Emerging applications add ease-of-use to AV/IP configuration and integration

Everything except the most specialized of applications will end up on IP. IP is the least expensive and most flexible way to drive video across distance. And it allows the use of Wi-Fi. Vendors chosen should be vendors with a long track record that have demonstrated industry leadership. They should be able to speak towards systems that can both be controlled over IP and can support distribution over IP. Their products should be of high quality and suitable for professional-grade applications—not technology randomly imported from consumer TV applications. You should also expect qualified levels of support both before and after your purchase. Your vendor should demonstrate knowledge of current security issues. And your vendor should optimally consider edge devices from other manufacturers as complimentary and value-add rather than strictly competition.

Today, screens can be morphed into any configuration, including tiled video walls made up of 1080P or 4K flat-panel displays with total resolution beyond 8K. And best practices for delivering video signals to and from these devices in the most efficient way possible are evolving quickly.

As high-end customers demand more pixels for their uber-large screen displays, there’s an 8K media server available that can do the job

• Be they the world’s premier auto shows, giant theme parks, or major business events, today’s high-end users of uber-large video displays are demanding more pixels than ever before. These users want to play out stunning visual content at resolutions as high as 8K (7680×4320 pixels) if possible. If not, then a mix of 4K (3840×2160 pixels) video streams will do.

What to Look for in a Modern Media Server
With the growth of 4K and the push towards 8K, video presentation purchasers would be wise to take a ‘future-proof’ approach to media servers

1) Scope out your long-term needs first
Before selecting a media server or family of media servers, determine your own playout needs. Will you need multiple 4K channels? Is 8K on the horizon? Then buy media services that will have enough ‘headroom’ for their expected operational lifespans with your company.
2) It’s all about hardware and software
A media server’s hardware is only as good as the software that operates it. Quiz each vendor as to the capabilities of each; how their hardware and software interact on their media server platforms, and what their upgrade/support plans are.
3) Buy enough computing power
A modern media server needs lots of processing power to serve 8K and 8K video streams reliably; with no hesitations or dropouts. Get as much CPU capacity as you can afford, and make sure that your system supports the highest-possible data rates. The catch: “Whether in 8K or 4K, these video streams need to be uncompressed to fill giant screens with as much detail as they can,” said Danny Whetstone; founder and president of the production house DWP Live in Nashville, TN. “Compressed video may look good on a 70" display, but it won’t cut it on a massive video wall,” he said.

Serving such massive pixel playouts requires one or more media servers with the sheer processing power, gigantic hard drive capacity, and rock-solid reliability to keep these playouts running without interruption 24/7. A case in point: MATRIXMANAGEMENT GmbH integrated seventeen AV Stumpfl Wings Engine RAW and three Wings Engine Stage media servers that powered approximately 700 square meters of high-resolution 3.5 mm pitch LED displays -- spread across four screens – in Audi’s main presentation area at the 2015 IAA International Motor Show in Frankfurt, Germany. Using the combined output from these 20 AV Stumpfl media servers, the LED screens displayed a total of 36,000 horizontal pixels in uncompressed format. That is something that couldn’t be done using conventional compressed video. (For the record, the largest screen used a single-stream of uncompressed video at 12240x1907 pixels and the smallest screen produced an unprecedented 7208x2312 pixels.)

Besides offering 8K/4K video playout, the 8K Wings Engine RAW media server can display video content using a full 12-bit colour depth; delivering more color information than the current media server standard. “As well, the RAW media server’s rendering engine can support high frame rate footage of up to 120fps, and can create seamless 8K soft edge blending panoramas,” said Stucken. “You can even play out native image sequences like TGA or TIFF without converting them into an intermediate codec format: The 8K Wings Engine RAW media server can handle it.”

Managing the installation of large-format LED and LCD displays is a critical process for AV integrators.

Whether working with new construction or overcoming the challenges of retrofit jobs, integrators bear the burden of safety in display installations. It is important for integrators to maintain the integrity of the project. Cutting corners is a risk no one can afford to take.

By using these tips as a guide, integrators can eliminate a lot of the worry in display installations and focus on delivering the “wow” for their clients.

Always follow rules of thumb with ventilation.
Display manufacturers suggest proper installation techniques for their products, including mounting and other aspects of the job. Paying close attention to a display’s ventilation requirements can save trouble down the line. Most display manufacturers suggest leaving 2.5 inches of space around the top and sides of the display, which allows heat to escape. Blocking airflow will overheat the display and cause failure, and a manufacturer likely will not honor a warranty if the ventilation was done improperly. Get it right the first time and save headaches later.

Don’t overlook third-party product certifications.
Ensuring safety and quality in your work doesn’t have to be a guessing game, thanks to international standards and product certifications. Underwriter Laboratories (UL), for example, tests and certifies the strength and safety of displays. UL also examines materials that go into the wall it attaches to, which gives insight into what display size, weight and configuration it can handle.

The international Organization for Standardization (ISO) is an independent group that ensures product consistency across markets by developing and publishing standards—21,579 to date, covering everything from food safety to technology. Manufacturers that follow ISO standards ensure uniform quality across markets and countries, allowing integrators to minimize errors and problems with display mounting.

