Let's Get Comfortable

What makes the OpenMeet UC different is that it more closely resembles a traditional headset, with a headband that rests on top of your head. According to Shokz, it features TitaniumFlex technology, a five-point design with flexible titanium plates. As a result, the headpiece is incredibly bendy and adjustable, so it should accommodate any head short of a Klingon noggin that attempts to use it. That said, unlike other Shokz models, this headset is definitely not for use during exercise.

So, what's in the box? Besides the headset and some product/warranty info, Shokz provides two extra sets of pressure relief cushions, plus a storage case, USB wireless adapter for your computer, and USB-C cable. Yes, the larger headset means more real estate, so Shokz has replaced its proprietary charging port with the far more universal USB-C option.

The pressure relief cushions cover the parts of the headset that sit in your hairline close to your temples. You have three choices of thickness; the cushions are attached via Velcro, so you can easily test them to find the fit that's right for you. Honestly, I didn't feel much difference, so I settled on medium.

Let's take a moment and discuss the case. It almost feels like a fuzzy piece of hard-sided luggage, and a zipper pull tab makes it easy to open. There is a separate and secure home for the USB-C wireless adapter, plus a Velcro strap that holds your USB-C charging cable in place. The headset itself sits criss-cross in place, with an indented area that provides a little extra protection for the power button. Smart design.

Reasons to Upgrade

No matter your affinity for luggage, you're not buying the OpenMeet UC for its case, so why should workers make the jump from the OpenComm product line to the OpenMeet form factor? There are a few compelling arguments. First, it provides the more professional "look" of a headset without being too bulky. Like other Shokz offerings, it's very lightweight, so it's not a burden to wear this headset for hours at a time. That's important, because lack of comfort is (forgive me) a pain point among headset users.

Another useful feature is the LED indicator light above the mic boom arm, which essentially serves as a mini "do not disturb" sign. The light does not turn on when you're streaming video or listening to music, but it turns red when you're on a call or videoconference. It also provides other information, such as an incoming call (flashing green) or low battery (flashing red).

Third, and arguably most important, is the sound. The OpenMeet UC provides a dramatic improvement over the wraparound models I've tested. The fuller aural experience is likely the result of significantly improved bass (and I'm guessing that's why the new headset's earpieces are larger and heavier).

That's not to say the other products sound bad, but the biggest knock on bone conduction headsets has been weak bass performance. You're not going to replace your favorite over-the-ear headphones with the OpenMeet UC for critical listening in post, but it will deliver very satisfying audio in the office.

The other criticism with bone conduction is the vibrating sensation; some people are more sensitive to it than others. But it's been tamped down considerably with the OpenMeet UC at moderate volume, though you can still feel the sensation if you decide to play your music loudly.

Other Considerations

The OpenMeet UC's USB wireless adapter is designed to deliver improved stability over a simple Bluetooth connection. Being the unreasonable reviewer that I am, I decided to test this to the extreme. I queued up "She's So Young" from The Pursuit of Happiness on YouTube and took a walk around the inside of my house. Then, I walked to the mailbox and kept going.

I didn't experience an audio dropout until I was across the street and one house over. For comparison, I tried the same experiment with my OpenComm UC headset from 2023 and barely made it to the property line before the dropouts started. Both headsets are rated for 98 feet, but clearly Shokz has made some improvements. The Bluetooth connection to my iPhone delivered similar results.

The OpenMeet UC will also help you sound great. I tried it on both cell phone calls and videoconferences, and the general consensus was that I sounded crystal clear. Though it cannot be rotated for use on the left side of your face, the boom mic offers more than 130 degrees of positioning. The headset mic is equipped with Qualcomm's cVc noise reduction algorithm, but it's not perfect. When I crinkled paper near or somewhat near the mic, it was loud and clear on phone calls. Wind was also a problem when I walked outside while on a call.

Some conferencing platforms like Google Meet have their own noise-cancellation technology, which can be a big help. Of course, there's also a built-in mute/unmute button on the mic arm, so it's easy enough to silence your side of the conversation if you're in a disruptive environment.

You don't absolutely need it, but the free Shokz app (available for Android and iOS) adds additional functionality. Arguably the most significant feature is the EQ. You can choose between standard and vocal—I preferred the enhanced mids of the vocal setting—but you can also upgrade firmware, adjust notifications, and personalize other settings.

Priced at around $250 ($220 without the USB wireless adapter), is the OpenMeet UC right for you? It really depends on your workspace. If you're in a loud office, the headset won't block out unwanted noise. However, if you constantly find yourself removing your headset to interact with those around you or feel more connected to your surroundings, this could be a godsend. Plus, the OpenMeet UC delivers the performance you need for all-day use, with battery life to spare (up to 14 hours of talk time), intuitive controls, lightweight comfort, and the best bone conduction audio I've experienced to date.

H570e (Teams version) features a lightweight design and plastic parts that include a minimum of 45% post-consumer recycled plastic. The PunQtum Q915 is a one-ear headset and the PunQtum Q925 is its dual-ear counterpart. Both headsets come with a four-pin XLR connector cable. PunQtum’s previous Q910 and Q920 headsets have now been discontinued with only a few items left in stock. 

