AVT Question: Please share your insights into emerging trends and how AV/IT technologies are reshaping the higher education classroom and beyond.

Today’s modern higher education classroom is evolving, driven by the need for more flexible, interactive, and accessible learning environments. As hybrid learning becomes more prevalent, education systems are continuing to adopt technologies that streamline instruction, enhance engagement, and improve overall classroom management.

AVT Question: Please share your insight into trends that will play a role in hybrid workplace culture, space planning, and technologies in 2024.

Though it is clear that hybrid work will continue to play a role in the enterprise space, the hybrid work model is still evolving. Organizations must design spaces to be as flexible as possible to support the needs of their workforce as policies, collaboration technologies, and working schedules normalize. Our recently released products are all designed with unique features that enable the creation of flexible, powerful solutions that empower workers to collaborate effectively.

The multi-codec, dual-streaming capabilities of N2600 allow a single encoder to stream extremely high-quality video locally while simultaneously streaming H.264 video to remote participants over the internet.

Creating environments where technology helps users collaborate, create, and enjoy their workplace rather than one where the technology is a hurdle to overcome is the key benefit of an AV system that leverages innovations from AMX.

In a briefing held before ISE, Karam Kaul, vice president of audio at HARMAN International unveiled several products and principally, the BSS Audio’s Soundweb OMNI Open Architecture Digital Signal Processors. “You've seen in the last years we've made significant investments modernizing our portfolio. You’ve seen this with JBL, you've seen this with Martin. And that commitment to that innovation is going to continue with BSS and it starts with Soundweb OMNI and then the AVX software suite.” 

The Soundweb OMNI family combines enterprise-grade processors, flexible I/O expanders, Dante/AES67 networked audio, an onboard scripting engine developed by AMX, and a vast library of processing objects, including media playback, AEC, VoIP, and more.

The platform is seamlessly managed through AVX Architect and AVX Control, an all-new software suite, built from the ground up to support the latest installed products from HARMAN Professional starting with BSS Soundweb OMNI, ushering in a new era of installed AV software at HARMAN.

“We've seen the proliferation of third-party devices and securities become a concern,” said Kaul. “So, we know that technology is advancing at a rapid rate as is adoption and our ability to adapt and offer value with our systems and our ability to work well with third-party customers becomes incredibly important. With that in mind, we've spent the last few years modernizing our architecture to address these market shifts and bring our audio and our video brands closer together.” 

HARMAN is taking its next-generation audio solutions and tightly integrating them with its next-generation video and control portfolio. Kaul explained, “We’re unifying them under a new software suite known as AVX. That integration involved considerable effort and that included standardizing our operating systems, modernizing our DSP libraries, updating our communication, and networking protocols, adopting Dante as our audio backbone, and the list goes on.”

Next-gen MUSE

Alongside of all the audio development, HARMAN developed its next generation AMX MUSE Automation platform. “It’s capable of processing multiple scripting languages, supports different coding platforms, and really simplifies those routine tasks for users across multiple skill sets,” Kaul added. “This concept becomes incredibly important as we fold new users into our ecosystem. And this technology will also natively support AVX-enabled hardware devices, legacy HARMAN audio devices and AMX video devices. “The reason we did this was to protect the investments our customers have made with us over the years as we develop new products and expand this entire system.” The MUSE Automation platform technology is not only found in MUSE devices, it is also natively embedded into Soundweb OMNI processor. “This is like an instance of how we're bridging our audio and video portfolio and bringing them together.

“Just Audio Architect took an integrated systems approach within our audio portfolio. The AVX Suite simplifies that configuration control monitoring of Soundweb OMNI and future HARMAN products including AMX and incorporates third-party device integration through two very, very friendly user applications. The first one is an evolution of audio architect known as AVX Architect,” Kaul said.

The AVX software suite streamlines the configuration, control, and monitoring of Soundweb OMNI systems through two user-friendly applications. AVX Architect is a desktop software app for system diagramming, device configuration, network management, and custom UI design. AVX Architect allows users to add an unlimited number of processors and expanders to a single project file, while still enjoying the simplicity of a true, single canvas for device configuration. AVX Control is a lightweight software app, which provides easy access to custom UIs for controlling and monitoring devices across a multitude of platforms, including Windows, iOS, Android, and AMX Varia touch panels. These custom UIs work not only with Soundweb OMNI devices, but also Crown DCi amplifiers and previous generation Soundweb London devices, thanks to protocol-bridging technology developed by AMX.

On Security

The other key announcement is that HARMAN has moved to a single standard-based security paradigm across its entire AV portfolio. “Because a lot of development from the prior platform happened over time, there were design and implementation differences based on the portfolio,” Kaul said. “Making sure that our portfolio is following one design principle so that way is when there is a change in the landscape, because we're using a standards-based secure platform, we can easily react to it and then drive that change across a number of devices instead of having to do them on individual devices.”

The Samsung Display Experience Centre in Frankfurt is transforming its meeting room experience with the help of KSCAPE, part of the K-array professional audio ecosystem. With a solution based around KSCAPE RAIL, Samsung has eliminated the chaos of cables via integrated lighting and audio capabilities within a single dedicated product.

"Kris [Hogg, head of partnerships at Samsung] and I shared a frustration with modern meeting room disorganization and complexity," explained Tom Ríby, global sales and marketing manager at KSCAPE. "It was clear to us was that the productivity buzzkill caused by cable clutter and technological issues during video calls was a massive time and money drain to businesses. We started discussing how RAIL and Samsung could be used together to create an intelligent, elegant yet simplified meeting space—free from cables and with effortless plug-and-play connectivity.”

A key focus of this project was to challenge the existing norms of the meeting room experience. With the meeting space at Samsung's Experience Centre due for a refresh, the opportunity presented itself to showcase a new take on an advanced meeting room experience.

[Pro AV 2024: Now Trending] 

Within the meeting space, two RAIL units with symmetric, tunable lighting are installed above the table. A Truffle-KTR25 subwoofer from K-array, positioned under the table, adds depth to the audio experience. A K-array Kommander-KA04 amplifier powers both RAIL and Truffle.