Know when to call in professionals to complement your expertise.
Recruit the building's architect or structural engineer, who can advise on the strength and materials of the walls, and work with them on safety approvals. Make sure the end user realizes the importance of keeping all of it under one contractor. Whoever installs the mounts should also install the displays—doing so keeps ownership of the overall safety of the installation where it belongs.

The demand for high quality video across the enterprise is growing exponentially. What’s the best way to handle all of that data?

Managing AV on the IT network is no longer an option; it’s absolutely necessary to meet the needs of dynamic knowledge workers and students. From sales and marketing, to HR and education, high quality video now plays a critical role in meetings, classrooms, and communications across virtually every business segment and functional area. And the demand for video is only increasing.

How your customers choose to manage and distribute video data is critical not only to the long-term health of their network, but also to ensuring optimal user experiences that drive engagement and productivity rather than delays and frustration.

The rise of streaming

Just as Netflix® has changed the way people watch TV, network video is changing the way every business and university works. Network video must be a central component of an IP network strategy and plan, as it is by far the best solution for transmitting video long distances. But network video also comes with latency and bandwidth concerns. Moreover, network video doesn’t support protected content or applications where the unparalleled quality of uncompressed video is necessary, such as for radar, CAD imagery, and medical diagnostics.

When shrinkage is a good thing

AV over IP leverages existing network infrastructure for video distribution, with network video solutions employing compression technology to fit high-bandwidth video over lower-bandwidth links via a standard Ethernet cable. The two main compression formats are H.264 and JPEG2K, each offering benefits and tradeoffs. Rather than breaking down the algorithms behind each type of compression, the most important factors to consider are that H.264 optimizes video packets to consume less bandwidth, while JPEG2 optimizes video for reduced latency.

Low-bandwidth H.264 streams can use as little as 1MBps up to 25Mbps. They play nicely in most network environments, allowing many streams per link and the ability to interoperate on corporate networks. The “cost” is in latency, which can easily add up to a half second of delay in the video stream. Best practice dictates that acceptable latency for in-room applications is < 50ms. Anything more than that creates dissonance between the presenter, the presentation, and the audience. This makes H.264 the preferred choice for cameras, signage, long distance transmission, such as overflow rooms, but not for in-room extension where mouse and keyboard lag is jarring.

JPEG2K video is much higher bandwidth, using up to 880 Mbps of the 1Gb Ethernet link. As a result they generally require a network cable run, similar to that required for supporting uncompressed video. The benefit, some would suggest, is lower latency. However, there is still up to 120ms delay, which is still beyond the tolerance level of the average person.

No compromise video

The expectation for meetings, presentations, and collaboration is zero latency and the highest picture quality possible, up to and including 4K. This isn’t possible with network video. HDMI®, HDBaseT®, and fiber infrastructure is best for these applications.

However, they all have distance limitations. HDMI can only travel 30 feet, HDBaseT can go up to 330 feet, and fiber can go either 1,000 feet (multimode) or 7 miles (single mode). Installing new and more expensive single mode fiber can be costly, plus it can’t transmit video to another geographic location, such as an international office or satellite campus. Network video is the best solution for these applications, where latency is not noticeable or a concern.

There’s no silver bullet solution that miraculously erases the performance divide between network video and zero-latency, uncompressed video solutions. Choosing one or the other is not an option. It requires robust, scalable enterprise infrastructure that supports both types of distribution.

LCD flat panel installation growth has been one of the most dramatic in the past few years due to the resurgence of video walls. Take a closer look at the technology behind new-generation video walls in this select group of articles, videos, and product releases on the developments in these booming areas.

Video walls have been a part of the AV landscape for decades. But for most of that history, video walls were bulky, cumbersome, hard-to install, and generally very compromised in terms of visual quality, resolution, and flexibility. Those older generation Video Walls were made up of stacked video monitors—really just stacked TVs or monitors that presented the familiar “grid” of images. In that older technology, the grid was always visible and distracting. And even with the advent of LCD/LED flat panels in recent years, most Video Walls are not using the latest, most advanced, thin or super-thin bezel designs.

• But in recent years technology improvements and engineering breakthroughs have allowed thinner mullions, or “bezels” in Video Walls. (The term bezel refers of course to the black line, or thin border between each screen that makes up a Video Wall.) The best video wall/flat panel display manufacturers are offering bezel sizes in the “Narrow” range: about 3.5mm bezel width. Fast forward from the past eras of clunky video walls to today– and we’ve all seen the rapid growth in the installation of large, dazzling video walls in spaces public and private– from airports to corporate offices to sports arenas to universities. And even retail stores are taking advantage of the benefit of Video Walls to place branding and marketing where people shop. But with the proliferation of Video Walls, it’s important to learn which Video Wall technology is engineered to out-perform the lesser brands and models, so you can choose a Video Wall that is designed to not just dazzle but to impart your important messaging effectively, and is built to succeed in every environment.

So what are some of the other key technology features of new-gen video walls to consider? There are two more key issues to consider:
