Trade shows are among the most powerful opportunities the AV industry has to connect, learn, network, and advance business relationships. Whether it’s InfoComm, ISE, NAB, CEDIA, or a local conference, these gatherings condense months’ worth of conversations, connections, relationship building, and business development into just a few days, making it critical to make the most of these opportunities.

Trade show floors can be daunting. (Image credit: Mark J. Pescatore)

While exhibitors and event hosts invest months in planning, promoting, and preparing for a successful trade show or conference, attendees must also adopt a strategy for success to make the most of their time and energy—or the event will pass by in a flash, leaving them with overwhelming exhaustion and regret.

Attending a trade show effectively is not about how much you do; it’s about how well what you do aligns with your goals. Preparation, intentionality, execution, discipline, and follow through can be the difference between being busy and producing results or simply feeling busy.

Start With Purpose

Before you even register for the event, outline your objectives for attending, identify your "must have" meetings, connections, or conversations. Define what success looks like or what would constitute a good return on investment. Next, document those clear goals and objectives so you can measure outcomes and identify tangible results afterward. Trade shows reward those who prepare.

Without defined objectives, it becomes too easy to get caught up in the excitement of the event and the frenzy of the crowds, have conversations that are more social than business-focused, attend random sessions, and return home having done a lot yet getting little done. With purpose, every conversation and meeting becomes part of a strategy rather than a coincidence.

Whenever possible, schedule appointments with exhibitors, partners, colleagues, and clients in the weeks leading up to the event. Take advantage of opportunities to meet on the show floor, outside the show, or at a social event. Invite them to meet for a meal or coordinate a time to meet at a hotel lounge. Stay on schedule so outcomes and results become routine rather than random. Planning ahead ensures you’re prioritizing meetings with the people and companies that matter most.

The key to intentional prioritization is to remember the goals and objectives first established during the planning process.

It's also critical to be strategic in meeting planning and to map routes across the show floor to make the most of your time, minimize backtracking, and conserve energy. When scheduling times, it's critical to build buffers between meetings and account for "commute" time between booths. Conversations may run long, appointments can be delayed, crowds will slow movement, impromptu conversations happen, and, most importantly, opportunities arise. Leaving breathing room provides scheduling flexibility, keeps stress levels manageable, and creates opportunities for short, valuable breaks.

Being booked from morning to night may sound productive, but it's not sustainable. Understand and stick to limits. It's OK to have downtime, especially when it boosts overall effectiveness. A few minutes to decompress between meetings or time to rest between the day's meetings and evening activities can dramatically improve focus, engagement, and stamina.

Beyond meetings, plan logistics thoughtfully. Make reservations early and stay at a hotel that balances convenience and value while aligning with predefined objectives. For example, if networking is important, stay at a high-traffic hotel. If social activities are a priority, seek out the hot spots. If recharging outside the show is key, stay at a quieter hotel with ample dining options. Hotels near the convention center also reduce steps and commuting time, offering convenience for breaks when needed.

Prioritize What Matters Most

Trade shows offer more opportunities than anyone can realistically handle. Beyond meetings with exhibitors and clients, there are networking opportunities, educational sessions, invitation-only events, social gatherings, and random conversations, all competing for limited time.

The key to intentional prioritization is to remember the goals and objectives first established during the planning process. This means aligning time allocation with business objectives by scheduling the "must have" activities first. Then, plan the next tier of meetings and activities in order of importance. After that, fill in the gaps with nice-to-have appointments to round out the schedule. Be sure to avoid overbooking or scheduling unnecessary events, especially when they could threaten priorities.

Prioritization isn’t only about business goals. It also pertains to personal effectiveness. Many attendees focus solely on time management, but effective trade show participation also requires managing energy and mental bandwidth. Large crowds, loud environments, and information overload can quickly diminish your ability to engage meaningfully.

Through the #HealthyAV movement, first brought to light in 2024, Brittany DiCesare and I shared a personal experience that organically led to a commitment to being our best at trade shows and conferences, and it gained traction in our industry. It applies to anyone and entails recognizing that professional performance at industry events can be directly tied to physical and mental well-being.

Making good choices to treat yourself well, including eating and drinking in moderation, getting enough sleep, staying hydrated, exercising, and recharging when needed, can be a winning formula for being at your best when it counts the most.

Have Fun on Your Terms

Trade shows are among the few times our industry gathers in person, and maintaining connections and relationships matters. Take advantage of opportunities to have fun and socialize. The trick is balancing that value with your broader goals and priorities.

Evenings at trade shows often bring a flood of invitations: receptions, dinners, meetups, parties, and private gatherings. These events can be valuable opportunities to strengthen relationships in a relaxed setting, but they can also consume a lot of time and drain energy.

