Extron has released its DTP3 T 322 D, a two-input wallplate transmitter that sends USB-C and HDMI video, USB data, embedded audio, power, and control up to 330 feet (100 meters) over a shielded CAT 6A cable. It can provide up to 100 watts of USB-C power delivery to charge the connected device when used with the Extron UPI 100 Power Inserter.

[Sustainability: How Far Has Pro AV Come?]

The DTP3 T 322 D supports video resolutions up to 4K/60 at 4:4:4 and is compliant with HDCP 2.3. All supported video signals are transported uncompressed to ensure maximum image quality and minimal latency. Integrator-friendly features include EDID Minder, automatic input switching, remote power capability, and bidirectional RS-232 extension for AV device control.

“The DTP3 T 322 D meets the need for more USB-C solutions that support video, data, and device charging over one cable,” said Casey Hall, chief marketing officer for Extron. “Its stylish wallplate form factor complements any decor while delivering HDMI and USB-C connectivity exactly where you need it.”

The transmitter supports long-distance transmission of HDMI 2.0b signals at data rates up to 18 Gbps, including HDR, Deep Color, 3D, and embedded HD lossless audio formats. Continuous DDC communication ensures reliable EDID and HDCP exchange between source and display for optimal system performance. The two-gang decorator-style wallplate design allows HDMI and USB-C input connections to be installed in walls, tables, lecterns, credenzas, and floor boxes.

Sustainability is not a new innovation in Pro AV. The industry has long strived to reduce its carbon footprint for a greener tomorrow, whether that be replacing packaging to more biodegradable products or advancing the longevity and recyclability of hardware solutions. There have been major advances in just a few years, but there is much work to be done.

Recently, SAVe has been front and center in the Pro AV sustainability revolution. Since its founding in 2022, the nonprofit has seen progress within the AV industry toward meeting the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. "But let’s be honest," said Tim Alevizos, SAVe board member and co-chair of marketing and PR, "the scope of the challenge we’re facing is gigantic. If the 2030 SDGs are to be achieved, it’s going to take a concerted global effort that goes well beyond what we can achieve in the AV sector."

Whether it is events like the SAVe 2026 Global Conference (coming this October) or manufacturers making impactful changes, SAVe applauds incremental progress and efforts to reduce e-waste and longevity of products. However, as Alevizos explained, SAVe is a catalyst for change on a larger scale.

"To fulfill our mission, we need more volunteers—and, specifically, more leaders—to step up for the sake of future generations and, indeed, the planet itself," he noted. "Our advice is for people in our industry, and far outside it, to take action as individuals and as organizations, but not to step there: We need to act collectively in a broader sense, and that requires leaders who can inspire, educate, unite, and organize people and resources to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development."

Here is how some companies are paving the way for reaching these goals.

'Ecofficient' and Paper Packaging

Extron has made sustainability a major focal point. Its Ecofficient initiative, developed in response to the sunsetting of the ENERGY STAR program for commercial AV devices, spotlights energy-efficient excellence across its entire AV product portfolio. It signals Extron’s ongoing commitment to reducing power consumption, lowering operating costs, and supporting global sustainability goals.

“At Extron, we’ve always believed that sustainability and performance go hand in hand," said Joe da Silva, VP of marketing, Extron. "Opportunities for sustainability and conservation are evaluated at every step of a product’s life, from power supply designs leveraging GaN [gallium nitrade] technology for cooler and more efficient operation, to shipping materials optimized for recyclability, to our product recycling program that minimizes landfill waste."

One way to reduce Pro AV's environmental footprint is about how the technology is delivered. Switching to eco-friendly packaging is big step, reducing shipping costs and providing much greener transport.

Lightware Visual Engineering, which has already reduced its carbon footprint by designing and manufacturing its solutions in a centralized headquarters, switched to all-paper packaging in the next step of its ESG strategy. The biodegradable, recyclable paper-only packaging will be used for Taurus UCX, Taurus TPX, Taurus TPN, OPTX, and OPTN products. Packaging is still secure, yet it offers plenty of benefits for a greener tomorrow.

Sustainable and Socially Responsible

Sustainability has long been a part of the PPDS philosophy. The display manufacturer was eco-conscious before it was trendy in Pro AV. PPDS focuses on low-energy solutions with long-lasting shelf life. For example, PPDS e-paper solutions, like the Philips Tableaux, save energy and maximize technology uses, further reducing a carbon footprint.

As the saying goes, the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree.

Last August, TPV Technology, the parent company behind PPDS as well as TP Vision, MMD Monitors and Displays, and AOC, earned the EcoVadis Platinum Medal. Founded in 2007, EcoVadis provides business ratings, having screened more than three million companies across 185 countries, awarding bronze, silver, gold, or platinum honors. The platinum recognition places TPV Technology in the top 1% globally as one of the most sustainable and socially responsible manufacturers in Pro AV.

Not long ago, Kinly's net-zero targets were validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This achievement—which, per Kinly, made it the first global systems integrator to have the honor—validates the work the company has done towards achieving "net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain by 2050; reducing absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 54.6% by 2033 from a 2023 base year, as well as scope 3 GHG emissions by 61.1% per EUR value added within the same timeframe," according to a recent release.

It isn't simply big displays and packaging that are focused on enhancing the carbon footprint. Last summer, L-Acoustics invested in French-based MagREEsource. Per the company's report on the partnership, it introduces a "breakthrough circular economy model for the professional audio industry" that focuses on magnet recycling and manufacturing technology.

There are many hands in the pot helping to stir a greener future in Pro AV. And that is exactly what SAVe's goal continues to be. "It won’t be easy," Alevizos admitted. "Systemic change is required. But there is strength in numbers, and we have the numbers on our side to create the groundswell necessary to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. We won’t be satisfied until the potential of our movement for change is fully realized."

Extron has unveiled its new TLS 835M and TLS 1035M scheduling panels. The TLS 835M and TLS 1035M support simple installation and are designed for enterprise-grade security and performance. The high-resolution capacitive IPS touchscreens with optically bonded Gorilla® Glass lens ensure enhanced brightness, wide viewing angles, and precise touch accuracy, while integrated red and green LED indicators provide clear, at-a-glance room status. Finally, PoE combines power and data into one cable, minimizing cable clutter and streamlining installation.

The University of Tennessee at Martin (UT Martin) transformed an underutilized campus computer store into a modernized esports room, creating a flexible, budget-conscious environment to support increasing educational interest in both casual gaming and competitive esports. To meet space and funding constraints while delivering strong AV infrastructure, UT Martin implemented an Extron-based system that routes gameplay and other content to large displays around the room and supports versatile streaming and room operation.

“This room is just the beginning,” said Jace Williams, AV system administrator at the university. “We are starting with an esports club with hopes to someday soon grow it into an esports team. The interest is already here and it’s an exciting time to be a part of this growing program.”

At the core of the installation is an Extron DTP CrossPoint 108 4K presentation matrix switcher, selected as the backbone for routing signals from multiple PCs, gaming consoles, and streaming setups to outputs throughout the room. An Extron TLP Pro 1220TG TouchLink Pro touchpanel works in conjunction with the matrix switcher's integrated control processor to provide intuitive AV system control. The system also includes a DTP2 R 211 Receiver with audio de-embedding. An Extron MGP 641 xi Multi-Window Processor is planned for integration as the system evolves, supporting an esports space designed for scalability.

Bell Bank is one of the largest family-owned banks in the United States, built on a culture of connection and community. Bell Tower, the company’s Fargo, North Dakota headquarters, is a 14-story, 105,000-square-foot facility that serves as the hub for the institution. As such, the Town Hall section of the corporate headquarters needed to reflect that central focus with a space that went beyond the traditional corporate model of a boardroom or meeting room.

Bell Bank envisioned a dynamic, multi-functional environment serving as a collaborative center for meetings and training sessions that can then transition seamlessly into a professional production space for high-level events such as receptions, presentations, and more.

To bring this vision to life, Bell Bank turned to FARBER Sound – Venue Transformation, leveraging a long-standing partnership built on a deep understanding of the bank’s operational culture. A project of this scope demanded a proven power control foundation. For FARBER, that meant incorporating LynTec into the project.

