When you think versatility, you usually don't think about a box camera. But the new PTZOptics Studio 4K camera is changing the fixed camera conversation.

[Striving for Sustainability Success]

The Studio 4K's 1/2.8-inch, 8MP CMOS sensor delivers 4K, Full HD, 1080i, and 720p via HDMI, as well as 1080p, 1080i, and 720p via SDI. It can livestream H.264/H.265 video on a network or record the footage to an external source. Supported protocols include NDI HX2, SRT, RTSP, HTTP, TCP/IP, and more.

Operating independently or with other cameras on PTZOptic’s Hive Studio online platform, the camera provides a 72.5-degree angle of view and features a 12x optical zoom. (A 20x model is also available.) Other features include a built-in tally light, so it's ready for multi-camera setups, and a built-in beamforming microphone. And the camera itself is less than 6 inches long and weighs about 1.5 pounds.

Facing the camera, both the left side and bottom sport wall mounting screws. The rear panel has a green LCD standby and red LED power light. There’s also a 12-volt DC input, 3.5mm I/O, USB service port, RS485 control port, and SDI, HDMI, USB, and IP outputs. The right side of the unit has soft buttons for menu access, zoom and focus (which double as directional buttons for menu navigation), auto focus, and two custom presets.

Small Package, Big Features

Press the menu button to display the menu in the upper right hand of the screen that offers options of exposure, color, image, PTZ, noise reduction, setup, information, restore default, and privacy mode. Exposure offers auto, manual, SAE, AAE, and bright options. A built-in meter allows you to choose the areas on the screen where exposure will be prioritized.

In the auto option, the exposure is automatically controlled and is extremely accurate. In the manual setting, you have access over the shutter speed, iris (which defaults at 1.8), and gain. In the SAE mode, you have options of shutter, gain limit, and DRC. access to various areas to check the exposure.

The color menu offers control over the white balance, including various modes as well as saturation and hue. The image portion of the menu provides access to luminance, contrast, sharpness, gamma, flip (horizontal and vertical), and more. Under the PTZ menu, you can shut off the digital zoom or restrict its use, set the zoom speed, freeze the image, and toggle between displaying information on the screen or not. The camera also offers 2D and 3D noise reduction at various levels.

The Studio 4K ships with a remote control with batteries, lens cap, AC adapter, and a USB-A to USB-C cable. The remote control is critical for the camera’s operation, especially if you want to adjust many of the menus or sub menus. Once you have the parameters you want, it's probably easier just to preset it. You can also access the same functions on the side of the camera—but depending on where it's installed, the remote is a much more convenient option.

Eye in the Sky

When I first plugged in the Studio 4K, I was literally stunned at the crisp image. It was superior to that from our $60,000 4K studio camera (granted, they've been around for almost a decade). On startup, the color balance and focus were perfect.

I immediately saw this camera as an overhead option in our 40x60-foot studio for an overhead wide shot for bumpers or credit rolls. Using the remote, you can zoom in or out to frame the exact shot you want. Of course, I would have liked some type of pan and/or tilt functionality, but this is a box camera, not a PTZ model.

In our studio, I mounted the camera in the upper right-hand corner of the room using the same mount that held our lesser-quality surveillance camera. The camera easily captured the entire room. So instead of relying just on three floor studio cameras, we now had a fourth camera that could show the studio audience as well as what was happening on our set. We used the 3G-SDI output from the back of the camera to connect it to our switcher.

The only things I didn't test were the Ethernet connectivity and the camera's integration with the PTZOptics Hive Studio online platform. We did use the HDMI port to connect the camera to one of our monitors. Using the remote, our floor manager would zoom in to a tighter shot of the studio audience, if needed. A joystick option would make this process more streamlined—and as it turns out, PTZOptics offers a few joystick controllers that'll do the trick.

[USB-C and AVoIP]

The PTZOptics Studio 4K is a great camera choice to capture your static indoor wide shot in pristine 4K quality (though you can zoom, too). PTZOptics also offers the less expensive Studio Pro, which only offers Full HD resolution, but it might be all you need for your setup. Basically, either model is a set-it-and-forget-it option for studios, churches, city hall, and more. There's virtually no setup, plus it's compact and lightweight, delivers stellar images, and gives you total control of the recorded image.

As residential and commercial surveillance technology continues to advance, Snap One, now part of ADI, is evolving and investing in Luma by adding a new line of Luma 4K Hybrid cameras that deliver enhanced performance features and versatile designs.

The 4K Hybrid line provides customers flexible security solutions suitable for a wide range of applications. Furthermore, combined with OvrC, customers can easily adjust the mode for the end user if they prefer one mode over another without having to roll out a support truck. 

