SCN: How long have you been with this company, and what are your responsibilities?

Luca Lastrucci: Powersoft was jointly founded in March 1995 by myself, my brother Claudio Lastrucci (R&D director), and our good friend, Antonio Peruch (production engineering director). Even after 27 years, we are all still deeply involved in the operational side of the business on a day-to-day basis.

We all have different functions and responsibilities, but we share the same objective: to innovate through products that are design-driven. This requires being present, guiding and stimulating our employees through our corporate mission statement, which is constantly present and which our president (my father, Carlo) regularly renews. This is one of the key points of Powersoft's success, which has kept in mind this mission of innovation combined with extreme quality. 

SCN: What makes a great amplifier?

LL: Power is important, but signal processing is equally important. Both our tour amp platforms and those installed are equipped with a powerful digital signal processor (DSP). No less important is the reliability of the product. During the design phase, the utmost attention is given to guarantee performance and continuity of operation. Before a product is approved, it undergoes all kinds of tests, stresses, and certifications. These amps are rigorously tested in our burn-in room where they are driven with custom programs for hours, even days at times, to ensure maximum durability and reliability.

During the mass production phase, as the last step before packing and shipping, each product is tested.

And of course, energy efficiency is key: Our amplifiers deliver the industry’s best power-to-size ratio. Fewer amplifiers (with smaller size) are required to run the same PA system, which directly impacts CO2 emissions. 

SCN: What was the inspiration behind your Mover product, and what are some of the more interesting applications in use today?

LL: It all started with M-Force, our patented transducer based on a moving magnet, linear motor structure. This product really redefined what was possible in the realm of infra-bass, reaching well below the conventional frequency range.

Back in 2018, we were approached by the Lava Center in Iceland, which was about to open an interactive, high-tech educational exhibition about volcanic activity and earthquakes. They wanted to simulate the sonic realism of an earthquake for visitors, so they turned to us to create a 1.5-meter platform that was able to realistically replicate earthquakes up to magnitude 6.0 on the Richter scale with the M-Force. It was the first time our M-Force technology had been used for mechanical movement. The development of this system led the way to the creation of the Mover product line.

Mover uses a moving magnet linear motor to create low-frequency vibration, but it is extremely compact and therefore more versatile when it comes to its applications. This effectively adds another dimension to sound, one that can be felt through haptic perception—the human ability to experience and interpret our surrounding environment based on touch and feel.

Mover can be used underneath nightclub flooring to enhance the bassline of music being played, onto the back of cinema chairs for a 4D cinematic experience, or within immersive exhibitions such as the Illuminarium in Las Vegas and Atlanta. All these venues benefit from Mover’s low-end frequencies paired with the surrounding content, so the visitors can literally feel the action. 

SCN: Many companies keep quiet about their OEM efforts, but not Powersoft. Why are you so open about your component production for other manufacturers?

LL: As innovators of technology, we want the tech we create to be used and pushed to the limit by as many people as possible. So, we produce and sell a wide range of amp modules. For example, we have engineered a set of designs that harness the power of our M-Force in different ways (known as EDM Sub, DV Sub, M Sub, and CINESUB). Each design offers unique optimizations that are aimed at speaker builders, sound system owners, and install pros that are looking to extend the low-end capabilities of their systems. This opens up a whole new avenue of innovation for other individuals or companies to develop their own products. In fact, 80% of top loudspeaker brands are currently using Powersoft-manufactured components in their boxes. 

SCN: Why is Powersoft so committed to R&D?

LL: Research and development are the driving force of every product. It is part of our DNA to push the boundaries and involve people doing that. We have been investing between 8-10% of turnover each year in R&D, and around 30% of our workforce is based in that department.

[Why a Bakery Chose Powersoft to Set the Musical Mood]

In the pursuit of innovation, seven years ago we launched "Ideofarm," an internal incubator that allows engineers, designers, and potential new employees to develop new and disruptive ideas. It literally is a farm of ideas with the aim of dedicating a space for the younger generation to focus and revitalize the research and (possible) development of innovative technologies. One benefit of Ideofarm is that it gives Powersoft the ability to think of new products to sell; in fact, Mover came from Ideofarm.

As a team, we have collectively created some of the most forward-thinking audio solutions over the last two decades. We pride ourselves on R&D being at the very core of these achievements. 

SCN: How have supply chain issues impacted Powersoft product development?

LL: During the COVID-19 period, Powersoft continued to develop, plan, and invest in purchasing and production. Without proper planning, we would have found ourselves in an unsustainable situation due to the supply chain problems we are still facing. Thanks also to the ability to react quickly to the unavailability of components on the market, sometimes redesigning the product, it has allowed us to manage this situation and grow significantly this year as well.