“RAIL takes the necessary components of a modern meeting space, clear audio and adjustable lighting, and puts them together into a form that eliminates excessive cabling and multiple control,” explained Ríby. “Thanks to the integration of control plug-ins the tunable lighting and audio can be controlled through the AMX Muse controller, giving room occupants the ability to adjust the room ambience throughout the day.”

Samsung’s ‘The Wall’ screen, composed of modular LED panels, is used at the front of the room, ideal for formal executive meetings. A Samsung Flip 85-inch screen at the back of the room is used for more informal, collaborative meeting needs. Video conferencing is through a Logitech Rally Plus system. AMX CTC Pro acts as the unifying control system for all room technology and provides users with a plug-and-play experience. The room controls can switch seamlessly between meeting mode and video conference mode, eliminating the need to adjust speakers or plug in additional devices or laptops.

[Top Integrators 2023: Challenges for 2024]

“We’re pleased to partner with other technology manufacturers who share the same vision of simplified yet sophisticated meeting room technology,” said Hogg. “It was important to show the evolution and future of meeting rooms in this space. As part of this, removing the clutter and complexity at the table was a key factor in the design, making the room simple to use and understand. The addition of KSCAPE’s RAIL allowed us to include high-quality discrete audio and high-end lighting fixtures in one unit.

“It’s important to understand that it is more than just products; any meeting room system needs to bring together all the components into a single easy-to-use entity. The relationships between all the partners we work with are critical to ensuring the best possible user experience. KSCAPE, with its innovative design and integrated audio and lighting technology, plays a significant role in the success of this project.”

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: In an interview with AV Technology's content director, Cindy Davis, Brian Divine, president of the HARMAN Professional Solutions division, discusses the growth and future plans of the company. He mentions that the business has returned to pre-COVID levels and has seen growth across all sectors, including retail, touring, lighting, and installation. Looking ahead, Divine highlights a focus on the install market, with investments in hardware and software user interfaces. He also discusses the integration of the MUSE programming language into other products and brands within the HARMAN family. Divine discusses the acquisition of FLUX:: and its potential for immersive applications. He also addresses HARMAN's commitment to sustainability, aiming to be carbon neutral by 2040. Divine concludes by discussing the improvements in the supply chain, noting that the company is in a more stable position compared to the height of the pandemic. He also hints at upcoming product releases and the transformation of HARMAN's systems, including advancements in software and user interfaces.

On Growth

Cindy Davis: Please share a high-level view of the HARMAN business in 2023.

Brian Divine: Our business and the industry as a whole are finally from a supply chain perspective, which has been the dominant factor or at least a dominant topic of conversation over the past 18 months and is returning to something closer to normal. We've seen our business normalize back to pre-COVID levels this year, which has been a big help. 

We've seen growth across the board. Our retail business is strong, and our touring business is doing really well. Martin, our lighting business, has had pretty incredible growth over the past couple of years, as has our installation business. So, across the board, we feel very positive about where we are. 

Davis: Where are you expecting the growth to come from next year?

Divine: We are investing in doing R&D work across all the categories. Irrespective of brands, when we look at our markets, we break them down into retail, the installation market, which is by far the broadest category, and then our rental tour business. We'll have NPIs [new product introductions] across all of those. Starting at ISE, you're going to see a pretty concerted effort on our install portfolio, both in terms of hardware, and we'll have some things from the BSS brand as well as the software user interface. 

Davis: What are you expecting for growth next year, specific to the installation market? 

Divine: It's core to what we do, so there'll be a lot of investment, and you'll start seeing more of that starting in January at ISE. Across the board, when you look at the higher-end professional products, investment cycles and R&D cycles tend to be pretty long, especially when you do a fundamental paradigm shift like we did with MUSE. The notion of how we take AMX as a brand and make it more flexible and easier to use, and also more modern in terms of programming languages and provide our customers with a higher degree of flexibility than what we've had in the past. And then there's another layer of what we're working on in terms of system integration. 

On MUSE

Davis: In September 2023 HARMAN announced the new AMX MUSE Automation Platform, four new MUSE Automation Controllers, and several supporting developer resources. What impact has that had on the AMX brand already and going forward?  

Divine: This is a good philosophical talking point. In general, what you'll see from us as the new products come out is trying to meet the market where it is trying to address how we make things easier and more flexible, and how we make it so that it's faster and easier for people to get into an AMX programming environment and make systems do what they need to do—which is really what MUSE is all about. But even beyond that, when you look at HARMAN systems as a whole, how do we integrate better with third parties taking a step back from everything being proprietary to something that's a more open environment where we have third-party APIs, they can write their own plugins to come into our environment as we're having this discussion. At ISE, you'll see a much deeper look at how we're shifting our business, trying to meet the market where it is, and providing them with tools and flexibility. 

Some of the key things that AMX is known for when you look at networking and security and some of the highly sensitive applications it goes into, there's a lot that the broader professional group can learn from and use, especially as we get into environments where network security pretty much across the board is becoming a bigger and bigger topic. Having a brand like AMX with experts in that is a big advantage for us and will permeate more of the portfolio.

On FLUX::

Davis: In November 2023, HARMAN announced it entered into an agreement to acquire FLUX SOFTWARE ENGINEERING (FLUX::). Please share insight into that decision. 

Divine: We were asked to quote a couple of arenas with bigger installs in an immersive format. We didn't, as HARMAN natively, have an answer for that, so we went out and looked for a partner. The relationship [with FLUX::] formed out of that. As we got to work with them closer and get a sense of who they were and what they had developed, we were incredibly impressed with what the team had done. So, it came together very organically. It is a tool and a creative element we needed to have a solution. There are many potential future applications for things even outside of what they've done for immersive. You'll see more of it as we get a chance to integrate.

On Sustainability 

Davis: Sustainability is top-of-mind for everyone these days. What is HARMAN's approach?

Divine: HARMAN, as a company, is taking it very seriously and set a goal to be carbon neutral by 2040. Obviously, the sooner we can get there, the better. Some examples of things that are already happening today: We've done LCAs [life cycle assessments] on a couple of products to understand them cradle to grave, what's driving the carbon footprint to where we can minimize things, whether it be through packaging, manufacturing process, and even logistics plays a big role. 

Our new plant for Martin in Hungary is the first green plant within HARMAN. The heating and cooling are all geothermal, and energy is provided via solar. It is our first carbon-neutral plant, and we're also looking at how to expand to some of our other facilities. 