Logitech recently introduced Zone Wireless 2, a business headset that uses AI to deliver unique two-way noise-free calling experiences. AI far-end noise suppression, noise-canceling mics, hybrid Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), and personalized stereo sound help business professionals hear and be heard clearly in calls and meetings, especially in noisy environments.

Last year, Shokz invited me to review its OpenComm UC bone conduction stereo Bluetooth headset. I thought it was a truly excellent alternative to traditional headphones and earbuds. I used it for professional phone calls and videoconferences, and even wore them during outdoor exercise and household chores. When Shokz provided the new OpenComm2 UC model, I was curious to see if the new headset could measure up—or even exceed—the original.

Remember, bone conduction headsets use vibration through the bones in your skull to transmit sound. As a result, the OpenComm2 UC doesn’t need to put anything in or on your ears to deliver sound vibrations to your inner ear. This makes the headset a smart choice if you want to remain aware of your surroundings, not so good if you work in a noisy, distraction-filled office.

Also, “vibration” is an important word here, as the headset can create a slight vibrating sensation above your cheeks, depending on the content and volume of your audio source. It doesn’t bother me at all, but some people may find it distracting or uncomfortable.

Aesthetically, the OpenComm2 UC has two major changes. Most noticeable is that the thin microphone boom arm has been moved from the left side of the headset to the right. With this change, Shokz has added a dedicated mute button on top of the microphone, a feature that was sorely missed in the first iteration. (The original OpenComm UC required a clunky, two-button press behind your right ear.)

Turn on the headset and you’ll hear a welcome as well as a connection notice. Pairing the headset with my PC via the USB-A adapter was automatic; it took less time than it took for me to type this sentence. Bluetooth pairing with my iPhone was also uncomplicated.

Multipoint pairing on the OpenComm2 UC has been streamlined, so pairing one headset to two devices was not a problem, but switching between the two remains an issue. There is a (very) small multifunction button on the adapter. If you can press it, you should be able to switch between devices. I got frustrated, though, because I wound up in pairing mode more times than not. The easiest solution remains unplugging the adapter to switch between the two—it’s not elegant, but it works.

The headset delivers excellent audio, and my compliments to Shokz for significantly improving the EQ choices. The “standard” mode delivers a balanced sound more suited for music, while the “vocal booster” mode ups the treble for podcasts and audiobooks without completely crushing the rest of the audio. You can definitely hear the difference when listening to tracks like “i like the way” from lovelytheband, so this setting comes down to personal preference.

The carrying case has two improvements. First, it’s a bit thinner than the previous model, which is always appreciated for travel, but still has a protected, form-fitting home for the headset. Second, the dedicated USB adapter slot has been replaced by a more secure small pocket. There’s still a mesh pocket for storing the charging cable.

Speaking of which, I’m rarely a fan of proprietary charging cables. That said, I love that this one is magnetic, so there’s no awkward battle to attach a USB-C cable on such a small, lightweight, and flexible device. On the other hand, lose that cable and you’ll be praying for overnight delivery.

Like the previous model, the multifunction button in front of your left ear, combined with the volume buttons behind your right ear, allow you plenty of functionality. The headset features a noise-cancelling mic, and I was told I sounded great by folks on the other end of phone and videoconferencing conversations. The OpenComm2 UC is also certified for Zoom, another improvement from the original.

Priced at $199 on the Shokz website, is it the worth the upgrade? For the uninitiated, I’m quick to recommend a test drive, provided your environment is conducive to an open-ear headset solution. The OpenComm2 UC offers excellent performance and is easy to wear for long periods of time. For owners of the original OpenComm UC, a dedicated mute button, improved pairing, and Zoom certification will make an upgrade very tempting.

As someone who has used more than his fair share of average and low-end headsets, it was nice to have the opportunity to test the Jabra Evolve2 65 Flex. This is a high-performance headset that is built for long days and noisy offices.

The left earcup includes the power button, which doubles as the Bluetooth pairing control, plus a USB-C port for charging, and a button for selecting hybrid active noise cancellation (ANC) or HearThrough (ambient noise) modes. The right earcup houses the volume and play/pause controls, as well as the microphone boom arm and dedicated buttons for voice assistants and Microsoft Teams control. Both earcups have LED lights to indicate the status of various activities, and they glow red when you are on a call, which (hopefully) deters your fellow workers from disturbing you.

Software Assistance

My test unit also included a USB connector cable (USB-C for the headset, USB-A for your laptop) and wireless charging pad. While this does take up real estate on your workspace, at least you have a designated place for your headset. The headset sits on the left earpiece in some sort of gymnastic pose on the charging pad. A green LED on the pad will indicate when you’ve positioned it properly for charging, and when the LED light on the headset turns solid green, your headset is fully charged.

The free Jabra Direct software provides a platform for changing several settings for a more personalized performance. It also provides access to a five-band EQ, which gives you some control over the overall tone of your music, but it can also cause noticeable distortion if you set the treble too high. Probably best to keep the presets in place until Jabra can provide a software update.

