Sharp Imaging and Information Company of America (SIICA), a division of Sharp Electronics Corporation (SEC), has announced the launch of the new Sharp XP-X171Q laser projector. This model is the latest product in Sharp's X Series, following the launch of the XP-X141Q in September. It features 4K Ultra High-Definition resolution with high brightness, designed for areas like corporate conference rooms, higher education classrooms, museums, and more.

The X171Q laser projector displays 9.2 million visible pixels at 16,500 lumens, bringing presentations and content to life. It features an innovative red assist laser that produces a more vivid red color while the traditional blue laser drives high brightness. The remarkable level of detail and color reproduction from this projector's 4K UHD resolution offers a unique addition to the market, particularly for spaces that need to overcome ambient light.

"Expanding the X Series with the new X171Q provides our customers with higher brightness and the ultimate 4K UHD viewing experience that aligns with standard display resolutions, allowing them to create content only once, saving both time and money," said Richard McPherson, Senior Product Manager, Projectors, Sharp. "We understand the importance for dealers and end users to deliver high-quality content, which is why we developed this innovative model that includes unique RB laser light and new, advanced features."

The X171Q Laser Projector also features ProAssist software for complete control and adjustment of the projected image on the screen from a computer via a network. It allows necessary adjustments to be carried out easily when combining several projectors together to project a larger image with higher resolution and brightness.

Like the X141Q, the X171Q provides reliable and long-term operation for at least 20,000 hours. The X171Q is backed by Sharp's industry-leading limited warranty providing five years or 20,000 hours (whichever comes first). Its features allow for easy installation due to six motorized lenses, 360-degree roll-free capabilities, and motorized lens controls. With its filter-free design, edge blending capabilities, and DLP (Digital Light Processing) technology, it is ideal for demanding integration applications. The X Series is the first line of IP6X projectors from Sharp, offering the highest level of dust protection available for display products. This means customers will need to perform less maintenance than those using projectors with lower or no IP ratings.

Projector manufacturers invite teachers to get closer to the action—or at least the lesson plan—with short-throw projectors. As the product category implies, short-throw projectors are positioned closer to the screen than a traditional or standard-throw projector. That means they’re a better choice in tight quarters, but that’s not the only advantage these projectors provide for educational facilities.

"The traditional reason for a short-throw projector was to support interactive whiteboards," recalled Bob Wudeck, senior director of business development, BenQ North America. "In 2024, the primary reason for short-throw projectors is to enable a larger screen in a smaller space. Emerging markets like simulation, floor projection, and immersive rooms require short-throw projectors to enable larger images without having to mount the projector so far back that it is impractical."

Billy Harrison, product manager, mainstream video projectors, Optoma, agreed that short-throw models are great for space-constrained environments. “The number one reason short-throw projectors have grown in popularity is due to the big image they project from a short distance,” he said.

Another selling point is that short-throw projectors do not require special installation considerations beyond those needed for standard-throw projectors. According to Yann Sablayrolles, product manager projector, Panasonic Connect North America, short-throw units are generally easier to install and maintain.

"They can be mounted on ceilings, desktops, or carts—and can be placed closer to the display surface while still creating the same size image," he explained. "They offer greater installation flexibility with minimal cost increase and no sacrifice in performance or features. They are incredibly good space savers."

Educational Applications

Experts agree that short-throw projectors can be effective in classroom environments. From a practical standpoint, short-throw units can accommodate installations where there isn't enough distance to place a standard-throw projector or there are obstructions in the ceiling where the projector would typically be placed, according to Ryan Pitterle, senior project manager, projectors, Sharp. But there are other benefits as well.

“Generally speaking, when you’re in a smaller classroom where the professor and/or students will be moving around a lot within the classroom, short-throw projectors are the best option because they have specific features to reduce exhaust noise and unwanted distractions when students are seated close to the projector,” Sablayrolles said.

“Short-throw projectors require significantly less throw distance and are less prone to shadowing from participants in the room,” added Harrison. “When using standard-throw projectors, participants and viewers moving close to or in front of the projector can create a shadow, which is undesirable and distracting for others.”

“One key factor is installation volume, which refers to the total space needed to create an image of a certain size," explained Daniel Oey, senior IT product manager, LG Business Solutions. "Flat-panel displays and direct-view LEDs have a thin installation volume, as they are mounted directly to the display surface. However, standard-throw projectors will need a larger installation volume, as they need to be placed at a distance away from the display surface to create a larger image.

"While an older option, projectors are still a highly relevant member of a portfolio of display solutions. For larger images, projectors are often more cost-effective from an image size perspective," Oey continued. "Ultimately, short-throw projectors are a good choice for both classrooms and larger lecture halls, because they offer a good balance of smaller installation volume, image quality, brightness, and cost effectiveness."

Opinions on lecture hall use are more mixed. Mia Shen, senior business line manager, ViewSonic, said short-throw projectors "might not always be the best choice due to the limited throw distances and potential brightness limitations." Pitterle added that large lecture halls often require screens that are larger than the maximum size supported by most fixed lens short-throw projectors. But Wudeck said new 4K short-throw laser projectors are “especially well-suited to lecture halls, enabling 300-inch screens with Rec. 709 color accuracy that can replicate complicated organic colors in fine detail for science and art lecture halls.”

Lens Options

Are there limits with lens choices? That depends on the projector model you choose. “Some short-throw projectors come with fixed lenses, which provide advantages in projector size and cost, while other projectors have the ability to change lenses for more flexibility, but typically results in a bigger and more expensive projector,” Oey said.

"While there’s a cost associated with interchanging lenses," Sablayrolles acknowledged, "this is a good option for those looking to use their projector in a variety of settings and applications."

Generally, Shen said short-throw projectors have fewer lens options compared to traditional projectors. If your short-throw projector has a fixed lens, Shen said there is less flexibility in adjusting the throw distance, which could be a limitation in larger or irregularly shaped rooms. Pitterle advised installers to pay attention to the throw ratio, which is the throw distance divided by screen width.

Projectors usually fall into three categories based on their throw ratio. While estimates vary between manufacturers, Oey said standard-throw projectors generally have a throw ratio greater than 1.0, while the throw ratio for short-throws is around 0.75-1.0 and ultra-short-throws have a throw ratio less than 0.5.