Instead of trying to be everywhere, evaluate each invitation with priorities in mind. Which events align with objectives? Which relationships would benefit most from face-to-face time? Where is the greatest likelihood of meaningful conversations?

Selective participation leads to greater engagement rather than rushing from event to event just to show up, make an appearance, and gain little value at high cost in fatigue. The #HealthyAV mindset reinforces this approach. When we treat wellness as part of our professional strategy, we show up better for our teams, partners, clients, and ourselves.

Ultimately, the value of a trade show is not measured by how many steps you log, how many booths you visit, or how many people you meet. It’s measured by the actions taken, knowledge gained, opportunities created, and outcomes achieved. By approaching events with intention, preparation, and self-awareness, success becomes a more predictable outcome rather than a matter of chance.

I’m still a relative newbie to the NAB Show, and in large part, the broadcast vertical. Over the past few years, the Pro AV world has crashed the Broadcast party, so walking the show floor was more familiar this year than I remembered from the last time I was here in 2024.

This is only my second show in person since joining Future B2B. In a sense, I’m a good marker, because if I walked away with one thing that I understood and could use on the Pro AV side of things, that means a good, innovative, and informative show was delivered.

Well, I didn't come away with just one thing. Instead, I walked away with five takeaways.

Broadcast AV is here.

(Image credit: Wayne Cavadi | Mark J. Pescatore)

Convergence has been a big buzzword for the past few years. We see it on our end, teaming with our fellow broadcast publication, TV Tech, to put out the annual AV for Broadcast ebook. We can continue to use terms like convergence to describe the overlap, but it is time to call it what it is.

Broadcast AV.

Sony, Shure, Ross Video, Panasonic, Riedel Communications. These are all huge players in the Pro AV market and they were here in Las Vegas for NAB Show with some of the largest and most filled booths on the floor. Yes, they were showcasing production-quality cameras, switches, and technology of the sort, but this is exactly what corporate AV and higher education wants in today’s office space and classroom. They want live-event production quality and standards inside the conference room. They want hybrid learning to be impactful and inclusive, and that includes similar, if not the same, immersive audio solutions and PTZ cameras used on television sets and in sports production. Is there still more work to be done? Absolutely, but the convergence is, well, converged. Full out Broadcast AV has arrived.

Leave your mark.

Our own Mark J. Pescatore wrote in detail about how impactful the creator economy was on the show floor. Both the Creator Lab and CineCentral were full of inquisitive attendees and inspirational thought leaders from their respective spaces. Whether you are a podcaster, video producer, or social media expert, you are the leaders of the next evolution of where the digital universe is heading and having the right tools and technology for the job is certainly of the utmost importance.

However, the biggest lesson I think Pro AV people can take from the creator economy is how important your brand is. MrBeast was constantly discussed throughout several panels. James Stephen Donaldson, aka MrBeast, is one of the originators of how to go viral and you can link video shorts, microdramas, and much of the current way content is produced back to him. Several speakers referred to it as the "beastification" of content. You want to talk about branding? When your name becomes the description for some of the biggest trends that are out there, you have yourself a high-quality branding and marketing team. Pro AV manufacturers should be thinking the same way. Make your name ubiquitous to whatever product you’re going all-in on and you could be the next Q-tip.

Production is cool.

(Image credit: Wayne Cavadi | Mark J. Pescatore)

I have always been a cinemaniac. And the cool part about the NAB Show is it takes you behind the scenes on how that movie magic comes to life. Along with checking out the mock production sets from FUJIFILM, Sony, Canon, and Panasonic (which were all very fun to watch), I got to sit in on Roger and James Deakins panel, where the dynamic duo discussed how technology can bring movie magic to life and allow filmmaking to tell great stories. It was mind blowing. Roger Deakins is one of the greatest cinematographers of all time having shot many of the Coen brothers films, Skyfall, and Sid and Nancy, while winning a pair of Oscars for Blade Runner 2049 and 1917. It was very technical, and while I didn't understand everything to a T, there was an overlying theme throughout his tale.

The biggest tech take away was not how cool Deakins and his partner in cinema (and wife) James are, because trust me, they are the living definition of cool. No, the biggest takeaway is that Deakins, now 76 years old, has done what Pro AV needs to do to survive the quickly evolving technological landscape: adapt. Deakins first film was in 1977, before there was fancy light tracking (he spoke of going to Home Depot to find bulbs for certain effects). He filmed before LED screens could make an outdoor background come inside and become something magical.