Maintaining production in Italy was the other important strategic choice made some years ago, which proved successful especially in this period and allowed us to react quickly thanks to the close relationships with our strategic suppliers. This also gives us great flexibility in planning products on the production line to better respond to our customers' requests.

The PowerZone 504 is a four-channel power amplifier, with each channel set at 125 Watts in a half-width, 1RU format. The PowerZone 1004 features four 250-watt channels in a full-width, 1RU form factor. All models offer Blaze Audio’s Powershare technology, whereby the amplifier’s total available power is automatically shared across all channels.

Realizing all the adaptability of a point source cluster with the extensive control options of a d&b line array, the system comprises the AL60 and AL90 loudspeakers, with ALi60 and ALi90 offering cabinets designed specifically for permanent installation.

Both loudspeakers share a passive 2-way design featuring one 1.4-inch exit HF compression driver with a 3-inch diaphragm mounted to a wave shaping device, and two 10-inch neodymium LF drivers. The combination of sophisticated waveguide design and the symmetrical dipolar arrangement of the LF drivers allows a smooth overlap of the adjacent frequency bands in the crossover design. The wave segments of each cabinet couple without gaps and sum up coherently.

Using the appropriate frame, up to four AL60/AL90 loudspeakers can be flown either in vertical columns or horizontal clusters. Variable splay angles between adjacent cabinets can be set from 20-40 degrees in 5-degree increments, allowing the finest of adjustments and ensuring sound is directed precisely where it’s wanted and nowhere else.

Midrange Directivity Control (MDC) ensures frequencies between 200Hz and 2kHz are evenly distributed, regardless of the splay angle. With its 60-degree horizontal directivity pattern the AL60/ALi60 can be maintained down to approximately 550 Hz, while its output capability can cover a distance of up to 100 feet depending on climatic conditions. The AL90/ALi90—with its 90-degree horizontal pattern control down to 370 Hz—is both sonically and mechanically compatible, ensuring the same optimal acoustic result is achieved consistently anywhere, at any angle—whatever the configuration.

For Anthony Magarelli, director of engineering at USIS AV, the historical landmark came with its challenges: not only were the team ensuring equal acoustic coverage across 17 different rooms within 90,000 square feet of space, USIS AV also had to contend with high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling glass.

“Product placement was a real challenge on this project and we were constantly re-evaluating zone layout and counts,” Magarelli said. “That was the beauty of working with LEA Professional amplifiers; their system is completely scalable so their form factor worked really well in this space and eliminated some of the main challenges.”

The primary benefits are the consolidation of multiple components into a single box, reducing the complexity and the cost of installation and maintenance.

The benefits depend on the processing available in the amplifier. In addition to the baseline DSP functions of EQ on the amplifier channels, more advanced functions increase the benefits.

Matrix mixing, where any input can be routed to one or more outputs, allows common program sources to be routed to multiple zones. Matrix mixing can also be used in paging, either through automated DSP features or external control.

Audio delays on sources can facilitate lip sync where video is being distributed as IPTV and the audio takes a non-IPTV path. An analog or audio-only signal will often lead an IPTV signal by up to hundreds of milliseconds.

Network audio inputs and outputs (Dante, AES67, etc.) allow the sharing of program and paging sources across multiple amplifiers, each installed near where they are needed.

The ability to subscribe to “regular” streaming media such as IPTV audio streams allows the integrator to support more potential sources without requiring an analog input for each source.

The ability to control and monitor the entire audio chain remotely will be the biggest long-term benefit of an integrated DSP/amplifier.

The advantage of integrated DSP grows with the number of amplifier channels. In retail and hospitality settings, the ability to route program material to multiple individual zones, each with their own amplifier(s), becomes much easier with an integrated DSP.

The What: Extron Electronics has introduced the XPA U 758, an eight-channel half-rack amplifier.

The What Else: The XPA Ultra lineup of UL 2043 plenum rated amplifiers include single and side-by-side rack-mount hardware and a newly designed rear panel that makes installing the optional Flexible Conduit Adapter Kit easier. Recessed, detented level controls with laser etched markings provide enhanced visibility and repeatability of settings.

The Bottom Line: Offering eight channels at 75 watts per channel, the new XPA U 758 offers increased power, making it well suited for a wide range of applications. The What: RTI’s CP-16i Cool Power audio amplifier is now available. Offering 16 channels, the unit combines audiophile-grade quality with protection and convenience features to extend the reach of any audio distribution system.