I preferred Jabra Sound+, an app that you can download for your phone and offers some nice features. For one thing, the EQ in this app did not cause distortion. I was very pleasantly surprised with the “Soundscape” option, which offers a variety of background noises—from white noise to a babbling brook—to mask your environment. There’s even MySound, which provides a short hearing evaluation that can help tailor your audio experience based on your hearing.

The Evolve2 65 Flex also ships with a slender carrying pouch, complete with a small pocket for the USB dongle you’ll need for pairing with your laptop. You can fold the headphones until they are relatively flat for easy storage.

A major selling point for the Evolve2 65 Flex is comfort. It is honestly one of the most comfortable headsets I’ve ever worn. Between its lightweight design (less than 5 ounces) and what the company is calling Jabra AirComfort Fit, it’s easy to wear this headset for long periods of time.

Now Hear This

I tested the Jabra headset on phone calls and videoconferences, with no audio complaints from either side of the conversation. Incoming calls sounded crisp and clear. Bonus points for Jabra ClearVoice technology: I turned on some music for one call, but the microphone did a great job filtering the background noise. One feature I appreciated was the ability to mute the mic by moving the boom arm up (and unmute when you pull it back down). You can also flip the boom arm down to answer a call.

The Evolve2 65 Flex has very good sound reproduction for conversations and music. The headset had no problem maintaining its Bluetooth connection to my phone within 100 feet, but connectivity distance was significantly less when using the Bluetooth adapter connected to my Microsoft Surface.

Above everything else, what really sold me on the Evolve2 65 Flex was its ANC technology. As a native Floridian, I know the importance of planning for hurricane season. So, I decided to put the on-ear headset, which does not feature closed-back headphones, to the ultimate test: Play “Maybe Later,” a delicate ballad from Lowen and Navarro, while testing my portable generator.

You’ll be happy to know my generator started with the first tug of the pull cord. What’s more impressive is that I could clearly hear the music, delivered wirelessly from my iPhone via Bluetooth, while standing over said generator. With the ANC enabled, the very loud engine registered more like a dull hum. The performance was truly impressive.

Update: Since publishing this review, I had to take a flight to New York for our AV/IT Summit, which was an opportunity for one final test. I left my "flying" headphones—a pair of sweet JBL over-the-ear headphones with ANC—at home and opted for the Evolve2 65 Flex. The Jabra headset definitely earned its wings blocking out unwanted engine noise.

The Evolve2 65 Flex is not an inexpensive headset. In fact, at $329, it’s one of the pricier choices on Jabra’s website. But it’s a great solution for tech support personnel in a busy office or travelling team members trying to stay focused between flights. The microphone helps you sound your best, even in noisy environments, and the headset itself is truly comfortable to wear. Add the features of the Jabra Sound+ app, long battery life, and amazing ANC performance, and it’s not hard to justify the extra cost.

During my podcasting days, the Audio-Technica AT2020 USB microphone was one of my go-to choices. So, earlier this year, when the company introduced its ATH-M50xSTS StreamSet headsets, which were specifically designed for streaming production and incorporate technology from its 20 Series mics, I was excited to give them a try.

Audio-Technica sent me the USB version of the StreamSet to review. It has an integrated, 6.5-foot cord with a USB-A plug and ships with a USB-C adapter, so you have connectivity options. Another version, the ATH-M50xSTS, offers analog connectivity with an XLR mic output and 1/4-inch headphone input (with 1/8-inch adapter).

[Hear, Hear: The Evolution of Podcasting]

As the name strongly suggests, the headphones use the same technology as Audio-Technica’s ATH-M50x monitor headphones, which include a 45mm driver with a 15-28,000Hz frequency response. With a cardioid pickup pattern, the condenser microphone offers a 50-20,000Hz frequency response (at 3 cm), and supports 44.1, 48, 88.2, and 96kHz sampling rates as well as 16 or 24-bit depth.

The StreamSet performed as a true plug-and-play device on my Windows-based laptops. From the padded headband to the mic’s flexible boom arm, the build quality is excellent. That’s important, because we all know that boom arm is going to be twisted, adjusted, and manhandled with reckless abandon by every person who dons the headset.

I’m a sucker for smart features, and the StreamSet has two that impressed me, as well as a nice bonus. First, I like to hear my own voice in my headset during production. This is for quality control, not my ego. However, there are some people out there who simply don’t want to hear themselves during production. A monitor dial on the back of the left earcup allows you to turn monitoring of your voice on or off. Plus, the StreamSet takes it a step further, allowing you to adjust the volume of your voice in the headset.

Second, no cough button? No problem. Flip the StreamSet’s boom arm all the way up and your mic is muted. You will likely hear the rustling of the mic during recording, but that’s probably better than the alternative. Also, if you’re wearing glasses, be aware of your mic placement before you attempt to mute.

The bonus is that Audio-Technica ships the headset with two sets of earpads. One pair is designed for breathability and comfort, with mesh fabric touching your ears. The other set, made of the same synthetic leather found on some car seats, is designed for high fidelity and isolation. They felt like leather to me, and the leatherette earpads did a better job blocking out exterior sounds, but the mesh earpads were more comfortable. Dealer’s choice on that one—but you have a choice, which is nice.