(Image credit: Wayne Cavadi | Mark J. Pescatore)

Whether it was the LED takeover of sets, new lighting capabilities, or the digital age, Roger and James were always open to technological change. A lot of cinematographers are set in their ways, James explained, but Roger was always readily willing to reinvent himself to use the technology when appropriate. Technology, Roger added, has only been necessary to create the world the director wanted. He was very adamant that he doesn’t embrace technology because he likes it; he embraced it because it tells the story of what he was trying to create.

Have you heard? AI is EVERYWHERE.

Yes, AI was all over the show floor. But it was much tamer this year than in the past. The show floor used to be showcasing auto tracking, noise reduction, and other automated features, but this is common place now. It’s like going to buy a car and telling me it has a steering wheel—if your products and solutions don’t have AI doing at least a little something, you’re well behind the curve.

Instead, the show focused more on how AI is learning to make the broadcast space even stronger. I won’t bore you with the details because Mark wrote a very good summation of what I was looking at on the show floor, so be sure to check out what he had to say.

Sphere outdoes itself every time I’m there.

OK, this was more NAB Show adjacent, but certainly Pro AV overload. I got out there a night early and got to see Phish in Sphere. If you follow our running Sphere blog, you know Mark and I have been in there a few times and have seen quite a few different things.

I can honestly say each time it gets better. This time Phish partnered with Moment Factory and Sphere Studios to create a digital canvas of mind-blowing content. Each song told its own story, giving them an opportunity to dive deep into what could be done on the world’s largest LED display. Check it out for yourself in my compilation video above.

Technology advancements have enabled products and solutions to be scaled in size and price, making them available for use in corporate, higher education, government, museums, and many other vertical markets that otherwise would not have had access to broadcast quality.

For the first time, AV Technology accepted entries for Best of Show Awards at the NAB Show. As always, our judges are experts in the product categories we have chosen for them to evaluate and remain anonymous to the manufacturers.
Looking to make a statement within a trending area of commerce and entertainment, the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) decided to move their headquarters from Dupont Circle to a high-traffic corner on Washington D.C.’s South Capitol Street in the trending Navy Yard. As the premier organization for the nation’s radio and television broadcasters, its new home needed to be more than just your average headquarters.

Partnering with LG Business Solutions, technology solutions provider Diversfied, and audiovisual consultant Miller, Beam and Paganelli, every part of the space was designed as an opportunity to showcase the latest in broadcasting technology, cementing NAB as a true leader and innovator in the space. Located within a 118,000-square-foot, 10-story building, owned by its own 1M Properties, NAB’s new headquarters occupies five-and-a-half floors. The convenient location is only one block from the Navy Yard-Ballpark Metro Station, and provides easy access to Capitol Hill, Nationals Park (home of the Washington Nationals), and two interstates.

John Paganelli (Image credit: Miller, Beam and Paganelli)

“They already had in mind that they wanted LG as their design partner so that made life a little bit easier,” said John Paganelli, principal at Miller, Beam, and Paganelli. “With that, they wanted to use the headquarters to showcase new technology and be cutting edge. Teaming with LG, we looked to them to see what new technologies they had and what would be exciting and different, and that’s how we came up with some of the concepts that we did.”

Visual Statement in the Lobby

When entering the first-floor lobby, visitors are greeted by a 20-foot-high, 22-foot-wide 2mm pixel pitch LG LED curved video wall, which not only serves as a statement piece for showcasing broadcast history and content but is visible to passersby on the street. But this is just a preview of what awaits visitors in NAB’s main lobby on the 10th floor.

Michael Tow (Image credit: NAB)

“Once you step off the elevators, the first thing you see is six transparent LG OLED screens,” said Michael Tow, NAB senior vice president, information technology. “They were cutting edge when we bought them two or three years ago and they still are now. LG was actually showcasing this same transparent OLED technology at NAB Show in April.”

[Rust Never Sleeps ... and Neither Do Display Manufacturers]

The 2x3-panel video wall, comprising six 55-inch transparent OLED panels, can operate as one immersive canvas or be divided into six separate screens running content simultaneously. Due to the transparent nature of the screens, visitors don’t miss out on the expansive city view of Washington, DC, including breathtaking views of the Washington Monument and other iconic landmarks. The video wall is also accompanied by vertically mounted, 86-inch LG Ultra-Stretch displays that are ideal for sharing meeting information, company updates, and other internal communications.

The first-floor lobby features a large LED curved video wall that is visible from the street. (Image credit: NAB)

As visitors continue through the lobby, they are greeted by the NAB Broadcasting Hall of Fame video wall comprising five ultra-narrow-bezel 55-inch 4K UHD LED displays in a 5x1 configuration, taking visitors on a colorful journey through broadcast history. The interactive display allows visitors to learn about past Hall of Fame winners and listen to audio soundbites or videos from their induction ceremonies.