Wudeck differentiated between the three most popular types of short-throw projectors. "Home theater ultra-short-throw projectors are placed close to a wall and have integrated speakers, while immersive projectors for museums and simulation rooms are designed for very large images and blended together," he said. "The traditional classroom models typically have a maximum image size of 130 inches and are designed for whiteboards."

Yes, ultra-short-throw is another subcategory, with projectors that can be placed even closer to the screen, often from only a few inches, while providing a full-sized image. “The difference between short-throw and ultra-short-throw is the lens throw ratio and lens design,” Harrison explained. “Short-throw projectors use a standard front-of-the-projector lens that can be easily identified by the round protruding lens."

"Ultra-short-throw projectors can create large images from very short distances, resulting in a small installation volume and almost eliminating the possibility of shadows," Oey said. "They achieve this by using powerful aspherical lenses. However, as a result they are typically more expensive. Also, because they are placed close to the display surface, the projected image is sensitive to projector mount alignment and display surface flatness, which can cause image distortion."

Considerations and Limitations

Short-throw projectors do not require a special kind of screen, so standard drop-downs or fixed-frame models are just fine. And for a traditional classroom, Wudeck said you can use any screen or whiteboard made in the last 20 years. "For environments with high ambient lighting, a short throw projector can be used with an ALR [ambient light rejection] screen," Harrison advised. "ALR screens reject ambient light back into the environment, allowing for bright and crisp images even in bright rooms."

Any technology has its limits, and there are some disadvantages associated with short-throw projectors, staring with less installation flexibility. As Shen explained, the limited throw distance means these models are generally not suitable for very large rooms or lecture halls where the projector needs to be placed far from the screen.

Harrison also emphasized the need to mount or place the projector close to the projection surface. “For example, a mainstream short-throw projector like the ZH450ST can generate a 100-inch image with a throw distance of 3.6 feet and an even larger 120-inch image from a longer throw distance of 4.3 feet,” he explained. “Short-throw projectors cannot be used from the middle or the rear of the room, as the projector image size will be too large and have poor focus.”

In applications where large screens are needed, a short-throw projector may not suffice. "Traditional fixed lens, short-throw projectors sometimes have limitations to the maximum screen size supported,” Pitterle said. Go bigger than that limited image size and your image can lose focus on the edges, Wudeck added.

There is also the issue of no (or very limited) zoom capabilities. As Harrison observed, most Pro AV short-throw projectors with fixed or interchangeable lenses are limited to 1.15x zoom. “This is the nature of short-throw lens projectors overall and not a limitation of any particular projector company,” he noted.

That lack of zoom means installation can also be challenging, due to the precision needed to square the image on the screen. As Wudeck noted, if your projector doesn't offer lens shift and/or zoom, your projector has to be mounted exactly right to properly fill the screen. "Most mounts will provide sufficient adjustment," Pitterle added, "but professional installation is still recommended."

Sablayrolles said a short-throw projector body can often be bigger and heavier than a traditional projector because of the size of the lens, and he also warned about potential sensitivity to screen imperfections. “It’s really important that you have a perfect screen or wall to project on,” he noted. “Since the projector is placed close to the screen, it is much easier to see imperfections/issues with a screen while using a short-throw projector.”

And, of course, there's cost. If you want that extra flexibility, expect to pay for the convenience. "Short-throw projectors are often more expensive than traditional projectors with similar specifications," Shen confirmed.

Check Your Distance

Ready to install your short-throw projector? According to Sharp's Ryan Pitterle, you can mount it to the ceiling using a standard ceiling mount or with a wall mount attached just above the screen. For a less permanent solution, you can place it close to the screen on a pedestal or table. Some manufacturers even offer custom mobile projector carts, such as the Epson ELPCS01, which is designed exclusively for its PowerLite 810E/815E 3LCD short-throw projectors.

If you need help to determine the best configuration of the room and projector placement, there are several online tools that can help. For example, Panasonic Connect offers a Throw Distance Calculator and Optoma has its own Projection Calculator. Both sites let you calculate projected image size, projection distance, and more based on specific models and lenses.

Christie laser projectors illuminate the rich history, culture, and ecology of Damyang, an ancient city located in the southwestern tip of the Korean Peninsula, with awe-inspiring projections at a new media art exhibition.

Design Silver Fish has placed its trust in Christie laser projectors on several occasions, including the Delight Seoul, Curious 12 Tales and Delight Seongnam multimedia exhibitions, as well as “The Mysterious Village” immersive digital exhibition held at the National Folk Museum of Korea late last year. “While we are very familiar with the dependable D20WU-HS, this is the first time that we have deployed the new DWU880-GS for our media art exhibition. SCN: How long have you been with this company, and what are your responsibilities?

Brian Igoe: I’ve been with ViewSonic for 27 years. I currently head up North American sales. 

SCN: How is ViewSonic celebrating its 35th anniversary?

BI: ViewSonic will celebrate its anniversary in the same way that we have grown our business, and that’s by celebrating with our partners. ViewSonic was born of the channel, and we remain dedicated to our partners.

They’ll see a series of promotions, special pricing, SPIFs and activities to celebrate this milestone. Our end customers will also see special offers throughout the year.

No anniversary would be complete without a party, and we’ve had a few this year and plan to host an event at CES 2023 in January to keep the celebration going. It’s a big milestone. 

SCN: The Pro AV industry is always changing, but what are some of the really big shifts you’ve seen in the past decade?

BI: The Pro AV market is expected to grow to, I think I’ve seen, $230 billion by 2023, and I believe this is due to enhancements in display technologies, IoT for smart buildings, IT and the cloud, and artificial intelligence.

A shift is an increase in demand for larger-sized displays. The CE and Pro AV markets have always pushed for bigger screen sizes, and we’re definitely seeing growth in the 86-98-inch touch-display category, especially in enterprise conference rooms.

Also, conferencing and collaboration solutions are highly requested. We’re finding customers looking for all-in-one type solutions, for hardware and software. As a company, ViewSonic has been making this shift into becoming a solutions provider, so I think it positions us nicely to grow with our partners and their needs in this market. 

SCN: What are the short and long-term goals for your company?

BI: Short term? To deliver innovative solutions to optimize productivity and collaboration in business and educational environments. Long term? As needs change in the market, ViewSonic will change our product lines to match what our partners need to grow their businesses. Solutions like larger displays, easier connectivity options, and better management tools and software to keep students connected and workers productive are what we’re going to strive to bring to market. 