Security is further enhanced with built-in Active Deterrence. Combining built-in LED lights and audible alarm tones or preset voice annunciations, these cameras can help deter unwanted visitors and ward off break-ins by drawing attention to the scene. This is further enhanced by AI-enabled smart event analytics that allow the camera to distinguish between a person, vehicle, and non-vehicle which enhances event notification accuracy and reliability for the end user using the Luma View app.

Connect was designed for businesses and professionals demanding uncompromised video quality and clear communication, and for anyone who has struggled through a remote meeting with poor audio and visuals, thinking things would have been much smoother face-to-face. 

Videoconferencing technologies continue to evolve, keeping pace with the needs of hybrid workplaces. Conferencing audio and video quality are more important than ever for employee satisfaction and retention, and panoramic cameras are helping to create a more equitable hybrid space.

With panoramic cameras, is more always, well, more? Not necessarily. Selecting the best solution for your space involves considering several factors.

[Hybrid: The Next Generation]

Jeff Wilen, chief product officer at Owl Labs, offered several variables to consider, including the size and shape of the meeting space, device portability, location of power source, installation resources, desired experience for remote participants, and price.

Degrees of Participation

Perhaps most importantly, device location, and its impacts on image capture, may be the first thing to consider. “A 180-degree camera is meant to sit at the head of the meeting room and visually capture the entire conference room, from front to back,” explained Josh Blalock, chief video evangelist at Jabra.

In contrast, 360-degree cameras are meant to be positioned in the center of the room or conference table. “From our experience and market research, 360-degree solutions offer more context and view of the full room as the camera is typically closer to its participants, allowing for a more intimate and engaging experience with remote participants,” Wilen explained.

Blalock suggested there are many factors to consider when designing a hybrid conferencing configuration. “From a use-case standpoint, meeting room environment, the shape of the space, and the desired camera angles are key factors when deciding on a camera model,” he explained. For example, a 360-degree camera may be the best solution for rooms with long tables, allowing participants to enjoy a more face-to-face experience, while a 180-degree camera can be the best choice for spaces that can be entirely seen from the front of the room.

Incorporating a 360-degree camera into a conference space provides a “complete view of the room and allows remote participants to be fully engaged and experience the most immersive version of the conversation,” said Vivek Sekar, senior director, product management at Logitech.

“The biggest and best advantages [of a 360-degree camera] are engagement and the elevated quality of the experience for the remote participants,” Wilen agreed. “Audio quality for [in-person] meeting attendees is better distributed and more natural, regardless of where participants sit in a room or space.”

“When placed in the center of a meeting space, participants at any seat are visible in high-quality, realistic images,” added Rudolf Vitti, senior project manager, Panasonic Connect North America. “Using a multi-camera setup allows for higher resolution to capture expressive details making remote participants feel truly immersed in the room itself.”

Meeting equity is a primary consideration in designing conferencing spaces, and panoramic cameras go a long way in bringing hybrid teams together. “A 360-degree camera most notably helps extend the feeling of a ‘face-to-face’ conversation into those longer rooms with long tables,” Blalock explained, “ensuring that participants towards the back of the room don’t feel disconnected from the virtual attendees.”

Working in Space

At times there can be a tradeoff between the immersive benefits of a 360-degree camera and a sense of spatial orientation. Whereas a 180-degree camera depicts the location of in-person meeting participants around a table, this can be lost with center-of-room cameras. “For remote participants, 360-degree cameras often make it harder to grasp the spatial context of where in-room participants are seated,” Sekar noted.

In some cases, an integrated front-of-room and center-of-room camera configuration may be an ideal solution, offering the best of both worlds. “This approach provides remote participants with both a view of the room and spatial context for seating arrangements and active speakers,” Sekar continued. “For those in the meeting room, remote participants appear on the front display, with their audio originating from the same location. This setup allows in-room participants to associate voices with the displayed participants, enhancing spatial awareness for everyone involved.”

Let’s not overlook installation and cabling requirements. This is important to consider when configuring a videoconferencing space. Locating a power source, connecting to other meeting room media, internet connectivity, and required cable types all need to be taken into consideration from an installation perspective.

Adding a 360-degree camera to a conferencing setup may entail integrating it with an existing front-of-room system, noted Blalock. This can create additional cost and installation complexity. A center-of-room camera may require running additional cables through the floor, and the table may need to be modified to hide those cables (for aesthetic as well as tripping purposes).

Specific installation requirements vary from camera to camera. For example, the Logitech Sight connects and draws power through two category cables, and it comes with built-in cable management. Other cameras, such as the Meeting Owl, may need to be physically connected to a laptop in addition to a power source. And then there's the Panasonic Connect’s PressIT 360, which only requires a single USB-C cable to connect camera, microphone, and speakers to a computer.