The What Else: Offering rackmount or freestanding installation options and a compact 1RU footprint, the amplifier features power control via voltage triggers or audio signal sensing. The signal sensing feature automatically powers the unit on when an audio signal is detected and puts it in standby mode when no signal is present.

The What: JBL Professional has announced the JBL DSi 2.0 Series cinema amplifiers, offering high power output, DSP, and networking capabilities for the entire range of JBL cinema loudspeakers.

The What Else: The first ever JBL-branded cinema amplifiers, DSi 2.0 Series combines the DSP of Crown’s CDi DriveCore Series amps with a new high-power design to deliver improved efficiency, reliability, and audio fidelity. The DSi 2.0 Series includes three power configurations—350W, 700W, and 1,200W—available in analog and analog-plus-digital versions with Dante/AES67 and SNMP connectivity.

DSi 2.0 Series amplifiers provide four channels of clean, efficient, amplification with bridgeable outputs in a compact 2RU footprint, and are efficiently PowerMatched for JBL Cinema loudspeakers to deliver greater power density in the same rack space. DSi 2.0 Series amps can power up to four JBL surround speakers with a single channel in high-power-density 2-ohm mode, which both speeds deployment and makes DSi 2.0 a cost-efficient solution since less amps are required to power a cinema audio system. 

With 96kHz/32-bit floating-point DSP, DSi 2.0 Series amplifiers offer an array of versatile signal processors, including parametric EQ, FIR processing, LevelMAX limiting, and more. Crown’s proprietary DriveCore technology eliminates hundreds of components within each DSi Series amplifier, reducing the variability of component values to deliver greater efficiency, reliability, and performance. Built-in presets for JBL cinema speaker tunings manage voltage levels, crossover settings, and more, maximizing system efficiency and optimizing audio fidelity. 

Analog-plus-digital DSi 2.0 Series amplifiers offer AES67 connectivity, which enables networked audio distribution from any AES67 or Dante-compatible device and direct interfacing with Dolby ATMOS Connect without the need for additional processing hardware, further simplifying system configuration.

Dual network audio ports allow for primary and secondary networks configured as switched (daisy chain) or redundant (star) topologies. Analog-plus-digital DSi 2.0 Series amps also feature SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) connectivity for interfacing with third-party theater-management systems and Cinema Control (NOC) systems for remote status and fault monitoring. A HiQnet port provides access to Harman Audio Architect software, for controlling, configuring and monitoring amplifier operation through a standard TCP/IQ network.

The Bottom Line: The DSi 2.0 Series consists of six amplifier models, ideal for cinemas, theaters, and premium large-format rooms. The LA4 and LA4-D deliver 1,200 watts at 8 ohms, the MA4 and MA4-D deliver 700 watts at 8 ohms, and the SA4 and SA4-D deliver 350 watts at 8 ohms.

The What: QSC has begun global shipments of the CX-Q Series network power amplifiers in four-channel models. 

The What Else: The CX-Q Series network amplifiers utilize a Class-D hybrid powertrain design built upon the PL380 PowerLight amplifier platform, which has been installed in mission-critical installations around the world. They also feature two QSC amplifier innovations, FlexAmp and FAST (Flexible Summing Amplifier Technology), that combine to offer far more fluid power distribution options in a single amplifier.

In addition, all models are capable of Low Z, 70V, and 100V direct drive.

The What: Legrand has introduced a new family of Nuvo 8-inch in-ceiling and in-wall passive subwoofers and matching digital amplifiers.

The What Else: Optimized for small, medium, and large home theaters and audio installations, the three compact single and dual subwoofers deliver a powerful, low-frequency impact, while the wall- and rack-mount amplifiers are packed with convenience features for maximum versatility.

For smaller installations, the NV-SUBIC8 in-ceiling subwoofer features a round magnetic grill — with an optional square grill available — and an infinite baffle design for maximum placement flexibility. The NV-SUBIW8 and NV-SUBIWDUAL8 in-wall single and dual subwoofers are designed for medium and large projects, respectively. Both units feature a sealed cabinet constructed of durable MDF for a distortion-free bass experience. The NV-SUBIW8 offers a square magnetic grill, while the NV-SUBIWDUAL8's grill is rectangular. All three subwoofers are backed by a lifetime warranty.