SCN: With so many product lines, how has ViewSonic navigated through recent supply chain issues?

BI: Well, the supply chain has presented some challenges over the last year for just about everyone, but I think ViewSonic has managed it well. The key was and is to set expectations and clearly communicate with our customers and partners about products and SKUs that have been delayed. 

SCN: The use of laser light sources appears to the future of projectors, so why are lamp-based projectors still popular?

BI: Laser projectors have really become accessible for a larger audience. They deliver saturated colors, high brightness, and a much larger lifespan than lamp-based projectors. In the long run, laser may be more cost-effective than lamps—but for now, there is still a premium with these projectors. And that’s it in a nutshell: price.

If you don’t need to display detailed visuals or video—say you are using a projector for meetings where you are showing charts, spreadsheets, and the like—then a lamp-based projector will be just fine. Same with brightness. In most office settings, you won’t need the extra lumens and there’s no need to pay for them.

When looking to buy a projector, take the color and brightness into consideration. But when looking at the cost, look at the overall cost, not just the immediate checkout price. You have to consider that lamp projectors are cost-effective up front, but when you factor in the cost of replacement bulbs and the overall life of the projector, laser may be a better investment. Of course, ViewSonic has a line of lamp and laser projectors to fit all needs. 

SCN: ViewSonic has two lines of gaming monitors. How important has esports become to Pro AV, and is it an area of growth for your company?

BI: Esports is exploding. It was already a fast-growing market, but the pandemic really seems to have accelerated it. There has been a significant increase since 2016, and in 2020 there were 272 million occasional viewers and 223 million esports enthusiasts for a combined audience of close to 475 million.

For reference, the 2019 League of Legends World Championship drew more than 100 million viewers worldwide. The 2019 Super Bowl drew in 112.3 million viewers.

This is a new and booming market for the Pro AV channel and our partners. High schools and colleges are starting esports teams, designing labs and esports auditoriums, as well as professional esports stadiums.

ViewSonic has two gaming monitor lines. The ELITE series is our flagship gaming monitor line that offers the absolute best features, performance, and technology for esports professionals and gaming enthusiasts. When it comes to esports in education, it’s more than just the monitors for gaming. Most labs will include high-end monitors for streaming, editing, and content creation. Then there’s teaching—and just like a football coach, an esports coach will need products to review and critique gameplay. And that’s where the full line of ViewSonic commercial displays and interactive displays can come in. 

SCN: How has the growth in hybrid learning workflows impacted your classroom solutions?

BI: At ViewSonic, we developed software called myViewBoard to allow students and teachers to interact and collaborate in the classroom or remotely.

Our software really helped schools as they were struggling with remote learning. The biggest hurdle was ensuring that teachers were fully comfortable with our software, and that’s why we provided free professional development training during the pandemic.

Now that students are back in school, we continue to deliver education solutions that allow collaboration and sharing of content and ideas either in the classroom or across the globe. We currently have more than 6 million myViewBoard users, and we’ll continue to enhance and develop products that foster education. 

SCN: What digital signage applications (wayfinding, in-store display, etc.) do you think will grow the most in the next few years?

BI: There will be growth in many industries, but we’re looking at markets such as retail and hospitality. Public safety will also be an important area of growth for digital signage. There’s also going to be a shift from standard video walls to dvLED displays in these markets. 

SCN: Where do you see the Pro AV industry heading?

BI: There have been changes from static products to more interactive and cost-effective products, and I think that’s where the Pro AV market will continue to go.

ViewSonic has been transitioning from just a hardware manufacturer to a solutions provider. We have products like myViewBoard Manager, which works with the myViewBoard software but on the IT side. It allows integrator partners to offer control systems to the solutions being installed.

In categories such as dvLEDs, as the prices come down, we’ll see a super-fast shift from traditional video walls to these larger dvLED walls. Also, these dvLED products have better ROI, are easier to install, require less maintenance, and deliver better overall performance. This is a win-win product for both installer and customer. 

Canada’s largest cycle studio opened in the new Altea Active club in Toronto’s Liberty Village with a unique experience for cyclists thanks to sparkAV and a Christie GS Series 1DLP laser projector. The club officially opened its doors on March 4, 2022, and the 89,000-square-foot center features over 185 weekly studio fitness classes and unique amenities which include the relaxing Somadome Meditation Pods, a full-service in-club restaurant, and entertainment features, including Duckpin Bowling and Topgolf Swing Suites. 

Altea Active retained sparkAV—an experienced audiovisual design and integration firm based in Toronto and Montreal—to select and install AV technology into the club’s various amenities, including the cycle studio. “sparkAV was to design and implement immersive and state of the art technology solutions that tied in all aspects of AV, network and CCTV, with tie-ins to modern fitness technologies and customer engagement,” said Derek Shama, sparkAV’s president and co-founder. The goal was to bring Altea Active’s stated vision “of an elevated fitness experience in an environment suitable for both physical and social wellness” to life.

The intention for the cycle studio was to create an experience that would transport members to roads all over the world. With 75 bikes, surround sound, music-synched lights and a 285-inch screen with a Christie laser projector, the cycle studio is a club highlight.

sparkAV explored several projectors for the cycle studio. “Ultimately, a Christie projector was chosen due to its specifications, industry excellence, Canadian support and presence, and premium image quality,” stated Shama. “[Altea Active] was very pleased that [it] could achieve all this with Christie and remain cost competitive.”

The Christie DWU1075-GS projector delivers bright, vibrant, and high-resolution visuals. Beyond high-image quality, the GS Series range of 1DLP projectors is ideal for high-usage environments due to the reliable, low-maintenance, long-life operation associated with laser technology. Despite the pandemic and unprecedented supply chain issues, sparkAV was able to successfully deliver the project on time and within budget and is currently collaborating on other Altea Active locations in Canada. “To say that the client is thrilled is an understatement,” exclaimed Shama. “As key stakeholders, investors, municipal officials and, of course, customers started coming through the doors, the results were the same—sheer awe with the space, its experience and the outstanding video quality.”

Delivering the unexpected can be a winning marketing strategy when executed well. But the art of surprising consumers extends beyond traditional creative methods like standard digital signage and video. Sometimes the winning twist can be a clever way of reaching them.