You may also want to consider mounting options. A 360-degree camera may include micro-suction bases, whereas tripod mounts may be an option for U or V-shaped conference tables.

AI Advantages

AI-driven features in panoramic cameras such as auto-tracking and video stitching create high-quality, immersive hybrid meeting experiences. It enables both remote and in-room participants to connect more naturally, mimicking the benefits of face-to-face exchanges.

“We know that clearly seeing someone's eyes, expressions, and gestures, as well as understanding their way of speaking, is fundamental to human interaction,” said Sekar. “Auto-tracking is crucial for hybrid meetings, providing an equitable experience for remote participants and helping them feel as if they're seated at the table with their colleagues.”

Different display modes on the PressIT 360 allow participants to select the camera layout best suited for communication, Vitti explained. Each mode offers specific benefits based on the meeting’s needs, and Sekar said that variety of display modes is "crucial to keep remote participants engaged with dynamic and relevant views of the meeting. It also gives IT teams the flexibility to easily adapt to their particular environment, whether it's Microsoft, Zoom, Google Meet, or another platform.”

Sekar also noted that the Logitech Sight utilizes on-device AI to shift between camera settings based on participants’ gaze direction, which gives remote participants a front-facing view. An additional camera mode continually shifts frame and focus to recently active speakers in the in-room conversation.

Similarly, Wilen said the Meeting Owl offers a camera mode designed specifically for presenters, which allows them to move about the room while remaining in focus. Another feature allows a key presenter to remain in frame even when they are not speaking. Blalock added that the Jabra PanaCast 50 offers the option to present an in-room whiteboard and present it as digital content, offering video participants a more immersive, collaborative experience.

Potential Panoramic Cameras

Which panoramic camera is best suited to your hybrid meeting space? Here are a few to consider.

Jabra Panacast 50

[USB-C and AVoIP]

Meeting equity—it’s a term that’s been dominating conversations in Pro AV circles since the pandemic. Part of making remote workers feel like they’re an equal part of the conversation is making sure they are well represented in videoconferencing sessions. A professional webcam is part of that equation, and Insta360 has introduced two 4K models with AI technology that can help personal presentations.

With an integrated two-axis gimbal, the Insta360 Link 2 (pictured above) is the higher-end model. The mini-PTZ webcam features a 1/2-inch image sensor with 4x digital zoom, HDR support, and resolution options including 4K30, 1080p, 720p, and even 360p for the bandwidth-challenged. It also offers AI tracking of individuals and groups, whiteboard recognition, a noise-canceling microphone, and more.

Insta360 also offers the Link 2C, which shares the same technical specs but doesn’t include a gimbal. It has a more “traditional” webcam appearance, is a little smaller (2.5 inches wide and 1.2 inches high compared to 2.8 inches wide and 2.3 inches high for the Link 2), and is probably more than sufficient for the remote worker who just needs a camera for their next Teams meeting. Of course, it should surprise no one that the old production guy chose to review the Link 2. (You can see a short demo I shot near the end of this article.)

To get the most out of your webcam, you’ll want to download the free Insta360 Link controller software. The user interface provides access to precise PTZ settings, image adjustments and effects, backgrounds, audio settings, firmware updates, and more. From the software, you can also access the Desk View, which automatically tilts your camera down to provide a view of documents or other materials on your work surface. I actually used the Link 2 without the controller software on one computer—yes, it will work, but your functionality is very limited.

Connectivity is one USB-C cable on the rear of the gimbal, and the Link 2 includes a USB-C-to-USB-A adapter in case you’re out of USB-C ports on the other end. Insta360 recommends you connect the webcam to a computer or USB port that has an independent power supply, so I plugged the Link 2 into my Logi Dock’s USB-C upstream port.

Where Are You Going?

I placed the Link 2 on top of my ViewSonic curved 21:9 widescreen monitor—and it fit. Not every webcam can accommodate the thicker housing of a curved monitor, but the Link 2’s clip is wide enough to handle it. The camera has a magnetic base, so it literally just attaches to the clip and stays in place. That’s a nice touch. There’s also a 1/4-inch screw hole, so the clip can be used with a tripod. Plus, the Link 2 lets you shoot in portrait mode (with 180-degree vertical rotation), so you can create content for social media platforms when you're not in a meeting.

On the gimbal and below the camera itself is a Touch Key. It has a few functions, but its main purpose is to toggle between AI tracking and manual control. But where’s the fun in that? Why press a button when you can just tell your Link 2 what to do with a hand signal?

Yes, Insta360 has included gesture control in its Link 2 models. There are three gestures that work. First, put your hand up as if you want people to talk to the hand (if that’s still a thing) or stop in the name of love. This activates or deactivates AI tracking. When you use your forefinger and thumb to create an “L,” it activates the zoom; raise your hand to zoom in, lower it to zoom out. And the peace sign lets you enter or exit Whiteboard Mode.

