted out of the box. He also pointed out the UPS’ detachable power plug provides integrators with more flexibility, especially when they may need to plug it in above the rack.</p><p>“The UPS has to sit at the bottom of the rack because it’s the heaviest piece of equipment, [and] you’re not supposed to add extension cords to a UPS to power it up,” Kahrim explained. This solution enables integrators to switch out to a longer power cord—as long as it meets spec—to reach the plug. “Also, if you need a shorter cord for cable management, you can use that as well.”</p><figure class="van-image-figure pull-left inline-layout" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' style="max-width:1800px;"><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:74.67%;"><img id="2Cwd2Ze7w52ypugUkQctDG" name="Ethereal_PR-R13PI_STACKED Web.jpg" alt="Ethereal Modular Surge Protector" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/2Cwd2Ze7w52ypugUkQctDG.jpg" mos="" align="left" fullscreen="" width="1800" height="1344" attribution="" endorsement="" class="pull-left"></p></div></div><figcaption itemprop="caption description" class="pull-left inline-layout"><span class="caption-text">Ethereal’s Big Dog Power modular surge protectors allow integrators to swap out protection modules, rather than replace the entire PDU. </span><span class="credit" itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Ethereal)</span></figcaption></figure><p>Ethereal (formerly Metra AV), a power distribution products manufacturer, offers its Big Dog Power line of smart power management products. This includes a modular surge protection design that enables integrators to swap out surge protection modules when they are exhausted, rather than having to replace their entire PDU.</p><p>This is important, argued Adam Rogers, product manager at Ethereal, because traditional Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV) systems weaken with time. “There are the everyday surges—the air conditioner turns on, the vacuum cleaner turns on, and even the surges from outside of the [building] eat away at that surge protection,” he said. A modular system takes this into account and facilitates upgrades. “It really makes for integrator-friendly and consumer-friendly installations, because no longer do you have to replace the entire system.”</p><h2 id="selling-power-management">Selling Power Management</h2><p>Because the power that any facility receives is inconsistent—and because electronics don’t always tolerate this inconsistency—power management is a necessary component of a Pro AV system, rather than a nice-to-have. “End users spend a lot of money to get these systems up and running," said Shane Roma, product manager at Legrand|AV. "However, the power that these devices are receiving is completely out of the integrator’s control and, more often than not, outside of the end user’s control. For all the time and money that’s been spent on this system, [power management] is a way to ensure that it’s going to stay up and running.”</p><p>There is usually more excitement associated with the fancy LED video walls or innovative audio systems, so power management often gets value-engineered out of the design. Roma encourages AV integrators to discuss power management solutions with customers early on to ensure that their AV systems are robust. “The UPS shouldn’t be an afterthought to a reliable AV system,” he added. “It’s a good way to make sure they don’t see a lot of the power anomalies that happen.”</p><p><a href="https://www.avnetwork.com/news/thank-you-for-your-support" target="_blank"><em><strong>[Thank You for Your Support]</strong></em></a></p><p>For Rogers, AV integrators must also tap into the benefits of selling remote-enabled power management systems, so they can perform simple tasks immediately, such as device reboots. “It’s not even so much about making it easy on you, the integrator, to not have to roll a truck,” he explained. “It’s now become almost mandatory because of the amount of processing that’s being packed into the devices that are powered by our PDUs. When the system is crashing and you have to roll a truck every time—and the client is talking to someone else who has never had to do that because their integrator took care of it remotely—eventually you’re going to lose those clients.”</p>

                                <p>Juice Goose has released its newest feature-rich solution for professional musician, audio technician, and commercial AV installation. </p><p>Part of the Juice Goose RX Series, the RP100-RX uses a proprietary hybrid circuit to limit AC surges to 10 volts between line and neutral and 0.50 volts (500 millivolts) on the ground line. RX performance also includes bi-directional high frequency filtration that reduces EMI and RFI interference. In case of high voltage or facilities wiring fault, power throughput is interrupted.</p><p><a href="https://www.avnetwork.com/news/bring-on-byod" target="_blank"><u><em><strong>[Bring on BYOD]</strong></em></u></a> </p><p>The two function power meter reports in easy-to-read LED numerals the status of power supply and consumption. Users can toggle between volts and amps with a convenient push button on the front of the chassis. Voltage is measured to the nearest 0.10 VAC while amperage is measured to the nearest 0.10 amperes in a range from 0.20A to 25.0A. </p><p>One USB port is provided on the front and one on the back of the chassis. These five-volt DC connections are usable for LED lighting or powering accessories. Both USB ports can also be used to charge accessories including an iPhone or iPad.