Pro AV is an industry that’s constantly shifting: new formats, new workflows, new expectations from customers. What worked five years ago can feel outdated quickly. For Matrox Video to reach 50 years, it comes down to the ability to adapt.

That’s really the story of Matrox Video. From early work in graphics and video technology to its role today in AV and media infrastructure, the company has evolved alongside the industry, adjusting course as both the technology and market changed. And right now, Pro AV is in the middle of another shift.

Infrastructure Conversation

Matrox Video has always had a strong engineering foundation. Early on, that meant building video memory and graphics solutions as the PC market was still taking shape. By the early ’90s, we were already moving toward PC-based video systems, well before that became standard. This opened the door to new opportunities and further investment in development. Over time, that led into graphics processing, then broadcast, and eventually deeper into Pro AV.

What’s kept things steady isn’t just the technology. There’s a culture at Matrox Video shaped by a strong belief in engineering and how people work together. Teams stay, knowledge builds, and that continuity shows up in the products.

It also shows up in customer relationships. The focus isn’t on quick wins, but on building products that last and supporting them over time. Many Matrox Video customers have been around for years (some for decades), and that kind of loyalty doesn’t happen by accident.

Talk to system integrators today, and the conversation has changed. It’s no longer about individual devices, but about how everything works as a whole. AV has moved from point-to-point to networked environments, and is now part of a broader IT strategy.

At the same time, expectations have increased. Higher resolutions, more immersive experiences, and support for hybrid and distributed work. Pro AV today is very much a hybrid world, where most projects mix existing infrastructure with newer technologies.

The move to IP has been talked about for years. It’s happening, but it’s not a clean shift. Organizations are balancing signal paths with IP-based workflows where it makes sense. Bridging technologies (for example, encoders, decoders, and gateways) make that possible, allowing integrators to connect legacy systems to IP environments without starting over.

For many customers, that’s the only practical path forward. For integrators, it creates an opportunity and a balancing act: designing systems that work now but leaving room for customers to evolve.

Open Systems and Beyond

Another shift is how customers think about ownership and control of their systems. There’s less appetite for closed ecosystems—increasingly, organizations want the flexibility to choose different vendors and have those systems work together. That’s driving the push toward open standards.

In Pro AV, IPMX is a good example. It builds on proven concepts such as interoperability and scalability, while adapting them to real-world AV deployments. Many networks are still running at 1 Gbps and budgets are tight, so the systems and technologies gaining traction are ones that work within constraints rather than around them.

The transition to IP isn’t just technical, it’s organizational. AV and IT teams are now working closely together, often for the first time. What used to be simple point-to-point connections now involves network design, bandwidth, security, and redundancy. The shift requires a different mindset; for a lot of organizations, it’s still a work in progress.

It’s also why system design matters more than ever. Integrators are no longer just installing equipment; they’re helping define how environments are built and managed from the start.

For example, KVM isn’t new, but it’s increasingly more relevant in distributed environments. As systems move toward centralized compute and remote access, KVM allows users to interact with those systems without being tied to a specific location. That’s especially important in control rooms, where operators need to move between sources quickly and focus on the right information at the right time. It also supports better security by keeping systems centralized while controlling access at the user level.

Another interesting outcome of the move to IP is how it’s changing the role of the video wall itself. No longer just a fixed display surface, it’s becoming part of a broader, networked system. Content can come from anywhere and systems can scale or adapt without being tied to a single space.

We’re seeing similar patterns in healthcare where video is extending beyond the operating room into other parts of the facility. Or in enterprise environments where redundancy (like backup control rooms) is becoming standard. These aren’t just one-off cases anymore, they’re becoming expectations.

AI is part of the conversation everywhere, but in Pro AV, the impact is often more practical. We’re seeing it in camera automation, content tagging, and captioning—tools that reduce manual effort. It allows teams to focus on creating better content and optimizing systems. Behind the scenes, it’s also helping engineering teams move faster by shortening development cycles and speeding up testing.

Looking Ahead

If you look out over the next decade, the direction is clear: more software-based systems and more processing happening in data centers and the cloud. Edge devices are connecting more directly into those environments. At the same time, expectations around quality and experience will continue to rise. AI will continue to evolve, less as a standalone feature and more as something embedded across workflows.

For Matrox Video, the focus is on making all this easier to bring together. That means continuing the development of open standards, advancing software-defined platforms that run on COTS infrastructure, and working closely with the system integrators who ultimately make these systems work in practice. That’s what it comes down to—not just the technology, but how well it all comes together when it’s deployed.

Fifty years in, that’s still the challenge, and it’s a pretty good place to start the next chapter.

I’ve been covering trade shows for a long time, and the energy on the ISE show floor never seems to disappoint. ISE 2026, which wrapped up its four-day exhibition on Feb. 6, was no different.

The Next Big Thing is still MIA in Pro AV, but technology is still moving and shaking. Driven by AI, which seemed to be an underlying theme for everything but the paella in Barcelona, there were plenty of points of interest to explore on the show floor.

This year’s theme, “Push Beyond,” could have easily been applied to the show itself, not just the industry. Co-owned by AVIXA and CEDIA, ISE 2026 broke its own records, with an 8% increase in total attendance over last year. According to show officials, there were a record 1,751 exhibitors, including 323 first timers, to welcome 92,170 visitors across the largest total show floor space in ISE history.

What fuels the energy at ISE? While the widespread availability of espresso on the show floor doesn’t hurt, the fact is Pro AV is a vibrant industry serving tons of vertical markets. And there’s plenty of business to be done once the show floor closes, from small, one-off projects to enterprise-wide retrofits.

During the show, I spoke with Tom Morrod, co-founder and research director at Caretta Research. While he agreed Pro AV is growing and it's a "very diverse industry," corporate meeting rooms are still the top draw, with a "huge transformation" taking place from simple audioconferencing to multimedia production.

To that end, the platforms to manage these transformations not only need to be bulletproof but must work for end users who are less proficient at using these types of tools. "Democratization of technology is a big driver," he noted.

Of course, Pro AV hasn't had the smoothest path in recent months. While tariffs have had a "broadly negligible impact on growth," there has been disruption—and integrators have had to bear the brunt of it. "It can be really difficult if you're in the middle of it," Morrod explained. "The channel has been dealing with the complexity of it."

InfoComm is getting even more international.

During the show, AVIXA officials announced the launch of InfoComm EDGE, which is scheduled for Oct. 27-28 at Dubai's Festival Arena. It was designed from the ground up as an experiential event designed to raise the profile of the Pro AV industry with stakeholders outside of the industry.

Why Dubai? From a Pro AV perspective, it’s booming. According to AVIXA research, roughly 85% of end user entities in the region plan to increase Pro AV spend this year, and the annual spend on Pro AV in the GCC region in 2026 will exceed $15 billion for the first time.

But they’ll be doing things a little differently at InfoComm EDGE. Instead of a grid, the floor plan is built around a center stage. There will also be four zones representing the priority verticals for the region, including government and enterprise, leisure and entertainment, education, and retail. The show will be curated for key buyers and influencers from the region, allowing them to experience Pro AV innovation through thought leadership, networking, and technology.

David Labuskes CEO, AVIXA, said initial expectations are about 4,000 attendees. Yes, that’s a lot smaller than ISE, but InfoComm EDGE will be intentionally compact, focused on quality, not quantity. Labuskes anticipates the event will “end up being about connections being made, not people through the door.”

There were reasons to celebrate.

Anniversaries certainly kept the mood festive in several booths on the show floor. First, the PSNI Global Alliance celebrated 40 years of global collaboration. The network of integrators, manufacturers, service providers, and technology partners provides coverage in more than 70 countries across six continents.

Meanwhile, the HDBaseT Alliance celebrated its 15th anniversary. The organization has come a long way since it was founded by LG, Samsung, Sony, and Valens Semiconductor. Today, there are almost 200 members, and a display at the booth showcased dozens of new products from more than 30 of those members. Effi Goldstein, president of the HDBaseT Alliance, told me the secret to the alliance's "connectivity backbone" success has been technological reliability and true partnerships between manufacturers.

Then there were the companies. Both Alfalite and SpinetiX marked their 20th anniversaries at ISE. SpinetiX used the occasion to launch "The Year of High Impact Experiences," while Alfalite showcased "20 years lighting the future." And Matrox Video and Symetrix celebrated their 50th anniversaries.

