[Are We on the Brink of a New Format War?]

With the rise of USB-C and DP Alt Mode in devices such as Cisco’s Codec EQ and Room Bar Pro, Neat Bar Gen 2, Logitech MeetUp 2, and others, AV and IT teams are running into a common challenge: how to connect legacy two-cable HDMI/USB systems to these new single-port, USB-C devices. Most extension kits and tabletop interfaces weren’t designed with DP Alt Mode in mind, leading to compromises in performance or functionality.

“There’s a growing disconnect between what today’s video bars need and what most AV systems can deliver,” said David Neaderland, founder, president, and CEO of Sound Control Technologies. “The USB-AMV bridges that gap—giving customers a clean, reliable way to connect legacy systems to modern USB-C devices without ripping out their existing infrastructure.”

While most modern laptops already support DP Alt Mode over USB-C, AV endpoints have lagged behind due to high development costs and limited compatibility. SCT’s USB-AMV helps close that gap, by providing a clean, reliable way to interface with these devices using existing HDMI and USB sources – ideal for BYOD and BYOM environments.

The USB-AMV merges HDMI and USB into one uncompressed USB-C DP Alt Mode output while supporting full-bandwidth AV signal transfer with uncompressed video and audio. It was designed as a compact, plug-and-play solution, requiring no programming or external power, and is compatible with a wide range of DP Alt Mode-capable codecs and video bars.

The back of my entertainment center used to be a plate of spaghetti, minus the plate. It was organized only to the extent that the proper cables were plugged into the proper ports. Besides that, it was a tangled mess of speaker wire, RCA audio cables, component cables, composite cables, coax (for cable and antenna), extra cables, and probably tumbleweeds.

Over the years, the retirement of several components, such as my beloved five-disc CD player, certainly contributed to reducing the chaos behind the scenes. However, nothing really changed the connection game for me quite like HDMI. One cable that could handle audio and video? You could almost hear a choir sing "Ode to Joy" as the clouds parted and a rainbow's end took root behind my television.

Since then, despite initial opposition, this consumer technology has been embraced at the Pro AV level as well. USB-C is starting to muscle in on its territory, but both connectivity options appear to be thriving. So, I suppose it's as good a time as any to introduce a new interface and disrupt the industry all over again.

Welcome to the party, GPMI.

Short for General Purpose Media Interface, GPMI was announced in April, and it has the backing of more than 50 Chinese companies, including big consumer brands like Hisense and TCL, through the Shenzhen 8K UHD Video Industry Collaboration Alliance.

What makes GPMI so special? Perhaps the easiest way to explain is to offer a comparison. HDMI 2.2 was introduced earlier this year at CES. The big talking point was its jump to a maximum data rate of 96 Gbps, double the 48 Gbps of HDMI 2.1, which was introduced in 2017. GPMI will offer two cable options: Its USB-C cable also supports 96 Gbps, but its proprietary Type-B cable supports 192 Gbps.

My gut reaction is to take points off for yet another I/O port—I'm still recovering from my relationship with Apple's Lightning cable—but double the data rate of HDMI's recent doubling of its data rate gives me pause. Between 4K esports, 8K content, and the next big bandwidth-sucking visual innovation (whatever it is), more data is always appreciated.

And then there is GPMI's other attractive feature: power. HDMI is certainly not going to charge your phone or power your display. In contrast, GPMI can deliver up to 240W (USB-C) or 480W (Type-B). Throw in some data transfer capabilities and it's easy to make a case for GPMI … at least on paper.

Ken Hong, head of corporate communications and public relations for Hisense Americas Region, told me the company recognizes the potential of GPMI. "That said, GPMI is still very much in its early stages, with ongoing work on chipset implementation and broader adoption," he explained. "As a member of the Shenzhen 8K UHD Video Industry Cooperation Alliance, our involvement reflects our commitment to contributing to the advancement of display interface technologies while exploring the possibilities for integrating GPMI into our future products as the standard matures."

So, GPMI isn't quite ready to stake its real estate claim on the back panel of your next Black Friday TV purchase. But it might just be ready for the one after that.

The big question is: Will you care?

LG, Samsung, and Sony—three of the biggest names in TVs—are not in the alliance, so universal industry adoption is not a given. Heck, adoption outside of China isn't a guarantee, either. And don't discount the ubiquitous nature of HDMI. It's here, it works, and newer versions already support 8K (which is yet to firmly plant its own flag in the consumer or professional mainstream).

In other words, this could develop into a fascinating format war over the next few years. Or not. I'll let you know a in a few Black Fridays.

SCN: What made you decide to start MSolutions?

Eliran Toren: After five-and-a-half years at Valens, I felt ready to move into a new phase of my professional career. My work at Valens required excessive travel, and over that time I developed strong industry relationships. That included hundreds of installers and dealers, and I learned their pain points. In the process, I developed an abundance of ideas that would help them better address their needs and solve problems along the way. I started MSolutions to coalesce these ideas around a vision that would bring affordable, problem-solving solutions to AV installers.

[Workplace 2025: HDBaseT Alliance]

SCN: How important has your previous experience at Valens been to the development of MSolutions product lines?

ET: My time at Valens, where HDBaseT was invented, instilled a strong knowledge of the foundational elements within the infrastructure as well as the possibilities it enabled for in-room AV connectivity. I understood what HDBaseT offered for the convergence of uncompressed video, audio, data, and more over longer distances, and the value that brought inside spaces such as meeting rooms, classrooms, and auditoriums, including a streamlined cabling infrastructure that reduced costs and clutter. That started with the extenders.

SCN: There are several distribution protocols out there, so why are you sold on HDBaseT?

ET: Beyond its foundational capabilities outlined above, the advances that come with HDBaseT 3.0 open up new technological opportunities for MSolutions. We have more bandwidth to work with and that allows us to be more creative on the product development side. We have 18 Gbps versus the 10 Gbps ceiling of HDBaseT 2.0 and AV over IP. And we do have an AV over IP product line that will continue to grow. For dedicated spaces, and especially those designed as collaborative environments, HDBaseT 3.0 has much more to offer for everyone through to the end user.

SCN: What makes your TestPro products stand out?

ET: The most important takeaway is that the MSTestPro is the only test solution approved by the HDBaseT organization. It is a handheld device that gives installers direct access to important parameters related to system performance. That includes the presence and quality of AV signals moving through the system, as well as the structural integrity of the cables that carry these signals. The results are displayed on a GUI and provide installers immediate understanding of what actions, if any, are required.

Another important feature is that the MSTestPro is an all-inclusive solution to support the testing, analysis, and certification of HDBaseT, HDMI, USB, and DC resistance, with modules specific to each that attach to the tester. Our newly enhanced UCT module is the AV industry’s only dedicated solution for qualifying USB-C cables and interfaces, verifying wire mapping, USB version compliance, alternate mode support, data lane structure, and power delivery. This is an important value-add with the increased presence of USB-C in meeting and learning spaces.

SCN: You test and manufacture cables—so, what’s the secret to building a reliable professional cable?

ET: We supply a cable with every device we manufacture. When we sell a USB extender, it’s important that we provide the installer with the correct corresponding USB cable. The USB world is very complex, with many different versions and specifications. Buying an off-the-shelf USB cable can be a gamble for compatibility as well as structural integrity. We build all our cables to exacting specifications. There are no missing wires and no shorts on the connectors.

SCN: What bad habits should AV professionals avoid to help their cables last longer?

ET: The testing needs to be thorough and needs to be done across the entire system. It amazes us to this day how many systems go remarkably undertested. Confirming the presence of an image will not tell the entire story. If the image is on the edge of failure, something as simple as turning on the air conditioner or lowering the shade can result in loss of image. Our modules attach directly to the cable, which makes it easy to test cable integrity at very precise points.

SCN: How important has USB-C become for the Pro AV industry?

ET: USB-C will fully dominate in the coming years. USB-C has the power to carry everything needed in an AV environment over a single wire, with the added simplicity of a small connector. There is less ongoing expense in comparison to HDMI. The latest signs of USB-C domination is the inclusion of USB-C ports on displays from companies like Lenovo. As more USB-C ports are added to displays, you’ll see HDMI connectivity gradually fade from view over time.

SCN: Speaking of USB-C, I saw a new meeting room connectivity solution at your ISE 2025 booth. What makes the MS-63DOC unique?

ET: It all comes down to simplicity. The MS-DOC63 is at the core of our 1Connect meeting room ecosystem, which more specifically is anchored through the MS-63DOC Docking Extender Kit. That kit pairs host and device MS-DOC63 units for AV and USB transport. On the front end, a single USB-C cable connects the originating source, such as a presenter’s laptop, to the local MS-63DOC host device.

The host unit acts as a docking station gateway, maintaining single-cable efficiency by moving all signals (including control) to an MS-63DOC device unit over Category cable. The device unit functions as a robust docking extender and unlocks all connections to destinations on the back end. Those connections can include up to two displays (via HDMI), a USB or PTZ camera (via USB 3.2 or USB-C connections), and a digital or analog audio speaker output.

The MS-DOC63 is instrumental as to how 1Connect seamlessly unifies AV and USB signals on the front end while delivering unmatched flexibility and integration on the back end. At InfoComm, we will introduce the MS-63DOC-P unit, which offers the same functionality plus 60 watts of device charging.

SCN: MSolutions also has KVM solutions, so I have to ask: Are you Team Traditional KVM or Team KVM over IP?

ET: We remain both proponents and suppliers of both. Smaller meeting spaces, classrooms, and huddle rooms need point-to-point connections. That is all that is needed to do the job, because the spaces are small and the technology requirements are minimal. KVM over IP can be useful for larger meeting spaces with more IP networking needs, but its real value is for facilities with 50 or more meeting spaces. That’s a sound threshold for making that leap.

SCN: What’s next for MSolutions?

ET: We are actively building out a business infrastructure in North America that is anchored through a distribution channel. Stirling Communications has been a strong partner for us in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. We are continuing to build our North American structure to include more dealers.

SCN: How long have you been with this company, and what are your responsibilities?

Mark Plummer: I’ve been with Legrand for 10 years, and the VP and general manager of C2G since July 2024. I am responsible for the connectivity and structured wiring business at Legrand | AV under the C2G and On-Q brands.

SCN: How has the C2G brand evolved over the years?

MP: C2G started out as a custom cable manufacturer. We made the first cable that connected a Sony monitor to a Commadore computer. Over the years, we have continued with this custom focus but have expanded our offerings to become one of the top connectivity vendors in the IT channel. Several years ago, C2G moved to the AV division of Legrand, where we have continued to expand our expertise into the AV channel. We not only support our other Legrand brands with connectivity, but we strive to provide compatibility with the most popular brands in the market. We also work to continue to bring out innovative products.

SCN: C2G offers Performance Series HDMI Cables—what are the differences between premium cables and standard cables?

MP: The Premium HDMI Cable Certification Program requires additional and more rigorous cable testing at authorized test centers, along with a comprehensive authentication and verification process. This program is designed to provide consumers with confidence, ensuring the cables meet the 18 Gbps specification. In our Performance Series, we offer both Premium Certified cables and a selection of high-quality non-certified cables. While our non-certified cables are made from the same premium materials and undergo stringent in-house testing, the Premium Certified cables provide an added layer of assurance, ensuring reliable performance and peace of mind for our customers. We also offer standard HDMI cables for applications where 1080p resolutions are acceptable and budgets are tighter.