Our partner for warehousing and logistics in EMEA is also moving into a completely carbon-neutral facility. From a product side, turning the whole portfolio over or all the packaging is a longer-term play that we're working on. Anything new adheres to these standards now. It's across the board, from the manufacturing process to the packaging to the product. There's a serious concern or effort behind that.

On Supply Chain

Davis: Coming full circle, you mentioned supply chain at the beginning of our conversation. How is HARMAN doing with the supply chain today?

Divine: We're as close to pre-pandemic as ever since 2020. You look at 12 months ago at this point, we were still at record high back order, struggling to get components, finding any open market channel we could to get things we were in short supply of, and most of the time at enormous expense. Now, it is much more stable and predictable. Backorders are not down to what I consider historical norms, but they're not terribly far away, either. From a predictability of supply perspective, we're easily in the best spot that we've been.

First and foremost, especially looking at the integration channel, being predictable is key so that they can plan their installs and their jobs and not put our customers in a bind, waiting on something that we just missed a date for whatever reason, whether it was chip supplier or what have you. Most of that has cleaned up quite a bit. We're getting to a position where we're able to have stock in the warehouse on particular electronics. And I think that's true for the industry as a whole, from what I'm hearing. Most of our competitors are also in a much more stable position. Obviously, as a manufacturer, we would like to get as much as we can, but I think when you take a look at the industry as a whole, it's better for all of our customers as they're trying to do their jobs and plan installs and how they make their living.

One of the big benefits of being a part of the larger HARMAN Corporation and Samsung as a whole is that we didn't slow down R&D at all through the pandemic. Even when, in 2020, a lot of our markets just closed, and our revenue pretty sharply dropped off, as did everybody else's, we had the latitude to keep R&D and engineering going full speed. Modernizing and keeping the MPIs [manufacturing performance indexes] coming out and knowing that those are based on newer, more modern chipsets helped us. A good example is Martin. We've not had a backorder situation in Martin despite record sales for over a year because we've been able to get those components in those new designs. 

On New Announcements

Davis: Would you share what we can expect at ISE in Barcelona at the end of January? 

Divine: ISE will mark the first really public unveiling of what our next-gen systems will look like. You're getting glimpses with things like MUSE, but it's a piece; it's not the cohesive whole of where the HARMAN Pro and all the brands are moving. It's a much larger story, even than the few pieces of hardware that will come out. You'll see the software that will eventually sunset all the individual unique pieces of software that we historically have used. To pick an extreme example, if today you could, in theory, have 25 individual pieces of software to make a full system end-to-end, to program it and operate it, where that all collapses down to three. It is a major transformation in how our users will be able to interact with our products, including a security aspect, and there's also the ability to work and integrate third-party as well.

SCN: How long have you been with this company, and what are your responsibilities?

Jamie Trader: I’ve been in the AMX family for 16 years, having performed many functions across the business. Today, I’m responsible for HARMAN Professional’s Video & Control portfolio. This means aligning teams and resources around tomorrow’s growth strategy—and empowering really amazing people to go build the spectacular things this brand was meant to build.

SCN: AMX is wrapping up its 40th anniversary. How has the company celebrated this milestone?

JT: Aside from the obvious people celebrations globally, we’ve launched 40 new products this year across the entire portfolio—solutions that begin the foundation for our next 40 years.

[Executive Q&A: Change of Plans]

SCN: After touring your booth at InfoComm, it almost feels like AMX is reinventing itself. What is the company’s new philosophy?

JT: First, I’m thrilled you noticed that something seemed different. You weren’t the only one. Every visitor to the booth, at some point, stopped and said, “This is different. Really different. This is the direction I’ve been hoping this industry would finally go. What’s going on here?”

What they’re responding to is the culmination of years of R&D investment where we’ve been reimagining the role AMX will play in the industry and for our customers.

But to your question, I wouldn’t characterize it as a reinvention of AMX, or a new philosophy, so much as a return to the philosophies that began this business and an investment into the brand to do the right things.

The AMX mission, dating all the way back to Scott Miller’s garage over 40 years ago, has always been about simplifying the way people interact with technology. The way we see it, the business of simplifying human interaction with technology hasn't really changed—not because technology hasn’t, but because people haven’t. People want the same things today that they wanted 40 years ago. They want to get their job done. They want to be able to go into a room, interact with other human beings, share and express ideas, and solve problems.

They want to have meaningful experiences, and sometimes technology can get in the way. And sometimes the physical environment can get in the way. So, the business of automation has not changed. You're still trying to synthesize human behavior with digital information and the physical environment surrounding you for the sake of simplicity.

So, while the business—or the goals—of simplification haven’t changed, the focus on which friction to eliminate has. And you can’t eliminate the friction by doing things the way our industry does them today. You have to look at standards adoption differently. You have to look at our customers’ talent funnel and their workstream differently. You have to look at the supply chain differently.

This is what people are noticing as different with AMX today.

We’re telling our customers that today’s AMX product outlook is about “embracing your tools. Your skills. And enabling you to work the way you want to work.”

Today’s AMX takes standards adoption to an unprecedented level in our industry—and opens up capabilities to our partners and end users that they simply don’t get to experience anywhere else. We believe the products we’ve released in 2023 along with what’s coming in the near future is aligning AMX to solve these issues head on.

SCN: What are AMX's strongest vertical markets?

JT: While adopted across a very wide market spectrum, AMX continues to find its greatest adoption in government, education, corporate, and hospitality markets.

SCN: How is AMX moving beyond its control roots?

JT: AMX has decades-long expertise in advanced video solutions. Between our early AutoPatch solutions, which brought the market its first-ever digital video switching technology and first fiber video transport, to the current Enova digital video platform, to the industry’s first networked AV (AVoIP) platform, first 4K streaming solution, first AVoIP 4K video window processing, and so much more, AMX has continued to invest in making video more useful for people trying to communicate.

In fact, we’ve just launched SVSI’s next-generation secure, enterprise-grade AVoIP 4K60 4:4:4 products. This is a premium performance platform that we’ve built and positioned to be price competitive with our competitors’ bottom-tier solutions. The certified products include 4K60 DGX Modular Switching Systems, 4K60 DVX All-In-One Presentation Switchers, Control Processors, Touch Panels, Keypads, and I/O extenders.