Up to two NV-SUBIC8, NV-SUBIW8, and NV-SUBIWDUAL8 subwoofers can be deployed with their matching amplifiers: the 100W NV-SUBAMP100-xx, 200W NV-SUBAMP200-xx, and 500W NV-SUBAMP500-xx, respectively. All three units feature signal-sensing power activation, unfiltered LFE/RCA stereo inputs for connecting to most modern receivers, and variable crossover and phase control to match subwoofer output with the main speakers for premium performance and sound. The What: MSE Audio unveils the SoundTube Entertainment STNet Switch II, a proprietary Power over Ethernet, rack-mountable switch designed for use in Dante networks.

The What Else: SoundTube Entertainment’s STNet Switch II is a 1-RU, 16-port Gigabit switch. The STNet Switch II’s 700-watt power supply guaranties a proprietary 40-watt PoE to each SoundTube IPD speaker on the Switch. The Switch II, while optimized for Dante, also features advanced management flexibility. In addition to the standard 16 Gigabit ports, the STNet Switch II also includes a user adjustable built-in DHCP server, and two SFP ports for fiber or additional Ethernet connections.

The What: Bose Professional is now shipping the two newest models in its line of PowerShare adaptable power amplifiers: the PS604D (600 watts divisible into four channels) and PS404D (400 watts divisible into four channels) featuring Dante networking capability. 

The What Else: With the initial introduction of PowerShare adaptable power amplifiers in 2016, Bose Professional armed installers with a powerful new advantage: the freedom to put amplifier power where it’s needed and waste less of an amplifier’s drive potential where it’s not. “The notion of a multi-channel amplifier that breaks free from the fixed-power-per-channel architecture has been well received,” said Bose amplifier product line manager Ashraf Elghamrawi. “Integrators told us that ‘power-sharing’ makes their projects more responsive, and they asked for digital input options for even more flexibility.”

The Bottom Line: Both new amplifiers support four audio input channels from a Dante network, have the ability to mix onboard analog inputs with digital Dante inputs, and give installers the freedom to place the amplifier away from the source location.

The What: QSC has introduced the CX-Q Series of four- and eight-channel amplifiers that offer drag-and-drop integration with Q-SYS. 

The What Else: CX-Q Series amplifiers are capable of delivering customized power output loading and a total maximum power of up to 8,000W. Low impedance, 70V or 100V direct drive are available on all channels. They feature fifth-generation high-efficiency, Class-D hybrid powertrain design built upon the PL380 PowerLight amplifier platform, offering both high voltage and high current operation with excellent audio quality and thermal performance. Built-in energy saving modes help ensure that CX-Q Series amplifiers draw the minimum amount of AC power while still providing high performance.

The What: Bose Professional has introduced PowerSpace amplifiers, a new line of five cost-effective power amplifiers offering the right power levels and DSP options for commercial applications.

The What Else: PowerSpace amplifiers integrate with the expanding line of Bose Professional loudspeakers, processors, and control devices. The line includes three models with Bose AmpLink connectivity and two models featuring an integrated DSP.

Ideal for zone-expansion applications, the P21000A, P2600A, and P4300A models (2 x 1000, 2 x 604, and 2 x 300 watts, respectively) work for any commercial installation with clean, reliable power and digital connectivity. A Bose AmpLink input allows for multiple channels of uncompressed, low-latency digital audio from Bose digital sound processors via a single Cat 5 cable. Versatile outputs give you the flexibility to deliver full channel power to either low- or high-impedance loads — without bridging — and even send double power to a single zone.

Additionally, the P4300+ and P4150+ models (4 x 300 and 4 x 150 watts) combine power and built-in DSP into a space-saving 1RU design for quick-turn installations. An onboard configuration utility and intuitive browser-based user interface present common tasks in a logical manner, allowing for faster system configuration, thereby reducing installation time while increasing setup accuracy. The Bottom Line: New Bose PowerSpace versatile power amplifiers are part of the significantly expanded Bose Business Music Systems portfolio that includes redesigned loudspeakers, amplifiers, DSP processors, controllers, and software products that raise the bar in meeting the expectations of system integrators, consultants, and their customers in terms of aesthetics, function, quality, and budget.

The What: Atlona has unveiled the AT-UHD-CAT-2, the latest addition to the company’s lineup of HDMI to HDBaseT distribution amplifiers.

The What Else: Bringing all of the integration-friendly features of its larger UHD-CAT Series siblings to smaller AV distribution applications, the new 1x2 UHD-CAT-2 is available immediately and will make its exhibition debut in stand 5-U120 at the upcoming Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) 2019 show (February 5-8 in Amsterdam).