Across the retail landscape, the largest block of untapped marketing real estate is right under their feet. Wovenmedia, a San Francisco-based digital signage firm, working in conjunction with projection specialist Sharp/NEC, is now rolling out dynamic marketing and messaging in retail environments using laser floor projection systems.

“Part of the strategy behind floor graphics is trying to utilize sales space that typically or historically isn’t utilized to engage shoppers in a new way from an advertising standpoint,” said Drew Walls, a strategic account manager at Wovenmedia specializing in big-box retail. Major retailers are now taking advantage of floor real estate for advertising just as consumers return to their aisles in big numbers.

In-Store Experience Impact

"When we went through the pandemic, the first thing to really suffer from a retail standpoint was the in-store experience," Walls explained. "It completely changed how people shopped. As we look forward to getting people back in a retail setting, and continuing their customer journeys within a retail environment, I think there’s a desire to reassess how they’re being engaged and how that in-store experience can be enriched."

A clear advantage of floor projection over other in-store marketing methods is that it disrupts the retail shopping experience and redirects shoppers’ attention. “If you’re pushing your cart, you can’t really help but stop and pay attention,” Walls said. “I think it’s also a case study in how we can effectively disrupt that journey. You’re trying to get them used to seeing information and receiving ads in a new way.”

Today, consumers are conditioned to look for display monitors to find useful information in public settings, such as a schedule of arrivals and departures at an airport or an electronic menu board at a deli. Those constraints are not an issue with floor projection.

“Typically, what you’re going to see, as far as an electronic display, is a large-format, flat-screen monitor that’s in your typical 16:9 aspect ratio—the all-familiar rectangle that you see,” said John Moezzi, national accounts manager at Sharp/NEC. “With this technology, we can do all sorts of things. We don’t have to project a rectangle down on the floor.”

Through projection mapping techniques, static images or dynamic video projected onto the floor appear in their own shapes and sizes by essentially removing the negative space from the visual assets. In a retail environment, the result could be a special sales message from a brand for that particular location or a general brand commercial.

“With creative uses of the content, you can do all sorts of things that look completely out of the ordinary,” Moezzi said. “Let’s say you use a black background—when you shoot black down onto the floor, it doesn’t show anything. So, if you imagine having a video with bubbles going across the screen, all you would see on the floor is bubbles. You can get very creative with the content in doing this projection mapping, which is totally different than what you could do using a large-format display, your typical flat panel.”

Laser Power

Moezzi credits the advent of widespread laser projection with enabling floor projection in retail. Although the concept of floor projection had been proven with bulb projectors, he said scaling to multiple locations—300 stores to date in the case of one big-box retailer—required the ease of maintenance afforded by laser projectors.

“The laser light source never has to be changed, unlike a lamp that you have to change after so many hours,” Moezzi explained. “Also very important is the optical block is sealed. With lamp-based technology, you would have a filter that has to be cleaned after so many hours to prevent dust from causing problems with the display of the images. Given the fact that there’s no lamp to replace or filter to clean, these laser projectors are essentially maintenance free.”

[So, You Want to Do Projection Mapping!]

That level of hands-off operation is crucial for executing a successful floor projection installation, Moezzi said. With the projectors mounted to ceiling rafters high above the sales floor, a motorized lift is needed to access them for maintenance (or replacement in the case of laser projectors). Interrupting the shopping journey to perform regular maintenance on overhead projectors isn’t high on retailers’ wish lists.

“We had to think through every possible scenario we could to try to mitigate any risk,” Moezzi offered. “You want to do everything you can to remotely remediate any issues that there might be, as well as proactively do the things that are required so that you don’t have issues pop up in the first place.”

Read the Room

Environmental challenges can determine where to place floor projection by narrowing the field of potential locations. Installed overhead lighting, as well as ambient sources such as skylights, can be gating issues for the designers and installers behind floor projection installations.

“From a technical aspect, the physical location is pretty important when you’re trying to execute these projectors, simply because you’re going to run into considerations like lighting in different retail settings,” Walls said. “Every store is going to have different lighting conditions. There’s just going to be tweaking that you’re gonna have to do, such as brightness [and] coming up with the best mix for maximum visibility within a setting that might have ambient light already.”

Floor projection assets can be uploaded, scheduled, and implemented on site in the retail store or at a corporate headquarters—in this case using the WovenManager CMS with Projector Control Application in conjunction with NEC NP-P605UL laser projectors.

“Where are we going to place these, as it relates to high-traffic items that are the most profitable [and whose] ads speak the most relevantly to?” Walls asked. “I think, looking forward, location is really going to be a driving factor in adding more projectors or especially how these will serve more of a wayfinding and a human purpose. And that just completely depends on the strategy from a retail standpoint.”

Wayfinding could be a natural application of floor projection once marketers establish them as a source of information. For now, however, retailers are mostly using the technology to boost sell-through of products in their stores.

“Retailers have had an interest in this sort of application for a long time, but the technology was just not there,” Moezzi said. “This is an example of the technology meeting a need that retailers already had, so they’re very receptive to the idea of trying an application like this.”

The What Else: Joining Epson’s existing line of Pro Series interchangeable-lens projectors, the new solutions pair with Epson’s lens family. The new models range from 6,000 to 10,000 lumens and offer advanced installation features, 3-chip 3LCD for high color brightness, and WUXGA resolution with 4K Enhancement Technology.

[Epson Ships Eight New PowerLite Laser Models]

For simplified installation, the new models offer advanced features, including built-in edge blending, image warping, as well as direct content playback with shape overlay tools from USB storage media. The EB-PU1000 Series and EB-PU2010 are compatible with Epson’s wide range of optional powered lenses, including a zero offset, 0.35 ultra-short-throw lens. Epson’s new clip-on optional external camera requires no angle of view adjustment and gives integrators access to automated tools including auto color calibration, screen matching of multiple projectors, tiling assist for edge blends, and the stacking assist function. Geometry correction for stacking can be performed without an external router or PC.

Epson’s latest laser projectors are equipped with built-in Near Field Communication (NFC) function to reduce setup time when commissioning a large number of projectors. With NFC technology, users can read and write setting information using Epson’s mobile app, Epson Projector Config Tool. Users can also control and monitor projectors via the Epson Projector Management application for Windows or set up multiple projectors in a single large space via the Epson Projector Professional Tool (EPPT) application for macOS and Windows.

