Optoma has announced it has joined the Microsoft Device Ecosystem Platform (MDEP) community. The company is a leader in projection, large-format and interactive display technologies, spanning digital signage, LED video walls, interactive flat panels and professional projectors for retail, education, corporate and public venues.

This milestone marks a significant step in Optoma’s strategy to deliver secure, scalable and enterprise-ready visual solutions that integrate seamlessly into Microsoft-managed workplace environments. Through its participation in MDEP, Optoma is aligning its future product platforms with Microsoft’s device, security and management standards to better support modern workspaces, meeting rooms and in-building digital signage.

MDEP is an enterprise-grade software platform built on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). Designed to meet the highest standards of security, reliability, ease of deployment, and innovation, MDEP gives enterprises and device makers a consistent, customer-ready foundation for building and deploying devices at scale. By joining the MDEP community, Optoma is strengthening its ability to deliver solutions that meet the evolving requirements of IT, AV and facilities teams operating within Microsoft-centric environments.

Vanco International's owner Brad Corbin has passed away. Corbin studied engineering at Georgia Tech; he joined Vanco as president in 1999 and acquired the company in 2007, spearheading its transition from a regional distributor to a trusted global provider of professional audiovisual equipment. He was 78.

Corbin helped guide the company through decades of growth and industry change. Under his leadership, Vanco was one of the first companies to introduce HDMI cables into the U.S. market. He laid the foundation for the introduction of Evolution, Vanco’s curated line of professional AV distribution products, and PulseAudio, the company’s audio accessories line. In 2017, Corbin led Vanco’s acquisition of Beale Street, expanding Vanco’s offerings to include internationally recognized premium audio products. Thanks to Corbin’s stewardship, Vanco transformed into an AV distribution and audio solutions manufacturer serving customers around the world.

In 2018, Corbin passed day-to-day leadership of Vanco to his son, Mark. He remained actively involved in the company as CEO until his passing.

“My father’s commitment to the audiovisual industry was lifelong. He built the culture of service, innovation, and ambition that drives Vanco today,” said Mark Corbin, president of Vanco International. “He was a model leader at Vanco and an even better father and grandfather. I will always be grateful for the legacy he built.”

Corbin loved fishing and golfing near his home on Amelia Island, FL, as well as spending time with his family. He reveled in being a grandfather and will be remembered for his sense of humor, larger-than-life personality, and expansive heart. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Susan Corbin; his son Matthew Corbin and daughter-in-law Elizabeth Corbin; and son Mark Corbin, daughter-in-law Lindsey Corbin, and grandchildren Chloe, Ava, and Hayden Corbin.

PSNI Global Alliance announced the passing of Thomas Joseph “Tom”, “Tommy” Roberts, director of vendor programs, who died on Friday, May 1, 2026. Roberts spent more than four decades in the Pro AV industry and was widely respected for his work in systems integration and his direction of PSNI’s vendor partner program.

For more than 20 years, Roberts served PSNI Global Alliance as the leader of the organization’s Preferred Vendor Partner Program. Under his leadership, the program grew into a highly regarded vendor-affiliate framework within the AV industry, delivering measurable value to integrators and manufacturers alike and setting a benchmark for collaboration across the global alliance community.

Prior to joining PSNI, Roberts built and led two successful AV integration businesses alongside his longtime business partner of more than 40 years, Chris Miller, executive director of PSNI Global Alliance. The pair acquired Fairview AFX and grew it into a nationally recognized systems integration firm with offices across Oklahoma, Texas, and Arkansas. Roberts later served as president of the South Central region for MSCI before bringing his entrepreneurial spirit and deep industry relationships to PSNI Global Alliance.

Throughout his career, Roberts was an active contributor to AIA, IEEE, InfoComm, ITVA, NAB, PBS, SBE, and SMPTE, and served in an advisory capacity to numerous associations and manufacturers. He was widely recognized within the AV community for his work with various manufacturers, distributors and service providers.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Roberts was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and a generous presence in the lives of his extended family and colleagues. He carried a lifelong passion for technology and a curiosity about how things worked—an interest that animated his entire career and his contributions to the AV community.

With the geopolitical situation in the Middle East remaining unpredictable, AVIXA has revised its plans for AV industry engagement in the region. InfoComm EDGE, originally scheduled for October 2026 at the Festival Arena in Dubai, will now take place October 27-28, 2027, at the same location.

AVIXA will also host a highly curated, invitation-only EDGE Preview in Dubai, Q4 2026, with confirmed dates to come. Positioned as a focused working forum, EDGE Preview will bring together senior decision-makers and end users across key sectors—government and enterprise, leisure and entertainment, education, and retail—alongside AV industry stakeholders and international consultants.

“The positive response to our announcement of InfoComm EDGE earlier this year reinforced a clear market need for a different kind of event—one focused on how integrated AV delivers real-world outcomes,” said David Labuskes, CTS, CAE, CEO of AVIXA. “After close consultation with our partners in the region, we’ve taken a deliberate decision to move the full event to 2027 to ensure it lands with maximum impact—particularly at a time when government bodies are aligning investment decisions with long-term strategic priorities.”

Planning for InfoComm EDGE continues, with regional integration firms now beginning to submit design proposals for the event’s core activations—each focused on demonstrating how integrated AV performs in real-world environments and delivers measurable outcomes.

Central to this process is the InfoComm EDGE End User Council, a growing collective of regional organizations providing direct input into the design and evaluation of these activations through the lens of enterprise and operational impact. The Council now includes a dozen confirmed participants, including Emirates Airlines, du, Dubai Roads and Transport Authority, Sharjah Education Academy, Atlantis, Miral Asset Management, and Jollibee.