A Core Challenge

The core challenge was significant: the Town Hall needed to function simultaneously as a multi-purpose event space and a broadcast-capable facility. That dual mandate required integrating a wide range of disparate audio, video, and lighting (AVL) systems spanning everyday presentation gear, a professional mixing console and stage box network, multi-camera 4K capable video production infrastructure, architectural lighting, and a full complement of event and entertainment lighting fixtures. Each system category carries its own power requirements, startup dependencies, and operational profiles. The task was to unify all of those elements under a single, intelligent power control solution that could adapt automatically to whatever mode the room needed to be in, without placing the burden of technical management on the bank’s staff.

To address this, FARBER’s system designer, Cory Deming, specified a LynTec RPC-384 power control panel as the backbone of the entire AVL system. The RPC-384 manages sequenced power distribution across all AVL subsystems, ensuring every component powers on and off in the correct order based on the active room configuration. “We have been using LynTec products for decades and were confident this would be the correct product to handle the Town Hall requirements,” Deming said.

Beyond on-site performance, the RPC-384 also enables FARBER’s team to monitor system performance and handle the majority of troubleshooting remotely from their headquarters in Plymouth, Minnesota, reducing the need for on-site service calls and providing Bell Bank with a responsive support infrastructure.

Physical flexibility was built into every layer of the design as well: the stage was engineered in full, half, and quarter configurations, complete with an ADA-accessible ramp, with the entire assembly storable out of sight when not in use. The Chauvet Pro and GLP moving-head lighting fixtures can be repositioned into preset looks saved to the control system and executed on any touch panel in the room, eliminating the need for ladders or manual repositioning between events.

Working in close collaboration with the architectural team, Farber integrated multi-angled acoustic ceiling clouds to optimize sound diffusion while contributing to the visual identity of the space. A proscenium design and curtain system enable dynamic theatrical reveals and adaptable performance configurations, giving the room a range of presentation modes that would feel at home in a professional venue. Detailed EASE acoustic modeling guided targeted treatments to parallel walls and other reflective surfaces, improving speech intelligibility across all event types. The result is a room where under-the-hood complexity stays invisible, and the experience remains focused on the content.

“Bell Bank needed a space that could do two very different jobs without feeling like either one was a compromise," said Dave Farber, owner of FARBER. "The only way to make that work is to get the power architecture right from the start. Our experience working with LynTec products in other projects gave us the confidence that the RPC could handle an installation this complex.”

A Unified Solution

The RPC-384 provides the unified power control foundation that makes the dual-purpose room architecture practical. The production backbone it manages includes a Yamaha DM7-EX digital mixing console, a 20Gbit redundant fiber network supporting AVoIP, Dante, GreenGO, HiQnet, NDI, and sACN protocols, and a 12G SDI video infrastructure anchored by Panasonic 4K PTZ cameras, a FOR-A production switcher, and AJA matrix routing. The architectural and event lighting system centers on Chauvet Pro and GLP moving-head fixtures and wash units, all addressable and positionable from the room’s touch panels. The front-end interface throughout is an Extron control system, providing staff with a clean, intuitive surface for day-to-day operation regardless of what is running beneath it.

By interfacing the Extron control system directly with the LynTec RPC-384, FARBER turned power management into a background function. When a staff member taps a touch panel to configure the room, the RPC-384 sequences power to the appropriate equipment automatically. A simple presentation mode enables only the necessary audio and video components. A full Town Hall production spins up the complete system, including the control booth, only when dedicated technicians are on-site. Bank staff operate a professional-grade venue confidently, regardless of their technical background.

Introducing the new Extron DTP3 CrossPoint 42 USB. This compact 4x2 matrix switcher supports 10 Gbps data at the local USB-C host port and four-port hub, plus host switching and USB 2 data extension. It features USB-C and HDMI inputs, HDMI outputs, plus a DTP3 output for extending video, audio, data, and control signals up to 330 feet (100 meters) over a shielded CAT 6A cable. Additional advanced capabilities include 100-watt USB-C charging, audio de-embedding, seamless transition effects, and logo keying. The switcher can also access remote USB devices connected to a DTP3 R 331 receiver. Extron also released its new XTP II 8K Fiber Series. Four new products are now available:

• XTP II FT 402 8K: Fiber optic transmitters for HDMI and DisplayPort
• XTP II FR 401 8K: Fiber optic receivers with local HDMI input
• XTP II CP 4i F 8K: Input boards with assignable XTP Fiber or HDMI inputs
• XTP II CP 4o SF 8K: Output boards with scaled fiber and local, unscaled HDMI outputs

These new boards leverage the 50 Gbps backplane of XTP II CrossPoint Series matrix switchers. The Extron XTP II 8K Fiber Series extends video, audio, bidirectional control, and 1 Gbps Ethernet over fiber optic cable. Each product is HDCP 2.3 compliant and supports HDMI 2.1 specification features that include data rates up to 40.1 Gbps, HDR, Deep Color up to 12-bit, 3D, and HD lossless audio formats. The XTP endpoints utilize two Extron technologies: EDID Minder and Key Minder. EDID Minder automatically manages EDID communication between sources and display devices. For signals with protected content, Key Minder authenticates and maintains continuous HDCP encryption between input and output devices. Highlands Development Center, part of Viet Thai International, one of Vietnam’s largest retail chain business groups and the parent company of Highlands Coffee, recently upgraded the AV systems in its Thu Duc City office in Ho Chi Minh City. The project modernized three training rooms and two meeting spaces to improve collaboration and make instruction easier. AV integrator Duy Hoa Phat Corporation designed and installed the new system, which uses Extron switching, audio processing, control, and room scheduling tools to support flexible room setups and simple, efficient operation for everyone.

[Day 2 AV/IT Interoperability: Extron]

“Our goal was to deliver a seamless AV experience that would support both the operational needs and long-term vision of Highlands Coffee," said Tran Chu Thuan, chief executive officer, Duy Hoa Phat Corporation. "Extron’s integrated solutions gave us the performance, reliability, and control flexibility we needed to make that possible.”

Highlands Development Center identified several core requirements. The company needed an advanced AV system with flexible control for training spaces, including the ability to seamlessly combine or divide rooms. Trainers required a straightforward interface to adjust audio, video, and microphone settings without technical support. For the third-floor meeting rooms, the priority was integration with room scheduling software to display real-time availability and facilitate on-the-spot bookings through user-friendly interfaces. Cost-efficiency, reliability, and ease of use were essential across all spaces, making Extron technologies a strategic match for the project.

On the second floor, three training rooms now share a centralized AV system that supports easy source switching, clear audio, and flexible room setups. The training facility includes two adaptable rooms and a dedicated cashier training room, all connected to a centralized AV system. Video routing is handled by the Extron DXP 88 HD 4K PLUSmatrix switcher, supporting 4K/60 video and HDCP 2.3 compliance. Audio processing is provided by the DMP 128 Plus C AT, a 12x8 ProDSP digital matrix processor featuring Acoustic Echo Cancellation and Dante audio networking. HDMI sources pass through an HAE 100 4K Plus audio de-embedder, extracting audio for delivery to the DSP system. System control is centralized via the IPCP Pro 350 xi control processor, which coordinates signal switching, audio settings, and room mode transitions. Each space includes a wall-mounted TLP Pro 725M TouchLink Pro touchpanel, providing direct control over AV functions, microphone levels, and room combinations through an intuitive interface.

The third floor adds room scheduling displays that show real-time availability and make booking more efficient, along with streamlined in-room audio control. Outside each meeting room, a TLS 725M 7-inch Room Scheduling Panel clearly presents room status, bookings, and availability. These panels are configured using Extron Room Agent software, allowing quick deployment without the need for intermediate servers or custom programming. Inside the meeting rooms, local audio processing is handled by the DMP 64 Plus C AT, a compact 6x4 DSP with AEC and Dante.

Together, these upgrades give trainers simple tools to manage audio, adjust layouts, and run sessions smoothly. The three-month integration finished on time and on budget, and the system was so intuitive that no extra user training was required.

New Redundancy Features Provide Always‑On Dependability

Additionally, Extron has updated its VCA 100 Virtual Control Appliance with features that bring new capabilities to the platform. The new redundancy feature enables a backup VCA 100 to automatically take over in the event of a system failure, creating a high-availability virtual control system. Redundancy adds an additional layer of protection to this already reliable platform. In addition, enhanced alarm reporting sends email alerts to support staff when any condition triggers an alarm in the redundant system.

The Extron VCA 100 is a Virtual Control Appliance with integrated Virtual Control Processors (VCPs) designed for centralized AV control across the organization. The VCA 100 includes five VCPs, and organizations can use LinkLicenses to enable up to 30 IPCP Pro xi virtual control processors, providing scalable control for the enterprise without recurring licensing fees.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal FIRE) operates four technology-enhanced training centers located throughout California. They are used for year-round training in fire protection and prevention. The original and largest Cal FIRE Training Center (CFTC) is at their 420-acre campus near the city of Ione in Northern California, which has upgraded the audiovisual technology, adding Extron DTP systems with live annotation and intuitive AV control to support advanced instruction for firefighters and other personnel.

The training center, which was last remodeled in the 1990s, provides advanced instruction for firefighters and other personnel in fire prevention, emergency response, and law enforcement related to fires. Firefighters are trained using the latest techniques, tools, and equipment, which includes AV technology. Though not highly advanced, the existing AV system was plagued by performance issues and ongoing reliability concerns.

The current remodel saw refreshed interiors and an overhaul of the AV systems, with significantly enhanced technology and expanded capabilities. The CFTC consists of five large classrooms, various meeting spaces, and two auditoriums. Each room had to include an independent AV presentation system with high-performance AV switching, optimal image quality, dependable signal integrity over long distances, and user-friendly system control. The solution also had to be flexible and reliable. The plan called for use of the existing conduit, although cable pass-through space was limited; some rooms would require wall penetration.

The instructors had several requests for the new AV systems. A top request was to be able to annotate over video. Another wish was for augmented visibility, particularly to display a sand table from a variety of angles during live fire demonstrations.

Part of a broad remodel, AV systems were modernized across the campus. Each space now features an independent presentation system designed for high-performance switching, reliable long-distance signal transmission, clear image quality, and simple annotation tools, all supported by a new shielded twisted-pair cable infrastructure.

“The Extron Annotator makes system usage effortless and intuitive, empowering users to focus on creativity rather than complexity,” said Teo Nguyen, senior systems engineer/programmer at AV Structural, the integrator on the project. "Extron control systems, with provided certified drivers and toolkits, helped me get the programming tasks done quickly and perfectly."

Structural modifications were made to facilitate installation of ceiling-mounted Panasonic projection systems, Samsung Pro wall displays, and additional sources, as well as upgraded AV systems. A shielded twisted pair cable infrastructure was installed to enable AV and control distribution throughout the space.

An Extron DTP system provides flexible signal distribution within each classroom, auditorium, and meeting space. Other Extron products in the space include a 4K/60 annotation processor, a ShareLink Pro wireless gateway, and a TouchLink Pro 10-inch touchpanel.

With a centralized equipment room distributing signals throughout the training center, Cal FIRE’s upgraded rooms standardize operation through consistent control interfaces while supporting flexible room configurations. Partition-sensor automation automatically adapts the AV setup when the movable wall between the two auditoriums is opened or closed. Cal FIRE reports that the Extron AV systems with annotation have significantly enhanced CFTC learning environments, improving reliability and ease of use so instructors can focus on teaching rather than troubleshooting technology.

Michigan’s Oakland Community College recently opened its ultramodern Culinary Studies Institute in a new three-story, 78,000-square-foot building on the Royal Oak campus. OCC leadership recognized that the legacy culinary studies teaching location at OCC’s Orchard Ridge campus was too small to handle the volume of students applying to attend classes there. They also recognized the Royal Oak campus was situated in a vibrant dining and entertainment mecca.

A decade of planning went into constructing a new home for the Culinary Studies Institute on OCC’s Royal Oak campus. Building design began in 2020. By fall 2025, construction was complete and the teaching kitchens opened to students. We continue to see growing demand for Bring Your Own Meeting (BYOM) across a wider range of spaces, driven by users who want to collaborate locally while seamlessly including remote participants. Employees expect to use familiar UC platforms such as Teams and Zoom to connect with remote colleagues while gathering in conference rooms, meeting spaces, or classrooms. A critical requirement is the ability to use the room’s camera, microphone, and speakers so local participants can be clearly seen and heard, and remote attendees can fully engage with everyone in the room. At the same time, users want this experience to run from their own laptops without the need to rely on complex or costly room-based systems.

Advances in collaboration switchers have made this model increasingly practical. USB-C is transforming connectivity by combining video, data, and power into a single, streamlined solution. Increasingly, though, we see USB-C causing pain points with AV/IT groups. Its all-in-one capability—video, data, and power—is both a boon and a challenge for many teams. The ability to provide, in one connector, what was traditionally handled by three connections—HDMI for video, USB-A for data, and power—is what everyone has been waiting for. However, in many spaces, and particularly those without tight controls on the laptop or other devices being connected, it can be a mixed bag in terms of what features the mobile device and AV system support.

Users are often left trying to figure out in a hurry if the USB-C connection supports device charging for their laptop, or a USB data connection to in-room devices such as cameras, microphones, or speakers that might be needed for Teams or Zoom meetings. That same data connection might also support a wired Ethernet connection to the local network. Communicating which features are required and supported during system planning is critical to ensuring users have what they need.

Another challenge with USB-C is staying within the five-hub limit when adding USB devices like extension products or switchers. These devices often include internal hubs, which must be factored into the design. Exceeding the limit often leads to intermittent signal issues. Product specifications that include technical information, such as internal USB hub counts, are critical to proper AV/IT system design, and choosing equipment from manufacturers that make this information readily available is an important benchmark for addressing this common USB-C pain point.

Extron has introduced its DTP3 T 211, the newest addition to the DTP3 platform that is available immediately. This long distance transmitter sends USB-C video and bidirectional RS-232 signals up to 330 feet (100 meters) over a shielded CAT 6A cable. Extron's new EDID 121 is a next-generation EDID emulator for 8K, 5K, and 21:9 ultra-widescreen displays. This problem-solving device features Extron-exclusive EDID Minder Plus technology to provide enhanced 512-byte EDID emulation for supporting additional memory blocks needed to convey advanced display capabilities via EDID and DisplayID structures. Users can choose from several pre-stored EDID profiles or capture and save EDID from a connected display. The EDID 121 is HDCP 2.3 compliant and supports resolutions up to 8K/60 at data rates up to 40.1 Gbps. System integrators and design engineers deal with a lot of challenges, but one that probably isn't discussed as much as it should be is installing equipment in a safe and secure way. Without a keen attention to detail, accidents can happen … and they do.

In 2021, an LED panel fall off the wall at a TV station and the anchor injured his nose. It pinned him against his desk on the live set. The collapse was believed to have been a rigging failure, where one of the support points for the overloaded video wall failed.

Accidents can also happen in corporate boardrooms and other Pro AV production spaces. That’s why it’s critical to safely mount, secure, and conceal equipment. Safety involves a combination of proper planning and the correct hardware that accounts for weight load, structural integrity, and proper cable management. Although they might cost extra, sturdy racks and appropriate mounting hardware can be beneficial for the longevity of your equipment. It might even save someone's nose—or your job.

Proper Installation

Level 3 Audiovisual recently completed a massive AV modernization program called Mod ’25 for a Fortune 500 global manufacturer that replaced hundreds of legacy videoconferencing systems with modern, Zoom-enabled collaboration spaces that met strict global standards. The scope of the project included 465 rooms, 28 sites, and 10 countries—and it was delivered in less than 12 months.

One of the keys to a successful installation project is ensuring that all the equipment has been assembled correctly, using all the cables, wires, and screws recommended by the manufacturer. According to Bill McGinty, COO, Level 3 Audiovisual, every project conducted by the company follows a comprehensive safety checklist, which includes verifying all mounts, securing cables, maintaining clear walkways, and scheduling regular inspections.

“As AV technology continues to evolve, becoming more compact, lightweight, and integrated, our commitment to safety and security remains unwavering,” said McGinty. "Whether we’re working in a broadcast studio, a corporate boardroom, or a mission-critical control room, the principles of proper mounting, cable management, and environmental awareness are essential to protecting both people and equipment. These practices are not just about compliance—they’re about creating reliable, safe, and sustainable AV environments."

Manufacturers Help the Cause

For their part, manufacturers try to be as clear as possible in their documentation to describe the proper way to install the equipment and systems. There’s also a wide variety of safety accessories available.

For example, Extron offers several products designed for secure ceiling mounting and cable concealment. Its SoundField pendant speakers are supported by a variety of accessories, including the PendantConnect speaker cable that comes with an integrated steel safety cable for securing the speaker to the ceiling bracket. In addition, Extron’s SMK A speaker aircraft cable kits can be used to reduce lateral movement, when required by local seismic codes, and when suspending the speaker between ceiling beams.

“Proper equipment mounting is essential for crew safety and installation reliability, whether it’s for a rack, projector, display, or below the table,” said Joe da Silva, VP of marketing at Extron. “Our WBA 100 wall and box adapter allows for AV equipment to be mounted near a display, making it ideal for installations with a flat panel display or wall-mounted short throw projector."

Often, cables have to be concealed within furniture or behind cabinets, so Extron offers an entire product line called the Cable Cubby series devoted to cable management solutions. “In addition, our VM 100 Series VESA mount kit conveniently secures products to the back of a display," da Silva added. "The PMK 155 pole mount kit secures and conceals products above the projector or beneath a surface with select Extron Cable Cubby Series enclosures. The unique Half Rack Shelf System allows the mounting of products in space constrained furniture when there is no AV closet or space for full-size equipment racks.”

Determining What's Best

According to Gina Sansivero, VP of marketing and corporate communications for AtlasIED, wall-mounted loudspeakers are often used in corporate boardrooms when in-ceiling loudspeakers aren’t an option or if additional coverage in larger spaces is required. Mounting them properly maintains the aesthetic of the room while keeping cables and mounts concealed.

“Key considerations when choosing the right loudspeaker should be coverage required, the configuration and layout of the environment, and room acoustics,” she said. “They can be surface mounted or recess mounted. When recessed, cable pathways generally run behind the wall, and are hidden, ensuring aesthetic continuity in the room. However, when surface mounted, cables may be visible if they aren’t run behind the walls.”

In this case, AtlasIED carefully considers cable management into loudspeaker and bracket design. “Our loudspeakers and mounting options are easy to install and provide integrators the flexibility needed to minimize aesthetic impact in the rooms,” Sansivero said.

What’s most important is following rules for safety, no matter what production environment you are working in, and understanding which safety solutions work best for a particular environment. Safely installing production equipment calls for careful planning, strict safety measures, and thorough follow-up checks. Main steps include planning, site prep, energy isolation (LOTO), secure rigging and alignment, and final testing and training.

“In broadcast environments, we emphasize the use of certified rigging hardware and secondary safety attachments for overhead fixtures, along with cable ramps and underfloor raceways to reduce trip hazards,” said McGinty. “In corporate spaces, secure wall mounts and in-wall conduits help maintain a clean, professional, and safe environment. And in control rooms, we rely on rack-mounted systems, anti-tip hardware, and clear labeling to ensure operational efficiency and crew safety."

Addressing Safety Concerns

Equipment that is not securely mounted poses serious hazard to the set, talent, and crew. Here are a few tips to improve installation safety practices, including some specifics for displays and cables.

• Check weight capacities: Always adhere to the weight ratings of all mounting hardware, racks, shelves, and walls.
• Use proper fasteners: When wall-mounting a rack or display, use screws, bolts, and anchors that are appropriate for the wall material and are long enough for a secure hold.
• Balance rack loads: For mobile racks, place heavier equipment like power amplifiers at the bottom to lower the center of gravity to prevent tipping.
• Protect against falling objects: When installing overhead equipment, such as speakers or lighting, properly secure suspended units, and mark any flown cables to prevent contact with moving objects.

Wall-Mounted Displays

• Verify the wall structure: Identify and drill into wall studs or use appropriate anchors to support the weight of the display. Drilling into drywall without proper support can weaken the wall.
• Choose the right mount: Select a mount rated to support the size and weight of your specific display. The load capacity of mounts varies among manufacturers.
• Address ADA compliance: In public spaces, ensure wall-mounted items do not protrude more than 4 inches into a circulation path to ensure accessibility and prevent hazards.
• Conceal cables safely: Route cables through walls using in-wall rated wiring or organize them with cord protectors or raceways (an enclosed metal channel) to eliminate tripping hazards.

Cable Management

• Use proper bundling: Use Velcro straps or re-closable J-hooks for bundling cables. Avoid cinching ties too tightly, as this can crimp wires and damage insulation.
• Install cable guards: When cables must cross foot traffic areas, use cable guards to protect people from tripping.
• Label everything: Labelling all cables at both ends makes future troubleshooting and maintenance much easier.

They also incorporate a new Extron HTML5 stack, enabling modern, responsive interface design without relying on outdated technologies. HTML5 allows rich, interactive control pages that scale seamlessly across different screen sizes and orientations. It also supports embedded multimedia elements, including H.264 video streams, dynamic graphics, and real-time data widgets.

TLP Pro 535, TLP Pro 835, and TLP Pro 1035 touchpanels can be transformed into standalone control systems using LinkLicense for TLP Control Processor and an optional TLCA 2 - TouchLink Control Port Expansion Adapter. This approach simplifies system design and reduces the hardware footprint by eliminating the need for a separate control processor. It is ideal for installations where space is limited or cost efficiency is a priority.

Multi-color status indicators provide immediate visual feedback for system states, alerts, or room availability, allowing users to quickly identify room status or system conditions without navigating menus. The feature includes 10 default colors with predefined options that make setup fast and intuitive. The indicators can show a broad spectrum of colors and also support custom HEX color values for precise color matching, enabling alignment with corporate branding or application-specific requirements.

The TLP Pro 35 Series includes touchpanels in four sizes, including 5.5, 8, 10.1, and 15.6-inch models. They are available in a variety of configurations, including tabletop, wall mount, and cable cubby options, with finishes in either black or white. All wall mount models except the 15.6" can be mounted in either portrait or landscape orientations, making them ideal for environments where space is limited or specific viewing angles are required.

Extron recently introduced it NAV E 222 USB-C and HDMI switching encoder. Adding USB-C input capability and input switching to the NAV Pro AV over IP Series platform, this new Encoder provides AV system designers with flexible options to create high performance streaming systems. Versatile input switching modes are configurable as auto or manual switching.

Extron Introduces Reliable New Twisted Pair USB 5Gbps Extension

Extron also recently unveiled its UCS 910 Series of twisted pair USB 5Gbps extenders. This new series extends USB data signals from peripheral devices to a host computer over twisted pair cable. Compatible with USB 3 and previous standards, they support data rates up to USB 5Gbps and can send signals up to 330 feet (100m) over a CAT 6A cable.

The UCS TR 910 Kit includes a transmitter, receiver with power supply, and ZipClip brackets for secure mounting of the units in furniture, behind a display, or under a desk. The transmitter features a USB-C host connection and can be powered from the receiver, or locally with an optional power supply. The receiver features a two-port USB hub with USB-C and USB-A ports for connecting remote peripherals.

The UCS 910 Series also supports annotation tools, interactive displays, headsets, speakers, and a wide range of other USB devices. With data rates up to 5Gbps and support for USB 3 and earlier standards, the UCS 910 Series is ideal for training rooms, courtrooms, conference spaces, classrooms, and lecture halls where high-performance USB extension is required.

New 8K HDMI Matrix for ProAV Applications

The DXP 42 HD 8K, a compact yet powerful 4x2 HDMI matrix switcher, was designed for professional AV environments that require high-performance video distribution. Supporting resolutions up to 8K/60 and ultra-wide 5K at data rates up to 40.1 Gbps, this advanced switcher is ideal for applications such as Microsoft Teams Front Row systems.

The DXP 42 HD 8K is fully HDCP 2.3-compliant and features Extron-exclusive technologies including EDID Minder® Plus, which manages advanced display features, and SpeedSwitch for fast input switching, ensuring reliable routing of high data rate HDMI signals to multiple displays.

The DXP 42 HD 8K is equipped with multiple integration-friendly features like HDMI audio de-embedding and automatic input cable equalization. CEDIA Welcomes New Board Members and Officers

CEDIA welcomed several additions to its Global Board of Directors for the 2026-2028 term. Following a slate vote approved by CEDIA members, integrators Rich Green of Rich Green Design, Jennifer Mallett of Level Up Automation, and James Ratcliffe of Homeplay have now assumed their positions as board directors. Joining them will be board-appointed members, Kris Hogg of Samsung and Maryellen Oswald of Somfy.

The newly elected slate of officers forming the executive committee will be led by chairperson Amanda Wildman. An integrator and president/owner of TruMedia Home, Wildman becomes the first woman to hold the chairperson role in CEDIA’s history. Alongside her, Edward Gilmore will serve as vice chairperson, Stuart Tickle as treasurer, and James Chen as secretary. Nelson’s career highlights include serving as lead editor at Systems Contractor News for over 16 years and co-founded Residential Systems magazine. Nelson won the WAVE (Women in AV) Mentor Award in 2013 and was named to the SCN Hall of Fame in 2025. The cavlo Trade Show is returning to the entertainment mecca of Nashville, TN, for its spring 2026 show. cavlo will bring the professional AVL community together at the Embassy Suites Murfreesboro for a two-day event. Extron is now shipping its first PoE speaker, the NF 4C LP. This PoE powered 4-inch ceiling speaker system features scalable power, DSP, and Dante connectivity. Capable of driving up to three external passive speakers from its integrated four channel amplifier, the NF 4C LP is a single‑cable solution for individual zones within larger distributed ceiling speaker systems.

Using Extron’s DSP Configurator Pro software, the integrated DSP can be set up independently for each amplifier channel with essential processing per zone. Dante Domain Manager and AES67 support ensure wide compatibility with enterprise configurations and other network audio devices.

“The NF 4C LP expands our line of PoE powered, Dante-enabled solutions,” said Casey Hall, chief marketing officer for Extron. “Hot on the heels of our instantly popular NetPA 204 POE, the NF 4C LP PoE powered ceiling speaker system now offers an additional design option for our customers that's available today.”

The 4-inch (102mm) full-range driver features a wide and smooth frequency range of 110 Hz to 20 kHz and is engineered with a practical 135-degree conical dispersion. In voice lift applications, the NF 4C LP provides excellent coverage and voice clarity. Available in packages of two, three, or four speakers, the NF 4C LP meets the requirements of complex, decentralized systems with a self-contained PoE powered speaker solution.

Extron unveiled its new DTP3 T 211, a long distance transmitter for sending USB-C video and bidirectional RS‑232 signals up to 330 feet (100 meters) over a shielded CAT 6A cable. The transmitter can provide up to 100 watts of charging power to the USB-C source when deployed with the Extron UPI 100 power injector. HDMI loop-through is also available for convenient local monitoring.

The transmitter supports video resolutions up to 4K/60 at 4:4:4 color sampling, EDID Minder, and HDCP 2.3. For maximum image quality and minimal latency, all supported video resolutions are transported without compression. The compact enclosure size and remote power capability make the DTP3 T 211 ideal for discreet placement in lecterns, beneath tables, or wherever needed to meet application requirements.

“The DTP3 T 211 expands design options for USB-C connectivity and extension within DTP Systems,” said Casey Hall, chief marketing officer for Extron. “Its HDMI loop‑out and ability to support USB-C device charging delivers increased functionality and convenience.”

Todd Liedahl Joins 3G Productions as Chief Operating Officer

3G Productions has appointed Todd Liedahl to serve as its chief operating officer. Based at 3G’s Nashville location, Liedahl is now tasked with overseeing all company operations, with an emphasis on driving efficiency and scale as 3G continues to grow its presence into a national full-service provider.

Liedahl comes to 3G Productions’ newly-created COO position following a seven-year tenure with AV Stumpfl, where he served as the Austrian manufacturer’s president of U.S. operations. While there, he built the brand’s American business presence from the ground up and scaled operations to meet growing demand. Prior to that, he was with Encore Global—formerly PSAV—for more than two decades, where he progressed through leadership roles focused on sales, operations, and event technology. Humly Promotes Jonathan Boutin to Head of Marketing

Humly has promoted Jonathan Boutin to head of marketing. Based in Stockholm, Boutin will lead all global marketing initiatives across strategy and communications, and ensure that all marketing activities align with the Humly brand. He reports to CEO Anders Karlsson.

AVIXA certification exams and related education expenses are now eligible under the 529 education savings plan in the United States. Recent legislation expanded the scope of education and training costs covered by a 529 education savings plan, making professional development more accessible. This expansion can empower pro AV learners to pursue industry-recognized credentials using tax-advantaged funds.

Funds from a 529 savings plan cannot be used for AVIXA memberships, but eligible expenses include certification exam fees, prep courses, and related training materials. This includes expenses related to both in person and online prep courses to provide flexible learning for professionals seeking Certified Technology Specialist (CTS), CTS-D, CTS-I, and Audiovisual Network Professional (ANP) certifications. Eligible courses and fees include CTS Prep Pathway, CTS Prep Pathway Plus Exam, CTS-I Prep, CTS-D Prep, and ANP Prep. In addition, exam fees are covered for CTS, CTS-D, CTS-I, and ANP.

Bogen Communications announced a partnership with Alertus Technologies, a provider of mass notification and emergency communication solutions. Alertus can automatically trigger the Nyquist platform Routines API.Routines are powerful user-definable routines that can automatically launch a procedure, or sequence of actions that the Nyquist system executes in response to a defined “trigger” event. Through API-level communication, Alertus can automatically trigger these Nyquist Routines, share alert information for custom messaging and zoning, and display Nyquist system status directly within the Alertus console.

This market-ready solution enables IP video distribution over existing coax cabling, eliminating the need for costly retrofits. Extron has introduced its new DTP3 CrossPoint Series configurable presentation matrix switchers. These switchers were designed to deliver high-performance matrix switching with HDMI and DTP3 inputs and outputs, audio DSP with AEC, Dante, a power amplifier, and a control processor, all in a single box. DTP3 CrossPoint matrix switchers feature reversible DTP3 I/O ports, enabling one unit to support multiple matrix configurations to suit the unique needs of each project.

The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) has transformed its Sheikh Zayed Theatre with an upgraded AV system powered by Extron NAV Pro AV over IP and TouchLink Pro control technologies. Working in collaboration with U.K.-based integrator GVAV, the project overhauled the 400-seat flagship venue to deliver flexible, reliable performance for daily lectures, hybrid teaching, high-profile public discussions, and live broadcasts. With Extron’s scalable network-based video distribution and intuitive control technologies at the core, the theater now supports seamless operation across academic and professional events.

The university required a high-performance AV solution capable of supporting daily academic functions as well as dynamic hybrid events. In addition to native lecture recording and presentation delivery, the system needed to accommodate external broadcast crews who regularly connect to the internal infrastructure for live events. Reliability was paramount; any downtime or complexity in system navigation could compromise high-stakes broadcasts or scheduled lectures.

A key consideration was maintaining a flexible presentation environment that could serve both in-person and remote audiences with equal clarity. The AV upgrade had to be deployed during the tight three-week window of the winter recess, requiring precise coordination and pre-planned network configurations. The initial vision included an expansive LED wall, but due to cost and scheduling implications, an alternate display system was specified with three edge-blended laser projectors.

Completed during the university’s winter recess, the installation introduced a robust AV infrastructure including Extron NAV encoders, decoders, and the NAVigator system manager for centralized content routing, supported by advanced control processors and TouchLink Pro touchpanels. Three edge-blended 10,000-lumen projectors, auxiliary 4K displays, and multiple PTZ cameras provide a dynamic visual experience for both in-person and remote audiences. The network-based design ensures future scalability, enabling LSE to expand capabilities without disruptive rewiring, while streamlined interfaces empower faculty, presenters, and technicians to manage sessions with confidence.

Curtin Singapore has transformed three adjacent classrooms into a fully reconfigurable teaching environment powered by Extron’s NAV Pro AV over IP system. Part of the university’s long-term commitment to hybrid education and efficient space utilization, the project, led by integrator AV-Science Marketing Pte, delivers a divisible classroom solution that supports three independent sessions, paired combinations, or a fully merged environment. Extron’s NAV System provides the flexibility, reliability, and ease of use required to maximize functionality within limited physical space.

The goal of the project was ambitious: convert three standard classrooms into a reconfigurable space capable of supporting three distinct layouts: individual (1:1:1), partial merge (1:2), or full combination (3). The system had to be efficient, intuitive, and reliable enough for instructors to manage without technical assistance, while also meeting the university’s baseline standards for hybrid instruction.

Signal routing and room control logic had to be dynamically adjustable in order to match the room configuration at any given time. At the same time, each zone needed to offer the full suite of AV resources, including PTZ cameras, document cameras, wireless microphones, ceiling speakers, projectors, and flat panel displays. To complicate matters further, all of this functionality had to be delivered in a compact footprint that respected the spatial limitations of the existing classroom layout.

At the core of Curtin Singapore’s divisible classroom solution is Extron’s NAV Pro AV over IP system, the only no-compromise AV-over-IP platform specifically engineered for enterprise-scale deployments. NAV allowed the university to consolidate three classrooms into a fully flexible AV environment that can be divided or merged in real time. The system ensures signal integrity, system responsiveness, and user simplicity.

“Extron AV systems are very easy to use. From an integration standpoint, their architecture allowed us to solve what could’ve been a very complex routing problem," said Bertrand Seah, general manager, AV-Science Marketing Pte. The installation features NAV E 121 encoders and NAV SD 101 scaling decoders for low-latency, visually lossless 4K/60 4:4:4 transmission, managed by the NAVigator System Manager for centralized configuration and monitoring. Control is handled by Extron TLP Pro 1025T TouchLink Pro touchpanels and an IPCP Pro 250 xi processor, while audio is supported by a DMP 128 Plus digital signal processor, XPA U 1004 amplifiers, and SF 26CT ceiling speakers. With additional integration of DTP HDMI 4K extenders, MediaPort 200, and PTZ cameras, the system seamlessly supports hybrid learning and conferencing. According to Curtin Singapore, the installation was completed in three months with minimal disruption, enabling instructors to adapt instantly to changing room layouts while maintaining clear communication and consistent AV performance.

Extron's NAV Pro AV over IP Series has been selected by the Joint Interoperability Test Command (JITC) for placement on the Department of Defense Information Network Approved Products List (DoDIN APL). Products on the DoDIN APL are approved for use in a wide range of government installations. The NAV Series is the most advanced professional AV over IP technology to receive this Department of Defense certification, enabling confident installation of NAV Series systems in the most secure information and network infrastructures.

Extron has unveiled its DTP3 R 201 D. This single-gang decorator-style receiver works with Extron DTP3-enabled products to extend HDMI and bidirectional RS-232 signals up to 330 feet (100 meters) over a shielded CAT 6A cable. The DTP3 R 201 D supports video resolutions up to 4K/60 at 4:4:4 color sampling and complies with HDCP 2.3. For maximum image quality and minimal latency, all supported video resolutions are transported without compression. The one-gang form factor provides maximum space efficiency in wall mount, floor box, and furniture mount applications. The wall-mountable design and remote power capability of the DTP3 R 201 D provide the convenience of placing output connections precisely where they are needed.

The JB Duke Hotel and Conference Center in Durham, NC, owned by Duke University, has hosted executive MBA students and faculty from the university's Fuqua School of Business, as well as travelers from around the world, since 1989. During recent renovations to the property, the Glaxo Classroom and the Executive Classroom, plus adjoining collaboration breakout spaces, received major audiovisual system upgrades anchored by Extron NAV Pro AV over IP for signal switching and distribution.

"We specified NAV Pro AV over IP based on its flexibility. Extron validated our design, checked how we configured the network switches, verified firmware, and confirmed that the NAV encoders and decoders were configured correctly, says David Johnson, CHTP, Area Director, Information Technology at JB Duke Hotel. "They commissioned the system remotely, which was a real time saver."

The Glaxo and Executive Classrooms serve as hybrid learning venues for the Fuqua School of Business, and also host events booked by third parties. Both classrooms have a back-stage tech booth housing AV system central functions.

For working professionals, the weekend Executive MBA program hosted in the JB Duke classrooms is attractive because it’s designed for those who want short-burst intensive residencies with three-day weekend sessions on campus followed by distance sessions. The DA2 HD 8K AE extracts two-channel LPCM audio from the HDMI input signal and converts it to analog audio. Its analog output is configurable for stereo or dual-mono signals. The DA2 HD 8K AI amplifier accepts separate two-channel analog audio and converts it to 16-bit LPCM audio at 48 kHz for embedding onto the HDMI output signal.

These HDCP 2.3-compliant products are loaded with features and capabilities that streamline integration and operation. They feature Extron EDID Minder Plus. This technology supports additional memory blocks for displays that convey advanced features via both EDID and DisplayID for proper management of the extended EDID information required to reliably display and distribute 5K and 21:9 aspect ratio content. The DA2 HD 8K AE and DA2 HD 8K AI ensure high quality and reliable system operation in a wide variety of professional environments, from presentation venues to esports arenas.

The DA2 HD 8K AE audio de-embedder and DA2 HD 8K AI audio embedder are designed and engineered for commercial AV applications with 8K video resolution requirements. Both models provide two outputs that support HDMI 2.1 data rates up to 40.1 Gbps, HDR, Deep Color up to 12-bit, 3D, and HD lossless audio formats.  Other features include input cable equalization, output muting, audio configuration, Key Minder that continuously verifies HDCP compliance, and more. The embedder also offers audio gain and attenuation adjustment and +5 VDC, 250 mA power on each output for external peripheral devices. With these many audio and video capabilities, the DA2 HD 8K AE audio de-embedder and DA HD 8K AI embedder meet the industry needs for audio processing and distribution of high data rate HDMI signals to standard and ultra-wide aspect ratio displays such as 21:9 and 5K.

Extron recently introduced its new NetPA 204 POE, a Dante-enabled, PoE powered, four channel audio power amplifier that delivers up to 20 watts per channel. It is designed to be mounted above ceiling tiles, out of sight and near the speakers. Receiving audio and power over a single cable, the NetPA 204 POE automatically recognizes connected PoE, PoE+, or PoE++ to deliver the corresponding amount of output power.

[Commitment to Competition]

With its integrated DSP, the NetPA 204 POE includes essential audio signal processing that offers the ability to meet the requirements of complex, decentralized systems. Dante Domain Manager and AES67 support ensures wide compatibility with enterprise configurations and other network audio devices.

“The NetPA 204 POE simplifies design and integration by requiring only a single cable for power and network audio,” said Casey Hall, chief marketing officer for Extron. “The integrated DSP makes the NetPA 204 POE an ideal solution for multi-zone and user-reconfigurable spaces that utilize decentralized control and audio over IP.”

The NetPA 204 POE is housed in a plenum rated enclosure that is fanless for silent operation. Like all Extron products, the NetPA 204 POE has been engineered for many years of reliable service.

Thanks to Extron's versatile NAV Pro AV over IP system and mobile modular furniture, the Caldwell County School System has elevated its humble meeting room into a hub of innovation and collaboration. The school system, located in North Carolina, equipped their boardroom with a modern audiovisual system that shows meeting agendas and presentations on multiple screens around the room for those attending in-person and streams broadcasts of board meetings to viewers attending meetings virtually.

[Video Walls of Knowledge]

Constantly booked, the venue hosts community forums, teacher in-service training sessions, K-12 classes, and monthly school board meetings. Eight AV-equipped workstations line the walls of the room. The workstations independently originate and display AV content shareable to the other workstations and to the Internet. Each workstation has a unique color ID, signified by the color of the buttons on its touchpanel user interface.

"People from other North Carolina school districts and neighboring states have attended meetings in this room, and they are definitely impressed," said Cody Greene, technology director at Caldwell County School System, who operates and maintains the AV system. "The AV system is rock solid in continuous day-to-day operation, and the only maintenance performed has been planned upgrades and operator interface changes."

Specifically, the room has eight AV content origination workstations and eight displays. A NAV Pro AV over IP 1 Gbps network links all displays to all content origination workstations, allowing any source to be shown on any or all of the displays. NAV encoders and scaling decoders provide ingress and egress to the IP network to switch and transport AV content from the sources to the displays.

Displays are spaced equidistant around the room, two on each wall. Two of the displays are 86-inch touchscreens. The other six are 98-inch displays. The touchscreen displays are used in teaching sessions where instructors can interact with the content shown on the screen. They are mounted on opposite walls so that classes can be held at either end of the room. The 98-inch displays are used during board meetings and community events to provide easily readable information to crowds or to provide background ambiance or informational images.

To support active learning and other use cases where people collaborate in small groups and also share to neighboring groups in the room, each workstation has its own display, PC, NAV encoder, NAV scaling decoder, and TouchLink Pro touchpanel. ShareLink Pro wireless presentation systems allow wireless sharing from portable devices.

"One reason we selected ShareLink is because a lot of the people who meet and collaborate in this room have Chromebooks," said Patrick Morgan, director, network and video technologies Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute. "We pretested the casting capability of Chromebook with ShareLink, and it worked well. ShareLink also simplifies the AV system design and saves on additional equipment purchases because it has a built-in switcher to transfer between wired and wireless content sharing."

Multicolor LED light strips controlled by the AV system backlight the top and bottom of each station display to indicate at a glance which station is originating the content appearing on the screen. The bottom backlight shows the workstation's own color ID, while the top backlight shows the color ID of the workstation supplying the displayed content. The district’s in-house IT/AV team designed, installed, programmed and operates the boardroom AV system.

