Originally, the KVM switch was originally created to improve the control of computers within data centers. They began as mechanical rotary switches that handled keyboard and video feeds, with mice being added in the 1990s after they became popular. Since then, KVM technology has evolved from analog to digital and added network connectivity, which has led to what is now called “KVM over IP.”

The space-saving and efficiency advantages offered by KVM switches explain their ongoing popularity. “KVM technology allows operators to control one or more computers from a separate location as if they were sitting directly in front of them,” explained Catherine Koutsaris, product marketing manager at Matrox Video. “KVMs are especially useful because they enable secure, high-performance remote access without compromising video quality, latency, or reliability. IP KVM systems transmit audio, video, and USB signals over standard networks, allowing workstations to be centralized while operators work wherever it makes the most sense, improving flexibility, security, and operational efficiency.”

That said, the days of the KVM switch serving merely as a remote control system for servers are over. “KVM’s real value is that it decouples people from places and humans from hardware," said Thomas Tang, president of Apantac. "Once broadcasters and others in AV start designing their workflows around this philosophy, KVM stops being infrastructure and starts becoming a strategy."

An Invisible Backbone

The ability to deploy KVM over IP has unleashed this technology’s potential, supporting the strategic transformation that Tang has alluded to. His view is shared by AV integrators such as Michael Blankenship, solutions architect at FORTÉ.

“In modern broadcast environments, KVM has evolved into a critical control layer that allows broadcasters to centralize computers, support flexible and remote workflows, and maintain frame-accurate control of high-performance systems without compromising reliability or security,” Blankenship told SCN. “Today’s KVM systems aren’t just keyboard and mouse switches. In broadcast and production, they function as workflow enablers, remote production backbones, space and infrastructure optimizers, and offer a security and resiliency layer.”

To prove his point, Blankenship noted that KVM allows studio and post-production computers to be removed from human-centric offices and relocated to secure server rooms. Doing so reduces noise and heat in the offices themselves, while maintaining real-time access to the equipment.

KVM is also being used in OB vans and live production trailers, allowing on-location operators to switch between multiple feeds and systems without latency. “For instance, Sky Germany uses G&D KVM for simultaneous live sports broadcasts, while Barco CTRL powers control rooms for utilities and media,” Blankenship offered.

“A strong example is entertainment solution company PRG’s deployment of Matrox Extio 3 IP KVM extender for a large-scale entertainment event in Saudi Arabia,” Koutsaris added. “In this deployment, operators remotely accessed UHD 4K media servers over a 10 Gbps IP network, ensuring reliable control across long distances without sacrificing performance.”

Optimizing Workflows and Workspaces

Besides providing a critical control layer for broadcasters, video producers, and other content creators, KVM is solving other problems for them as well.

Case in point: “KVM technology is helping broadcast and production users transition from traditional SDI environments to flexible, IP-based workflows,” said Neil Firth, senior product manager at Adder Technology. “As operations become more distributed and dynamic, our award-winning ADDERLink INFINITY IP KVM range enables centralized and remote access to critical systems with ultra-low latency and pixel-perfect image quality. These key features allow production teams to work more efficiently, scale with confidence, and stay focused on delivering high-quality content rather than managing complex technology.”

KVM products also solve several critical challenges, including distance, scalability, collaboration, and reliability, Koutsaris said. “KVMs also enable multi-user access, allowing teams to collaborate more efficiently, and support long-distance fiber connections for large venues," she noted. "These capabilities reduce physical constraints, improve operational resilience, and help production teams maintain consistent performance in complex, high-pressure environments.”

By removing bulky hardware from operator desks, Blankenship said KVM resolves space and ergonomics issues. "It also helps maintain cybersecurity through network isolation while enabling operational control, and workflow efficiency through multi-view layouts, and quick switching that improves situational awareness," he added.

Current Tech Trends

We have seen just how far KVM technology has come from its humble analog beginnings. So, what's on the horizon? According to Koutsaris, the technology is evolving toward IP-first designs built on open standards, higher resolutions, and tighter integration with broadcast and Pro AV ecosystems.

“At Matrox Video, products like Avio 2 reflect this shift by supporting open standards such as IPMX, SMPTE ST 2110, and NMOS," she added. "Advances in IP KVMs now support higher resolutions and lower latency, making KVMs suitable not just for control rooms but also for live events, hybrid production, and distributed workflows.”

“KVM is constantly evolving to meet the increasing requirements for flexible systems, remote access, and high-performance workflows where purely software-based solutions can fall short of critical industry applications,” Firth said. “Our ARDx next-gen KVM over IP technology goes beyond the standard keyboard, video, and mouse extension by offering secure, scalable, and out-of-band remote access with no distance limitation. These key advances are responding to the various requirements of operators, while remaining collaborative and sharing information without boundaries.”

Speaking as an AV architect, Blankenship has seen several advances in the KVM space. “They include Barco CTRL’s Zero Trust architecture and multiview scalability to hundreds of sources,” he offered. “Also noteworthy is G&D’s ControlCenter-IP 2.0 with bluedec compression for pixel-perfect video and latency-free switching, and Thinklogical’s IA-accredited fiber-optic KVM matrix switches for multi-classification environments.”

For his part, Tang characterizes KVM over IP as the ever-evolving “dominant remote control paradigm” in AV that provides full remote access to systems over both LAN and WAN. “Unlike software-based remote tools, it enables true BIOS-level control, allowing systems to be accessed and managed even when the operating system is unavailable—a key capability supported by Apantac KVM solutions,” he explained. “This makes remote KVM especially valuable for broadcast operations with distributed teams, REMI workflows, and decentralized production hubs.”

Tang also noted that KVM technology has advanced significantly in video performance. “Modern KVM extenders now support higher resolutions and improved color fidelity over IP, while optimized compression and transport methods keep latency effectively imperceptible to operators," he continued. "Apantac KVM systems operate over standard 1 Gb Ethernet, regardless of whether the signal is FHD or UHD, minimizing infrastructure costs while still delivering ultra-low latency of approximately 17 ms. This combination of high image quality and low latency is critical in live production environments, where signal fidelity and operator responsiveness directly impact on-air performance.”

A Virtual Future

As for the future of KVM? Expect greater advances to come, going even further beyond KVM’s initial function as a remote control system for computers.

“KVM has a significant role in emerging areas such as virtual production, where live action and real-time rendering engines converge," said Firth. "As virtual production expands from its filmmaking origins into live broadcast environments, KVM can support increasingly complex, multi-system workflows by enabling flexible, centralized control. As this technology continues to evolve, KVM will adapt alongside it, helping production teams manage new tools and workflows while enhancing creative and operational efficiency.”

“KVM could solve potential issues in a variety of areas,” Blankenship added. “They include cloud and virtualization integration with virtual desktops and cloud workflows, AI-driven switching, and new markets for KVM such as healthcare, education, and esports for secure remote access.”

Ultimately, KVM is no longer about connecting a keyboard, monitor, and mouse to a remote computer; instead, it's about connecting creative intent to technical execution, regardless of physical location. As the AV industry embraces the cloud, AI, and virtual production, KVM will be the silent yet essential bridge that allows this industry to create—and work—without boundaries.

Today’s control room environments are increasingly complex—and integrators, contractors, and consultants are expected to offer design and deployment of solutions comprising a wide range of sources, data, devices, and tasks while ensuring both efficiency and reliability. To do so, AV-over-IP (AVoIP) partnered with IP-based KVM technologies is becoming a go-to combination for optimizing control rooms.

[USB-C and AVoIP]

VoIP and KVM technologies have historically been deployed as separate systems, each with its own infrastructure and management requirements. Today, control room systems that integrate KVM and AVoIP into a single solution not only boost efficiency but also simplify management.

To differentiate their offerings, integrators are now not only recommending, implementing, and integrating best-in-class solutions, but they are also accompanying customers with their expanding and future control room needs, offering support for their technology roadmaps/upgrades. This can include a full range of post-implementation services, from offering basic service contracts to full-service support or new technology upgrades. In doing so, service and solutions providers are becoming integral to their clients’ control room build and operations.

Clean Up This Mess

KVM-over-IP together with AVoIP technologies allow control room operators to deploy and smoothly switch between physical and virtual systems, monitor the systems across several desktop displays, and work more collaboratively by sharing ultra-high-resolution visuals on a video wall. Additionally, these technologies allow operators to streamline control room operations and reduce response times in critical situations.

Integrating video wall management features within KVM systems enables more flexible display control minus the complexity and costs. And, when they are equipped to monitor and manage multiple sources efficiently, operators can focus on critical tasks and collaborate more effectively with colleagues, boosting control room efficiency and responsiveness.

As the year progresses, it’s likely we'll continue to see a reduction of hardware at the operator workstation, along with centralized monitoring platforms, virtualization, and more migration to IP-based solutions. We're already seeing movement around replacing legacy hardware to reduce clutter. IP KVM can replace many devices and “clean up” the area around the operators.

Loud and clunky workstations are now being moved into a server room away from the operators’ desk and being replaced by a single desktop receiver that handles many (if not all) operator tasks. This also protects valuable computer hardware and software assets, keeps physical computers free of dust and debris, and guards them against hacker threats. Command and control operators can now keep a clean and secure workspace without the extra heat or noise generated by computers.

Centralized Monitoring Demands

The command and control room solutions market will continue to be driven by the increasing demand for centralized monitoring systems across various industries. Advanced IP KVM solutions now have features that consolidate access to multiple systems, applications, and data sources into a single interface, whereas legacy systems rely on direct hardware connections requiring many additional devices.

With centralized monitoring, control room operators can now access the same systems in different locations for real-time collaboration and quickly hand off tasks without having to physically relocate. This also allows multiple operators to monitor different aspects from a centralized interface.

For example, many clinical lab customers are seeing significant improvements in the ability to monitor and collect data. KVM innovations have improved real-time data collection from analyzers and other pre-analytical instruments. The importance here is that KVM systems can centralize outpatient blood sampling and the integration of the various 24/7 laboratory units giving both patient research and scientific research easy facilitation using the same infrastructure—all with a workable, uniform, and standardized solution.