“Our commitment to AV in the Middle East remains clear, and this approach ensures we remain closely aligned with the needs and priorities of the region at a critical time,” added Labuskes. “The EDGE Preview this year is a deliberate step—bringing together the right stakeholders to focus on how AV can deliver meaningful impact now, while shaping the foundation for InfoComm EDGE 2027.”

SOC 2 (System and Organization Controls), developed by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), is a recognized auditing standard for data security. Type 1 certification confirms that Uniguest’s systems and controls are appropriately designed to meet strict criteria for security, availability and confidentiality at a specific point in time.

As organizations increasingly deploy AV and digital engagement platforms across corporate networks, security and compliance have become critical considerations. After more than a decade of shared responsibility as co-CEOs, Daniel and Dr. Andreas Sennheiser will take on different roles within the Sennheiser Group. Daniel Sennheiser will become chairman of the board of directors, while his brother will continue as CEO, overseeing the operational business of the family-owned company.

In his new role, Daniel will focus on the strategic direction of the Sennheiser Group. "By joining the board of directors, I will concentrate more on the long-term development of the company and on continuously strengthening key customer relationships. I will continue to work closely with my brother Andreas in his role as CEO and with the existing executive management board," he said.

Andreas Sennheiser will continue to lead the company as CEO and, together with the executive management board, manage the operational business. "This new structure enables us to combine day-to-day business with strategic foresight, which is crucial for the future success of the Sennheiser Group," he added.

Daniel and Andreas will continue to pursue their shared goal of driving sustainable and independent growth for the Sennheiser Group and building the future of audio. "I look forward to this next chapter of our family business, which has successfully evolved over three generations. Progress means shaping change positively—both for me in my new role and for Sennheiser as a company," Daniel explained.

Daniel Sennheiser succeeds Andreas Dornbracht, who has served as chairman of the board for the past four years. Dornbracht will remain on the board as a member and continue his work alongside the other board members.

The Professional Audio Visual Society of Canada (PAVS.CA) was launched on July 7, with a national mission to foster a connected, inclusive, and forward-thinking AV community. On Thursday afternoon at Xchange Live, the AVIXA Foundation presented its 2025 Brad Sousa Impact Fund grant winners. The Fund, named in honor of the late Brad Sousa, CTO at Forté, offers financial support for people, programs, and partners utilizing audiovisual technology and digital transformation in communities around the world.

Jarrod Sousa, Brad’s son, took to the stage to explain why the event had special meaning on that particular day. “Today is actually his birthday,” he said. “I cannot think of a better birthday present to Dad than to be able to stand up here and remember his legacy and celebrate the impact he had on this industry by awarding these grants to three amazing organizations.”

The 2025 Brad Sousa Impact Fund grant winners are:

Rosie Riveters: Rosie Riveters is a nonprofit fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills of young women through hands-on STEM learning in communities around the United States. “We’re very excited about Rosie Riveter’s program success using music to discover careers in Pro AV,” said Sarah Joyce, AVIXA chief global officer and foundation executive director. The organization will use its grant to scale the reach of its STEM kits into even more communities, driving further awareness of AV careers.

Tech25: Tech25 is a nonprofit organization founded to address the growing demand for skilled AV broadcast and event technicians. It offers youth and adults technical skills, certifications prep, and hands-on experience needed to secure living-wage careers. “Tech25 transforms lives and creates career pathways for those who have historically been unaware of our dynamic industry,” shared Joyce. Tech25 has an incredible program completion rate, with 30 alumni placed in full-time industry roles in only a few years.

WorkSource Montgomery (WSM): WSM’s goal is to ensure all residents in its region have access to career pathways leading to equitable and sustainable economic mobility, with a specific focus on high-demand fields like AV and IT. “WSM is a cornerstone in workforce development, and we are proud to offer a grant in Brad’s honor to help them build more direct talent pipelines into our industry,” said Joyce. With its grant, WSM intends to launch a dedicated AV and technology-focused LYFE cohort for young adult career exploration, hands-on work experience, and pathways to internships and full-time employment.

SMPTE has introduced the board officers and regional governors who started serving their terms at the beginning of January.

Three SMPTE officers are continuing their service, each for an additional two-year term from Jan 1, 2024, to Dec 31, 2025. The re-elected officers include standards vice president Sally Hattori, finance vice president Paul Stechly, and membership vice president Rose Lockwood. They will continue to serve alongside current board officers president Renard T. Jenkins, EVP Richard Welsh, education director Michael Zink, secretary Lisa Hobbs, and past president Hans Hoffmann.

The AVIXA Foundation, the charitable arm of the Audiovisual and Integrated Experience Association, has created the Brad Sousa Impact Fund to support the Foundation’s work with a key focus on developing audiovisual and digital transformation professionals and their understanding of each other’s overlapping needs. The AVIXA Foundation provides access to AV skills education, career pathways, and valuable hands-on experiences to inspire the next generation of leaders in the audiovisual industry.

Brad Sousa, beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend, and mentor, passed away on November 8, 2023, in Austin, TX, at the age of 62. Sousa was the chief technology officer of AVI Systems and served on the AVIXA Board of Directors. He had recently been elected by AVIXA’s global membership to serve as Secretary-Treasurer with intended ascendancy toward the Chairman of the Board. In addition, Sousa served on the board of the AVIXA Foundation.

“While the hole that Brad has left in this world will never be filled, it is with great pride and joy that I see this opportunity for Brad’s passion to help others and passion to advance the audiovisual industry be combined in the form of a lasting legacy to his career and life,” Janele Sousa, Sousa’s wife, shared.