During my testing, audio was clear with minimal “pops.” Just be careful when you take a deep breath or smack your lips because the microphone will pick it up. Also, this is not a discreet headset, so while it sounds great, it may not be your best choice visually for on-camera work.

Priced at around $229 ($199 for the analog version), I’ll grant you the StreamSet might be a hard sell for K-12 production bids. However, for corporate podcasts where an elaborate studio setup is simply impractical, the StreamSet will go a long way toward producing professional results. This is also a smart solution for a house-of-worship audio podcast.

OK, so you can’t “flip” the headset and use the microphone on your right side; the cable and monitor dial are in the way. And I would have probably placed the shiny “L” and “R” indicators only on the back, not in camera view on the front. As far as criticisms go, that’s about it. The ATH-M50xSTS-USB offers a solid build, useful features, very clear audio monitoring, and an excellent microphone for the spoken word.

Known for crafting flawless audio for musicals such as Bat Out Of Hell, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Beauty and the Beast, and Sister Act, sound designer Gareth Owen recently worked his magic on the Broadway hit, “& Juliet.” As a completely self-taught audio designer, Owen has always aspired to incorporate only the best techniques and high-end equipment into his workflow. Now a seasoned professional with countless musical credits and awards, Owen’s work on “& Juliet” recently earned a 2023 Tony Award nomination for Best Sound Design of a Musical. A long-time user of DPA, Owen regularly turns to the brand’s 4066 CORE Headset Mics for cast members. “I think I probably use 4066s in one format or another on pretty much every show I do,” he explained. “Even if the show isn’t using boom mics on the side of the face, I can still get the 4066 down the forehead without having to put ugly tape on the face. When it came time to consider mics for the drum kit, Owen found himself testing out DPA’s new 4055 Kick Drum Mic. “This is the first time in a long time that I’m using a different kick drum mic, but it has turned out to be a very nice departure from my usual choice: I’m very much enjoying it,” he said. “What I’m finding about the 4055 is that unlike many kick drum mics, it’s not designed to sound very specific. DPA is known for its transparency and, at first, I was concerned about it working for multiple genres, but I found that I was able to EQ the 4055 quite easily. I could make it sound like the public perception of a pop kick drum while also making it sound like a classical music kick drum.” 

According to Owen, the unique, genre-defying EQ capabilities of the 4055 are unlike anything he has ever seen. “In the past, when I’ve had different music styles for the same instruments, I’ve had to use multiple mics, with each set to sound a particular way,” he explained. “I don’t have to do any of that with the DPA 4055. That was very eye-opening for me; it wasn’t something that I expected. My original worries ended up not being a concern at all.”

Beyond the 4055, Owen also outfitted the ride cymbals and hi-hats with DPA’s 4015 Wide Cardioid microphones, which he notes work really well individually and when paired with the 4055. “One of the things that DPA is very good at is off-axis rejection,” he explained. “That, combined with the very small size of the microphones and the ability to separate the capsule from the preamp, means you’re able to get the DPAs into very tight positions―particularly in percussion rigs. Many times, percussion setups in theatres can be very tight because you have a lot of gear packed into a very small room. The fact that you can get a microphone into a very tight position and have great off-axis rejection is extremely useful. It lets you focus on what it is you need without picking up too much of the audio around it.”

Owen also consistently relies on DPA’s 4099 Instrument Mics, which he utilized on this show for the strings section. “The 4099 is just a really fabulous mic,” he said. “Since the day it was released, I don’t think I’ve ever used anything else on strings. I use 4099s for everything, just with different clips because it’s such a versatile mic. Sometimes I think that you could almost do anything with a 4099. They’re a great investment, too. You know you’re going to get a great life out of one of these mics. I am often quite amazed at their durability and at how well they survive getting thrown on the floor in the orchestra pit.”

For the rest of the orchestra, Owen selected DPA’s 4011 Cardioids for the brass and reed instruments. A d&b XLS line array PA system, Avid mixing desk and Shure radio mics also keep the show running smoothly behind the scenes.

After wrapping sound design for “& Juliet,” Owen got right to work on Broadway’s “Bad Cinderella,” where he continues to rely on DPA for the brand’s authentic audio and space-saving solutions. “With the exception of a few drums and the French horn, almost all the microphones are DPA,” he said. “The 4099s are on all of the strings, including double bass, cello and acoustic guitar. The cast has 4066s, plus there are DPAs on the guitars and keyboards, and 4011s on the reeds and brass. For the drum kit, we have 4015s on cymbals and hi-hats and 4018s on snare bottom. These pencil mics are what first attracted me to DPA―they’re small and very easy to position in places that you just can’t get a normal pencil mic. We have a 4015 tucked underneath every single cymbal on the drum kit, and you’d never be able to do that with another brand.” 

With such a long history working with the brand, Owen anticipates DPA staying in his workflow for all future projects. “I started out with DPA 4099 instrument mics for orchestras and the legacy 4022s on reed instruments,” he concluded. “These days, if it’s strings, drum, brass or reeds, they’ve usually got a DPA on them. Considering the durability and transparency, plus that off-axis rejection, there’s just nothing like a DPA.”