The What Else: The Pro L30000UNL features a solid-state laser light engine and an electrostatic air filter for up to 20,000 hours of virtually maintenance-free operation, and is compatible with the same eight optional interchangeable lenses as Epson’s Pro L25000U. The projector also includes a host of features to withstand the rigors of staging and live events, such as a mechanical shutter and sealed optical engine. The projector comes equipped with a built-in camera, enabling tools such as Stacking Assist, Tiling Assist, and auto-color calibration for multi-screen images of networked projectors. These tools are accessible through the free Epson Projector Professional Tool (EPPT) software.

Casio XJ-UT352WN

Casio’s Ultra Short Throw XJ-UT352WN LampFree projector is an all-in-one solution for the education market, providing high-quality projection technology with enhanced features and functionality. It features 3,500 lumens and a WXGA native resolution of 1280x800, enabling the projection of large, bright images. The XJ-UT352WN uses Casio’s Laser and LED Hybrid light source to project vibrant colors with no lamps or filters to replace and long-lasting performance of up to 20,000 hours. The XJ-UT352WN has an improved dust resistant design and is network ready with LAN Connectivity (RJ-45) and optional wireless capability.

Additionally, the XJ-UT352WN includes Casio’s Educational Solutions suite that facilitates easier use of projection in classrooms. Christie DHD630-GS

Epson’s BrightLink 735Fi 1080p 3LCD interactive laser display is designed to turn almost any flat surface into a widescreen digital whiteboard. LG HU85LS

The LG Ultra-Short-Throw Projector (HU85LS) is a 4K laser projector that can produce a 90-inch image when placed just two inches from the projection wall, and a 120-inch image when just 7.2 inches away. This ability to create a large projection display in nearly any room arrangement makes it especially well suited for classrooms.

The HU85LS adopts three-channel laser technology to create RGB color via different light sources. Because of this, the HU85LS has no color wheel, so it significantly reduces “rainbow” effects that can be experienced by conventional projectors. Maxell Pro AV’s MP-TW4011 3LCD laser interactive projector is engineered to transform the interactive experience for K-12 classrooms with a bright display and interactive software. Featuring 4,200 ANSI lumens brightness, the MP-TW4011 combines Maxell’s Accentualizer and High Dynamic Contrast Range 2 (HDCR2) technology to enhance image sharpness, gloss, and shade while correcting color and tone distortion. With 3LCD laser technology, the projector has 20,000 hours of maintenance-free operation and can operate up to 50,000 hours with Long Life 2 Mode in use.

StarBoard Interactive Presentation Software optimizes writing and drawing capabilities with freeform shape and handwriting automation. The interactive pen tool allows users to draw and write directly on the projected screen without a PC and can operate as a compass, ruler, protractor, or stopwatch. 

The MP-TW4011 incorporates the optional finger-touch unit that enables the projector to detect finger touch activity on the screen area. Windows Multi Touch allows users with touch-enabled Windows 8.1/10 systems to operate the PC directly from the interactive screen with up to six pens or touches.

NEC UM383WL

NEC's UM383WL ultra-short-throw HLD LED projector is a low-maintenance display solution for education and corporate customers that need up to 130-inch diagonal video and images at an affordable cost. Its ultra-short-throw lens (0.27:1 throw ratio) helps eliminate shadows on the screen along with projected light in the presenter’s eyes created by traditional front-projection systems, and the HLD LED light source eliminates the maintenance requirements that exist in lamp-based projectors. 

Its features include horizontal and vertical keystone adjustment or cornerstone correction, ECO Mode technology for lower power consumption, and input/output panel, including dual HDMI, VGA, and RJ-45 for networking. It also offers NaViSet Administrator 2, a free software tool designed to ease administration and management for large installations. Administrators and users will also benefit from the ability to remotely monitor and control the projector over a network, which will save IT employees time and help reduce the costs related to projector operation.

Optoma ZH406ST

The Optoma ZH406ST is a 4,200-lumen 1080p DuraCore laser short-throw projector that delivers high performance in a lightweight, compact size. Featuring a 300,000:1 contrast ratio, 4K UHD input, HDR10 and HLG compatibility, and a 0.5:1 throw ratio, the ZH406ST produces 100-inch images from only several feet away, making it well suited for small classrooms, conference rooms, and other space-constrained environments. 

Equipped with vertical lens shift, four-corner correction, and 360-degree and portrait mode operation, the Optoma ZH406ST enables flexible installations. Additionally, a laser light source eliminates the need for lamp and filter replacements, providing up to 30,000 hours of low-cost and virtually maintenance-free performance in Eco mode. The Optoma ZH406ST also offers HDMI 2.0, HDMI, and VGA inputs for connectivity to high-quality 4K HDR digital video or legacy analog video sources, while LAN and RS-232 enable control via Crestron, Extron, AMX, or Telnet. 

Panasonic PT-TW371R

Panasonic’s PT-TW371R Series of short-throw WXGA (1280x800) resolution LCD projectors are designed for easy setup, whether on a table top or mounted from a ceiling. The wireless series connects to laptops, mobile devices, and other sources for supporting presentation needs. 

The PT-TW371RU has interactive capabilities and includes two interactive pens and Whiteboard Software for PC to support writing and drawing on projected images, as well as the ability to save work to a PC for later distribution. The PT-TW371R Series can project an 80-inch image from an approximate distance of 2.5 feet without creating any screen shadowing, which is well suited for rooms where space is limited. Its 3,300 lumens of brightness with 16,000:1 contrast ratio and operating noise of 30dB make it particularly adept for classroom and meeting room visualization. New technology extends lamp replacement to approximately 20,000 hours by reducing degradation and improving cooling capabilities for low TCO and less maintenance downtime.

ViewSonic PS750W

The ViewSonic PS750W is envisioned as a complete interactive projection solution for the classroom. With native WXGA resolution and an ultra-short-throw lens, the PS750W includes an embedded camera, laser curtain module, and wall-mount kit. It features a brightness of 3,300 lumens, while its 0.23 throw ratio allows it to be placed just inches away from a wall or screen. It is flexible enough to be ceiling-mounted or placed on a tabletop. 

The PS750W comes the company’s cBoard software, enabling users to write, highlight, edit, and transform documents and images on-screen in real time, making it a big-picture alternative to interactive whiteboards and displays. Connectivity options include HDMI, HDMI/MHL, USB 2.0, VGA Out, S-Video, Composite, RJ45, and RS-232, ensuring all types of external devices can be connected. 