He was committed to making a difference in all his pursuits, whether personal or professional. It is with this lesson of his in mind that the AVIXA Foundation created the Brad Sousa Impact Fund.

“Brad joined AVI Systems more than 15 years ago and was instrumental in elevating our industry and the work our employees do across industries and around the world," said Jeff Stoebner, CEO of AVI Systems. "Establishing this fund in his name is a fitting continuation of that work.”

AVIXA recently announced the election results for the 2024 AVIXA Board of Directors and Leadership Search Committee.

Brad Sousa, CTO, AVI Systems, had been elected as secretary-treasurer of the board by AVIXA membership prior to suddenly passing away on November 8, 2023. The Leadership Search Committee will be announcing a special election for the secretary-treasurer position prior to the end of the year.

Michael Bridwell, vice president, commercial sales, Sonance, has been elected by AVIXA members to the Leadership Search Committee. In addition, Martin Saul, chair of the Board of Directors, has appointed Pedro Valletta, CEO, interproAV, and Juan José Vila, CSO, Equipson, to the Leadership Search Committee.

[AVIXA Report: Sales Growth Rebounds as U.S. GDP Stuns]

The AVIXA Foundation’s elAVate Scholarship supports the growth of women and gender equality in the AV industry. The 2023 recipient is Megan Duncan, a California State University, Northridge (CSUN) student pursuing a master’s degree in educational technology. Duncan graduated from Western Washington University with a B.A. in technical theatre. In 2021, she joined the CSUN Academic Technology team as an instructional and media technologist to help the university ramp up its remote learning, hybrid, and Hyflex environments.

The Michael Vergauwen Scholarship honors the legacy of the late Michael Vergauwen, former COO of AVI Systems and long-time AVIXA board member. This year’s recipient is Kaela Patterson, a senior at UC San Diego working on a bachelor’s degree in visual arts media. She is very passionate about storytelling and hopes to work in the entertainment industry as a filmmaker, photographer, and AV technician. 

The Mosaic Scholarship was conceived by AVIXA's Diversity Council in support of further inclusivity within the global AV industry. It seeks to shine a light on individuals whose experience, background, and thinking will positively influence the future of the AV community. Thanks to donations by Legrand and Exertis Almo, the AVIXA Foundation was able to award four scholarships this year.

[AVIXA, Microsoft to Offer Microsoft Teams Rooms Training]

Recipient lo Arteaga began their tech journey with a self-study of JavaScript, which sparked a passion for software development. They are currently completing the CodeOp Software Engineering Bootcamp. Upon doing a lot of research into various niche development opportunities, Arteaga came across AV engineering and would love to pursue further education and certificates related to this field.

A Mosaic Scholarship was also awarded to Ashay Dave, who is pursuing a master’s degree in music engineering technology at the University of Miami. He was the audio engineer and one of the lead developers of Mangrove City VR, a project that won an Auggie Award at AWE 2023 for “Best Educating About Solutions to Climate Change.”

Mosaic Scholarship recipient Faith Pierce is a morning show producer for iHeartMedia. In 2022, she graduated with a bachelor's degree in sound and recording arts from the University of Southern Mississippi. Pierce is currently enrolled in the music production master's program at Berklee College of Music and is expected to complete her studies in 2024.

A Mosaic Scholarship was also awarded to Hanni Shahatto, a recent honors graduate and a current intern at the Ontario Institute of Audio Recording Technology (OIART). Prior to attending OIART, he led several equity-based initiatives as a schoolteacher and aims to extend these efforts to his audio engineering career. Shahatto’s long-term goal is to become a re-recording mixer for film and to pave a pathway to audio for others from marginalized communities.

[Diversified, AVIXA Strike Key Three-Year Agreement]

This scholarship program is part of the AVIXA Foundation’s initiative to support workforce development in the Pro AV industry. The Foundation supports workforce development by creating awareness of careers in the global AV industry; enabling potential and emerging professionals through skills training, scholarships, and scholastic support; and developing a bridge between the industry and those who want to become AV professionals.

SMPTE will honor some of the industry's top minds and organizations at its annual Awards Gala, Thursday, Oct. 19, at the conclusion of the 2023 SMPTE Media Technology Summit. The Gala, sponsored by Warner Bros. Discovery, will take place in the Ray Dolby Ballroom within the Ovation Hollywood.

"One of the great joys of SMPTE is to honor the work of those who often go unseen by the public," SMPTE executive director David Grindle stated. "Without whose contributions to media production and distribution, that same public would not enjoy the media they do."

This year, 17 honors will be bestowed upon 35 individuals and organizations. Among these is the supreme accolade of the Society, Honorary Membership, which recognizes individuals who have performed eminent service in the advancement of engineering in motion pictures, television, or in the allied arts and sciences, counting the likes of Thomas Edison, George Eastman, Samuel L. Warner, David Sarnoff, Walt Disney, Ray Dolby, George Lucas, Richard Edlund, James Cameron, and Peter Jackson among its ranks. This year, Honorary Membership will be conferred on Philipp Lawo, in recognition of his pioneering of audio and media networking technology, which has significantly advanced broadcast facilities and live production including the world's largest live sporting events.

[Blueprint for Success: Dance in the Rain]

The Progress Medal, established in 1935, is the Society's most prestigious medal award and recognizes outstanding technical contributions to the progress of engineering phases of the motion-imaging industries. This year, the Society will recognize John Christopher Gaeta for his contributions to Virtual Cinema, Volumetric Capture, and "Bullet Time" in the original Matrix film trilogy.