If you’ve been paying any attention to college campuses in America, you’ll know that esports is one of the hottest trends in gaming. That's why California’s Long Beach City College (LBCC) officially opened the largest esports lab in Southern California with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in February. The lab was built between March-July 2024 and soft-opened to LBCC students during the Fall 2024 semester.

The $2.3 million LBCC E-Sports Lab is home to 47 Alienware gaming stations, with five teaching stations available to coaches or an instructor to interact with students in competitions or classroom education. The facility also features an optimized lighting system to enhance player comfort and reduce visual fatigue during long gaming sessions, a fully equipped shoutcaster production booth that supports live broadcasting of esports competitions over the internet, and an independent operational infrastructure that provides uninterrupted network and power to the lab at all times.

“We recognize the rapid growth and professionalization of the esports industry,” said Dr. Nohel Corral, LBCC’s EVP of student services. “We see that it's projected to be worth about $6 billion by 2030, and we wanted to ensure that we prepared our students for emerging career opportunities in gaming. The LBCC E-Sports Lab is precisely the kind of modern, cutting-edge learning environment that makes this possible.”

Before the LBCC E-Sports Lab was opened, LBCC’s players had been competing at a local high school since 2022. According to Jeff Connell, LBCC’s associate VP of capital planning, facilities, and operations, the college converted a seminar space and a computer lab space to make room for the esports facility. “We allocated some high value space to this project and made a huge commitment to esports," he added. "As it turns out, this commitment was a very good choice for everyone."

Members of its program also compete in the National Esports Collegiate Conference (NECC) leagues against more than 600 other two-year/four-year colleges and universities nationwide. They take part in team gaming events playing League of Legends, Valorant, Rainbow Six Siege, and Rocket League. Beyond the competitions, LBCC offers a certificate of achievement in multimedia interaction and game design.

Behind the Screens

The LBCC E-Sports Lab was conceptualized by Chris Greenwood and Mayra Aguilar, project managers for LBCC's Educational and Multimedia Technology, with help from Gabe Giangualano, LBCC's director of esports. California’s HPI Architecture, P2S Engineering, and EKC Enterprises played key roles in AV design, room layout, and AV system installation. Extron products were selected for AV switching, signal distribution, and operational control.

“Extron has worked with Long Beach City College for many years supporting all the AV in their learning spaces and classrooms across campus,” explained Kevin Diltz, Extron’s esports business development manager. “We designed the LBCC E-Sports Lab’s AV system to give their space the top competitive edge they desire, plus a facility that can host tournaments on campus, inviting other colleges and universities to come in and compete.”

The Alienware gaming stations form the heart of the playing systems, laid out on long tables within the room. “Each of those 47 computers is a video source in the AV system,” Diltz said. “There is an Extron NAV video encoder connected to each of those. Using a touchpanel in the shoutcaster booth, we're able to route video from any of those 47 PCs to any of the large 4K video displays that are around the room to let spectators watch the live gameplay.”

The five coaching station PCs and touchscreen monitors are mounted on roll-around tables at the end of each team table, so they can move around the room. They are also connected to the shoutcast booth using Extron NAV encoders, connected to Extron SMB 114 surface mount connection boxes with Ethernet connections.

As for monitors? There are seven 75-inch 4K displays on the walls around the gaming floor, two 65-inch displays in the shoutcaster booth, a 75-inch display in the reception lobby, and a 55-inch display in the hallway. To add human faces to the esports streams, there are five tracking PTZ cameras covering the players in the lab.

Each of the two Extron MGP 641 xi multi-window processors can individually display up to four source windows on a single screen in a range of layouts. They are also daisy-chained, so up to eight source windows can be seen on any display. Collectively, Extron NAV E 101, NAV E 121, and NAV E 401 D encoders receive AV content and stream through the lab's standard 1 Gbps Ethernet switches to NAV SD 101 scaling decoders. The PoE capability of the Extron components simplified the lab’s wiring and AV installation.

Clearly, there is a lot of equipment and production knowledge associated with streaming LBCC’s esports tournaments to the outside world. But that’s a good thing: “The casting and publishing of the games is a trade and a skill that students develop as part of their education,” said Connell. “They learn by working in the shoutcaster booth, where student operators can access all of the players’ screens and choose which ones to put on the large monitors and stream to the web in real-time. These are valuable, marketable skills.”

More Than 'Wow'

When it comes to hosting esports competitions, there is no doubt that the LBCC E-Sports Lab delivers the "wow" factor to the players, in-room spectators (chairs are brought in to seat them), and online viewers alike. The style and finish of the room is eye-catching and attractive, and the functionality of its AV system ensures that gameplay is smooth, lag-free, and reliable—even during power blackouts!

However, even when esports are not underway, the LBCC Esports Lab is a real boost to this community college. “We started with one class,” Dr. Corral said. “We've now created a second class, and the demand to be part of this course is strong among our students.”

At LBCC, esports is classified as a sport just like football or baseball. “Taking part in esports aids skills development. Student athletes enhance their communication, leadership, teamwork, and strategic thinking abilities when they compete as esports teams,” said Corral. “I’m grateful to Dean Randy Totorp, who originally conceptualized the idea of bringing esports to LBCC, and to Coach Gabriel Giangualano, whose leadership has been instrumental in the team’s early success."

But Corral argues the educational pathways and career preparation that esports provide are what really matter. "In today’s economy, gaming is a growing and strong industry with lots of career opportunities. Meanwhile, with four-year universities creating their esports programs as well, taking part in LBCC’s esports tournaments has led to our students being offered scholarships to four-year universities in addition to careers in technology, broadcasting, and game development," he explained. "Finally, esports creates that sense of belonging for students who may not connect through traditional athletics or student clubs on campus, fostering an inclusive environment that enables students from diverse backgrounds to participate and really excel.”

[Extra Lives for Esports?]

Clearly, Long Beach Community College is very happy with its LBCC E-Sports Lab and so is Diltz, because a happy client is a repeat client. "The project went spectacularly well," he told SCN. “LBCC is very, very pleased with the outcome of the space. They have already used it for multiple live events to great success. The whole project has been a win-win for everyone involved."

Extron has introduced the new DTP3 IN2004 Series. These four-input scalers enhance presentations with professional-level video and audio performance. The family consists of three models: DTP3 IN2004 DI/DO (with HDMI and DTP3 inputs and outputs); DTP3 IN2004 DO (with HDMI inputs and HDMI and DTP3 outputs); and IN2004 (all HDMI inputs and outputs).

Combining innovative video and audio processing, signal extension, and networked control, the DTP3 IN2004 Series of seamless scaling switchers are ideal for boardrooms, collaboration spaces, lecture halls, and other professional AV presentation venues. They feature Extron Vector 4K scaling technology which provides advanced video processing for the most demanding applications. Selectable scaled output rates range from 640x480 to 4K/60 at 4:4:4 color sampling. They are HDCP 2.3-compliant and loaded with professional capabilities, such as logo image keying and display, auto-switching between inputs, and selectable seamless switching transitions. Transmission over Extron DTP3 ensures optimal signal integrity, regardless of the resolution. For professional-quality transitions between sources, the scalers offer a range of fade and cut switching effects. In addition, a custom graphic image, such as a company or school logo, can be inserted onto the video output. Selectable FILL and FOLLOW modes are available to set the desired video aspect ratio. FILL mode provides full screen output, while FOLLOW mode preserves the original signal’s aspect ratio. These features and capabilities are just a few of what the DTP3 IN2004 Series delivers in professional presentation environments.

Extron has unveiled the two newest models in the CA Series of Column Array Speakers. Introducing the CA 83T 30-inch Eight Driver Column Array Speaker and the CA 43T 17-inch Four Driver Column Array Speaker.

[4 on the Floor: Lessons from InfoComm 2025]

These new models offer customers new size options for a broader range of sound reinforcement applications. Designed for outstanding speech intelligibility, especially in reverberant environments, these new speakers feature a sleek modern aesthetic and flexible mounting options, making them ideal for any installation.

“Customers asked for smaller column array speakers to join our CA 163, so we are now proud to deliver two new CA Series speakers, the CA 83T and CA 43T,” said Casey Hall, chief marketing officer for Extron. “These are perfect for adding column array speakers to small or medium size acoustically challenging spaces or to supplement sound reinforcement in larger spaces used alongside our existing CA 163 long throw column array speaker.”