Like many of you, I’m always in the market for a good headset. Whether it’s in-ear or over-the-ear, I’ve been using headsets for decades during phone interviews (and videoconferences in more recent years) to keep my hands free to type. So, when Shokz invited me to test its new OpenComm UC headset, which doesn’t put a speaker on or in your ear, I was intrigued. Here’s what I learned.

1) Bone conduction technology is very cool.

I’ve known about bone conduction headsets for a while, but this was my first opportunity to give the technology a real test. The OpenComm UC doesn’t cover your ears or require you to insert anything into them. Instead, the sound is transmitted through vibration via the bones in your skull. (Bone conduction is how we hear our own voices.) Basically, the headset bypasses your eardrum and transmits sound vibrations directly to your inner ear.

With its open-ear design, the OpenComm UC lets you hear your surroundings. As a recreational runner, I know that type of situational awareness is a smart choice for outdoor exercise—and it shouldn’t surprise you to learn that Shokz offers a handful of sport headphones that use the same technology. For home or private office use, bone conduction is an ideal choice because it allows you to hear that knock on your door, among other things, while you are conducting private business on your phone or laptop. It’s also a smart option for installers who need a hands-free phone option on location.

2) It’s light. Really light.

The OpenComm UC weighs 0.07 pounds. The company touts all-day comfort and they are right. I wore these for hours—and while I can’t say I forgot they were on, I got used to the soft silicone exterior in a hurry. The headset loops behind your ears, while contact points (transducers) sit comfortably in front of your ears. The black wraparound frame is almost too flexible; I was able to comfortably place it in position on my head, but I would avoid submitting this $200 professional headset to a Stretch Armstrong stress test.

3) Setup is (mostly) straightforward.

A foldout start guide makes it easy to connect your phone via Bluetooth 5.1. Volume controls reside behind your right ear, with the plus (+) button also used for power and Bluetooth pairing. When listening to audio, pushing both volume buttons together allows you to cycle through two EQ settings, which are not identified by the voice prompt, but can basically be described as “low and tinny” and “loud and full.” A single multifunction button on the right contact point handles answering calls, navigating through song choices, and more.

One quirk of the OpenComm UC is that it has a very singular focus, meaning it is not initially setup to let you easily switch between your computer and portable device. This is not really a hassle unless, like me, you regularly switch your headset use between videoconferencing on your laptop and taking calls on your iPhone. Thankfully, the OpenComm UC includes a multipoint pairing function (though you’ll have to search for the instructions in the separate user guide). Without this, switching between devices involves far too many steps to be practical.

It’s not a perfect solution—setup is a little tricky and there’s still the matter of unplugging the USB adapter every time—but it’s better than the alternative. A button to automatically switch between paired devices would be a welcome addition. Shokz knows this is a pain point, and I was told the company is working on a solution in a future model.

4) Performance is solid.

Permanently mounted on the left side, the microphone boom arm is less than 4 inches long and can be rotated about 270 degrees, so it can sit near your chin or be tucked away near your ear. The arm is also surprisingly slim and not particularly distracting on videoconferences.

As far as my audio quality, the noise-canceling mic performed very well for videoconferences and phone calls. There were no complaints of me sounding like I was down a well or across the room. Also, people in the same room, even standing very close to me, could not hear the other half of my conversations.

I was honestly surprised at the richness of the sound (with the proper EQ setting) from the OpenComm UC. I’m not going to retire my studio headphones, but you are not settling for a low-fidelity option for the sake of wireless convenience. Take a Hike

Bluetooth headsets make meetings more enjoyable by avoiding that pesky wire. However, with most Bluetooth headsets, your range is somewhat limited, hoping to give you anywhere from 75-100 feet max. The Engage 55 essentially boasts audio clarity for more than a football-field-and-a-half, so I put it to the test.

While on a call in my home office, I took a walk—down three short flights of stairs, out through my garage, and all the way up my driveway to the curb to bring in my garbage cans. The call never dropped or lost any quality over roughly 200 feet of walking (yes, I measured). Unless one is an actual football coach, I couldn’t imagine a case where the 490 feet of wireless range comes into play, but it’s nice to know the Engage 55 can go the distance. It also has a long charge for multiple calls throughout the day.

When I used the headphones in my office, outside noise was at a minimum. Not only does the Engage 55 keep distractions out of the headset with a noise cancelling microphone, but it is also DECT Security certified, ensuring you have a peaceful and safe call.

If you are newer to the “I need to wear a headset for every call I make” hybrid world, you can easily customize the way you like to wear the headset. I tested the stereo model with coverage over both ears, but it is also available in a mono style over one ear and a convertible style that comes with an ear hook, neckband, and headband.

Over the past 10 years, broadcaster Marco LaNave has called minor league baseball games in Davenport, Iowa; Jacksonville, Florida; and currently in Akron, Ohio, where he handles the play-by-play duties for the Akron RubberDucks, the Double-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians. With the COVID-19 pandemic increasing the amount of remote workers and learners, a solid pair of headphones is a must-have. And the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones (NCH) 700 UC are an ideal choice for unified communication needs.