Throughout the headquarters space, NAB wanted a continual nod to the industry’s past, present, and future to be a main design theme, including “speaker box” treatments for several meeting room windows, “countdown” graphics marking floor numbers by the elevator doors, broadcast icons on the bathroom doors, and rooms featuring light-up “on-air” signs. These tributes to the old age of radio combine the past with the present, as they are juxtaposed with the modern architecture and technology within the space.

Michael Burnstein (Image credit: Diversified)

With a display network of this size and quality, NAB also had to ensure the content was produced at the same level—and relied on design agency Bluecadet for high-quality, engaging content. “The content is really nice,” said Michael Burnstein, vice president with Diversified. “It’s sharp, the production value is really high because it’s NAB. When you walk into a normal office of their size, the production value is not nearly as nice as theirs.”

Workspace Technologies

Another touchpoint is the 5,000-square-foot multipurpose room, also located on the 10th floor, which features a bezel-free 1.88mm pixel pitch, 6-foot high, 32-foot wide UHD LG LED video wall. Almost every room within the headquarters is outfitted with digital displays, including 10 executive offices and 12 team rooms that each house a 43-inch LCD display. (The CEO Team Room includes the 65-inch 4K UHD model.)

Displays can also be found as visitors exit the elevators on each floor, providing NAB the opportunity for continued messaging and brand awareness throughout the building. Additional conference rooms throughout the headquarters have also been outfitted with 4K UHD displays, including the Gordon H. Smith Conference Room and the Edward O. Fritts Conference Room on the fifth floor.

Almost every room within the NAB headquarters is outfitted with digital displays. (Image credit: NAB)

Within two project rooms and the Conventions Open Team Room, 65-inch LG Interactive Digital Boards give employees the opportunity to save and share meeting information, present content, edit on screen, and utilize collaboration options without a PC. Everything from the fitness center to the café is outfitted with LCD or LED displays, making it feel like innovation is truly just around every corner.

Bringing this much technology online, especially new technology that had never been seen beyond trade shows, provided a challenge for all involved, from figuring out what technology was going to be provided to dealing with delays due to how “of-the-moment” the technology really is. This also presented challenges when it came to mounting, with custom mounts needing to be designed and configured.

The pandemic stressed many organizations, including NAB, which suffered from a less-than-ideal move into its new headquarters in March 2020. Staff did not begin working within the space until Summer 2021, on a voluntary basis, and only recently began utilizing it on a more permanent basis as employees returned to the office three or more days a week in early 2022.

Employees returned to the office to a nice surprise: 34-inch curved ultra-wide LG monitors at every desk. These monitors have a wide footprint, making daily work easier and more efficient, and eliminates the need for employees to have multiple monitors.

Media Production Facility

Mike Khatcheressian (Image credit: NAB)

Most people would assume the NAB has always had a state-of-the-art production facility, but Mike Khatcheressian, Emmy-winning producer and NAB vice president of media production, said that wasn’t always the case. “When I came for my job interview at NAB years ago, one of the things I was most excited about was to see the NAB studio," he recalled. "They walked me into this room and there was a greenscreen, a 10-year-old camera, and a few lights. I remember being shocked and saying at the time that this is going to be something you’re going to want to upgrade. I love what we have now and it really is a showpiece for NAB, kind of like what we all envisioned a studio at NAB could be.”

The new NAB Media Production Facility is highlighted by a curved, 15-foot Planar interactive video wall that can serve as an immersive backdrop for live and pre-recorded content. The studio is also outfitted with an 8K-capable edit suite and provides the ability for design capabilities to be done from remote access. The space is well equipped to accommodate Zoom interviews or interactions, providing additional options when their CEO or other stakeholders are unable to be on-site for outside events or interviews.

The NAB Media Production Facility features PTZ cameras and a curved, 15-foot Planar interactive video wall. (Image credit: NAB)

Four PTZ cameras are housed in the studio, but the space can accommodate up to eight cameras, with future capabilities expanding to pull in camera feeds from across the headquarters. Plus, a prompter is currently being installed that has the ability to detect who is speaking and provide seamless tracking amongst multiple speakers.

Originally, the space was not conceptualized as a studio—but through careful design, the compact area was designed to appear larger on camera. The studio provides NAB with the ability to produce a wide array of programming, including live webcasts, updates, educational content, sales seminars for NAB members, and future content for tradeshows. There is also the opportunity to use the space to bring in additional revenue from outside rentals, helping NAB make up for losses accrued during the pandemic.

Much of the studio was built through the support of NAB partners like Planar, Vitec Production Solutions, PESA, Barbizon Lighting Company, The Launch Group, Video Visions, Angry Badger Productions, Magis Media, and The Light Source, all of which donated services and equipment to help bring the innovative space to life. “It’s great for our partners to showcase their new technologies,” said Khatcheressian.