The UHD-CAT-2 features one HDMI input, one HDMI pass-through output, and two HDBaseT outputs for distributing 1080p content up to 230 feet (70 meters) or 4K/UHD material up to 130 feet (40m) over category cable. Each HDBaseT output delivers video, audio, remote PoE receiver power, and control signals – including RS-232 and IR, plus CEC for automatic display control – over a single cable, simplifying installation while minimizing cable runs between AV sources, control systems, and displays. 

The new distribution amplifier supports 4K/UHD video at 60 Hz with 4:2:0 chroma sampling and is HDCP 2.2 compliant, enabling reliable distribution of copy-protected content. The UHD-CAT-2 is compatible with Atlona receiver options including the AT-UHD-EX-70C-RX, the AT-HDVS-200-RX HD receiver and scaler, and the recently released AT-HDVS-SC-RX 4K/UHD receiver with advanced CrystalScale scaling technology.

The Bottom Line: The UHD-CAT-2 offers TCP/IP, RS-232 and IR control capabilities for flexible integration, and can be remotely configured, managed, and monitored over a LAN, WAN. or VPN with the Atlona Management System (AMS 2.0) software or Atlona’s IP-based  Velocity AV control platform.

When Ocean Prime restaurant in Phoenix, AZ upgraded its sound system this past summer, it chose solutions powered by Ashly Audio.

Ocean Prime upgraded the audio quality for its diners by adding two Ashly PEMA 8250.70 eight-channel network amplifiers with built-in Protea Matrix Digital Processors, along with 12 Ashly neWR-5 network wall-mounted controllers to the restaurant’s sound system.

“Once we had the system upgraded the general manager came in and was absolutely blown away by how much better it sounded,” said Lee Collett,president of Bicco Systems, which provided integration of the system for the Ocean Prime project. “That’s the reaction you want when you’re upgrading someone’s sound. You want them to be that excited. And sometimes it’s as easy as putting in the right equipment.”

The upgrade to the Ashly PEMA-based amplification and digital processing brings improved fidelity and reliability to the system, which previously had struggled to impress with its live pianist and house music. Further, the upgrade to Ashly allowed for a fully networked system, meaning the main dining room, bar, patio, lobby, and three private dining areas are now all receiving their own specific attention to detail.

The private dining areas, for example, come equipped with televisions for meetings and can have their own audio even as a live performance is taking place in the main bar area. Once the meeting concludes, the private room can simply switch to the audio from the performance if they wish.

This choice of audio is powered both by the seamless network integration and the Ashly neWR-5 Decora programmable controller, which give staff complete control over the different zones in a way that is both intuitive and comprehensive.

“With the upgrade to Ashly we now have a system that fits our space,” said Tony McMahon, general manager of Ocean Prime. “Not just in terms of size and scale, but for use. When you’re providing a fine dining experience with an impressive menu and genuine hospitality, you want to make sure every detail is perfect. The sound is now in line with the high quality we and our guests expect.”

Elon University has just opened the Schar Center, which serves as the home for Elon Phoenix basketball and volleyball and a center for major campus events. In addition to the main arena, the Schar Center boasts a spacious entry atrium, a large practice gymnasium, locker room and team facilities, and a hospitality room for social events and gatherings. Audio & Light, Inc., designed and installed the AV systems for the facility, including a state-of-the-art sound system in the 160,000 square-foot, 5,100-seat arena that relies on Linea Research power amplifiers.

“This is the first time we have spec’d or used Linea Research amplifiers, and so far, they have been very impressive,” said Brian Cox, Audio & Light installation division vice president, who designed the Schar Center AV systems. “We’ve been impressed with Linea Research amps’ DSP capability and ability to do all of our speaker processing in the amplifier per channel—and the power output is incredible.”

The arena has no acoustic treatment, relying on the design and quality of the sound system. To ensure that quality, Cox designed a Dante system featuring Fulcrum Acoustic loudspeakers driven by Linea Research 88C10 and 44C20 power amplifiers and networked with Symetrix Edge DSPs. “The main sound system over the court, covering the seating area, consists of 24 Fulcrum Acoustic AH96-FP ‘full passive’ loudspeakers, configured as 8 arrays of 3 loudspeakers each,” said Cox. “Each of those arrays also includes a Fulcrum Acoustic CS121 subwoofer, for a total of eight CS121s. On the north side, the seats go up much higher so we installed five Fulcrum DX1295-FP fill speakers. On the east and west ends of the arena, on the concourse, are seating that’s shaded from the main system, so each end is filled with six Fulcrum Acoustic GX1295s. That requires a total of 40 amplifier channels for the mains and fills and 8 channels for the subwoofers.”