Audio

I’ll admit I’ve had my eyes on the Bose NCH 700 UC headphones since InfoComm 2020. I watched a demonstration where one of their employees was in a busy airport (pre-COVID-19, obviously) using the headphones and you could hear all of the hustle and bustle around him. Then, he turned on the noise cancellation feature and the background noise disappeared completely. I was so impressed—and frankly was a bit skeptical—that I emailed their team to verify that the video was authentic. They said it was and I knew right then I had to test these headphones out myself. 

The NCH 700 UC features 11 levels of noise cancellation—from virtually silent like I heard in the airport demo to open and ambient so you can stay aware of your surroundings. We know work from home life isn’t perfect and calls are often interrupted—my dog likes to bark at the most inopportune moments and my neighbors are having construction work done on their units. Using the noise cancellation feature, my co-workers were completely oblivious to the chaos happening in and around my condo. And I could easily hear them as well with the headphone’s active equalization technology that provides rich, immersive audio.

Controls

Touch controls are all the rage in over the ear headphones and that’s what you’ll find with the Bose 700UC Noise Cancelling Headphones. To change the volume, you simply  swipe up and down on the right ear cup; from there, you can also play/pause with a simple tap, or fast-forward/rewind with a swipe forward or backward. You can also double-tap to decline a call or single tap to answer a call.

It’s a very responsive design and I only accidentally hung up on someone once—which is less often than I do with my regular phone so we’ll call that a win.

You can also customize a shortcut for the tap and hold action on the headphones to perform one of two functions: announce the battery level (this is the default setting) or to disable/enable the wake word for Amazon Alexa.

Design

The Bose 700UC Noise Cancelling Headphones arrived in a nondescript brown box, unlike others I’ve received with creative and colorful packaging. Once the box is opened, the headphones are there in a plain black case.  

While the packaging may have been unremarkable, you notice right away that these headphones are sleek and stylish. They're also a comfortable fit—the unit weights slightly under 9 oz. Compared to other, more bulky headphones I’ve been using for conference calls, this lightweight pair is a welcome relief.

The oval-shaped ear pads are quite comfortable; they are well cushioned with a close fit to keep sound contained, while, at the same time, are not too snug. 

The headband is easily adjustable and has a rather wide range. Personally, I sometimes have issues with headphones—even at their smallest setting—being a bit large on my head. But these fit well and also fit people with larger heads.

The battery life/charge time on these headphones could be better. The Bose NCH 700 UC headphones, according to the company, last up to 20 hours and take 2.5 hours for a full charge; I found this to be mostly accurate with regular use. There is also a quick charge feature where a 15-minute charge will give you about 3.5 hours of battery life, although it was slightly less than 3 hours for me.

The UCC Aspect

The Bose NCH 700 UC headphones are designed specifically for conferencing and come with a USB Link Bluetooth to provide a more reliable wireless connection. (Side note: if you own the Bose Headphones 700, you can purchase the dongle separately for $69.95 on the company’s website for a better conference call experience.)

The headphones are certified for use with both Microsoft Teams and Google Meet. I regularly used them on Google Meets, our company’s meeting platform of choice, and had little problems; the only noticeable issue was that my colleagues occasionally said I sounded “tin-y”, but that was quickly resolved when I changed the noise cancellation level.

Another very handy feature: the Bose Headphones 700 UC uses multipoint Bluetooth technology to connect to two devices at the same time so I was able to connect to both my computer and my phone simultaneously. As expected, you can only hear audio or communications from one source at time, but I had no issues toggling between two devices.

Verdict

I spent a few weeks testing out the Bose 700UC Noise Cancelling Headphones. From hour-long Zoom calls to jamming to the latest Taylor Swift album to regular phone calls, these headphones delivered. No matter what the situation, the audio quality was amazing and they’re still comfortable after several hours of wear—these headphones are worth the investment.

The What: EPOS is expanding its range of UC headsets Certified for Microsoft Teams by including its IMPACT MB Pro Series. The series, which was previously certified for Skype for Business, now offers a firmware upgrade to be Certified for Microsoft Teams.

In 2020, in particular, the demand for professional PC USB and UCC headsets has surged to unprecedented levels to enhance software communications experiences. The global professional headset market is expected to reach $2.94 billion by 2026 from $1.41 billion in 2019, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.1 percent. An inline mic provides clear audio for two-way communication between students and teachers. Select Chicago Public Schools on the South, West, and North sides of Chicago have received the earphones to distribute to those who need them.

"Once schools were closed, teachers, staff, and administrators were forced to move toward a new normal by having students and teachers use online learning tools like Google Hangouts,” said Jeffrey Finelli, principal at Edison Park Elementary School. “Shure made a donation specifically for families who were not fortunate enough to have the proper tools to help their child learn effectively at home. It made a world of difference for so many families. Students are now not distracted when they are participating in the live videoconferences and able to communicate with their classmates. This was not possible before Shure made their generous donation."