April Carty-Sipp (Image credit: NAB)

In choosing the partners, April Carty-Sipp, NAB executive vice president, industry affairs, said, "We had many conversations and leveraged connections our team has with companies we’ve worked with previously in the broadcast business or through our work at NAB." She said the first official partner was Angry Badger Productions, which helped bring in additional partners along the way.

While visitors can look forward to touring the studio space, the partners will benefit from the exposure their involvement provides, along with the opportunity to bring potential clients to see their technology in action. With this in mind, many of the partners are committed to continually upgrading technology to ensure the space showcases the latest and greatest. This also goes for LG, which is using the NAB headquarters as an opportunity to showcase its offerings and is committed to refreshing the technology for years to come.

With remote and hybrid work becoming commonplace, NAB hopes the headquarters is seen as a benefit to employees wanting to return to the office. “I remember the first time I walked in to 1M and saw all the technology. Just seeing all this beautiful technology and how modern it was—it really makes you proud to work at a place like NAB and makes you happy to come to work," said Khatchersessian. “You don’t mind the long commute in because you’re going to be in a comfortable space and one that is just fun to be in.”

Rob Lane, content editor for our sister publication, Installation has shared this exclusive interview with Mike Blackman, managing director at Integrated Systems Events.

Q: What were the main factors that informed your decision to postpone?

Blackman: It’s been a challenging time for so many over the past two years, and we have been keen to satisfy the appetite within the industry to meet again face to face. The situation with regard to Covid infection rates and different countries’ travel restrictions has been fluid, particularly recently; and after speaking with our exhibitors, owners and stakeholders, we agreed the best course of action was to postpone the show edition for three months.

In today’s environment – now more than ever – we need to be agile and responsive. Shows like ISE are for doing business and meeting in person, but none are the same as they were before the pandemic. We must acknowledge the factors within our control, and we are doing our best for the industry, our customers, and their customers – these are some of the factors we reviewed when making the decision to postpone to 10-13 May 2022.

Q: Was Omicron incidence growth in Spain the main reason? Or was it the low numbers of previous attendees confirming their attendance?

Blackman: Of course, we have been monitoring the conditions in Spain, but we are also closely monitoring the situation across Europe and many other countries. Vaccination programmes are progressing, but countries are still experiencing challenging restrictions. These conditions are affecting us all, and whilst we all want to get back to business, there continues to be a wide range of restrictions and a reluctance to travel. We have been working hard to balance health and safety concerns with the need for commerce and in-person interaction. As I have said already, we had to balance many factors in reaching this decision together with our exhibitors, the associations and our stakeholders.

Q: I think the industry appreciates how incredibly difficult a call this is to make, but the general consensus is that it's the right decision. In hindsight, do you feel that the decision could have been made sooner given the ominous spread of Omicron throughout Europe in December?

Blackman: As you have said, it was a difficult decision, and I think everyone appreciates that in today’s environment, we need to be agile and responsive. We made the decision together to postpone the show until spring (May 2022) and we believe it is the right choice to make.

Q: How did you come to a decision on the best dates for the rearranged show? May sandwiches ISE between two major US trade shows in NAB (April) and of course InfoComm (June), so will potentially impact upon American attendance. The dates also clash with smaller regional shows such as PLASA Leeds, the Media Production Show, and London Digital Signage Week. Were other dates considered and were exhibitors consulted regarding these new dates?

Blackman: To move a show the size of ISE is a challenging prospect and, in a venue as popular as the Fira de Barcelona, the options were very limited in a timescale that works for our industry. The window of available dates was extremely tight, the spring dates of 10-13 May provides time for our community to rebalance and for confidence in international travel and meetings to resume. We will be working closely with all our exhibitors and stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition to the new dates.

Q: Obviously postponement is an inconvenience for everybody, what with flight/hotel cancellations etc. But the exhibitors suffer the most – especially those that had already started shipping and even building pre-Xmas. How did you approach this difficult decision with them all?

Blackman: We have had significant feedback from our exhibitor community that this was the right decision to make. We are in the process of contacting all our customers to discuss their options and how we can help ensure that the transition to ISE 2022 in May and ISE 2023 in February is as smooth as possible. If they aren’t already doing so, I would urge all exhibitors to get in contact with their account manager to discuss the situation.

Q: With – I understand – 95% of their payments non-refundable if they were to pull out of the event, it’s unsurprising so few exhibitors pressed the cancel button even as Omicron started to spread across Europe. And this must hurt all the more for those that started shipping/building. Does ISE have any compensation packages in place for this eventuality?

Blackman: We are working closely with all our exhibitors to minimise the impact of the postponement and ensure that their experience at ISE 2022 in May is the best possible.