SCN: How popular are your HDMI Adapter Rings and where are they being used?

MP: HDMI Adapter Rings are very popular, especially in conference rooms and classrooms where BYOD is allowed. By installing an HDMI Adapter Ring, any laptop can connect to the monitor. They are also used in desktop applications for companies with hotdesking or desk sharing. Our color-coded adapters make it easy for users to identify the correct adapter. Additionally, our HDMI Adapter Rings on retractors are popular for lecterns.

SCN: Has USB-C surpassed HDMI in sales?

MP: Not yet. USB-C is a fantastic cable, offering data, video, and power over a single connection. However, its length is limited to 9 feet, making it suitable primarily for desktop applications. In contrast, passive HDMI cables can reach up to 25 feet, making them more practical for conference rooms, classrooms, and digital signage. HDMI connections remain more common on monitors and TVs. While more monitors with USB-C are emerging, widespread deployment will take time.

SCN: Conversely, what older cable formats might surprise us because they are still being produced?

MP: We still sell VGA cables, which have defied predictions of an analog sunset for the past 15 years. DVI and DB9 cables are also still in demand, which may come as a surprise.

SCN: Is there an optimum length for most cable types?

MP: This varies by cable type, resolution/bandwidth, and the quality of the cable. As mentioned, a passive HDMI cable can typically reach 25 feet. A passive USB 3.2 Gen 1 cable can reach 9 feet. When you need to go longer distances, we carry active cables as well as active extenders. The active extenders consist of a transmitter and receiver connected with a category cable. This allows you to extend your USB or HDMI cable up to 328 feet.

SCN: There are a lot of inexpensive docking stations in the market, so what makes C2G’s offerings worth the extra investment?

MP: As the saying goes, you get what you pay for. Compatibility is one of the biggest challenges in the market. We conduct extensive testing with the most popular devices to ensure that whatever you plug in, it works. The price of the docking station depends on the features required. For basic needs, an inexpensive solution may suffice. However, for multi-monitor setups or applications requiring high resolution, high bandwidth, or Ethernet, investing in a quality docking station is necessary.

SCN: How can systems contractors better position themselves to profit from products and/or services you have to offer?

MP: Cables and connectivity are often overlooked at the start of a project, leading to last-minute scrambles to get the necessary products. Specifying these items earlier allows us to offer bid pricing and avoid costly air shipment charges. Additionally, consolidating your connectivity business with C2G can result in better volume pricing.

SCN: Any new products we can expect to see later this year at InfoComm?

MP: Yes, we have a new Conference Room Docking Station with Extension, a suite of TAA Cables—HDMI, Category, and DisplayPort—bulk Category cable, and new HDBaseT extenders. We will also be showcasing our new Superbooster USB 3.2 Gen 1 Extenders over Category Cable.

In January, at CES 2025 in Las Vegas, HDMI Forum—a nonprofit run by manufacturers of consumer electronics, PCs, mobile devices, cables, and components—unveiled the new HDMI 2.2 standard. It's the first new HDMI specification since Version 2.1 was announced in 2017.

In a press release, the organization declared the specification delivers "enhanced options" for the HDMI ecosystem. “New technology enables higher quality options now and in the future for content producers such as TV, movie, and game studios, while enabling multiple distribution platforms,” it continued.

Unlike so many other products released to the marketplace, HDMI 2.2 truly is "new and improved." But what does that mean to the Pro AV industry? What are the top features and how will the new standard deliver better performance for end users? SCN spoke with some industry experts to learn what you can expect from HDMI 2.2, as well as when you can expect it to dominate the market.

Multiple Improvements

“The new HDMI 2.2 specification includes multiple enhancements over previous releases,” said Joe da Silva, Extron’s VP of marketing. “One is that it doubles the maximum data rate to 96 Gbps. This increase facilitates greater color bit depth at higher resolutions, resulting in richer colors and pristine images. Two is that HDMI 2.2 enables support for uncompressed 8K at 60 Hz with 4:4:4 color sampling at 8-bit color depth. This capability requires 64.15 Gbps, which is more than HDMI 2.1 can manage."

How important is that data rate, which was 48 Gbps in HDMI 2.1? Well, bumping 8K60 4:4:4 up to 10-bit HDR raises the data rate to 80.19 Gbps, da Silva said, which means HDMI 2.2 can still support it. Plus, it can support an environment that requires 10K60 4:4:4 at 8-bit color depth.

But HDMI 2.2's 96 Gbps data rate isn't just about 8K or 10K support. “It also enables higher frame rates for 1080p and 4K signals, improving visual quality and providing a better experience,” da Silva added. “This is ideal for esports and its fast-action gaming sequences. HDMI 2.2 also enhances the audio experienced by delivering improved synchronization between audio and video source signals.”

Bryan Phann, ViewSonic’s senior business line manager for LFD–Commercial Digital Displays, agreed that HDMI 2.2 delivers a massive leap forward with increased bandwidth, support for up to 8K at 240Hz and 10K at 120Hz, and the Latency Indication Protocol (LIP), which improves audio and video sync. “These innovations align seamlessly with ViewSonic’s dedication to pushing technological boundaries," he said. "As part of our forward-looking strategy, upcoming ViewSonic products will adopt HDMI 2.2, empowering users to experience superior visual clarity, smoother refresh rates, and synchronized audio-visual output. The new Certified Ultra96 cable support will further maximize these gains, ensuring you can unleash the full power of next-generation connectivity.”

Brad Bramy is VP of marketing and operations of HDMI Licensing Administrator, which licenses HDMI technology on behalf of HDMI Forum. He said the new HDMI specification delivers enhanced options for the vast HDMI ecosystem, allowing more advanced solutions to create, distribute, and experience the best end user outcome.

“The new technology enables higher quality options now and in the future for content producers such as TV, movie, and game studios, while enabling multiple distribution platforms," Bramy told SCN. "Higher 96Gbps bandwidth and next-gen HDMI Fixed Rate Link technology provide optimal audio and video for a wide range of device applications. An end user can be assured that their displays support a native video format in the best way possible and can deliver a seamless and reliable experience.”

Positive Impact

The experts agree that HDMI 2.2 is good news for Pro AV. According to da Silva, standards like HDMI benefit the industry because they create a roadmap for implementing new features and innovations.

“Developing the next evolution of product designs to an agreed upon specification brings compatible advancements to the market, including higher resolutions, refresh rates for brighter and more vivid images, and new technology," he explained. "Users benefit from these enhancements and further interoperability among the widening array of computer, media player, switcher, and display device brands and models, enjoying an ever more enriched visual experience. Backward compatibility is also beneficial to the user by allowing older equipment to continue to function in new and upgraded installations.”

Incorporating HDMI 2.2 into digital displays brings tangible advantages for various Pro AV applications such as digital signage (sharper visuals in retail and corporate spaces), esports (reduced latency and ultra-smooth refresh rates), and professional displays. “These features underscore why ViewSonic is dedicated to leading with HDMI 2.2 in upcoming product lines,” Phann said.

The HDMI 2.2 advancements also "enhance the visual experience, allowing higher refresh rates such as 4K at up to 480Hz, 8K at up to 240Hz, and 10K at 120Hz for signals with 4:2:0 color space,” said da Silva. “This can play a significant role in esports arenas and labs, providing smoother gameplay in a more immersive experience for the gamer and audience alike. The higher resolution and color bit depth ensure even greater details for large digital signage and displays, as well as massive video walls and displays for stadiums, shopping complexes, and similar venues. In the education market, the higher data rates, resolutions, and refresh rates of HDMI 2.2 enhances the depth and details, allowing more to be seen and enjoyed in the widest array of environments."

And that faster 96Gbps bandwidth improves demanding data-intensive, immersive, and virtual applications such as virtual reality, spatial reality, and light field displays as well as various commercial applications such as large-scale digital signage, medical imaging, and machine vision. “HDMI 2.2 also includes Latency Indication Protocol for improving audio and video synchronization, which is especially beneficial for multiple-hop system configurations such as those with an audio video receiver or soundbar,” Bramy added.

Applies to Everything

The advent of HDMI 2.2 will touch every aspect of the Pro AV (and consumer AV) market. And the new specification applies to “all [new] HDMI devices, including cable, source, sink, and repeater,” Bramy said. “It is part of the HDMI Cable Certification Program, requiring each model length to be tested and certified and display a Certification Label. All cables claiming compliance to the HDMI 2.2 specification are required to print the Ultra96 HDMI Cable name on the cable jacket and display the official Ultra96 HDMI Cable label on the packages.”

“While using Certified Ultra96 cables is crucial, achieving the fullest potential of HDMI 2.2 also requires compatible hardware,” noted Phann. “This is why ViewSonic’s next-generation displays and digital signage solutions will incorporate HDMI 2.2 technology to enable higher resolutions and optimized latency. Future ViewSonic releases, such as the CDE Ultra-Wide Series and advanced interactive flat panels, will explicitly highlight HDMI 2.2 compatibility to streamline purchasing decisions and usage.”

How long will it take HDMI 2.2 to become the dominant Pro AV/consumer AV standard? Bramy expects it will take two years, but Phann is a bit more conservative in his estimate: “Market-wide adoption is expected to grow steadily over the next three to five years,” he said. One thing is certain: HDMI 2.2 is the new gold standard for this technology, so Pro AV integrators and installers should prepare for this new reality accordingly.

Key Digital has updated its in-line Ultra HD/4K 18G HDMI Fixer with the release of the KD-FIX418A-2, an update to its in-line Ultra HD/4K 18G HDMI Fixer. This new release is important for integrators by meeting the evolving market needs and offering switchable 4K down-conversion to 1080p to support legacy monitors and projectors, as well as de-embedded digital audio via a TOSLINK optical port. 

“Every AV tech should have a KD-FIX418A-2 in their kit,” said Key Digital VP of sales DeWayne Rains. “Whether it’s used to identify an issue, as a short-term fix or a permanent solution, the KD-FIX418A-2 is an inexpensive tool that reliably solves HDMI related problems.”

The KD-FIX418A-2 supports video resolutions from SD up to 4096x2160 with fully licensed HDCP 2.2 compatibility, deep color support and HDR10 and Dolby Vision extended luminance level. Key Digital’s Full Buffer System manages TMDS re-clocking/signal re-generation, HDCP authentication to source and display, Hot Plug management, and EDID control handshake. An internal library of 15 internal EDID handshakes, in addition to native EDID data copied from the output/display, ensure the optimal source image is output from the source device.  

In cases where layers of connectivity or non-standard devices in-line lead to a video source not detecting a display/sync device, and thus not outputting a signal, the KD-FIX418A-2’s Forced HPD tool fixes the Hot Plug Detection voltage ON to inform the source device that there is a live display to receive its signal. Bi-directional communication passes ARC return audio from a connected ARC supported display to a connected ARC supported HDMI source and CEC control is also passed from a connected display to the selected HDMI source.

Analog and digital audio de-embedding is facilitated through 3.5mm analog stereo and optical digital connectors to enable integration of HDMI transported audio into distributed audio systems, audio DSPs, amplifiers or sound bars. The digital audio output supports PCM stereo audio and Dolby and DTS formats from stereo to 7.1 channels. 