Five 8-channel Linea Research 88C10 power amplifiers drive the 40 channels of mains and fills, while a pair of 4-channel Linea Research 44C20 amps drive the 8 subwoofers. A sixth Linea Research 88C10 is kept in the rack, unpowered, as an emergency spare. “Using the full passive loudspeakers was made possible by the Linea Research amplifiers,” Cox said. “Fulcrum Acoustic speakers work extremely well with Linea amplifiers. The Linea Research amps’ built-in DSP gave us the ability to process the limiting by frequency, rather than just limiting by level. They can close down on high-frequency damage before it happens, without having to worry about the low frequencies.”

Linea Research 88C10 and 44C20 power amps fully integrate 96 kHz DSP with algorithms designed in-house at Linea. Users can create custom FIR filter sets on each channel with up to 384 taps at 48kHz resolution, or 768 taps at 96kHz. Linea Research amps boast Level 1 compatibility when used with Fulcrum Acoustic loudspeakers.

“This was one of our first projects using Fulcrum Acoustic Level 1 presets,” said Rik Kirby, president of Allied Professional Technologies, Linea Research’s U.S. distributor. “This compatibility has been proving very popular, and the end result sounds great. And Fulcrum Acoustic have been able to implement Linea’s Virtual Crossover (VX) Limiter, allowing them to limit LF and HF separately despite using a passive crossover in a mid-high device.”

“We wanted this to be a Dante digital system so we could make it as flexible as possible,” said Cox. “The Linea amplifiers come with an option for Dante I/O, and they work very well with the Symetrix Edge DSPs. We have one Edge for arena processing, one for auxiliary area processing in other parts of the Schar Center, and a third Edge for routing and switching. The Linea amplifiers have three network ports: one for control and the primary and secondary Dante ports. The Symetrix DSPs, Linea Research amplifiers, and Fulcrum Acoustic speakers have so far worked together flawlessly.”

When deciding on Linea Research amplifiers, Cox considered multiple factors. “It seemed like the Linea Research amplifier was designed for the Fulcrum Acoustic speakers we wanted to use,” he said. “In fact, the Fulcrum Acoustic rep first brought Linea Research amplifiers to our attention. We looked at other brands but anything else that had Dante didn’t have enough DSP horsepower, and the Linea Research amplifiers’ power-to-size ratio and output capabilities are among the best on the market. To go with another brand, we probably would have ended up with more external DSP power and larger amplifiers with more heat load. And programming the Linea Research DSP was easy; we had the amplifiers updated, loaded, and ready to go and passing audio in one morning.”

Audio input for the arena system is through a Yamaha TF1 16-channel mixer with a NY64-D Dante I/O card. The mixer rolls out in a mobile cart, which includes a headset and computer inputs, providing a complete solution that can be located at the scorer’s table for sporting events. Floor pockets enable the mixer to send Dante audio to the network.

“The Schar Center is great; it’s a beautiful building,” said Cox. “The athletic departments are now using their new offices, and the basketball and volleyball teams have moved in. The arena opened with a women’s volleyball game on August 28, and the sound system did a really good job. The Linea Research amplifiers’ sonic performance so far seems to be above everything else. Everybody here is very happy.”

The What: Martin Audio has released nine new products, including the ADORN series of loudspeakers, the SX110 subwoofer, a range VIA amplifiers, and Ethernet to U-NET bridge U-Hub.

The What Else: ADORN loudspeakers are designed for distributed sound applications that require high performance from visually discreet, ultra-compact enclosures. They provide a sonic transition within a multi-zoned complex using larger Martin Audio systems such as CDD or BlacklineX.Featuring a 4” and 5.5” driver, respectively, the two-way ADORN 40 and ADORN 55 are available in black or white as standard and can be readily painted to match any interior décor and architectural environment.

The new SX110 subwoofer will extend the bandwidth of ADORN on-wall speakers and works for foreground music applications, which require increased impact and low frequency performance. Designed to be able to sit under banquette seating or discreetly placed within a venue, its ultra-compact enclosure features a 10” (250mm) driver and generous bass-reflex porting to reduce air noise. SX110 can also be suspended by means of integral M8 threaded inserts.

VIA is a new range of four high performance, cost effective power amplifiers designed primarily for installation use, but also suited to portable applications. VIA partners with all Martin Audio loudspeakers where networking and onboard DSP are not required, but where full system set-up is necessary, either the existing DX0.5 controller or newly announced DX4.0 can be added. DX4.0 is a 4-in 8-out loudspeaker processor and matrix featuring networked audio via Dante, high quality 96kHz processing, VX limiting as well as FIR optimization support for O-Line with Scalable Resolution.