We will continue to see the combination of various technology components in the control room, such as systems control and video wall processing, under a single KVM solution. This is particularly true in the control room solutions market that may have multiple distributed systems, multi-monitor setups, and video wall connectivity. As these systems scale, becoming more diverse and complex, they must have a simplified user experience.

When developing a KVM solution for command and control, designers must build in real-time responsiveness to support high-resolution multi-displays. Fully scalable KVM systems are core to the future demands of a control room.

Plus, a reliable 24/7 environment requires redundancy and failover alternatives. The control room system needs to easily integrate with legacy hardware, offer user-friendly interfaces, and consider ergonomics to optimize operator efficiency and situational awareness. Most importantly, command and control centers must be carefully designed with ergonomics in mind to reduce human error incidents.

Evolution and AI

In essence, as control room operations evolve, organizations working with advanced IP-based KVM technology will have the ability to easily scale up connectivity, add systems and AV sources, and extend the scope of monitoring and control to address changing requirements and stay flexible. It is incumbent on Pro AV designers and integrators to consider critical elements including bandwidth requirements, monitor specifications, video resolutions, users and sources, cabling, and unique or specialized connection requirements.

In modern control rooms, ultra-low latency is crucial, as latency delays can be disastrous. Advanced KVM solutions must allow tailored configurations that enable complete operator control of all these various technologies at their console.

The interesting aspect in KVM technology is how AI will fit into the picture. There is a lot of talk around the integration of AI with KVM, but at this point it seems to just be investigative in nature. However, there is a world of possibilities around AI through analytics, automation around decision making, and potentially remote monitoring capabilities.

From system log data to video screen data, mouse, and keyboard interactions, there are tons of data flowing through an IP KVM matrix system. It’s feasible that AI can aggregate real-time data from the multiple sources connected to the matrix. This data could possibly be utilized to improve latency, strengthen security, even further automate workflows.

otentially, AI could analyze network traffic data to identify latency in connected video streams, monitor data packet flows in networks, and further optimize routing efficiency in control room solutions. From there, AI could not only analyze the data, but detect anomalies, trigger alerts through automation, and even predict system failures based on switching delays, network usage, or hardware performance trends. AI is shaping the future in ways we are only beginning to understand, and this is especially true in KVM.

In 1982, Andy Streitfeld took a $30,000 loan from his grandmother and founded AMS Productions in the spare bedroom of his Bedford, TX, home. More than four decades and a name change later, AMS Pictures continues to offer video production and studio rentals in the Dallas area, while also producing original documentaries and unscripted TV programs. Since 2010, Apantac has been a force behind all that the company does.

The full-service production company has attracted clients like Texas Instruments, Ross Perot, and ABC Radio over the years, and its original programming has been featured on Reelz, Showtime, History, Velocity, Bio, HGTV, Food Network, and The Cooking Channel. In 2010, AMS Pictures reached a turning point as it began its switch to HD. Having the right gear is imperative—and the first big change was converting to KVM systems, a trend that continues to grow in production houses in 2025.

[Striving for Sustainability Success]

Bret Harrell, COO of AMS Pictures, called KVM "essential to the operation" of his team's HD productions. "All of the PCs and Macs in our TOC and control rooms are on one large KVM system," explained Harrell. "We have about 15 terminals and 16 computers on our KVM. This allows us to be very efficient and use any PC from any position in any [of the three] control room."

Next came the multiviewers, which established a relationship with Apantac that continues today. "We saw the advent of multiviewers become popular in the 2000s, with many facilities upgrading to multiviewers during renovations," Harrell recalled. "When we fully upgraded AMS to HD in 2010, using multiviewers was really the only economical and practical option.

"I remember our research back in 2010 to select a multiviewer system for our facility," Harrell continued. "We knew that once we selected one, we would be committed for many years to come. I didn’t realize that it would still be going strong 15 years later in 2025, but here we are. We selected Apantac because it had the best picture quality when scaling the source video. It also had an open API to integrate with custom software."

Harrell said the only maintenance that's been performed on the Apantac TAHOMA multiviewers has been "taking each one apart to clean the dust from the inside and replace some fans. They’ve been extremely reliable. Over the years, we’ve added additional Apantac TAHOMA frames to our system to expand our capabilities."

Today, the heart of AMS Pictures TOC and three control rooms on the live production side use nine frames of the Apantac TAHOMS multiviewers in various configurations, together providing about 100 multiviewer inputs feeding 25 multiviewer monitors.

"Between 2010 and 2016, [AMS Pictures] acquired a total of eight multiviewers," said Thomas Tang, founder and president of Apantac. "Going through our service and spare parts sales records, I found that over the past 15 years, [AMS Pictures] has incurred only $830 in maintenance costs. This case exemplifies how our technologies have enabled significantly extended equipment life, demonstrating the value of investing in reliable, future-proof solutions.”

Harrell pointed to the Apantac customer support as a primary reason this collaboration continues a decade-and-a-half later. He recounted a time that Tang himself worked with him and his engineers to revise software.

"I will say that this level of support makes it an easy decision to continue to purchase and use their products," Harrell added. "I have found that most vendors want to close out customer support cases as quickly as possible with the least amount of work. Not the case with Apantac. They seem to understand that if they listen to their customers, they can actually improve their products and make them better for everyone."

SCN: What prompted you to establish IHSE USA?

Manny Patel: When I started IHSE USA in 2009, it was a simple handshake agreement where my company and IHSE would each contribute 50% to the startup cost. IHSE Germany was already doing some business in the U.S. but wanted to expand name recognition. I took the role of president and CEO of the newly formed IHSE USA. I saw a specific niche opening for digital KVM systems used in broadcasting and production environments. Since that time, we’ve sold thousands of systems to TV broadcasters, video production studios, and news networks, and have partnered with some of largest manufactures in the industry for their backroom software and hardware development teams. 

SCN: Your KVM solutions are in use in several vertical markets. Currently, what are some of the top markets for IHSE USA?

MP: Many renowned institutions across vertical sectors, including broadcast, post production, banking, healthcare, maritime, air traffic control, and government rely on our high-class KVM solutions. Practically every industry uses computers, and in many cases their employees need to gain access to more than one—whether this is in the office or from remote locations across the world. 

[Making the Case for KVM]

SCN: What kind of installation would benefit most from a KVM matrix switch?

MP: Mainly, KVM technology will continue to play a pivotal role in both commercial and government control room applications. In our case, we see high-end applications where 16-400 computers would be connected to the switch and accessible to 20 or more users. Lately, we are seeing a large demand for remote access using KVM-over-IP systems integrated with our traditional KVM baseband systems. 

SCN: Are you seeing more interest in KVM or KVM-over-IP solutions?

MP: Although our baseband KVM systems have their own advantages for mission-critical projects, there is a shift to KVM-over-IP for Pro AV and broadcast users. Remote workers present a unique challenge to protect confidential company data, because remote work environments usually do not have the same safeguards in place that would be found in an office environment. While there may be different levels of security in an office environment, it becomes a much higher risk to the company to prevent security breaches once a computer leaves the office security perimeter. 

SCN: How do you keep KVM-over-IP systems secure?

MP: Currently, businesses and government organizations seek to prevent network cyberattacks by physically isolating the IP networks via private or secure network protocols. Mission-critical control systems and those that carry commercially-sensitive data must be secure from external access by unauthorized agents. KVM-over-IP allows low latency solutions for remote access, but still requires a professional on-staff network manager for service and troubleshooting in environments where 24/7 operations is critical. 

SCN: What is a KVM display management system and how does it differ from a typical KVM system?

MP: Like the legacy KVM, the KVM display management system provides the bridge that allows users to control and switch between multiple PCs or servers via a single keyboard, mouse, plus utilizing multiple video monitors and sharing remote video sources from the local desktop. The main difference being a DMS can be configured to support multiple monitors, multiviewers, or wall processors as well as supporting configurable EDID, adding multiple layers of security, and managing resolution compatibility to maintain image consistency across different types of display connector types. 

[DMS: Next-Gen KVM]

SCN: What are the advantages of KVM extenders?

MP: KVM extenders enable you to remove the critical data from computers away from the operator’s environment. For this purpose, computers are usually moved out of studios, editing rooms, and control centers and housed in access-protected and air-conditioned areas. From the equipment room, fiber optics, CATx cables, or IP structures extend the computer signals back to the workplaces. KVM allows users to be even further separated from each other by enabling them to work in other premises, while still getting full access to all the systems they need. 

SCN: A lot of companies are now touting web-based control and monitoring solutions—what does IHSE USA offer?

MP: Our latest web-based control software is Tera Web Control (TWC). TWC supplements the normal keyboard-based connection selection methods with a graphical user interface. Users can operate with their own mouse to select and switch individual source connections to their personal workspace or select from a range of predefined I/O configurations.

The TWC application depicts the arrangement of consoles and monitors as connection layouts. Creating and changing individual layouts is intuitive and can be undertaken without programming knowledge. It is a license-based software module integrated into the matrix architecture that runs via a normal web browser and is specifically developed for controlling and switching Draco tera KVM matrices. All access rights previously assigned in the matrix configuration are carried forward to the TWC, making setup extremely simple while providing optimal access security. 

SCN: How can systems contractors better position themselves to profit from products and/or services you have to offer?

MP: Although the industry still identifies with KVM, our focus is to migrate our SIs to a more inclusive term of DMS. A DMS switching system is primarily designed to provide a user experience comparable to a direct connection to the target PC and, at the same time, offering connectivity to a large variety of different PCs providing control commands and giving access to many different software applications running on different PCs, servers, or in the cloud. DMS will also enable status information about which user stations or operator desks are connected to which target application.

Technical staff must be trained to set up the system and configure users, the switch, and connected applications. The key differentiator of a DMS is its end-to-end, purpose-built design. This includes the switch enabling the handling of all signals with a single unit. At the edge of the system, the extender endpoints process system information, multiplex and encode/decode payload information, and transmit/receive all information over a single line connection to and from the DMS matrix switch.

SCN: What’s next for KVM for the Pro AV industry?

MP: Today’s system designers for AV signal management are going through a transition to eliminate the traditional stove-piped communications concept to a more open-source infrastructure. The ability to obtain, gather, process, and distribute information effectively is key for many system designers using KVM as DMSs. With the adoption of 4K (and the potential of 8K) in the broadcast and post-production industries, emerging features such as high dynamic range (HDR) and high bit rate resolutions are also pushing the boundaries for DMS infrastructure and distribution equipment.

SCN: How long have you been with this company, and what are your responsibilities?

Scott Norder: I joined RGB Spectrum in 2011, so it's been a fulfilling journey of 13 years. I started as the VP of Marketing, progressively took on operations and engineering roles, and have been serving as the COO for the past nine years. My favorite aspect of all these roles is the opportunity to witness ideas evolve from inception to practical use. I have a passion for innovation and making meaningful connections through technology. I also cherish solving customer problems and providing effective solutions, which aligns perfectly with our mission at RGB Spectrum. 

SCN: RGB Spectrum has built its reputation, of course, on its government-based command and control deployments, but what other vertical markets have been installing your video wall solutions?

SN: While we are well-known for our robust command and control solutions in government sectors, RGB Spectrum's video wall systems are versatile and have been successfully implemented across a diverse range of industries. Notably, government agencies have leveraged our technology to enhance their surveillance and operational management, providing a seamless and secure environment for guests and staff. In the enterprise field, our solutions support critical monitoring and real-time information sharing. Additionally, public safety operations use our technology for administrative and security purposes, enhancing safety and operational efficiency.

SCN: When it comes to control room design, what is an important element that potential customers tend to overlook?

SN: One critical aspect often overlooked in control room design is the comprehensive consideration of workflow and data management. Having observed various setups in public safety, process control, and security, it's clear that many installations do not fully consider the operator’s daily experience. SCN: What are the most important features in a wall processor?

SN: The key features of a high-quality wall processor include speed, image fidelity, efficiency, and reliability. These processors must consistently perform well without the need for constant adjustment or maintenance. Synchronicity and clarity of images on large displays are paramount; without the right technology, the effectiveness of a video wall can be severely compromised. Investing in a superior processor and thoughtful design ensures longevity and better return on investment. 

SCN: How is AV-over-IP changing the game for wall processors and multiviewers?

SN: AV-over-IP technology has revolutionized the way video content is managed and distributed. It allows video streams to be repurposed and accessible beyond the physical limits of traditional setups. This means that video can be encoded and shared not just on wall processors but across various locations and even to mobile devices, extending the reach and flexibility of control room capabilities and enhancing situational awareness across multiple platforms. 

SCN: What makes your Zio line of AVoIP products unique in the industry?

SN: Our Zio product line is uniquely designed to support AV-over-IP across diverse environments—not just within a single room or building but across multiple industries and agencies. AV Network caught up with Black Box at InfoComm 2024 to learn about its new control room solutions and industry trends.

As it has for many years, Black Box continues to solve the unique challenges and needs that its customers have in the control room space across all vertical markets, whether it's a Network Operations Center (NOC) or a Security Operations Center (SOC), or in places like aerospace, defense, transportation, and, of course, the broadcast and media space.

Keith Lanson, the marketing director at Black Box, unveiled the company's latest control room solutions at InfoComm 2024. These include the Radian video wall processor, the Emerald family of IP KVM products, and the DESKVUE and AV WALL products, all designed to meet the evolving needs of the control room industry.

During the discussion, Eric Farkas, a senior product engineer at Black Box, shed light on the evolving landscape of AV technology in control rooms. He touched upon various aspects, including the advancements in display technology, the shift in source types, the changing logistics within control rooms, the emerging trends in video walls, and the strategies to address security concerns. 

One of the significant trends is that the operators don't always have a workstation in front of them, which means the equipment is further away. "That's why things like AV extension, AV distribution, and KVM extension while processing technology are so important," said Farkas. "The other thing that's changed significantly is the type of sources. We're seeing streaming sources as opposed to real video sources."

Efficiency in the control room is really important today. "One of the ways that Black Box addresses that is everything from our innovative design, seamless integration of physical and virtual machines, and the way that we support our control room ecosystem with ISO certified products, global 24/7 customer service," said Lanson.

Economy, convenience, and simplicity are constant goals for AV installers, operators, and users—which happens to be the sweet spot for KVM technology. Short for keyboard, video, and mouse, KVM allows users to control and switch between multiple computers while using a single set of peripherals.

For anyone who uses multiple computers at a workstation, KVM is an easy sell. Using KVM switches to control multiple computers from one user interface centralizes control, but it also reduces the number of peripherals that need to be purchased and eventually replaced. “Additional benefits of KVM switches include decreased desktop clutter and improved worker productivity and situational awareness,” added Erin Glenn, Belkin International’s director of product management, secure KVM.

Advanced Functionality

According to "A Close Look at Modern Keyboard/Video/Mouse Switching," a white paper by Tony DeKerf and Gary D. Davis from 1995 (and revised in 2000), the ability to use a single keyboard, mouse, and monitor to control multiple computers via a KVM switch was introduced, in rudimentary form, back in the 1980s. Decades later, many advances have made KVM switching far more efficient and secure.

[Executive Q&A: Embracing Alliances]

“Ongoing enhancements include improved resolution and contributing to an improved user experience—certain KVM solutions now accommodate up to 5K resolution,” said Aaron Johnson, product manager with ATEN Technology. “Additionally, recent advancements in KVM technology facilitate audio and microphone sharing. The integration of virtual media also enables the utilization of local drive resources, facilitating remote installations, patch upgrades, and other related tasks as needed.”

KVM has also been expanded to move beyond remote control of multiple computers. “Cameras, Bluetooth, and mass storage are now available to be routed using KVM as well,” said Aurora CEO/CTO Paul Harris.

“Over the years, secure KVM switches have advanced by enabling enclave switching over long distances,” Glenn added. “Existing technology allows extenders to deliver point-to-point video and USB across distances, but there's no way to switch the video path from enclave to enclave. The combination of KVM, extenders, and keyboard with integrated remote-control pad enables enclave switching and long-distance transmission of video/USB over copper or fiber infrastructure for audiovisual projects challenged by signaling limitations. This is ideal for remote desktops, conference rooms, command and control, and secure video access.”

Recently, even more capabilities have been added to KVM systems. “Modern features include Panel Array Mode, both in static and live configurations,” said Johnson. “The introduction of remote authentication and authorization passthrough enables users to leverage their own active directory credentials. Boundless Switching is also worth noting, facilitating the seamless transfer of mouse or USB signals among connected computers.  There's also been significant improvement in speed over the years, with certain newer models now tailored for compatibility with 10GB networks."

Let's Add IP

The ability to connect distant devices over IP networks have fundamentally transformed the nature of AV, and KVM is no exception. KVM-over-IP switches have extended traditional KVM capabilities by "allowing remote access and control over IP networks,” explained Dan Holland, marketing manager with IHSE USA. “While traditional KVM is ideal for local setups, KVM-over-IP provides flexibility for remote management. The choice between them depends on specific use cases and requirements, with both having their advantages.”

“KVM and KVM-over-IP serve distinct purposes in terms of remote access to devices,” Johnson agreed. “Standard KVM necessitates physical proximity, either at the rack or in-person at the desk, wherein a local user employs a KVM to control and access all devices connected to it."

In contrast, KVM-over-IP enables remote access from separate buildings or even separate countries. "Users can simply open a web browser, enter the KVM's IP address or name, and log in remotely. Again, this stands in contrast to local-only KVM setups, which are limited by cable distance between the KVM and the server, typically ranging from 10 to 15 feet, depending on signal requirements," Johnson said. "The key advantage of KVM-over-IP lies in its capacity for unlimited distance, offering flexibility for users located globally to connect and manage devices through a web interface.”

[Executive Q&A: Changing the Topology of AV]

Not surprisingly, the difference between working locally or across the globe results in some differences between KVM and KVM-over-IP in connectivity, access, and scalability, particularly in data center and server room use cases. “Secure KVM switches use physical cables to connect host devices and KVM-over-IP relies on network connections," Glenn offered. "KVM-over-IP supports multiple user connections and remote access and control. Secure KVM switches require single-user access and control. Secure KVM switches are hardware-based, where KVM-over-IP includes hardware and/or software solutions.”

Expanded Uses

Most people associate KVM with command-and-control functions as executed within government, military, or prison settings. However, Holland said its applications extend to various industries, including broadcast, post production, healthcare, and simulation. This is because KVM “facilitates efficient content creation, collaboration, and system management.”

KVM is also useful in many other applications, such as small or medium-sized server rooms, integration into production lines, control rooms, and remote/branch office data centers. “In the context of secure government applications, KVM facilitates users in accessing computers classified as either government-classified or unclassified, all within the same switch,” Johnson said.

In a conference room, KVM can be employed to link the room’s peripherals into the presenter’s laptop computer via its USB port, providing them with centralized device control. "We can also do 'roaming mouse,'" said Harris. "When you move the mouse from one edge to the next, it will automatically jump computers."

Seamless cursor-based switching is available in Belkin's Secure KVM Series. "In Secure KVM, seamless cursor-based switching transitioned to Guard Mode or Key Press Seamless Cursor Switching [KPSCS]. Instead of using front-panel buttons to switch between channels, KPSCS automatically switches the mouse and keyboard from one channel to the next once the mouse cursor crosses a display border onto the adjacent display while the correct keyboard key is held down," Glenn added. "Guard Mode requires a key press or a specific action, driving the mouse cursor from display to display. This ensures situational awareness as operators switch across secure enclaves.”

KVM can do even more when harnessed to a Display Management System (DMS). “It provides centralized control, monitoring, and configuration of KVM systems, enhancing overall efficiency while giving users a more secure way of directly accessing multiple computer sources,” said Holland.

Meanwhile, security is a prime feature of KVM-over-IP. “You need to keep it secure with encryption and, if using AVoIP, isolate the network switch,” Harris said. “It is important to find ways to manage and limit what can or cannot be sent over the method of extension."