If there’s one thing the Pro AV industry is known for, it’s our continued adoption of and reliance on proprietary systems for signal management products. Consider that related industries (telecom, broadcast, cinema, streaming, and digital imaging) work in collaborative, worldwide industry groups to develop, test, and adopt standards for audio and video interfacing and compression. Meanwhile, we often simply pick “winners” from groups of competing proprietary systems and stick with those, basing our choices on strong marketing and sales pitches.

Think of all the HDMI-based switchers and extenders offered over the past two decades: While most of them worked quite well, the dominant products got that way simply because their manufacturers were big enough to outsell competitors early on, establishing an iron grip that eventually pushed out any newcomers.

[USB-C: One Size Fits All?]

Now, we’re seeing a similar thing happen with the transition to IT/IP-based switching and distribution of video signals. Outside of the AV industry, the codecs used to compress video are based on open-source formats that grew out of user groups, were extensively tested and improved, and eventually became standardized. The best-known examples are those developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG, founded in 1988) and Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG, founded in 1992).

Both professionals and consumers cross paths with these codecs on a regular basis. Broadcast, cable, and steaming video all employ MPEG codecs (MPEG-2, MPEG-4 H.264, HEVC H.265), while photographers (and your smartphone) rely on JPEG variations. Digital cinema also uses a JPEG-based codec, JPEG2000.

The advantages of standardizing on these open-source codecs are obvious: Anyone anywhere in the world—using a compliant TV, computer, tablet, phone, or other viewer—can watch MPEG video streams and JPEG-compressed photos over wireless or wired connections.

MPEG-derived codecs typically have high compression ratios and correspondingly high latency. They’re designed for efficiency first and foremost, minimizing bit rates and file sizes. So, they’re not suitable for real-time signal distribution and playback.

[Why dvLED Is Gaining Market Share]

On the other hand, JPEG-derived codecs have very low latency and use much less compression, but the resulting video streams have higher data rates and large file sizes. Logically, if we want to replace HDMI-based signal management systems with an AV-over-IP equivalent to deliver low-latency high-quality video, then a JPEG-based codec—or a similar proprietary system that uses light compression—is the only way to go. But which is the best choice?

Point of Order: Compression

There are many ways video signals can be compressed. JPEG codecs do this by performing light compression on a series of still frames of video, which are then played back at standard frame rates. (Think of those flip movies you made as a kid.)

Unlike MPEG compression, which uses a “copy and repeat” method to minimize redundant picture information from frame to frame, combined with frames that look forward and backward to predict spatial and temporal changes (hence, all that latency), JPEG uses no frame interpolation and prediction at all. All the luminance and color information in each JPEG frame of video is complete and can stand separate from preceding and subsequent video frames.

Display Stream Compression (DSC), another light compression method that was originally developed in 2014 for display signals, works in a similar manner and is the basis for a proprietary video codec now being marketed for AV signal management, using the older HDMI version 2.0. The difference between DSC and JPEG codecs is that DSC is limited to 2:1 compression—just enough to push an Ultra HD (4K) video signal with 8-bit RGB color through a 10 Gbps network switch.

Star Witness: JPEG XS

While DSC has been demonstrated in the past with as much as 3:1 compression, a version of JPEG known as JPEG XS (ISO/IEC 21122) has achieved much higher compression ratios and was found to exhibit minimal signal deterioration. Because JPEG XS uses less compression than MPEG codecs, but more than other JPEG-derived codecs, it’s sometimes referred to as a “mezzanine level” codec.

[Cloud Power: The Importance of Interoperability]

At the 2018 NAB Show, the Japanese broadcast network NHK demonstrated 8K video (7680x4320 pixels) with 4:2:2 10-bit color, compressed 6:1, passing through a 10 Gbps network switch. (For those interested in the math, the uncompressed data rate was 47.7 Gbps, and the resulting compressed signal was just under 8 Gbps).

And NHK didn’t cheat on the demo. They used video of a water polo match and showed the compressed signal on a 70-inch 8K LCD TV. As anyone well-versed in video compression knows moving and splashing water is very difficult to compress without introducing artifacts. But it was difficult to see any evidence of aliasing or other artifacts in the decoded signal.

JPEG XS as a codec has been around for more than a decade. One Pro AV brand has used it to compress Full HD signals and pass them through a 1 Gbps network switch. And, for a long time, while the conventional wisdom with JPEG-based compression systems was not to exceed 4:1 compression, JPEG XS has lifted much heavier weight than that, going up to 10:1 with acceptable results while retaining low latency.

JPEG XS is easily integrated with a wide variety of applications. From the JPEG XS website: “JPEG XS works with…professional video links (3G/6G/12G-SDI), IP transport (SMPTE 2022-5/6 & SMPTE 2110), real-time video storage, memory buffers, omni-directional video capture systems, head-mounted displays for Virtual or Augmented Reality, and image sensor compression.”

While JPEG XS is strictly a video codec, it travels easily over standard IP networks with the appropriate headers through switches that are set to pass “jumbo” Ethernet frames larger than 1,536 bytes. (MPEG video can travel in standard Ethernet frames.) And JPEG XS moves easily alongside industry-standard audio codecs and control signal packets, along with ancillary data (captions, ratings, and even ancillary languages).  Also from the JPEG XS Web site: “Its design offers various degrees of parallelism allowing for efficient implementation on various platforms such as FPGAs, ASICs, CPUs and GPUs.”

The Defense Rests

If you’ve attended large industry trade shows like NAB, ISE, InfoComm, and IBC in recent years, you’ve certainly noticed the lines blurring between broadcast, cinema, and Pro AV, and even consumer electronics. Whatever differences remain essentially disappear once all these industry segments migrate to AV-over-IP networks.

[SDVoE: One Standard to Rule Them All?]

Today, the same video interfaces are found on professional video cameras (HDMI) as on televisions and computer monitors (again, HDMI), alongside serial data interfaces (3G and 12G-SDI). 10 Gb network switches with built-in HDMI ports are now available, further blurring the lines.

The takeaway here is that MPEG and JPEG codecs are continually being improved. Just as H.264 is being replaced by H.265, the next generation of high-efficiency codecs (Versatile Video Codec or VVC) claims to be 50% more efficient—a handy thing if you’re streaming 4K or even 8K video.

And so it goes with JPEG-based codecs: JPEG XS has been successfully tested with compression ratios as high as 16:1, and it will no doubt continue to improve. Best of all, it will work with any video source—baseband or display—using software encoding and decoding across any viewing platform through any IT network.

SCN: How long have you been with this company, and what are your responsibilities?

James Chen: I began my career as an integrator and moved into sales management, where I helped put BenQ on the map in Australia. I also helped expand the reach of Epson and Samsung products into the professional integration community.

[Executive Q&A: Keep It Clean]

I joined Kordz in 2008 as general manager. Back then, it was a promising startup in Melbourne, Australia, finding a foothold in the professional cabling market. For the last 10 years, as managing director of Kordz International, I’ve focused on serving the connectivity needs of the professional integration community and spearheaded the distribution of our solutions to more than 40 countries. Essentially, I am responsible for the whole business, ensuring that our technology evolves to meet the emerging connectivity needs of our dealers and their customers. 

SCN: Your company likes to say, “It takes one to know one.” What do you mean by that?

JC: At Kordz, many people on our team started their careers as integrators. We are all the kind of guys that grew up with parents who were handy with tools, and it fostered a love of tinkering, pulling things apart, and finding ways to make them better and faster.

Even at an early age, we strove to wow people with what we could create. As adults, we channeled this inquisitiveness into our professional lives in AV, where we felt fed up with service calls and stiff, inflexible cables that were so difficult to install. We knew there had to be a better way and hence strove to make better cabling products.

Our team shares a desire to do high-quality work that’s right the first time, so we can move on to the next thing. We realize that the kind of integrators that use Kordz products are just like us. A good integrator knows what good quality is when they have it in their hand.

Is the product supple and flexible? Is the jacketing tough and robust? Is the cable easy to work with? Does it have the correct markings for performance, fire, and safety? Does it come with the correct and accurate set of specifications and certifications? Is it well thought out and designed? Does the manufacturer know what they are talking about? Will I get support when I need it?

There are many more questions that any professional with experience will innately have and also know when they see it. We know not everyone is wired this way, and that’s why we say, “It takes one to know one.” 

SCN: What makes your new PRO SlimCat product line unique?

JC: Kordz was one of the first brands to develop slim patch leads. It wasn’t long before our customers were asking for a slim Cat6 cable that they could site terminate. Hence, the PRO SlimCat line was born. PRO SlimCat is a new-gen network cabling system that offers all the power of a Cat6 cable in half the size. We are very excited about our suite of PRO SlimCat products, which includes cabling and matching connectors and keystone sockets. Based on the response of attendees at ISE, the global integration community seems excited about it, too.

PRO SlimCat mitigates many of the common pain points experienced by integrators during the deployment of networking cable, especially in retrofit situations where space is tight and in projects with high-density equipment racks. The fact that PRO SlimCat adheres to all current communications standards, including full 100-watt PoE++ compliancy, makes it all the more beneficial to systems integrators and their customers. 

SCN: We tend to focus on the cables, but what’s your approach to developing the connectors?

JC: Connectors are just as important as cables. They are the point at which the greatest signal loss can occur. At Kordz, we believe connectors should be tailored specifically for every cable to ensure the entire network performs optimally.  

[Executive Q&A: Let's Get Technical]

We believe that a good connector should fit well in the socket, so it’s neither tight nor loose, has the appropriate extraction force for the specific application, and is made of materials to ensure durability and longevity. The internal construction should exceed the specification and meet the promised capacity. It can take us up to 18 months of careful engineering and testing to get the design and manufacturing of each connector right.

I believe the most critical aspect of a quality connector, however, comes from how it was manufactured. A poor-quality connector is the result of tolerances eroding on the production line due to both human and machine error. At Kordz, we minimize these errors by manufacturing the connectors in-house on high-quality machinery and testing every component on the line at each phase of development. This thorough QA process makes all the difference. 

SCN: What have been some of the major changes in the cable manufacturing industry since Kordz was established?

JC: Kordz was born 20 years ago at the infancy of digital connectivity. Since its inception, we’ve seen a huge array of electronic devices enter the market. At the same time, consumers have grown increasingly tech savvy, expecting greater performance and capabilities from their technology. As the market shifts, so must the supporting cabling infrastructure. Today, the cabling foundation of homes and businesses must facilitate stable, reliable connectivity and optimal performance of bandwidth-intensive technologies, platforms, and services.

In the early stages of networking, the options for cabling were somewhat polarized. There were high-quality, expensive, standards-based, proprietary solutions—and there were open, more cost-effective, less capable protocol-agnostic solutions. There was nothing in between for the professional integrator. Kordz was one of the first brands to cater to this middle ground, offering a range of products, each designed and engineered to adhere to a specific communications protocol, ensure superior connectivity, and enable fast, efficient deployment.

Cabling requirements may likely shift again as we enter a new era of networking that demands something I call predictable reliability. Our world has become increasingly unpredictable, as control and management of smart devices have moved to the cloud, where updates happen transparently, and subscriptions and support often lapse, potentially rendering devices inoperable.

Predictable reliability is the practice of providing a predictable and reliable experience for end users. It takes time, knowledge, practice, and therefore experience to deliver a reliable and predictable outcome for any situation. Kordz has made predictable reliability its ongoing goal to deliver value to its customers. 