On the other end of the scale, the Alliance for IP Media Solutions (AIMS) officially launched its Internet Protocol Media Experience (IPMX) as a fully developed, certifiable standard at the show. According to Andrew Starks, marketing working group chair and a member of the AIMS board of directors, the AV over IP standard was officially certified on Jan. 23 after years of development. Next up: more refinements, including multi-vendor HDCP and multi-vendor privacy encryption.

That's a lot to celebrate. Congratulations all around!

Was I right about e-paper?

After last year’s show, I was pretty high on e-paper. In fact, I predicted a breakthrough in two years. Well, it’s only been a year, but I checked with a few ISE exhibitors. Looks like I need to be more patient.

Vicky Fox at Philips (PPDS) tactfully admitted that, although the company has been involved in some big projects, it’s a “maturing” space. While the market works to catch up to the idea, the company is focused on improving the technology and delivering color accuracy.

So, what's the hold up? For Till Gotterbarm, VP of business development at AUO Display+, part of the problem behind the slow adoption is the learning curve. Users have to differentiate e-paper as “digital print” as opposed to a replacement for LCD. “We still have to educate the market,” he added. “I do see that starting to resonate.”

Finally, e-paper is not the only aspect of Pro AV that’s designed for sustainability. Any of us who have worked in live production know that AA and AAA batteries are wasted with some frequency. Are you going to trust your live mic to a used battery that may or may not have enough charge for the last show? Of course not. Toss out the old, install the new.

Klvr is trying to change that with the KLVR Charger Pro, a 1 RU battery charging station that made its ISE debut last year as a technology demo. The charger holds up to 48 AA or AAA batteries, and its 1.5V Li-ion batteries offer 30% more runtime than other commercial rechargeables. It's also easy to monitor charging progress. All they need now are some U.S. distributors—the company is scheduled to attend InfoComm, so that might be changing soon.

For many organizations, the biggest hesitation in modernizing AV systems is the belief that moving forward means ripping everything out and starting from scratch. In reality, most end users don’t need or want to replace entire systems. What’s more practical and sustainable is keeping the elements that still work well and bridging them with newer technologies. This approach reduces staff retraining and avoids waste. Teams can then evolve at their own pace.

That’s where interoperability comes in. Today’s AV/IT environments often resemble technology islands—ecosystems that work well independently but don’t always communicate with one another. End users may value their existing cameras or video walls, but when new requirements emerge, incompatibility becomes a real obstacle. AV gateway products are a great way to bridge between older systems and newer technology, allowing both to be used in the same installation.

Standards-based solutions provide the clearest path forward. Open standards like IPMX and SMPTE ST 2110 make it possible to mix equipment from multiple manufacturers and reduce the risk of vendor lock-in. In practice, this can mean running day-to-day conferencing over a corporate 1GbE network while seamlessly shifting to a 10GbE broadcast workflow for high-end production—all with the same underlying infrastructure. Organizations gain freedom from vendor lock-in and proprietary constraints.

The advice for end users is to focus on flexibility. Prioritize systems that integrate with what you already have and embrace open standards. This approach ensures that today’s investments remain relevant, while giving you the freedom to adopt new technologies and build AI-over-IP systems that can grow with you on your own terms.

Whether AV systems are for rich experiences in venues or for managing signals on campuses like businesses or universities, they often involve equipment from different tech categories. For example, in many organizations it is not rare to see mixtures of two or all three of the following things: media processing equipment, signal extension and switching equipment, and IT department equipment.

There are many factors that have made it possible to accomplish any task that previously required hardwired cables to be achievable using packetized IP. The most challenging thing left to overcome while migrating from hardwired cables to IP is dealing with mixing different equipment types, equipment classes, and vendor solutions with interfaces such as HDMI.

The two most important things that have happened to address this final challenge is the emergence of open standards and specifications—such as SMPTE ST 2110, AES67, NMOS, and IPMX—and the emergence of IP-to-IP gateway converters of many types to help deal with conversions of media profiles within the media options of the standards and between different media and protocols including proprietary options.

End users looking to evolve legacy or even newer AV systems should consider IPMX-compliant solutions that offer smooth plug-and-play integration. An optimized hybrid infrastructure will leverage interoperability for high-quality audio, video, and data for SMPTE ST 2110 transport across common networks. Organizations should be able to add capabilities at their own pace while avoiding vendor lock-in and giving them the flexibility to build infrastructures that grow with them. Several vendors have always offered modular and standards-based technologies that adapt to real-world challenges, and they are now embracing IPMX integration.

In my role, I spend much of my time listening to colleges, universities, and corporations as they rethink how their AV systems support teaching and collaboration. One of the most common concerns I hear is that rooms feel inconsistent. A professor might walk into one classroom and everything works smoothly, then step into another and struggle to get the system started. The same frustration shows up in corporate offices. Consistency is one of the simplest ways to improve user confidence and adoption.

Another challenge customers raise is the pressure on lean support teams. Higher ed IT groups may be responsible for hundreds of classrooms, while corporate AV staff cover global meeting spaces. I often hear, “We can’t be everywhere at once.” This is where centralized, cloud-based monitoring really makes a difference. When teams can see issues in real time and push updates remotely, they spend less time firefighting and more time enabling productivity.

Clients are also curious about how artificial intelligence fits in. What I tell them is that AI works best when it disappears into the background. Cameras that automatically follow a presenter, microphones that remove noise, and live captions that improve accessibility all make the experience smoother without adding complexity.

Finally, one theme that comes up again and again is equity for remote participants. Whether it is a student joining from home or a colleague dialing in from another office, people expect to be seen and heard clearly. That is no longer optional; it is the baseline.

The most successful AV strategies I see are the ones that put people first. When systems are reliable, intuitive, and supportive of everyone in the room and beyond, the technology simply enables better outcomes.

As AV systems grow more complex and distributed, spanning corporate campuses, higher education institutions, and dynamic multi-use facilities, the role of the integrator is evolving just as quickly. For end-users looking to evolve their AV systems, I recommend attending industry trade shows like InfoComm, ISE, and NAB, among others, which provide a neutral platform to explore new technologies. Ignore the marketing, and what size booth, and who throws the best parties. Do not be a “zombie” tradeshow walker either. That is where you walk aimlessly and get sucked in by the pretty shows people put on, but miss what is right in front of you that can make a difference. Dealer and distributor local shows can work well, just understand the limitations and combine them with other research, as many of these shows will only show you what they sell and are aligned with, leaving out many other brands and new technologies.

If you really want to do what is right for your company, due diligence is everything. Talk directly with a variety of manufacturers and test the products yourself to see if they meet your requirements. Nothing is better than a good old-fashioned shootout between brands, especially if the end user is in control of it to make sure everything is on a proper playing field. All manufacturers are guilty of making their products sound as good as possible. That is simply marketing at its best or worst, for that matter.

Ask questions like what makes your technology better than the competition, what is your warranty, where is it made, what is the life span of the product, do you make the product (yeah, many companies just slap their name on OEM and pretend it is theirs, support, education, TAA compliant, and roadmap. Don’t fall into the AI trap where companies make it sound exciting from a buzzword. See that it really does what they say, regardless of the tag line. At the end of the day, you are solving a problem, and it does not matter what fancy wrapper it comes in; does it simply do what is advertised, and does it do it well?

As a result, AV over IP has emerged as a viable solution. Unlike traditional systems that often depend on proprietary hardware and cabling, AV over IP integrates seamlessly into IT environments.

From transport networks and emergency response to energy infrastructure and defense, modern command and control centers are, quite literally, mission critical. As such, they typically draw on a wide variety of technologies from a host of vendors, with system interoperability central to how well teams can perform.

Indeed, technology integration has always been a defining factor in command center effectiveness, but as more systems move to IP-based infrastructures, ensuring devices, platforms, and protocols work together has become significantly more complex. One of the key challenges is that legacy approaches to signaling—where audio and video signals were transmitted over fixed, hardware-defined paths using standard interfaces like HDMI or SDI—are no longer sufficient for the rigors of modern command center operations.

Complicating matters even further is that modern command centers use an enormous range of technologies. For the operators alone, there are lighting, speaker, and microphone systems, which must work alongside high-resolution video walls, IP-based AV distribution, KVM switches, sensor networks, and, increasingly, AI-powered analytics. Integrated comms platforms, secure network infrastructure, and cloud-based control systems also play a significant role, alongside tools for processing and routing media across increasingly complex environments. The list goes on.