This is one of several initiatives Shure has embarked on in response to COVID-19 to help people in the communities where the company is based. Shure has donated N95 masks to a Chicago-area hospital; provided support for the Chicago Independent Venue League, a collection of more than 20 music halls and performance venues; and made a corporate donation to Direct Relief, an organization working with authorities to provide personal protective equipment (PPEs) to health care workers in affected regions of the world.

The door opened, and I ducked into the cockpit of an Airbus A350. Easing myself into the pilot’s seat, I studied the minute details in the controls and flight map. I reached for the throttle—but my hand passed through it like an apparition. 

Of course, I wasn’t at the helm of an aircraft, but rather in a hotel room in Midtown Manhattan, trying out what is perhaps the world’s most sophisticated VR/AR headset: the XR-1 Developer Edition from Finland-based Varjo Technologies. With a pixel density so high that Varjo calls it “human eye resolution,” it’s easy to get lost in virtual environments. And while you can tell that you’re looking at a digitized version of reality (a very fine graining of pixels is still perceptible), it doesn’t interfere with the sense of immersion or the ability to critically discern details like small print on virtual displays.

All of what I’ve described so far, however, has been available since the company’s first product, the VR-1, was released early in 2019. Organizations around the world are employing it and its successors, the VR-2 and VR-2 Pro, for a variety of applications, including training for airline pilots.

What makes Varjo’s new XR-1 special is its augmented reality capabilities, which, when paired with the company’s just-launched 2D/3D immersive user interface called Varjo Workspace, open a plethora of opportunities for design-related fields. This “Dimensional Interface” is compatible with a number of Microsoft Windows applications and software tools, and enables designers to switch between real, virtual, and mixed-reality modes and modify their creations while experiencing them in 3D.

In my demonstration, the Varjo team of Urho Konttori, founder and chief product officer and Jussi Mäkinen, chief marketing officer, guided me through a few applications that are possible with the XR-1 and Varjo Workspace. At first, I was just sitting in a digitized version of the hotel room—reality captured through the XR-1’s imaging technology. Then, a giant floating screen appeared in front of the room’s actual TV, and Mäkinen played the trailer for the upcoming Star Wars movie on it, proving how smoothly the system is able to render content, even at such high resolutions. 

Next, Mäkinen—who was operating the PC that was driving my headset with a wireless keyboard and mouse—switched me into a virtual environment, an automotive showroom of one of Varjo’s customers, Volvo. At first, the room was empty except for a blue SUV. Then, he inserted a floating display above the vehicle, essentially a Windows computer screen running CAD software. Using the software, he gradually began adding different pieces of furniture to the room around a blue SUV—demonstrating the ease with which one can design an environment from within that environment. 

With Varjo’s video pass-through-based mixed reality, designers can just as easily implement virtual elements into an existing physical environment, greatly enhancing their creative potential. In fact, the XR-1 is so capable that engineers at Volvo are actually driving prototype vehicles while wearing it, to evaluate interior designs and active safety technologies.

According to Mäkinen and Konttori, the company’s software is compatible with CAD and visualization tools including Autodesk VRED, Unity, and Unreal, so designers can simply upgrade their current workflows into the realm of virtual and augmented reality.

“Varjo Workspace shows how professionals will use and interact with computers in the future,” Konttori said. “Varjo is unique in being the only product maker capable of photorealistic visual fidelity in both VR and XR, with perfect color accuracy and control. This is a key enabler for the next computing paradigm.” 

Varjo Workspace is currently shipping to customers and partners as part of the software delivered with the XR-1 Developer Edition. The XR-1 Developer Edition headset is available for purchase immediately at $9,995 and is sold together with Varjo’s Software and Support service at $1,995. Varjo plans to implement customer and partner feedback in 2020 to further deepen its integration with professional design, engineering, and simulation tools.

Earlier this year, Helsinki, Finland-based company Varjo introduced its VR-1 headset, which was designed to overcome the longstanding impediment to visual immersion in virtual reality (VR): low resolution. Designed for high-end industrial use, the VR-1 features “human eye resolution” of 60 pixels per degree, which the company says is 20 times greater than any other headset available on the market.

According to Varjo’s CEO, Niko Eiden, the VR-1 was engineered to go far beyond the consumer-oriented devices currently available. “You look at the existing headsets today on the market, and what you see is pretty horrible from a resolution perspective,” he said. “The big factor is the rendering capabilities—they are not made to render 360-degree images in high resolution.” Rather than using the traditional approach of one display per eye, the VR-1 utilizes two per eye, with a very high-resolution one—dubbed the “Bionic Display”—at the center of the field of view. “So, even though we’re offering very high resolution at the center of the display, we’re able to keep the computing load low enough so that there are existing desktop machines and laptops that work with our headset,” Eiden said.

What does human eye resolution enable? “You can read in VR,” Eiden said. “You can read a monitor, you can read text, you can see in the same resolution you can see in reality. You can watch a virtual 4K TV, and it will look resolution-wise the same as it would in reality.”