</p><p><a href="https://www.avnetwork.com/news/viewpoint-welcome-to-the-av-renaissance" target="_blank"><u><em><strong>[Welcome to the AV Renaissance]</strong></em></u></a> </p><p>Other features  the all-new Rackpower 100-RX includes:</p><p><br></p><ul><li><strong>AC Power Receptacles:</strong> One AC outlet is located on the front with nine on the back. The rear outlets are rotated to accommodate wall warts and include extra generous spacing between four of them. </li><li><strong>Power Input:</strong> RP 100-15RX features a 7-foot, 14-gauge power cord with a NEMA 5-15P plug. RP 100-20RX requires a 20-amp receptacle to connect to utility power.</li><li><strong>Tour Class (TM) Chassis:</strong> This professional grade, 7-inch-deep enclosure is formed from a single piece of cold rolled steel. Reinforced mounting brackets and a flush mount top complete a package that's been used to rack mount other products weighing over 200 pounds.</li><li><strong>Two Amperage Options: </strong>For the 15-amp model specify RP 100-15RX.                                 <h2 id="scn-how-long-have-you-been-with-this-company-and-what-are-your-responsibilities">SCN: How long have you been with this company, and what are your responsibilities?</h2><p><strong>Steve Trunkett:</strong> I joined the SurgeX team about two years ago, and since then I’ve enjoyed working with our team of experts to bring light to the relevance, significance, and diversity of power protection solutions for integration projects. Day-to-day I work closely with our sales team to communicate the value of our technologies for all types of projects. My biggest responsibility is identifying how to best support our current and prospective customers with a reliable suite of power management and monitoring solutions, while also nurturing innovation and keeping up with the evolving demands of the market.</p><p><a href="https://www.avnetwork.com/features/diamond-days-for-verrex" target="_blank"><em><strong>[Executive Q&A: Diamond Days for Verrex]</strong></em></a></p><p><strong>SCN: I don’t want you to upset any of your potential customers, but do integrators tend to overlook power management solutions?</strong></p><p><strong>ST:</strong> In my experience, integrators don’t intentionally overlook power management, but since the category is always growing and evolving as the grid faces new demands, there are always ample opportunities to explore and grow product offerings to best protect projects. Due to the evolving and often invisible nature of power quality, many integrators come to discuss how to best communicate the value of power management in their projects. To combat uncertainty, our team partners with integrators to grow their portfolios with the most comprehensive, reliable, and scalable solutions. We encourage them to bring up power management early in conversations with customers; it adds value to the overall wellness of the project when integrators do this.</p><p><strong>SCN: What do you mean by “clean” power and “power conditioning,” and why are they important for Pro AV installations?</strong></p><div><blockquote><p>Technology is often a massive investment, whether it’s for personal or commercial use, and dirty power is not a risk that customers or integrators want to take. </p></blockquote></div><p><strong>ST: </strong>Clean, conditioned power is one of the most important factors for reliable equipment operation. The power that is entering electronic devices—whether that’s collaboration technology, connected home systems, lighting, PCs, or AV racks—needs to be clear of anomalies to prevent the risk of damage and degradation. “Dirty” power caused by voltage irregularities like spikes, sags, and surges can wreak havoc on these devices, causing outages, interruptions, and a shortened lifespan due to overload. Technology is often a massive investment, whether it’s for personal or commercial use, and dirty power is not a risk that customers or integrators want to take.</p><p>When we put a conditioner and other management tools in place, we’re taking the power back. The power conditioners are designed to regulate incoming electricity, remove distortions, and keep consistent power flowing into connected devices.</p><p><a href="https://www.avnetwork.com/news/sustainability-in-pro-av" target="_blank"><em><strong>[Sustainability in Pro AV]</strong></em></a></p><p><strong>SCN: As a native Floridian, I am all too aware of lightning strikes. What can integrators do to minimize damage from power surges?</strong></p><p><strong>ST:</strong> Power conditioning is a great first step to ensure your power is clean, but for frequent surges and outages, true surge elimination is key. Solutions like power strips with a built-in MOV surge protector, contrary to popular belief, are usually not suitable for today’s intricate technology systems or environments that experience frequent hits. They can only withstand a small strain from power events before being degraded or damaged, giving a false sense of security when left in place long term.