Integration at Scale

But why the move to IP? Fundamentally, IP is the most widely adopted, standards-based technology capable of supporting real-time media, data, and control signals at scale. For contemporary command centers, one of the most significant benefits is its flexibility; unlike traditional AV infrastructure, IP removes physical constraints by enabling any number of inputs and outputs to be routed over standard networks.

IP also allows media to travel far greater distances, across buildings, campuses, or even globally, using widely available IT infrastructure rather than specialized hardware. This not only improves scalability but also lays the groundwork for deeper cloud integration and remote collaboration across multiple sites, both of which are becoming increasingly important as organizations look to balance oversight with operational agility and cost-effectiveness.

While the use of IP in command centers is already widespread, it introduces some important technical and operational challenges that can impact interoperability and performance. Arguably, at the top of the list is that different device types (such as AV systems, computing platforms, and control interfaces) have adopted IP in inconsistent ways, often using incompatible standards and differing ways of handling data compression. This fragmented approach makes seamless communication difficult and frequently requires complex conversion tools to bridge the gaps.

Performance can also suffer. For example, uncompressed 4K video can consume up to 18 Gbps of bandwidth. As media moves between compressed and raw formats for processing, these demands escalate quickly. Without careful infrastructure planning, network congestion becomes a real risk.

Latency is another key concern. While compression reduces data size, it often adds delay—a situation unacceptable in real-time environments where responsiveness is critical. As a result, command centers must balance media quality, speed, and interoperability more precisely than ever, with standardization and flexibility as essential components of fully functioning systems

Standardization and Smart Conversion

So, how are these important requirements being addressed? In general terms, two broad strategies are shaping the future of command center design: standardization and smart media conversion. On the standardization front, initiatives including the IPMX specifications are gaining traction by offering a common framework for transmitting audio, video, and control signals over IP networks.

More specifically, IPMX addresses the Pro AV industry’s need for a common set of ubiquitous standards and protocols in the transition to IP-based media infrastructures. It does so by delivering a supple and complete suite of standards and specifications upon which manufacturers can build products that are more interoperable between equipment types and different brands. To ensure open standards don’t come at the cost of protection, IPMX also introduces a privacy encryption protocol.

Standardization helps with many IP-based media systems challenges. But in environments as rich and diverse as control rooms, this alone is not enough. Being able to use multiple media profiles as well as being able to convert from proprietary protocols to/from the standards is also necessary. For this, new classes of IP-to-IP gateways have also entered the market.

These devices perform real-time media and protocol conversion, allowing signals to move between otherwise incompatible products while also bridging asset classes, some of which depend on synchronization while others do not support synchronization. Crucially, these new media and protocol gateway converters also enable organizations to scale across rooms, buildings, or regions without having to overhaul existing infrastructure.

Cloud-based processing is another growing trend. Rather than housing all media handling and signal routing on premise, some command centers are now using cloud platforms to manage content distribution between remote sites. This not only simplifies workflows but also supports greater agility, especially in multi-site operations.

Designing for Operational Priorities

On a practical level, the adoption of IP also changes how control rooms are designed, deployed, managed, and scaled. Within a single room, for example, priorities typically focus on high performance, low latency, and seamless operator control. In these environments, minimal compression and high-bandwidth networks can be used to maintain responsiveness, particularly for audio and video switching or real-time decision-making.

However, as systems scale across multiple rooms or facilities, the equation shifts. Bandwidth efficiency, network security, and centralized control become more important, especially when content needs to be shared between departments or across geographic locations. In these scenarios, organizations must consider how to manage media routing, bandwidth constraints, and access permissions without compromising performance.

Take the challenges associated with synchronization, for example. In live environments, even slight delays between audio and video, such as when a speaker’s voice reaches an audience before or after their image does, can create a distracting and uncomfortable experience. Audio systems often require precise timing, especially when distributing signals across multiple rooms or between left and right speakers, where any misalignment can be problematic.

Operational requirements are also changing, with the integration of services such as Microsoft Teams and Zoom bringing content from IT systems directly into command center AV environments. As a result, the synergies between Pro AV signaling assets rooted in the automation of batch behaviors for endpoints like microphones, cameras, speakers, and displays—with IT department assets like PCs, smartphones, and tablets—are becoming increasingly influential in how media infrastructure is designed and governed. What used to require video walls and media processing equipment to show mixtures of content types to decision makers and live operations overseers in control rooms is now more flexible, spanning large-format displays when helpful, but it can also be personalized to individual operator seats with "personal video wall" capabilities.

Wherever the specific priorities lie for each command center, the underlying requirement is maintaining uptime—they must be able to display the right information at the right time without fail. But as protocols evolve and equipment life cycles diverge, technology teams must apply a flexible approach built on a combination of open standards and vendor-agnostic media gateways, ensuring systems remain operational and aligned with performance objectives.

Open standards matter because they give organizations more control over how their systems evolve. Rather than being locked into proprietary technologies, teams can integrate best-of-breed tech that balances performance with budget, a compelling argument for anyone focused on delivering effective command center infrastructure.

The constant evolution of video resolutions and standards, combined with advancements in USB technology, continue to drive the development of KVM (keyboard, video, and mouse) control systems. When deployed properly, KVM systems should provide access to systems that reside in different rooms, facilities, and geographical locations.

“In order to satisfy the expectations of contemporary connectivity, this core competency propels continuous innovation in KVM systems, giving priority to the effective, high-speed transmission of ultra-high-resolution video and USB extension with low latency,” said David Isola, director of global product marketing at Black Box.

[MustangVision Struts Into ACC]

IP-based KVM/DMS (display management systems) are incorporating new developments in transmission and control technology. Dan Holland, marketing manager at IHSE, points to the JPEG XS standard, which combines ultra-fast transmission and extremely low latency (in the sub-millisecond range) for transport over SMPTE 2110 networks.

At Matrox Video, Caroline Injoyan, business development manager, highlights the IPMX set of proposed open standards designed to facilitate interoperability on AV-over-IP infrastructure with a single platform. Based on SMPTE ST 2110 and AMWA NMOS—standards that are commonly applied in broadcast—IPMX also includes specifications that address Pro AV deployments.

“[It’s] an open standard for AV-over-IP distribution, but it also applies to KVM technology,” Injoyan explained. “This is going to be a game changer because this means that if you can have a KVM system that’s based on an open standard, it will no longer be a closed system. It can more easily receive audio and video signals from other IPMX devices. It’s going to simplify both receiving a video stream as well as sending [signals] to other types of Pro AV products.”

Changing Demands

In broadcast and post, 4K (and, in some cases, 8K) adoption is driving features such as HDR and high bit rate resolutions. This is placing increased demand on KVM infrastructure and distribution systems, Holland noted. “Users are now demanding better picture quality and operational performance for latency-free operations,” he said.

With DMS, multiple monitors can be connected to a single workstation, which results in improved workflows. IHSE’s 4K/8K extenders let users either mirror their desktop to another monitor or stretch their desktop over two displays for better visibility. “With the expanded desktop, the increase in available workspace means users can work with multiple applications simultaneously without crowding the screen,” Holland added.

Not all facilities have the real estate for banks of monitors, each dedicated to a single source. Jochen Bauer, global director of sales and product management at Guntermann & Drunck (G&D), said that the introduction of picture-in-picture capabilities addresses this issue.

“You can have a huge workplace where you can operate all the screens with just one keyboard and mouse, making it more intuitive for the operator,” Bauer explained. “And with today’s picture-in-picture solutions, we can also help to declutter the desk by [having just] one screen, or a lower number of larger screens.”

Ergonomically, too many screens deployed in a wide configuration across a room can make it difficult for operators to view data on the far right and left of the monitor bank. “Picture-in-picture applications offer many great opportunities for modern control room and modern operations,” Bauer said.

Improving Environments

At its core, a successful esports competition is delay-free. “The biggest challenge for setting up a competitive esports tournament is simultaneously maintaining the player’s bandwidth and frame rates while reducing the amount of interactive latency from the player’s keyboard and mouse,” Holland explained. This is because even a 1ms delay could result in that player losing the competition. Generally, professional gamers play at 120fps (and sometimes 240fps), which Holland said requires "splitting the signals to feed the streaming channel without disturbing the frame rates on the players’ computers.”