The What: Sony Electronics has announced the 10,000-lumen VPL-GTZ380, the highest brightness model in its lineup of native 4K (4096×2160) SXRD models. 

The What Else: Featuring a newly developed 0.74-inch Native 4K SXRD panel, the VPL-GTZ380 provides detailed imagery with a high 16,000:1 contrast ratio for deep blacks. By adopting a new liquid crystal material for the panel, its light stability dramatically improves, enabling durability with 10,000 lumens brightness. This allows the projector to be used in both bright and dark environments for increased versatility and flexibility in installation. The VPL-GTZ380’s new laser light source, which incorporates a red laser diode in addition to the two different wavelength blue laser diodes, enables a wide color gamut of 100 percent DCI-P3 without any loss of brightness.

The new 4K SXRD model is equipped with a high-performance picture processor optimized for projection, “X1 Ultimate for projector,” which is based on the original X1 Ultimate processor used for Sony’s line of BRAVIA TVs to enable enhanced picture quality. This includes new features such as Dynamic HDR Enhancer and Object-based HDR Remaster to improve dynamic range and achieve deeper blacks. The VPL-GTZ380 also supports HDR formats including HDR 10 and HLG for more natural color reproduction. 

At 112 pounds, the VPL-GTZ380 features a compact body size for its class due to the adoption of the small panel and patented phosphor wheel for efficient heat release, allowing the model to more easily integrate into a variety of installation environments. Additionally, the projector achieves 39dB for quiet operation due to the use of liquid SXRD panel cooling system and streamlined air flow design. Its form factor, quiet operation, and easily stackable four-corner mount design enables multi-projection in domes and for large screen exhibitions. Due to its high contrast and deep black levels, the projector minimizes banding, allowing for uniform blending.

Through an optional license, the VPL-GTZ380 can also support 4K 120Hz and low transport delay, which are essential for displaying CG images for training simulators and large-screen displays of esports events. The model has additional optional 3D and Night Vision Goggle (NVG) functions for use in VR research facilities and for specialized training.

The LG ProBeam is a compact 5,000-lumen projector and is ideal for corporate, hospital and education en-vironments, while the ultra-short-throw LG CineBeam can project a 120-inch image when posi-tioned just 7.2 inches from the wall, making it ideal for retail, hospitality, small boardrooms and classroom environments.

The What Else: The LG ProBeam (BU50NST) is a 4K UHD 5,000-lumen projector, bright enough to be used even in a brightly lit room. The picture quality benefits both educational attentiveness and realism needed for virtual games, while offering highly detailed images necessary in corporate and healthcare environments.

With the 1.6x zoom feature, the LG ProBeam projector can immediately project a 60 percent larger image without moving or re-adjusting, turning a 100-inch projection into a 160-inch projection in seconds. Thanks to detailed keystone adjustment and its high brightness capability, it can project a minimum screen size of 40 inches and a maximum size of 300 inches (25 feet). Unlike conventional projectors that make three colors with one light source, the HU85LS adopts three-channel laser technology to create RGB color via different light sources. Both the LG ProBeam and LG CineBeam offer wireless screen mirroring, webOS 4.5 for native web browsing, two integrated five-watt speakers, and a Bluetooth-out port to boost wireless audio through a separate stereo system. The 12-point keystone adjustment available on both models enables the projection of a 16:9 picture, regardless of placement angle or uneven surfaces.

The What: BenQ has launched the BlueCore WUXGA and 1080p 4,000- and 5,000-lumen laser projectors. The LU710, LU930, LH710, and LH930 eliminate lamps and feature a filter-free laser engine sealed and rated to prevent dust accumulation. Without lamps and filters, as well as protected from particles that shorten projector life, the new models significantly lower the total cost of ownership for schools.

Ty Schwab, acting manager of classroom technologies at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, had his eye on laser projectors for the university ever since the newer models started coming to market. For Schwab and his team, this is manageable—until he gets a request for a projector in a conference room or another administrative-centered area. The MP-JU4001 also features High Dynamic Contrast Ratio for more vibrant colors and Maxell’s unique Accentualizer technology.

The 3LCD J Series projectors from Maxell provide a reduction in total cost of ownership with no lamps to replace and 20,000 hours light source life with normal mode. Additionally, the new phosphor chip technology, which replaced the phosphor wheel and motor, results in fewer moving parts for better reliability and quieter operation.

The entire J Series is designed for easy installation and setup to help save time and money. Maxell’s Perfect Fit 2 feature enables users to adjust individual corners and sides independent of one another to ensure the picture fits the screen in each classroom while the Cloning Function allows users to copy configuration settings from one projector to another of the same model. The What: Epson has announced availability for its Pro L10-Series interchangeable-lens laser projectors that offer a compact solution with robust features. 

The What Else: The new series offers up to 7,000 lumens of equal color and white brightness, along with 3LCD technology and native WUXGA resolution with 4K Enhancement Technology. The projectors are compatible with Epson’s current Pro L-Series lens family, including the 0.35 throw ratio ultra-short-throw lens with zero offset, and come equipped with built-in edge blending, image warping, and shape overlay features. 

The Pro L10-Series offers simplified installation tools, including HDBaseT and wide lens shift, making them well suited for large-venue usage—from visitor attractions to higher education, museums to corporate meeting rooms. They produce detailed, high contrast images and a BT.709 color space for more realistic images.

The Epson Pro L1060U, Pro L1070U and Pro L1075U projectors are available now through authorized resellers. White cabinet WXGA models—the Pro L1060W and Pro L1070W—will be available in March 2020. All projectors are, or will be, available without the standard lens (NL models). 

The What: Epson has announced availability for its new BrightLink interactive laser displays. The BrightLink 1485Fi is now shipping and the BrightLink 1480Fi will ship in March 2020.

The What Else: The flexible BrightLink 1485Fi projects both 100-inch images in 16:9 aspect ratio and super-wide 120-inch 16:6 images, offering up to 95 percent more interactive space compared to a 75-inch flat panel. The 1485Fi and 1480Fi also support split-screen display, allowing users to show content from up to as many as four devices simultaneously, including PCs, document cameras, the electronic whiteboard or network-connected devices. In addition, the 1485Fi allows for operation with touch and pen-enabled interactivity, allowing up to eight users to collaborate at once. Designed for easy collaboration, both new BrightLink models support PC-free whiteboarding, printing, emailing, and more. 