</p><p>Instead, it’s best to opt for true surge elimination technology. Our Advanced Series Mode protection is designed with patented circuitry to remove surges from the power environment in a non-sacrificial way, ensuring the anomalies won&apos;t degrade the power management device or the connected equipment. For true outages, you can also opt for a solution that includes a battery backup, which can keep critical technologies online with virtually zero transfer time until the power comes back, the generator kicks on, or you’re able to shut down safely. Why should integrators consider adding it to their next proposal?</strong></p><p><strong>ST:</strong> SQUID has been a tremendous addition to our product line because of its unique ability to streamline AV installations and create a proper and intelligent power foundation. It’s the only product on the market that provides AC/DC power protection, boxed network control, and analytical software within a single, compact device. Its combination of four controlled and monitored AC receptacles and three DC banks allow service teams to install equipment with fewer wires and connections, significantly reducing installation time, effort, and cost. For tight, design-forward spaces, it also eliminates unsightly wall warts to integrate with design-forward installations and save space—while also ensuring equipment remains up and running without disruption.</p><p><a href="https://www.avnetwork.com/features/viewpoint-this-is-how-it-is-now" target="_blank"><em><strong>[Viewpoint: This Is How It Is Now]</strong></em></a></p><p><strong>SCN: What are the main considerations when a facility is looking for a UPS?</strong></p><p><strong>ST:</strong> UPSs can offer a variety of power continuity and conditioning features suitable for different environments. UPS devices come in three topologies, each working slightly differently to manage power input and protect connected devices, so decision-makers should consider which most closely coincides with their needs.</p><ul><li><em><strong>Offline/Standby/Backup:</strong></em> Offline UPS systems, also called standby and battery backup UPS systems, remain on standby until a power outage event, then transfer AC power from the power source to the connected device. When an input power failure happens, the built-in battery and the inverter, which converts the battery’s DC power to AC, are activated and connected to the output by the transfer switch. Standby UPS systems are generally the most affordable option and protect from sags, surges, and failures, but they do generally have about a 6-8 millisecond break in power when transferring.</li><li><em><strong>Line Interactive:</strong></em> In this design, the battery-to-AC power inverter is always connected to the output of the UPS, but only redirects the battery's DC path to supply power during an outage. When the power supply is intact, the inverter provides battery charging. Often, this topology also incorporates power conditioning features to equalize sags, surges, and voltage anomalies, but does not provide complete protection against other anomalies like noise and transients. This is a cost-effective solution with a smaller transfer time and more protective features than the battery backup.</li><li><em><strong>Online Double Conversion:</strong></em> Online double conversion UPSs constantly run through their internal batteries and can deliver power with virtually zero transfer time between the power supply and battery in the event of an outage. This design converts the incoming AC power into DC, then converts it back to AC full-time, feeding tightly regulated power to the connected electronics. The topology of online double conversion UPS systems lowers the risk of electrical load loss, and typically features a broad scope of power conditioning including voltage regulation, protection against noise, transients, harmonics, and more, making them especially suitable for manufacturing settings that cannot afford unplanned downtime.</li></ul><p><strong>SCN: What are the short and long-term goals for your company?</strong></p><p><strong>ST:</strong> We’re looking forward to developing new products to support modern power environments and the integrators working to build them. Technology is at an inflection point, and SurgeX is determined to provide the foundation it needs to thrive. Over the next few years, we’re hoping to double the size of our business by making power management more widely understood and more accessible to integrators.</p><p><a href="https://www.avnetwork.com/news/how-fast-is-pro-avs-carousel-of-progress" target="_blank"><em><strong>[Editorial: How Fast Is Pro AV&apos;s Carousel of Progress?]</strong></em></a></p><p><strong>SCN: What new initiatives are we likely to see from your company?</strong></p><p><strong>ST:</strong> As we expand our portfolio and continue to support integrators, we’re excited to launch an online portal to make doing business easier. We’ll also be prioritizing our partnerships with distributors and customers, and look forward to having more conversations about the importance—and the opportunities—power management holds.<strong> </strong></p><p><strong>SCN: How can systems contractors better position themselves to profit from products and/or services you have to offer?