Last but not least, I notice greater recognition among integrators of the importance of quality, safety, and adherence to fire regulations, better transmission methods and language, and simplification of cabling to single twisted pair cabling. 

SCN: How is Kordz celebrating its 20th anniversary?

JC: We launched our 20th anniversary celebrations at ISE earlier this year. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with many of our dealers and customers from around the world who have been on the journey with Kordz for many years, as well as meet many new people. We hosted several evenings of birthday drinks, presented many giveaways, and moderated a cable termination challenge at our booth, which was the highlight of the show.

[Viewpoint: A Meeting Equity Progress Report]

As the year progresses, we want to celebrate our customers and learn how they are applying technology in meaningful ways. By better understanding the challenges they face, we can continue to refine our solutions to meet their needs. The 20th anniversary party will continue at Smart Home Expo in New Delhi, followed by InfoComm, Integrate in Sydney, and CEDIA Expo. By popular demand, we’ll be running the cable termination challenge at major events and welcome SCN readers to see if they can beat the best time.

Personally, I feel really proud of what the company has achieved and everything it's taken to reach this point. Our lifetime warranty means even more as we continue to be around to stand by it.

SCN: You have one distributor, Future Ready Solutions, in North America. Are you looking to expand your distribution network in the United States?

JC: Our relationship with Future Ready Solutions is very strong. As our U.S. market grows, we hope to continue to refine how we do things and add value to the distribution chain. Kordz focuses on manufacturing and innovation for the professional integrator, so it is critical to our success to constantly look at how we can strengthen our relationships with our distributors. 

SCN: As someone who has them attached to every TV in his house, what makes one HDMI cable better than another?

JC: There are two key attributes I recommend professional integrators look for in an HDMI cable. First, is it certified? Look for the HDMI licensing logo or go to hdmi.org to determine if the manufacturer is an official HDMI adopter. This makes them legally responsible for upholding the standards. I recommend downloading the HDMI app and scanning the certification code on the packaging to ensure you're getting the real deal. If you see cables labeled with version numbers like 1.4, 2.0, or 2.1, it's a red flag. The manufacturers of these cables are not real HDMI adopters, since this practice was banned by HDMI in 2017.

[Editorial: Can NDI Become Ubiquitous?]

Second, look closely at specific manufacturing and engineering specs. For example, all Kordz HDMI connectors have extraction ratings (10 newtons for our PRO series, 20 newtons for our PRS and R.3) to ensure the weight of the cable doesn’t pull the connector loose. 

SCN: What is the most popular type of cable you sell, and has that changed over the past few years?

JC: Our most popular bulk wire is our speaker wire, as it follows the Kordz cable concepts closely (quality materials, easy to work with, flexible and robust) and we support this with lots of technical specifications that are easy to understand so integrators know what to specify.

Our most popular cable is the R.3 HDMI cable. It is super flexible, given it is one of the most-shielded HDMI cables available, and it has been used for everything from plugging in a TV to mission-critical projects in hospitals, military environments, and even in space. It has been designed specifically to operate within areas of high electromagnetic interference, such as equipment racks.

As previously mentioned, there are a lot of communications platforms; fortunately, they have been built around common network cabling. Therefore, the changes we’ve seen in recent years revolve around improved certification, fire rating, and safety. 

Everybody loves the quality and convenience of HDMI—until something goes wrong. Then it’s a big problem. Thankfully, Vanco has a small solution: the new HD4KTEST. This one will move quickly from the stocking to your field engineer’s tool bag.

SCN: How long have you been with this company, and what are your responsibilities?

Norm Carson: I’ve been the CEO of Covid for 24 years. I spend the majority of my time working alongside my team in order to build a great company culture and ensure we’re hitting our goals. I also enjoy focusing my energy on connecting with customers, whether at trade shows or personal onsite visits, so I can hear about the projects they’re working on and what their needs are in order to ensure they’re successful and profitable.

[Viewpoint: How Fast is the Pace of Technological Progress?]

SCN: How has your background prepared you for your role?

NC: I've been in the industry for 30 years and lucky enough to have worked on both the dealer/system integrator side and the manufacturing side. I believe that experience provided me with a very extensive view of the industry. I was able to glean an in-depth understanding of the challenges that our dealers face, and I love working with them to solve those problems.

SCN: I really don’t want to ask this, but about that name…?

NC: Obviously, our company name has brought a lot of attention and questions, mostly from those outside the industry. We’ve experienced everything from people asking us if we’re a test site to people looking for assistance or wanting to take pictures of our building. Of course, we’ve considered changing our name in the last two years, and even asked our dealers for their input. Despite the current situation, it has led to some positive rapport and new opportunities with new and existing customers, many of whom have been with us since the beginning. Based on their feedback, we’re sticking with our name. I’m still proud of what the name represents, the trust in our products and customer service, and the 40 years that we've been in business. 

SCN: How is Covid, Inc. celebrating its 40th anniversary?

NC: We wouldn’t be anywhere without our customers, so our main focus is thanking everyone that has been part of our long history. We’re looking forward to continuing to serve them in the best way possible for the next 40 years and beyond.

SCN: You’re known for your custom wall plates. How easy is it to create a custom wall plate (or several dozen) for a project?

NC: Custom wall plates have been a large part of our success at Covid. We have a full machine shop, which is where we make just about any custom panel a customer might require, and we have thousands of stock plates. Using our intuitive cloud-based Panel Spec design software, customers can literally design a plate, get a quote, and place an order within minutes. They can choose from numerous sizes and hundreds of connectors in a variety of colors. In addition, designs can be saved and edited, stored with other designs in customer-defined projects, and shared with others. Plus, our engineering team is always available to assist customers with more complex designs or answer any questions.

SCN: Based on the inventory you move, what’s more popular for Pro AV: HDMI or DisplayPort?

NC: Hands down HDMI in every sector of our product offering, followed closely by USB. 

SCN: What new initiatives are we likely to see from your company?

NC: One initiative that we are working on as a company in the coming year is employee training, not only on our products, but also on the industry. We want to deliver stronger resources to our customers, and to do that, our goal is to have all our sales support and technical teams obtain their CTS certification over the next year.

[Executive Q&A: Blaze Audio Is On a Mission]

SCN: Where do you see the Pro AV industry heading?

NC: We're seeing strong growth and activity at least through the rest of this year. In our sector, we see the demand for 4K products booming, which has been driving increased sales for both our HDBaseT extenders and switchers as well as our active optical cable line. We are also seeing a few inquiries about our 8K offering, but for many, that's still on the horizon. I think we will continue to see the convergence of AV and IT and the introduction of products in that space. Overall, I'm very excited about the coming year in the AV industry.

SCN: How can systems contractors better position themselves to profit from products and/or services you have to offer?

NC: Our goal at Covid, Inc. is to help systems integrators conquer the challenges they face, while performing both routine and complex installations. This approach is taken from the products that we offer to the services that we provide. Just Add Power's new 718KVM and the rackmount 749KVM will replace the out-of-stock 718AVP and 749AVP indefinitely. Like the AVP models, the new PoE transmitters encode a 4K or lower-resolution source device into an IP signal and send it over the network with ultra-low latency and instant switching; support HDCP 2.2 and USB 2.0; and feature image pull, stereo audio output 3.5mm with adjustable delay, and RS-232, IR, and CEC control of sources. Once available, the upgrade will enable Dolby DSP, re-encoding Dolby Digital 5.1 as Dolby Pro Logic II for HDMI distribution to both multi-channel and stereo audio zones and provide two analog audio inputs that are mixable with HDMI audio. The KVM transmitters are now shipping.

High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) is the most used connector in AV today. The annual global market for cables alone is valued at more than $2.5 billion and has an expected combined growth rate exceeding 5 percent over the next several years. However, since its introduction in 2005, HDMI has saddled AV professionals with numerous complications. It is sensitive to several issues resulting from manufacturing decisions and installation environmental conditions, including voltage inefficacies, improperly powered cable assemblies, link bandwidth, and more.

Starvation and Failure

This transition minimized differential signaling (TMDS) conditioned AV transport method delivers red, green, blue, and sync (clock) payloads over four shielded twisted-pair wires embedded in a 19-conductor cable. Each of these pins plays a role in transporting signals, but for the purpose of this article, our focus is on Pins 18 and 19. Pin 18 is the source for the power bus that allows for E-EDID data transfer across the display data channel (DDC), while Pin 19 is the hot plug detect (HPD) pin.

Nearly a decade ago, it was noted that there was potential for HDMI failure because of voltage “starvation.” In the simplest of cases, voltage drop across an excessive length of copper wire can drive the HPD voltage below the 5V at 55mA +/-5 percent threshold of the HDMI standard. A 24AWG copper wire is .0201 inches in diameter and presents 0.026 ohms per foot of cable in DC resistance. For a 50-foot cable, the total loop DC resistance of Pins 18 and 19 in the circuit (shown mathematically, 0.026x50x2x2) is 5.2 ohms. Ohm’s Law tells us that the voltage drop across a resistor is described by the formula V=IR, where I=0.055A and R=5.2Ω. Therefore, Vdrop = (0.286V). An online calculator confirms the voltage drop at -5.65 percent, with a DC voltage drop of 0.28V across the cable.

Right away, we see this link may fail if the source device is limited to the minimum requirements of the HDMI standard, which isn’t considered a failure. The result is that the longer the HDMI cable, the greater the wire gauge a manufacturer must use to have any confidence the link will work. At some point, the cable will not only become unwieldy and inflexible, but will also increase the likelihood that the payload will be adversely affected by the electrical characteristics of the cable itself.

Unexpected Issues

Often, when an active solution or passive cable doesn’t perform as expected in a system, its design or build quality is immediately suspect. However, it’s possible for the cable to be well designed and appropriate for its task—but associated components can’t provide the power or signal integrity necessary for optimal performance. There is a lot to uncover here that goes beyond the scope of this article, but what’s been discovered is that processing more data requires more power. This holds true for both active optical and active copper solutions.

A good example of this is when a laptop computer is connected to an 4K LED flat panel via a 50-foot active optical cable that is rated for payloads up to and including 4K/UHD 2160p in a 4:4:4 RGB color space. This system works perfectly for 1080p content, but when trying to display 4K content, there’s no picture or the picture is distorted. What happened?

When the active optical cable is transporting an FHD payload, its vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSEL) must flash on and off to communicate each bit sent across the fiber link. There are four VCSELs in an active optical HDMI cable. They are used to convert TMDS lanes 0, 1, 2 and 3 from electrons to light-based transport. This allows for significantly greater link lengths. Additionally, this improves signal fidelity, since fiber is essentially impervious to RFI and EMI, which can dramatically affect the payload in copper links.

[CES 2022: Full Speed Ahead for Displays]

In an FHD system, the lasers will fire more than 3.7 billion times combined each second. Breaking this down, a single VCSEL is pulsing on and off more than 1.2 billion times per second. The clock link must fire just as quickly to keep things in sync, so this is a total of 4.8 billion pulses each second across the four optical lines.