U-Hub is an Ethernet to U-NET bridge equipped with analog and AES3 digital audio transport. It facilitates PC connection and VU-NET software control of MLA Series arrays and subwoofers via their inbuilt proprietary U-NET network. When used in conjunction with the Martin Audio DX4.0 networked system controller, U-Hub can connect audio and network to an MLA Series system with a single cable via a Dante digital audio network.

The Bottom Line: The products will be on display and demonstrated at the company’s UK Open Days, September 18-20, in High Wycombe.

Paul Hales, 30-year loudspeaker engineer, AV industry veteran, and owner of audio manufacturer Pro Audio Technology (PRO), has launched of Theory Audio Design (Theory). Theory is a manufacturer of loudspeakers and amplified loudspeaker controllers; the company will make its debut at CEDIA 2018 in Sound Room 14.

“PRO continues to thrive and is a leading brand in elite home theater and distributed audio systems around the world,” said Hales. “With Theory, my goal was to bring the thrilling sound for which my products are known to a broader audience, and that is exactly what we’ve done. The What: Key Digital has introduced the KD-AMP220 compact commercial digital audio amplifier.

The What Else: KD-AMP220 input connections accommodate microphone, line level balanced, and line level 3.5mm stereo analog audio inputs. The output is a mix of audio from the microphone input and the selected audio input. Each input has variable volume level set—perfect for presentation spaces as KD-AMP220’s internal pre-amp accepts direct microphone plugin and can provide 48V phantom power. Speaker level output can be set to bridge, stereo, or mono mode. Integrators can sum left and right channels to a single speaker in bridge mode. For stereo applications, KD-AMP220 can be configured to send left and right channels to separate speakers. Mono mode is especially useful in speech and voice enforcement applications.

The Bottom Line: KD-AMP220 gives integrators RS-232 and IR controllability with variable input and output level and muting, bass, and treble adjustments. The IR sensor wire is of appropriate length for installing the amplifier out of sight while the sensor is able to pick up line of sight signals. Front panel controls can adjust levels or select the line input, but can also be disabled by a professional control system.

J Sound Services (JSS) of Nashville recently specified two NEXO/Yamaha systems for Drum Corp International (DCI) members, the Carolina Crown of Fort Mill, SC and the Cadets of Allentown, PA in time for the semi final competitions that began at Middle Tennessee State University in July. Both groups will be participating in the DCI Championships on Sept. 11 in Indianapolis.

“The most significant criteria given to us by the Crown team for their new sound reinforcement system was clarity,” said Jason Spence, owner of JSS and principal systems designer. Jim Coates, the CEO/director of Crown, said, “We’re not trying to have a big rock show (referring to SPL); we want clarity.”

Spence said it was the JSS approach to design a system that could reproduce the detail of all the instruments and the ability to balance those details within the entire ensemble.

“The drastic swing in dynamics between a brass section wide open and the soft mallet of the front ensemble is a tall order for any sound system,” Spence said. “As with any sound reinforcement system, careful consideration was given to coverage, especially at the judging area. And, as with any project, we had a budget to meet. We also needed efficient amplifiers with low power draws and a system that was fast and easy to set up. As we evaluated numerous systems and the criteria, the NEXO M10 easily checked all the boxes.”

For the Crown organization, JSS designed, provided, and built a stereo (left/right) NEXO/Yamaha sound reinforcement system with custom carts for the stadium competition. The NEXO rig consisted of a total of 8 (4 left, 4 right) GEO M10 line array boxes, 6 MSUB15s (3 left, 3 right), 2 NXAmp 4x2 Mk 2 amplifiers (1 left, 1 right), and 2 NXAE104 AES network cards. A Yamaha QL5 Digital Audio Console was chosen for its sound quality, ease of use, and remote connectivity of the Rio 3224-D stage box. MY8AE cards for the NXamps were deployed, in lieu of Dante, to minimize setup time.

“The teams have six minutes to role onto the field and be ready,” Spence said. “So, speed of setup is extremely important, and with AES, we don’t have to wait for the network to come online before we can make noise.”

For the Cadets, JSS consulted on the design and provided a 4-cart, multi-zone NEXO/Yamaha sound reinforcement system. 14 GEO M10s (2 carts with 4 M10s over 1 MSUB15, 2 carts with 3 M10s over 1 per side RS15 Ray Sub, each powered by 1 NXAMP 4X2 MK2 amplifier (a total of 4 NXAMP 4x2 amplifiers powered the system), and 4 NXAE104 AES network cards. The console was upgraded to a QL5 to integrate with their existing Yamaha Tio digital stage boxes.