[DMS: Next-Gen KVM]

As for the future of KVM? “It looks promising, with continuous advancements in technology,” Holland said. “We anticipate further integration with emerging technologies, enhanced virtualization support, and the development of more intuitive and user-friendly interfaces.”

“Looking ahead, KVM tech might shift toward fiber-based extensions,” added Johnson. “We're seeing more modular-format KVM switch boxes connecting physically to computers, but the future could bring remote virtual machine control. Or we might expect improvements like higher frame rates and faster USB signals for gaming applications.”

KVM (keyboard, video, mouse) switchers were originally a simple switch box that connected a few computers at the user’s workstation, allowing the user to switch between the computers via a single keyboard, video monitor, and mouse. A user could put two or more physical computers at the same desktop and switch among them using a pushbutton on a switch box, or use a special keyboard macro (hotkey) to change from one computer system to the next.

[KVM: You’re in Control Anywhere]

Over the years, technology advancements allowed efficient ways to streamline operations via a web browser interface, KVM over physical IP networks, or simple on-screen display (OSD) selections from direct-connect peripheral extender boxes. This allowed remote access to hundreds of computer systems either directly or using an IP network. KVM systems allowed universal compatibility with any operating system—such as Windows, Mac, and Linux—because it only transmitted similar USB-HID or VESA-based graphic card resolutions.

Today, a new breed of KVM switches have been designed that allow users to easily control and configure computers at the desktop that manage what is seen on the display and what can operate via the keyboard and mouse. As many IT departments are operating at downsized levels and employees are being asked to manage more equipment with fewer resources, the ability to remotely manage and maintain performance of computer equipment has become an essential part of the Pro AV business model. Not only does the end user need to manage access to computers, but they also need to manage things like USB peripherals, multi-display settings, network settings, resource sharing, and security login access.

The legacy KVM switch was designed to basically be managed by an IT department professional, but today’s KVM systems have been simplified to allow nontechnical users the ability to access information they want pushed to the display with such things as simple touchpanel interfaces or keyboard commands. The new, user-friendly KVM systems are more focused on helping with display management at the desktop than just getting computer access.

DMS Defined

Like legacy KVM systems, KVM display management systems (DMS) provide the bridge that allows users to control and switch between multiple PCs or servers via a single keyboard and mouse. They can also utilize multiple video monitors and share remote video sources from the local desktop.

The main difference is that a DMS can be configured to support multiple monitors, multiviewers, or wall processors as well as support configurable Extended Display Identification Data (EDID), add multiple layers of security, and manage resolution compatibility to maintain image consistency across different types of display connectors. The key success of any DMS is the EDID. EDID is a metadata format for display devices to describe their capabilities to a video source, such as a graphics card or STB, and is one of the most critical issues when setting up a DMS in Pro AV and broadcast facilities that have multiple computer systems to manage.

For example, in most budgetary cases, facilities purchase equipment at different times and cannot ensure that every monitor or computer operates as the same resolution or within the same operating system. Many facilities have mixed HDMI and DisplayPort graphic cards—and in some cases still use VGA. DMS offers integrated EDID management to make sure dissimilar computer systems can operate seamlessly between user stations.

Currently, businesses and government organizations seek to prevent network cyberattacks by physically isolating the IP networks via private or secure network protocols. Mission-critical control systems and those that carry commercially sensitive data must be secure from external access by unauthorized agents. Any system that relies on an IP network is likely to have exposed entry points and will require extensive firewall and isolation procedures to prevent attack.

Because USB flash drives and USB storage devices are such a dominant method of storing work files for remote work, it creates a significant issue for security and network administrators when these drives are connected to a home network. For network login administrators, this requires a full 256-bit encryption and VPN access requirement. DMS switching products like those offered by IHSE include the highest level of security protocols and VPN capabilities.

[USB-C: One Size Fits All?]

There are two active trends for next-gen DMS. Primarily, there is the requirement for latency-free remote access using 4K60 and beyond computer systems. Most network systems are still at 4K30, so as facilities start a refresh build or a new greenfield setup, the demand for full 4K60 is on the bid specification. Second, many larger facilities are looking to support multi-head 4K60 displays over fiber. As many facilities allow work-at-home setups, it is important to make operations between remote or local computer access as transparent as possible.

Streamlined Data for Esports

The ability to obtain, gather, process, and distribute information effectively is key to gaining operational superiority. Many system designers have found DMS switching to be an effective means to streamline data access while maintaining an important level of security and data quality.

System designers moving toward UHD video are depending on standards bodies to reduce the confusion surrounding the latest 4K and 8K technologies. Emerging markets are taking advantage of DMS as well, including esports for tournament production.

Attended by thousands of spectators in large venues and watched by millions online, these live events combine two production workflows: in-venue presentation and broadcast transmission. DMS KVM extenders and switches streamline both by controlling, switching, managing, converting, and delivering video and audio signals. In the venue presentation workflow, extenders provide the interconnection between player monitors and remotely located gaming computers, offering visually lossless video and instant interactive response to deliver the level of performance players’ demand.

For observers, DMS switches allow operators to instantly choose between live and recorded content for playout on massive screens above the players’ stage. In the broadcast workflow, switches enable production teams to create programming of the highest quality throughout the event, while extenders perform the vital function of translating between computer and broadcast frame rates, ensuring that live content is transmitted and replayed in pristine quality.

Moving Forward

DMS technology will continue to play a pivotal role in both commercial and government control room applications. For both work-at-home and facility locations, systems must be designed to be interoperable with broadcast and AV standards such as SMPTE ST-2110, NDI, IPMX, and others being developed for video and data transmission over a LAN/WAN system.

Latency and 4K60 will continue to be leading issues for manufacturers to solve for their customer base as systems migrate away from traditional analog or coaxial-type systems. The Pro AV market is evolving rapidly and moving to a network-centric, cloud-based infrastructure. DMS will also evolve, and this is something that is being addressed with HFR extenders for gaming, HDR for quality image processing, and lower latency for 4K60 production studios.

[Classic KVM vs. KVM-over-IP]

It’s hard to believe that KVM was once viewed as nothing more than a backroom access point for IT departments to fix computer connection problems from a centralized location. From these humble beginnings, it evolved into an integral part of almost any workflow at the desktop.

The KVM-to-DMS concept is growing in popularity among both commercial and government organizations as an effective tool to expand accessibility of a physical computer remotely over a traditional network infrastructure. Utilizing advanced security protocols and regardless of operating systems, the DMS design allows users to easily control sources remotely while benefiting system administrators for remote maintenance, support, and failure recovery.

SCN: Why is there an “OLY” after your name?

Thomas Tang: I am a two-time Olympian and participated in the 1988 and 1992 Winter Olympics in Alpine Skiing. I’ve always thought that this kind of dedication and hard work has helped me with the growing pains of starting my own business and pushing through the most challenging times. 

SCN: Why did you decide to start Apantac?

TT: I started as a flight simulation engineer in the late 1980s and early 1990s and worked on various projects including F16, F14, Apache, and other simulators. In the 1990s, when computer graphics were becoming a key part of the broadcast industry, the CEO of our company saw an opportunity to enter the broadcast industry. A group of us was assigned to work on computer graphics applications for television.

To make a long story short, our group was later sold to Vizrt, and I became one of the first 30 employees during the early days of the company. Today, Vizrt is a major player in broadcast graphics. 

[Executive Q&A: Technology Meets Vibe]

After a few years at Vizrt, I was recruited by Philips Broadcast as its North America and Asia Pacific marketing manager for the routers and master control business unit. After several divestitures and acquisitions between Philips Broadcast, Thomson Broadcast, and the Grass Valley Group, I was assigned to manage the marketing group for the Grass Valley video server division. During my time working in these large organizations, I found myself dedicated to offering many product ideas, yet they weren’t always a good fit for corporate product roadmaps.

At this point my wife offered up an interesting idea: If I was going to be working this hard, perhaps I should be working for myself—thus the beginning of Apantac. In Spring 2008, I moved my ideas into my basement and began the process of engineering, thankfully having that experience earlier on in my career. In 2009, Apantac exhibited at its first NAB, our first multiviewer product won a Broadcast Engineering “Pick Hit” award, and the rest is history. We now have over 200 products in our catalog. 

SCN: What are the short and long-term goals for your company?

TT: One of our core goals as a company is to help our customers with their product and application challenges. We’ve always taken the approach of listening to customer feedback and helping solve their issues by modifying our current products or building new ones. We also aim to bring our many years of experience in the broadcast industry to the Pro AV marketplace and deliver the reliability of broadcast product requirements to the Pro AV industry. In addition, we aim to solve challenges in both AV-over-IP and traditional baseband video. 

SCN: How is Apantac celebrating its 15th anniversary?

TT: We have been very fortunate that we have always had a very stable and consistent engineering, sales, and marketing team. And not to forget our technical support and back-office teams. We celebrated our 10th anniversary by shutting down the office for a week and inviting all our employees and their partners to a resort in Mexico. I look forward to doing something similar for our 15th anniversary. I feel that it’s so important that our team can all get together, relax, and recharge. 

SCN: Between HDBaseT, SDVoE, and NDI, Apantac certainly does not shy away from alliances. Why are these relationships important for your company?

TT: In the Pro AV industry, there are so many different methods to solve problems, and it’s important that we adapt to all the current standards. Each of the alliances you mentioned above has its unique advantages and we are open to all of them. This also includes the latest AV-over-IP standard, IPMX. 

SCN: You’ve also partnered with openGear. What are some of your most popular cards?

TT: Traditionally, openGear has served as a broadcast platform, so we have typically brought broadcast-focused cards to market. We’ve been an openGear partner since 2013, and historically our most popular cards are scan converters and frame synchronizers. However, in the past few years, we have started making more Pro AV-focused products, including KVM-over-IP, HDBaseT, SDVoE, and NDI. These cards for the popular openGear platform are gaining a lot of traction. 

[Executive Q&A: Simplified Systems through Standards]

SCN: How important are KVM solutions to Apantac’s business?