The Natalie M. and Herbert T. Kalmus Medal was established in 1955 and renamed in 2020. The award recognizes outstanding contributions that reflect a commitment to the highest standards of quality and innovation in motion picture post-production and distribution services. This year, SMPTE will honor Douglas Walker for his contributions to the motion picture industry, including as chief architect of the OpenColorIOv2 open-source project, a robust color management solution widely adopted in motion picture production and post-production workflows, and his work on the implementation of the Common LUT Format (CLF), a cross-platform mechanism for communicating complex color management transforms.

The Samuel L. Warner Memorial Medal, sponsored by Warner Bros. Discovery, was established in 1946 and recognizes outstanding contributions in the design and development of new and improved methods and/or apparatus for motion picture sound. This year, Rolv Gjestland will be recognized for his contributions to cinema auditorium design in all presentation aspects, including sound and picture.

The David Sarnoff Medal, sponsored by SRI International, was established in 1950 and recognizes outstanding contributions to the development of new techniques or equipment that have improved the engineering phases of television technology. This year, Michael A. Dolan will be honored for his significant contributions to the development and implementation of the ATSC 3.0 digital transmission standard's IMSC1 IP-based closed-captioning standard.

[Welcome to the AV Renaissance] 

The Excellence in Education Medal, sponsored by William C. Miller and Ellen Sontag-Miller, was established in 2016 and recognizes outstanding contributions to new or unique educational programs that teach the technologies of motion imaging and advance the educational process through innovative and inspirational methods. This year, SMPTE recognizes Dr. Wolfgang Ruppel for his contributions to media technology education in Germany, particularly during more than 15 years leading the engineering department at RheinMain University.

The Workflow Systems Medal, sponsored by Leon D. Silverman, was established in 2012 and recognizes outstanding contributions related to the development and integration of workflows that enhance creativity, collaboration, efficiency, or novel approaches to the production, post-production, or distribution process. This year, SMPTE will honor OpenColorIO for its open standard color management solution, designed for media production, emphasizing visual effects and computer animation.

The Digital Processing Medal was established in 2012 and recognizes significant technical achievements related to the development of digital processing of content for motion pictures, television, games, or other related media. This year, the award will be presented to Karlheinz Brandenburg in recognition of his fundamental contributions to developing MPEG digital audio compression systems.

The Camera Origination and Imaging Medal was established in 2012 and recognizes significant technical achievements related to invention or advances in imaging technology. This year, SMPTE will recognize Rudolf P. Koppe for developing the technology that enabled the transmission of full bandwidth HD camera signals over existing triax cable, allowing a rapid transition to high-definition television production in the studio and at remote locations.

The James A. Lindner Archival Technology Medal, sponsored by Lindner, was established in 2012 and recognizes significant technical advancements or contributions related to the archive or preservation of media content essence. This year, Richard D. Wright will be honored for more than three decades of leadership in audiovisual preservation, which has contributed significantly to developing quality standards in large-scale archival digitization initiatives.

The Excellence in Standards Award recognizes those who have been actively involved in advancing the Society's standards, activities, and processes. This year's award will be presented to Florian Schleich for his tireless efforts as SMPTE Standards Vice-President and chair of the 35PM technology committee. The Louis F. Wolf Jr. Memorial Scholarship is designed to assist students in furthering their undergraduate or graduate studies in motion pictures and television, with an emphasis on technology. The 2023 scholarship will be awarded to SMPTE Student Member José Solé of New York University.

The Citation for Outstanding Service to the Society recognizes dedicated service to SMPTE, particularly at the Section level. This year, three individuals will be honored with this award: David Edwin Acker, for his unwavering dedication to producing outstanding content for the New England Section meetings; Charles R. Diehl, for his diligent efforts to enhance the programming and meeting quality for the Philadelphia Section; and Ian MacSpadden, for his tireless efforts in assisting students and Sections, particularly his work on the SMPTE Discord Server setup, enabling more effective engagement with Student Chapters.

The Presidential Proclamation recognizes individuals of established and outstanding status and reputation in the motion picture and television industries worldwide. Wendy Aylsworth will be recognized for her decades of service to the production technology industry and her trailblazing work, which paved the way for women in such male-dominated fields as aerospace engineering, production engineering, and animation technology and operations. Peter Wharton will be posthumously recognized for his numerous contributions to SMPTE and the broadcast technology industry, including his passion for mentoring and creating opportunities for underrepresented groups within the industry.

The Journal Award for the best paper originally published in the SMPTE Motion Imaging Journal during 2022 will be presented to Michael D. Smith and Michael Zink for their paper, "Hue-Preserving Color Transforms for LED Wall Virtual Production Workflows," published in the November 2022 issue. Additionally, the Journal Certificate of Merit will be awarded to Brad Gilmer and Grant Hammond for their paper, "Workflow as a Service Delivered by the Dynamic Media Services Architecture," published in the October 2022 issue.

Fourteen new SMPTE Fellows will be recognized at this year's Gala for attaining an outstanding rank among engineers or executives in media and entertainment through their proficiency and contributions to the motion-picture, television, or related industries. These individuals are Mark Aitken, John Ellerton, Martin P. Feldman, Cristina Gomila, Frank Governale, James L. Helman, Polly Hickling, Ievgen Kostiukevych, Madeleine Noland, Peter H. Putman, Charles Q. Robinson, Chris Arley Seeger, Simon Thompson, and Kelly T. Williams.