The What: Extron Electronics has introduced the new DA4 12G HD‑SDI, a compact four‑output distribution amplifier for multi‑rate SDI digital video signals.

The What Else: It supports all common serial digital video data rates up to 11.88 Gbps, while passing HDR, embedded audio, and other ancillary data allowed by the SMPTE and ITU standards. Automatic input cable equalization adds up to 984 feet (300 meters) for SDI, 787 feet (240 meters) for HD‑SDI, 590 feet (180 meters) for 3G-SDI, 295 feet (90 meters) for 6G-SDI, and 230 feet (70 meters) for 12G-SDI digital video, when using RG6 cable. Automatic output reclocking reshapes and restores signal timing at each output for added headroom when connecting multiple devices.

"The DA4 12G HD-SDI supports the latest SMPTE standards and compliments our growing 12G-SDI product line," said Casey Hall, vice president of sales and marketing for Extron. "Customers now have a convenient option for sending 4K capable, multi-rate SDI long distances to multiple locations in broadcast, production, medical imaging, and other demanding applications."

The Bottom Line: The DA4 12G HD-SDI is housed in a quarter rack width, metal enclosure, providing integration-friendly mounting options into both new and existing AV systems.

The What: miniDSP, a designer and manufacturer of digital signal processing platforms and solutions for a wide range of applications, announced the launch of immerGO object-based 3D audio.

The What Else: The server is a standard Mac or PC that runs a DAW (such as Reaper) and controls AVB devices on a plug & play AVB network. The client control is provided via a web interface on the server or a separate mobile device. immerGO enables a user to select sound channels, move these channels in 3D space, and to record these movements for later playback. An immerGo system can be used to localize sound sources in live shows, theater productions, and/or theme parks, amongst other environments. The location of sounds can be controlled as the show progresses, or soundscapes can be recorded and played back during a show.

The immerGo series includes: the miniDSP N-DAC8 8-channel digital to analog convertor; the miniDSP PWR-16 400-Watt ultra-compact, highly efficient audio power amplifier; the miniDSP SPK-4P PoE+ full range loudspeaker; and the miniDSP SPK-4 pocket-size full range loudspeaker (fitted with a 3.5-inch full range driver).

The Bottom Line: The product was received as an ideal solution for live events, theme parks, large and small AV installations, museums, art galleries, soundscapes, and many more immersive audio applications.

The What: Vanco International has introduced four new products from the Beale Street Audio, PulseAudio, and Vanco brands. The new products offer residential and commercial AV distributors and dealers with the latest in HDMI wireless extender and receiver technology, as well as compact subwoofer amplifiers and Bluetooth transmitter/receivers.

The What Else: Small and compact, the Beale Street Audio A220 amplifier fits almost anywhere and can drive even the most demanding subwoofers. The A220 is Class D, 220 watts, and features a stereo/mono line level audio input that can receive full-band audio from any audio amplifier, receiver or preamp, or an LFE input from an appropriately featured device. With an efficient digital design that runs cool under almost any load, the A220 also features a stereo speaker level input and pass-through, adjustable subwoofer crossover frequency, and adjustable phase settings. The A220 is a simple and efficient way for installers to add amplified in-wall or in-ceiling subwoofers to multiroom audio amplifiers that do not have zone-specific level outputs.

Designed for audio components that do not already feature Bluetooth functionality, the Pulse Audio PABT410 Bluetooth 4.1 Transmitter and Receiver can be used to send or accept Bluetooth signals with A2DP, AVRCP, and apt-X compatibility. The PABT410 includes both analog and digital connections with 3.5mm and SPDIF connections for inputs and outputs and automatically searches available devices for connectivity. The PABT140’s integrated fast-charging battery is well suited for mobile use as it does not need to be connected to a power supply. The device supports voice prompts and Dual-Stream (TX) and Dual Connection (RX) modes to maintain multiple connections simultaneously. With the PABT410, installers can now bring Bluetooth functionality to any audio product.

The Vanco HDWIRKIT/RX kit extends HDMI signals wirelessly up to 131 feet/40 meters and includes both a transmitter and receiver for point-to-point application. Able to transmit up to 1080p HD video and audio, the HDWIRKIT/RX can split wireless HDMI signals to up to four displays and multiple kits can be installed in one application without interference. The HDWIRKIT/RX does not require line-of-sight transmission and can send and receive signal through most obstacles, making it a convenient solution for installations where running cable is an issue.