Additional features include improved cable management, with the BrightLink 1485Fi offering an HDBaseT control pad that supports video, audio, and interactive functions, reducing the number of cables; built-in wireless, with free Epson iProjection software enabling users to connect, display, and share content simultaneously to/from up to 50 connected devices, and support for Miracast. The projectors also come with a one-year subscription of SMART Learning Suite, with support for SMART Notebook, SMART amp, SMART lab, SMART Learning Suite Online, and more.

The What: Optoma has begun shipping two new projectors designed to deliver high brightness and dependable operation to classrooms and other professional settings.

The What Else: Featuring a respective 4,500 and 4,000 lumens of brightness and a 300,000:1 contrast ratio, along with HDR10 and HLG compatibility, the Optoma ZW403 and ZH403 produce bright and sharp images with color precision and strong contrast. With a long-lasting, DuraCore laser light source, these projectors enable up to 30,000 hours of virtually maintenance-free operation in Eco mode. 

The ZW403 and ZH403 are also equipped with several built-in features, including keystone and four-corner correction, 1.3x optical zoom, and 24/7 and 360-degree and portrait mode operation for flexible installation. Both projectors feature a small and lightweight footprint, making them easier to install and more transportable from one classroom to the next.

The ZW403 features WXGA (1280x800) resolution while the ZH403 can display 1080p (1920x1080) images. Both models accept 4K UHD signals via HDMI 2.0 inputs, as well as VGA, LAN, and RS-232 connectivity for control via Crestron, Extron, AMX, or Telnet.

The What Else: Featuring the company’s DuraCore Laser light source, theProScene ZK50 features a 300,000:1 contrast ratio and supports HDR10 and HLG color compatibility, while providing up to 30,000 hours of operation in Eco mode. To ease installation, it features vertical lens shift, 1.6x optical zoom, and a 12V trigger, along with a compact size, light weight, and quiet operation. RS-232C and LAN connectivity also enable integration and control with industry standards.

The What Else: The Optoma ZH506T, ZU506T, and ZW506-W projectors feature a 300,000:1 contrast ratio and display more than 1 billion colors to produce lifelike images with rich detail—all with more than 5,000 lumens of brightness to enhance any small to large-sized venue. They offer up to 20,000 hours of operation and vertical lens shift, four corner correction, and 360-degree and portrait mode performance. HDMI and VGA inputs provide connectivity to high-quality 4K HDR digital video while LAN and RS-232 enable control via Crestron, Extron, AMX, or Telnet.

The Optoma ZU506T is a WUXGA (1920x1200) resolution projector, also with a brightness of 5,000 ANSI lumens, available in black and white at an estimated street price of $3,299. The Optoma ZW506-W is a WXGA (1280x800) resolution projector with 5,200 ANSI lumens, available at an estimated street price of $2,499. All three Optoma ProScene projectors are available for purchase through authorized dealers.

In addition, Optoma has launched its ZU610T WUXGA (1920x1200) 6,000-lumen laser projector for professional environments. The successor to the Optoma ZU510T, the Optoma ZU610T is designed for flexibility and reliability with its fixed lens design, a 1.2-2.13:1 throw ratio, and 1.8x digital zoom to cover a wide range of projection distances, all while eliminating costs. The ZU610T also offers robust input options, including HDMI, VGA, and S-Video for connectivity to a wide range of digital and legacy devices. Combined with a virtually maintenance-free laser phosphor light source and IP5X-certified optical engine, it is well suited for office boardrooms, lecture halls, entertainment venues, and other mid-sized environments.

Available in both black and white chassis, the Optoma ZU610T is available for purchase now for an estimated street price of $3,499 through authorized dealers.

The Bottom Line: The new ProScene lineup is engineered for high brightness and accurate color reproduction, along with installation flexibility and lifetime reliability for a variety of professional environments, including houses of worship, museums, entertainment, and education settings.

The What: NEC Display Solutions of America has launched two new projector models: the P525WL and P525UL. The P525WL replaces NEC’s P502WL-2, and the P525UL replaces NEC’s P502HL-2. For each new model, the imaging unit has been changed from DLP to LCD technology.

The What Else: Featuring 5,200 center lumens, these two LCD models provide clear images in high-ambient light conditions, and the laser light source offers a minimum of 20,000 hours of reliable life, which lowers total cost of ownership and reduces maintenance. By utilizing Constant Brightness mode, the P525WL and P525UL are capable of delivering consistent-looking images for the life of the projector. Additionally, these 4K-ready projectors support UHD signals, while WXGA and WUXGA native resolutions produce high-definition images.

Like other NEC P Series projectors, the P525WL and P525UL offer a combination of installation series features at a low cost, including manual horizontal and vertical lens shift, 1.6x zoom lens, and HDBaseT input. Quick startup and shutdown ease operations for users, and the projectors’ quiet operation enables distraction-free presentations.

Both models offer advanced networking capability and improved wireless collaboration capability. They feature dual HDMI for switching between Blu-ray, computer, or other digital sources; USB with 2.0A support for powering third-party devices; LAN port for network control and asset management; and Optional Wireless Module (NP05LM1) with MultiPresenter capability for up to 16 simultaneous connections.

“These projectors deliver brilliant colors, and NEC’s original sealed optical technology introduces a significant advancement, eliminating the need for a filter in LCD-based projectors,” said Ryan Pitterle, product manager, NEC Display Solutions. “The P502WL-2 and P502HL-2 have been very successful, but we’ve seized the opportunity to combine LCD technology along with our unique cooling system to improve color performance for our customers while maintaining the maintenance-free operation they want.”

The Bottom Line: Both projectors are designed to provide a flexible, affordable, no-maintenance solution for projector installations in higher education classrooms, conference rooms, and other locations where a large, high-quality image is desired. The P525WL and P525UL are backed by a five-year warranty with NEC’s InstaCare replacement program included. They will begin shipping in January at a minimum advertised price of $2,299 (P525WL) and $3,099 (P525UL).