TT: In 2010, we started building KVM extenders, which were solving very specific problems for our customers. Servers and computers were always located in the equipment room, yet the user stations were far away, which meant reliable extenders were very important for the application. For the last four years, we’ve been designing, building, and delivering KVM-over-IP products, which have expanded our KVM extender line and broadened our KVM solutions to include KVM matrices. We now even have our KVM technology built into our multiviewers. Based on global customer feedback, we are proud to say our KVM products solve several key challenges, and are considered highly reliable and quality solutions. 

SCN: KVM or KVM-over-IP: What’s the more popular choice these days?

TT: This really depends on the application. KVM-over-IP is more flexible and popular, but there are still times when a point-to-point, low-latency KVM extender is required. To offer a complete solution to our customers, we have built a portfolio of products that now include KVM-over-IP, KVM point-to-point extenders, KVM switches, and multiviewers with integrated KVM functionalities.  

[One Standard to Rule Them All?]

SCN: What’s next for the Pro AV industry?

TT: There is a lot of buzz around AV-over-IP, and the Pro AV industry is looking for a standard. The alliances mentioned earlier (HDBaseT, SDVoE, NDI) already have large customer bases. IPMX is a fast-emerging set of standards and specifications for AV-over-IP. As AV-over-IP is evolving, I see a big challenge around interoperability. There is a need for products to serve as a bridge and allow interoperability between all the systems that support all the different standards and specifications.

EVS is globally recognized as the technology leader for video production, with wide-ranging HD-to-UHD/4K solutions for live sports, entertainment, and news content. You’ll find EVS’ premium media technologies in operations throughout the world, helping broadcasters, rights owners, and producers optimize live assets, engage audiences, and increase revenue streams by monetizing content across multiple platforms.

Customer research and education are critical to what EVS does. With training facilities in 12 locations around the world, it’s a way for them not only to introduce new products and offer in-depth, hands-on training, but to understand what customers need and how they use EVS’ products.

The crux of the new training center is the main instruction room with 10 seats—nine for the trainees and one for the trainer. There are two monitors per trainee plus two for the trainer, for a total of 20, in addition to two 70-inch monitors on the wall for all to see.

Besides using KVM (keyboard, video and mouse) for all seats in the training room, KVM also controls stations in the VIP room, a more comfortable, lounge-like room used for dedicated behind-the-curtains demos and proofs of concept with VIP clients. Two of the training room seats also feed the main conference room, making it possible for meeting participants to call up information from the training room during a meeting, if necessary. There are two more seats in the reception area to greet customers with EVS’ newest product, X-One, a touch-screen-enabled product that allows customers to walk up, touch it, play with it, and see features before getting into their in-depth training.

All screens are touch-screen-enabled, and every seat—monitors, keyboard, mouse, and touch screens—is accessible by KVM.

A Different Perspective

EVS’ KVM use case is different than in a traditional broadcast environment, where operators call up a product and use it to send something from point A to point B. Because they are training, they must be able to present and push the trainers’ screens to the operators and vice versa. They also need to preconfigure and save training sessions so they can be called up at will. And given the multi-room setup, they needed a quick, robust KVM switching capability to pass seat control from room to room at a significant distance within the building.

One major advantage IHSE KVM offers EVS over their old training facility is that trainers can now push their screens to the trainees, so trainees can see the lessons up close. Then, with a keyboard stroke, trainees can quickly switch back to their local machines to practice the functions in the lesson. By the same token, trainees can push their own screens to the large monitors in the front of the room, which come in handy when a trainee does something noteworthy that would benefit the rest of the class. Also, as long as the screens are next to each other, IHSE KVM enables one keyboard and mouse to span multiple screens and control multiple PCs.

The second advantage is that now multiple classes can be pre built using IHSE’s Draco tera tool software, which offers the flexibility to go from one training session to another with the push of a button. EVS uses the tera tool to build screen layouts and lessons for their many products, and then they simply take a few minutes to load the appropriate lesson before the class starts. This is a major improvement over the old way, which required a support engineer and a day’s worth of time to reconfigure the training lab for each new class.

[Roadmap 2023: IHSE]

The KVM specs for the training center include: an IHSE Draco tera Compact Matrix, 80-port, Cat-X; 53 CPU sources with a mix of EVS XT, Epsio, XF3, and IPDirector units, with CPU units based on DVI with RS-422 to support XT servers and serial control for LSM remote control panels; 11 CON workstations with a mix of touch-screen capabilities, based on HDMI with RS-422 to connect to LSM remote control panels; and some workstations use HDMI CON with local input to share between remote XT and local XT servers at the same workstation.

With IHSE KVM gear, the necessary flexibility and robust switching are in place to make the new training center shine. Thanks to a history of success with IHSE, and especially owing to the success with the US headquarters training center, EVS is looking to add IHSE KVM gear as they expand regional training centers.”

VuWall to Launch New KVM Solutions

VuWall will introduce its PAK KVM feature in version 3.5 of the TRx centralized management platform, and the VuStream 350 IP KVM encoder, in booth 1829. In addition, on June 15, Nick Mathis, VuWall's director of business development, will participate in an AVIXA educational panel session sharing his expertise on "AV-over-IP and Networked Video Walls: The Evolution of Control Rooms."

At InfoComm 2023, VuWall will demonstrate the newest version of TRx, a platform that combines AV-over-IP distribution, advanced multivideo wall control, and KVM management. Attendees will see how its new PAK KVM feature allows operators to control remote IP sources using keyboard and mouse on their personal video wall, local displays, or the main video wall. With TRx, users can configure, manage, and distribute virtually any source type to any display with an easy-to-use drag-and-drop interface. The new TRx KVM capabilities are ideal for multiroom visualization, situational awareness, control rooms, and remote operator environments.

[Classic KVM or KVM-over-IP? That Is The Question] 

VuWall will also showcase its new VuStream 350 IP KVM encoder appliance, which securely delivers high-quality video up to 4K performance over standard Gigabit Ethernet at low bitrates and ultra-low latency. VuStream 350 transmits HDMI video and audio, as well as keyboard and mouse on an encrypted AES-256 signal. It is fully compatible with VuWall's TRx centralized management software, ControlVu PoE touch panels, and PAK video wall processing nodes.

The company will also demonstrate the compact all-in-one VuStream 550 appliance on its SDVoE video wall. The VuStream 550 can be used as an SDVoE encoder or multiview decoder, for fiber or copper infrastructures. It is designed for distributing 4K60 video and audio over standard 10Gb IP network switches with no latency, providing an ultra-scalable, easy to deploy, highly reliable solution.

G&D KVM News: Networking, AV Education, and AV Products

At booth 2749, Guntermann & Drunck (G&D) will present its latest, German engineered, KVM solutions and their seamless integration into AV systems. G&D’s products ensure the best possible system homogeneity and interoperability in control room installations.

Magewell Bringing New Presentation, Streaming, and AV-over-IP Solutions to InfoComm 2023

Magewell is bringing exciting demonstrations of its latest solutions to InfoComm 2023 in Orlando next month. Exhibiting in booth 2855, the company will showcase recent releases alongside established products and some new surprises.

• Capture: The USB Fusion hardware and accompanying app offer powerful live presentation features to engage and impress both online and in-venue audiences. Deeply rooted in the Pro AV industry, KVM systems provide an ideal basis for the flexible, distributed switching of computer signals. They are used very successfully in control rooms and numerous other areas. For years, AV and IT applications have been merging more and more. KVM systems offer an excellent basis for operating various heterogeneous systems on a homogeneous user platform and thus gradually become the backbone of the entire IT infrastructure.

[You’re in Control Anywhere]

Generally, we distinguish between classic KVM systems and KVM-over-IP. The distinguishing criterion is the choice of transmission technology.

Are the signals transmitted directly, dedicated (proprietary) between the modules, or would you like to use an existing network for this purpose? And what technology is the better choice for your application? What are the differences, benefits, and challenges, and what should you be looking for when choosing a KVM system for your project?

With KVM systems, computers can be removed from the operators’ working environment, such as a control room, and housed in access-protected and air-conditioned areas. From the equipment room, fiber optics, CAT cables, or IP structures extend the computer signals back to the workplace.

KVM also allows users to be separated from each other by enabling them to work on other premises, while still getting full access to all the systems they need. Thanks to KVM, operators have uniform access to the most diverse systems.

The Video Signal

The most important difference between classic KVM and KVM-over-IP is the type of connection technology. Classic KVM uses dedicated cabling, meaning that a dedicated network is usually set up for these systems. This way, the available bandwidth can be optimally utilized without other network-capable devices taking up bandwidth for themselves. Operators benefit from optimum performance combined with the best possible image quality and a perfect user experience.

Plus, thanks to the standard connection technology, already existing in-house cabling can often still be used or even extended. Classic KVM systems also ensure fully secure access because of the complete control of the transmission medium.

One of the most important requirements for every KVM transmission, whether classic or over IP, is the video quality. The transmission of video signals must be pixel-perfect and as latency-free as possible, with high performance and without sharpness reduction.

The most important difference between the various classic systems lies in the video transmission. Some systems transmit the available information precisely and in real time. Here, transmission takes place uncompressed. Uncompressed KVM extender systems work as a kind of transparent intermediary between computer and workplace: Incoming information is output unaltered at the other end.

Uncompressing systems require a high bandwidth to transmit the incoming video signals from the computer's graphics card to the monitor. Transmission is precise, transparent, and absolutely lossless. However, a higher video resolution also requires a higher bandwidth, which in turn can only be provided by a more powerful, more expensive system.

[Future Proof Control Room Connectivity]

Classic, compressing KVM systems guarantee very high video quality thanks to their video compression, but also offer numerous other advantages. By compressing video signals, the systems require a lower bandwidth and allow for more cost-effective components. In addition, the matrix compatibility makes it easy to expand the systems quickly and easily at a later point. Due to the usually simpler cabling, they are often also more flexible in their application.