Today's hybrid workspaces—whether corporate buildings or college campuses—come with their challenges. People come and go on different schedules, while others work remotely. As a result, writing down meeting times on a whiteboard has become a dinosaur-like approach.

Meeting equity and collaboration is important, but so are room analytics for IT professionals. The right hardware and software to manage all this is something systems integrators are prioritizing in one of the hybrid world's latest trends. 

Control panels, both the mini-digital signage dynamos themselves along with the right software, can help manage it all. We called on industry experts to find out what features are essential, as well as best practices behind room scheduling control panel installation.

More than the Minimum

So, where do you start in your quest to find the "right" control panel? Colin McDonough, product marketing manager, Crestron, said the bare minimum should feature adjustable time and date calendar functions, along with an occupancy/status indicator. "The most efficient solutions can work with a variety of scheduling platforms—communicating with the Microsoft Outlook calendar, for example," he explained.

“Native compatibility with popular calendar programs is vital to the user experience,” confirmed Robert Bird, product marketing manager, Altona. “Workers want the freedom to use the systems they are comfortable with and understand.”

Joe da Silva, vice president of marketing for Extron, feels there are a slew of “must-have” features to look for in a control panel. Some of the more important features include enterprise-grade security with encrypted communication across the ecosystem; analytics to track room usage, activity patterns, and occupancy trends; intuitive touchpanels with an LED status indicator to check space availability and meeting length; a check-in button to confirm meeting attendance; and the ability to monitor room occupancy to release the room to available status if left unattended.

While control panels used to take a more-is-less approach, with advances in software and technology to keep up with the ever-evolving hybrid world, more is more. So, what else can these panels do?

"To further simplify finding, booking, and locating a space, [Extron's] Interactive Wayfinding Interface connects directly to our Room Scheduling touchpanels," da Silva explained. "This combination provides real-time meeting space status and room location details on a centralized display. Having a Wayfinding Interface is especially useful in high-traffic areas such as lobbies, elevators, and major corridors."

“Given current technologies, the possibilities are limitless—in fact, we’d recommend a panel designed from the outset to be capable of many, many functions," McDonough said. "Scheduling and controlling lighting, shading, and HVAC, programming the right AV solutions for a hybrid meeting or a presentation, reporting on a room’s usage, even sending info to a control platform to track device lifecycles and licensing—all of those functions can now be handled from a single panel."

Keep It Simple(r)

As the technology world turns faster and faster, a key feature that most integrators and end users also look for is simplicity. This starts with an easy-to-install product as well as an easy-to-operate solution for the wide range of technological expertise end users possess.

"A properly designed touchscreen should be extremely easy to install—and versatile," said McDonough. "Crestron manufactures a variety of mounting kits for any surface or application you could conjure. And if wall installation simply isn’t possible, there’s a hefty tabletop version that’s available."

"Atlona AT-VTP-1000VL touchpanels are very easy to install," added Bird. "They ship with a dual-purpose glass and wall mount that is universally compatible with one-gang U.S., U.K., and E.U. openings. They also have a standard VESA 75 pattern for compatibility with third-party mounts."

As for whether these devices are agnostic, well, that depends on what the end user wants. According to McDonough, it is dependent on the manufacturer, although his solutions at Crestron are easily customizable and integrated with a variety of solutions.

"[Atlona's] Velocity gateways and touchpanels work together for room scheduling applications," Bird said. "In addition, they can be integrated with several popular calendar applications including Google Workspace, Office 365, Microsoft Exchange, and Astra Schedule."

Remember, installation doesn't end with mounting the control panel; you need to get the software up and running as well. "Setup is a breeze, with options to customize the touchpanel interface with the meeting options you need," said da Silva regarding Extron's room scheduling panels. "The free Room Agent scheduling software connects directly to popular calendar services such as Microsoft Exchange, 365, Google Calendar, and others."

In terms of scheduling the room itself, it should be a simple process. But can it be done right from the touchpanel, or is a separate software required? "In a best-case scenario, either/or," said McDonough. "While many users will schedule a room from the calendar apps on their devices, there are occasions when it’s handy to tap the screen itself and book a meeting time. A good solution can handle both."

Hybrid or Bust

It seems with every new device or solution that's introduced, the question has to be asked: Why is it important for a hybrid work environment? When it comes to room scheduling solutions specifically, why is something that schedules a physical meeting room important for people that may not even be in it?

“Room scheduling system synchronization with popular calendar applications is critical," Bird offered. "With this capability in place, the system can support meetings booked by participants across the country, across the corporate campus, in the building, or at the room.”

"More than ever our work lives are dictated by schedules," added da Silva. "With hybrid work, employees may have a variety of schedules. Room scheduling, in conjunction with a calendar system, facilitates fluid and accurate information across staff to find, book, and locate a space—keeping everyone in sync and avoiding wasted time to search for a space. Room scheduling touchpanels maximize resource management and room usage, enabling users to locate and book the proper size room."

It's important to remember that IT and executive leaders benefit as well as employees or students. "Understanding the true amount of 'connected real estate' that a business needs in the modern hybrid work environment can be incredibly useful to a C-suite that’s making budgeting decisions," McDonough said. "These tools can also tell IT which rooms may be underutilized—and help them understand why." 

Now that you know what to look for, which control panels should you consider? Here are nine for your consideration.

The selection of one type of transmission technology over another is based on the type of application. AV over IP (or AVoIP) is ideal for when video, audio, and other types of signals need to be shared across different buildings, campuses, and even geographical locations. AVoIP offers many advantages, such as limitless flexibility and scalability, easy IP setup, daisy chaining capabilities for multiple displays, and convenient integration and installation. With careful planning and coordination, there are no major obstacles to applying this technology nowadays.

AV over IP hardware is not very expensive when compared to traditional AV infrastructures of video matrixes and extenders. Companies buy the number of encoding and decoding devices required at that moment and expand in the future as needed, a network switch to handle the signal from the encoder to the local area network, and high-grade (CAT 6a or CAT 7) or fiber optic cables.