AI tracking is very accurate. You can choose between three different speeds, and a Smart Composition tool lets you tell the Link 2 if you want the camera to default to a wide shot, medium shot, or medium close-up. Insta360 and I have different ideas about headroom (the Link 2 overcompensates a little too much for my taste), and the wide shot was the least aesthetically pleasing of the three defaults, but it was not easy to “fool” the AI.

However, be careful with those hand gestures, because you can turn the tracking off by mistake. If you’re staying put, you might just want to disable it. Also, the Link 2 features a 280-degree rotation, so it'll track you much further than a static webcam. Thankfully, you can create “pause tracking” areas, so the camera doesn’t follow you into parts of your office you don’t want others to see.

Whiteboard Options

A circular indicator light next to the camera lens is your guide to all things control with the Link 2. It stays green when the camera is on and blinks a couple of times when you have successfully made an adjustment via gestures, Touch Key, or the controller software. For example, if you raise your hand and turn off AI tracking—two blinks.

When you put the camera in privacy mode, the indicator light turns yellow (you also have the option to mute audio in privacy mode), and it turns blue during a firmware update. I never saw it turn solid red, but if you do, there’s a serious hardware problem.

The Link 2 offers two whiteboard options, which are most easily accessed via the Insta360 Link controller software. In Whiteboard Mode, the camera looks for corner “recognition markers” and zooms in on the area. The markers are stickers included with the camera; each one is a little smaller than 2 inches square and looks like a white L on a black square (to represent corners).

I don’t have a whiteboard in my office, so I taped some white posterboard on my wall to simulate a whiteboard. Devious reviewer that I am, I taped pennies in the corners instead, but the Link 2 wasn’t fooled. Once I put the proper recognition markers in place, the camera immediately zoomed in on the whiteboard area.

No markers? No problem. There’s also a Smart Whiteboard setting. You can let the camera scan for the whiteboard on its own, or you can manually designate the whiteboard area.

Setting the Right Tone

Let's talk a little bit about image quality: It's excellent. Pictures were crisp and the focus was fast, even shifting between my face and an object I held up in front of me. Whether I used my Brightline ZELo desktop studio lights, my office's warm overhead lighting, or opened the window shutters to add daylight into the mix, the Link 2 delivered very good skin tones.

l tend to dig into the settings and fiddle with color temperature and other details, but I couldn't improve on the automatic settings. That said, leave the blur and background functions to your videoconferencing platforms, as the Link 2 edges were a little too noticeable within its own software.

The built-in microphone was fine. It sounded tinny compared to my Sennheiser Profile USB mic, but that's probably not a fair comparison. As far as built-in webcam mics go, it was certainly clear and delivered plenty of volume.

So, how good is the Link 2? Well, taking a page from the old Folgers commercials, I secretly replaced my usual high-end 4K webcam with the Link 2 for taping a client Q&A. And nobody said a thing. I'd say that's a win.

The gimbal-free Link 2C currently sells for about $150, while the Link 2 is priced at around $200. If you just need a webcam for meetings—and you’re not going to be walking around your office—the Link 2C will do quite nicely. But if you’re a wanderer—either by choice or as a required part of your presentations—you’ll want to consider the Link 2. Either way, Insta360 has delivered a webcam line that produces lifelike, high-quality images with plenty of bells and whistles to get your remote workers ever closer to meeting equity.

Chopper Cops, a new docuseries on CBS/Paramount+, offers an unprecedented look at the Marion County Sheriff’s Department’s helicopters, operated by police pilots known as Air One. When the series took flight on CBS/Paramount+, producers relied on a selection of cameras from Marshall Electronics to capture the dynamic and high-stakes operations, including eight CV506 Miniature Full-HD Cameras, two CV568 Miniature Global Cameras with Genlock and two CV504 WP-All-Weather Micro Cameras.

Marshall’s CV506 camera was used in the interior of deputies’ cars and helicopters. This includes scenes that are captured from the dashboard of the squad cars, as well as the footage that was filmed over the shoulder of the pilot and Tactical Flight Officer (TFO). For these aerial police applications, the pilot is responsible for the safe operation of the helicopter, and the TFO is responsible for the law enforcement mission and the coordination of the ground resources. Additionally, the Marshall cameras were also used to capture some footage from the dashboard of the sheriff’s helicopter looking back at the pilot and TFO. The CV506 can capture detailed shots while maintaining an ultra-discreet miniature point-of-view perspective without sacrificing versatility or convenience.

In addition to being used in a similar capacity to the CV506, Marshall’s CV568 miniature global camera with genlock delivered synchronized, high-definition footage critical for capturing coordinated movements and actions within the vehicles and aircraft. The CV568 is built around an impressive 1/1.8-inch Sony global sensor with 25% larger pixels and interchangeable M12 lens mount.

In addition to the exterior of the sheriff helicopters, the Marshall CV504-WP camera was used to film from the exterior of the deputy squad cars. Footage captured from the exterior squad cars depicts the cars in motion and highlights the sheriff’s decals. Footage captured from the exterior sheriff helicopters includes POV from the skids that show the helicopters flying over the city, and shots of the infrared camera working on the belly of the helicopter.

Canon is collaborating with Adobe to bring Frame.io’s Camera to Cloud connectivity to select cameras. Starting with Canon's EOS C400 and EOS C80, the collaboration enables users to send proxy files directly from the camera for a faster and more secure path from production to post. The new feature, activated in-camera, will be included in a free firmware update will be available for download this winter 2024.

Mini But Mighty

Featuring an 8MP, 1/1.8-inch CMOS 4K sensor with a F1.8 eight element lens and 4x digital zoom, the Tail Air records in 4K at up to 30 fps and HD at up to 60 fps. The unit itself measures 5.2x2.88x2.73 inches and weighs slightly above 12 ounces—we’re getting close to a sparrow’s dimensions. A minor pet peeve: no lens cap.

Most PTZ cameras will record video quite well, but the Tail Air has Human Tracking, which works independently to keep the object in frame. If your subject is non-human (dogs, cats, horses, etc.), you've got the Animal Tracking feature. There's even Object Tracking, so really there's nothing this camera can’t track. This is all accomplished with Time of Flight (TOF) technology, which uses infrared light to calculate the distance between the subject and the camera.

Now that you know what the Tail Air can do, how do you get the signal to its destination? You can use the micro-HDMI port, USB-C port, or export via an Ethernet cable with a USB-C-to-Ethernet adapter as your options to send content to a screen or live stream.

Facing the unit, the camera rests on top of a gimbal. Directly below is a blue LED status indicator as well as four blue LEDs indicating the level of the battery’s charge. Around the side of the round base of the unit is the USB–C port and a microSD card slot, which is above the Micro HDMI port. On the bottom is a female 1/4-inch port for tripod mounting.

Out of the Box

The camera is stored in a zippered bag that arrived in a red box. I charged the Tail Air using the provided USB-C cable attached to a USB-A AC adapter. I also download the OBSBOT App for my iPhone. Pressing the power button activates the unit, and the gimbal adjusts itself and displays a green bar under the camera. I opened the OBSBOT Start app, selected Wi-Fi, and my Tail Air was up and running. (OBSBOT also offers a mini remote control that can control up to three Tail Air cameras, which I did not review.)

Along the left edge of the app's screen are several controls. From here, you can disconnect the camera, review camera and streaming settings, adjust audio from the Tail Air's built-in microphone, and more. Across the bottom are six icons and the record button. From here you can choose your AI mode, movement speed, tracking mode, framing, positioning, presets, and Gimbal View, where you use your finger to position the gimbal.

Try not to be overwhelmed or bogged down with all the OBSBOT’s features. My humble advice is to just place it where you want to capture your given subject and let the camera do the rest. It’s truly amazing how this Lilliputian device can frame, follow, stream, and record what the sensor captures. Using my home’s Wi-Fi, I was able to stream my video, once I had a microSD inserted.

For the ultimate in control, the Gesture Control 2.0 feature allows the on-screen talent to use hand movements to zoom in or out, lock or unlock the subject you’re tracking, and even stop or start recording. After a few minutes in trial mode, I was able to master the “gestures” and to get the camera to do what I wanted. But don’t get carried with gesture control; gestures need to be large before the camera does what you want it to do. My students tried to foil AI by doing tiny gestures close to their body and creating other gestures I won’t describe. Score 100% for the OBSBOT—it did what it was supposed to do.

There’s really not much to not like about the OBSBOT. Nothing else come close to what it does for its size and price, and the battery life has been outstanding. I’ve even become more popular because students and other faculty stop by my office to play with the “little camera.” You get high-quality video, plus the camera is small enough that it's not a distraction. It's a great choice for situations where you need to discreetly (and automatically) follow people, animals, or objects.

Two rings for focus and zoom and two dials for IRIS/ND Variable are located side-by-side, for effortlessly adjusting exposure along with focus and zoom. How many, shall we say, inexpensive webcams have you used? Yes, they do the job, as does the built-in webcam on your laptop. The results, generally speaking, are good enough. But if you’re ready to go beyond good enough, Logitech has introduced the MX Brio 705 for Business, a 4K webcam that sports an 8.5 MP sensor and a lot more features than any low-cost model out there.

As part of the review process, Logitech also provided some additional peripherals that are part of its larger workspace ecosystem. Before we dissect the MX Brio 705, let's address the other pieces they sent.

The Right Touch

First is the MX Keys Combo for Business | Gen 2 wireless keyboard/mouse combo. To test them, I swapped out my personal Logitech MK270 combo and replaced the USB-A dongle.

The MX Master 3S for Business mouse resembles a gaming mouse. It’s larger than a typical mouse, and your thumb sits cradled on the side above your work surface instead of next to the unit. Ergonomically, it fit my hand very well and probably features the smoothest scroll wheel I’ve ever used. The unit also includes a thumb scroll and additional buttons.

The first thing you’ll notice about the MX Keys for Business keyboard is that it’s heavier than most; there’s an integrated metal plate for stability that makes the unit feel more solid and robust. At first, I thought that maybe it could use a bit more tilt, but I quickly got used to the angle. An MX Palm Rest, which runs the full length of the keyboard, is included if you need it. The backlit keyboard makes it easier to type in darker rooms, but the backlight shuts off after about 15 seconds of inactivity to save battery life. You can also shut off the backlight if you don’t like it.

Both the keyboard and mouse have lithium polymer (LiPo) batteries, which are recharged (separately) via USB-C. According to Logitech, the mouse can last for up to 70 days on a full charge, while the keyboard can last for maybe 10 days. A pulsing green light indicates charging—and yes, you can use either device during the charging process.

Assuming you don’t have a KVM switch, the “Easy-Switch” feature allows you to share the set between three different computers via Bluetooth. If you want to customize your mouse and/or keyboard, you’re going to need that Bluetooth connection and the Logi Options+ app. Bluetooth is also what enables added interconnectivity between peripherals.

Considering I write and edit (read: type) for a living, I am choosy about my keyboards. The MX Keys has a wonderful, responsive feel, with indented “Perfect Stroke” keys to match your fingertips. Both the full-size keyboard and mouse are very quiet, making my MK270 combo loud by comparison (and I assure you it’s pretty quiet). Be warned: These are excellent peripherals and will spoil you quickly.

In the Zone

Also in the mix is the Zone Wireless 2, a Bluetooth headset with “digital hybrid” ANC that has a rotating mic so you can wear it on either side of your face. (Point the mic straight up to engage mute.) The on-board controls are contained on one ear cup, with one toggle handling power and Bluetooth pairing, one button for ANC, one button for call (answer and hang up), and a USB-C port for charging.

As I’ve done in the past, I created an unreasonable scenario for testing the headset’s ANC capabilities: listening to The Who’s “You Better You Bet” via a Bluetooth connection to my iPhone while testing my portable generator (you can never be too prepared for hurricane season in South Florida). Thumbs up for Logitech, as the song came through loud and clear while my generator was reduced to significantly muffled background noise. During another test—a Google Meet in a generator-free office—I was told I sounded great. Also got passing marks for a good ol’ fashioned phone call.

While nicely padded, the headset is heavier than similar models I’ve tested. Also, even when tweaked with the Logi Tune app (more on that later), the Zone Wireless 2 audio simply lacked the fidelity of other headsets. These will not be your go-to option for music, but they work well for videoconferencing. 

Abundant Adjustments

Now, let’s talk about the MX Brio 705 for Business. It’s about 4 inches wide, with an oversized lens area that creates a pleasing, professional look. Logitech includes a thick, sturdy USB-C cable to connect the unit to your computer. There’s also an integrated manual lens cover, so there’s no question when your camera is closed. A horizontal LED lights up when you make a change, such as activating the dual beamforming microphones on either end of the unit, which I was told sounded as good as the mic in my speakerphone.

To get the most out of the MX Brio 705, you need to download the Logi Tune app. This is the interface that brings the camera to life. The camera can also be setup through the Logitech G Hub app, but that’s more for gamers and has limited controls. I tried both—save yourself some hard drive space and stick with Logi Tune.

With Logi Tune, you can select your video quality between 720p, 1080p, 2K, and 4K. Want HDR? That’s an option, too. A handful of filters make it easy to have a dramatically different on-camera look, but you can also manually adjust exposure, white balance, brightness, and more.

That said, you might just want to leave it in auto, because it really produces a nice image, particularly if you have good lighting (thank you, Brightline ZELo). As expected, I had no problems connecting to various videoconferencing platforms, including Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams, and the MX Brio 705 performed well with both static and motion virtual backgrounds.

When you connect the MX Keys Combo via Bluetooth instead of USB, it adds a new layer of functionality. For example, you can mute your mic via the keyboard during a videoconferencing session, whether you’re using the webcam or Zone Wireless 2 headset. They all play nice via USB, but that extra level of interactivity is tied to Bluetooth connectivity.