An 4K signal operates at 2160 visible vertical pixels x 3840 visible horizontal pixels. The uncompressed bandwidth of this exchange is 14.92 Gbps. (14.92Gbps is 2160x3840x60 frames/sec x 8 bits per pixel x 3 for each of the red, green, and blue links x 1.25 for the 8b/10b overhead associated with the TMDS conditioning used in HDMI communication.) Each of the lasers is pulsing four times faster for a 4K payload—nearly 5 billion times per second. Clearly the power supply on Pin 18 must work much harder to power the additional pulses. It’s entirely possible the source just can’t muster this kind of power, despite being rated for UHD and meeting the HDMI standard requirements.

Power Variability and Link Failure

The plot thickens as we move from a standard FHD to a payload that is HDR, 4K/UHD, or both. It stands to reason that we are asking the system to process many more bits of information. The more bits we send, the more time it takes for all of them to get through the system unless the data rate is increased.

With many of the systems in use, there is a maximum data rate built into the format. HDMI 1.4 has a maximum data transfer rate of 10.2Gbps, while HDMI 2.0 is 18Gbps. This is where clock stretching comes in—the display can tell the video source to slow down a bit. Most, but not all, HDMI sources support clock stretching. Clock stretching often presents HDCP-protected content issues when HDBaseT extenders are used; it causes a delay that can exceed the limits of the source and stops HDCP content if the EDID isn’t received in time, further consuming more current from the 5V supply.

Additionally, stressing the source device’s HPD power supply may overwhelm the IC buffer in a less than optimal product design, or possibly cause crosstalk noise between the SLC clock and the SDA data lanes. The ACK command may then be interpreted incorrectly as a follower device holding the SDA line LOW and causing the data exchange to stop and no image will be displayed. 

Measuring the power output capability of several source devices under test from Pin 18 helps to better understand the chaotic nature of link failure in extended HDMI solutions. These tests revealed there is great variability in the available power, which isn’t too surprising considering there’s no incentive for device manufacturers to overbuild once they meet the HDMI standard requirements. Without testing each source, there’s no way to know how the power supply of an HDMI source will behave, which is time consuming and delicate. 

The Future of HDMI

These failures are just beginning to be examined and addressed. Currently, there are not many options to resolve them. 

To overcome voltage starvation, a voltage inserter can be used, which breaks the connection of Pin 18 at the source and substitutes an external power supply in place of the supply built into the device. However, a voltage inserter won’t cure all failures. Sometimes, active signal reinforcement is required. In those situations, an active in-line HDMI extender may be needed. In-line extenders may be powered from Pin 18 or from a dedicated device power supply. The challenge of in-line extenders is that they work best when positioned at some arbitrary mid-point between the source and the sink, which can be difficult in plenum or full conduit installations. 

Creating and building an optimal HDMI extension design requires analyzing and evaluating the capabilities of active devices, and anticipating the needs that will have to be met to work dependably with today’s content and with the 4K, 8K, wide-gamut color, HDR payloads of tomorrow. New extension devices are already making strides in this area. They require less power, exhibit less variation in power demands as mapped to payload complexity, and are more stable under all conditions.

In addition, the new HDMI 2.1 specification increases permissible maximum data rates from 18Gbps to 48Gbps. There is also a powered cable assembly (PCA) addendum to the HDMI 2.1 spec that calls for an auxiliary power supply for active cables. Under this new specification, advanced sources may deliver enough power for the active cables designed to support the enhanced bandwidth of next-generation connectivity, but not for powering external peripheral devices. This new HDMI standard relies on manufacturers disclosing standardized support capabilities, but keep in mind that most manufacturers aren’t even close to understanding the limitations of HPD bus power in their current product lineup. 

Creating dependable, predictable, and efficient solutions that support creative system design that anticipates the next generation of video system performance requires state-of-the-art testing techniques to analyze and evaluate all the contributions of the physical layer link.

Once in a blue moon, a new product, technology, or in this case, a specification comes along that is a game-changer. 

The HDMI 2.1 specification was released in November 2017. Many anticipated products such as displays, graphics cards, and cables are now available that incorporate HDMI 2.1 technology and enable the advanced features the specification offers. 

Many homes will experience the benefits of HDMI 2.1 features this holiday season through the new gaming consoles, Xbox Series X, and Sony PlayStation 5.

The Big Picture

The HDMI 2.1 specification provides several attractive benefits for highly demanding AV applications such as increased bandwidth up to 48Gbps, the ability to support 4K@120Hz, 8K@60Hz  and resolutions up to 10K. These are just a few. 

We explore three commercial applications and the HDMI 2.1 specification features that will have an impact, if not now, in the near future. 

Game On

According to the research firm, Arizton, the global esports market is expected to reach revenues of $3 billion by 2025, so it’s no surprise that colleges and universities have gotten in on the game. If you thought that only a handful of U.S. colleges have an esports program, think again. Marketing company Learfield IMG College manages multimedia rights, ticketing, corporate sponsorship, and advertising for more than 200 university athletic programs and conferences. 

Features of the HDMI 2.1 specification will ultimately change the gaming performance and could provide gaming athletes with an edge. It’s not going too far to state that nearly every HDMI 2.1 feature holds a benefit. 

Speed is everything in a competition. Several HDMI 2.1 features address speed. 

First, to realize the HDMI 2.1 features, 48Gbps bandwidth, the new Ultra High Speed HDMI® Cable is needed. Certified cables feature exceptionally low EMI (electro-magnetic interference), which reduces interference with nearby wireless devices. Keep in mind that certified cables are required to display the Ultra High Speed HDMI® Certification Label.

Becoming more widely available are TVs, monitors, and graphics cards enabled with HDMI 2.1 feature, Variable Refresh Rate (VRR). The result of the synchronization between the GPU and the display is that it reduces or eliminates lag, judder, and frame tearing for more fluid and better-detailed gameplay. “VRR allows the display to use whatever framerate the GPU is capable of delivering at the moment rather than being bound to the framerate defined under Extended Display Identification Data (EDID),” said AV/IT industry consulting solutions architect Paul Zielie, of AVIoIP. VRR enables a gaming source such as a console or computer to deliver video frames as fast as it can, which in many cases is slower than the normal static refresh rate. 

Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) enables the ideal latency setting to automatically be set, allowing for smooth, lag-free, and uninterrupted viewing and interactivity. In many cases, this is referred to as game mode, and it usually has to be set manually, which involves going through menus and settings before switching back to normal viewing. 

Quick Frame Transport (QFT) reduces latency for smoother no-lag gaming and real-time interactive virtual reality. QFT transports each frame at a higher data rate. “The display can the start processing the complete frame sooner decreasing ‘display latency,’” said Zielie.

When every millisecond counts, Quick Media Switching (QMS) eliminates the delay that can result in blank screens before content is displayed. QMS uses the VRR mechanism to eliminate the blackout period when all devices in the HDMI connection chain change video modes. As long as the resolution remains the same and only the frame rate changes, QMS will smoothly switch between frame rates.

Until recently, gaming athletes were relegated to using small gaming monitors. “The big thing will be the larger monitor sizes, higher frame rates, and the ability to have a more immersive experience,” said AV/IT industry consulting solutions architect Paul Zielie, of AVIoIP. “With being able to process more pixels, you will have a lot more information on your screen,” said Zielie. “Now, you can have the monitor further away, which is physically and ergonomically better.”

Although you need to pay attention to which HDMI 2.1 features the TV supports, today, TV manufacturers are producing 55- 80-plus-inch displays with HDMI 2.1, which support 8K@60Hz and 4K@120Hz. Available now, some 4K@120Hz displays are enabled with VRR and ALLM. A larger monitor can create an even more immersive and dynamic gaming station. And looking to win over the gamer’s desktop, TV manufacturers are offering smaller sizes that will compete with the PC monitor. 

Every detail matters in the video game. Many displays can support static and Dynamic HDR for enhanced game details with extended contrast range and expanded color spaces.

Audio is just as important as video in competitive gaming. HDMI 2.1 brings Enhanced Audio Return Channel (eARC), which supports up to 192kHz, 24-bit audio including support for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. Several games support these advanced audio formats. This feature will benefit the audience in attendance as well as those viewing the competition at home.

A Simplified Video Wall

Video wall applications might soon benefit from a simplified infrastructure to achieve higher resolutions at scale.

“When creating a giant LED wall, you essentially have a pixel space—not the actual number of pixels on the wall—but it’s the virtual number of pixels, and you decide what you need based on distance and viewing,” Zielie explained. To reach 4K, many video walls are driven by four 1080p signals, and to scale-up in size, several displays, output cards, and cables are needed. “And if you need 8K worth of pixels on the video wall, then you would either have to bring in four, 4K connections or 16, 1080p connections.” And 16 times output cards to bring in 1080p can be ridiculously expensive, not to mention cumbersome. “With HDMI 2.1, I’m piping them out at 8K; then I’ve got one-fourth or one-sixteenth of the number of physical output cards and HDMI cables that I have to deal with.”

This might be a bit in the future, but it’s something to consider when designing your next video wall installation. “If you’re going to have a lot of pixels that you have to move, the HDMI 2.1 spec will be a huge plus,” said Zielie.

Missing Link

“The HDMI 2.1 spec use case that I am excited about is in image analysis. We have had very high-resolution images for a long time, but displays which could display the entire image context at full resolution were prohibitively expensive. The high resolution and the accuracy in color and contrast brought by Dynamic HDR will greatly improve the image analysis experience,” said Zielie. Industries which rely on highly accurate images for analysis include medicine, energy, and science.

Detail and color accuracy are of the utmost importance in diagnostics, and that’s where the HDMI 2.1 feature, Dynamic HDR shines. Dynamic HDR support ensures every moment of a video is displayed at its ideal values for depth, detail, brightness, contrast, and a wider color gamut.

In addition to 4K and 8K, a range of other resolutions are supported, including 5K and 10K for commercial AV, industrial, and specialty usages. Also supported are the latest color spaces such as BT.2020 with 10 or more bits per color at higher frame rates.

Until recently, 8K displays were missing key technologies to take advantage of ultra-high-resolution imagery. 

In 2019 displays were released with the HDMI 2.1 specification, but there was still a missing link. In October 2020, HDMI 2.1 compliant cables became available, creating an 8K ecosystem between HDMI 2.1 enabled products. 

Updates

The HDMI Forum is continually updating and adding features to the HDMI 2.1 specification. A recent addition to HDMI 2.1 installation capabilities is HDMI Cable Power. With this feature, active HDMI Cables can be powered directly from the HDMI Connector, without attaching a separate power cable. This makes installing active wired or optical HDMI Cables as easy as using any HDMI Cable. Importantly, this feature must be supported by the source device; and all types of HDMI Cables may incorporate HDMI Cable Power.

With Crestron’s XiO Cloud management platform, Crestron is delivering the features needed to efficiently manage these assets at scale.

The What: Extron has begun shipping the USB‑C HD 101 interface, which converts USB‑C signals to HDMI enabling the integration of USB‑C sources into an existing AV system. 

The What Else: The USB‑C HD 101 includes an internal Extron Everlast power supply that uses USB Power Delivery to provide power and charging capabilities to a source laptop. For convenient mounting, it can be located within furniture or under a table using the included ZipClip 200 mounting accessory. The compact one-quarter rack width metal enclosure can also mount in an equipment rack with an optional rack mounting shelf.