Q: What are the benefits for North American attendees to travel to Barcelona for ISE, when InfoComm in the US is coming up in June – especially in the light of the move to May? Have you budgeted for a reduction in American attendees as a result; or do you anticipate similar numbers to a February event, given that travel is likely to have opened up more by May?

Blackman: I was speaking to Dave Labuskes earlier this week and yes, we do have a number of events in close proximity – ISE in May, InfoComm in June and Beijing InfoComm China in July. The intention for each show in this coming year is to galvanise and rejuvenate the AV community while always keeping the safety of those in attendance as a priority.

Three major markets and three major shows! We are excited about the ‘summer of AV’ – while we realise that there are some challenges for those who want to participate across the globe – we invite exhibitors to call us and let’s work together to make the most of this time.

Of course, Covid is changing everything around us every day, but the constants of in-person value, innovation and story-telling have remained. No matter where or when, these shows will act as a catalyst for market growth and serve as a hub for the AV profession.

Q: How many attendees were registered for the February event, and what would be your forecast now that the show will be in what we hope will be a less restricted window in May?

Blackman: Our exhibitors were reporting to us that their customer feedback also showed that attendance was greatly impacted by the continued impact of Omicron as well as travel concerns, and that there was a strong desire to attend lSE later in the year. But as I mentioned before, exhibitor support and bookings for the show remain extremely strong – and, whilst it is fair to say that typically attendees are registering for shows much later than in previous years, we very much hope that the new dates in May will allow more of us to get together, to do business and to celebrate our inspiring industry.

Q: With the move to May, and the (hopefully) more realistic chances of being able to stage an in-person show, are you now forecasting to see an upswing in exhibitors committing to the show and will attendees be likely to see a bigger event than was slated for February?

Blackman: We now have another two and a half months to add some more features to the show – we will be revealing details over the coming weeks – so I say, stay tuned, keep an eye on our website for updates, and of course, we will share news of this with you as soon as possible.

Q: In addition, do you have any changes planned for the May event that weren't part of the original February show?

Blackman: We had a fabulous show floor, with six technology zones, set across five halls of the Gran Vía, and that remains. All seven of the ISE Conferences will also be taking place, we have a number of show floor networking lounges and of course the AV Experience Zone. There will also be some additional features, but as I am sure you will appreciate, we are working with our partners to confirm the details of the necessary rescheduling and I cannot wait to share the exciting stories with you over the coming weeks – watch this space!

Q: There has been much discussion about how trade shows will evolve as a result of Covid, as they accelerate into hybrid in-person/remote access events. Could you share what ISE has in place for the 2022 show in terms of producing a valuable trade show experience for attendees however they wish to ‘attend’ ISE 2022?

Blackman: ISE 2022 will offer a digital platform presenting many of the conferences, keynotes and up to date news. Although this will be comprehensive and also be augmented by many of our media partners, it of course cannot match the “in-person” experience of being in Barcelona.

Q: This must have been an incredibly taxing period for everyone concerned with ISE 2022, and its organisation. How has this affected you personally?

Blackman: This has been a difficult time, but we have an admirable community, a fabulous team and the support that has been provided has been a source of incredible strength and I’d like to thank each and every one for their efforts during this period.

Q: And how accommodating have the local Barcelona authorities been in assisting/backing the decisions you've had to make?

Blackman: Everyone involved in every aspect of this situation has been extremely supportive. The city of Barcelona, the regional support from Catalonia, the exemplary team at the Fira as well as many partners – their willingness to help and be flexible has been very much appreciated and we are hugely thankful. We cannot wait to celebrate with the entire community at the Fira in May.

Q: Finally, what's your message to attendees and exhibitors alike about the new May event, what they can look forward to, and of course why they should attend the leading AV and systems integration show on the planet?

Blackman: Well, I would like to say that I’d like to thank the AV community for their unwavering support. The positivity and solidarity shown over the last couple of days is a brilliant reflection of our industry. I can’t wait to welcome everyone to ISE this May in sunny Barcelona.

The 2021 NAB Show, originally scheduled to take place in April, will now be held Oct. 9–13, 2021, in Las Vegas.

"Through [the COVID-19 pandemic], we have witnessed growing concern and uncertainty over what the next six months will bring; enough that there appears to be a good deal of reluctance around participating in large events in the first half of next year," said National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) president and CEO Gordon Smith. "The pandemic remains a significant threat and the evidence suggests it will be well into next year before it could be under control in the U.S. We also have our own concerns around being able to deliver the type of event in April that will not only drive results, but one that can be produced safely for all involved and without significant limitations on the experience."