NSCA welcomed the new 2023-2024 NSCA and NSCA Education Foundation leadership on July 1, 2023. The new NSCA leadership includes a new president, as well as many other NSCA leadership changes and the addition of a new officer to its board of directors for 2023-2024.

“Communication Company joined NSCA in 2005-2006, but I didn’t fully utilize all of its resources at the time,” said Dan Schmidtendorff, president and CEO at Communication Company and current NSCA vice president, who assumed the role of NSCA Board of Directors president. “I didn’t realize the tools NSCA had available to us until years later. From Day One of going to that first NSCA event, it’s been life changing. I look forward to helping more integrators find and benefit from NSCA resources like we have.”

Schmidtendorff replaced Ray Bailey, who is president at Lone Star Communications. His term as president ended on June 30, 2023. Bailey will serve as NSCA’s immediate past president, replacing Mike Boettcher, vice president at Edge, who will remain as a board member.

Dale Bottcher, executive vice president of global sales and marketing at AVI-SPL and current NSCA secretary, will become NSCA vice president; Brad Caron, president and owner at SIGNET Electronic Systems, will become NSCA secretary. Christina DeBono, president at ClearTech Media, will remain NSCA treasurer.

Shure is increasing its focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) initiatives by announcing a new “STEM for STEM” program.

This program will provide donations to various global STEM-based organizations (or STEAM-based organizations) based on each Stem Ecosystem product sold by Shure.

For more than 60 years, Mrs. Rose L. Shure served as an inspiration to all Shure associates, past and present. She was a role model for Shure’s Core Values and basic principles, created by her husband and company founder, Sidney N. Shure.

President and CEO Chris Schyvinck began her career at Shure more than 30 years ago as a quality control engineer—one of the few engineers at the time in the industry—before becoming president and CEO in 2016 after Mrs. Shure passed away.

“Providing resources for young adults, especially young women and people of color, to learn more about science and technology is a passion for me,” said Schyvinck. “So many STEM organizations are doing a great job of inspiring and developing our next generation of leaders and we are proud to support this important cause.”

In celebration of International Women’s Day, AV Gives today launches its 2023 fundraising campaign and networking initiatives in support of Rosie Riveters, a non-profit organization that empowers young girls by building personal confidence, critical thinking and problem-solving skills through hands-on, community-based STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) programs. 

Under the direction of co-founders and AV industry professionals Erica Carroll and Jennifer Goodyer, AV Gives’ 2023 goals share a common purpose of engaging and inspiring girls through STEM projects while showcasing the professional AV industry as a rewarding career path. Erica and Jennifer last year banded with The AVIXA Women’s Council and Brittany Greer, Executive Director and Founder of Rosie Riveters, to raise money and support STEM programs for Rosie Riveters through the AV industry. Their combined efforts far exceeded expectations.

“We quickly surpassed an initial 2022 fundraising goal of providing $5000 for STEM kits,” said Carroll, also senior manager, product training and adoption for Mersive. “We were soon challenged to set a more aggressive goal of $30,000, and in the end raised nearly $35,000. We have challenged ourselves this year to meet an initial $30,000 goal and have established a stretch goal of $50,000.”

Carroll said that volunteers built 1,500 binary coding kits with last year’s funds. The kits include all parts and materials required to teach computer language to third-grade children, which were primarily girls though all children are invited to participate. Carroll and Goodyer Jennifer connected with Women’s Council Local Leaders in Atlanta, Dallas, Southern California and Mid-Atlantic areas to schedule “packing parties,” where adult volunteers create the coding kits for distribution to local schools. This year’s networking initiatives will extend that blueprint to new cities while driving re-engagement with last year’s participants. “We want to maintain these efforts with young students year after year and on through high school and even college,” said Carroll.

Brittany Greer added that the two organizations are looking to Computer Science Education Week in early December as one potentially exciting growth opportunity. The impact of delivering binary code kits during Computer Science Education Week is potentially far reaching, not only introducing students to the world of coding but also fostering stronger relationships with the schools served. “With upcoming STEM days and curriculum integration, we are excited to continue collaborating with our partner schools, opening up new opportunities for students to engage with STEM and creating a pipeline for future innovators,” she said.

A Path to Pro AV

While supporting Rosie Riveters through corporate sponsorships and individual contributions is the top priority for AV Gives, Carroll and Goodyer treasure the opportunity to educate young girls about all the AV industry offers.

“The STEM program, and our involvement through these binary coding kits, lays the groundwork for a career path to the AV industry,” said Goodyer, also sales manager at manufacturer’s representative RTSales. “We include a brochure in these kits that showcases women and the careers they have in the AV industry. We want to communicate that women have a place in the AV industry, and continue to close the gender gap as the next generation of professionals enter AV.”

Goodyer added that third grade is an important starting point, as girls often lose confidence at the age of seven. “We want to intervene and show them that success comes from struggle, and that we all learn through failure,” she said. “This is one reason why we love Rosie Riveters. Every STEM kit is built on a productive struggle, and they help young girls build confidence one STEM kit a time.”

That productive struggle includes working from finished examples versus specific instructions, which helps young participants develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills as they reassess failures along the journey to successful completion.

“Women make up only 28 percent of the STEM workforce, and Rosie Riveters works to increase that statistic through an emphasis on productive struggle and confidence building,” said Greer. “We are excited to work with Erica, Jennifer and the incredible ProAV community through AV Gives. By opening young girls' eyes to the possibilities in ProAV, we can help share a more diverse and innovative future for the industry.”