Especially in control rooms where uncompromising image quality, pixel perfection, and latency-free operation are essential, uncompressed systems or a pixel-perfect compression offer users significant advantages and a much better visual result compared to other “visually lossless” compression methods.

IP-Based System Basics

IP-based KVM systems have been gaining in importance for years. Many AV applications benefit greatly from the use of IP. Using existing cabling, switches, and routers not only saves costs, but also provides operators and administrators with flexibility and ease of use. Almost all components are plug-and-play devices, making it even easier and more comfortable to install and operate the system.  

In addition, IP networks are becoming more and more powerful. Control rooms designing their network infrastructure for 10 Gbit, 40 Gbit, or even 100 Gbit bandwidth are no longer an exception. This means there is usually sufficient bandwidth to easily scale IT installations and implement them over IP.

Transmission is compressed and IP-based over Ethernet networks. For existing infrastructures with a smaller bandwidth, several KVM devices can be bundled, depending on the application requirements. Here, the bandwidth per route can be reduced to approximately 300-500 Mbit. So, even a network with limited uplinks based on 1 Gbit can be sufficient to operate small KVM installations over IP.

Another advantage of IP-supported structures are duplex-capable IP networks. Therefore, the cabling can be used in both directions when transmitting KVM packets. This provides further flexibility, so cabling can be saved in cross-building installations, for example.

Security Concerns

Especially with KVM-over-IP, the issue of security is essential. Access to a network from the outside via the internet or, even easier, from the inside poses a risk. Using the appropriate software or operating systems, it is possible to scan the entire internal network for security holes.

Usually, such an attack is targeted at the weakest link in the chain. These can be so-called "man-in-the-middle" attacks, for example, where the entire network traffic is forwarded to a third party. Therefore, separating and segmenting networks is an important tool to protect the actual application from cyberattacks.

In KVM-over-IP systems, keyboard and mouse data, as well as audio and video data, must also be encrypted to prevent unauthorized users from tapping data transmissions and thus gaining access to internal information.

Especially for system-critical applications, the use of VPN, VLANs, and secure encryption is necessary to avoid unauthorized access. Here, input data, primarily from keystrokes (such as logins and passwords), is critical. Secure encryption and regularly exchanging the security key at the shortest possible intervals so that it cannot be read out over time are absolutely essential.

Make Your Choice

KVM-over-IP provides an optimal basis for flexible, distributed switching of computer signals, and facilitates the spatial separation between users and servers. It also allows users to be separated from each other by enabling them to easily work in other locations, while still giving them full access to all the systems they need. Thus, operators can use KVM technology to access their remote computers and work in real time and at full performance.

Whether you use KVM-over-IP or classic KVM, systems must be adaptable and scalable to ensure a safe investment for the future. Only in this way they can adapt to changing conditions and be expanded as the system architecture grows.

KVM-over-IP offers many opportunities to organize work and workflows in a resource-saving and cost-efficient way. The technology enables flexible, reliable, and highly secure infrastructures, creating user-friendly systems that are intuitive to use and easily scalable as needed.

It is simply not possible to generally recommend one or the other, because each project is based on individual requirements and framework conditions. Classic KVM has its own advantages and is still a good choice for many projects. But depending on the application, it may be worth comparing classic KVM systems with KVM-over-IP.

The Draco MultiView 4K60 enables the simultaneous operation of four computers displayed on a single display, with full access from a single keyboard and mouse. Offering four inputs and two outputs, the 1-RU solution is capable of handling four ultra-high-resolution video displays up to 4K/UHD at a 60Hz frame rate; users simply move the mouse from one display region to another. With programmable keyboard commands, real-time switching between video sources is also possible. By default, the system's individual screens can be arranged freely and displayed in different modes: full-screen, quad-screen, picture-in-picture, preview, 2+2, and free mode. Presets allow for instant switching between layouts. External control options are available via API or the GPIO interface.

The Draco tera IP Gateway provides IHSE KVM users with the ability to bridge multiple KVM matrixes over existing IP networks within buildings, across campuses, and between remote corporate offices. It combines the high levels of security and performance of the Draco tera KVM system with the flexibility and ease of connectivity inherent in IP-based communication. Therefore, it allows users to access remote computers and interact in real time with minimal latency and no visible artifacts, with the full confidence of a highly secure KVM system. In addition, Secure Core technology prevents direct access to the data within the KVM system from the IP network. This maintains the integrity of the KVM system and is consistent with a countermeasure against potential cyberattacks, allowing secure, IP-routable site networking of KVM matrix systems without compromising operational flexibility, security, or maintainability. It currently supports up to eight bidirectional grid lines for bidirectional KVM operation with video resolutions of up to 4K30 with a view that will be expanded to 4K60 soon.

The Draco DPS 4x1 KVM desktop series switches offer a wide range of features that makes this one of the most flexible 4X1 KVM switches ever. The DPS 4x1 is purposely designed to allow quick customization to support multiple displays. They can be customized to support single-head, dual-head, triple-head, or quad-head computer systems. Starting with a base DisplayPort four-input, single-head package, up to 4K60 can be supported. The DPS 4x1 base unit is a standard two-slot desktop chassis with support for USB-HID, USB 2.0, and optional audio connections for up to four computers to a single DisplayPort monitor. Control rooms are the operational heart of an enterprise, whether in the broadcast, public safety, industrial, or defense industry. The pandemic affected the way we worked with each other in ways that we had taken for granted—not only in the pro AV industry, but in every other industry as well. Social distancing led the way to hybrid work models. The operation of devices changed our behavior to bring your own device (BYOD).

At InfoComm 2021, IHSE will be showcasing products that provide hybrid work solutions to maintain secure environments between work-at-home and office connectivity. Remote workers present a unique challenge to protecting confidential company data because remote work environments usually don’t have the same safeguards in place that would be found in an office environment. When workers are at the office, they are typically behind several layers of security control and firewalls. While there may be different levels of security in an office environment, it becomes a much higher risk to the company to prevent security breaches once a computer leaves the office security perimeter. This is why it’s important to make sure you have security measures in place to protect peripheral devices from cyberattacks. 

IHSE’s Secure IP Remote Access Gateway (SIRA) overcomes the problems associated with security, accessibility, immediacy, and image quality of traditional packetized remote IP-connection to distant computers using client-server models. The signals passed between the operator and computer retain full integrity, have the highest possible transmission rate, and can be switched on demand. Most importantly, total system security is maintained. The only data transferred over the network is visual images and USB commands. So, it is almost impossible to mount cyber-attacks that take operational control of computers or plant malicious software.

SCN: What is your position and what does it entail? What are your responsibilities?

Bridget Hayes: Global TPS marketing director. I lead our TPS marketing team and strategy for the Black Box products business.

SCN: How long have you been in this position?

BH: Since April 1, 2021.

SCN: How has your background prepared you for your role?

BH: I started with Black Box in September 2017 as the company’s UK channel manager. It’s been my experience that Black Box recognizes the talent of its employees; I progressed to the position of Nordic and UK sales director, and then recently I was promoted to TPS global marketing director. I have a solid background in sales and indirect channel development, which involved driving the right tactics to achieve our overall goals. This experience and my understanding of Black Box’s overall business and markets has led me to drive a fast-paced and high-performance marketing team that develops and delivers on our core integrated campaigns.

[ What's the Status of the AV over IP Transition? ]

SCN: What are your short- and long-term goals?

BH: Black Box is a very customer-centric company, and we aim to provide the best products and services to our customers in our different verticals, which include, of course, the pro KVM and pro AV markets.

We continue to raise awareness of our pro KVM and pro AV offerings through creative and effective branding and by supporting the sales organization while delivering a personalized digital experience throughout the customer lifecycle.

SCN: What is the greatest challenge you face?

BH: Business is full of challenges. As a rule, it’s always important to be agile and flexible to best serve customers.

SCN: Where do you see the pro AV heading?

BH: In the world of video, we are finally reaching the inflection point of AV over IP. This is due to the fact that AV is simply everywhere. The pro AV community has finally stopped resisting IP-based video and audio distribution. The adoption rate has increased dramatically. We are going to see far more interactive and interconnected solutions in the future. Simple solutions are still going to exist, obviously, but importantly, for mass scalability, IP projects will rely on reliability and usability.

SCN: Are there new initiatives we are likely to see from Black Box?

BH: There are some amazing things happening now and on the horizon from Black Box. Black Box is known for products that make AV easy: easy to deploy, easy to expand, and easy to operate. Our three most prominent product lines—MCX Network AV, Radian Flex Video Walls, and iCompel Digital Signage—all accomplish that goal. What we are doing now will benefit both existing and future customers. As we look further out, we are integrating more to automate AV and make the AV experience far more efficient for end users and for our contractor partners.

[ Moving Forward with the Adoption of AV over IP ] 

SCN: How can systems contractors better position themselves to profit from products and/or services you have to offer?

BH: Two big things here. First, start every project with an AV strategy. This means for both short- and long-term projects. Whether for a 4x4 matrix or an interconnected signage platform that connects to the access control system, you need to have a strategy.

And second, embrace the power of Ethernet regardless of the size of your project. Don’t shy away from IP-based systems for small deployments. Using AV over IP means expansibility and scalability in the future. Embracing AV over IP as a standard allows the contractor to leverage that standard for future projects with the end user, regardless of whether those systems will be interconnected.

The What:Guntermann & Drunck (G&D) has announced VisionXS, a new line of high-performance KVM extenders with a bandwidth of 10Gb and video transmission for resolutions up to 4K. 

The What Else: Previous devices from the manufacturer support a data transfer rate of 1Gb per line. Thanks to G&D's self-developed compression method, full 4K video over 1Gb could already be transmitted. However, with a bandwidth of 10Gb, VisionXS opens up new possibilities for high-resolution and high-frame-rate video extension. Initially, the German manufacturer will provide extender modules for KVM over IP, followed by solutions for classic KVM systems for direct transmission. 

[Product Review: G&D KVM-over-IP System]

VisionXS extenders can be combined with G&D's matrix systems. For customers, this means even more flexibility, because VisionXS products can either be operated in pairs as an extender line or be integrated into matrix installations. The new devices are fully compatible with existing models, making it easier for technology professionals to plan and expand installations, even at a later date.