The What: Atlona is expanding its lineup of HDMI extension solutions with the introduction of its Avance Series of HDBaseT extender kits. Building on the core functionality of the company’s UHD-EX family with additional integrator-friendly features, the new HDBaseT transmitter and receiver sets offer cost-effective and reliable solutions for extending 4K/UHD AV signals beyond the distance limitations of HDMI cabling.

The What Else: Four of the Avance kits transmit 4K/UHD 60Hz 4:2:0 video up to 130 feet (40 meters) or 1080p 60Hz video up to 230 feet (70 meters) over Cat-6A/7 twisted pair cable, while the fifth transmits 4K 60Hz 4:2:0 video over longer distances up to 330 feet (100 meters).

All Avance Series extender kits include features that bolster reliability and simplify deployment for integrators and installers. EDID filtering prevents extension of unsupported resolutions to increase the integrity of video transmission, while clock stretching improves interoperability with legacy and low-quality HDMI video sources. Integrated HDBaseT link test enables verification of cabling, termination, and link quality at the point of install.

A new feature with the Avance Series is bi-directional remote power, available on the AVA‑EX70C‑BP-KIT and AVA-EX100CE-BP-KIT. It enhances installation flexibility by providing a choice of whether the transmitter powers the receiver or vice versa. This allows the power supply to be located near either the source or the display, depending on available outlets.

The Bottom Line: The Avance Series kits provide flexible installation options for commercial applications ranging from conference rooms and classrooms to extended-distance video distribution.

Three of the Avance Series kits (AT-AVA-EX70-2PS-KIT, AVA-EX70C-BP-KIT and AVA-EX100CE-BP-KIT) are available immediately through Atlona’s network of authorized channel partners. The remaining kits will be available in late August.

The What: Key Digital has announced the KD-DA2x4G and KD-DA2x8G HDMI distribution amplifiers designed for digital signage applications.

The What Else: Featuring two HDMI inputs to four or eight respective HDBaseT outputs, the KD-DA2x4G and KD-DA2x8G allows signage players, computers, DVD players, or specialized content from two HDMI sources to be distributed to all four or eight connected displays. Displays only require a single Cat-5e/6 cable to each display from the distribution amplifier, and the included receiver is connected to the HDMI input of the monitor/display.

Content is supported up to Ultra HD/4K resolution at 4096x2160 or 3840x2160 24/25/30/60Hz at 4:4:4 (signals up to 18Gbps bandwidth). Long range signal extension of 4K/UHD signals achieves up to 76m (250ft) using Cat-5e/Cat-6, and 1080p content is extended up to 100m (328ft).

Key Digital offers a front-end switching selection on the KD-DA2x4G and KD-DA2x8G, which enables the distribution of identical content to all four or eight respective screens. All monitors connect via the included receive units. The receivers are powered by the KD-DA2x4G and KD-DA2x8G, and that power is carried over the HDBaseT run, a popular feature for AV integrators that sometimes do not have power outlets available behind displays.

Emphasized within the KD-DA2x4G and KD-DA2x8G are several designed to aid integrators and enhance the end-user experience. Auto switching automatically switches to or from a newly detected or disconnected source when enabled. Audio de-embedding enables the audio of the video content to also be fed into connected audio systems. Control pass-through enables IR or RS-232 signals from a professional control system to control connected monitors or be collected from the receiver unit and sent to the main equipment rack location for control of a selected source.

These products join a suite of Key Digital IP enabled products that are now app ready. Using the KD-App downloadable from the App Store, installers and users have a free way to switch inputs of the video distribution system using any iOS device. The KD-DA2x4G and KD-DA2x8G also support the Key Digital Management Pro Software (KDMS Pro), are Compass Control Pro ready, and are fully controllable by all IR, RS-232, and TCP/IP supported control systems via open API.

The KD-DA2x4G and KD-DA2x8G feature EDID Control with a built-in internal library of 15 EDID handshakes in addition to the ability to copy the EDID data from the display connected to output/display one. The Full Buffer System manages TMDS re-clocking / signal re-generation, HDCP source and display authentication, Hot Plug Management, and EDID Control handshake. Supported lossless compressed digital audio formats include Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD Master Audio, and Dolby Atmos.  

“HDBaseT technology is the go-to for reliable HDMI content extension without utilizing a network, and Key Digital leverages the power and reliability of HDBaseT to deliver it in a package designed with digital signage applications in mind on these splitter models,” said Jonathon Ferry, national training manger for Key Digital. “As opposed to signage systems that require a player or computer located at each and every display, we achieve cost-effective and uniform content distribution with exceptional distance performance using KD-DA2x4G and KD-DA2x8G. The Bottom Line: Designed for versatility, the KD-DA2x4G and KD-DA2x8G are well suited for digital signage applications in retail environments, transit hubs, public addressing, and large venues.

The transition to HDMI 2.0 was overwhelmingly driven by the urge to support higher resolution signals, notably 4K HDR 4:4:4 with a 600-megapixel flow rate. HDMI 2.0 is furthermore built to accommodate the carriage of 8K signals which, while still some years away, will eventually become an important part of the AV ecosystem. In the meantime, the industry eagerly awaits what HDMI 2.1 and future specs will offer for visual quality benefits.

Surprisingly, many cables on the market today are still limited to 1080p and 4K 4:2:0. On a short transmissions, the viewer might still receive and see a 4K image using these connections. In any scenario, a quick 10-to-20 second test will generally help determine the capabilities to carry HDMI 2.0/1.4/1.2 signals over each connection. The kind of tests you run will make a big difference as to how quickly the problems are solved, if at all.

There are a number of testing options on the market today, though many fall short when it comes to HDMI testing. Most HDMI testers focus on pattern testing versus physical layer testing. These pattern-oriented devices understand how to read a video stream, and run through a loop with the HDMI cable from transmission to receipt. These provide an appropriate comparison of the pixel levels through the loop, and confirm that the cables can carry HDMI 2.0, for example. 

This provides value to a degree, but there are additional physical layers in the mix that can adversely affect signal integrity. The wiring inside the HDMI cable can have a remarkable influence. In the short term, the video activated and transmitted through the cable will work fine, and the image will appear exact, even if there is damage on or underneath the shielding. 

Testing the cable itself will identify these more advanced issues. For example, one increasingly common problem is the reduction of shielded wire from within the cable. HDMI cables have 18 standard conductors for video, audio, Ethernet, and data moving over twisted pairs of wiring inside. Each of these wires should be shielded to maximize performance, which represents a 19th conductor.

Testing with a pattern generator will provide return information that suggest all 19 conductors are functioning properly. For short cable runs, this may happen even if there are issues with some of the conductors. The problems visibly surface on longer cable runs, and/or if there is a continuous signal moving through shorter cables for hours. For example, a 24/7-hour system with internal conductor shortcomings will gradually leak outside the wiring. This will inevitably cause signal degradation and ultimately affect performance.

There is no question that testing with an HDMI pattern generator will affect the overall depth and integrity of test. HDMI transmitters and receivers use equalization for error correction to improve the HDMI transmission. Not all the HDMI transmitters/receivers use the same equalization, which means that testing high-bandwidth HDMI signals with a pattern generator will often hide issues caused by the cable’s physical layer and associated wiring quality.

Modular Connections

This can feel like a complicated situation for tech managers that have no way to reliably troubleshoot the connections. Perhaps the integrator installed the system and verified integrity through a pattern generator, and everything checked out. 

Then, perhaps, the system remained dormant over a holiday week or between semesters after the integrator left the job site. The moment the system was turned on with the goal of passing 18Gpbs, the video drops surfaced. There is no HDBaseT extension—just a 3-foot cable connecting the source and sync devices. The HDMI cable simply cannot carry the high-bandwidth content between the two points. 

There is also the issue of overuse. Consider a meeting space where user after user is connecting to an HDMI cable. Most HDMI cables can accommodate up to 500 connections and disconnections, but the possibility of earlier damage certainly exists to do a more consistent flow of different users. Today’s more diverse, portable test devices will help installers verify signal presence and integrity through a variety of key parameters, including activation of links to transmit through the cable, even without a source or sink to receive the signal; the quality of transmission on the uplink (much higher bandwidth) and downlink; and improper terminations or crimps that cause faults through the twisted pair wires.

These and other problems can be identified and fixed on the spot, without the need to bring in a 4K display or projectors to confirm and evaluate the link. Special HDMI test modules are emerging to connect the tester directly to the wire, and return detailed physical layer readings to the handheld or a connected laptop. This allows the tech manager to immediately confirm whether the HDMI cable can reliably carry high-bandwidth signals over the long term by performing tests that transmit the video, verify terminations, and verify cable quality.

Attaching a professional HDMI module to both ends of the cable will provide instant access to crucial cable-quality data, including the presence of each of the 19 HDMI-standard conductors, with instant feedback on missing or defective wiring (called an HDMI Swipe Test); HDMI bandwidth requirements for signal carriage (called an HDMI compatibility test); confirmation if any of the cable’s conductors are shorted or missing; and gauge (AWG) measurements for each of the conductors.

A final important consideration is certification. This is something that tech managers cannot achieve with a common network analyzer, for example. Devices that can immediately offer a report that displays the minimum and maximum parameters, provide details on signal degradation and improvement, and what artifacts influenced the transmission provide major benefits to everyone involved. 

Manufacturers’ warranties are further protected through a certification report that verifies the performance of their equipment. Furthermore, if problems arise several months down the road, comparisons of the initial certification can be made with the current measurements to isolate problems and failures. For example, if someone ran electrical wiring for an air conditioner next to the AV system, that can be isolated as an outside interference problem.

The ability to accurately and thoroughly test each cable’s quality and performance is paramount to long-term viability of a new AV system. Using a modern HDMI test device will better assure the end user that their system can move high-quality, high-resolution signals with maximum integrity, while having better insight into a broader array of testing parameters.

No longer will HDMI cable buyers suffer from HDMI resolution and HDMI 2.1 feature support uncertainty or cable counterfeiting concerns.

At its CES 2020 press conference Monday morning, the HDMI Forum and the HDMI Licensing Administrator (HDMI LA) announced a mandatory certification program for all Ultra High Speed HDMI cables to ensure support for both 4K and 8K video, as well as 4K 120Hz, HDR, VRR, eARC, and all other HDMI 2.1 features, for both consumer and commercial cables. 

All certified cables of any length must pass this new certification testing at an HDMI Authorized Test Center. The new Ultra High Speed HDMI cable certification also includes testing to meet current EMI requirements to minimize wireless interference.

Once cables are certified, cable makers must affix an Ultra High Speed HDMI Certification Label to each package to let resellers and consumers know the certification status. The program also includes ongoing compliance audits to ensure cables meet specifications for their entire lifespan. 

“The Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is the only way to ensure all the features and capabilities of the HDMI 2.1 Specification are delivered from a source device to a display,” said David Glen of Advanced Micro Devices and president of the HDMI Forum. “The anti-counterfeit Ultra High Speed HDMI Certification Label and its scanning results provides a visible verification of certification that a product meets the HDMI Forum's requirements.”

The new HDMI cable certification program is an expansion of the current existing Premium Certification Program, and will be available sometime this quarter, with the first certifications issued before the end of June. HDMI Adopters will be informed when the certification program launches.

The What: Key Digital has launched a new line of plenum active optical HDMI fiber cables available in lengths from 10m (33 feet) to 100m (328 feet).