Esports productions mandate the capture of action in real time in non-broadcast resolutions and frame rates. Engineers must achieve this without overburdening the players’ CPUs and graphics GPUs with added software processing. “Producers of esports must be able to switch between real-world, non-broadcast resolutions and frame rates without disturbing fast-action coverage that is streamed live to services like Twitch or YouTube,” Holland offered.

Like esports environments, command and control applications require KVM systems to enable real-time response and the support of multiple high-resolution displays. Isola noted that they must be fully scalable to accommodate future needs and incorporate redundancy and failover options for 24/7 reliability. Integrators also need to consider the human operators that will be interacting with this technology.

“The system should integrate easily with existing hardware, have user-friendly interfaces, and take ergonomics into account for operator efficiency and situational/environmental awareness,” Isola said. “Most importantly, command and control centers must be carefully designed with ergonomics in mind to reduce the number of incidents caused by human error.”

The command and control environment often features diverse systems sourced from a variety of different computer and server manufacturers, each providing their own specific displays and interfaces. In this scenario, operators are obligated to move between any number of standalone systems and keyboards. Holland argued that DMS that support extended display identification data (EDID) can make this more efficient.

Cybersecurity and Convergence

With the cybersecurity threat landscape growing more and more malicious, the systems AV professionals deploy need to be robust. “Systems integrators who design control rooms need to ensure the right products are used to support customer cybersecurity policies, including all subsystems and components, against the potential risk of attack and exploitation of vulnerabilities,” Holland warned.

At the same time, he argued for more open-source solutions that allow for improved capture, gathering, processing, and distribution of data. “As systems designers walk the line between accessibility and security," he added, "they have found KVM switching to be an effective means [of streamlining] data access while maintaining an important level of security and data quality.”

[AVoIP: Beyond the Buzzword]

With a foundation in IT, KVM has evolved into a more AV-focused product category. “KVM originally came from the IT world, but over time grew very much into the AV world, as now our core transmission signals are AV-related signals—mainly the video that we are transmitting,” Bauer said. “Nowadays, we see it as an AV component or an AV system, but with that IT background.”

Design Considerations for KVM

Regardless of the application, AV designers and integrators must assess a number of different factors for a successful KVM systems implementation. According to Black Box’s David Isola, this includes bandwidth and cabling requirements, as well as monitor specifications and video resolutions. They also need to take into account any special connection requirements and the number of users and sources.

Of course, achieving ultra-low latency is paramount. “Latency delays can be disastrous, especially in broadcast game scenarios,” Isola said. “Furthermore, because it affects system performance and design, the physical distance between users and sources is an important factor.”

Network infrastructure considerations are also part of the equation. “For example, trying to run a KVM system or AV system that depends on 10G on a 1G network infrastructure may cause serious compatibility and performance problems,” Isola noted.

A doctor or Mulan. If you had asked a young Catherine Koutsaris what her career ambitions were, you would have likely been told one of those two options. Instead, it turns out she’s building a career in Pro AV utilizing her engineering skills.

Koutsaris earned her degree in mechanical engineering at McGill University in Montreal, but she wasn’t that kid who was taking apart the toaster to see how it worked. She had many interests, including law, but decided that a degree in mechanical engineering would open the most doors for her.

“I chose to be an engineer so that I didn’t have to be an engineer for long,” she offered. “Critical thinking, problem solving—you can apply that to succeed in any industry.”

Engineer or not, Koutsaris loves technology. “I hate the limiting mindset of ‘we’ve always done it this way,’” she said. “It bothers me. There’s always room for improvement and technology allows for that. Quality of life improves because we can use technology to make everyday things better.”

Today, Koutsaris has combined her love of technology with the commercial side of engineering. At Matrox, that training has certainly been an asset. Koutsaris began the current leg of her career journey last month, when she was promoted to product marketing manager. She’s excited for the new role, which will let her tell the story of the entire Matrox portfolio, not just one product, and how the products work well together.

Like so many others, Koutsaris found herself in Pro AV by accident. She was working in the aerospace industry working on software for flight simulators. “I loved it. I thought I was going to be an aerospace queen,” she recalled.

Then came COVID-19. And a layoff. She learned Matrox was hiring and submitted her resume. Koutsaris started with the company as a testing engineer in 2020 and was promoted to product manager the next year. “I ended up loving it,” she said. “It launched a totally new career path for me.”

Even though she’s not working strictly as an engineer, she works with engineers all the time. In her product manager role, she played the middleman between the engineering team, sales team, marketing team, and trade show team—always keeping the needs of the customer top of mind. Plus, she gave product demos and talked directly with customers to better understand their workflows so she could recommend solutions. “It’s a very diverse set of tasks,” she added. “That’s why I love it. No two days are alike.” In fact, her efforts were acknowledged last month during an awards ceremony at the 2025 NAB Show.

Koutsaris is also active in encouraging women to consider careers in technology and specifically the Pro AV industry. At the end of the day, she said it’s about representation and trying to make everyone feel included.

“When I was in engineering, we were such a small group of women. I never really saw role models that were like me,” she explained. “As my career path evolved and as I got more involved in committees and networking events, I’ve enjoyed meeting brilliant, bold and inspiring women from all walks of life – proving that your own uniqueness is often the key to your own success.”

Koutsaris shared one piece of advice for professionals who are starting their own Pro AV journeys: “Do not take advice from someone who isn’t where you want to be.” She said people have been quick to offer her advice over the years, but she doesn’t feel compelled to take it. “Being discerning is crucial,” she added. “Trust your choices and intuition.”

Digital Projection Unleashes the Power of1-Chip DLP Technology

Digital Projection will paint Barcelona red (and green, and blue), showcasing its new 1-chip projectors, which incorporate Texas Instruments’ ground-breaking High-Efficiency-Pixel (HEP) DMD for never-before-seen color accuracy and native contrast, as well as its Nexus electronics platform

Under the banner of its new campaign, We Love Color, the Digital Projection Booth (3K700, in ISE Hall 3) will center on the color reproduction offered by the company’s  new 1-chip DLP projectors: the E-Vision 16000i-WU and E-Vision RGB 4K+. 

Powered by a 0.8-inch HEP digital micromirror device (DMD), the E-Vision 16000i-WU features increased mirror tilt angle for improved light efficiency and ‘filled via’ technology for higher native contrast, delivering unprecedented image quality, brightness and efficiency. The new E-Vision RGB represents a further leap forward in 1-chip projection technology, achieving the full REC 2020 color space at 4K+ resolution, for cinematic-grade visuals without the artifacts associated with traditional 1-chip DLP projectors with color wheels. With 10,000 lumens and HDR support, the RGB laser-illuminated E-Vision RGB delivers stunningly realistic visuals with dynamic contrast ratios of up to 10,000:1.

Where once the complex installations that required advanced warp and blend were reliant on expensive third-party applications, Digital Projection’s recently introduced software tech stack—powered by its next-generation electronics platform, Nexus—allows customers to design and implement an entire installation entirely within the projector ecosystem. On display at ISE will be several Nexus-powered tools, including Advanced Align, Projector Controller II and Multi Projection Simulator Pro, which visitors to the Digital Projection booth will have the opportunity to demo in a dedicated software area.

Just Add Power to Amp Up the AV-Over-IP Experience

Integrators visiting Just Add Power's booth 2R600 will have the first look at the new MaxColor USB 2.0 over IP device (MC-USB), which provides access to all computers on the system with KVM support. Highlights at the booth will also include the MC-QX MaxColor 4K60 Tiling and Warping Transmitter and other products from the award-winning MaxColor family.

Taking center stage at ISE will be Just Add Power’s MC-USB, with two USB-C 2.0 ports on the front, one UBC-C 2.0 on the back, and two USB-A 2.0 on the front, all integrated into the system over 1Gb LAN. Compatible with Just Add Power’s renowned MaxColor series, the MC-USB provides access to all computers on the system with built-in keyboard, video, mouse (KVM) support, including touchscreen and webcam interface.

Also at the booth will be the Just Add Power MaxColor 4K60 Tiling and Warping Transmitter (MC-QX), combining the company's MaxColor technology, 4K network video tiler, and video rotating technology. Users can simultaneously watch up to four 4K60 video sources in multiple formats on a single display, including single-screen or tiled video in a variety of layouts. With the MC-QX warping capability, installers can rotate any source image in a Just Add Power matrix—cable boxes, media players, game systems, cameras, and more — in 0.1-degree increments in real time with incredibly low latency. Black Box Showcases Advanced IP KVM Solutions

Black Box will showcase its advanced IP KVM solutions at Hall 5, Booth D700, providing systems integrators, control room designers, live event producers, and Pro AV and broadcast professionals with innovative tools to enhance workflow efficiency, scalability and collaboration. Matrox Video has officially entered the IP video gateway market with the introduction of Matrox Vion, a high-density IP video gateway, and a new update for the Matrox ConvertIP DSH SMPTE ST 2110 and IPMX transmitter/receiver.

In building internal IT architectures, IT managers traditionally have looked to guidance from standards bodies such as the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force), which has developed technical and engineering documents designed to make the internet work better. Because the techniques outlined in such standards focus on bandwidth-limited internet connections, an IT infrastructure built in this manner is not equipped to support the increasing number of internal real-time LAN users today who need more.

[Security Breaches, Vulnerabilities & Privacy for IPMX]

Whether working with motion video or the highest fidelity captures of live desktops, these users are not satisfied with seeing inferior images on their screens. In emerging use cases, such as AI-driven analysis in medical imaging and other fields, exceptional real-time images with detail invisible to the human eye are proving indispensable. After all, "visually lossless” compression eliminates the very detail that enables AI to identify patterns that humans cannot.

Fortunately, the bandwidth of LANs is increasing dramatically, both as delivered to the desktop and in multiple network layers above endpoints, while the cost of required network elements is falling. Internet bandwidth is increasing, too, with most countries rolling out 1 Gbps or more to the home.

Thus, for the quickly growing number of real-time video users who expect more and demand better, shared 1 Gbps to the desktop suddenly looks old and inadequate. These users want to exploit the greater speed available today, and to do so over a network architecture designed for streaming and capable of supporting sustained traffic rather than bursty traffic. IT managers must negotiate this trend, as well as the fact that average network traffic is increasing and will continue to do so.

Leveraging Protocols

Because low-bandwidth video streaming remains perfect for many desktop applications, the progressive IT manager needs both an architecture and set of protocols that can support the needs of different users: low-bandwidth streamers and users requiring a better desktop experience of their high-performance content. Facing this challenge, the IT manager can expand their view to include the work of a different set of standards organizations that have been aggregating the needs of a variety of users. Organizations like the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), Advanced Media Workflow Association (AWMA), and Video Services Forum (VSF) have cooperated to create standards for moving media over IP networks, enabling organizations to leverage modern IT protocols and infrastructure more effectively for various applications.

[The Integration Guide to AVoIP 2024]

Supporting design and implementation of networks with consideration of capacity, bandwidth, quality of service, security, and resilience, standards such as SMPTE ST 2110 help IT managers to handle evolving bandwidth requirements and deploy devices with sufficient throughput to handle future demands. Inclusion of the IEEE 1588 standard's Precision Time Protocol (PTP) in the ST 2110 standard allows for synchronization of clocks throughout the network, with sub-microsecond accuracy on a LAN.

PTP has become a powerful tool for ensuring ultra-accurate time distribution within a network, effectively aligning all participating devices to a single time source. As a result, the protocol has become increasingly important in telecommunications, finance, healthcare, industrial automation, and broadcasting—environments that demand high precision and synchronization.

Building on foundational work from ST 2110, the AWMA, VSF, Joint Taskforce of Networked Media (JT-NM), and Alliance for IP Media Solutions (AIMS) defined the new Internet Protocol Media Experience (IPMX) set of open specifications to provide essential interoperability for AV-over-IP. IPMX enables the carriage of compressed and uncompressed video, audio, and data over IP networks, making AVoIP workflows more accessible and easier to use.

As an open standard that fully addresses interoperability crossing network bandwidth, IPMX supports workflows based on different codecs, different compression requirements, and different types of connectivity, joining all those aspects so that organizations don't find themselves backed into a silo where their only choice is to invest further in existing systems. Importantly, it uses PTP if it is there, but if the architecture is not PTP friendly, IPMX works in alternate modes.

Final Specs

In a landmark event for the Pro AV industry, the VSF collaborated with AIMS to undertake a rigorous VSF testing event. Held earlier this year at the Matrox Video facility in Munich, the event engaged multiple manufacturers with IPMX implementations to validate core specifications. Through this event, many of the essential IPMX documents—encompassing critical aspects of audio and video transport, HDCP, control plane requirements, and system timing—were taken from draft to finalized specifications.

This transition started at the top with uncompressed video, and it has been proceeding down through lightly compressed on a 10 GbE network, moderately compressed video on a 1 GbE network, and toward highly compressed formats, such as H.264, NDI, and all universal communications. Across all these formats, IT managers working with IPMX can follow the standards and know that their systems will be compatible and give them future options.

The elevation of key documents from the VSF is accelerating adoption by both manufacturers and end users. As IPMX is implemented by an increasing number of manufacturers, a robust, open AVoIP ecosystem will arise. Within this ecosystem, organizations are free from the limitations of working with specific chips or intellectual property. Instead, they have a point of reference that provides guidance for any decisions that need to be made in building out AVoIP. Working with a widely accepted open standard, IT managers can design against that reference and lay out a future direction for technical growth or evolution.

While Matrox Video has been a major driver of IPMX along with other AIMS members, the strength of IPMX comes from the fact that it originates in the standards world. No single manufacturer dominates the shape or scope of the standard. As a result, IPMX provides a standards-based approach that accommodates a broad array of users working with motion video or high-fidelity captures of live desktops.

Earlier this year, numerous implementations, both in hardware and software, showcased accelerated adoption of IPMX. One notable advance has been the wholesale adoption of IPMX by the fast-growing LED sector, where panels increasingly must support the highest video quality (uncompressed). And now, leading LED wall controller vendors have committed to providing IPMX support. This is a significant development for IPMX, as the standards and specifications continue to drive the future of video transport over IP.

[IPMX Unpacked: The Key Documents Shaping the Future of AV-over-IP]

IPMX is emerging as a comprehensive solution for handling AVoIP, and its evolution promises to bring value to organizations that need to accommodate increasing demand for real-time, high-performance images and video, as well as rising traffic and increasing pressure on network infrastructure. Ongoing work addresses aspects such as interoperable USB extension, profiles, detailed testing requirements, and more. While IPMX is still on its way to becoming a fully realized open standard, it already offers IT managers and their organizations a clear, well-designed, and scalable framework for high-quality, low-latency, and affordable video and audio transport over an IP network—as well as normal corporate IT traffic. 

NDI has announced the release of NDI 6, a key update set to significantly impact content creation and broadcasting. With native HDR support and expanded WAN connectivity for hardware, NDI 6 addresses critical industry requirements while pushing the boundaries of visual quality and remote workflows.

[NDI Reigns over AVoIP Protocols]

NDI 6 will be showcased in Las Vegas later this month at 2024 NAB Show (Booth SL5061). Daniel Nergård, president of NDI, will also deliver an exclusive keynote presentation at the JB&A Pre-NAB Technology Event on Saturday, April 13, at the LINQ Hotel. During his address, he will examine the technology’s advancements and provide insights into the company's future.

Equipped with native HDR and 10+ bit color support, NDI 6 meets broadcast industry demands for professional-grade video streaming over IP and making broadcast-quality streaming widely available. The update empowers broadcasters and content creators with higher contrast, which expands brightness headroom. Plus, it offers wide color gamut and minimal color banding, which ensures seamless transitions and gradients, as well as broad compatibility with support for PQ and HLG formats, expanding streaming to most HDR and non-HDR devices.

WAN connectivity is now embedded into cameras through an NDI Bridge utility for hardware. This plug-and-play solution promises a significant impact on the flexibility of remote productions and setups, offering a seamless experience for anyone sending and receiving video, regardless of device, platform, or location. The new feature allows devices to send encrypted NDI streams over a WAN, facilitating secure, remote real-time collaboration between locations. NDI-enabled cameras with the Bridge utility can join remote networks without depending on additional software or tools.

Results have led to the successful integration of NDI 6 into both existing and forthcoming products.

"The feedback from our customers and beta testers played a pivotal role in developing NDI 6. Educational facilities worldwide are turning to AV-over-IP solutions to save money while improving communication and collaboration. TAFE Queensland, one of Australia’s largest vocational education and training providers, is no exception. The organization continually strives to modernize its facilities and infrastructure to provide its students with the best possible learning environment—one comprised of both in-person and online resources. The installation of Matrox Maevex 6020 Remote Recorders is just one of the latest examples of how TAFE Queensland is using technology to enhance its educational offerings. 

Matrox Video spoke with Daniel Hausin, project manager of Media Systems and Support at TAFE Queensland, about the training provider’s use of Matrox Maevex 6020 Remote Recorders and how they’ve helped to improve the institution’s ability to record, distribute, and manage educational content. 

Video Management

TAFE Queensland’s South Bank Campus in Brisbane contains a demonstration kitchen for its culinary programs managed by Le Cordon Bleu, where lectures are recorded daily. For this setup, TAFE Queensland required a new approach to video management that met all the organization’s criteria, from the correct certification to the desired features. Ultimately, TAFE went with Matrox Maevex 6020 Remote Recorders to capture and record their lectures. 

TAFE Queensland’s solution for video management would have several requirements, including being Panopto certified. A Panopto-certified hardware device has been tested and proven to work seamlessly with the Panopto video management system, a software TAFE Queensland uses to record, edit, and share video content. Fully integrated with Panopto, Maevex 6020 is purpose-built for capturing, encoding, and streaming live and recorded video. 

The video management solution would also require dual-input recording, allowing two sources to be recorded simultaneously. For TAFE Queensland, this is a useful feature of Maevex 6020 for creating training materials, as they often use more than one camera to record their lectures. 

The school required a solution that would work with their existing setup so they could easily swap out units without reconfiguring their network. A selling point for TAFE Queensland was that Maevex 6020 contains an HDMI connection, which was crucial as it allows for the connection of the units using the cabling they already have in place. 

Maevex 6020 also comes at an attractive price point, making it an excellent option for budget-conscious organizations. It is also easy to install and register, which avoids the need to hire expensive consultants. 

TAFE Queensland decided to outfit campuses with Maevex 6020 units to capture, stream, and record lectures for live viewing and on-demand playback from any location. A Maevex 6020 has been deployed in Le Cordon Bleu’s demonstration kitchen, enabling them to record four lectures per day, typically back-to-back. 

Improving Operational Efficiencies and Reduce Costs

TAFE Queensland described the setup of the Maevex 6020 as simple, with the device being quickly integrated into the Institute’s network (LAN). The teachers required little instruction on how to use the Maevex 6020 to schedule their classes for recording. Once the unit was set up and hidden in the rack, it did not need to be touched again since it could be monitored and managed remotely. 

After six months, the school reported the Maevex 6020 remote recorders have helped the organization improve operational efficiencies and reduce costs. The recordings have also benefited students and staff, providing a valuable resource for learning and reference. 

“Having the recording available supports the learning of all students, especially those who may have difficulties with English literacy,” Jerome Magisson, a teacher at Le Cordon Bleu who regularly performs tutorials in the demonstration kitchen said. “Students can also use the high-resolution videos to watch the key technical aspects of our course. At Le Cordon Bleu, we noticed that the students who improve the most during their 30 weeks of study are the ones who access video recordings regularly.” 

Overall, Maevex 6020 has been a positive addition to TAFE Queensland by allowing the Institute to deliver content with ease, as well as enhance the remote learning experience for all students. 

More than 50 years ago, with his bachelor's and master's degrees in engineering from McGill University in hand, Lorne Trottier was looking to discover his career calling. He got his start in the television broadcast equipment industry working with John Ross, who would later launch Ross Video (and whose son, David, is a Hall of Fame honoree this year as well).

His initial experience was critical when Trottier founded Matrox, known for its pioneering hardware and software solutions for various high-tech industries. It led to the development of innovative product lines, first supporting the broadcast industry and eventually crossing into the world of Pro AV.

"You look today and there are quite a few companies that make products that overlap between broadcast and AV, and there's a lot of commonality," said Trottier. "We've been making broadcast products for many years, and AV is a natural extension of that."

Trottier founded Matrox in 1976—and his most significant sense of pride is that they are still delivering innovative solutions after all this time, especially considering the technological advancements that have occurred in the industry.

"There's been some very dramatic paradigm shifts," he added. "I'm a tech geek at heart, so I enjoy the challenges presented by our technological advances and learning to develop products and innovations based on those things. I'm proud that we've mastered many of these technological transitions over time, and we're still open for business and having fun."

With the industry experiencing a major continuous shift to AV-over-IP, Matrox has focused on the development of IPMX, a proposed set of open standards and specifications that address the need for a common set of ubiquitous standards and protocols in the transition to IP infrastructures. The company is investing in a new product line of AV infrastructure products based on IPMX, which it will introduce over the coming year and preview at ISE Expo 2024 in Barcelona.

"Many proprietary standards are on the market right now," Trottier explained. "I'm very hopeful that this IPMX standard will be widely adopted. The products we're developing around that have a lot of innovation in them, and I'm hoping we'll be very successful with that."

With many developing proprietary codecs and streaming protocols, Matrox is also honing in on standardized codecs that are more universally available within its IPMX products. Many graphics processing units on the market today contain a powerful built-in codec engine, but these capabilities are not widely used. "That's one of the things we hope to bring to the market and help shake things up a bit," Trottier added.

For those looking to grow within the industry and contribute to future innovations, Trottier recommended being like him: a self-proclaimed tech geek at heart. "It's good to love technology because you have to keep learning new things all the time," he said. "You have to be prepared to be learning all the time and figuring out how to innovate with the new technology that comes along."

Matrox Video has launched the Matrox KMLync USB keyboard and mouse switch, which enables users to control multiple systems, or Matrox Extio 3 IP KVM devices, from their control rooms through a single keyboard/mouse setup.

Available as a stand-alone keyboard and mouse switch or as an accessory to the Extio 3 IP KVM product line, KMLync enables seamless mouse switching between up to four different input sources (KVM or other). When combined with Extio 3 IP KVM extenders, KMLync enables new workflows for larger multimonitor workspaces. Matrox Video has partnered partnership with Danish video surveillance equipment manufacturer Ernitec to develop a video wall offering, which will be sold exclusively through Ernitec's European distributor, EET Group, alongside the rest of Ernitec's workstations and servers. The collaboration was a natural fit considering EET already represents the Matrox Video product range. With a Matrox Video/Ernitec video wall offering, EET's sales team can cater to full-service Pro AV system integrators and resellers with an additional, ready-to-go video wall package. The flexibility of Matrox's video wall products presents many new market opportunities for EET and for Matrox Video.

Like Ernitec's video surveillance server range, the Matrox Video/Ernitec solution offers a modular approach to building video walls on demand—whether someone needs a small, four-display wall with simple layout management or a large wall that can capture incoming signals from various different sources. Matrox Video's use of nonproprietary IP-encoding/decoding standards enables AV-over-IP RTSP and SRT streaming, which makes it possible to display any video source at any destination.

European software developer Arbor launched a new IP SMPTE 2110 standards-based software portfolio built on Matrox ST 2110 hardware and software technologies. Leveraging Matrox Video's latest-generation ST 2110 network interface controller (NIC) cards and native support for the ST 2110 specification, Arbor’s new IP-based video management solutions support a wide range of recording and streaming applications for Europe's leading government agencies and organizations.

Arbor solutions provide government organizations with broadcast-grade audio and video recordings while enabling users with complete control over all audio and video content. A user-friendly interface allows authorized users to search and exchange metadata information—including dates, agenda points, speaker and lecture notes—for a streamlined content management experience.

Matrox Video expanded the display layout options and Full HD display support with its Extio 3 IP KVM extenders’ Tile View feature to provide users with new productivity-enhancing remote workspace configurations. Compatible with a standard one Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) networking infrastructure, Extio 3 uniquely enables both on-site and off-site users to control multiple server-room-centralized systems over LAN, WAN, and internet.  

Extio 3 delivers today’s most advanced security features for IP KVMs, including AES encryption of audio, video, and USB signals; user authentication; safe firmware updates; and an IPSec VPN client in the receiver appliance for secure remote operations over internet.

We have been working to enable hybrid and remote environments in a variety of industries. Education has new requirements to support remote and in person classrooms and lecture halls. Entertainment has been revolutionized, with new immersive and mixed reality experiences. Office spaces and meeting rooms have transformed to support the hybrid work environment and focus on creating new collaboration spaces.

For more than 35 years, we have developed our expertise as a KVM manufacturer and are looking forward to showcasing our latest KVM solutions at InfoComm 2022. We use our experience to create the best possible working conditions for control room staff and technicians, which we achieve with our broad, interoperable KVM portfolio. KVM makes it possible to operate multiple physically separated computers from different workstations, thus optimizing the IT infrastructure. Therefore, we place great value on ensuring that users can always rely on the technology running in the background and that focused and intuitive work is possible in control rooms. At InfoComm, visitors will be able to see the latest product highlights from G&D in real-world applications and experience the usability of the products.

The new, high-performance KVM-over-IP extender VisionXS utilizes standard Ethernet networks with up to 10-Gbit bandwidth and therefore requires much less compression at higher display resolutions. G&D's proprietary lossless video compression bluedec transmits pixel-perfect resolutions up to 4K60 and improves the user experience. As a special highlight, the integrated IP-MUX function lets a console device manage multiple target IP addresses from up to 20 computer sources without additional hardware. For simpler applications, the on-screen display can be used to switch between different sources.

To enable employees in control rooms to keep an eye on all content, various screens can be displayed on one large monitor. Particularly exciting for this purpose is the PersonalWorkplace-Controller, a multi-viewing tool that allows up to 26 video sources to be displayed and operated on a single screen depending on the application. AV professionals benefit from a flexible layout, with image quality up to 4K60. The PWC optimizes workflows, where multiple signals need to be monitored. Combining a KVM system with the PWC ensures secure, high-performance, and flexible access to all relevant computer systems. It is also possible to use the PersonalWorkplace-Controller to display the sources on a large video wall.

It’s been quite a while since SurgeX last hit the InfoComm show floor, but despite how technologies (and everything else) have evolved over the past couple years, one thing remains consistent: Power anomalies are a risk to electronics all over—from the home office to the corporate boardroom to the dealer showroom. A strong power foundation must be in place to keep things up and running. Homes and commercial spaces both rely on more technology than ever, and for InfoComm 2022, SurgeX is excited to bring forth a portfolio of trusted power protection solutions that safeguard AV equipment, ensure performance continuity, and enable remote monitoring. 

The award-winning SQUID power management system will be on display at the SurgeX booth. Providing AC/DC power protection, boxed network control, and analytical software in one compact chassis, SQUID streamlines installation of the most highly sought-after and critical power management and monitoring tools for electronics and AV systems. Integrators no longer have to install a product for AC, another for DC, and yet another to monitor and control the power environment. It is the perfect solution for collaborative flex environments, huddle spaces, and other tight-spaced AV settings.

SurgeX will also display its new line of UPS solutions with built-in isolation transformers. Available in three models, the line-interactive, cost-effective UPS + Isolation Transformer line safeguards sensitive connected equipment by eliminating neutral-ground voltage, reducing lockups, and mitigating downtime by completely isolating connected equipment from the grid and other electronic loads that can pollute the branch circuit. They feature a true sine wave interactive UPS to filter, condition, and stabilize power while simultaneously providing all the benefits of low-impedance isolation transformer technology at the rack level. The SurgeX UPS + Isolation Transformer solutions are virtually silent, making them an ideal match for showrooms, audio systems, and other sound-reliant installations.

As we continue to move forward and transition our lives to blend the remote, physical, and virtual into hybrid environments at work and school, the efforts to find suitable collaboration solutions will be ongoing. 

Hybrid environments are an amalgam of fluidity. There is no fixed plan or one-size-fits-all strategy anymore. Just how does a solution provider or manufacturer operate in these new environments? Basically, we work together and offer products and services that meet the demands of these hybrid settings, both in the workspace and in the classroom. We need to deliver products that can be smart and connect employees, teachers, and students. We also need to support our AV partners by designing products that continue to evolve with the changing needs of their customers.

At InfoComm 2022, I believe that we’ll see products and services that accommodate the fluidity of the hybrid environment and fusion of flexible solutions—more interactive and larger screens, products to facilitate collaboration and communication, and products that support a hybrid life. ViewSonic, for example, will be introducing the next generation of ViewBoard interactive displays with the IFP62 and IFP52 series. They are ideal collaboration products that allow businesses and schools to create connected spaces and help teams collaborate. Other products will include portable monitors for added convenience. 

ViewSonic has developed display solutions that can fit in with ever-changing environments. Our AV partners need to have products that are adaptable to their customers’ needs, from seamless connectivity and interactive tools to collaborative technologies and software that allow people to participate in the office, classroom, home, or on the road.

Brompton Technology is a specialty manufacturer of LED processors based in London, UK. Since 2012, we’ve been delivering world-class products, with a heavy focus on customers in live events and concert touring. The road-worthiness proven in these areas have helped us make a name for ourselves as the most dependable option LED processing. We also bring a feature set and ease of use that is truly second to none. This is born out in the fact that the very first processors we delivered, 10 years ago, can still be found in working rental inventories today. Those early products are still capable of being updated, as well! 

At InfoComm 2022, we’ll be showing our full range of processors, from the HD-compatible S4 and T1, to our 4K S8 and flagship SX40 units. 

At Brompton, we never stop improving and innovating. One recent example is our Hydra camera measurement system, a product we created due to the lack of capabilities found in off-the-shelf calibration systems for LED. Hydra turns the legacy calibration process on its head, and by truly understanding what each LED on a panel is capable of, our processors are able to achieve a very high level of performance, especially when dealing with HDR sources. We call this process Dynamic Calibration. 

In addition to hardware developments, we’re constantly pushing new feature updates (always free of charge!) in our Tessera software. Over the past couple of years, we’ve found our products being used heavily in broadcast, XR, and virtual production for film. So, our most recently added features have been quality-of-life improvements for using LED in-camera. Some of these latest features are Frame Remapping, ShutterSync, 3D LUT, and camera tracking implementations. Please stop by our booth to say hello and check out the latest developments!

The concept of the workplace is changing. It is no longer all about work (in the sense of routine tasks) or about place. Instead, organizations are beginning to embrace the concept of a more flexible approach, where employees’ homes are the place to get things done and the office is the place to figure things out. We are seeing this happen at Intel, where many employees have been given the opportunity to continue to base themselves at home—returning to the office for those activities that benefit from face-to-face interaction, such as collaboration. To keep talented employees, organizations will need to evolve, and the more quickly and seamlessly they can adapt, the more successful they will be. A big part of this evolution will involve the rethinking, and the adding, of collaboration spaces.

The philosophy behind the Intel Unite solution is based on the recognition that evolution is constant, and to meet customers’ needs for fast, frictionless adaptation, a product must not only be able to evolve, but it must be designed to evolve. That’s why our software-based, cloud-delivered collaboration solution uses an open and extensible architecture that allows the seamless integration of a growing library of collaboration-enhancing apps, some developed by Intel, some by our partners, and some—like the new Bose VB1 video bar app—developed jointly. It’s why we offer a publicly available SDK that gives IT and solution partners the freedom to develop custom solutions. 

At InfoComm, we’ll demonstrate not only app integrations like the newly released Google Meet app, but also the many other features that make the Intel Unite solution uniquely adaptable. We’ll also show why it is well positioned for a BYOM world where collaborators must switch seamlessly between in-room, remote, and hybrid scenarios, and where collaboration spaces can vary from touchdown spaces to boardrooms.

Thought Leader: Sam Recine, Chair, Pro AV Working Group, AIMS

At InfoComm, AIMS will host its first live interoperability demonstration of Internet Protocol Media Experience (IPMX)—a set of standards-based protocols designed to ensure interoperability for AV over IP. This first-of-a-kind demo will feature networking equipment and hardware and software nodes running both IPMX and SMPTE ST 2110, the standards suite on which IPMX is based. The demo will also highlight gateways between IPMX and other protocols, developer kits, and elements of IPMX-enabled AV-over-IP workflows. 

With this demo at InfoComm 2022, we're passing a critical milestone on the AIMS roadmap for open-standards-based media over IP. We're demonstrating the technical viability of IPMX in terms of multivendor interoperability, and that is pretty exciting! 