</strong></p><p><strong>ST:</strong> Reputation is one of the most valuable assets for systems contractors. A proper power foundation can help fortify and protect that asset. Due to the unseen nature of power, power-based issues within an environment may present themselves in unusual ways, including system lockup or devices reporting errors when they should not be. This chain of events can cause customers to complain or place the blame on the installed equipment, which can lead to unnecessary repairs or replacements. If the power environment is to blame, the same issues may repeat themselves, leading to frustration and doubt in the abilities of the contractor. By relying on our team to help integrators navigate the complexity of the power environment and becoming an expert in power management, these partners can better identify when power-related issues are plaguing installations or, better yet, install the proper solutions from the get-go to prevent issues before they have a chance to occur. </p>

The Liebert Power-UPS Lithium UPS system will be available in Q2 2023 in North America.</p><p><a href="https://www.avnetwork.com/features/scn-hybrid-world-workplace-products-and-expert-tips?utm_source=inline-article" target="_blank"><u><em><strong>[SCN Hybrid World: Workplace Products and Expert Tips]</strong></em></u></a> </p><p>The ENERGY STAR certified Liebert Power-UPS Lithium is an efficient, compact and lightweight 400VA/240W 120V UPS system that utilizes lithium-ion battery technology with an 8 to 10 year expected battery life, significantly reducing on-going battery replacements, and providing users with lower cost of ownership. When compared to traditional valve-regulated-lead-acid (VRLA) batteries, lithium-ion batteries have greater power density, last up to three times longer, recharge faster and can endure up to 10 times more discharge cycles. Its flexible design, and a weight of less than four pounds, allows the UPS to be installed in a variety of configurations, making it a convenient solution for environments where space is limited.</p><p>“The evolution of remote work, education and small business operations has us relying more on digital equipment and technology to support the essential functions of daily life, which only increases the need to protect these devices from power disruptions,” said Ramesh Menon, vice president, single phase UPS and ITS at Vertiv. “The Liebert Power-UPS Lithium is designed to provide economical and long-lasting power protection that helps maintain uptime and reduce the chance of data corruption by keeping important electronics, including critical retail point-of-sale systems, connected and protected.”</p><p><a href="https://www.avnetwork.com/news/scns-guide-to-the-new-year-2023" target="_blank"><u><em><strong>[SCN&apos;s Guide to the New Year 2023]</strong></em></u></a> </p><p>A highly reliable system, the UPS is designed to endure operating temperatures of up to 104-degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius) and is ideal for environments with limited airflow and high temperatures. Stagelink power distribution options include Distributed System Architecture (DSA) and Centralized System Architecture (CSA) options. Powerlink and DSA are both common in large industrial applications. DSA positions the power management hardware near lights, hoists, and audio. It means less conduit, load wire, and terminations. DSA also eliminates concerns related to harmonics and voltage drop, so acoustic isolation and oversized conductors disappear. Finally, DSA has no impact on venue performance and maintenance. Savings come from a cleaner design that minimizes electrical installation and general construction costs. CSA integrates larger panels for a traditional distribution system. With an always-on front-panel color LCD UI, customers can view:</p><ul><li>The current, voltage, and power factor measurement for each outlet. </li><li>Input voltage and total current/power measurement. </li><li>CLASS I (‘billing grade’) measurement accuracy. </li><li>Earth leakage current measurement.</li></ul><p>The new units also feature sequential, immediate or user-configured delayed start-up to minimize in-rush currents that can frustrate entire system power-ups. It is mounted in a rigid steel case with 14 outlets, each rated at 10A capacity. The units feature soldered joints (not crimped) with bus bar construction, providing a long-term reliable service. The new units include a front mounted 2-pole 20A or 32A hydraulic magnetic circuit breaker to guard against accidental overloading, which can result in catastrophic system failure. The 19-inch unit is 1U horizonal rack mountable and requires a single input power.</p><p>Accessories include a Neutrik or equivalent input cable connector of 20A or 32A; a robust cable tie bar for secure cable mounting and/or locking IEC’s can be used. The multi-mount design can be installed in an available 1RU space or at the back or side of the rack for zero-U mounting, providing increased installation flexibility. A supported input voltage range of 100-240VAC, 50/60Hz additionally provides design flexibility for international applications.</p><p>"DC Power Distribution was the first solution of its kind to help integrators reliably solve the installation challenges posed by powering small devices," said Scott Lowder, director of product management for power at Middle Atlantic. "These new additions to the line solve the challenges our customers encounter when systems employ a high density of DC powered components with similar voltages. In direct response to integrator input, these latest DC Power Distribution products provide industry-leading power—up to 300 watts to power as many as 24 devices—in flexible, easy-to-install form factors to suit any application. This expanded offering allows designers and integrators to optimize any system by improving the reliability, performance, and organization of small devices."</p><p><strong>The Bottom Line:</strong> Now featuring higher power capacity and availability for both North American and European installations, the portfolio's new 200W and 300W models deliver the same features as the 45W DC compact and 125W DC 1RU systems, eliminating the clutter caused by a growing number of DC transformers ("wall warts") within AV installations. These solutions provide reliable multi-level protection on both AC input and DC outputs with individual redundancy built in to ensure maximum reliability.</p><p>The new DC Power Distribution models will be on display at InfoComm 2018 at Legrand's booth C3683.</p>

                                <p>Although still in its relative infancy, IP-enabled power management technology has enjoyed significant uptake in recent years, especially in the enterprise and commercial markets. For integrators the technology is perhaps a double-edged sword, offering business opportunities, certainly, but also shaking up the traditional service contract model.</p><figure class="van-image-figure pull-" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' ><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="8TrmFHuw48G8BPuJoUQ8oA" name="" alt="" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/8TrmFHuw48G8BPuJoUQ8oA.jpg" mos="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/8TrmFHuw48G8BPuJoUQ8oA.jpg" align="" fullscreen="" width="0" height="0" attribution="" endorsement="" class="pull-"></p></div></div></figure><p><em>Tripp Lite single-phase monitored power distribution units offer real-time remote monitoring of voltage, frequency, and load levels via built-in network connection.</em>At its core, said John Benz, director of marketing at Panamax/ Furman, which introduced its BlueBOLT-enabled IP power products two years ago, the technology offers a very simple service solution— remote control of a full system or component reboot. “We have estimates from a lot of our integrators that 60 or 70 percent of their service calls can be eliminated by being able to reboot components,” he said.</p><p>“You can give access to the end user so they are able to self-maintain the system without a service call. There’s an auto-reboot on our system, so if you lose an internet connection you can reboot anything you identify as a network component. That makes it self-healing.”</p><p>That back door into the system, allowing the integrator to fix a customer’s problem from an iPhone, has changed the after-sales service business model. “I’m not rolling a truck and I’m becoming more green,” said Dennis Mariasis, AV brand manager for Tripp-Lite, a company that, he reported, offers “the largest array available” of IP power products.</p><p>“As a dealer or installer, I’m starting to sell more service packages, and that’s part of my service package. And if they don’t start to embrace some of these tools they’re going to lose out if they continue to stay in the analog world,” he warned.</p><p>“Why do you need the service guy to pull out his iPhone and push the button when the client can do it himself?” argued Peter Cook, vice president at Juice Goose, which recently launched the rack-mounting iP 1520, offering three individually addressable duplex power outlets. “All customers want to save money. If the integrator can make it so the customer doesn’t need them, I think that’s going to be the competitive advantage. That’s bad news for the integrators; they’re going to have to go and find something else to do.”</p><figure class="van-image-figure pull-" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' ><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="Xz3Vpzp7ciMmdujPUN7HDb" name="" alt="" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/Xz3Vpzp7ciMmdujPUN7HDb.jpg" mos="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/Xz3Vpzp7ciMmdujPUN7HDb.jpg" align="" fullscreen="" width="0" height="0" attribution="" endorsement="" class="pull-"></p></div></div></figure><p><em>The Furman F1500-UPS uninterruptible<br/>power supply offers battery back-up,<br/>road-proven SMP non-sacrificial zero<br/>ground contamination surge suppression<br/>technology, and EVS Extreme Voltage Shutdown.</em>“Historically there’s been an expectation that for an expensive installed system the service should be provided largely within the cost of that system, certainly for a period of time,” said Murray Williams, Middle Atlantic’s product manager for electrical and electronic products. “The ability now for a contractor to provide additional value and service that reduces their overall overheads lets them be a lot more competitive in terms of what they can offer the customer. It’s not inconceivable, for example, to offer an extended service warranty for the system if they pony up a little bit of extra money up front for the networked power management as part of the installation.”