Eiden said that the headset’s display was engineered from off-the-shelf components, combined in a unique way. The lower resolution display is comparable to the resolution of a typical VR headset, and provides the full field of view and peripheral vision. “Then we have an optical combiner, which is basically a 45-degree mirror,” Eiden said. “So, from the side, we can project the center display, and that is a very high-density 0.7-inch Sony high-quality micro OLED. And with that display we can match the human eye resolution.”

Eiden said that the VR-1’s resolution enables far greater sophistication in fields like training and simulation. “If you want to train a person, for example, in a control room, you would like the person to see the instruments, be able to read virtual displays, and interact, and that hasn’t been possible with existing headsets.”

Taking things a step further, the VR-1 also incorporates sophisticated stereo eye tracking technology with sub-degree accuracy, allowing trainers to glean insights from the simulation experience. “You can figure out whether the person you’re training is looking at the right point,” Eiden said. “For example, in pilot training, did the pilot see the warning light?”

Other fields the VR-1 is enhancing include architecture and industrial design, especially in the automotive field. “For designing a car and accelerating the process of design, VR is a very valuable tool,” Eiden said. “They can also use it to allow their customer to configure a future car model that they’re ordering and see it in VR before they actually press the order button.” Companies currently employing the headset include AirBus, Audi, Saab, Volkswagen, and Volvo.

As revolutionary as the VR-1 is, Eiden said that it’s actually just the first step in the company’s mission: to create the best possible mixed reality (MR) hardware. “The idea was to do mixed reality with pass-through video cameras, with proper resolution and very low latency,” he said. “That was the first demo that we built that got investors interested in it, but fairly quickly we realized we had to first fix the virtual reality side of things.”

With that now accomplished, the company is on track to release an add-on later this year that replaces the VR-1’s front plate with an MR-enabling module. “That’s when things are going to get really interesting,” Eiden said.

The VR-1 is shipping now for a retail price of $5,995 and a yearly service fee of $995, and is only available for businesses and academic institutions. Eiden encourages those interested in a demonstration to check Varjo’s website for upcoming trade events at which the company will be exhibiting. The next show in the U.S. is Augmented World Expo 2019, which will be held May 28–31 in Santa Clara, CA.

The What: At NAB 2019, Shure unveiled TwinPlex—a new line of  subminiature (5 mm) omnidirectional lavalier and headset microphones. Designed to stand up to the toughest conditions, TwinPlex provides natural audio at both high and low frequency when professional vocal performance is a must, according to the company.

The What Else: TwinPlex consists of four lavaliers (TL45, TL46, TL47, TL48) and a light, fully-adjustable headset microphone (TH53) in multiple colors with accessories and options. Shure says the dual-diaphragm omnidirectional design yields off-axis consistency and low self-noise creating lifelike vocal clarity and warmth.

“In developing TwinPlex, we gathered valuable input from leading industry professionals at every stage of the process and extensively tested prototypes to ensure we were ready,” said John Born, senior global product manager, Shure. “This resulted in a comprehensive portfolio of more than 60 versions in a variety of color, connector, cable, frequency response, and sensitivity to meet the demands of any application when you need amazing sound quality and unprecedented durability.”

The Invisible Cities opera, written by Christopher Cerrone and based on the 1972 novel by Italo Calvino, combines historical fiction with surrealist elements to create an 'invisible opera for wireless headphones'. The opera's narrative, which centers on explorer Marco Polo's descriptions of fantastical cities to Emperor Kublai Khan, transforms Calvino's novel into a unique experience for each participant — combining a classic art form with modern technology. By using wireless headphones from Sennheiser, audience members will be connected to the storyline, while having the ability to roam freely as the opera moves throughout the terminal.

While Invisible Cities is an opera at its essence, it is unconventional in many ways. For example, there is no opera house and no assigned seats — audience members are not restricted in their movement and encouraged to roam freely. Also, whereas audience members at a conventional opera typically rely solely on natural building acoustics to hear an operatic production, Invisible Cities will utilize Sennheiser's wireless technology to convey both dialogue and music to listeners. Performers will be outfitted with Sennheiser wireless microphones and attendees will use Sennheiser's RS 120 wireless consumer headphones for a complete audio experience.

At the heart of Invisible Cities' technical production will be Sennheiser's Digital 9000 wireless system. An 11-piece orchestra consisting of strings, brass and percussion will perform an original score and will be miked using a selection of Sennheiser and Neumann microphones. Singers, dancers and performers in the production will also be outfitted with Sennheiser wireless microphones, and will be able to listen to their performances and director cues using Sennheiser's in-ear monitoring system (IEMs). The performance audio will be sent to a multi-channel digital console, where it will be mixed and broadcast via wireless RF technology to attending patrons, each of whom will be donning Sennheiser wireless headphones.

Bexel, based in Burbank, Calif., custom-built a Managed Antenna System (MAS) that allows for extended coverage of Sennheiser’s wireless microphones, in-ear monitors and headsets.
On the audio side, Bexel also supported Sennheiser’s microphones with a DiGiCo SD11 paired with a DiGiCo D-Rack. The orchestra, located approximately 1,000 feet from the main hall, is connected via fiber. The DiGiCo system allows the audio mixer to control the mic preamp from that distance.