According to Smith, the 2021 Radio Show will co-locate with NAB Show in Las Vegas, as will NAB’s Sales and Management Television Exchange; and there is opportunity to add additional partner events. NAB is also considering alternate dates for NAB Show New York 2021, which is held annually in October.

For more information about the 2021 NAB Show, visit nabshow.com/2021.

The convention was scheduled to take place April 18–22 in Las Vegas.

[Enterprise Connect 2020 Postponed]

According to the report from Broadcasting & Cable, NAB is currently considering its options for a future date. NAB Executive Vice President Dennis Wharton said that one possibility could be to beef up the NAB Show New York in October (Oct. 21–22), though also potentially a summer show in Vegas if the virus threat has been mitigated and if NAB could get buy-in from exhibitors. He said NAB would be having those conversations with stakeholders over the coming days to determine their appetite for various options.

“This was not an easy decision,” said Gordon H. Smith, president and CEO of the NAB. “Fortunately, we did not have to make this decision alone, and are grateful to our NAB Show community for engaging with us as we grappled with the rapidly-evolving situation. This show is as much yours as it is ours, and it is important to us that we move forward together.

“I want to stress that despite our disappointment at how this year’s show has been impacted by global public health concerns, we are more excited than ever about the future of NAB Show and our relationship with you."

Read more on Broadcasting & Cable

Read more on Radio World

The What: JVC Professional Video, a division of JVCKENWOOD USA Corporation, will debut its new KA-EN200G H.265/HEVC Encoder at this year’s NAB show (Booth C4417). Designed to deliver higher quality, lower bit-rate streaming, the plug-in H.265/HEVC module provides add-on value for the company’s CONNECTED CAM series, which includes the GY-HC900, GY-HC500, and GY-HC550 camcorders.

[JVC Launches ProHD BR-EN900 HEVC Hardware Encoder at NAB 2019]

The What Else: The JVC module fits into the expansion slot of any model within the CONNECTED CAM line of camcorders for HD streaming using the H.265/HEVC codec. Owing to its higher level of efficiency, High Efficiency Video Compression (HEVC) is an improvement over the widely used H.264/AVC compression standard. This results in higher quality images with reduced bandwidth—up to 50 percent savings—and allows producers to use 10-bit 4:2:2 rather than typical 8-bit 4:2:0 sampling.

“As the video landscape continues to develop, we are looking ahead to the evolution of the HEVC standard,” said Edgar Shane, general manager, engineering, JVCKENWOOD USA Corp. “JVC remains ahead of emerging trends and evolving technologies, focusing on smarter engineering solutions for broadcast and streaming professionals. We recognize that HEVC offers many advantages over the H.264/AVC compression standard. By offering this new plug-in module, JVC allows its customers to future-proof the investment they’ve made in JVC’s CONNECTED CAM line.”

The Bottom Line: CONNECTED CAM camcorders are designed to optimize both video recording and IP performance. All 500 and 900 models provide 1080p streaming and SMPTE 2022 error correction. Selected models also add Zixi error correction with FEC, ARQ, and adaptive bitrate for reliable transmission. CONNECTED CAM’s built-in streaming encoders with LAN/Wi-Fi connectivity provide broadcast-quality video-over-IP directly from the camera—no backpacks or encoders are needed.

The KA-EN200G is currently available with an MSRP of $1,250.

The What: Magewell will unveil its most powerful decoder hardware to date in booth SU5724 at the 2020 NAB Show (April 19-22 in Las Vegas). The hardware decoder supports both Newtek's NDI technology for production-grade media transport and the Secure Reliable Transport (SRT) protocol for internet-delivered H.264 and H.265 streams.

[Magewell to Premiere Compact 12G-SDI M.2 Capture Card at ISE 2020]

The What Else: The company is also simultaneously launching a second new model, the Pro Convert H.26x to HDMI 4K, which offers the same features as the Pro Convert for NDI to HDMI 4K for users who don't require NDI support. Both models also support additional streaming protocols including RTSP, RTMP, UDP, RTP, and HTTP streaming.

The two new low-latency converters decode input streams up to 4196x2160 at full 60 frames per second for output to baseband monitors, projectors, production, or distribution equipment via an HDMI 2.0 interface.

The Pro Convert for NDI to HDMI 4K and Pro Convert H.26x to HDMI 4K can automatically optimize output parameters based on EDID metadata of the connected HDMI display, while FPGA-based video processing enables high-quality up/down-conversion between HD and 4K. The compact devices measure 3.97 by 2.4 inches (100.9 by 60.2mm) with a height of 0.92 inches (23.3mm), and can be powered via external adapter or PoE. Users can manage advanced features of the devices via on-unit controls, a browser-based interface, or connected keyboard or mouse.