The What Else: This active optical copper hybrid cable series offers the latest in 4K resolutions with Ultra HD/4K support up to 4096x2160 or 3840x2160 50/60Hz at 4:4:4 with 18 Gbps bandwidth high speed performance for the latest HDMI video specifications. Key Digital Plenum Active Optical HDMI Fiber cables are directional with each head containing specific handling for optimal performance.

The Key Digital Plenum Active Optical HDMI Fiber cables include KD-AOCH33P, KD-AOCH49P, KD-AOCH66P, KD-AOCH98P, KD-AOCH131P, KD-AOCH164P, and KD-AOCH328P.

With 28 AWG measurement, Key Digital Plenum Active Optical HDMI Fiber cables are thin, flexible, and support a tighter bend radius than traditional HDMI. Key Digital’s Plenum Active Optical HDMI Fiber cables are HDCP 2.2 compliant and backward compatible with previous HDCP versions.

The Bottom Line: Unlike traditional copper HDMI cabling, the Key Digital active optical copper hybrid cables deliver full 4K/18Gbps signals at greater distances. The signal of the video and audio layer is not subjected to typical signal degradation due to sending the TMDS channel, the heaviest portion of HDMI signals, over optics. A minimal amount of copper wiring is included inside the cables to carry power and essential EDID handshaking information, HDCP authentication, and more.

A good bit of time has passed November 2017 release of HDMI 2.1, and while it’s likely to be a while longer before you’re using it to connect devices in your facility, things are certainly beginning to take off for the new highest standard. We caught up with Rob Tobias, CEO and President of HDMI Licensing Administrator, to drill down into the ways HDMI 2.1 will shape the pro AV industry in the coming years.

AV Technology: Can you give our readers a quick recap of the standard and what it enables?

Rob Tobias: It’s a big upgrade for HDMI and it adds a number of exciting new features. The headline is increase in bandwidth from 18Gbps to 48Gbps—that increases the resolution into the 8K realm, and with an optional digitally lossless compression called DSC it can even get to 10K.

So, that’s the feature everybody really looks at, but there’s a number of other things that are just as important. There’s Audio Return Channel (ARC)… that’s been upgraded to what’s called eARC, or Enhanced Audio Return Channel, and that adds all the newest sound formats—the high-bitrate formats from Dolby and DTS plus the object audio formats like Dolby Atmos. There’s also a number of features that enhance the picture experience, like Variable Rate Refresh and Auto Low Latency.

Do you see medical and simulation leading the way for its adoption in pro AV?

They’re going to be the early adopters for 8K. Samsung, TCL, Sony, LG, and Sharp all made a splash at CES talking about selling 8K to consumers. A lot of that is going to make its way into the pro AV space. Digital signage is really going to take advantage of it; you’re going to have really large displays. When people are close, it can pull up more information at a higher resolution, so we’re seeing a strong interest in the digital signage area.

Also, the medical field: they want higher resolutions for imaging and things like that, so we’ll see it there. And in aerospace, in certain applications that are pushing the envelope where they want to see higher resolutions for things like surveillance, I think we’ll see the push to 8K screens fairly quickly. In that case, HDMI 2.1 will become the mandatory interface to connect to the devices that are feeding the video images.

What’s new in HDMI 2.1 since CES?

Certain manufacturers have extended it into their 4K realm, but it can be HDMI 2.1 and have some of the other features. So, things like Variable Rate Refresh and eARC are 2.1 features, but they don’t also have the higher bandwidth, so they can be classified as 2.1 devices. We’re seeing most TV companies putting in eARC or Variable Rate Refresh, and Auto Low Latency to create advanced gaming. We’re seeing some 4K displays that are moving toward 120Hz refresh rate, and those are adding the higher bandwidth to get to 4K120.

Are any manufacturers of AV-over-IP equipment working on implementing HDMI 2.1 yet?

Not that I know of, or at least that have announced. The industry has caught up to 4K60 with 18Gbps, so this will be their next step, but it is a large step going from 18Gb to 48Gb, so it will take them a little time. But the industry is interested in getting there.

One area that’s going to really become important is the Active Optical Cables. So the challenge as you go to these higher speeds is that the length of cables just over copper becomes shorter. So, we’re going to see more and more active optical HDMI 2.1 cables. At CES, we were showing off some prototype designs from companies that are planning to take those to market, and they’re very bullish on the demand, and especially in the pro AV space, because longer cable lengths are more the norm than they would be in a consumer home environment.

Why should the pro AV community keep an eye on HDMI 2.1?

It’s coming at us like a freight train. The devices are here today, and more getting announced every day with HDMI 2.1, so it makes a lot of sense to stay up to speed with what these devices’ capabilities are and what the interface capabilities are. And ensuring, as you do installations, that they’re upgradable. Especially with this new cable that has been designed for higher performance.

So today, maybe you’re putting in a 4K60 environment. But if you envision that you’re going to have to upgrade those displays to 8K, then you’re going to have to redo the cabling infrastructure. So it’s good to learn about it today, it’s good to plan for the future.

The What: ZeeVee (Stand 10-S130) has introduced a plugin module to enable Ethernet switches to integrate HDMI connectivity for video sources, including the capacity to distribute uncompressed 4K/UHD and HDR content.  

The What Else: Utilizing ZeeVee ZyPer4K technology in conjunction with the 96-port NETGEAR 10G M4300-96X Modular Managed Ethernet switch, the new ZeeVee module benefits integrators and end users by enabling increased options for customization, reducing cost, lowering power consumption, and simplifying installation and deployment of large IP-based video networks.

The new ZeeVee ZyPer4K HDMI Module, developed in collaboration with NETGEAR and the SDVoE Alliance, plugs into the NETGEAR switch chassis, providing a robust solution for industrial, commercial, and residential applications. Each ZeeVee module accommodates up to four HDMI sources; multiple modules may be used in the same switch. The NETGEAR switch requires just two units of rack space, presenting a compact and efficient solution to customers. 

“We are proud to continue our close relationship with NETGEAR and the SDVoE Alliance to, for the first time, enable HDMI source connectivity to an Ethernet switch,” said Bob Michaels, CEO, ZeeVee. “This combination of IT and AV at the integrated product level, rather than purely at the infrastructure level, will promote the wider adoption of next generation communications systems.”

“NETGEAR sees the product pairing of our switch and the ZeeVee ZyPer4K HDMI Module as a significant transformation of the AVoIP experience,” said Richard Jonker, vice president of SMB product line management for NETGEAR. “It not only more firmly solidifies the much-talked-about convergence between AV and IT, but makes these systems easier to install and more cost-effective than ever before.”

As with other SDVoE components, the switch accommodates symmetric input/output configurations such as 48x48, as well as asymmetric solutions such as 10x86, 24x72, etc. The modular design of the switch allows reconfiguration of inputs and outputs should system requirements change.

“While we see the matrix switch as obsolete, its customizability is a valuable feature we can learn from as we move to a standards-based, interoperable Ethernet infrastructure for AV distribution,” said Justin Kennington, SDVoE Alliance president. “NETGEAR took the first step by creating the affordable modular Ethernet switch, and we are not surprised that SDVoE Alliance co-founder ZeeVee added its pro AV expertise to jump to the forefront of the exciting new product category.”

The Bottom Line: The ZeeVee ZyPer4K HDMI Module works natively with the NETGEAR M4300-96X Modular Managed Switch, which is preconfigured for true AV and multicast Zero Touch network configuration. It also allows designers, integrators, or users to select the combination of HDMI, copper, PoE+, and fiber M4300-96X port expansion cards that suit system requirements, connect cables from sources or decoder-equipped displays, and switch on the power.

The ZyPer4K HDMI Module will be available from ZeeVee in Summer 2019. ZeeVee, an authorized NETGEAR reseller, already offers the NETGEAR M4300-96X. 

The What: Extron has begun shipping the HD Pro Plenum Series of active, hybrid optical-copper cables for high-speed transmission of HDMI digital video and audio signals. They support data rates up to 18Gbps, video resolutions up to 4K60 at 4:4:4, HDR, EDID, HDCP, and CEC, as well as all HDMI audio formats.

The What Else: These active cables are unidirectional and draw only nominal power from the connected HDMI source device. Each cable is 0.16 inches (4 mm) in diameter and offers a narrow bend radius, for easier installation and higher performance. Providing the benefits of fiber optics with the simplicity of traditional copper cable, the HD Pro Plenum Series supports 4K60 video signals over long distances up to 300 feet (91.4 meters).

"Our customers wanted a high-performance solution for sending 4K/60 signals with full 4:4:4 color sampling over extended distances that didn't require transmitters and receivers for every endpoint," said Casey Hall, vice president of worldwide sales and marketing for Extron. "HD Pro Plenum Series cables are a convenient, high-performance solution that easily supports the 18Gbps data rate required to transport 4K60 video and maintain uncompromised signal quality."

The Bottom Line: The HD Pro Plenum Series uses glass multimode fiber, which allows for use in high-interference environments such as data centers and manufacturing facilities. Built-in active circuitry converts the incoming electrical signal into an optical signal on one end and back into an electrical signal on the other. Non-bandwidth intensive or low-speed signals are carried on the integrated copper wires, including EDID, HDCP, CEC, and 5V power. HD Pro Plenum Series cables are designed to provide a combination of performance and price for applications that require direct, long-distance signal connections.

The What: Magewell has begun shipping a pair of feature-rich models in its new Pro Convert family of standalone IP encoders: the recently introduced Pro Convert HDMI 4K Plus, and a previously unannounced 1080p counterpart.

 The What Else: The latest expansion of the Pro Convert family offers users and systems integrators a flexible choice of input connectivity and encoding resolution. The Pro Convert HDMI 4K Plus transforms sources up to 4K Ultra HD at full 60 frames per second via an HDMI 2.0 input interface, while the newly unveiled Pro Convert HDMI Plus encodes HDMI source signals into full-bandwidth NDI streams up to 1080p60 HD. The Pro Convert HDMI Plus can also accept a 4Kp60 HDMI input signal, down-converting it automatically to HD for encoding.

A third model, the Pro Convert SDI 4K Plus, converts 6G-SDI signals up to 4K at 30 fps into NDI streams. It is slated to ship early in 2019.

All Pro Convert models feature extremely low latency and are plug-and-play, with automatic input format detection and DHCP-based network configuration, eliminating the need for manual setup. For users wanting greater control of the conversion process and the features of the Pro Convert devices, a browser-based interface provides access to status monitoring, advanced settings, and FPGA-based video processing including up/down/cross-conversion, de-interlacing, and image adjustments.

Power for the compact Pro Convert devices can be supplied via Power over Ethernet (PoE) or the included power adapter. Loop-through connectivity on each unit allows the input signal to be sent simultaneously to additional displays or equipment without external splitters or routers, enabling sources to be easily used in new IP workflows without disrupting existing video infrastructures.

Additional features for live production applications include a 1/4"-20 thread for standard camera-mounting accessories, preview and program tally lights, and NDI-based PTZ camera control. An included breakout cable allows extension of the tally lights and PTZ control interface for increased connection flexibility.

The Bottom Line: Designed to enable users to bring traditional HDMI video signals into live, IP-based production and AV infrastructures using NewTek's NDI technology, the two converters will be showcased alongside other Magewell innovations in stand 8-G430 at the upcoming ISE 2019 exhibition in Amsterdam.