AV Gives, which now operates autonomously though continues to work with The AVIXA Women’s Council, outlines several ways for organizations and contributors to get involved on its website at https://www.avgives.com/participate. Women in AV-IT (WAVIT), whose founding board members include Jennifer, will also support AV Gives and its 2023 initiatives.

PSNI Global Alliance has reinforced its mission for the highest worldwide standards with the introduction of its Strategic Account Specialist (SAS) Certification.

The SAS certification is the third accreditation developed by The Alliance and involves a comprehensive process to ensure its Certified Solution Providers (CSPs) meet PSNI’s criteria for pre-installation practices, including customer relationships and engagement, deployment practices and future growth strategy.

The AVIXA Foundation, the charitable arm of the Audiovisual and Integrated Experience Association, announced the recipients of its 2022 scholarships. The program’s mission is to encourage and enable students from diverse backgrounds who show great potential to pursue careers in the audiovisual field. Each winner is awarded $2,500.

“At the AVIXA Foundation, we are committed to building pathways for talent development of future AV industry leaders, and within its mission, the scholarship program is very important,” said Cristiano Mazza, CTS, AVIXA Foundation board president and product director at Grupo Discabos. “Scholarships provide rising professionals with means to support their dreams. This was a year with many impressive applications, and we are thrilled to welcome the winners into our community. We anticipate bright futures for them.”

[AVIXA Report: Strength of Pro AV Sales Surprises]

The AVIXA Foundation’s elAVate Scholarship supports the growth of women and gender equality in the AV industry. The 2022 recipient is Madison Pierce, a sophomore at Belmont University who is currently enrolled in the audio engineering technology program with business administration and physics minors. She is also part of the Women in Audio group on the university’s campus. Pierce believes that music can make the world a happier place and bring people together, which is why she focuses on equipment design. She says that an important part of achieving these goals is diversity.

The Michael Vergauwen Scholarship honors the legacy of the late Michael Vergauwen, former COO of AVI Systems and long-time AVIXA board member. This year’s recipient is Faith Pierce, who is enrolled in the Berklee College of Music graduate program. She focuses on music business, production, songwriting, and film scoring. Her hope is to be either an audio engineer in a recording studio or a re-recording mixer for TV and film. Pierce is committed to always listening, learning, and advocating for historically marginalized communities by encouraging inclusion and representation in the industry.

The Mosaic Scholarship was conceived by AVIXA's Diversity Council in support of further inclusivity within the global AV industry. It seeks to shine a light on young adults whose experience, background, and thinking will positively influence the future of the AV community. Thanks to donations by Legrand and Exertis Almo, the AVIXA Foundation was able to award four scholarships this year.

[AVIXA Releases New Image System Contrast Ratio Standard]

Recipient Nathan Erthal is working toward his master’s degree in music engineering technology at the University of Miami. He won the silver award for the AES Saul Walker student design competition. Erthal is interested in developing better and new ways for society to experience audio. He aspires to give back by dedicating his work to the audio industry while fostering more industry diversity.

A Mosaic Scholarship was also awarded to Akash Mungra, who is studying software engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He is a leader of the university’s oSTEM club, which provides opportunities and exposure to LGBTQ+ participants interested in STEM. This past summer, he interned with the Travelers insurance broadcast and AV engineering team. He plans on paving the way to success in the AV industry for others with similar backgrounds to him by showing them the versatility of AV technologies. He hopes to keep the AV industry bustling with divergent thinking by welcoming a wide range of backgrounds.

Mosaic Scholarship recipient AJ Panepinto is a freshman at Full Sail University majoring in film. He has a passion for telling stories behind the scenes and spent six years taking video production classes in middle school and high school. Panepinto would like to contribute to the industry by becoming a videographer and postproduction editor. He loves learning about new technology and being a part of an industry where there’s a place for everyone. Panepinto wants to encourage others, mentor future filmmakers and shine a light on the stories of those who feel their voice is being silenced.

Recipient Katharina Sawatzky is a freshman at American University. She plans on devoting her time to physics and audiovisual technology classes to gain knowledge of the science that goes into media development. Sawatzky has a few years of experience running the audio in community theater and mentoring other young women. Sawatzky has worked hard to become a good leader and technician, not despite who she is as a person, but because of it. She believes that flexibility and experience are more important than ever in an industry with quick technical and ideological advancements.

This scholarship program is part of the AVIXA Foundation’s initiative to support workforce development in the pro AV industry. The Foundation supports workforce development by creating awareness of careers in the global AV industry; enabling potential and emerging professionals through skills training, scholarships, and scholastic support; and developing a bridge between the industry and those who want to become AV professionals.

In response to continued growth, Draper has announced a major expansion that will add 20% to its manufacturing headquarters located in central Indiana.

The 100,000-square-foot addition will bring the total size of the facility to over 500,000 square feet.

“We see a lot of good growth opportunities, and this building is going to allow us to continue to take care and meet the needs of our customers,” said Draper company president Chris Broome. “Also, from a supply standpoint, we’ll be able to keep a better inventory of fabrics and other components, which will allow us to be more responsive to our customers’ needs.”

Draper currently employs more than 700 people, working in nine buildings across the headquarter campus. Broome expects the construction of a tenth building will add 25-30 new jobs immediately upon completion, which is expected late next year.

SMPTE will honor industry luminaries and next-generation leaders at the SMPTE Awards Gala, which takes place during the SMPTE Media Technology Summit (The Summit), the Society's first in-person conference since 2019. The Summit will wrap up with a gala and afterparty on Thursday, Oct. 27, back at its former venue—the Loews Hollywood Hotel in Hollywood, California. SMPTE Fellow elevations will be conferred at the SMPTE 2022 Fellows Luncheon on Tuesday, Oct. 25.