"We have received considerable interest from customers wanting the flexibility of decoding either NDI streams from their internal networks or SRT streams from external sources over the public internet," said Nick Ma, CEO and CTO at Magewell. "Each technology has its own distinct advantages for different applications, and we are seeing deployments of mixed infrastructures using multiple technologies to support specific production, display, and distribution facets of the content chain. With support for NDI, SRT, and even more protocols, the Pro Convert for NDI to HDMI 4K gives customers the versatility they need as their IP workflows evolve."

The Bottom Line: Designed for reliability, the converters are well suited for applications including multi-site video distribution, image magnification (IMAG), video walls, digital signage, remote production, and bridging legacy and next-generation media infrastructures.

At the 2020 NAB Show (Booth SL4711), Canadian real-time data solutions provider Bannister Lake will showcase its data aggregation and management solution Chameleon and demonstrate how the product can add value to a wide variety of broadcast, OTT, and digital signage applications.

[Bannister Lake Partners With Mobility Data Provider Roadify Transit]

Bannister Lake will highlight Chameleon’s enhanced election module ready for the 2020 U.S. election cycle. Media companies can take advantage of Chameleon’s new election features to produce real-time election coverage on any screen. Chameleon reads election results from both the Associated Press and Decision Desk HQ, allowing media to report on up ballot and down ballot races as well as the primaries and caucuses.

Bannister Lake will also highlight Chameleon’s ability to fully manage and visualize both live data feeds and on-air branding content for enhancing news productions, sponsorships, and promotions. Broadcasters in any market, using any output device, can integrate, moderate, and customize multiple live data feeds into graphic templates and provide their audiences with real-time news, weather, sports, social media, financial, and fully customized data. In addition, the product’s branding module can fully control sponsor’s snipes, bugs, and other promotional graphic content triggered by the broadcaster’s traffic system.

[Bannister Lake Chameleon Drives Data Aggregation at the US Open]

Automated infochannels will also be in the spotlight at the 2020 NAB Show. Chameleon serves as the foundation to ingest, manage, and visualize an unlimited number of data feeds that can be rendered to any graphics engine, HTML 5, or NDI. Broadcasters can quickly launch infochannels made up of real-time news, weather, sports, financial, event calendars, and other relevant content. To enhance the offering, Bannister Lake has recently added transit and car sharing data to make the channels especially important to local audiences.

As legal sports wagering continues to grow across the U.S., Bannister Lake will be featuring wagering channels covering horse racing, fantasy sports, and other events. Chameleon has become an essential tool to aggregate, manage, and display both sports statistics and betting data. Bannister Lake works with media companies that require a robust solution that can read data from a wide variety of sources and can integrate that data into the on-air presentation.

The 2020 NAB Show will also spotlight in-venue, real-time data solutions for arenas and stadiums. More and more venues are realizing that real-time data plays an integral role in delivering content that adds a deeper and more entertaining fan experience. Venues appreciate that advertising- and sponsor-related content has more impact if real-time, game-relevant, insightful data could be tied to the presentation. Chameleon is used to ingest real-time statistical data from the leagues, allowing fans to view carefully parsed live game and league statistics combined with game action. Venues are also turning to Chameleon to develop innovative use cases for real-time data and sponsorships, including graphically visualizing wait times at exit gates and concessions, charity lotteries, and corporate communications solutions.

We have exciting product news to share, and we look forward to bringing those products to market as planned," the company said in a statement.

According to the company, AJA is a community-based company with a majority of its staff, product development, and manufacturing located in Grass Valley, CA, and, in light of the risks presented by Covid-19, having a physical presence at NAB posed "too great of a risk."

The What: Adder Technology is set to its first dual-head high performance, 4K IP KVM matrix over a single fiber at NAB 2019. The company says the launch of the ADDERLink Infinity 4000 Series (ALIF4000) is perfectly timed to support IP KVM users as they transition their broadcast and production environments to 4K.

The What Else: Adder says its ALIF4000 delivers pixel-perfect, color accurate video quality, audio and USB to single or dual 4K screens—benefitting broadcasters, post-production professionals, or VFX specialists looking to improve their workflow and increase flexibility by making 4K content accessible from a single position or location.

[NAB 2019 Preview]

“We are really excited to bring the new ADDERLink Infinity 4000 series to North America and NAB is the ideal event to showcase its capabilities," said Tim Conway, VP Americas, Adder. "The introduction of the ALIF4000 into the INFINITY range means our customers can continue to reap the rewards of their existing network but now with the addition of 4K video support.”

The Bottom Line: Full compatibility with the existing Infinity range means the ALIF4000 can be phased into an existing network without disruption, downtime or the need to rip and replace. The product can be seen at NAB 2019 in Booth SL8620.