However, because AVoIP can use the existing IT network in the company, bandwidth is a key consideration system integrators and AV/IT managers need to plan for in advance—and this can be very expensive. What would the load of data be in three or five years? What type of data will the video signal have? What type of image quality and latency is acceptable for the application? How many locations will the data need to be sent in the future? These are just a few questions that should be asked/considered when implementing a future-proof infrastructure.

Adapting to the future never has been easy. The speed at which users adopt new technology depends on more than just “it’s a better solution.” Consider the move from the typewriter to the word processor. Early machines were expensive and required technical knowledge beyond most in the “typing pool.” The full potential was not unlocked until users realized that they no longer had to start again to make one simple change.

Frequently, early adopters are those who have a task that cannot be accomplished easily with existing technology. Unless the cost of the new technology is trivial, deployment is slow until production increases and prices fall. Likewise, the availability of those who can install and use new technology is limited. And sometimes, “bold new things” just don’t work out. How does a responsible manager spot long-term success among all the possibilities?

Cost is key, but it is important to identify all of the acquisition, installation, operation, and lifetime costs. With an existing infrastructure, what will be the repair and replacement costs next year, or five years from now? Aging infrastructure in installations is a place to start. Where are you in the life cycle of your wiring, and can it support existing and emerging technologies? In the past, designing network infrastructure for transporting media was challenging. Simply working out what might be required often led to “over-provisioning” during the design phase. Now the level of traffic required for systems to “just work” has risen so high that over-provisioning becomes impractical and expensive. 

In this context, technologies and systems that provide deterministic, guaranteed, performance provide an advantage that should be sought out.

So the answer is that it’s complicated, but looking at all of the real costs will help determine when a proposed change in technology will provide a significant advantage.

I’d really love to see the industry get past the idea that AVoIP is expensive. There’s a persistent belief that AVoIP solutions aren’t cost-effective unless you’re operating at a really large scale.

That’s just not true anymore. Once a system is big enough to require an 8x16 matrix, you can deploy an AVoIP solution for an equal or lesser cost, and that’s just the initial outlay. When it comes to maintenance and expansion, AVoIP has a big advantage over traditional AV. You can expand the system easily and keep it cost-effective by just adding more switches, and you don’t have to worry nearly as much about distance limitations; the content can go wherever the network does. There are also hidden savings in terms of labor. With remote monitoring and troubleshooting capabilities, you don’t have to roll trucks every time there’s a problem, and a single skilled technician can manage a sprawling system.

I’m a big believer in buying boxes for today and putting in infrastructure for tomorrow. Maybe you’re not ready for 10-Gig switches now, but you should pull cable like you are. Even legacy gear can benefit from a robust, structured cable plant, using devices that convert and extend the AV signal over CAT cable or fiber. Getting that infrastructure in place is the first step towards a fully networked system, and you benefit immediately.

Today, the biggest obstacle to the adoption of AV-over-IP technology is a lack of interoperable, open standards. With so many proprietary solutions out in the field, the obvious downside is not being able to send or receive video flows from the disparate systems that customers end up owning, either due to legacy or to the need to accommodate use cases that aren’t covered by one solution, such as live production and meeting room presentations. 

The lack of interoperability exasperates this situation, resulting in the duplication of networks and exploding complexity at the control layer. For example, a multi-site organization that upgrades their systems over the course of years is likely to have multiple islands of AV-over-IP ecosystems with no clear path to creating a unified, manageable system from a user experience or maintenance perspective. As a result, everything becomes a special case for the IT department and the support desk gets swamped. 

Thankfully, there is hope on the horizon. The group of companies supporting IPMX, (Internet Protocol Media Experience) through the non-profit AIMS (Alliance for IP Media Solutions) is rapidly expanding, with companies such as Panduit, Barco, Lumens, Sencore, and AV Pro Global recently announcing their support. As this set of standards moves towards ratification and adoption, we can begin to see a world where video on the network is “just video” and the transport technology quietly fades into the background as it supports an incomprehensible number of use cases, many of which have yet to be dreamed. 

Just as it should be.

The Secursat Security Operation Center (SOC) is more than a control room, but a technological hub used both for security monitoring and as a showroom in the heart of Milan. This is  an innovative facility was developed in partnership with Intermark Sistemi and used a slew of Pro AV solutions from RDI, VUWALL, and AMX by Harman.

Secursat was founded as an outsourcing of the banking sector to manage traditional security systems through the network, not only for the financial sector but also for retail, industrial, and real estate. However, talking about security means managing risks—monitoring thousands of sites and managing big data from installations around the world to ensure the protection of jobs, buildings and the general assets of Secursat customers.

The complexity of the subject required an uncompromising technological setup that balanced functionality, performance, reliability and ergonomics. The Secursat SOC is certified in accordance with the European Standard EN 50518, which regulates the structural, performance and organizational aspects of an Operations Center. The solutions selected for the SOC were RDI for the operator consoles, VUWALL for the management of the room’s video walls, AMX for the centralized control based on touch panels and ALFATRON (now JOSAWA) for the distribution of signals, based upon both copper and fiber cables.

AMX Control Touch Panels

To complete the equipment of the room, AMX touchpanels were a natural choice. The 10-inch, in-table version is always ready to change the layouts of the video wall or activate any functions throughout the entire room. The user interface allows for intuitive and streamlined operations, offering the necessary commands within the first page of the module while leaving fewer common functions to secondary pages. The NX-1200 controller, the smallest in the AMX series, has enough power to handle all room equipment and to automate key functions.

AMX Equipment Used:

• AMX NX-1200: A NetLinx NX Control Unit. It supports IPV6 and 802.1x standards, HTTP, HTTPS, Telnet, FTP protocols and provides real-time diagnostics with a processor speed: 1600 MIPS.
• AMX MT-1002: A Modero 10-inch G5 series horizontal touchpanel that provides G5 graphics with Quad Core processor. IPS technology enables crystal-clear images and ±89-degree side visibility. 

Yealink and HARMAN Professional Solutions have partnered in the integration of the Yealink Microsoft Teams Rooms system and AMX by HARMAN control systems that brings a convenient connection and simple control when users are meeting and presenting in the meeting rooms.