In a first step, a high-end system for DisplayPort UHR with a transmission bandwidth of 10G will be launched, followed by devices for HDMI and DVI. For the VisionXS series, the manufacturer also relies on its lossless compression High Dynamic Image Processing, which enables accurate video experiences. In addition, dual-head modules allow the transmission of two video signals via one transmission cable. These modules offer significant advantages: Two video signals transmitted over one line saves 50 percent of cabling or KVM modules.

The new VisionXS-IP-DP-UHR system is compatible with the central ControlCenter-IP appliance. Combined, these units form a matrix for KVM over IP. This means that each connected workstation can be granted access to any computer connected to the KVM system. While the network infrastructure takes over the transport of KVM over IP using network switches and routers, the ControlCenter-IP contributes the logic. Both the dynamic access and the use of KVM over IP make the application even more flexible. Secure and reliable operation is ensured by AES-128 encryption and the regular exchange of security keys. 

The console modules of the VisionXS series are now significantly smaller and thus require less space. In addition, the manufacturer now also provides new and efficient mounting options that require fewer screws. For the new VisionXS modules, G&D relies on a new click mechanism making it much easier to install the devices. 

The Bottom Line: VisionXS KVMs is designed to extend fast videos and frequently changing image content with significantly less compression than previous models, and its compact size makes it well suited for applications where space is a critical factor.

As every business owner knows, time is money. Needlessly inefficient tasks hurt the bottom line. Scenario switching allows you to set up multiple scripts that completely reconfigure the system in seconds. G&D offers endpoints available with DP1.1, DP1.2, DVI, and DL-DVI video signals. The system also supports bi-directional stereo audio, PS/2, and USB 2.0 devices and is completely RS-232 transparent for control. But the true power of the system lies in the ControlCenter-IP software, which includes the basic administration with extensive user and rights management. It has many helpful and popular control room features such as monitoring, scenario switching, and push-get for optimal cooperation and incorporation of video walls to cross-display switching. 

Cross-display switching and push-get are features deserving of special note, as it would be quite difficult to achieve either without KVM over IP. These powerful and flexible features allow you to set up a multimonitor station and have each display be a different computer while allowing your keyboard and mouse to control them all, simply by dragging the cursor into the window you need, just like a normal desktop with multiple displays. This creates a fast, powerful, and intuitive way to control multiple computers simultaneously. Similarly, the push-get feature allows a user to either push a video feed to a user’s screen or get a video feed from one, making collaboration quick and simple. 

G&D did not cut corners on security, either. The system forms what is known as a trusted computing platform to help guard against third-party intrusion. Each device has on it a Trusted Platform Module with an RSA encryption length of 2048 bits. This allows rapid response to security threats and high-level data protection. The ControlCenter-IP system can also be configured to be redundant for maximum uptime. 

In short, this system is essential for network administrators with computer systems spread over a wide area. The expenses saved in travel more than justify the cost of upgrading to this system. Clunky solutions like remote desktop—which can introduce security concerns and can be difficult to set up and use—do not compare.

The What: IHSE has launched its Draco tera flex series of matrix switches, designed to deliver increased performance with enhanced flexibility, modularity, scalability, and functionality. 

The What Else: The Draco tera flex family incorporates features from the Draco tera enterprise series of switches, including SNMPv3, LDAPS, multilingual on-screen display, encrypted communication for maximum security (for API, Draco tera configuration tool and Matrix Grid), and fast booting. Draco tera flex devices can now be interconnected in a decentralized matrix system using matrix grid technology.

The Draco tera flex is available in three housing variants (1, 2, and 4U) with between 16 and 160 ports. All ports can be used flexibly as inputs or outputs. Eight-port expansion modules can be mixed between category and fiber optic types, with either 1Gb or 3Gb bandwidth; thus almost all customer-specific requirements can be achieved. The Draco tera flex is equipped with integrated power supply and redundant network connection as standard.

The new Draco tera flex matrix switch series offers a higher number of ports and performance at almost the same cost and replaces the existing Draco tera compact range; however, the eight-port compact switch will still be available as an entry-level variant for smaller KVM installations.

The Bottom Line: The modular structure permits simple interchange of individual components and prepares for future expansion. The Draco tera flex series is fully compatible with all Draco extenders and Draco tera KVM switches. It is well suited for cost-effective expansion of an existing Draco tera enterprise system or as an upgrade to existing Draco tera compact installations.

Freely-configurable 24- and 40-port models housed in 1U 19-inch racks will be available from the end of November 2020. Larger models in 2U and 4U racks with up to 160 ports will follow at the end of the year.

The What: Black Box has introduced the KVD200-2H 4K HDMI dual-head desktop KVM switch, a KVM switch designed for professional users who need to control two computers, such as a desktop and a laptop computer, with a single keyboard and mouse.

The What Else: The KVD200-2H KVM switch supports speaker and microphone audio and features two USB 2.0 ports, two USB 3.1 Gen. 1 ports, and one USB Type-C 3.1 port to support high-speed peripherals such as storage devices, flash drives, and cameras. Keyboard/mouse emulation ensures compatibility with complex HID devices. Equipped with HDCP 2.2 support, the new Black Box switch also enables users to stream 4K video from online streaming platforms over the computer.

Black Box will release three copper and three fiber KVX Series extender kits to provide support for DVI, 4K HDMI, and 4K DisplayPort connections. DVI KVX models support 1920x1200 at 60Hz video and legacy VGA interfaces via an adapter. DisplayPort KVX models support up to 3840x2160 at 30Hz UHD video. The company will also introduce a new dual-head KVM extender that includes DisplayPort/HDMI mixed inputs to support dual HDMI displays at 3840x2160 60Hz UHD video. EDID emulation supports different resolutions and eliminates display compatibility issues.

While the copper kits (KVXLC-200, KVXLCH-200, KVXLCHDP-200) enable remote computer access up to 330 feet (100m), the fiber kits (KVXLCF-200, KVXLCHF-200, KVXLCHDPF-100) facilitate remote computer access up to 18.6 miles (30km) using SFP modules. Along with extension of USB 2.0, analog stereo audio (speakers and microphones) and serial signals, all six extender kits feature two additional video ports on the transmitter to enable monitoring of the computer in a data center or equipment room. PC connection cables are included in each KVX Series extender kit.

When Berlin Brandenburg Airport opens at the end of October 2020, it will become one of the largest airports in Germany, with around 350,000 planned aircraft movements per year on two parallel runways. Not far from the main terminal, the control tower of DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung (German Air Traffic Control) rises into the sky. All take-offs and landings will be controlled and monitored from here. Guntermann & Drunck (G&D) has announced ControlCenter-Xperience, a new showroom to present the company’s latest KVM solutions. Starting October 1, visitors will be able to tour the facility to see how KVM systems interact with different applications in a control room environment. Guests will also get a live demonstration of how G&D's KVM systems and their control options can be optimally integrated into an installation.

In the ControlCenter-Xperience, G&D will present their equipment on site, but also remotely via live video. The What: IHSE has announced the launch of the DisplayPort Dual-Head KVM extender with a range of models in the Draco vario series. The new extender enables video transmission of two DisplayPort including keyboard and mouse signals over a single duplex fiber optic cable or a Cat-X cable and includes keyboard and mouse control. 

The What Else: The DPDH extender enables resolutions of up to 1920x1200 pixels at 60 frames per second in dual-head mode with clean image visualization in 24-bit color depth (true color) and optimal 4:4:4 color space. Single-head transmission at 4K30 is also possible. The module supports embedded digital audio transmission via the DisplayPort interface to suit monitors with integrated loudspeakers without additional audio modules or cables. In addition, Draco vario add-on modules for other interfaces such as USB 2.0, analog audio, and RS-232 can be integrated and transmitted via the same datastream.

The DisplayPort 1.1 Dual-Head (DPDH) extender is well suited for separating a dual-head workplace from its associated computer. Users are able to access and operate a remote computer in real time using their workplaces’ keyboard, mouse and monitors.

Locating source computers in an environmentally controlled server room protects them from unauthorized access and adverse environmental influences including dust, moisture, and heat. It also frees working environments from computers that take up space and emit heat and fan noise.

The device is compatible with other extenders and additional modules within the respective series. It is suitable for point-to-point operation and compatible with Draco tera KVM matrix switches. It can be installed in all Draco vario chassis.

The dual-head extender is available in versions for the Draco vario and Draco vario ultra series, each as Cat-X or 1G and 3G fiber versions. All variants support option redundant data transmission (link redundancy) for maximum reliability.

The Bottom Line: The DPDH replaces IHSE’s DVI dual-head series 482 and 492, and its video interface DisplayPort includes audio transmission. The solution is designed to reduce the complexity of an installation and save cost, space, cabling, and reduce the need for matrix ports in a KVM matrix switch installation.

Everywhere you look, audiovisual technologies are migrating to IP networks for a number of reasons, including the ease of scalability and the convenience of remote access. But, the process has been relatively slow as engineers work to clear hurdles of latency, quality, and security. 

For KVM solutions, these three drawbacks are a non-starter. Often found in mission-critical command and control environments, KVM-over-IP solutions need to be agile enough to enable fluid mouse movements, with high enough resolution to see With important details, and robust enough to meet standards of security and reliability.