The What: tvONE is now shipping the MX-65xx Matrix Switcher series, introduced first at InfoComm 2018. The series includes MX-6588 (4K60 8x8 HDMI 2.0 Matrix), MX-6584 (4K60 8x4 HDMI 2.0 Matrix), and MX-6544 (4K60 4x4 HDMI 2.0 Matrix).

The What Else: The MX-65xx Matrix Switcher series is designed to allow the distribution of HDMI 2.0 (with HDCP) sources to multiple display devices independently or all at the same time using an intuitive front panel, infrared remote control, the company’s control software, MX-tools, or use the simple API with a third-party controller. It is HDCP 2.2 compliant and provides full support for 4K/2K60 4:4:4 8-bit and 10-bit processing for deep color rendition. 3D signals are also supported. Audio includes 7.1 audio capability including DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD.

The What: MuxLab has introduced its next-generation HDMI-over-IP H.264/H.265 PoE Transmitter, 4K30 (model 500763), which is designed to bring together many AV sources with various displays on the same IP infrastructure. 

The What Else: By connecting to an Ethernet switch, users can create simple distributions of matrixed displays on up to massive video walls with multi views. Low bandwidth requirements allow for streaming AV over a local network, Wi-Fi, and the internet. This solution features high image quality with less than 200ms latency in low latency mode with H.265. Because the scope of the system is limited only by network bandwidth, potentially hundreds of sources and displays can be integrated into the same system for the ultimate in scalability.

Each of MuxLab’s Transmitters can connect AV equipment to a network from up to 100 meters in distance using a standard Cat-5e/6. Once on the network, they work with MuxLab’s H.264/H.265 Receivers (model 500762) to deliver content to one, a few, or many displays. Video is upscaled to 4K60 from 1080p60 or 4K30. Two-channel audio is embedded and delivered alongside HDMI to the display or extracted at the receiver. PoE is supported on both the transmitters and receivers, eliminating power supplies at local and remote locations.

The Bottom Line: When used with MuxLab’s ProDigital Network Controller (model 500811), every piece of equipment can be set up, managed, accessed, and controlled locally or remotely from any laptop, smartphone, or tablet. The Bottom Line: For complete integration for meeting rooms, the HDVS-SC-RX and an HDVS-200 or Omega Series transmitter together provide a compact yet integrated solution with automatic input selection, HDBaseT extension, display control capabilities, room control, audio de-embedding, and volume control. For larger presentation applications, the HDVS-SC-RX is well suited for extending AV connectivity from an Atlona HDBaseT-equipped switcher to a remote display or projector. Content can be upscaled, downscaled, or delivered with scaling bypassed, while providing high-quality imagery.

The What: FSR has issued a firmware upgrade for its DV-HSW-21A and DV-MFSW-21A 2X1 HDMI switchers that can make them FIFO or LIFO with a simple serial command.

The What Else: The DV-HSW-21A is a 2X1 HDMI Switcher that supports up to 4K x 2K @ 30Hz, is HDMI 1.4 and HDCP compliant, and features embedded audio support. The DV-MFSW-21A 2X1 Switcher includes one HDMI and one VGA (HD-15) Input and HDMI output and also supports resolutions up to 4K x 2K @ 30Hz. The VGA (HD-15) supports resolutions up to 1920 x 1200 @60Hz and features analog video converted to HDMI with embedded audio. It is also HDMI 1.4 and HDCP compliant.

The Bottom Line: The new units with the firmware upgrade are now shipping.

The What: tvONE has introduced the 1T-SX-654 auto switcher with four HDMI video inputs and one HDMI output.

The What Else: This ultra-thin 4x1 HDMI 2.0 switcher supports video resolution up to 4Kx2K@60Hz 4:4:4: HDR and provides 18Gbps of high bandwidth.

The switcher includes an auto-switch control mode, which automatically switches to an HDMI input as soon as a new source is connected. Additional control options include control via the front panel source button, RS-232 or IR (remote control included).

The Bottom Line: Audio functionality includes multi-channel support, de-embedded digital stereo audio to provide an analog output, or an audio return channel (ARC) for transmitting audio back to the HDMI input from the connected display.

The What: MuxLab has launched the HDMI/RS232 Extender Kit with ARC, HDBT, UHD-4K, offering delivery of 4K video in the HDMI 2.0 format from source to display.

The What Else: Source and display can be connected remotely at resolutions up to 4K at 30Hz or 4K at 60Hz (4:2:0) resolution, and longer distances for resolutions up to 1080p at 60Hz. Transmitter and receiver connect the source to the display using one CAT5e/6 cable.

The receiver can accept and return audio via both the HDMI and TosLink ports, and audio can be sent via the transmitter using the TosLink port. RS232 and Bi-directional IR enables remote control of end devices.

The Bottom Line: The Extender allows audio to be routed back to a receiver at the source side, which can connect directly to speakers. For intimate spaces and residential applications, it enables more immersive 4K viewing.

MuxLab’s HDMI/RS232 Extender Kit with ARC, HDBT, UHD-4K will begin shipping in Q4 2018.

The What: Nortek Security & Control (NSC) is now shipping the Gefen 4K Ultra HD Multi-Format 4x1 Scaler with Auto-Switching and HDMI/HDBaseT Outputs (EXT-4K300A-MF-41-HBTLS).

The What Else: The 4x1 Switcher and its recommended receiver (the EXT-UHDA-HBTL-RX, sold separately) use the Gefen implementation of HDBaseT technology to extend the HDMI output of the switcher up to 230 feet/70 meters at 1080p and up to 130 feet/40 meters at 4K, using a single Cat-5 cable.

The EXT-4K300A-MF-41-HBTLS has four inputs (HDMI, DisplayPort, DVI, and VGA) to accommodate most commonly used presentation sources, and automatic-switching to allow hands-off source selection by simply connecting a device.

The What: tvONE is shipping the Magenta MG-CT-612 HD-One ultra-thin Receiver, which provides HDMI 4K extension and power over HDBT up to 130ft (40m) and HD extension up to 230ft (70m).

The What Else: The MG-CT-612 Receiver offers Power over HDBaseT (PoH) installation with the MG-WP-611 series wall plates, which enable switching and extension for HDMI & VGA signals. The receiver’s ultra-thin form factor, just 16mm thick, allows the unit to be mounted easily behind any monitor.

The What: Comprehensive Connectivity Company has launched the CHE-HDF18G01 - Pro AV/IT HDMI 18G Fiber Extender TX/RX Kit for distribution up to 3300 feet, featuring a compact design for flexible installation.

The What Else: Comprehensive’s CHE-HDF18G01 HDMI over fiber extender supports 18G, resolutions up to 4K60, and is HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 compliant. This extender is designed to convert a full HDMI signal to a fiber signal, which can be transmitted over 3,300 feet using single-mode fiber cable or 1,000 feet over multi-mode fiber cable. The HDR-M2C-QUAD is now shipping and is backed by Atlona’s award-winning 10-year limited product warranty and customer support services.

The What: Hall Research has introduced the HSM-88-4K compact 1U cross-point video switch. The matrix supports HDMI resolutions up to 4K and also supports HDCP 2.2, deep-color video, PCM, Dolby, DTS, and HD audio standards.

The What Else: Users are able to save and recall multiple video routing configurations as "Presets". The matrix includes a two-line LCD on its front panel in order to display the current video routing and to facilitate creating or recalling Presets. All input and output buttons are back-lit and users can initiate "ties" starting from input or the output buttons for maximum flexibility. Individual video outputs can also be blanked, a feature that can be beneficial during certain presentations.

The design of the HSM-88-4K also extends to its control command set. Commands use simple English syntax and a host of commands are provided for monitoring and controlling all aspects of the product's function. Both IP/Telnet and RS-232 ports are included. The matrix also ships with an IR remote control that can be used to route video.

Intelligent EDID management allows users to specify fixed EDIDs for each input, but the matrix can also calculate EDID for each input intelligently based on the capabilities of the connected outputs. This will ensure that all outputs will have a video, and the video will be at the highest resolution possible. For example, if an input is routed to two outputs where one supports 4K video but the other supports 1080p, the matrix uses an EDID with 1080p forcing the source to output 1080p, but if all routed outputs support 4K, the matrix will automatically use 4K as the native resolution in its EDID.

The Bottom Line: The HSM-88-4K is ideal for conference rooms, multimedia presentations, digital signage, houses of worship, and many other applications. It has a suggested list price of $2450 and is available from stock.

The What: tvONE, a designer and manufacturer of video and multimedia processing equipment, has announced the shipment of the HD-One wall plate transmitter series, consisting of the MG-WP-611-US and MG-WP-611-EU.

The What Else: Available in regionally specific form factors, the MG-WP-611-US and MG-WP-611-EU are easily powered by a local power supply or the MG-CT-612 Receiver (coming soon) with integrated Power over HDBaseT (PoH). The What: MuxLab has introduced two IP-based Uncompressed Gateway Converters for SDI and HDMI. Both solutions are designed to support the integration of AV equipment in commercial broadcast systems such as in TV stations and studio facilities.

The What Else: The HDMI 2.0/ST2110 over IP Uncompressed Gateway Converter (model 500774) gives broadcasters the ability to deliver uncompressed HDMI 2.0 signals throughout the studio at 4K resolutions. Users can opt to connect equipment to a local 10Gb Ethernet network in which nearly unlimited sources and displays can be matrixed together to enable point to multipoint and multipoint to multipoint connections.

Connections to the local 10Gb Ethernet network is accomplished via multimode fiber at up to 1,300 feet (400m) in distance from the Ethernet switch using OM4 fiber. Alternatively, users can also connect one AV source to one display in a point-to-point arrangement at up to 1,300 feet (400m) in distance using one duplex multimode OM4 fiber with LC connectors. Both methods support uncompressed 4K resolutions at 60Hz. External audio can be inserted at the source and extracted at the display to accompany the video. One 1Gb Ethernet switch port is provided for the connection of additional network devices, as well an RS-232 port for the remote control of end devices.

The 3G-SDI/ST2110 over IP Uncompressed Gateway Converter (model 500767) connects HD- and 3G-SDI sources and displays to a local 10Gb Ethernet network, enabling the ability to send multiple video sources to multiple displays in nearly any combination. Users can also opt to install this system in the traditional point-to-point way in which one AV source is delivered to one display using Cat-5e/6 cable from up to 100 feet (30m) in distance or by using duplex multimode fiber cable at up to 1,300 feet (400m) in distance. All methods of signal extension support uncompressed resolutions up to 1080p resolution at 60Hz. A 1Gb Ethernet switch allows the connection of additional network devices, and an RS-232 port allows for the remote control of end devices.

The Bottom Line: Both Gateway Converters support SMPTE ST-2110. When riding on an IP infrastructure, the 3G-SDI/ST2110 over IP Uncompressed Gateway Converter can be accessed and controlled by MuxLab’s Pro Digital Network Controller (model 500811), which simplifies the configuration of IP-based systems and gives complete access from any smartphone, tablet, or third-party control system. Furthermore, the HDMI 2.0/ST2110 over IP Uncompressed Gateway Converter supports NMOS for third-party management. Both models will begin shipping in Q3 2018.

In addition to AV signals, KD-SX440WP extends IR and RS-232 for controlling remotely located equipment. The wall-plate unit (Tx) fits in a standard US dual-gang box and is powered by the Rx unit for convenient installation.