"I was drawn to SMPTE because of the importance of serving engineers, scientists, and artists—the people who make things happen without getting much recognition," said David Grindle, SMPTE's executive director. "Bringing their achievements to the forefront through our awards program gives them the recognition they so deeply deserve. I look forward to meeting many of them in person at this year's Gala."

This year's Gala will be hosted by 2021 Louis F. Wolf Jr. Memorial Scholarship Award recipient, musician, producer, and educational television host Monica Brighton. Brighton has a strong passion for technology, children's media, and education. She is currently the host and producer of "That TVOkids Show" on TVOKids, as well as host of "Backyard Beats," an award-winning educational music series.

[SMPTE Introduces 2022 Board Officers, Regional Governors, Governors-at-Large]

This year, 17 honors will be bestowed upon 38 individuals and organizations. Among these is the supreme accolade of the Society, Honorary Membership, which recognizes individuals who have performed eminent service in the advancement of engineering in motion pictures, television, or in the allied arts and sciences. This honor has been conferred on such industry luminaries as Thomas Edison, George Eastman, Samuel L. Warner, David Sarnoff, Walt Disney, Ray Dolby, George Lucas, Richard Edlund, James Cameron, and Peter Jackson. This year, Honorary Membership will be conferred on two individuals: Ang Lee and Charles H. Jablonski.

Ang Lee will be recognized for his extensive pioneering innovation in deployment of new technologies to enhance theatrical storytelling. In particular, Lee's use of advanced technologies such as 3D and higher frame rates in the films "Life of Pi," "Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk," and "Gemini Man," exemplify his creative use of new technologies to effectively draw viewers further into the story and the characters' emotional states.

Charles H. Jablonski will be recognized for his decades of pushing innovation in entertainment production and distribution, as well as his service to the education and mentorship of young entertainment engineers. He has played key roles in establishing the use of new technologies at the Olympics, in transitioning television operations and transmission from analog to digital processes, and in working with start-ups to advance and enhance the quality of content for the consumer experience.

The Progress Medal is the Society's most prestigious medal award. It was established in 1935 and recognizes outstanding technical contributions to the progress of engineering phases of the motion imaging industries. This year, the Society will recognize Touradj Ebrahimi for his leadership of the JPEG committee, as well as his recent work on exploring standardization opportunities in the areas of learning-based image coding (JPEG AI), NFTs, secure annotation of media modifications (Fake Media), and the use of DNA molecules for image storage.

The Samuel L. Warner Memorial Medal, established in 1946 and sponsored by Warner Bros., recognizes outstanding contributions in the design and development of new and improved methods and/or apparatus for motion picture sound. John Meyer, co-founder of Meyer Sound, will be presented with this award in recognition of his contributions to the design, measurement, and analysis of cinema speaker electronics for cinema mixing, review, and exhibition facilities.

Established in 1950 and sponsored by SRI International, the David Sarnoff Medal recognizes outstanding contributions to the development of new techniques or equipment that have improved the engineering phases of television technology. This year, Madeleine Noland will be honored for her significant contributions to the ongoing development and implementation of the ATSC 3.0 standard within the United States and internationally.

Sponsored this year by Technicolor Creative Studios, the Natalie M. and Herbert T. Kalmus Medal, which was established in 1955 and renamed in 2020, recognizes outstanding contributions that reflect a commitment to the highest standards of quality and innovation in motion picture post-production and distribution services. Patrick Renner will be honored this year for his vision, actualization, and continued refinement of on-set color management and color grading tools, as embodied in the Pomfort Livegrade software platform.

The James A. Lindner Archival Technology Medal, established in 2012 and sponsored by James A. Lindner, recognizes significant technical advancements or contributions related to the archive or preservation of media content essence. This year, the Society will honor Barbara Flueckiger for her outstanding research focused on the digitization and restoration of archival color films.

The Workflow Systems Medal, established in 2012 and sponsored by Leon D. Silverman, recognizes outstanding contributions related to the development and integration of workflows that enhance creativity, collaboration, efficiency or novel approaches to the production, post-production, or distribution process. This year, SMPTE will recognize the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Science and Technology Council for the significant creative and technical impact of the Academy Color Encoding System (ACES), which enables consistent, high-quality color management across complex, collaborative, end-to-end workflows.

The Camera Origination and Imaging Medal, established in 2012, recognizes significant technical achievements related to invention or advances in imaging technology. Michael Cieslinski will be honored this year for his pioneering work in image and camera design, which has led to the development of a family of high dynamic range electronic cinematography cameras that have the ability to create images with the look of 35mm film.

The Digital Processing Medal, established in 2012, recognizes significant technical achievements related to the development of digital processing of content for motion picture, television, games, or other related media. The Society will recognize Didier LeGall—visionary, pioneer, and expert—in honor of his contributions to image and video compression.

Established in 2016 and sponsored by William C. Miller and Ellen Sontag-Miller, the Excellence in Education Medal recognizes outstanding contributions to new or unique educational programs that teach the technologies of the motion sciences, and those who advance the educational process through innovative and inspirational methods. This year, SMPTE honors Carrie Wootten for her outstanding efforts to promote and foster careers within the broadcast technology industry through her work with universities and accrediting bodies, and the establishment of the Rise Up Academy.

In addition to the medal awards, the Society will confer several other honors during the Awards Gala.