ATEN KE9950

ATEN’s KE9950 4K DisplayPort Single Display KVM over IP Extender provides video resolutions up to 3840x2160 at 30Hz (4:4:4) as well as lossless video compression quality with minimal latency. The solution consists of a 0U rack-mountable high-performance IP-based transmitter (KE9950T) that connects to the computer and receiver (KE9950R), providing console access from a separate location. The KE9950 allows 24/7 access to a computer system from a remote USB console over an intranet, enabling users to locate computers in a secure and temperature-controlled environment, which is isolated from users’ workstation. For added security, the extender supports AES encryption for secured data transmissions, while RADIUS, LDAP, AD, or remote user authentication provides an added layer of connection security. Crestron DM-NVX-D80-IOAV

The Crestron DM-NVX-D80-IOAV is a compact AV-over-IP decoder that functions as a receiver. The DM NVX D80 is compatible with the Intel Open Pluggable Specification (OPS) for seamless integration with OPS-supported displays. DM NVX technology supports the extension of USB signals, which can be switched and routed alongside the AV signal or separately via a control system. The OPS port of the DM-NVX-D80-IOAV includes USB 2.0 host port functionality, enabling the DM-NVX-D80-IOAV to function as a remote extender. The OPS port receives a USB signal from a KVM (keyboard, video, and mouse) device or other type of USB peripheral device. The USB signal is transported over the network to the USB 2.0 device port of a DM NVX device, which functions as the local extender and sends the USB signal to a USB host device (for example, a computer). 

Datapath Arqa

With near-zero latency and visually lossless video transmission, Datapath Arqa brings numerous benefits to end users. The Arqa KVM system utilizes an optimized video-over-IP transport technology that greatly reduces latency and provides instant control. Rigorous testing reveals no difference between operating a PC via Arqa, or having the connection direct to a local desktop. G&D ControlCenter-IP

The ControlCenter-IP combines the advantages of classic matrices with the flexibility of IP systems. Any connected operator station can be granted access to any remote computer. While the network infrastructure takes over the transport of KVM-over-IP using network switches and routers, the ControlCenter-IP contributes the logic. Transmission takes place compressed via category cabling or optical fibres via standard IP-based networks, with a data transmission rate of 1Gbps per line. This enables existing IT installations to be scaled more easily, flexibly, and cost-effectively. The ControlCenter-IP system provides high-quality images and uses the in-house compression technology HDIP. This compression mode allows the lossless transmission of video signals with a resolution of up to 4K at 60Hz. In combination with IP extender systems for DP1.2a and DP1.1a as well as single- and dual-link DVI, it supports a wide range of video signals and resolutions up to 4K over IP. With the ControlCenter-IP, users can integrate generic USB devices and high-speed USB 2.0 into KVM-over-IP installations. IHSE SIRA

Last year IHSE introduced a virtual KVM solution enabling virtual servers to co-exist as part of an existing Draco tera KVM switch system, creating a streamlined multitasking virtual environment where multiple operating systems and applications could be accessed directly from a physical KVM console. This year, IHSE has expanded those network capabilities by introducing the Secure IP Remote Access (SIRA) line of IP KVM solutions. SIRA includes a host of gateway and remote access products that create hybrid KVM solutions. tvONE Magenta Pathfinder

The What: Hall Research has launched the UH18, which extends HDMI video, USB, IR, and RS-232 on a single Cat-6 cable to over 100 meters. 

The What Else: The UH18 employs proven HDBaseT 2.0 technology to achieve low latency and high accuracy. The UH18 allows users to access and control PCs from a distance as well as locally at the PC. The system is OS independent and no software drivers are needed. The remote user location shows the same PC screen and users can connect keyboard, mouse, or touchscreen to the UH18 Receiver to access the PC.

The UH18 supports 18Gbps video bandwidth and resolutions up to and including 4K60 4:4:4 (UHD).

The Bottom Line: In a typical application, the PC is placed in a secure location away from the remote user console. The Sender provides local HDMI loop output as well as a USB hub for easy local access to the PC. Power, USB, RS-232, and IR (remote) signals are extended on the same Cat-6 cable. The power supply can be connected at either end of the extender.

The Berlin Brandenburg Airport in Germany’s capital is on pace to open this fall, bringing a new transit hub to one of Europe’s largest cities. With a projected annual passenger flow of 34 million, it would become the third-busiest airport in Germany. Integrated 1GbE ports enable delivery of 4K60 video over ubiquitous 1Gbps copper links using 100m of standard Cat-5e or Cat-6 cable, while dual multigigabit or 1GbE ports can be teamed together for enhanced resiliency or improved video capability.

IHSE USA’s Draco tera 16-port matrix switch is a core element in a newly upgraded, state-of-the-art broadcast facility for NHSTV, a Texas-based television station run entirely by high school students and funded by the Northwest Independent School District (NWISD). By allowing the students and their instructor to control multiple computers from one or more keyboards, video monitors, and mice, the Draco tera switch brings greater flexibility and new efficiencies to the NHSTV broadcast operation. 

Station NHSTV is part of the school district’s Creative Media Production (CMP) academy, giving students an immersive experience and complete introduction to the world of professional broadcasting. In its 10th year at Northwest High School in suburban Fort Worth, the CMP academy focuses on television broadcast, filmmaking, graphic design and illustration, and commercial photography.

“With NHSTV, we’re giving students tangible, real-world experience that will give them an advantage for internships, acceptance to college programs, and employment in any facility involved in audio and video production,” said Jeremy Rawe, coordinator of the CMP program. “The IHSE Draco tera switch has helped us bring our facility into the 21st century and give our students a more realistic work environment—one where they can use the equipment they’re likely to encounter in a real control room and a professional TV studio.” 

NWISD worked with technology reseller Digital Resources to upgrade the NHSTV broadcast facility, which had been operating for more than a decade with a very basic technology configuration. The new installation quadruples the size of the control room and includes an all-Ross Video production environment including Ross routing switcher, playout server, graphics engine, and terminal gear. The 16-port Draco tera KVM (keyboard-video-mouse) switch ties together every workstation and a separate rack room, giving the NHSTV crew the flexibility to manage all seven workstations from six different user locations in the studio.

“Our student producers can pop right into the KVM system directly from their own computers and make changes or perform tasks without having to get up and walk over to the dedicated workstation. Fewer people moving around in the control room isn’t just a time saver, it also makes things safer and less chaotic when we’re in the midst of a live production,” Rawe said. “Also, if a situation arises with a server or technical function, I can take instant control of any student’s workstation right from my own desktop, and without having to leave my office. This helps me ensure the broadcasts are 100 percent student-run, while still allowing me to provide unobtrusive guidance and support.”

The What: VuWall has released an update to its TRx Centralized Multi-Video Wall Management System, version 2.5. This release includes three new security capabilities that strengthen the VuWall system: Transport Layer Security (TLS) between the TRx GUI and TRx Server, improved user rights management, and more KVM modes.  

The What Else: VuWall’s TRx Version 2.5 adds TLS between TRx GUI and TRx Server. By using TLS and HTTPS, VuWall ensures that all the communication between the VuWall server and all TRx clients is encrypted to protect against man-in-the-middle attacks, such as eavesdropping, and prevent hackers from accessing communication and manipulating the system. This feature is configurable, allowing users to provide their own encryption keys and distribute them only to clients they trust.

In addition, updated user rights management allows administrators to more finely tune permissions. Users and groups can be restricted by floor, zone, or endpoint (source/display), and whether that user/group can join with video, audio, or USB keyboard/mouse. Users can also be restricted against saving new presets, creating new control panels, writing scripts, and more. Permissions are even available to allow users/groups to create, but not delete resources, or rename them. These tools allow for control over access to parts of the system and AV network. 

The new release also includes a private mode. In a KVM environment, private mode secures content on the network by assigning absolute privacy. As a result, only the source owner, whether a presenter or a control room operator, can authorize where the content is displayed, for complete control of any source. Private mode locks a source to a given user once displayed; prevents other users from routing that source elsewhere or removing it from the display it has been joined to; and notifies and allows users to accept or deny requests to take over private joins from other users. 

“Security and privacy are paramount to mission-critical environments and their systems,” said Paul Vander Plaetse, CEO of VuWall. “As cyberattacks become more common, it’s becoming exceedingly important to guard against arising risks. We’ve taken action by adding new capabilities that protect communications between the TRx Server and TRx Clients.”

KVM Consoles are a standard fixture in data centers, and even in single equipment racks tucked away in utility closets—the one-rack-unit device saves a couple of feet of space that might otherwise be consumed by a standard monitor, keyboard, and mouse sitting on top of one of the servers in the rack. It might seem at first that there’s no reason to upgrade existing consoles, or add one to a rack that has enough space for a cheap monitor and keyboard, but there are several.

Existing consoles are often limited to older monitor specifications—not only lower maximum resolutions like 1280x1024 or 1360x768, but outdated VGA-only video ports, and PS/2 style keyboard and mouse connections rather than the newer USB standard. Newer servers usually have HDMI or DVI monitor connections, and support up to 1920x1080 resolutions, and often make good use of speakers as well.

The ATEN CL3800 is a KVM console. It has two sets of ports, one that connects to a server or KVM switch, and one for output, to allow for another console or remote connection. Each connection supports VGA, DVI, and HDMI video, has dual USB ports for keyboard and mouse, and an audio port for sound.

The CL3800 is a monitor, keyboard, and mouse console, with no integrated KVM switch, although ATEN has other models that include a switch as well. If admins already have a separate KVM switch, this provides a lower-cost option. The console offers a dual-rail system that provides maximum flexibility—the monitor can slide into the chassis along with the keyboard, providing a clean appearance, or the monitor can be deployed in front of the chassis, allowing the admin to see what’s going on with the server while the keyboard is still in the chassis, allowing the door to the server rack to close with the monitor still available. The keyboard includes a trackpad, which is simpler to use in a small space than a separate mouse, although the USB accessory port allows for a separate mouse for those who have problems with trackpads, or the port can be used to connect other USB accessories such as a CD-ROM, DVD, or Blu-Ray drive. The audio port allows for speakers as well.

A short overall depth means that the system can be mounted in compact cabinets or vans and other mobile units. For applications with limited lighting inside the cabinet, an integrated light provides illumination of the keyboard, especially useful when the screen is mostly dark, such as when a server is booting or in command console mode.

The 18.5-inch monitor is a full 1080p or 1920x1080 resolution and can up-convert lower resolutions to provide optimum viewing. It includes standard adjustments, horizontal and vertical positioning, sync, and so forth. The CL3800 requires a standard 110-volt power connection.

Another benefit for end users is Datapath’s One Control technology, which lets operators seamlessly switch between up to 16 independent sources as if they were one desktop with no button presses required to switch.