Show and Track

An interesting feature is Show Mode, which Logitech has included in some of its webcams for a couple of years. Basically, the MX Brio 705 mount includes a hinge, so you can tilt the camera forward more than 90 degrees to display documents or objects on your work surface. The camera sits comfortably atop your monitor, and a sticky patch on the back of the mount clip adheres to the back of your monitor (no, it’s not permanent) to prevent your camera from falling.

If you plan to use Show Mode, the sticky patch is non-negotiable to keep the MX Brio 705 in place, and you’ll likely still need to brace the camera with one hand as you tilt it with the other. Personally, I’m not crazy about messing with a webcam once it’s in place—but if you regularly need to show things to your team, it’s probably a good feature to have.

The standout feature for the MX Brio 705 is RightSight, which will track you when you move—within reason, of course. This isn’t a PTZ camera, so it can’t follow you around the room, but it does a solid job making sure you stay framed. RightSight offers a choice of three framing distances and framing speeds; I preferred the results from the closer framing distance and faster tracking.

You can also shut RightSight off if you find it distracting, though it didn’t spring into action unless I made a major shift. In other words, your shot isn't in a constant state of micro-adjustments. With RightSight disabled, you can change the camera’s field of view, from a wide 90 degrees (to accommodate more than one participant) to a relatively narrow 65 degrees. From there you can zoom as well as manually frame your shot.

Priced at $199, Logitech’s MX Brio 705 for Business is loaded with bells and whistles. Like so many other peripherals, you’ll need an app to make the most of it. While many people will set it and forget it, I appreciate having the option to manually adjust the picture and field of view. RightSight is a smooth, responsive tracking system, and the built-in microphones go above and beyond what you’d expect from a webcam.

Canon U.S.A. introduced its new Canon EOS C400 cinema camera. Designed with the film and live production markets in mind, the new camera comes equipped with a native RF-mount and full-frame, back-illuminated stacked CMOS sensor. Canon is also unveiled its first MOUNT ADAPTER PL-RF, and an RF-mount version of the CINE-SERVO 17-120mm cinema lens.

For the first time in the cinema EOS system, the Canon EOS C400 camera features a newly developed 6K full-frame, back-illuminated CMOS sensor, with triple-base ISO, allowing the camera to deliver enhanced imagery in a wide range of lighting conditions. The base ISOs of 800, 3200, and 12,800 maximize the full dynamic range of the camera.

An additional benefit of the EOS C400 camera’s sensor is the support for the next generation of Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS Autofocus, Dual Pixel AF II. The back-illuminated stacked positioning offers better light-capturing efficiency, which widens the area of the sensor that can be used for autofocusing. The sensor also empowers faster readout speed, as well as better 4K image quality from 6K oversampling.

The EOS C400 camera records in 6K full frame up to 60p in 12-bit Cinema RAW Light. By changing the sensor mode, the camera can record 4K RAW up to 120fps and 2K RAW up to 180fps. This is all recorded in Canon’s latest iteration of Cinema RAW Light, which provides three different recording modes to choose from depending on your file size preference and workflow.

For live productions, the EOS C400 camera body features a dedicated 12-pin lens terminal for broadcast and cine-servo lenses, a variety of output and input interfaces including mini-XLR audio inputs, DIN connectors for time code, genlock and return video, 12G-SDI and 3G-SDI monitor outputs, a full-size HDMI output, built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, Ethernet and much more. The camera also features SRT protocol for IP streaming of video and audio. For shooting scenarios where the camera will be controlled remotely, you can use the Ethernet port or Wi-Fi connectivity to enable remote control, including support for the Canon Multi-Camera Control app, browser remotes, or the Canon RC-IP100 or RC-IP1000 controllers via use of the included XC protocol.

Additionally, Cannon introduced its:

• CINE-SERVO 17-120mm Cinema Lens: This latest cinema lens from Canon builds upon the legacy of the company’s CINE-SERVO line, with the added benefit of a native RF mount. The additional pins of the RF mount increase communication with RF-mount cameras such as the EOS C400, enabling auto focus, distortion correction and metadata output for virtual productions. The lens comes in either RF or PL mount configurations, with the PL mount version supporting ZEISS eXtended Data and ARIA (Automatic Restoration of Illumination Attenuation)1.
• PL to RF Mount Adaptor: Canon is also introducing the newly developed MOUNT ADAPTER PL-RF. This adapter opens up a broad range of PL mount lenses to the EOS C400 camera. The adapter maintains compatibility for Cooke i/Technology metadata communication between camera and lens and includes locking plates to help achieve maximum mount strength. Empty list

There was a whole lot of new panning, tilting, and zooming going on at 2024 NAB Show in Las Vegas in April, and it's likely to continue at InfoComm in June (right back at the Las Vegas Convention Center). Several manufacturers announced new PTZ camera models that promise better workflows, more responsive operation, and AI-assisted tracking.