Moreover, the integration of Yealink and AMX allows users to control not only the camera on the Yealink MTouch II, but also the lighting and room temperature

The new, high-performance KVM-over-IP extender VisionXS utilizes standard Ethernet networks with up to 10-Gbit bandwidth and therefore requires much less compression at higher display resolutions. G&D's proprietary lossless video compression bluedec transmits pixel-perfect resolutions up to 4K60 and improves the user experience. As a special highlight, the integrated IP-MUX function lets a console device manage multiple target IP addresses from up to 20 computer sources without additional hardware. For simpler applications, the on-screen display can be used to switch between different sources.

To enable employees in control rooms to keep an eye on all content, various screens can be displayed on one large monitor. Particularly exciting for this purpose is the PersonalWorkplace-Controller, a multi-viewing tool that allows up to 26 video sources to be displayed and operated on a single screen depending on the application. AV professionals benefit from a flexible layout, with image quality up to 4K60. The PWC optimizes workflows, where multiple signals need to be monitored. Combining a KVM system with the PWC ensures secure, high-performance, and flexible access to all relevant computer systems. It is also possible to use the PersonalWorkplace-Controller to display the sources on a large video wall.

ATEN has been working hard to help our partners meet the new needs for AV and will showcase these solutions at InfoComm 2022. Our company is focused on providing connectivity and control solutions that foster emerging AV environments that enable the amount of interactivity and flexibility required to build a new, better normal. We work with our partners to meet the demands of these new requirements and challenges and to find the best solutions.

We have been working to enable hybrid and remote environments in a variety of industries. Education has new requirements to support remote and in person classrooms and lecture halls. Entertainment has been revolutionized, with new immersive and mixed reality experiences. Office spaces and meeting rooms have transformed to support the hybrid work environment and focus on creating new collaboration spaces.

We are also working with partners to develop immersive environments with our HDBaseT video extenders that meet their needs for long-range AV transmission and quick, responsive equipment. Our video presentation switches, control boxes, and content creation products are being used to transform offices and classrooms into collaborative experiences for both remote and local participants.

I am eagerly looking forward to supporting new AV experiences as the application of collaborative and immersive AV technology is applied in new and unpredictable ways to delight and excite everyone. I believe AV technology is just on the cusp of supporting a new collaborative and immersive world.

As we continue to move forward and transition our lives to blend the remote, physical, and virtual into hybrid environments at work and school, the efforts to find suitable collaboration solutions will be ongoing. 

Hybrid environments are an amalgam of fluidity. There is no fixed plan or one-size-fits-all strategy anymore. Just how does a solution provider or manufacturer operate in these new environments? Basically, we work together and offer products and services that meet the demands of these hybrid settings, both in the workspace and in the classroom. We need to deliver products that can be smart and connect employees, teachers, and students. We also need to support our AV partners by designing products that continue to evolve with the changing needs of their customers.

At InfoComm 2022, I believe that we’ll see products and services that accommodate the fluidity of the hybrid environment and fusion of flexible solutions—more interactive and larger screens, products to facilitate collaboration and communication, and products that support a hybrid life. ViewSonic, for example, will be introducing the next generation of ViewBoard interactive displays with the IFP62 and IFP52 series. They are ideal collaboration products that allow businesses and schools to create connected spaces and help teams collaborate. Other products will include portable monitors for added convenience.

Brompton Technology is a specialty manufacturer of LED processors based in London, UK. Since 2012, we’ve been delivering world-class products, with a heavy focus on customers in live events and concert touring. The road-worthiness proven in these areas have helped us make a name for ourselves as the most dependable option LED processing. We also bring a feature set and ease of use that is truly second to none. This is born out in the fact that the very first processors we delivered, 10 years ago, can still be found in working rental inventories today. Those early products are still capable of being updated, as well! 

At InfoComm 2022, we’ll be showing our full range of processors, from the HD-compatible S4 and T1, to our 4K S8 and flagship SX40 units. 

At Brompton, we never stop improving and innovating. One recent example is our Hydra camera measurement system, a product we created due to the lack of capabilities found in off-the-shelf calibration systems for LED. Hydra turns the legacy calibration process on its head, and by truly understanding what each LED on a panel is capable of, our processors are able to achieve a very high level of performance, especially when dealing with HDR sources. We call this process Dynamic Calibration. 

In addition to hardware developments, we’re constantly pushing new feature updates (always free of charge!) in our Tessera software. Over the past couple of years, we’ve found our products being used heavily in broadcast, XR, and virtual production for film. So, our most recently added features have been quality-of-life improvements for using LED in-camera. Some of these latest features are Frame Remapping, ShutterSync, 3D LUT, and camera tracking implementations. Please stop by our booth to say hello and check out the latest developments!

Elevating performance and efficiency for integrators will be front and center at the RTI and Blustream booths, which are right next to each other at InfoComm 2022. For RTI, the focus will be on control solutions for a variety of installations, from collaboration spaces to hospitality, with programming made faster by our newly released Integration Designer 11 and its rich, innovative tools that make it easier for integrators to deliver exceptional solutions for every need. It features the all-new "Coral" template, with pre-configured home pages, swappable backgrounds, customizable scroll bars across the touchscreens, and new fonts—all with auto-programming and a built-in driver store that adds efficiency to every project. We’ll illustrate the breadth of control opportunities RTI provides integrators, including new integrations ideal for office environments, 4K UHD Video over IP controlled natively within the RTI environment, plus RTI Music with our new Music Streamers and partnership with SoundMachine streaming music service that can create recurring revenue for integrators. 

Our partner Blustream will showcase award-winning AV distribution solutions, including its lineup of HDBaseT, video over IP, and HDMI distribution products that integrate effortlessly with all the major control platforms, including RTI. From matrixes to multi-format presentation switchers and more, the Blustream philosophy is to make advanced features standard, such as enabling 4K 18Gbps 4:4:4 resolutions across primary Blustream HDMI and HDBaseT products sold in the US. The Blustream Multicast UHD video over IP platform uses lossless compression technology to deliver virtually latency-free HDMI video up to 328 feet over a 1Gb network switch. Innovative new products include the multi-format HEX70HDUK-KIT extender set—an HDMI 2.0 4K 60Hz 4:4:4 (18Gbps) HDCP2.2 HDBaseT solution using CSC technology to deliver HDMI, USB-C, and DisplayPort over a single Cat cable. Audio solutions on display include the new Dante-enabled networked power amplifier—the NPA100DA. For collaboration, the Blustream AMF41W enables a BYOD solution that eliminates the complexity of setting up guest networks.