The What: Canon U.S.A. has introduced two new 4K Laser LCOS Projectors: the REALiS 4K6020Z and 4K5020Z. Compact and lightweight, both new projectors measure 18.8 inches wide by 7.1 inches high, by 21.4 inches deep and weigh 41.8 pounds, making both units the smallest and lightest projectors in their class, according to the company. Canon is also adding to its lineup of RS projector lenses with the introduction of the RS-SL07RST 4K Standard Zoom Lens.

The What Else: The laser-light source for both projectors can achieve up to 20,000 hours of operation in typical use or up to 40,000 hours when in Long Duration Mode. The laser-light source allows the projectors to start up in as little as two seconds while in Fast Boot mode, as compared to conventional lamp projectors that may require additional time to light up and stabilize brightness. In addition, users are able to create presets to be set up to their specific preferences and needs.

The HDR technology of both projectors increases the dynamic range ability, expanding not only the color gamut range but also the overall brightness, resulting in a more realistic and lifelike image. Additionally, the projectors support HDR10 and Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG), which produce broadcast-quality HDR images. HLG is becoming widely popular in broadcast industry use.

Both projectors feature LCOS panels and Canon’s proprietary AISYS optical system that helps to deliver 6,000 and 5,000 lumens respectively. This technology, when combined with true Native 4K (4096x2160) resolution, helps both projectors to produce a cleaner and more robust image with virtually no grid lines.

The RS-SL07RST projector lens is the seventh in the lineup and features Canon’s trademark red line around the barrel of the lens, signifying the highest level of Canon optical engineering and quality. All seven RS projector lenses are compatible with the two new projectors.

“As the demand for 4K projection continues to grow, Canon understands that we need to offer customers a variety of options that best suit each individual installation,” said Kazuto Ogawa, president and chief operating officer, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “Not all 4K is created equal, which is why Canon is so excited that both new models feature true Native 4K resolution producing outstanding image quality with robust colors and high contrast.”

The 4K6020Z and 4K5020Z projectors are compatible with seven optional genuine Canon interchangeable lenses for a wide variety of applications, and their high dynamic contrast of up to 22,000:1 in the 4K6020Z and 20,000:1 in the 4K5020Z is achieved by the combination of an image engine that analyzes the contrast of each frame and a double-door type shutter system which allows the iris to operate fast, tracking scenes instantly and reducing light leaks. They cover 99.9 percent of the sRGB color space and support a range of connectivity options, including HDMI, HDBaseT, Wi-Fi, and more. They are also compatible with Canon Service Tool for PJ App. Six preset Image modes provide different variations of color reproduction characteristic suitable for the type and projection environment, includes DICOM Simulation mode and additional five customizable modes that can be stored.

The new RS-SL07RST 4K Standard Zoom Lens features the distinguished red line around the barrel, indicating the highest level of Canon design and superb image quality. The lens can project images up to 600 inches and can even project onto curved surfaces, maintaining focus in the center of the image when peripheral focus has been adjusted.

The Bottom Line: The new 4K6020Z and 4K5020Z Native 4K Laser LCOS Projectors are ideal for a variety of applications, including art galleries, museums, schools and medical institutions. They are also suitable for product design and simulation use where both high-quality imaging and accurate color reproduction are a must.

The Canon 4K6020Z and 4K5020Z Native 4K Laser projectors and RL-SL07RST Standard Zoom Lens are all scheduled to be available in late November 2018 for a suggested retail price of $45,799.00, $43,499.00 and $8,000.00 respectively.

The What: Christie has launched the Christie Mirage SST, a high-performance RGB laser projection solution featuring Christie TruLife electronics.

The What Else: With TruLife electronics, the Mirage SST delivers 4K resolution at 120fps, or, with an optional license, 480fps at 2K resolution. High frame rates remove blurring and strobing effects in fast-moving images, critical to creating an immersive experience for audiences. The Mirage SST further creates an ultra-realistic experience by achieving greater than 90 percent of the Rec. 2020 color space and 5,000:1 on/off contrast with ultra-high contrast lenses. With rich, highly saturated colors, a more natural color reproduction is also possible. 

“The Mirage SST joins the recently released D4K40-RGB in Christie’s lineup of RGB laser projectors,” said Mike Garrido, senior product manager, Christie. “The Mirage SST brings flexibility to system design and incredible image fidelity, and, as a result, we believe the creation of the next generation of spectacular, immersive visual experiences is now possible.” 

The Christie Mirage SST can be installed in single or multi-projector configurations and is compatible with Christie Mystique Install, which simplifies the design, installation, and maintenance of multi-projector arrays, and Christie Guardian, which offers automated, invisible, real-time blended image correction, even when content is playing.

The Bottom Line: Featuring a compact, fiber-coupled projection head, the Mirage SST is well suited for complex, demanding applications including theme park attractions, dome theaters, and planetariums. Weighing 110 pounds (50 kilograms) and with its small form factor, the Mirage SST projection head enables installation where space constraints have previously been a barrier. The remote light source allows the chilling equipment to be placed away from the projector head, saving space and providing a whisper-quiet experience for audiences.

The Christie Mirage SST ships in Q1 2019 with a three-year parts and labor warranty.

The What: Optoma unveiled the Optoma ProScene ZU750, a new addition to its successful ZU660, ZU80, and ZU1050 projectors.

The What Else: The Optoma ProScene ZU750 is a WUXGA laser phosphor projector designed for museums, boardrooms, houses of worship, and entertainment venues. All of It Now, a creative design agency in San Francisco, used Epson laser technology, including its LightScene EV-105 accent lighting projector, in Wilson Sporting Goods' high-traffic store venue to empower a creative shopping experience. The new store is open now through September 9, 2018 on the grounds of Flushing Meadows Corona Park in New York City.

The What: Hitachi America has added to its Collegiate Series line with the addition of two new 3LCD laser projectors, the LP-EU5002 and LP-EW5002.

The What Else: Both the LP-EU5002 and the LP-EW5002 offer 5,000 ANSI lumens of brightness with resolutions ranging from WUXGA 1920x1200 to WXGA 1280x800, respectively. These maintenance-free operation projectors have 20,000 hours of light source life and up to 50,000 hours with Long Life 2 mode. Both models have multiple digital inputs (HDMI and HDMI/MHL), 3LCD projection technology, and a contrast ratio of 500,000:1. They are equipped with 360-degree installation, a 1.6x zoom lens, and Perfect Fit 2, which helps integrators save time during installation.