NDI is not a standard feature found in all PTZ cameras, but it's getting pretty close. In fact, a few days after NAB, Bolin Technology announced a new partnership with NDI. The PTZ manufacturer has incorporated NDI in 10 models across its PTZ camera line, as well as its KBD-1020N PTZ controller and EG40N decoder. Meanwhile, PTZOptics announced its Move SE camera was upgraded to be NDI|HX native. The company is providing a free upgrade to existing customers via a firmware update—and is offering a refund to customers who had previously purchased an NDI license.

At the BirdDog booth, it was all about the fit and finish of its new X1 (Full HD) and X1 Ultra (UHD) PTZs. Talk about great features. The tally light borders the entire lens housing, so there's never a question which camera is live. Then there's NDI|HX2 and NDI|HX3 support as well as an integrated NDI|HX decoder for confidence monitoring or prompter. Toss in AI-based tracking and Ethernet with PoE and Wi-Fi connectivity options, too. But the big reveal was an e-Ink label on the camera body, which provides an easy way to identify cameras and more without gaffer's tape.

Two new PTZs at the Datavideo booth, the PTC-285 and PTC-305, both deliver 4K60 images and include auto-tracking technology that's designed to avoid jerky camera moves. Plus, both cameras are compatible with ONVIF Profile S, a protocol that transmits audio and video, as well as PTZ camera control signals, into video production systems produced by several manufacturers, thus promoting interoperability between brands. The PTC-305 offers 20x optical zoom, while the PTC-285 offers 12x optical zoom. Both cameras are also available with HDBaseT support (PTC-305T and PTC-285T). In related news, Datavideo's recent upgrade of its SHOWCAST 100 4K Production Studio adds AI technology to customize and control auto-tracking cameras.

JVC Professional Video was definitely playing the long game at NAB—its KY-PZ540 PTZ features 40x optical zoom in 1080p/60 using the company's Variable Scan Mapping technology. With a 1 1/8-inch CMOS image sensor, it also delivers 4K60 imagery with 20x optical zoom. Designed for event and sports facilities, as well as megachurches and other large venues, it includes extensive I/O options (including USB UVC for videoconferencing) and features built-in NDI|HX3. Plus, it supports SRT for REMI production, and offers simultaneous NDI, SRT, and RMPS output for high-quality streaming output to popular CDNs.

[How JVC PTZ Cameras and Camera Remote Controllers Provide Versatility]

One of the rare new models without NDI is the CV612 PTZ from Marshall Electronics. Available in black or white, the Full HD camera features a HD CMOS sensor, 12x optical zoom, and AI-powered auto tracking. Marshall is targeting the worship and education markets, as well as livestreaming, with the CV612, which offers simultaneous 3G-SDI, HDMI, and USB-C outputs, plus PoE+ and various control interfaces.

OBSBOT made a big splash with a small PTZ. The new Tail Air may fit in your suit jacket pocket, but it's packed with features. It delivers 4K30 or 1080p/60 imagery and 4x zoom. Integrated Gesture Control 2.0 allows the talent to control the shooting process, including zoom, the AI-based auto tracking, and start/stop recording with specific hand motions. You can even purchase a Smart Remote Controller, which resembles a micro-CCU and controls up to three Tail Air cameras via Bluetooth. OBSBOT's Kevin Liu said the unit is designed for low-cost streaming in schools and corporate environments. It offers livestream support for several platforms as well as NDI|HX3.

Specifically targeting education and corporate video markets, Panasonic's new AW-UE30 PTZ camera delivers 4K30 imagery and features a 20x optical zoom and a 74.1-degree field of view. Part of the Pro Series, it supports the SRT streaming protocol, among others. A new direct drive motor system is designed for quiet, responsive operation. Panasonic's Jim Jensen, senior category owner, PTZs, said the new camera "fills a really nice niche for us."

Sony unveiled its BRC-AM7, a compact PTZ equipped with an integrated lens and Exmor RS CMOS image sensor that supports 4K60 and 4K HDR imagery. The camera offers 20x optical zoom and includes Sony's AI-based PTZ Auto Framing technology for advanced tracking of on-screen talent. Its newly developed brushless motor offers quiet and (very) fast movement. Designed for live events, sports, and broadcasting, the BRC-AM7 supports PoE++ and is compatible with the FreeD protocol for AR and VR applications. It also sports extensive connectivity ports, including 12G-SDI and HDMI outputs, 3G-SDI monitor output, 3.5mm stereo input, and two XLR connectors.