Thought Leader: Brian Cockrell, Product Owner and Co-Founder of the Intel Unite solution

The concept of the workplace is changing. It is no longer all about work (in the sense of routine tasks) or about place. Instead, organizations are beginning to embrace the concept of a more flexible approach, where employees’ homes are the place to get things done and the office is the place to figure things out. We are seeing this happen at Intel, where many employees have been given the opportunity to continue to base themselves at home—returning to the office for those activities that benefit from face-to-face interaction, such as collaboration. To keep talented employees, organizations will need to evolve, and the more quickly and seamlessly they can adapt, the more successful they will be. A big part of this evolution will involve the rethinking, and the adding, of collaboration spaces.

The philosophy behind the Intel Unite solution is based on the recognition that evolution is constant, and to meet customers’ needs for fast, frictionless adaptation, a product must not only be able to evolve, but it must be designed to evolve. That’s why our software-based, cloud-delivered collaboration solution uses an open and extensible architecture that allows the seamless integration of a growing library of collaboration-enhancing apps, some developed by Intel, some by our partners, and some—like the new Bose VB1 video bar app—developed jointly. It’s why we offer a publicly available SDK that gives IT and solution partners the freedom to develop custom solutions. 

At InfoComm, we’ll demonstrate not only app integrations like the newly released Google Meet app, but also the many other features that make the Intel Unite solution uniquely adaptable. We’ll also show why it is well positioned for a BYOM world where collaborators must switch seamlessly between in-room, remote, and hybrid scenarios, and where collaboration spaces can vary from touchdown spaces to boardrooms.

Thought Leader: Sam Recine, Chair, Pro AV Working Group, AIMS

At InfoComm, AIMS will host its first live interoperability demonstration of Internet Protocol Media Experience (IPMX)—a set of standards-based protocols designed to ensure interoperability for AV over IP. This first-of-a-kind demo will feature networking equipment and hardware and software nodes running both IPMX and SMPTE ST 2110, the standards suite on which IPMX is based. The demo will also highlight gateways between IPMX and other protocols, developer kits, and elements of IPMX-enabled AV-over-IP workflows. 

With this demo at InfoComm 2022, we're passing a critical milestone on the AIMS roadmap for open-standards-based media over IP. We're demonstrating the technical viability of IPMX in terms of multivendor interoperability, and that is pretty exciting! 

Also significant is the high level of industry support the demo signals. Leading manufacturers are building IPMX support into their products, and more companies are continually joining those ranks as we move toward a more flexible, dynamic, IP-based future for pro AV.

Demo partners include Arista Networks, Cisco Systems, intoPix SA, Macnica, Matrox, Ross Video Limited, STAGETEC GmbH, and many others.

IPMX implements a standards-based approach based on SMPTE ST 2110, with features and capabilities that target the specific needs of the pro AV industry. In addition to simplifying implementation of SMPTE ST 2110 and ensuring interoperability for AV-over-IP systems, IPMX incorporates other features tailored to pro AV installations. These features include AMWA NMOS IS-04 and IS-05 for discovery, registration, and connection management, as well as specifications for copy protection and security.

We’re celebrating our 30th anniversary in 2022, with most of those years spent delivering AV-over-IP distribution solutions. Our design philosophy is to respect the investment that customers make in their AV systems with products that last and systems that can be upgraded or modified as new features arrive. Scalability and flexibility are key, as Just Add Power systems can be expanded as needed and have the features and abilities to solve system design problems that arise from facility layout, zone requirements, and the desire to wow. Those themes continue to guide the formation of our products, services, and partnerships, which attendees will see and experience at InfoComm. 

First up is our new, award-winning MaxColor 4K60 Series. It natively supports 4K60 in and out to allow end users to play Ultra HD video from the growing number of 4K sources and devices on the market. We released this product last year and people couldn’t wait for it to ship!

Our Warp Engine transmitter took home the best of show award at InfoComm 2021 in Orlando, and we’re excited to have it displayed in Las Vegas for anyone who didn’t have the opportunity to experience it. The latest specialized product in our 3G Ultra line, the Warp Engine can rotate video in 0.1-degree increments, to single screens or video walls, to allow screens to be mounted at any angle. The eye-catching displays that can be created with this product are limited only by the installer’s imagination.

Finally, we have the ST1 sound transceiver, an audio-only device that can serve as an input or an output. Integrators can add a stereo audio source to any Just Add Power system or extract stereo audio from an existing transmitter. With this one device, integrators can manipulate the audio signal in a multitude of ways to suit customer’s desires.

As professional AV’s largest interoperable ecosystem, the HDBaseT Alliance has long been committed to fostering an environment of greater flexibility and inclusiveness among our industry’s community. This has never been clearer than in recent years, as global supply-chain challenges have effectively brought into focus, especially for integrators and installers, the importance of access to brand-agnostic solutions that work together seamlessly. With an ecosystem of over 200 members, and thousands of products in the market supporting the HDBaseT standard, I am proud to say that each day HDBaseT is helping them skirt some of these obstacles, and all without sacrificing a single pixel on quality or reliability.

At the heart of our efforts to spearhead the ongoing advancement of this truly interoperable ecosystem is our Spec 3.0 of the HDBaseT standard. This latest generation supports the extension of fully uncompressed 4K@60Hz 4:4:4, audio, USB 2.0, 1Gb Ethernet, controls, and up to 100 watts of power—all over a single, standard, Category 6a cable—up to 100m/328ft. In just over 6 months since the first wave of HDBaseT 3.0 products made their debut on our booth’s signature Power Wall at InfoComm 2021, the number that will be displayed there at this year’s show has grown by over 200 percent—a true testament to the technology’s game-changing potential. Clearly, we are only scratching the surface of the market’s demand for the high-bandwidth, uncompressed, multimedia signal distribution with zero latency that only HDBaseT 3.0 can provide.

Heading into the second half of 2022, we are excited to continue providing our members with more opportunities for innovation, expanding the number of interoperable products for integrators and installers to choose from, and widening the array of real-world applications for professional AV, with greater capabilities than ever before.

VuWall’s goal remains the same: To continue developing powerful, interoperable tools that facilitate the installation and operation of all IP devices and applications from one easy-to-use, centralized platform. 

VuWall’s latest TRx 3.2 release brings enhanced performance, usability and interoperability. This version also features a new plug-in to the Genetec Security Center for a seamlessly integrated solution that allows operators to visualize IP cameras on video walls with other content sources from a single easy-to-use platform. Looking forward, VuWall continues to focus on facilitating interoperability in the AV industry, already supporting SDVoE, IHSE, Matrox and NDI-compatible devices. Organizations expect to be able to grow their pool of IP equipment as their needs evolve while controlling their AV infrastructure from a single software platform. TRx is the only software platform that brings such flexibility to control a multi-brand environment with seamless compatibility.

The demand for multi-source, multi-video wall deployments is at an all-time high and continues to accelerate. The progress of the AV-over-IP transition; the convergence of AV and IT; the affordability of networks, displays; and the market demand for more flexibility and interoperability have created a unique need for a distributed video wall solution. VuWall addresses and solves these challenges and limitations with the introduction of the PAK video wall node, which is used to deploy and manage modular video walls in AV-over-IP environments. PAK eliminates complicated wiring, a single point of failure, and past challenges by creating the most efficient networked video wall solution. After two years of being away, Epson is eager to be back at InfoComm to demonstrate our latest projection technology in person. Epson will showcase the world’s smallest and lightest 20,000-lumen and 10,000-lumen projectors; along with its ultra-wide, extra-big display solutions; flexible signage technology; and its impressive projector management and installation tools. 

Shown for the first time in the U.S., Epson will highlight its new 13,000-, 16,000-, and 20,000-lumen projectors, including the EB-PU2220B and EB-PU2120W, which are 60 percent smaller and 50 percent lighter than predecessors. Epson will also show the new PixAlign ELPEC01 camera that attaches to select Epson projectors and lenses. PixAlign is a powerful tool that makes advanced projection installations, such as edge blending and stacking, easier than ever before. 

Addressing today’s education and corporate display needs, Epson will also demonstrate hybrid collaboration and learning solutions that enable all participants to see, be seen, and participate equally, whether they are in person or remote. Epson’s booth will also include digital signage solutions that enable creative minds to deliver immersive, experiential moments to be remembered.

FSR was established in 1981, the same year IBM launched the PC, and we’ve never wavered in our mission to provide quality and cost-effective products to an industry in constant motion. The company now manufactures hundreds of infrastructure, signal management, and control solutions, including floor, wall, table, and ceiling connectivity boxes, as well as a full line of interfaces, distribution amplifiers, matrix switchers, seamless switchers, and HDBaseT and CAT-X signal delivery products.

This year our engineering team has been exceptionally busy designing products that address current requirements, but—as always—will feature forward-thinking functionalities to keep our customers ahead of the technology curve. And while we didn’t predict the severe supply chain shortages, we were ready! All our products are made in the U.S., our shelves are stocked, and there is ample inventory available.

Our product roadmap includes a cost-effective and clear path to power, data, and AV transport across a room to where it is needed. We launched our award-winning and extremely popular Smart-Way Raceway a few years ago, and we are constantly adding to the platform. At InfoComm we are introducing Smart-Way Wall Raceway that allows the transition from a floor to ceiling system. We are also extending our Modular Link System (MLS) with the Smart-Way MLS Stick—a quick way to extend the MLS across the floor to another work surface.

On the infrastructure side, we are debuting the industry’s first dedicated flat panel TV project box engineered for 8-inch block walls full of features and options available in a variety of configurations.

And come see our hinged “tool-less” U-Access cover that will simplify and shorten installation timelines. 

Other innovations include a pre-wired ceiling box that minimizes job site visits, a high-end performance 3.1 Gen 2 Digital Ribbon USB cable, an internal charger bracket designed to contain AC power, plus a USB Type-A and Type-C charger, new DA, switcher, and extender. Really too much to mention here!

The new SR-20HD direct streaming AV mixer, a powerful and portable audio/video switcher, makes it easy for enterprises to master direct livestreaming with little training. Roland simplified livestreaming and reduced pain points by combining a video switcher, audio mixer, preview screen, recorder/player, and streaming encoder in one.

The V-600UHD 4K HDR multi-format video switcher with automatic ROI and VR-4HD AV mixer enhance single-operator productions. You don’t need multiple cameras for multiple shots with the V-600UHD. It covers wide, medium, and close-ups with built-in region of interest (ROI). The VR-4HD—a complete, portable HD studio—replaces many pieces of complex gear. 

Enhance hybrid event workflow with our V-160HD streaming video switcher and V-8HD video switcher. A new standard for hybrid events, the V-160HD offers full HD with comprehensive SDI and HDMI I/O while simultaneously streaming via USB-C. The V-8HD brings many creative options to live switching with all-in-one hardware, eliminating setup and software hassles, and a professional HDMI toolset that streamlines production. 

Roland makes content creation simple and affordable with the AeroCaster livestreaming system, allowing anyone to create wireless multi-camera streaming setups using mobile devices. The compact UVC-02 web presentation dock desktop control hub connects an HDMI camera, pro mic, and other audio sources to look and sound your best in video meetings. The V-02HD MK II streaming video mixer mixes audio and switches two HDMI cameras, sending it all directly to streaming platforms.

Roland provides many solutions to enhance sports/esports productions. The P-20HD video instant replayer offers pro replay capabilities simply and affordably. The VC-100UHD 4K video scaler integrates high-frame-rate gaming machines into HD 59.94/50 Hz workflows.

The VC-1-DMX video lighting converter generates control commands for DMX lighting setups based on input from video/audio/MIDI sources.

Renkus-Heinz was lucky enough to attend InfoComm 2021 in Orlando, and its energy was impressive after a pandemic hiatus! Being able to meet in person, create connections, discuss projects, and showcase technologies once again meant the world to the entire AV industry at last year’s show. Now in 2022, we have seen the resurgence of not only trade shows, but live events globally. Theater performances, sporting events, music festivals, and more are finally back on the calendar and we at Renkus-Heinz couldn’t be more excited to be a part of the excitement!

Delivering great sound to audiences is more important than ever, as many potential live event goers have created their ideal at-home setup while restrictions caused them to enjoy events from the living room.