The CA 83T and CA 43T can be used as either standalone or as supplemental speakers alongside the CA 163. Their matched 3-inch (76.2 mm) drivers, ensure consistent voicing throughout the entire series, making them ideal as fill speakers in multi‑speaker applications. Two mounting systems are available to accommodate different room layouts and sizes. PT models include a pan and tilt mount for maximum speaker aiming flexibility, while LP models include a low‑profile mount for minimal protrusion from the wall. The CA Series is available in black or white paintable enclosures.

GOALS: The technical support staff of Duquesne University’s Conference and Event Services and the Office of Classroom Technologies worked together to design a new AV system for the Student Union ballroom.

CHALLENGES: The 16-year-old AV system used Cat5e cabling to connect a projector and eight 55-inch flat panels. Implementation of a matrix switcher was discussed, but the challenge of re-cabling a 57-year-old concrete building with two-foot solid concrete beams spaced throughout the ceiling was a daunting task.

FINAL INSTALL/USER BENEFITS: Knowing the future of technology is in AVoIP, the aged system was replaced with a network-based solution, providing a cost-effective, flexible, and scalable result that has improved the presentation options of the ballroom. The system uses professional NETGEAR network switches and Extron’s NAV AVoIP distribution solution to connect 15 endpoints for easy manageability over the existing Cat5e cabling. This complex design also includes both a touch panel and a network button panel programmed for user control and operation. Design, configuration, programming, and installation were completed by the in-house team for a first-of-its-kind system on campus.

Use of the ballroom is very diverse, ranging from groups using a simple, empty stage to the need for major presentations. An additional design aspect was needed to accommodate system access at a movable podium for an HDMI connection, basic system control, and access to a 55-inch floor-standing confidence monitor. The Extron NAV system and NETGEAR switches allow for a secondary switch at the podium, which permits the Network Button Panel, NAV encoder (for the HDMI connection), and NAV decoder (for the confidence monitor) to be connected with a single Cat6 cable, making the podium configuration quick and easy.

Due to their extensive AV and IT knowledge, as well as their technical teamwork, the team delivered a robust, future-proof solution at a fraction of the cost of an external vendor. The commitment to advancing technology has provided a full scope of options available to ballroom users. Now, instead of displaying the same content to all displays in the ballroom, users have a plethora of options. Having the ability to manipulate the displays and other equipment throughout the room sounds like a simple idea, but the behind-the-scenes implementation was no easy task. Datapath Welcomes Craig Childs

Datapath appointed Craig Childs as senior regional sales manager for the Midwest U.S. region. He brings expansive audiovisual knowledge to the role, with over 30 years of AV experience across brands such as Polk Audio, Atlona, Biamp, and Crestron.

Childs' new role sees him working closely with Datapath’s senior sales team to drive new business, particularly solutions involving Datapath’s Aetria solution for control rooms and multi-source video management. Covering Texas, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, and North Dakota., he is relishing his new role and the opportunities it brings.

Almo Pro AV Named AVPro Edge’s First National Distributor Dedicated to Pro AV Market

Almo Pro AV announced a new partnership with AVPro Edge, manufacturer of high-performance signal management and connectivity products. Through this partnership, Almo Pro AV becomes AVPro Edge’s first national distribution partner focused exclusively on serving the commercial and Pro AV markets, including enterprise, education, government, hospitality, and marine. As a result, Almo Pro AV integrators now have access to the AVPro Edge’s complete product portfolio, including AV over IP, HDMI extenders, matrix switchers, audio solutions, video essentials, bullet train cables and more.

Boom Collaboration Partners with Aldous Systems

Boom Collaboration has announced a new distribution partnership with Aldous Systems (Europe), expanding its presence in the U.K. market. This partnership allows Aldous Systems to offer Boom’s complete range of videoconferencing solutions, including videobars, cameras, speakerphones, and connectivity hubs.

Aylesbury-based Aldous is a distributor of networking, control, and audio/video equipment to the trade. Established in 2002 with a commitment to excellent customer service and a strong engineering background in networking products, Aldous has built an extensive customer base in the U.K. and mainland Europe, continuing to research new and innovative solutions for residential and commercial integrators. Black Box and CREON to Present Live Webinar on Control Rooms

D-Tools and FireCAD, powered by Inspect Point, a cloud-based fire alarm CAD solution, announced a strategic integration.

This partnership represents a significant opportunity for fire and security industry professionals, combining D-Tools' end-to-end business management capabilities with FireCAD’s purpose-built tools for fire alarm system design and documentation.

This integration marks a pivotal step in bridging a critical gap that currently exists between system design and ongoing project execution for fire and life safety contractors. By connecting FireCAD’s submittal-ready design tools with D-Tools’ comprehensive System Integrator (SI) platform, the collaboration empowers teams to move seamlessly from riser diagrams and device schedules to estimating, selling, and managing projects, all within a unified workflow. FireCAD streamlines fire alarm system layout with automated calculations, an extensive manufacturer parts library, and code-aligned outputs that simplify AHJ approvals. Extron Network AV Specialist Certification Now Available Online

Extron's Network AV Specialist (NAVS) Certification is now available as a self-paced, online training program. Designed to equip AV professionals with essential knowledge and practical skills, the NAVS certification focuses on the design, implementation, and management of Extron NAV Pro AV over IP systems, including the powerful NAVigator System Manager. This flexible format allows learners to advance their AV over IP expertise at their own pace and convenience.

The NAVS Certification covers core topics including networked AV fundamentals, system planning and design, configuration, and troubleshooting workflows. Participants will also earn accredited continuing education units (CEUs) from AVIXA and BICSI. Ideal for system designers, field engineers, and technicians, certification is awarded upon successful completion of all online modules and the final exam.

JBL VTX A Series Powers Recovery Benefit Concert for Ladders to Leaders

In early 2025, the city of Hagerstown came together for an unforgettable evening of live music and community impact at the Ladders to Leaders Recovery Benefit Concert. Organized by Ladders to Leaders, a local non-profit that supports individuals in achieving lasting recovery, and powered by All Sound Pro LLC, the benefit celebrated those transitioning from addiction to recovery and raised vital support for three local recovery homes operated by Ladders to Leaders.

Bob Ranalli of All Sound Pro and his team deployed a JBL VTX A Series system for the event, choosing it for its clarity, rider friendliness, and effortless deployment. The venue presented several acoustic challenges, including a large parabolic dome in the ceiling and a mix position located slightly house right and under a balcony. Using JBL Performance Manager, Ranalli and team fine-tuned the deployment to handle these challenges. The main JBL VTX A8 arrays were supported by VTX B28 subwoofers in cardioid configuration to keep the low end focused out in the audience, while JBL SRX906 speakers were used for front fill coverage of the VIP seating area. The house’s existing under-balcony loudspeakers were integrated into the system using Crown VRack amplifiers and tuned by ear to match the tonal character of the VTX system.

The performance featured a lineup of musicians with national credentials and deep local roots, including Brad Divens (Wrathchild America, Souls At Zero and KIX) as lead vocalist and bass guitarist, Shannon Larkin of Godsmack and Wrathchild America on drums, Bob Paré from KIX and Ever Rise on guitar and vocals, Brian Forsythe of KIX and Rhino Bucket on guitar, and Brad’s son Zach as a guest vocalist.

Introducing the new UCS SW 313 from Extron. This collaboration and presentation switcher was designed to meet the needs of presentation, unified communications, and other meeting spaces. The UCS SW 313 features three inputs that support the connection of USB and dual HDMI sources and five USB device ports connect to peripherals such as USB cameras and microphones at rates up to USB 10Gbps. The USB-C input provides video and audio, USB data, and 60 watts of power to charge a user's laptop computer. The HDMI output provides signal for the room display and supports resolutions up to 4K/60.

“With collaboration spaces increasingly connecting local and remote participants through UC solutions, integrating local video and audio into Teams and Zoom meetings has never been more crucial,” said Casey Hall, chief marketing officer for Extron. “Our new UCS SW 313 makes this seamless with USB-C connectivity that supports cameras and microphones, all while providing power to a local device.”

The UCS SW 313 offers intuitive collaboration with auto switching that prioritizes inputs, providing natural switching and minimal user interaction with AV hardware or a control system. It can also be controlled via Ethernet, including RS‑232 control to a local display. The UCS SW 313 makes it easy to integrate AV sources and USB cameras for Teams and Zoom meetings into conference, meeting, and collaboration spaces.