Also significant is the high level of industry support the demo signals. Leading manufacturers are building IPMX support into their products, and more companies are continually joining those ranks as we move toward a more flexible, dynamic, IP-based future for pro AV.

Demo partners include Arista Networks, Cisco Systems, intoPix SA, Macnica, Matrox, Ross Video Limited, STAGETEC GmbH, and many others.

IPMX implements a standards-based approach based on SMPTE ST 2110, with features and capabilities that target the specific needs of the pro AV industry. In addition to simplifying implementation of SMPTE ST 2110 and ensuring interoperability for AV-over-IP systems, IPMX incorporates other features tailored to pro AV installations. These features include AMWA NMOS IS-04 and IS-05 for discovery, registration, and connection management, as well as specifications for copy protection and security.

We’re celebrating our 30th anniversary in 2022, with most of those years spent delivering AV-over-IP distribution solutions. Our design philosophy is to respect the investment that customers make in their AV systems with products that last and systems that can be upgraded or modified as new features arrive. Scalability and flexibility are key, as Just Add Power systems can be expanded as needed and have the features and abilities to solve system design problems that arise from facility layout, zone requirements, and the desire to wow. Those themes continue to guide the formation of our products, services, and partnerships, which attendees will see and experience at InfoComm. 

First up is our new, award-winning MaxColor 4K60 Series. It natively supports 4K60 in and out to allow end users to play Ultra HD video from the growing number of 4K sources and devices on the market. We released this product last year and people couldn’t wait for it to ship!

Our Warp Engine transmitter took home the best of show award at InfoComm 2021 in Orlando, and we’re excited to have it displayed in Las Vegas for anyone who didn’t have the opportunity to experience it. The latest specialized product in our 3G Ultra line, the Warp Engine can rotate video in 0.1-degree increments, to single screens or video walls, to allow screens to be mounted at any angle. The eye-catching displays that can be created with this product are limited only by the installer’s imagination.

Finally, we have the ST1 sound transceiver, an audio-only device that can serve as an input or an output. Integrators can add a stereo audio source to any Just Add Power system or extract stereo audio from an existing transmitter. With this one device, integrators can manipulate the audio signal in a multitude of ways to suit customer’s desires.

As professional AV’s largest interoperable ecosystem, the HDBaseT Alliance has long been committed to fostering an environment of greater flexibility and inclusiveness among our industry’s community. This has never been clearer than in recent years, as global supply-chain challenges have effectively brought into focus, especially for integrators and installers, the importance of access to brand-agnostic solutions that work together seamlessly. With an ecosystem of over 200 members, and thousands of products in the market supporting the HDBaseT standard, I am proud to say that each day HDBaseT is helping them skirt some of these obstacles, and all without sacrificing a single pixel on quality or reliability.

At the heart of our efforts to spearhead the ongoing advancement of this truly interoperable ecosystem is our Spec 3.0 of the HDBaseT standard. This latest generation supports the extension of fully uncompressed 4K@60Hz 4:4:4, audio, USB 2.0, 1Gb Ethernet, controls, and up to 100 watts of power—all over a single, standard, Category 6a cable—up to 100m/328ft. In just over 6 months since the first wave of HDBaseT 3.0 products made their debut on our booth’s signature Power Wall at InfoComm 2021, the number that will be displayed there at this year’s show has grown by over 200 percent—a true testament to the technology’s game-changing potential. Clearly, we are only scratching the surface of the market’s demand for the high-bandwidth, uncompressed, multimedia signal distribution with zero latency that only HDBaseT 3.0 can provide.

Heading into the second half of 2022, we are excited to continue providing our members with more opportunities for innovation, expanding the number of interoperable products for integrators and installers to choose from, and widening the array of real-world applications for professional AV, with greater capabilities than ever before.

VuWall is dedicated to helping customers in control rooms and corporate workspaces increase productivity and enhance visualization experiences with innovative video wall technology. VuWall’s goal remains the same: To continue developing powerful, interoperable tools that facilitate the installation and operation of all IP devices and applications from one easy-to-use, centralized platform. 

VuWall’s latest TRx 3.2 release brings enhanced performance, usability and interoperability. This version also features a new plug-in to the Genetec Security Center for a seamlessly integrated solution that allows operators to visualize IP cameras on video walls with other content sources from a single easy-to-use platform. Looking forward, VuWall continues to focus on facilitating interoperability in the AV industry, already supporting SDVoE, IHSE, Matrox and NDI-compatible devices. Organizations expect to be able to grow their pool of IP equipment as their needs evolve while controlling their AV infrastructure from a single software platform. TRx is the only software platform that brings such flexibility to control a multi-brand environment with seamless compatibility.

The demand for multi-source, multi-video wall deployments is at an all-time high and continues to accelerate. The progress of the AV-over-IP transition; the convergence of AV and IT; the affordability of networks, displays; and the market demand for more flexibility and interoperability have created a unique need for a distributed video wall solution. VuWall addresses and solves these challenges and limitations with the introduction of the PAK video wall node, which is used to deploy and manage modular video walls in AV-over-IP environments. PAK eliminates complicated wiring, a single point of failure, and past challenges by creating the most efficient networked video wall solution. In line with VuWall’s vision to simplify video wall integration and operation, PAK brings the added value that VuWall customers demand: versatility, scalability and security.

At Epson, we are committed to building large, spectacular, and immersive displays that can efficiently and cost effectively deliver transformative experiences across a wide range of markets, including live events, experiential, art, signage, corporate, house of worship, and education.

After two years of being away, Epson is eager to be back at InfoComm to demonstrate our latest projection technology in person. Epson’s booth will showcase its premium projection solutions that integrate seamlessly into virtually any environment and transform spaces into unique experiences unbound by a frame. 

Epson engineers listen to customers and continue to innovate with smaller, lighter, and brighter solutions. Epson will showcase the world’s smallest and lightest 20,000-lumen and 10,000-lumen projectors; along with its ultra-wide, extra-big display solutions; flexible signage technology; and its impressive projector management and installation tools. 

Shown for the first time in the U.S., Epson will highlight its new 13,000-, 16,000-, and 20,000-lumen projectors, including the EB-PU2220B and EB-PU2120W, which are 60 percent smaller and 50 percent lighter than predecessors. Epson will also show the new PixAlign ELPEC01 camera that attaches to select Epson projectors and lenses. PixAlign is a powerful tool that makes advanced projection installations, such as edge blending and stacking, easier than ever before. 

Addressing today’s education and corporate display needs, Epson will also demonstrate hybrid collaboration and learning solutions that enable all participants to see, be seen, and participate equally, whether they are in person or remote. Epson’s booth will also include digital signage solutions that enable creative minds to deliver immersive, experiential moments to be remembered.

FSR was established in 1981, the same year IBM launched the PC, and we’ve never wavered in our mission to provide quality and cost-effective products to an industry in constant motion. The company now manufactures hundreds of infrastructure, signal management, and control solutions, including floor, wall, table, and ceiling connectivity boxes, as well as a full line of interfaces, distribution amplifiers, matrix switchers, seamless switchers, and HDBaseT and CAT-X signal delivery products.

This year our engineering team has been exceptionally busy designing products that address current requirements, but—as always—will feature forward-thinking functionalities to keep our customers ahead of the technology curve. And while we didn’t predict the severe supply chain shortages, we were ready! All our products are made in the U.S., our shelves are stocked, and there is ample inventory available.

Our product roadmap includes a cost-effective and clear path to power, data, and AV transport across a room to where it is needed. We launched our award-winning and extremely popular Smart-Way Raceway a few years ago, and we are constantly adding to the platform. At InfoComm we are introducing Smart-Way Wall Raceway that allows the transition from a floor to ceiling system. We are also extending our Modular Link System (MLS) with the Smart-Way MLS Stick—a quick way to extend the MLS across the floor to another work surface.

On the infrastructure side, we are debuting the industry’s first dedicated flat panel TV project box engineered for 8-inch block walls full of features and options available in a variety of configurations.

And come see our hinged “tool-less” U-Access cover that will simplify and shorten installation timelines. 

Other innovations include a pre-wired ceiling box that minimizes job site visits, a high-end performance 3.1 Gen 2 Digital Ribbon USB cable, an internal charger bracket designed to contain AC power, plus a USB Type-A and Type-C charger, new DA, switcher, and extender.