</p><p>It’s easier to sell a customer IP power management if they already understand the value of an integrated network, continued Williams, who noted that Middle Atlantic offers a suite of products, RackLink, which provides IP and RS-232 integration. “If they don’t understand the need, it’s quite easy for an integrator to promote the best practice of networked power management—proactive site maintenance, optimized site performance, preemptive fault resolution, reduced system downtime, lowering the overall cost of ownership for a facility.”</p><p>Integrators contracted to keep a remote eye on a customer’s equipment are likely to enjoy a long-term relationship, he added. “The more integrated they are with the customer the more likely they are to remain a customer, and the more difficult it is to be displaced as a provider.”</p><p>Customers must consider a host of other factors when deciding which IP power products are suitable for a given facility, said Shannon Townley, senior vice president at SurgeX, whose Axess products range from entry level applications all the way up to—with the addition of Cervella network management — complex enterprise solutions. The overriding factor, of course: “What is my value versus the cost that I’m being asked to pay?”</p><figure class="van-image-figure pull-" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' ><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="wHYLXSiY6PQwjzprSxia3Y" name="" alt="" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/wHYLXSiY6PQwjzprSxia3Y.jpg" mos="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/wHYLXSiY6PQwjzprSxia3Y.jpg" align="" fullscreen="" width="0" height="0" attribution="" endorsement="" class="pull-"></p></div></div></figure><p><em>Middle Atlantic’s RackLink, a web-enabled power management system that monitors power and temperature conditions from an open architecture that integrates seamlessly with leading control systems, and is compatible with ‘cloud’ based services.</em>Drilling down into product features, Townley continued, “What is the ease of the interface? How will it integrate into system control, such as AMX or Crestron? Are you getting information at the box level, and is it algorithmic information where you have to use some form of a mathematical equation, versus getting data right out of the wall? What can you do outside of the power? Can you take the data and do anything with it?”</p><p>“This is the other piece of remote power control,” commented Benz. “With these platforms you’re able to monitor energy, track usage, get alerts if energy is being used when it shouldn’t, or going over a certain budget. Also, being able to schedule outlets to turn off and on at certain times will eliminate standby power, which is just a waste.”</p><p>Energy efficiency has become a critical issue. “Especially with the enterprise-level companies, they have entire staff dedicated to sustainability,” Townley pointed out. “Their sole initiative is to figure out how to save more energy. That’s right in our wheelhouse. We can go to the integrators working with these large companies and help them see the value in what they’re bringing, and be willing to pay for it. As an integrator, you’ve got the opportunity with these products to go in and sell your value and make real post-integration dollars.”</p><figure class="van-image-figure pull-" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' ><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="mad3f4hznR53oUBkp8impH" name="" alt="" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/mad3f4hznR53oUBkp8impH.jpg" mos="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/mad3f4hznR53oUBkp8impH.jpg" align="" fullscreen="" width="0" height="0" attribution="" endorsement="" class="pull-"></p></div></div></figure><p><em>The Juice Goose iP 1520 can be accessed via internet or intranet communications using ethernet or RS-232 connection, allowing individual AC receptacles to be turned on and off and monitored for electrical current flow.</em>Other businesses will follow the example of the larger companies, said Townley. “The trickle down effect is that after enterpriselevel and Fortune 500 companies start to institute certain initiatives it trickles down to the mid-size companies and, ultimately, the mom-and-pops.”</p><p>While manufacturers generally report that the commercial AV and, especially, enterprise markets were the first to adopt their IP power products, the technology is also gaining traction in the residential market. Many of the telephone and cable providers now offer home automation packages that, in addition to a major security component, typically include power and energy management capabilities.</p><p>The Panamax/Furman BlueBOLT platform, initially aimed at the residential market, is a cloud-based system that allows everything to be tracked, said Benz. “We graph it, we track the energy usage by amps and wattage, we set up alerts and budgets. You can put in your utility rate, for example, so the client can look at how much the system is costing them to run. Then they can set up custom budgets, and if they’re getting close to that it can send them an email. So it’s really powerful.”</p><p>But if that’s overkill for some customers, Juice Goose offers a system with basic functionality out of the box.