The Journal Award for the best paper originally published in the SMPTE Motion Imaging Journal during 2021 will be awarded to Thomas G. Edwards and Michael D. Smith for their paper, "High Throughput JPEG 2000 for Broadcast and IP-Based Applications." In addition, Journal Certificates of Merit will be awarded to Richard Welsh for the paper "Cloud Production Pipeline Using IMF, C4ID, and Open TimeLine IO" and to Michael D. Smith and Michael Zink for the paper "On the Calculation and Usage of HDR Static Content Metadata." Smith is the first author to receive both the Journal Award and the Journal Certificate of Merit in the same year.

Four individuals will be honored with the Presidential Proclamation, which recognizes individuals of established and outstanding status and reputation in the motion picture and television industries worldwide: Mitchell Baker, chief executive officer, Mozilla Corporation, and chairwoman, Mozilla Foundation; Toshiyuki Ogura, distinguished engineer, Sony Corporation; Dan Sasaki, optical engineer, Panavision; and Dave Schnuelle, vice president, technology, Dolby Laboratories.

The Excellence in Standards Award, recognizing those who have been actively involved in advancing Society standards activities and processes, will be presented to Alan Lambshead, SMPTE Standards vice president, 2014-2018.

Five individuals will receive the Citation for Outstanding Service to the Society, recognizing dedicated service to SMPTE: Peter Armstrong, Toronto Section; Paul Broderick, Australia, New Zealand, and Southern Pacific Islands Section; Jeff Cohen, New York Section; Daniel Despa, Montreal/Quebec Section; and Robert (Bob) E. Lamm, New England Section.

The Louis F. Wolf Jr. Memorial Scholarship is designed to assist students in furthering their undergraduate or graduate studies in motion pictures and television, with an emphasis on technology. The 2022 scholarship will be awarded to SMPTE Student Member Summer E. Lange of Cedarville University.

Twelve new SMPTE Fellows will also be recognized during the Annual Awards Gala. This honor is conferred on individuals who have, through their proficiency and contributions to the motion-picture, television, or related industries, attained an outstanding rank among engineers or executives in media and entertainment.

Myers joins Planar’s mid-Atlantic sales team with more than 30 years of experience in AV and IT. Myers comes to Planar from CHESA, where he worked as a senior account executive in the federal sector. His background also includes previous roles at Chyron and Sony, working in strategic communications and as an account manager for federal sales for more than 16 years. He is based out of the Washington DC area and joins Greg Haas and Mike Beadenkopf in managing the company’s sales efforts across Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia.  

The Higher Education Technology Managers Alliance (HETMA) has announced the recipients of the Prism Scholarship. With the support of AVIXA, HETMA created the Prism Scholarship to support the growth of underrepresented communities within the U.S. higher education technology workforce.

The intent of the Prism Scholarship is to encourage women, LGBTQIA+, black, Latino, Asian, indigenous, disabled persons, and others to become active leaders and role models as technology managers in the higher education space.

Outgoing from the Board of Governors in 2023 as regional vice presidents are Gabriel Herman (Eastern Region, U.S./Canada), Alex Kosiorek (Western Region, U.S./Canada), and Elena Prokofieva (Northern Region, Europe). Governors with terms ending this year are Brad McCoy, Paul Womack, Jun Yamazaki and governor and past-president (twice removed) Nadja Wallaszkovits who completes her five-year commitment to the BoG. Board of Governors-elected director Brecht De Man’s two-year term will also end; his replacement on the Board will be named by the Board of Governors in 2022 Q4.

NSCA announced the election of new NSCA executive committee leadership, including new president Ray Bailey and the addition of a new officer to the NSCA Board of Directors, for 2022-2023.

Bailey, president at Lone Star Communications and current NSCA vice president, assumed the role of NSCA Board of Directors president on July 1, 2022.

“NSCA became important to my business from the very first day I started Lone Star,” said Bailey. “The Essentials Library [which is now online] was absolutely essential for us. Since then, through NSCA, I’ve had people I could share with and talk to about the industry and running a business. I could ask them, ‘What is your advice on how to do this?’ Everyone was open and willing to share, and that’s the way I have become over the years as well.”

Bailey replaces Michael Boettcher, who is the former CEO and executive director of New Era Technology. His two-year term as president ended on June 30, 2022. Boettcher will serve as NSCA’s immediate past president, replacing Josh Shanahan of Sport View Technologies.

Hall Technologies announced a broadened strategic focus to provide specific support to the consultants, architects, and design engineering firms who specify Hall products. Wayne Childs, CTS, is named to the newly created role of consultant liaison. With over 10 years experience at Hall, and over 20 in the AV industry, Childs brings expertise in total system design, project management, and exceptional relationship building to the new role. Already a highly tenured territory manager at Hall, he has in-depth knowledge of the Hall product line and solutions.

Hailed internally as the ‘Philips Godfather,’ Peter Vinke’s career and association with the Philips brand spans more than 30 years. He successfully positioned Philips professional displays into the global hospitality sector, including all major international hotel groups, since 2005. The company confirmed the long-serving PPDS sales director is to retire in September.

da Fonseca, previously sales director for the Nordics at PPDS, has been promoted to international key account director hospitality as Vinke prepares for retirement in September.

da Fonseca, who will begin his new role on July 1, has been with PPDS for more than 10 years and has been instrumental in guiding the company’s dramatic rise in the Nordics region, achieving and extending market share for Philips hospitality TVs to a commanding 55% in 2021. Based in Stockholm, da Fonseca joins Simone Gagliardi, Frank Trossen, and Valeriia Polovkova on the IKAM team.

PPDS’ unique IKAM approach was created to provide global consistency combined with local expertise for large-scale, multinational project installations, working with its network of trusted system integration partners serving more than 200-plus countries.
